----
* AccidentallyCorrectWriting: Eliot mispronounces "daemon", but that's actually realistic as it's unlikely he ever heard the word spoken aloud. (His pronunciation of "gnome" is not this, it's actually how most people pronounce it, even though it isn't the official pronunciation.)
* AcclaimedFlop: Despite rubbing shoulders with esteemed shows such as ''Series/BreakingBad'' in terms of critical praise, the series had shockingly abysmal ratings. However, it was this same prestige that convinced USA Network to see it through four seasons, and to a natural conclusion.
* ActingForTwo:
** [[spoiler: Christian Slater, since technically, Mr. Robot and Edward Alderson are separate characters.]]
** [[spoiler: Rami Malek]] also technically counts as he plays both [[spoiler: Elliot and Mr. Robot]], and we see him act as both.
** Unless you're willing to plant some EpilepticTrees, Mabel Tyler plays both the girl Angela meets in the Season 2 finale and a younger Angela in Season 3.
** [[spoiler: The ending of eXit, where the real Elliot finds the main Elliot at his computer in his apartment.]]
* ActorInspiredHeroism: When there were other actors auditioning for the role of Elliot, he was at first shown to be egotistical and unlikable, but when Rami Malek took over and auditioned, he gave more depth to him and made him a more sympathetic and likable hero he is known as today.
* AdoredByTheNetwork: The series was renewed for four seasons despite very low ratings thanks to being an AcclaimedFlop, and USA Network was willing to not run advertisements during certain episodes to preserve the integrity of the episodes. For instance, the episode where Elliot is TrappedInTVLand ran retro network promos from The90s and an old Bud Light ad instead of actual commercials, while TheOner episode ran ''no'' commercials so as to not break the simulated single take.
* AwesomeDearBoy: Sam Esmail has stated that his admiration of Joey Bada$$'s music greatly influenced his desire for the rapper to play Leon. Bada$$, in turn, accepted because he was very intrigued by the show's premise.
* CareerResurrection: To put it plainly, this show reminded a ''lot'' of people as to why Christian Slater was considered "it" early in his career.
* CastTheRunnerUp: Ahead of Season 2, Creator/AshlieAtkinson auditioned for Dom. Sam Esmail found her wrong for the role but kept her in mind when casting the Season 4 role of Dom's Dark Army handler, Janice.
* CharacterOutlivesActor: It's unknown if Flipper reunites with Elliot after the series end, but Sam Esmail revealed that the dog who plays her, Dustee passed away before they began filming Season 4, which explains her absence.
* TheDanza: Grant Chang plays Whiterose's NumberTwo, Grant.
* DarkhorseCasting: This was the American debut of Martin Wallstrom and Creator/StephanieCorneliussen, since Martin was only popular in his home country, Sweden while Stephanie was a model before they both got cast as Tyrell and Joanna.
* DawsonCasting: Sunita Mani, who played Shama "Trenton" Biswas (aged 18) is 32 in real life.
* DistancedFromCurrentEvents: USA Network postponed the first season finale after two news reporters from Virginia were shot and killed by an ex-employee from the station they worked for while their story was being broadcast on live TV. The plot had a similar event: [[spoiler: An Evil Corp executive shoots himself during a press conference.]]
* KilledByRequest: [[spoiler:It was always planned for Angela to be killed on orders from Whiterose in Season 4, but her death was moved to the very beginning of the season at Creator/PortiaDoubleday's request.]]
* TheOtherDarrin:
** In the first episode, Mobley was portrayed by Jason Rees and in an unaired pilot Romero was portrayed by Michael Buscemi.
** Young Elliot was always portrayed by Aidan Liebman until Season 3, where he was replaced by Alex Bento.
* PlayingAgainstType: Ray is a far more serious role than Creator/CraigRobinson is known for, as his regular roles are comedic in nature.
* PlayingWithCharacterType: Creator/ChristianSlater has been known for darkly charismatic roles since ''Film/{{Heathers}}'' and had even starred in another thriller series with a JekyllAndHyde theme, ''Series/MyOwnWorstEnemy''. ''Mr. Robot'', though, played with things by showing him as another aspect of the stoical Elliot and revealing that this personality derives from Elliot and Darlene's [[spoiler: seemingly]] kind and decent father.
* RomanceOnTheSet: Rami Malek and Portia Doubleday, although they'd broken up towards the end of the show, which was said to be at least partially why Angela's character exited the show.
* StarMakingRole: Creator/RamiMalek had spent at least a decade doing mostly supporting roles in movies and TV, but playing Elliot Alderson was what established him as a major actor in both realms of entertainment.
* TransCharacterCisActor: Cis actor Creator/BDWong plays transgender woman hacker Whiterose. Justified in that Whiterose is a Chinese government official who is still in the closet and thus must appear as a man in public.
