Context Trivia / JurassicParkIII

* AccidentallyCorrectWriting: The ''Spinosaurus'' swimming in the river scenes (and also at the sea, if you accept the implications[[note]]Listen carefully when the boat disappears on the mist, you can hear the same growl heard just before the river attack[[/note]] that it was him the one who attacked the boat at the beginning). At the time the movie was made, the only ''Spinosaurus'' remains that had been discovered were the spines of the sail on its back (the fossil was destroyed in UsefulNotes/WorldWarII); the notion of ''Spinosaurus'' as a truly aquatic animal had not been proposed yet, and the scene was actually based on one from the original ''Jurassic Park'' novel by Michael Crichton that involved the ''T. rex''. In 2014, a much more complete ''Spinosaurus'' fossil was discovered: while it looks very different than the film's version (think something halfway between a theropod dinosaur and a crocodile), the dinosaur is now theorized to have been an amphibious brown-water predator. Also it really was bigger than ''T. rex'': if anything, the ''Spinosaurus'' in the film was ''too small''.
* AwesomeDearBoy: When an interviewer asked Creator/WilliamHMacy why he accepted a role in ''Jurassic Park III'', he replied "Because I'm 50 years old and I get to fight a dinosaur."
* BackedByThePentagon: The Marines who rescue the group at the end of the film are portrayed by real marines.
* BTeamSequel: The first two ''Jurassic Park'' films were based on Creator/MichaelCrichton novels, adapted for the screen by Crichton and David Koepp, directed by Steven Spielberg, and scored by Music/JohnWilliams. None are true of this movie, although Spielberg did stay on as executive producer. (Spielberg also selected Joe Johnston to direct ''III'' after having previously rejected his offer to direct ''[[Film/TheLostWorldJurassicPark Lost World]]'', having wanted to make the first sequel himself.)
* CommonKnowledge: It's often stated that the ''T. rex'' in this movie is a sub-adult, but this is never stated in any official material. It is shown to be smaller than Rexy from the first movie, at 37 feet long, on the movie's [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/monstermovies/images/1/1e/Spinosaurus_T_rex_size_comparison_JP3.png/revision/latest?cb=20190918214045 old official site]], but it is still considered to be fully grown.
* CreatorBacklash:
** Alessandro Nivola had no love for ''Jurassic Park III'' and its production. [[https://www.ign.com/articles/2002/10/16/jurassic-park-iv-i-hope-not-says-nivola In an interview with IGN in 2002]], Nivola admitted that making the film was a very trying experience and that he didn't like his role as there was nothing to latch onto "character-wise" and had a horrible time on set which he said was "maddening", and credited Sam Neill for helping him get through the experience by playing Music/BeachBoys songs on Neill's ukulele while sitting in their trailers. When asked if he would return as Billy for the upcoming sequel, Nivola's response was "You know, I tell you what. I really hope not. I really hope not." In 2022, [[https://screenrant.com/jurassic-park-3-sam-neill-criticism-response-future/ Neill]] would say that he had a lovely time with Nivola, though he sensed Leoni and Macy didn’t have as much fun making it.
** Joe Johnston revealed that he thought about leaving the film on a few occasions because of the uncertainty of how it would turn out on account of not having a finished script. He stated that making the film was hell on a daily basis and that shooting without a finished script was nerve-wracking but it also freed the creative process. He praised the actors for being flexible and dealing with the lack of a finished script the best they could.
* CreatorsFavorite: This is Sam Neill’s favorite of the series, as he enjoyed making the movie, his time with his co-stars and director, and thinks the action and character development was fun. In 2022 he would suggest that [[https://screenrant.com/jurassic-park-3-sam-neill-criticism-response-future/ fans reevaluate the film]] since he still regards it warmly.
* DeletedScene:
** Originally, the sequence between the ''Spinosaurus'' and ''Tyrannosaurus Rex'' involved a short moment where the two beasts sized each other up, while roaring and growling. The conflict would be started by the ''Spinosaurus'', who smacks the ''T. Rex'' across the face, rather than the ''T. Rex'' making the first strike. This sequence can still be seen in trailers, and also in the special features of ''Jurassic Park III''. Additionally, ''The Making of Jurassic Park III'' shows an extended sequence of fighting where the ''T. Rex'' begins to push the ''Spinosaurus'' back.
** Udesky, in a cut scene, attempts to use a stick to hit the ''Velociraptors'' to defend himself, with the raptors overpowering and injuring him. This sequence can be seen in production stills for the film.
* RefittedForSequel: Many scenes in the film are from the books: The river chase and aviary from the first and the cloning lab from ''The Lost World''. It's been joked that ''III'' exists mainly to use up all the bits from the books they couldn't fit into the first two movies.
* ScienceMarchesOn:
** The incorrectness of the Jurassic Park dinosaurs is {{Handwaved}} and [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] by Grant in that these dinosaurs are mutants, not real dinosaurs; thanks to having their DNA spliced by frog DNA. One of the changes includes putting some feathers on the head of the raptors.
** Around the time this film was made, it was not yet known that pterosaurs didn't rear their young like birds.
** In 2014, a more complete skeleton of ''Spinosaurus'' [[http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-29143096 was found]], which showed that while still a big carnivore, in fact the movie incarnation might be shorter lengthwise and lighter in weight than the actual creature, the ''Spinosaurus'' had an even more bizarre shape and was suggested to have been quadrupedal[[note]]or at least semi-quadrupedal, since the forelimbs seem to lack the adaptations for a fully quadrupedal movement, and some have suggested that even with the super-short hind limbs, ''Spinosaurus'' would have still been capable of [[http://theropoda.blogspot.it/2014/09/spinosaurus-revolution-episodio-iv-una.html bipedal]] [[http://hyrotrioskjan.deviantart.com/gallery/#/art/Mr-Weird-483489664?_sid=528e68f5 movement]]. More data is needed to clarify this situation.[[/note]] and adapted for an aquatic lifestyle, as its hind legs were unconventionally short and possessed webbed feet, much like a duck or a pelican. This new reconstruction has not gone [[http://qilong.wordpress.com/2014/09/12/the-outlaw-spino-saurus/ without]] [[http://www.skeletaldrawing.com/home/theres-something-fishy-about-spinosaurus9112014 criticism]], although the researchers have also [[http://markwitton-com.blogspot.de/2014/09/the-spinosaurus-hindlimb-controversy.html?spref=tw responded]] to the detractors. And then a 2020 discovery showed that ''Spinosaurus'' had a ''paddle-shaped tail'', confirming that it was indeed aquatic.
* SoMyKidsCanWatch: No less a man that Creator/WilliamHMacy admitted that he did the film so his daughter could see him on screen, admitting that a lot of his filmography (such as ''Film/{{Fargo}}'') wasn't really for people her age. Although there's things like a rotting skeleton and a velociraptor giving a man a NeckSnap on screen, so...

* WritingByTheSeatOfYourPants: Shooting for the film began before the final script was completed.
