!!In the series as a whole:
* CashCowFranchise: While they certainly have many other [=IPs=] that are popular and profitable, this is the video game franchise that turned Square into a powerhouse publisher and made them kings of the JRPG genre alongside Enix, at least until the two companies merged and became Square-Enix.
* CreatorsFavorite: Creator/YoshitakaAmano has stated that of all characters he has drawn for the series, Terra Branford from VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI is his favorite.
* DuelingGames: Before Square and Enix merged, Final Fantasy and VideoGame/DragonQuest were very much rivals of one another. Even today (mainly in Japan), there is still some rivalry over which series is better.
** And within the BrokenBase of Franchise/FinalFantasy fandom, while many different games' fans are at each other's throats, likely the best-known rivalry is between fans of VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII and its direct predecessor VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI, with many of the latter resenting the former's popularity, which is believed to be undeserved as compared to their own game, and the former thinking (if they care at all) that the title of best FF game is theirs and the old-school fans need to get over themselves already. This usually manifests itself as fighting over which game had the coolest villain.
** VideoGame/PanzerDragoon Saga was made to go up against VII and be the KillerApp RPG for the UsefulNotes/SegaSaturn. Unfortunately, Saga was released late into the Saturn's life, so it never stood a chance.
* IAmNotShazam: An unusual case of the series doing this to itself, at least a term in it. It's commonly accepted that the various Final Fantasy worlds form a multiverse connected by the Void, the space between the dimensions. However, when Final Fantasy V introduced the Void as a concept, it was treated like a source of power wielded by the warlock Enuo and later Exdeath, and the Void itself was sealed in the Interdimensional Rift between the two worlds. Ergo, it's the Interdimensional Rift that is actually the VoidBetweenTheWorlds, and the Void is closer to TheNothingAfterDeath. Most games since that reference the concept of the Rift tend to refer to it interchangeably as either the Rift or the Void, but it is more commonly called the Void now. Granted, this isn't helped by V itself not always distinguishing clearly between the Rift and the Void, so there was already a degree of confusion.
* KillerApp: Like with Franchise/DragonQuest and VideoGame/MonsterHunter, a Final Fantasy game will usually sell lots of consoles if it shows up as an exclusive, namely VideoGame/FinalFantasyI for the Platform/NintendoEntertainmentSystem, VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI for the Platform/SuperNintendoEntertainmentSystem, VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII for the Platform/PlayStation, VideoGame/FinalFantasyX for the Platform/PlayStation2, the remakes of VideoGame/FinalFantasyIII and IV for the Platform/NintendoDS, VideoGame/CrisisCoreFinalFantasyVII for the Platform/PlayStationPortable, VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIIRemake for the Platform/PlayStation4, and VideoGame/FinalFantasyXVI for the Platform/PlayStation5.
* MagnumOpusDissonance: Hironobu Sakaguchi considers IX the best title in the series. The game received mixed reactions and sold the least copies of all the Platform/PlayStation installments of the franchise. However, it has since became vindicated by fans and is the highest-rated [=PS1=] entry of the franchise on Metacritic, so perhaps time showed Sakaguchi to be right.
* MeaningfulName: A lot of the names in the FF world draw upon mythology, religious beliefs, and fiction. A good example is all of the summons, who are named after mythical figures, places, or objects such as Leviathan, Kujata, Shiva, Hades, and Ark to name a few.
** Some of the weapons are named after legendary ones such as Excalibur, Masamune, Gigas, and so forth.
** Certain spell names are obviously what they do also.
* ReferencedBy: A potted cactus shaped like a Cactuar can be spotted in the background in several episodes of Animation/PleasantGoatAndBigBigWolf: Joys of Seasons.
* ThrowItIn: A fan wrote Sakaguchi a letter asking if the title Final Fantasy was an English translation of Grand Illusion Kyukyoku Gensou, Final Fantasy written in kanji. Sakaguchi denied this but said that he hopes to use it one day and is indeed used in VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: was originally proposed to be a Final Fantasy, but it was deemed too dark to be one. It instead went on to be its own thing, spawning a meta series of its own with and VideoGame/XenobladeChronicles.
