* ActingForTwo:
** In the original version:
*** Creator/AiNonaka provides voice to Berserker of Black and the young [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Medea]] who appears in Atalanta's flashback at the beginning of the 18th episode (a character whom Nonaka voiced in Videogame/FateGrandOrder).
*** Satoshi Tsuruoka voices Berserker of Red and [[spoiler: returns to voice [[Literature/FateZero Gilles de Rais]] again in the 23rd episode, when Caster of Red summons him to torment Ruler.]]
** In the English dub:
*** Creator/EricaMendez voices Assassin of Black and Roche.
*** Creator/AllegraClark voices Archer of Red, Assassin of Red and Reika. [[spoiler:Which becomes darkly humorous when Archer of Red kills Reika]].
* ActorAllusion:
** This is not the [[VideoGame/JeanneDArc first time]] Creator/MaayaSakamoto played Jeanne d'Arc, even outside the Nasuverse.
** This is not the first time Creator/MakotoFurukawa (the voice of [[StoryBreakerPower Achilles]]) played a [[WebComic/OnePunchMan nigh-invincible Blood Knight who just wants a good fight]].
*** In regards to ''WebComic/OnePunchMan'', Creator/SaoriHayami also played a green-haired ActionGirl with relation to Furukawa's character (though this time it's reversed: in OPM it was Fubuki who tried to get acquainted with Saitama, whereas ''Apocrypha'' has Achilles trying to woo Atalanta instead).
** In this series, Creator/KoukiUchiyama plays Shirou Kotomine, who could be argued as someone seeking to end conflict and misery through his own overwhelming force. While Shirou is the villain in this story, he also played another character with exactly the same motivation prior. However, that character, Banagher Links of ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamUnicorn'', is the protagonist and undoubtedly TheParagon.
* ColbertBump: The Astolfo page in Website/TheOtherWiki has had several times increased attendance after many people decided to check whether he really looked like a sweet girl.
* CrossdressingVoices: Creator/RumiOokubo and Creator/FayeMata voice Rider of Black/Astolfo in Japanese and English respectively, [[DudeLooksLikeALady though one would be forgiven to think otherwise]]. Averted in the Mexican Spanish dub, where he's voiced by an actual male (Carlos Siller).
* DuelingShows: The Netflix world premiere (Fall 2017) coincides with the airing of the ''VisualNovel/DiesIrae'' adaptation.
* MarthDebutedInSmashBros:
** The Apocrypha design for Jeanne d'Arc shows up in the anime adaptation of ''Literature/FateZero''.
** Before the anime adaptation of ''Apocrypha'' brought more people into the series, several of the Servants (Jeanne, Mordred, Jack the Ripper, Siegfried, Frankenstein's Monster, etc) received more attention after they appeared in ''VideoGame/FateGrandOrder'', the CashCowFranchise of the ''Fate'' series.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Mordred was originally voiced by Creator/HoukoKuwashima and Creator/JulieAnnTaylor in the DEEN Fate/ Stay Night anime; here she is voiced by Creator/MiyukiSawashiro and Creator/EricaLindbeck in the respective Japanese and English dubs. Partially justified as she's been revamped so much from the ground up, she is effectively a completely new character the point she bears almost no similarities to the previous version beyond the most superficial details (helmet having horns and being a clone of Artoria). A similar case happens to her fellow Knight of the Round Table and DEEN anime cameo, [[Characters/FateGrandOrderSabersAToF Bedivere]].
** For her cameos in episodes 6 and 23, in the dub, Artoria is played not by Creator/KariWahlgren (who played her in everything from ''Zero'' onward) but by Creator/MichelleRuff (who played her in the 2010 ''Unlimited Blade Works'' movie). This is mainly because the English dub for Fate/Apocrypha wasn't union contracted as opposed to the other Fate English dubs such as VisualNovel/FateStayNight and VideoGame/FateGrandOrder where both were union contracted.
** Medea's cameo in episode 18 has her voiced by Creator/LauraPost in English, instead of Creator/MeganHollingshead who voiced her in ''Unlimited Blade Works'' (and reprised later in the ''Heaven's Feel'' movies). Possibly excused by Medea being a teenager in her appearance here, as opposed to being an adult in her other appearances.
** The Latin American Spanish dub has a meta-cast shift, as unlike the [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight original series]], which was dubbed in Venezuela, and ''Literature/FateZero'', [[NoDubForYou which wasn't dubbed in Spanish]], this one was dubbed in Mexico instead.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Creator/FayeMata as Astolfo. While Astolfo does fit into [[GenkiGirl the personality of the characters]] Faye normally voices, Astolfo is one of the first male characters she has voiced. Not only that, Faye made Astolfo sound much more masculine (albeit effeminate) to avoid ViewerGenderConfusion.
** In addition, Creator/LaurenLanda as Celenike. Up to this point, she usually played good hearted female characters, be it young or mature. This would be one of the few times she played an utterly depraved, sadistic and selfish character.
* PromotedFanboy:
** The novel's author Yuichiro Higashide has stated in an interview that ''VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}}'' was one of his inspirations to start writing in the first place.
** In the interview with him about participating in the anime on its official site, Creator/MakotoFurukawa mentions that he's been a fan of the Fate series since he was in college.
* RoleReprise:
** In a rather weird way, Artoria is voiced by Creator/MichelleRuff, who [[TheOtherDarrin both replaced]] her previous voice actress Creator/KariWahlgren, and is reprising her role from the ''Unlimited Blade Works" movie.
** Lucien Dodge and Dan Woren return to their ''Literature/FateZero'' roles of Waver Velvet/Lord El-Melloi II and Giles de Rais.
* SelfAdaptation: The author of the light novel, Yuichiro Higashide also wrote the script for the anime adaptation.
* SerendipityWritesThePlot: Heavy spoilers: Shirou Kotomine was created for various reasons [[spoiler: such as being a foil to Jeanne d'Arc. The fact that he shared the same name as Shirou Emiya was a very happy accident]].
* StarMakingRole:
** Creator/AllegraClark's multiple roles as Atalanta, Semiramis and Reika pretty much made her name well known in the anime dub industry and she keeps racking up further roles afterwards.
** Downplayed with Creator/JoeZieja. He did gain some notices in anime work thanks to his role as Achilles, but not as much as several others. He'd gain his bigger one later in ''VideoGame/FireEmblemThreeHouses''.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** The project was originally meant to be an online multiplayer game. Though it became a series of light novels instead, the original idea would later become the mobile game ''VideoGame/FateGrandOrder''.
** The revival opted against using [[Literature/TheBible King David]], [[Myth/JapaneseMythology Sakata Kintoki]], UsefulNotes/MusashiboBenkei, and Myth/SaintGeorge, introducing new Servants instead. The four were later brought back for ''Grand Order''.
*** Kintoki was scrapped because he was a third Berserker, and he would be too moral to go along with the Red Faction's plans.
*** Benkei was scrapped because he was a third Lancer, and Higashide wanted to also avoid having [[spoiler:another Japanese servant]]. His complex personality meant he would also probably have difficulty working with a Master.
*** St. George was cut for the sake of diversity ([[spoiler:he would've been a ''third'' Christian saint]]). His ability to turn opponents into dragons would have also [[spoiler:diminished the impact of Sieg's transformation into Fafnir]].
*** David was scrapped due to George being replaced by Achilles, as Higashide wanted to also introduce Chiron as the latter's rival. David could have potentially had some kind of special relationship with Jeanne, but that role had already been given to Atalanta.
** Vlad was actually going to be of the Berserker class, differentiating from his ''VideoGame/FateExtra'' counterpart who's of the Lancer class. For some reason, he became Lancer once more (though he was brought back as a Berserker in ''VideoGame/FateGrandOrder'')
** Jeanne was going to be the FinalBoss of the scrapped online game project.
** Gordes was planned to die in the first novel for his treatment of Siegfried but his general incompetence throughout the plot led to him being reworked into a bumbling comic relief character who [[spoiler:manages to survive all the way to the end of the War.]]
** Shakespeare was going to have a Noble Phantasm called The Globe: The King's Men that allowed him to change his appearance to anyone he chose.
** Karna was supposed to use his "weapons are not necessary, a true hero kills with a stare" line in a scene in the light novel; this was later used as his Extra Attack dialogue in ''VideoGame/FateGrandOrder''.
** Atalanta had a few scrapped abilities. She would have been able to summon the golden apples from her legend, which would be irresistible and attract unwary people to them. She would have had a Noble Phantasm called The Seven Arrows of the Big Dipper, where she would fire seven arrows, and after the first one hit a target, the other six would relentlessly chase the target down. What eventually became Agrius Metamorphosis was originally two Noble Phantasms. The Disputed Spoils of War was the pelt of the Calydonian Boar, which enhanced her speed for running in a straight line and could confuse her opponents and make them fight each other. The Beast of Divine Punishment was her putting the pelt on to enhance her strength, speed, and durability, and allow her to heal every time she inflicted damage on an opponent. Also, whenever she used Phoebus Catastrophe, she would first send an {{Arrowgram}} into the sky, where it would randomly reach either Artemis or Apollo. If it reached Artemis, her arrows would only target women in the area. If it reached Apollo, her arrows would only target men in the area. This was scrapped for being too complicated.
