* AccidentallyCorrectWriting: There actually is a Greek deity named Kratos, the personification of strength. The original creators were not aware of him until after they had settled on naming their character Kratos after the Greek word for strength, kratos.

* TheOtherDarrin: Just take a look at the character sheet. Practically every character to appear in more than one game has had this happen at some point or another. Part of it can be attributed to the fact that all of the gods were completely redesigned between the first and second game, other times it's just good old-fashioned recasting.

** Among many other format changes, it finally happened to Kratos himself when the series moved from the Greek Era to the Norse Era. Motion capture had become ubiquitous in video games by this point, and Creator/TerrenceCCarson, who voiced Kratos throughout the Greek Era, would not have been up to the task of portraying Kratos physically as well as vocally, so he was replaced with Creator/ChristopherJudge. Many dubs of the series followed suit and recast Norse-era Kratos as well.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Kratos originally looked [[http://www.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/kratos_concept.jpg much different]].
** The original game contained three bonus videos hinting where the series could go next. These concepts would be recycled for ''VideoGame/GodOfWarGhostOfSparta'', ''VideoGame/GodOfWar2'', and ''VideoGame/GodOfWar3'' though heavily altered:
*** ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=4&v=kNH7nmeHmvI The Fate of the Titan]]'' shows Kronos' corpse being discovered in the desert by modern archaeologists who would explore the temple's contents, suggesting a new hero would arise. Interestingly, Cronos has a hole in his forehead, roughly where Kratos canonically stabbed him with the Blade of Olympus.
*** ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psKDIKW1XuY Birth of the Beast]]'' revealed the existence of Kratos' brother Deimos, who ended up in the Underworld and became a demon seeking revenge against Kratos for abandoning him, when the two were separated because Deimos was deemed weak as a child.
*** ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tElSeFbncKY A Secret Revealed]]'' shows Kratos, now God of War, tracking down his mother to learn his father's identity. In her attempt to tell Kratos, a curse turned her into a monster that Kratos has to slay, but in her final breath, revealed that Kratos was the son of Zeus, leaving Kratos with a desire for revenge.
** The Cyclops was originally going to have a visible Penis, because the game director wanted them to have a feel similar to zoo animals.
** Kratos' final design was almost going to have purple tattoos instead of red.

* SelfDeprecation: Meta-example. Series creator David Jaffe has [[https://www.vg247.com/2013/05/27/god-of-wars-spectacle-distracts-from-shallow-mechanics-says-jaffe/ stated that]] he finds the games' combat to be shallow compared to other games in the genre, and that he would have made the series a little differently if it were a new IP today. Possibly downplayed, since he never expressed explicit dissatisfaction with the mechanics, and even went on record to bluntly say he is not decrying the games themselves.
