* AccidentallyCorrectWriting: There actually is a Greek deity named Kratos, the personification of strength. The original creators were not aware of him until after they had settled on naming their character Kratos after the Greek word for strength, kratos.
* MeaningfulReleaseDate: All but three[[note]]''VideoGame/GodOfWarGhostOfSparta'' and ''VideoGame/GodOfWarRagnarok'', released in November, and ''VideoGame/GodOfWarPS4'', released in April[[/note]] of the games have been released in March, the month named for the Roman God of War, Mars. In addition, ''VideoGame/GodOfWarIII'' was released March 16. This may be a reference to John 3:16 in the Bible, as the series has some possible Christian overtones, ''III'' most of all.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Just take a look at the character sheet. Practically every character to appear in more than one game has had this happen at some point or another. Part of it can be attributed to the fact that all of the gods were completely redesigned between the first and second game, other times it's just good old-fashioned recasting.
** Among many other format changes, it finally happened to Kratos himself when the series moved from the Greek Era to the Norse Era. Motion capture had become ubiquitous in video games by this point, and Creator/TerrenceCCarson, who voiced Kratos throughout the Greek Era, would not have been up to the task of portraying Kratos physically as well as vocally, so he was replaced with Creator/ChristopherJudge. Many dubs of the series followed suit and recast Norse-era Kratos as well.
* ReferencedBy:
** ''VideoGame/ANNOMutationem'': The 'Omnipotence' achievement artwork displays the helmet of Ares.
** ''VideoGame/AssassinsCreedOdyssey'': The armor set "Spartan Renegade" has chains wrapped around the forearms, very similar to Kratos.
** ''VideoGame/TheElderScrollsVSkyrim'': One of the loading screens has an orc covered in blood, wielding two war axes, who looks a lot like Kratos. The provided gameplay tip is about the orcs' berserker power.
** ''VideoGame/MortalKombat9'': Kratos appears as one of the guest fighters.
** ''VideoGame/ThemsFightinHerds'': The "Warrior God" PaletteSwap for Stronghoof has him with Atreus' design colors.
* SelfDeprecation: Meta-example. Series creator David Jaffe has [[https://www.vg247.com/2013/05/27/god-of-wars-spectacle-distracts-from-shallow-mechanics-says-jaffe/ stated that]] he finds the games' combat to be shallow compared to other games in the genre, and that he would have made the series a little differently if it were a new IP today. Possibly downplayed, since he never expressed explicit dissatisfaction with the mechanics, and even went on record to bluntly say he is not decrying the games themselves.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** There was going to be a movie adaptation directed by Bret Ratner.
