!! The Game
* VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles has one about half way through. [[spoiler:Isara getting shot and killed out of nowhere. It doesn't help that she [[GoOutWithASmile dies with a smile on her face]].]]
** Then in the next cut scene [[spoiler:Rosie only being able to fill her promise to Isara by singing at her graveside is sad, the fact that the song is beautiful makes it totally heartbreaking.]]
** And in the ending, when [[spoiler:Welkin asked Alicia "How's Isara been today?", and out came their daughter.]] This one isn't directly a TearJerker by itself but still, if you know ''why'' it's like this...
*** And [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_fMrxBQSPQ the song]] helps with the mood.
* Selvaria's situation, in general, is saddening, rage-inducing, and horrifying all at once. She was orphaned and spent the bulk of her youth as a lab rat until Maxmillian took her in as one of his generals. This caused her to fall in love with him and pledge her eternal servitude to his cause, believing him to be an honourable, benevolent prince who saved her from a life of misery and gave her a sense of purpose. However, in reality, Maxmillian was a sleazy, opportunistic, manipulator who viewed her as little more than a means to achieve his ends. The moment he caught onto Selvaria's feelings for him, he became a MasterOfTheMixedMessage and used all manner of DirtySocialTricks to convince her that she only had a right to his love and affection if she did his bidding. By the time we see her in-story, the manipulation has gone so far and so deep (which makes one [[FridgeHorror wonder]] if [[QuestionableConsent more than just words]] was involved) that she is pretty much willing to do ''anything and everything'' if it means Maxmillian will love her. And how is this pure love and tireless devotion rewarded? [[spoiler: By being asked to be a suicide-bomber by none other than the object of her love himself to win a war that ''he'' started. And she goes through with it because by this point she is so broken she has nothing more to live for. Her last words before she blows herself up is the icing on this depressing cake - "Farewell, my lord Maximillian. All glory to you."]]
** As if that wasn't enough, [[PunchClockVillain General Jaeger]] had been a silent spectator to all of this from the get-go. Imagine watching your friend throw herself at a clearly abusive, manipulative man and bend over backwards to please him on a regular basis, but being unable to do anything about it because said man is your boss. Him finding out about [[spoiler: Maximillian ordering her to use her Final Flame]] was the absolute last straw. He only says a few words to voice his disapproval, but you can tell that he's seething with rage and resisting the urge to beat Maximillian to a bloody pulp. And even then, it's too little, too late. His friend and co-worker had already made up her mind to [[spoiler: basically die for him as she has nothing more to live for.]]
* In Chapter 8, imperial soldier Fritz gets separated from his squad, and shot several times, and has to stagger to the only shelter he could find, only to die begging for his mother. This scene drives home the point that every soldier on the battlefield has a family to go home to, a life outside of this crazy war. It's not too difficult to see how hearing him cry out for his mother can trigger Vietnam flashbacks for some people.
* For everyone other than Welkin, Alicia, Largo, Rosie and Zaka, [[KilledOffForReal death on the field is permanent]]. Add this to the fact that every recruit has their own model, personality, biography, and fully voiced death sequence, and this trope is a possible reaction to '''JUST ABOUT ANY SQUAD MEMBER''' dying in battle. Listed below are some particular sad deaths:
--> '''[[TechnicalPacifist Susie]] [[ReluctantWarrior Evans]]''': "This is why I...detest war... Too many have...already killed and...been killed..."
--> '''[[ShellShockedVeteran Catherine]] [[IronWoobie O'Hara]]''': "Heh heh...It's strange...I feel this is...better than losing...a comrade..."
--> '''[[LadyOfWar Lynn]]''': "Ahh... [[BattleCouple Karl]]... I love you... I'll always..."
--> '''[[PluckyComicRelief Ted Ustinov]]''': "I-Is this... really the punch line...? If so, I...I'm not laughing..."
--> '''[[ChildSoldier Aisha Neumann]]''': "Welkin? Help, I'm scared... Please don't let me... I don't wanna die..."
--> '''[[TheCameo Vyse]] [[TheDeterminator Inglebard]]''': "Heh...sorry, [[ShipTease Aika]]... Looks like... my adventure ends... here..."
* The [[spoiler:Darcsen concentration camp being burned down at the end of mission 10]] is a disturbing enough scene on its own. Taken in context with the later revelation [[spoiler:that Rosie's family died in a fire caused during a Darcsen hunt makes her reaction all the more potent]]. Seemed that one hit too close to home.
* Once you've played through Selvaria's DLC, you'll never feel the same way about shooting Oswald the Iron dead in Chapter 10. At least, if you think [[spoiler:he's KilledOffForReal instead of [[http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Johann_Oswald_Eisen getting back up with different titles all the time]]]].
* [[spoiler:Alicia]] planning a HeroicSacrifice in Chapter 16 by [[spoiler:using her Valkyria powers]], especially with this line in particular:
-->'''[[spoiler:Alicia]]''': If only I weren't a [[spoiler:Valkyria]], things would be just like they were before, wouldn't they?
