!!ESBB
* AbusiveParents: In E25, Edits briefly mentions that his father was [[AlcoholicParent an alcoholic]] who abused him. His dad died a year ago, and he felt absolutely nothing.
* AccidentalMisnaming: Eliza's father initially refers to Edits as "Edward".
* AerithAndBob: Characters with normal names like Kyle, Albert, and Eliza exist alongside more unusual names like Edits and 9/17.
* AffectionateNickname: Eliza's parents often call her Lizzie. She uses it, too, often when reassuring herself, and it's part of her username on social media.
* AfraidOfBlood: Kyle and Cindy are both ''very'' uncomfortable around blood.
* AggressiveCategorism: In "[=LouisLynn=]", Icelynn claims that everyone who doesn't eat meat is an asshole.
* TheAlcoholic: Honey tends to start her mornings by drinking wine, and relies on it to get through her workday.
* AllJustADream: The weirdness in E20 is explained by [[spoiler:the entire thing being a simulated story by Risi. ASK had asked it to write a Halloween story involving Egor. He's pretty horrified by the results.]]
* AlliterativeName:
** Lance Lilly.
** "Mrs. Lilly's Corporate Clash!" introduces sergeants Parker Picallo and, for a phonetic variant, Kari Cadogan.
* AlliterativeTitle:
** "Barely Beloved"
** "Butt Buddies"
** "The Sweetest Sauce"
** "Kari Cadogan's Crying Corner!"
* AlwaysIntroducesThemselves: Kyle tends to introduce himself with "Yo, I'm Kyle!"
* AmbiguouslyAbsentParent: While Edits' father is known to be dead, nothing is said about his mother.
* AmicableExes: Eliza doesn't hold anything against Honey after they break up. In fact, she encourages her current boyfriend to meet her.
* AnAesop:
** E24:
*** A healthy relationship involves respecting the other person's boundaries and giving them their own space.
*** While going through a breakup can be difficult, it's not the end of the world. You'll always be able to find someone new.
** E25: Repressing grief isn't helpful, and you need to acknowledge it to get closure. Talk about it with people you trust, and do something respectful in honor of the deceased.
* AncestralName: E25 reveals that Eliza was named in honor of her father's great-grandmother, Elizabeth, who was the first in the family to start her own bakery.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Part of the reason Icelynn is so awful to her sister is because Marvelynn talks a ''lot'', often going off into irrelevant tangents. She's undeterred because she simply believes Icelynn's abusiveness is ToughLove.
* AnswerCut: In "SUPER NORMAL", the complex gets crushed by a giant monster. Eliza asks if everyone made it out okay. Cut to ASK and Egor throwing a birthday party for Kyle -- [[BlackComedyBurst who's not there]], [[DramaticIrony and assuredly did not survive.]]
* AntiAdvice: In "[=LouisLynn=]", Icelynn is trying to make Louis's vacation as miserable as possible. To plan for the day, she asks herself what Marvelynn would think the most fun thing to do is. She settles on a walking tour and thus makes them go. They both hate it, but Icelynn thinks it's WorthIt.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion:
** In E22-E23, Albert is determined to keep everyone in the complex safe when a blizzard is happening outside. However, he goes to KnightTemplar levels by seizing everyone's food to share it collectively, cutting off Kyle's electricity in response to his misbehavior, and smashing Edits' phone because Kyle was using it to smuggle stuff out of his room. ASK manages to get him to change by bringing up just how destructive his behavior has been, finishing with "is all of this really helping?" ASK then tells him that he can still bring everything back to normal because, as he had promised everyone, they ''are'' all still alive despite all of it.
** In E26, when Kyle brings up Edits' gun, Honey is horrified. Edits justifies it by saying that he's allowed to keep one on the job. Honey's response: "So if it's just for your job, why do you need one at home?" Edits struggles to think of a response until he admits that he has a planned suicide, leading Honey to [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech call him out.]]
* ArtShift: Marvelynn's [=OCs=] are drawn in a [[SuperDeformed chibi]] style with more details and colors than regular characters.
* AssholeVictim:
** Icelynn is the first person that Eliza murders in E20. However, she had been constantly rude to Edits and Eliza, when Eliza was genuinely trying to reason with her and even cooked her dinner.
** Eliza also goes to murder Mr. Adderson, Edits' old boss who severely mistreated him.
* AssuranceBackfire:
** In E19, Eliza is trying to calm down a nervous new employee, Cindy, about what her job is like. [[ConditionedToAcceptHorror Eliza cheerfully]] acts out pulling a knife out of a corpse; it doesn't help.
** At the end of E23, Kyle tries to reassure Edits that even if Edits' gun got taken away, at least they're back together. Kyle's actions led to Edits' gun being taken in the first place, and Edits spent much of the episode refusing to visit him. This pushes Edits to collapsing into bed and crying.
* AwesomeMcCoolName: Eliza thinks that "Lance Lilly" is "the coolest name you can ''ever'' have!"
* BadBoss: Edits' old boss, Mr. Adderson, back when he worked at an ice cream parlor. He forces him to work mandatory overtime, pays him below minimum wage, and outright tells Edits once he's replaceable when he resigns.
* BadLiar:
** In "Eliza's Unquenchable Blood Lust!", Eliza murders Icelynn and has to cover up why she's hasn't been there. She says that she's just been at the dentist, and has a very bad cavity that'll take months to fix.
** In a desperate attempt to get out of a meeting with Honey, [[INeedToGoIronMyDog Eliza says she has to mail Kyle a birthday present]]. Edits points out that Kyle's birthday is five months away.
* BenevolentBoss: Mrs. Lilly treats her employees well, and in "Kyle Latimore Ruined My Life", explains that she tries to connect to them on a personal level. Edits and Eliza both trust her and regularly ask her for advice. In E23, she doesn't hesitate to scour the city in the middle of a blizzard to find where Edits had collapsed, and thus ends up saving his life.
* TheBet: "[=LouisLynn=]" centers around a bet between Louis and Icelynn: they take a trip together, have to try to aggravate each other as much as possible, and the one who gives up and wants to go home ends up paying for everything on the trip. In the end, after much humiliation, hypocrisy, and annoyance on both sides, they mutually call it off just because they hate being around each other that much.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: It takes a lot to make Eliza angry. But when she does, she goes to ''scary'' lengths to bring justice.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Even when Lydia [[CameBackWrong comes back wrong]], Eliza's still overjoyed to have her sister back. She spends much of the episode trying to find a place where her sister is accepted, defending her from people who don't like her. In the end, Eliza and Lydia agree that, since Lydia's in pain from merely existing, the best thing to do is simply let her die again.
* BigSisterBully: Icelynn is verbally and physically abusive to her younger sister Marvelynn, mainly because she finds her annoying.
* BigStormEpisode: In E22 to E23, a massive blizzard traps everyone inside Albert's complex. This prevents anyone from getting in or out, and Albert's attempts to keep everything under control are patronizing and unhelpful. The situation gets so bad that Edits decides to take his chances in the blizzard and go somewhere else, but in the process, ends up fainting and being hospitalized from the bad weather conditions. Even when the snowstorm clears up, Edits is unsure if he wants to return to the complex.
* BirthdayEpisode: "Your Phone But Better" begins with Kyle and Edits taking Egor out for frozen yogurt on his 9th birthday, then taking him home for a party with ASK. The phone that ASK gives Egor for his birthday ends up being an integral part of the plot.
* BittersweetEnding:
** Eliza's actions throughout "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!" are solely so she can be with her beloved sister again. At the end, she's forced to concede that some things just end and can't be brought back. But she still values the good times she had with Lydia while they lasted.
** By the end of E20, Edits has a fresh start and has begun working with Alice, whom he gets along well with. ASK and Egor have found a reasonable alternative to satisfying Egor's {{bloodlust}}. But Eliza, who's lost her job and her boyfriend, ends up being DrivenToSuicide.
** At the end of E23, Albert agrees to give everyone their stuff back (after being convinced by ASK and Egor), Edits safely returns home, and everyone is better. But between everything they said, Edits and Kyle's relationship will [[NothingIsTheSameAnymore never quite be back to normal]].
** E24: Being in a relationship with Honey makes Eliza more happy and motivated than ever. But Honey breaks up with Eliza -- and worse than that, she doesn't even want them to be ''platonic'' friends anymore. But Eliza understands what she did wrong, and is confident that she'll meet someone in the future. Plus, the experience introduces her to Tess, a girl who she remains friends with to this day.
* BlankStare: In E26, Edits thinks that Honey likes cookies and tries to make some for her, but they turn out terrible. When he's talking to Honey later that day, she casually says that "cookies suck". Edits is caught off-guard and has a blank, unmoving expression before hesitantly agreeing with her.
* {{Bloodlust}}:
** In E20, Egor gets the idea to taste the blood of one of Eliza's victims. He enjoys it, and this leads to him and Eliza getting addicted to it. It hits Egor harder -- he sneaks out of bed in the middle of the night to feast on a corpse, and starts having nightmarish hallucinations when he's deprived of it. In the end, he and ASK agree on letting him just drink fruit punch as an alternative.
** "SUPER NORMAL" brings back Eliza's bloodlust in full comedic force, making her drinking blood a RunningGag that's treated with none of the seriousness it was previously.
* BodyHorror: When Lydia [[CameBackWrong comes back wrong]], she's absolutely horrifying. She's missing half of her bones, and what few she has are visibly sticking out in places they shouldn't, and her organs regularly fall out of her body.
* BorrowedCatchphrase: In E22, Albert always addresses the residents with "People of Albert's Country!" in his morning meetings. When ASK gathers some residents together to make a plan, he says the same thing, to Mavnol's annoyance.
* BothSidesHaveAPoint:
** In E19, Edits and Eliza's attempts at writing an introductory speech differ. When they read it, Edits ends up taking it into an overly dark direction by focusing solely on the scarring things employees witness on the job. Eliza saves it by reassuring the recruits that there's plenty of fun to be had in making friends and working with them. After the speech, they debate what ended up happening. Edits points out that [[BrutalHonesty even if it seems harsh, it's best to be upfront about a job so people know what to expect]]. Eliza responds that he's focusing too much on the negative aspects of the job, not giving any reasons as to ''why'' people would want to do it. Both of these are valid.
** Edits and Kyle's conflict in E22/E23. Yes, it's true that Edits was basically outright ignoring Kyle by choosing to do busywork he didn't even need to do. But he's right to be upset with Kyle; they have very little in common, and Kyle's impulsive actions end up severely harming both of them.
* BreatherEpisode:
** Following an incredibly dark two-parter is "Eliza's Extremely Lesbian Adventures!" This one is less continuity-heavy and more comedy-focused, telling the story of Eliza's FirstLove and her extreme lovesickness at the time.
** After the WhamEpisode "The Sweetest Sauce", "Mrs. Lilly's Corporate Clash!" has a lighter conflict and doesn't focus on Edits, Eliza, or Honey.
* BrickJoke:
** "[=LouisLynn=]" starts with Louis getting a free plane trip by claiming to be Icelynn's relative and saying he always flies with her, forcing her to pay for both tickets. When they land, Icelynn makes it clear that they won't be cheating each other out of money for the rest of the trip, which Louis actually agrees to (he thinks it's too easy). But at the very end of the episode, Icelynn steals Louis's wallet so he can't fly back home.
** In "SUPER NORMAL", Eliza pulls out a list of things she's scared of, with one of them being macaroons. Everyone just takes this as a bit of insanity. But towards the end, she [[ProperlyParanoid catches a macaroon on her back]], throws it on the floor, and stomps on it.
* CallBack:
** In E21, Eliza tries to practice blood play with Edits. This is clearly in reference to E20, where Edits has a ''very'' flustered reaction to Eliza rubbing blood in his face. It fails because Eliza can't find a blood bank willing to lend them any.
** In E24, we learn that Eliza asked Honey out by making her check a box on a paper. In E15, she does something very similar with Edits, asking him to sign his name on a form.
** In E25, when she's planning her revenge on a scammer, Eliza sings "GLITTER" by Music/SaveFace. The last time she did so was in E20, where the song followed a brutal murdering spree.
** E25 mainly revolves around Eliza's dead sister, who originated in "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!" and was mentioned in E24.
** E26 involves Edits' "suicide box" that he was shown to have in E22.
* CameBackWrong: In "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!", Edits uses a magic spell to bring Eliza's little sister, Lydia, back to life. Lydia ends up with heavily discolored skin, bones sticking through her body, her organs falling out, and an inability to speak or even stand up straight. Eliza doesn't let any of this interfere with making more memories with her sister.
* CaringGardener: Flore, an older woman who has a warm and comforting personality. She likes to garden and bake in her free time, as do her granddaughters, Autumn and Marigold.
* CentralTheme:
** Death, and how to process it, are a major theme of the show. Edits and Eliza are both homicide detectives. Kyle's near-death experiences and inability to come to terms with dying are often brought up when he appears. Eliza has a long-dead sister and used to date someone who ended up being a mortician.
** Romance is another central theme: how it changes people for the better, and the different kinds of it that exist. For example, E19 focuses on pure, romantic love, E21 explores the role sex should play in relationships, and E24 shows a more shallow and one-sided relationship.
* ChangingYourselfForLove: To illustrate her growing obsession with Honey in E24, Eliza begins using some of her speech mannerisms and even dresses in the same kind of clothes she wears. It doesn't do anything to improve Honey's already low opinion of her.
* CharacterShilling: Parodied in E24. Eliza repeatedly talks about how cute and amazing Honey is, and that she's "literally the best person [Eliza's] ever met." While Honey isn't a ''bad '' person, she's an overweight, gloomy college student who's unapproachable and doesn't care about making friends.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** Edits' personality in the earliest episodes is quite different. While he's still a {{Workaholic}} with a strong sense of justice, he [[IWorkAlone hates working with others]] and is generally disdainful to them. When he gets with Eliza, she turns out to be a PositiveFriendInfluence on him; he's not only much nicer, but open to meeting new people in non-work situations. A flashback in E15 shows that Edits' development was brought on by Mrs. Lilly telling him that he needs to give people a chance and support them so they can bring out their full potential.
** In her first three episodes, Eliza is still a NiceGirl who can reason with Edits, but she's merely portrayed as a casual friend of his. "Full-Time Commitment" would focus on Eliza more in-depth, starting her relationship with Edits, and showing off more of her excitable personality and dedication to him.
* ChekhovsGun:
** In E20, when Kyle is worried about a supposed murderer going around the complex and thinks that he'll be targeted, Edits shows him how to use pepper spray. This ends up being the exact thing he uses, just in time, to prevent Mrs. Lilly from being murdered by Eliza.
** In E22, Albert uses a "topic jar" as part of a childish game he forces the complex members to play: assigning everyone tables, then having them discuss some cheesy topic based on a slip of paper he pulls from the jar. For the climax of E23, ASK and Egor steal the jar and write their own slips. They catch Albert off-guard with the game to make him re-evaluate his thoughts and realize he needs to forgive everyone.
** Edits' "suicide box" is a recurring symbol throughout E22 and E23. In E26, it ends up coming again when Honey is horrified that he needs one. Edits burying his box in his own grave at the end of the episode is symbolic of him having moved past his suicidal thoughts and his desire to keep living.
* {{Cliffhanger}}: By the end of E22, Edits is out in a blizzard and headed somewhere unknown, Kyle is locked in a room with a gun, and Albert has stolen all the complex members' food and cut their electricity. This all gets followed up in the next episode.
* ComedicWorkSeriousScene: E24 is a BreatherEpisode that mainly focuses on the exploits of an extremely lovestruck Eliza, who can't seem to understand that [[FirstLove Honey]] doesn't particularly care to spend so much time with her. However, there is a scene midway through where Eliza walks in on Honey studying thanatology, leading her to ask if dead people go to Heaven. It turns out that Eliza had a sister who died when both of them were young, and she never truly got over it. Honey, who HatesBeingTouched, winds up feeling so bad for Eliza that she [[PetTheDog actually gives her a hug]].
* CommonalityConnection: Eliza and Honey do have a few similarities: they're both fans of a TV show, they're both studying to be in fields dealing with death, and they're both LGBTQ. This sets up a promising friendship, but Eliza's clinginess quickly puts an end to it.
* ComplimentBackfire: Honey has a bigger build than Eliza. Eliza thinks it's cute and regularly points it out, but it's clear that Honey doesn't really see it the same way.
* ContinuityCavalcade: E22 and E23 involve ''every'' member of the complex, including [[TheBusCameBack ones who had largely been ignored]].
* ContinuityNod:
** In E19, Kyle mentions the events of E16 as something that he adapted into a song.
** In E20, Eliza is caught in a lie and begins sweating nervously. When Mrs. Lilly points this out, she claims it's too hot and goes to turn the temperature down. Edits did the exact same thing in E15 when Eliza noticed him blushing after one of her advances. She even says the exact same line he did.
** In E24, Eliza notes that she's "''done'' consulting random books for relationship advice." She did exactly this in E21, and it didn't work out for her or Edits.
** In E16, Eliza reveals that [[FormerlyFat she used to be fat as a kid]]. This gets brought up again in E23, and she's noticeably chubbier in a flashback to her sophomore year in E24.
** In E24, the way Eliza lists off what she loves about Honey is similar to how she defends Edits in "Butt Buddies".
** In E26, when Eliza's telling Honey what she's done since college, she mentions the events of "Butt Buddies" and "ELIZA'S GUIDE TO FAKING YOUR DEATH".
** In E26, Eliza reminds Edits about the time Honey helped her get over her sister's death, which happened in "Eliza's Extremely Lesbian Adventures!"
** In "SUPER NORMAL", Edits' costume for a Halloween party is his Sunshine Cone uniform from "Kyle Latimore Ruined My Life".
** "Mrs. Lilly's Corporate Clash!" has Lance making Mrs. Lilly mashed potatoes. Mrs. Lilly had previously mentioned that he does this in "Not Always Romantic", since it was [[ThroughHisStomach the food she made him on their first date]].
** In "[=LouisLynn=]", Icelynn still thinks Edits is a slut, like she did in "Eliza's Unquenchable Blood Lust!".
** In "[=LouisLynn=]", Louis mentions a professional gamer by the name of [=Ploomtauce924=]. "PLOOM" and "TAUCE" are two of the abbreviations Eliza finds in her guidebook in "SUPER NORMAL".
** In "ICELYNN'S GUIDE TO LUCK & LIABILITY", Icelynn has to call someone. She considers Louis, but comments that it wouldn't work because she broke his phone, which she did in "[=LouisLynn=]".
* CoupleThemeNaming:
** Edits and Eliza, who both have names that start with an E, an I in the middle, and are five letters long.
** E27 introduces married couple Flore and Fiorenzo, matching their family's FloralThemeNaming.
** Aciano and Saffron, the parents of Marigold and Autumn, are both named after flowers.
* CrossReferencedTitles:
** "Eliza's Unquenchable Blood Lust!" and "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!", both non-canon {{Halloween Episode}}s revolving around Eliza.
** "Never Be Alone Again" and "Never Going Home Again" are both Kyle-focused episodes.
** "The Great Tale of How Kyle Ruined It All", "ELIZA'S GUIDE TO FAKING YOUR DEATH", and "ICELYNN'S GUIDE TO LUCK & LIABILITY" are all named after Music/{{Jhariah}} albums.
* CruelTwistEnding: "[=LouisLynn=]" ends with Louis and Icelynn agreeing to call the bet off, and Icelynn returns home safely. But it's revealed that she one-upped Louis one last time: she drove away in the car they rented together and stole all his money, leaving him stranded in another town with no way to get home.
* DamnedByFaintPraise: In E26, when Edits learns that he betrayed Honey's trust and she drank to forget about him, he admits that he messed up badly. Tess can't even defend his actions and just says that at ''least'' he realizes it.
* DarkestHour: "Kyle Latimore Ruined My Life" shows a flashback of Edits and Kyle at their absolute lowest. Edits has a miserable job and can't pay rent, so Albert waives it for him. Kyle moves in, wanting to escape his own crappy situation, but puts a financial strain on both of them. Edits is forced to sell most of his clothes for rent money and starts scrounging for food in the garbage. Kyle is evicted, and while Edits' life does slightly improve after he gets a job he enjoys that pays better, Kyle gets mugged after a few days on the streets. The experience of a bloodied, bruised Kyle admitting that he's been eating his own vomit in order to survive eventually convinces Edits to let him move back in.
* ADayInTheLimelight:
** "The Sweetest Sauce" focuses on Honey, Eliza's ex-girlfriend.
** "Mrs. Lilly's Corporate Clash!" is mainly about Mrs. Lilly and her friends.
** "Malpractice Makes Perfect" stars Doctor Patrick, Mavnol, Louis, and Albert -- four characters who had been largely OutOfFocus before then.
** "Kari Cadogan's Crying Corner!" for Kari.
** "A Conventional Story" for Cindy.
** "[=LouisLynn=]" focuses entirely on Icelynn, Louis, and to a lesser extent, Marvelynn.
** "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict" gives major roles to Icelynn and Marvelynn.
* DeathGlare:
** Honey glares at Eliza once she [[HatesBeingTouched hugs her]] and [[ComplimentBackfire calls her "huggable".]]
** Eliza gives the fake Lydia a very threatening glare when she's going into her house to get the money back.
* DeceptivelySillyTitle: "Butt Buddies", despite its silly title, is actually a down-to-earth and introspective look at Edits and Eliza's relationship.
* DelayedReaction: In "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!", Edits calls Kyle to tell him that he's going out with Eliza -- and they're raising the dead. Kyle thinks it's cute at first, but realizes what Edits just said and gives a BigWhat before Edits hangs up.
* DenserAndWackier: "SUPER NORMAL" is straight out of a ZanyCartoon, full of crazy jokes and illogical happenings.
* DescriptionCut: In E22, when Albert is preparing a group activity nobody actually wants to do, Anthony asks if he should be ensuring they have enough food instead. Albert happily responds that the residents are always in his heart and mind... then we cut to see Louis and 9/17 stuck at the concession counter because he hasn't been there to sell them anything.
* DespairEventHorizon: Kyle spends the entirety of E23 trying to get Edits to come back home after he left the complex. When his attempts only lead to Edits' phone being destroyed, Edits telling him he has no value as a person, and Albert shutting off his electricity and barring him from getting food, Kyle is left in a completely broken state, having given up on all hope of getting Edits back and accepting his situation as the new normal. ASK and Egor end up saving everything instead.
* DisposingOfABody: In E20, Eliza kills Icelynn and throws her body in the dumpster. When Edits tells her that a detective squad is being sent to her house to investigate, she panics. They take Icelynn's decayed corpse out of the dumpster and burn it in the basement furnace.
* DissonantSerenity: In E20, Edits and Egor have a great time hitting the town. Their activities mostly being brutally murdering innocents. On a similar note, Eliza cheerfully drags Icelynn's corpse out to the dumpster to hide it.
* TheDogBitesBack: In "[=LouisLynn=]", after being out of the house for a few days, Icelynn calls Marvelynn and finds that [[spoiler:Marvelynn has actually made some friends and invited them over. She didn't do it out of spite and they didn't mess with Icelynn's stuff or anything, it's just that Icelynn can't stand to see her sister happy]].
* DoubleMeaningTitle: "The Sweetest Sauce" can refer to either Honey herself, the steak with red wine sauce she makes for Edits, or wine (since she's an alcoholic).
* DownerBeginning: E26 begins with Honey administering a funeral, where the couple mourning the death of their child can't even go through with it and have her read out the speech instead. Things go FromBadToWorse when someone is promptly ''murdered'' outside of the funeral home.
* DudeNotFunny: In "[=LouisLynn=]", Louis slaps Icelynn in response to her making a joke about Marvelynn eating drywall and dying, because he genuinely liked Marvelynn at that point.
* EarlyBirdCameo:
** Eliza's parents first appear in flashbacks in "If You're Not Edits, Eat Breakfast" and "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!" They have major roles in "ELIZA'S GUIDE TO FAKING YOUR DEATH".
** Kari makes a brief appearance in "SUPER NORMAL", before her proper debut in "Mrs. Lilly's Corporate Clash!"
** Icelynn is introduced in "Eliza's Unquenchable Blood Lust!", being the first target of Eliza's murders. She's only in that one for a few minutes, but later episodes like "[=LouisLynn=]" and "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict" give her major roles in the plot.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness:
** The show's earliest episodes were not only very short, but core concepts of it hadn't been established yet. The entirety of it was set in the complex, featuring characters who eventually stopped appearing like Doctor Patrick and Guy, and it wasn't established what Edits' job was (it took until E10 to confirm it, and E12 was the first to show it).
** Kyle was the main character of many earlier episodes, but he doesn't appear as much after "Kyle Latimore Ruined My Life".
** When Icelynn first shows up in "Eliza's Unquenchable Blood Lust!", she doesn't use any of the {{Lame Comeback}}s she'd later be known for. Also, Marvelynn doesn't appear in this one nor is she mentioned, because she wouldn't be introduced until season 2.
* EarnYourHappyEnding:
** E25: After all the grief Eliza goes through with accepting her sister's death, she successfully realizes that there's nothing to worry about, all the while getting personal revenge against a criminal who had scammed her parents out of their money. The episode ends with Edits and Eliza hosting a bake sale to [[SupportYourParents raise money for Eliza's parents]], while also paying tribute to Eliza's sister, who wanted to be a baker.
** E26: When Edits mistakenly offends Honey, she abruptly ends their friendship. However, Edits feels so bad about what he did that he has to find a way to make it up to her. Honey, meanwhile, is unable to cope with losing one of her only close friends. When Edits [[HeartfeltApology apologizes to Honey and says that she made him a better person, and demonstrates that he's making a change to ensure the problem won't happen again]], Honey understands and they end up on better terms.
* EmbarrassingFirstName: Honey goes by her last name, since she hates her first name of Sunflowertavia. Eliza bursts out laughing when she first hears it, and Honey gets so annoyed that she punches her in the face to shut her up.
-->'''Honey''': People like ''you'' are why I go by Honey.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Honey's roommate, Tess, calls her "Honeybun", which she is known to dislike.
* EmptyBedroomGrieving: Lydia's bedroom is exactly as her parents left it. They can't stand to go inside, and even when Eliza does, she's incredibly sad about it.
* EndOfEpisodeSilliness:
** "Butt Buddies" ends with a BrickJoke where Edits and Eliza finally "have fun in bed", by building pillow forts together.
** In E24, Eliza, Cindy, Alice, and Mrs. Lilly are playing truth or dare at a party. Cindy, having been through a break-up, asks Eliza if she'll ever find anyone again. Eliza reassures her that she will, and goes into a story about her growing obsession with her first girlfriend, and subsequent break-up and falling out, which makes up a majority of the episode. At the end, she asks Mrs. Lilly if ''she'' had any relationships before meeting her husband, expecting another exciting and moving story. Mrs. Lilly simply answers that she didn't. Everyone goes silent.
--->'''Eliza''': ...Alright, thanks for sharing! Who’s going next? ''(episode ends)''
* TheEndingChangesEverything: Throughout E26, Honey's behavior -- complaining to Edits about her mortician job, her [[DeathGlare response]] to Eliza almost asking if she has a girlfriend, her [[TheAlcoholic wine-drinking habits]] -- seem to just be an extension of her usual gloomy personality. Her resulting friendship with Edits is just her HiddenHeartOfGold coming out since she doesn't get many chances to make friends. But near the end, Tess explains that Honey had witnessed her girlfriend ''commit suicide'' out of absolute nowhere, scarring her. Tess had been guiding Honey to help her take control of her life again and move past this incident. Honey hates her job because the industry is predatory to grieving families, and she drinks wine to cope with the stress. When Edits hears about this, he is [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone very remorseful]] for slipping up and triggering her TraumaButton.
* EpicFail: Edits and Eliza's bedroom play in E21. Eliza tries to "dominate" Edits in the bedroom, according to a book she has. She commands him to take his clothes off, but once he starts doing it, she immediately worries that he's cold and tells him to put them back on, even giving him a blanket for warmth. Next, they take turns practicing "sadism", which fails because neither of them can stand to hurt each other.
* EpisodeTagline: "No One Has to Die" and its sequel have the titular phrase repeated throughout. Albert says it while reassuring Kyle that they'll all make it through the snowstorm. When Kyle [[WeaponForIntimidation is forced to threaten Albert with an unloaded gun to get Edits back]], he says it's because ''no one has to die'', and that should include Edits. And it comes up again at the end, when ASK convinces Albert that it's not too late to fix things... because "after all, nobody's dead, are they?"
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: In E24, Eliza worries about making a good impression on Honey and trying to cope with her crush. We finally meet Honey in person when Eliza approaches her at the English center, sharpening her pencil. Honey turns around, stares at Eliza, and asks "...the hell are you?" It sets up Honey as an unenthusiastic, blunt person who doesn't particularly care about making new friends or talking to [[SelfProclaimedLoveInterest Eliza]].
* EvenTheLovingHeroHasHatedOnes:
** Eliza is a social person who has no trouble with making friends. However, she's run into a few people not even she can defend.
*** Eliza has a run-in with resident office {{jerkass}} Icelynn. Despite her best efforts to get on Icelynn's good side, inviting her over for a nice dinner, Icelynn continues to be an UngratefulBastard. In E24, Eliza has no problems with mocking Icelynn. Once it turns out that Icelynn is [[BigSisterBully abusive to her younger sister]], Eliza -- who lost her sister when she was young -- gains even ''more'' contempt for her.
*** In E24, Eliza gets into arguments with her college roommate, Grant. Grant wants Eliza to break up with Honey, repeatedly tells her she's making the wrong choice, and even forces her to go SpeedDating just so she'll hopefully find someone else. It turns out that not only is he just personally against Honey for superficial reasons, but Tess says he's kind of a creep in general. When talking to him with Honey and Tess, Eliza has no problem telling Grant to just fuck off.
*** In E26, Eliza learns that her parents have spent the past few years being scammed by a girl also named Lydia. Lydia assumes the identity of Eliza's dead sister just to make her guilt even worse, and steals money for a scam charity that doesn't actually do anything. When Eliza confronts Lydia and talks about the trauma that losing her sister has caused the family, Lydia remains completely unsympathetic and refuses to give in. This leads Eliza to declare Lydia BeyondRedemption and say that the world would be ''better off'' if she died.
** In "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict", it's shown that Icelynn is HatedByAll. Even [[CaringGardener Flore]], who gets along with everyone, and Mrs. Lilly, a BenevolentBoss who is very reasonable with her workers, feels like she's a lost cause to deal with.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: In E15, Eliza doesn't think that Edits knows she's in love with him and has to confess. When they discuss it, they decide to tell Mrs. Lilly that they're in love. She already knows; she's fully supportive of their relationship. She pulls out some crime scene documentation that makes it clear she's not the only one who knows they're in love.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** In "Eliza's Unquenchable Blood Lust!", Edits is horrified when he learns that Eliza has been murdering people. However, once Eliza explains it, it becomes clear it's a misguided attempt on her part to show her love for him, which makes him soften up and agree not to report her. But when he learns that Eliza [[TheCorruptor corrupted a 9 year old child]] and made him kill people ''with'' her, he immediately tells Mrs. Lilly and shuts down their relationship.
** In "[=LouisLynn=]", Louis and Icelynn actually come to an agreement on what their rules for TheBet are. Namely, they can't steal each other's money or damage each other's property, and Icelynn points out that the latter would just harm them both since they're on the trip together. [[SubvertedTrope At the end, Icelynn breaks both of these rules by smashing Louis's phone and stealing his wallet.]]
** While Louis is willing to do anything for views and laughs, near the end of "[=LouisLynn=]", he's pretty pissed by just how petty Icelynn is being. He flat-out slaps her and says she's "not fucking funny" for relentlessly mocking her sister.
* ExperiencedProtagonist: Edits and Eliza already have a few years of being homicide detectives under their belts when they're introduced.
* ExtremelyProtectiveChild: In E25, once Eliza realizes that her parents have been scammed out of their money (due to them grieving over their daughter's death), she goes to extreme lengths to get the money back.
* ExtremelyShortTimespan: E24 takes place over the course of an hour at most, as Eliza recounts the story of her FirstLove to her friends.
* FamilyThemeNaming:
** E27 introduces the Tagetes family. There's Flore and Fiorenzo (named after terms for flora or flowering), Saffron, Aciano, and Marigold (named after flowers), and Autumn (named after a season where certain plants grow).
** Sisters Icelynn and Marvelynn. Their mother is named Novalynn.
* FauxHorrific: In "[=LouisLynn=]", Louis absolutely ''hates'' the activities Icelynn plans for the second day, which include eating at a vegetarian restaurant and going clothes shopping.
* FictionalSocialNetwork: Characters like Kyle, Eliza, and Mrs. Lilly use a social media website called Social Planet.
* FlawExploitation: In E21, Edits and Eliza have to write an email to the Butt Buddies to explain why they should be on the show. Knowing how exploitative and pervy the host is, Eliza lies that their relationship is in danger of collapsing and they are willing to share spicy details about it. This indeed gets them on.
* FloralThemeNaming: E27 introduces Flore (derived from "flora"), her husband Fiorenzo (derived from "flowering"), and their daughters Saffron and Aciano (named after types of flowers). The same goes for Flore and Fiorenzo's grandchildren Marigold (a flower) and Autumn (a season).
* ForgetsToEat: Edits is such a {{Workaholic}} that he regularly forgoes eating, often only having two meals a day.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** E20 being [[spoiler:just a story]] is hinted at by LethalChef Eliza somehow being able to cook an entire multiple-course meal for her and Icelynn.
** In "[=LouisLynn=]", Icelynn is pissed off by learning that Marvelynn is actually having a wonderful time without her sister at home. This ends up setting up "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict", which suggests that Marvelynn would be better off without Icelynn.
* FormerlyFat: Eliza was fat growing up, due to both of her parents being chefs. In college, she realizes that physical health is important to being a detective, and spends a year or two losing weight.
* FriendlessBackground: Eliza didn't have many friends in college. It's part of why she starts spending so much time with Honey, whom she's genuinely happy around.
* FriendlessnessInsult: In "[=LouisLynn=]", Louis dares Icelynn to call ''one'' friend and tell them about the trip, promising that she wins the day if she does. Icelynn accepts, but she actually doesn't have friends. The people she tries to call are a spam number and her phone service provider. While she's attempting this, Louis calls Marvelynn, who confirms that her sister doesn't have any friends.
* FunWithAcronyms: In "SUPER NORMAL", the new handbook has two nonsensical acronyms: PLOOM (Please Leave Out Other Monsters) and TAUCE (Take Action Unselfishly, Carefully, Efficiently). Edits thinks they're stupid and asks who came up with them: she reads, the ACRONYM team (Academy Crew Reciting O- before Edits cuts her off).
* FurnaceBodyDisposal: In E20, Icelynn's body is finally disposed of by Eliza throwing it into her basement furnace.
* GivenNameReveal:
** Four episodes after her debut, Mrs. Lilly's first name is revealed to be Margaret.
** Eliza's parents debut through a flashback in E16, but only her father, Nathan, is given a name. E25 reveals Eliza's mother's name to be Valerie.
** Eliza's roommate, Spence, had his surname revealed to be Cutts in E20.
** "[=LouisLynn=]" reveals Icelynn and Marvelynn's surname: D'Myracle.
* GluttonyMontage: A college-aged Eliza's attempts to eat at every station in a food hall is shown through a montage. She manages to finish it all, but throws it all up after a few minutes.
* GoodParents:
** Eliza is still on good terms with her parents, whom she visits regularly. They're proud of who she's become and approve of her position in life.
** ASK is a ReasonableAuthorityFigure who cares deeply about his son.
** While she's their grandmother, Flore adores her grandkids and would do anything for them.
* GoshDangItToHeck: Eliza almost exclusively says "oh my gosh". When she does say "oh my God", it means she's ''really'' surprised.
** In "Eliza's Extremely Lesbian Adventures!", Eliza quotes Honey's "shut your goddamn mouth", but censors it to "shut your gosh-darn mouth".
** In "SUPER NORMAL", Eliza says, "ah, I'm in ''such'' a deep pickle" and "what the ''[[LastSecondWordSwap fiddlesticks]]''!?"
* GraveMarkingScene:
** In "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!", Eliza and Edits visit Lydia's grave to resureect her. At the end of the episode, after Eliza comes to terms with letting Lydia go out and be herself... the first thing she does is go into traffic and get hit by a car. Eliza re-buries Lydia's body, but having realized that it's better for both of them if Lydia stays dead, she's content with it.
** In "The Sweetest Sauce", Eliza visits her sister's grave again as a way of avoiding Honey.
* HalloweenEpisode:
** Originally released in October, E20 is a much darker take on the series and features plenty of horrific violence.
** "SUPER NORMAL" has Edits and Eliza become paranormal investigators. They get by on sheer {{Contrived Coincidence}}s and RuleOfFunny.
* HappilyMarried: Mrs. Lilly marries a man named Lance in E19. The two of them enjoy a healthy relationship afterwards.
* HardTruthAesop: In E26, Eliza is nervous about meeting [[FirstLove Honey]] again for the first time in ten years. During the meeting, she ends up mistakenly offending Honey and repeatedly embarrassing herself because she's trying so hard to make a good impression and keep a conversation going. She realizes that her lack of self-control brought on by her InconvenientAttraction to Honey just makes both of them feel worse. So even though she still loves Honey, she spends the rest of the episode trying to avoid her as much as possible.
* HasAType: Lampshaded in E24. When Eliza says that her college girlfriend was stoic and slightly intimidating, Mrs. Lilly immediately picks up on the connection with Edits. Eliza laughs and admits that she does have a type.
* HateSink:
** Icelynn is a terrible person who only gets worse as the series goes on. She's always [[{{Jerkass}} insulting and rude]] to people who are trying to be nice to her. She has a younger sister who she has been bullying, both verbally and physically, for her entire life. "[=LouisLynn=]" also establishes her as a {{Hypocrite}} who [[NeverMyFault blames others for problems she started]].
** Stephen in "Butt Buddies". He runs what appears to be a dating advice channel, but he spends most of his time being very cruel to his guests and actively trying to break them up. Not helping is that he's also kind of perverted, regularly cracking sex jokes and only wanting Edits and Eliza on because they promise to "spare no details" about their relationship. Towards the end, it's revealed that he doesn't even like doing the show and just carries on with it for money. Once Edits and Eliza bring his misdeeds into the public eye, his partner Evelyn has a claim filed against him.
* HatedByAll: ''Nobody'' likes Icelynn. Her coworkers all think she's a drag to be around, and she's so ungrateful and rude that she doesn't have any friends. The only person who likes her, Marvelynn, [[spoiler:eventually changes her mind once she truly realizes how bad she's being treated.]]
* HatesBeingTouched: Honey is averse to physical contact, such as hugs.
* HatesTheirParent: Edits admits to not being sad when his abusive father died. He then quickly puts an end to the subject.
* HeelRealization: In E20, while Egor ''does'' murder with Eliza, he's not aware of how dark it really is. He merely just sees it as a way to do something fun with someone he likes, and he doesn't know that death is permanent -- he assumes people come back to life after a few days, since he witnessed Kyle be in a coma and come out fine later. Once he learns what he's done, he runs into his room crying, and tries to kill ''himself'' to atone for it. ASK interrupts and tells him that he'll always love his son, no matter what.
* HiMom: When Eliza is on a live Butt Buddies interview, she ends her spiel towards a camera with a wave and "And if you're watching, Kyle, hiiii!" Making this funnier is that Kyle is aro-ace, so there's no chance he would even be watching it.
* HiddenFirstActParallel: In E24, Eliza meets Honey over reading ''Literature/SenseAndSensibility''. She compares that of the two characters in the book, one is more unrestrained and impulsive, while the other is stoic and more under control. This exactly sums up the dynamic Eliza and Honey have throughout the episode.
* HilariousInFlashback:
** As shown in E18, when Edits was employed at the Sunshine Cone Ice Cream Parlor, he was completely miserable. He tells ASK that he doesn't like to discuss his work over dinner. Edits would later wind up being a {{Workaholic}} whose job is one of his few interests.
** At the end of E24's flashback, Eliza comments that she can't really see herself getting into a boy as much as she did with Honey. In the present day, she's in a relationship with a man.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: In college, Eliza is convinced that Honey (a heavyset, depressed woman with absolutely no interest in her) is her OneTrueLove and becomes a blushing, stammering mess when trying to approach her.
* {{Househusband}}: Mrs. Lilly's husband, Lance, stays at home and does the cooking and cleaning while she manages a squad of homicide detectives. Eliza loves the idea of this.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** For a while, 9/17 repeatedly claims that people won't stop bugging him about his dead roommate. Nobody actually cares, and he's the only one who ever brings it up.
** Icelynn bullies Marvelynn for not having any friends, but when Marvelynn does find someone she likes, Icelynn finds superficial reasons to hate them and doesn't let her hang out with them.
** In "[=LouisLynn=]", Icelynn bitterly comments that Louis "starts fights with strangers he meets at the airport terminal". Louis only escalated the fight, and Icelynn started it in the first place.
** Throughout "Malpractice Makes Perfect", Mavnol ends up helping Louis get on his show just because he thinks it's funny, and to rub it into Doctor Patrick's face. But when Louis ends up overtaking Mavnol in popularity, Mavnol keeps complaining about how Louis isn't funny and shouldn't be on the show at all.
* IRememberBecause: In E25, Mrs. Lilly is actually familiar with who Lydia Grace is. She saw a newspaper article on Lydia's death and remembered it because of how tragic and unexpected the drowning of a six year old girl was.
* IResembleThatRemark: In "[=LouisLynn=]", it's shown that Icelynn has a book of all-purpose comebacks that she's working of memorizing in case anyone argues with her. When Louis turns down being friends with Icelynn because of how pathetic that is, Icelynn's response is "[[LameComeback Oh, yeah? Well... were you born this stupid or did you take lessons?]]"
* IconicItem: Marvelynn always wears purple-rimmed sunglasses with pink lenses.
* IdentityConcealmentDisposal: At the start of E24, we hear a few conversations about Honey and see a flashback in which she doesn't speak and her face isn't shown to the audience. When Eliza does meet Honey, she finally turns around and reveals her face, then talks normally.
* ImpliedDeathThreat: In E25, after Eliza gets her money back from the fake Lydia, she still sees her crimes as [[ThisIsUnforgivable unforgivable]]. When Lydia calls her out for her cowardice in not going through with hurting her (which it seemed like she would do), Eliza cheerfully responds, "Oh, who says I won't?" She thanks Lydia's roommate for giving her the money, then tells Lydia to sleep with one eye open before leaving.
* InLoveWithLove: In E24, Eliza's roommates Grant and Helen disapprove of her relationship with Honey. They suggest that Eliza might just want to be in a relationship with ''anyone'', and call her out for choosing Honey of all people. Eliza's opposed to this idea, and repeatedly insists that Honey is her OneTrueLove.
* InSeriesNickname: Marvelynn goes by Marv for short.
* InconvenientAttraction: In E26, Eliza's FirstLove Honey comes back. While Eliza fully admits that it was her own fault they broke up, she still finds Honey cute. It embarrasses her because she already ''does'' have a boyfriend, and she's so scared of messing things up again that she actively avoids Honey.
* InsaneTrollLogic: In "[=LouisLynn=]", Icelynn takes Louis to an all-vegan restaurant, which he hates. He asks how she knew he wouldn't like it. Icelynn's answer: "Simple. You're an asshole, so you eat meat." Even Louis can tell that reasoning makes no sense.
* InstantlyProvenWrong:
** In "Eliza's Incredibly Sisterly Love!", after Eliza assures the waiter that her sister is "healthy and happy as can be", Lydia promptly projectile vomits her organs all over the table.
** In "[=LouisLynn=]", Marvelynn tells Louis that while Icelynn is abusive, she does it out of love. Icelynn grabs the phone and gives her an ImpliedDeathThreat because [[DisproportionateRetribution she admitted that Icelynn doesn't have any friends]].
* InterclassFriendship: Eliza, who is poor and lives in a crappy house, gets along well with her very well-off BenevolentBoss Mrs. Lilly. She's also friends with Marvelynn, whose family is rich.
* IronicEpisodeTitle:
** "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!". Yes, Eliza does love her sister -- but said sister has been dead for over 20 years, and is revived as a [[BodyHorror gruesomely decaying zombie]], leading to an extremely UnnervinglyHeartwarming experience.
** "SUPER NORMAL" is ''not'' normal at all, being a much DenserAndWackier take on the show.
* IronicName:
** Sunflowertavia Honey isn't exactly the type of name you'd expect a mortician to have.
** Icelynn's last name, D'Myracle, makes it possible to read her name as "Icelynn the miracle". She is actually a [[{{Jerkass}} very cruel]] person who [[BigSisterBully abuses her younger sister]].
* IrrationalHatred:
** Icelynn hates just about everyone, but especially Eliza and Edits, whom she repeatedly calls sluts. This doesn't have any grounding, since both of them are faithful and trusting partners. It's basically implied that she just doesn't like seeing anyone happy.
** Marvelynn talks a ''lot'', but is generally a positive and likeable person who's done plenty of interesting things she loves to share. Icelynn is a [[BigSisterBully abusive sister]] to the point of [[NoodleIncident having attempted to push her into traffic]] and outright hoping for Marvelynn's death.
** Louis has a constant hatred of Edits, despite the fact that Edits barely even interacts with him and hasn't done anything wrong.
* ItsPersonal: In E25, Eliza gets so mad over her parents being scammed out of their money that she goes to target the scammer directly. Notably, she turns down the help of Mrs. Lilly and Edits -- she wants to get the money back entirely herself.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold:
** 9/17 is usually rude and sarcastic, but in E22 and E23, he genuinely wants to help Kyle process his emotions and even does tasks for him when Kyle can't leave his room.
** Eliza's roommate, Spence, is mostly apathetic or dismissive of her activities. But in E23, when she explains the trouble she's in, he's emotionally moved enough to lend Eliza the use of his phone so she can call Edits, who's in the hospital.
* JerkassHasAPoint: In "[=LouisLynn=]", while he's no better than her and spends the entire trip also mocking her, Louis has some valid points about Icelynn's treatment of Marvelynn. He brings up that Marvelynn isn't even doing anything wrong, and Icelynn seems to make it her entire personality to just bash on her. [[IResembleThatRemark Icelynn's reaction only confirms this.]]
* KickTheDog: In "[=LouisLynn=]", not only is Icelynn generally awful to Marvelynn, she also steals her fanfiction journal to use it as toilet paper.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: In "Malpractice Makes Perfect", Louis declares himself a great doctor. This is despite his scrubs just being a cheap Halloween costume, he doesn't know how to pronounce "clinic", he doesn't believe that people can die of blood loss, and all of his treatments are either staged or nonsense.
* LameComeback: In "[=LouisLynn=]", Icelynn has a bunch of comebacks prepared in case people insult her. They turn out to be incredibly lame, consisting of things like "you're so full of shit, the toilet’s jealous" and "were you born this stupid or did you take lessons?" Louis just laughs them off.
* LastDisrespects: When Edits is presumed dead in E23, Albert hosts his funeral. He forgets Edits' last name, while Louis, Mavnol, and Doctor Patrick head off to party. Kyle calls out Albert for this.
* LastNameBasis:
** Sunflowertavia Honey mainly goes by Honey, due to her dislike of her first name.
** Margaret Lilly is referred to by most characters as "Mrs. Lilly", even outside of work. The only exceptions are her fellow supervisors and her husband.
** Throughout "[=LouisLynn=]", Louis and Icelynn refer to each other as "Tetrault" and "D'Myracle". They're not friends, so they don't want to use first names.
* LastSecondWordSwap: In "Eliza's Extremely Lesbian Adventures!", Eliza starts calling out Grant with "f...", then finishes it with "forget you!" She ''does'' tell him "fuck you" for real after she hears Honey say it.
* LatinIsMagic: Edits recites a Latin spell to bring Lydia back to life. It roughly translates to a demand for his girlfriend's sister to be reborn.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall:
** "SUPER NORMAL" is self-aware about being a {{Flanderization}} of the show and its characters.
** "Malpractice Makes Perfect" addresses Doctor Patrick being OutOfFocus, and his status as a BackAlleyDoctor. In the time he's been gone, he has undergone genuine CharacterDevelopment and wants to be seen as legitimate, but everyone except Albert is so used to just him being the "bad doctor" of the complex that his business is suffering.
* LethalChef:
** Eliza is a terrible cook; in college, her attempt to [[ThroughHisStomach cook for her girlfriend]] results in a stove fire. In the present day, she rarely tries to cook stuff herself, mostly living on cheap PovertyFood.
** Edits, too. His attempt at making cookies comes out overcooked and awful, prompting him to throw them all out. His salad is merely [[DamnedByFaintPraise just "not bad" but not good, either]].
* Letters2Numbers: According to E23, Eliza's phone password is 3-7-1-2-4; her name spelled out in numbers.
* LGBTRepresentationInMedia: Eliza is bisexual, and Kyle is aro-ace. In E24, it's revealed that Eliza had a relationship with a lesbian girl named Honey back in college. Parker and Gwen, introduced in E27, are a lesbian couple.
* LookBothWays: Zombie Lydia meets her unfortunate end right after making amends with Eliza to be more independent. As she's walking away from the house -- the first time she's ''ever'' been away from Eliza -- she goes into the street and is hit by a car, her body being scattered on the pavement.
* LoveEpiphany: In E24, Eliza tells Honey that since she doesn't have a lot of friends, she values the time they spend together. Then she comes to realize how much she likes Honey as a person -- and finally realizes, and confesses, that she's in love.
* LowerDeckEpisode: "Malpractice Makes Perfect" revolves around Doctor Patrick, a minor character who had largely been OutOfFocus until then.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: According to Eliza in E21, Edits once went an entire day with a knife impaled in his stomach because he didn't think it was enough of a big deal to let anyone know. Eliza noticed and got him help, potentially saving his life.
* {{Malaproper}}: In "SUPER NORMAL", Eliza shouts out, "Whether or not, here I come!"
* MaliciousMisnaming: In E25, the fake Lydia refers to Eliza as "Ethyl" by mistake. Later on, she does the same thing -- but to illustrate that she doesn't care about Eliza or her family, and just sees them as targets that she can get money from.
* MeanBoss: Honey's boss, Melena, is shown to only care about milking profits out of grieving customers and pushes Honey into selling overpriced funeral goods.
* MeaningfulEcho: When Eliza's laughing over Honey's EmbarrassingFirstName, Honey tells her to "shut her goddamn mouth". After Eliza gets with Honey, Grant is about to ask what she was doing, but she happily tells him to "shut his [[GoshDangItToHeck gosh-darn]] mouth!"
* MeaningfulName:
** Marvelynn, who is amazed by ''everything''.
** The Tagetes family, with that being the scientific name of marigold flowers. Most of them are gardeners or environmental activists.
** Melena, a [[MeanBoss toxic piece of shit]] who is also named after a toxic piece of shit. Her surname, Steator, comes from steatorrhea, a type of poop with too much fat in it (fitting her [[FatBastard appearance]]).
* MeetTheInLaws: In E25, Eliza invites Edits over to meet her parents for the first time. Edits gets along with them pretty well, and they approve of the relationship. The main conflict comes from Eliza's RepressedMemories of her dead sister coming back up during the conversations.
* MegaMealChallenge: Eliza had aspired to complete a SelfImposedChallenge involving eating at all eighteen stations in her college's food hall, in one sitting. When she's with Honey, she's convinced that ThePowerOfLove will get her through it, in addition to heavy exercise and not eating for 18 hours beforehand so she's hungry enough. Eliza does actually manage to eat it all, but she winds up vomiting it up after.
* MetaTwist: Edits and Eliza tend to handle all of their problems together, be they solving crimes or working out their interpersonal relationships. In "ELIZA'S GUIDE TO FAKING YOUR DEATH", Eliza learns that a [[ConMan con woman]] has been scamming her parents out of their money, reminding them of their daughter's death and requesting money to get her soul into Heaven. Eliza takes this offense [[ItsPersonal personally]] and actually ''declines'' Edits' help because she wants to get the money back by herself -- and it works.
* TheMissusAndTheEx: In E26, Eliza invites Edits to meet her ex, Honey. Interestingly enough, Edits and Honey get along just fine. Eliza has the hardest time; she gets cold feet and tries to back out, and she can't think of anything to say that doesn't make it more awkward. She has to excuse herself from the table after just a few minutes. When she wants to wrap everything up, she tries to pick up the check, but can't afford it and has to ask Edits to do it instead. The entire experience leaves Eliza so mortified of what Honey probably thinks of her that she starts actively avoiding her.
* MoodWhiplash:
** In "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!", Eliza and Lydia come to an agreement for Eliza to stop being so protective of Lydia and really let her live her own life. Lydia hugs Eliza, who stands outside to watch Lydia go out into the world. Before she can even cross the street, she is promptly hit by a car and dies.
** Kyle and Edits' dramatic conversation in E22 is immediately followed by a cut to Eliza dancing around in her room and singing "Strawberry Chainsaw".
* MortonsFork: Doctor Patrick ends up in a moral dilemma when he takes a shady call in "Malpractice Makes Perfect". A squad of fratboys have stolen anesthesia and want him to administer it. Doctor Patrick refuses to go along with it because he's not licensed to give out anesthesia... but he realizes that just leaving them to their reckless behavior might be worse.
* MovingBeyondBereavement: In E25, Eliza copes with the realization that her sister really ''is'' dead, after she had hoped she would turn out to be alive sometime down the line. In the end, what helps her is a bit of prayer, and the reassurance that since her sister was a genuinely good person, she's probably in Heaven. She then holds a thoughtful event in her sister's honor to keep her memory alive and raise money for her parents.
* MrViceGuy: Honey is an [[TheAlcoholic chronic alcoholic]] who drinks multiple times a day. Despite this, she has a HiddenHeartOfGold and is quite sweet to her friends.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: In E24, Eliza laughs at Honey's EmbarrassingFirstName. She doesn't think much about it, but it's a TraumaButton for Honey since she's been bullied about it before. Eliza wants to walk Honey home, but she coldly turns her down. This makes Eliza realize just how hurtful her actions were, and she gives Honey a HeartfeltApology the next day.
* MyParentsAreDead: In E25, Eliza's father tells Edits the story of where her name came from. She asks the same question to Edits later.
-->'''Edits''': I don't remember.\
'''Eliza''': You should call up ''your'' dad and ask him!\
'''Edits''': I can't, Eliza.\
'''Eliza''': Why not? Doesn't he know?\
'''Edits''': ''He's dead.''
* NamesToTrustImmediately:
** Eliza Grace. Grace is a virtuous Christian concept, befitting her forgiving and caring nature.
** There's also Eliza's mother, Valerie Grace, an OpenMindedParent who is supportive of Eliza's career and relationship.
** Zigzagged with Sunflowertavia Honey. Honey is a mortician who seemingly couldn't care less about people, but actually has a HiddenHeartOfGold.
* NervousWreck: Cindy, who spends much of her debut episode in a state of panic because she can't handle the emotional toll her job puts on her. Only hanging out with Kyle calms her down.
* NeverFoundTheBody: Eliza thinks that her sister could still be alive because she never physically saw her body, and her parents didn't tell her about it. Their family did hold a funeral, but the coffin was empty. In the end, Mrs. Lilly is able to prove through a newspaper record that Lydia's body ''was'' found and photographed, confirming her death.
* NeverLiveItDown: The only reason Honey remembers Eliza is because Eliza almost threw up on her. Eliza ends up bringing this up a few times, since she's still really embarrassed by it.
* NeverMyFault: Icelynn's takeaway from her travels in "[=LouisLynn=]": "Everyone these days is an asshole." ''She'' was the one who [[TheBet bet]] a random stranger that they travel together and try to make each other as miserable as possible.
* NeverTrustATitle:
** Despite the title of "ELIZA'S GUIDE TO FAKING YOUR DEATH", Eliza does not fake her death at any point. Rather, she suspects that her sister's death was faked, only for it to turn out to be real.
** "SUPER NORMAL" is [[BizarroEpisode as far from a normal episode as possible]]. The [[{{Portmantitle}} title]] comes from the words "supernatural" and "paranormal".
* NiceToTheWaiter: In E25, Edits and Eliza run into a fake Lydia who's suspected to be Eliza's dead sister. One of the things that tips Eliza off to the truth is that this Lydia acts ''incredibly'' rude to the waiter at a restaurant, demanding food ridiculously fast and quietly whispering "I hope you die" after they leave.
* NoFullNameGiven:
** The two hosts of the Butt Buddies, Stephen and Evelyn, are not given last names.
** Tess is not given a last name in either of her appearances.
** We don't know what Lance's last name was before he got married and it changed to Lilly.
* NoYouHangUpFirst: In E22, Eliza tries to start a "you hang up first" routine with Edits. Edits doesn't quite understand it and just hangs up, confused.
* NonProtagonistResolver: Throughout the E22/E23 arc, ASK is a supporting character who tries to aid the characters and survive on his own. But towards the end of E23, he realizes that Kyle has been left [[DespairEventHorizon completely broken by the experience]] and outright [[StoppedCaring stopped caring about trying to get Edits back]]. Not helping is when Eliza calls him and pours her heart out about [[StepfordSmiler how hard it's been for her to act cheerful for Edits in the face of this]]. ASK and Egor decide to talk to Albert themselves; while Kyle was reactionary and ran in with a WeaponForIntimidation, ASK calmly talks through Albert's claims and makes him realize he's been doing way more harm than he intended.
* NoodleIncident:
** Albert once went into room 1B in the complex and met the people there, who were making... something big that smelled great, but most of his recount is drowned out by Louis and 9/17.
** In "[=LouisLynn=]", when Louis snarks that Marvelynn should be thrown into traffic, Icelynn answers, "[[BlackComedy Believe me, I've tried.]]"
* NoodleImplements: In E21, Edits and Eliza look through a book of presumably dirty sex acts. We don't see the exact details, but Edits is overheard asking "how big does the jar have to be?" and "...is that ''chocolate''?"
* NotAfraidToDie:
** Edits is completely desensitized to his death. It's mentioned that the only things keeping him alive are his girlfriend and his [[{{Workaholic}} job]]; if it weren't for those, he'd probably just die right there and then. Edits has also pre-planned his funeral and already has a grave dug for him, for no reasons other than early preparation and boredom. He also keeps a gun under his bed in the event that he ''does'' ever have to commit suicide (but he also has ways to talk himself out of it).
** In E24, Eliza says that she's come to terms with the fact that she will die. She feels like she'll have had such a fulfilling life by then (and already does so far) that she'll be able to die happy.
* NotHelpingYourCase:
** In "Malpractice Makes Perfect", Mavnol's attempts to sabotage Doctor Patrick end up with Louis overtaking ''The Mavnol Variety Hour'', and Doctor Patrick is now the only person who can help him get it back. Doctor Patrick isn't sold on the idea, pointing out that Mavnol only put Louis on the show so he could feel like he was a better doctor. Mavnol defends himself by saying that he didn't care about Louis's feelings, he just wanted to get back at Doctor Patrick.
** In "[=LouisLynn=]", Louis calls out Icelynn for her IrrationalHatred of her sister, pointing out that she seems to dedicate all her time to complaining about her even when she's not there. Icelynn decides that Louis needs to understand just what it's like to be with Marvelynn and imitates her, therefore proving his point.
* NotSoAboveItAll: In "Eliza's Extremely Lesbian Adventures!", we see Eliza, Mrs. Lilly, Cindy, and Alice gather together at a private party at Alice's apartment. During a game of truth or dare, Mrs. Lilly teams up with Eliza to play a harmless prank on her husband. Similarly, both of them aren't above joking about how terrible of a person Icelynn is.
* NotSoStoic: While Edits is mainly TheStoic, he has a few notable displays of emotion. He's outright horrified by Lydia in "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!", he gets momentarily offended by an outburst Eliza makes in E19, and he's genuinely uncomfortable with reminding Eliza of her RepressedMemories in E25.
* ObliviousToLove: Subverted with Edits. In E15, Eliza's trying to find the best way to confess to Edits that she's in love with him. It turns out that her behavior is so blatant that even Edits actually did pick up on it; he just assumed she already knew and didn't say anything.
* ObviouslyNotFine: In "SUPER NORMAL", Eliza has a habit of singing "''[[Music/{{Qbomb}} Everything is fine, everything is fine!]]''" in dangerous or stressful situations.
* OfficeRomance: Edits and Eliza are co-workers who are dating. Their boss approves of their relationship because it improves their performance. One line that Edits and Eliza won't cross is sex; they think it'd make it awkward, and they feel like their relationship is complete without it.
* OhWaitThisIsMyGroceryList: In "SUPER NORMAL", Edits reads off his mission statement: "I stand for the ideals of... ''(takes out paper)'' bread, cheese, salmon, and skim milk!" Later on, when Eliza list things she's scared of, she reads "baking soda, ice cream, bagels, spaghetti..." However, [[SubvertedTrope that was intentional]]. She ''is'' scared of those things.
* OnlineAlias: Eliza's social media handle is [=LizzyG93=], derived from her parents' AffectionateNickname for her, her last initial, and her year of birth (1993).
* OnlyFriend: Honey doesn't get along with her coworkers or boss, and has a limited social circle. For years, her only friend seemed to be Tess, her college roommate who acts as her conscience and guides her when she's not doing well.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** In "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!", we can immediately tell something's wrong when Eliza is crying with her head on her desk. Even Edits' entrance doesn't really cheer her up. It turns out she's sad because she misses her dead sister.
** Also in "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!", the usually [[TheStoic stoic]] and emotionless Edits is outright horrified when Lydia [[CameBackWrong comes back wrong]].
** In E23, Eliza actually tries to cover up that she's out of food and money. This is one of the very few times she hasn't been upfront with him, and it's because Edits has been through so much over the episode that she doesn't want to make him feel worse.
** E23 ends with Edits breaking down and crying, once he realizes that his gun got taken away for good.
** Eliza saying "[[PrecisionFStrike fuck you]]" to Grant in E24. Considering she almost never swears, it says a lot when she actually does drop one.
** Eliza gets a lot of this in E25. She had repressed her painful memories of her sister's death, and when they come up again, she's actually sad during the proceeding investigation. It even gets to the point that she needs to stop talking about it for a bit because it's too much for her to handle. In the second half, when she finds out that someone has been scamming her grieving parents out of their money by claiming that it saves her dead sister's soul, Eliza winds up [[BewareTheNiceOnes getting genuinely angry]] and even threatens her to get the money back.
* OpenMindedParent: The Grace family has mainly consisted of bakers and chefs. When Eliza told her parents she wanted to be a homicide detective instead, her parents were initially surprised, but ultimately let her do it because they felt she could handle it. In the present day, they're happy after seeing how much she enjoys her job. Similarly, in "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict", Eliza reveals that her parents reacted well to her coming out as bisexual, saying that she'd always be a part of the family no matter who she loved.
* OutOfCharacterMoment: Played for laughs in "SUPER NORMAL", where at the very end of the episode, we learn Edits' lifelong dream: to form a farm animal racing team. Eliza gives a BigWhat in response.
* OutOfFocus:
** Edits does not appear in "Eliza's Extremely Lesbian Adventures!", "Malpractice Makes Perfect", "A Conventional Story", "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict", or "[=LouisLynn=]".
** Eliza is absent from "Malpractice Makes Perfect" and "[=LouisLynn=]". She also only has a brief role in "Mrs. Lilly's Corporate Clash!"
* PetTheDog: While Edits and Kyle's relationship is complicated and leads the two to not feel any real connection, there are a few moments of Edits directly standing up for Kyle.
** In E16, it's shown that Edits prepares food for Kyle to eat while he's at work. They also have a conversation over breakfast, and while it's not immediately obvious, his conversations with Eliza later makes it clear that he actually was paying attention.
** In E19, Edits confronts Cindy for trying to date Kyle and pushing him into a relationship he doesn't want (because he's asexual).
** While non-canon, E20 has Edits reassure Kyle that he'll be safe from the murderer and give him a way to defend himself.
** In E26, Edits lets Kyle try one of the cookies he was planning to give to Honey. It turns out he's a LethalChef, but he was genuinely trying to be nice.
* ThePollyanna:
** Eliza is a sweet, optimistic girl who manages to see the good in everyone.
** Marvelynn can find excitement in anything, travels the world in search of fun new things to do, and rationalizes her sister's abuse because she doesn't think anyone can genuinely be that awful.
* {{Portmantitle}}:
** "SUPER NORMAL" combines "supernatural" and "paranormal", also making it an IronicEpisodeTitle.
** "[=LouisLynn=]" is a combination of Louis's name, and either Icelynn's or Marvelynn's.
* PositiveFriendInfluence:
** Ever since he got with Eliza, Edits has become more understanding and better at processing his emotions. Eliza never gets mad at him and helps him peacefully work out his conflicts.
** When Edits is friends with Honey, he's not only happier, but willing to spend time with someone outside of work and even tries to cook food to impress her. Honey's actions also make him realize that death isn't something to anticipate; enjoy living life while you have it. Edits says that even though he was only friends with Honey for a week, she made him a better person.
** Eliza befriends Marvelynn, and this goes both ways. Eliza, who lost her sister when she was young, likes feeling like a CoolBigSister again and learning from Marvelynn's unconventional worldview. Marvelynn, who has an [[BigSisterBully abusive sister]], realizes her self-worth and gets to stand up to her, while introducing Eliza to some of her own hobbies.
* PovertyFood: Eliza's meals are rarely more complex than cheap foods like macaroni and cheese, reheated microwave pizza, and crackers.
* ThePowerOfLove: In E24, Eliza feels that Honey brings out the best in her after they get together. What starts this is Eliza getting a perfect grade on an essay, but as Grant points out, it's mainly because she spent extra time studying just to be with Honey rather than merely just being in love. Similarly, Eliza pushes herself in athletics and accomplishes something she'd always wanted to do (eating at every station in the food hall), but these are more brought on by her heightened sense of self-confidence and desire to impress her. Honey herself barely even does anything for the latter two.
* PunnyName: Melena's name is a pun on Melina, an actual name, and melena, a medical term for diseased feces (befitting her appearance and personality).
* PrecisionFStrike:
** In E22, Kyle -- who rarely swears -- snaps and calls Edits an asshole after he [[TraumaButton makes an offhand remark about suicide]].
** Eliza drops her first and only F-bomb in E24, when Honey and Tess are telling Grant [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech how much he sucks]]. When Honey says "...seriously, fuck you," Eliza enthusiastically repeats it.
** In E26, Honey drops another F-bomb. When Edits reveals his plans to commit suicide, Honey stands up, slams the table, and says "FUCK OFF." Twice. And later tells him to eat shit.
** In E26, after Edits hears about Honey's backstory, he says that he fucked up.
* RageBreakingPoint:
** Eliza is barely tolerant of Icelynn's verbal abuse, but finally snaps and kills Icelynn when she insults her boyfriend.
** In E22, all of Kyle's repressed frustration finally comes to light and he's forced to confront it. Once he's reminded of Edits' planned suicide, he snaps and calls Edits an asshole, then he says that he hates who everyone has become due to the storm forcing them all together.
** In E22, Edits suffers from being deprived of being able to go to work, and his inability to spend time with Eliza, which makes him feel like he has no control over his life. Thus, he spends a lot of time considering the gun he keeps under his bed in case he wants to commit suicide. When Kyle, wanting to save Edits' life, steals the gun from him, Edits is ''outright furious'' and chases him down, [[ImpliedDeathThreat threatening to rip out his throat]].
* RaisedByGrandparents: Marigold and Autumn's parents are environmental activists who spend most of their time on the road to spread their message. Thus, the kids live in the permanent care of their maternal grandparents, Flore and Fiorenzo.
* RandomlyReversedLetters: When Icelynn is seen as a kid during a flashback in "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict", her "Lil' Brat" hat is written in crayon in all lowercase, except the R, which is uppercase and backwards.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:
** In E22, Kyle becomes so frustrated with Edits constantly ignoring him that he tries to talk out the problem with Eliza and 9/17 to get his thoughts organized. Finally, he goes up to Edits and calls him out for ignoring him, never paying attention to the nice gestures he's done, and not even trying to make time for him.
** In E25, [[BewareTheNiceOnes Eliza]] confronts the fake Lydia who's been scamming her parents for years, and before that, made Eliza believe that [[SurvivorGuilt it was her fault that her sister died]]. When Eliza finally goes to confront her, she calls her "morally bankrupt", "irredeemable", and states that she'll never get into Heaven.
* ReestablishingCharacterMoment: Ten years before the events of the "The Sweetest Sauce", Eliza and Honey broke up with each other. The episode starts by showing Honey as a mortician, reading an incredibly depressing funeral speech while repressing that it makes her somewhat uncomfortable. We can tell that even though Honey's job is important, she's been worn down by it over the years and has personal troubles she hasn't processed.
* RelationshipUpgrade: In E15, Edits and Eliza go from being friends to a OfficialCouple.
* RepressedMemories: Eliza has painful, repressed memories of her sister's death. What finally digs them back up for her is revisiting her childhood bedroom and finding old keepsakes of her with Lydia. This puts an emotional toll on her throughout the episode until she can come to terms with it.
* TheReveal: Zigzagged. In E25, Eliza asks Edits where his first name came from. He says that he doesn't remember... and this leads into a major reveal that his father is dead.
* RoadTripPlot: In "[=LouisLynn=]", Icelynn and Louis meet up at an airport. He's trying to go to a gaming convention, she just wants to get away from her sister. But when Louis ends up getting Icelynn to pay for his expensive plane ticket, she's ''not'' letting him get away with it. They make a bet where whoever makes the other suffer more on the trip wins, and the loser pays for both tickets. They spend the entire trip doing activities that they know the other will hate.
* RobotBuddy: Egor is the main user of a nonsentient AI named Risi, which helps him cook, tells him stories, and gives him someone to talk to. It mainly takes the form of a program on ASK's laptop.
* RunningGag: Icelynn has no problem with talking shit about other people, but when anyone stands up to her, she pretty much falls apart and is reduced to using a LameComeback that she memorized out of a book.
* RunningGagged:
** Multiple times throughout the series, Edits implies that his job is the ''only'' things keeping him alive, and he'd kill himself if he didn't have either. He keeps a gun under his bed for this purpose and already has his own grave picked out. While sometimes PlayedForDrama, it mainly serves as a joke about how much of a {{Workaholic}} Edits is. At the end of season 1, in "The Sweetest Sauce", Honey calls out Edits for this mindset -- not only because she lost her own partner due to suicide, but she would give anything to have a life like his and finds it petty that he'd be willing to kill himself like that. At the end of the episode, Edits agrees and buries his gun in the grave he had reserved for his own body.
** Throughout season 2, Marvelynn is repeatedly bullied by her older sister, Icelynn. It's mostly PlayedForLaughs because Marvelynn is [[ThePollyanna too optimistic]] to realize her sister doesn't like her. In "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict", Marvelynn finally realizes what's going on and stands up for herself, with Eliza's help.
* SadisticGameShow: Mavnol runs a bizarre variety show, with one challenge being locking an audience member in a room full of bees.
* SatelliteCharacter:
** Alice is mainly seen with Eliza, as a close friend for her to talk to. We learn a bit about her life in E21, but her roles do mostly involve Eliza.
** Spence's roles all involve being Eliza's roommate, and he is never seen interacting with anyone else.
** Tess is defined by her closeness to Honey, acting as her voice and communicating her ideas in more detail.
* SeasonFinale: "The Sweetest Sauce" concludes the first season. Eliza's past and present come together when her FirstLove, Honey, comes back and meets her SecondLove, Edits. They get along surprisingly well, but Eliza is so embarrassed by what Honey thinks of her that she refuses to see her. At the end of the episode, Edits and Honey are friends, he's [[RunningGagged stopped having suicidal thoughts]], and he's looking to improve his cooking presumably as a way to get closer to Eliza.
* SecondLove: Edits is Eliza's second partner. Her FirstLove was a girl named Honey she met in college, but Eliza's overbearing nature led Honey to break up with her. Eliza thankfully has a much more stable relationship with Edits, partly because she's learned from her previous one.
* SecretStabWound: Edits once went an entire day with a knife stuck in his stomach, trying to hide it and continue with his work because he didn't want to bother anyone about it. Eliza noticed and helped him.
* SelfDeprecation: In E18, when Kyle's recapping what's happened to him since he moved into the complex, he briefly summarizes some of the show's earlier episodes. Mavnol responds that they don't sound like very interesting stories.
* SelfProclaimedLoveInterest: Eliza introduces herself to Tess as "Honey's OneTrueLove!" Honey has absolutely no romantic interest in Eliza, and Tess bluntly responds "...does [Honey] ''know"''?"
* SeriousWorkComedicScene: E22 is a ''very'' dark episode that tests Edits and Kyle's limits and focuses entirely on the complex members. However, Eliza gets one or two scenes -- she's completely unaware of what Edits is going through and just sings and dances to "Strawberry Chainsaw" in her room.
* SequelEpisode:
** "Eliza's Extremely Lesbian Adventures!" introduces Eliza's FirstLove, Honey. Honey comes back in the SeasonFinale, "The Sweetest Sauce", as a major character.
** At the end of "Not Always Romantic", Cindy decides that being a homicide detective is too tough for her and is moved into a squad of evidence lawyers instead. Next season, "A Conventional Story" explores how this goes for her.
* {{Sequelitis}}: In-universe. Mrs. Lilly and Lance only like the original episodes of ''Butt Buddies'', when it was Emmett and Evelyn hosting. She hates the Stephen episodes because he's incredibly mean and not really helpful.
* SexualEuphemism: In E21, Eliza is trying to talk about her sexual frustration by telling ASK that she's looking for a way to "have fun in bed" with Edits. Egor overhears and innocently suggests that they build a pillow fort. However, Eliza actually becomes ''more'' interested in this idea than anything about sex, and indeed, they do make one at the end of the episode.
* SharedFamilyQuirks: In E25, it's implied that much of the Grace family is either an excellent chef or otherwise made impressive strides in the fields of baking or cooking. The only exception is Eliza, a LethalChef.
* ShipperOnDeck: Mrs. Lilly is incredibly supportive of Eliza and Edits' relationship. She thinks it's adorable. Interestingly, the relationship started because of her influence; she told Edits that he needed to be nicer to Eliza after she was hired, and this led Eliza to eventually fall in love with him.
* ShooOutTheClowns: While Eliza has a major role in the first part of E26, she gets less important as the episode goes on. Mainly, it's because of the sudden reveal of Honey's trauma, and Edits' reaction to it. Once Eliza realizes how serious Edits' problem is, she stops making jokes and focuses more on being serious and supportive.
* ShoutOut: Eliza has a sister named Lydia who died from drowning, much like the protagonist of ''Literature/EverythingINeverToldYou''.
* ShoutOutThemeNaming: Eliza's college roommates are named Helen and Grant, the same as the protagonists of ''VideoGame/BestOfThree''.
* SiblingYinYang: Both of the D'Myracle sisters have completely different outlooks on the world. Marvelynn loves engaging in her creative hobbies and believes that everyone is good at heart, while Icelynn spends most of her time complaining about others, often for petty or hypocritical reasons.
* SignatureHeadgear:
** Flore is always seen wearing a green hat with a flower on it.
** Marvelynn always wears a blue sun hat.
** Icelynn has a hat that says "Lil Brat" on it.
* SignificantNameOverlap: There are two Lydia Graces in "ELIZA'S GUIDE TO FAKING YOUR DEATH". One is Eliza's dead little sister, and the other is a heartless [[ConMan con artist]] who takes advantage of this fact to scam money from Eliza's parents.
* SitcomArchNemesis:
** 9/17 and Louis spend a lot of their time arguing and having petty fights. In E22, after 9/17 critiques his choice of energy drink, Louis throws a can of it at him. 9/17 suggests they do a truce to steal food from ASK, but he quickly reveals himself as a traitor and tries to keep it for himself.
** Louis has an IrrationalHatred for Edits. Edits doesn't particularly care and prefers to avoid confrontation.
* SmashCut:
** In E24, Eliza prepares to make dinner for Honey. We immediately see her crying on the floor as a burning mess is in the pan, as she calls for her roommate to get the fire extinguisher.
** In E26, after Kyle tastes one of his cookies and his disgusted, Edits says that they "can't be that bad" and tries one himself. As soon as he puts it in his mouth, we see the entire tray of cookies in the trash.
* SomethingWeForgot: After Icelynn returns home from her trip in "[=LouisLynn=]", Marvelynn asks her what happened to the guy she was traveling with. We cut back to see Louis still stuck in Stuttgart, unable to buy a plane ticket back home because [[KickTheDog Icelynn stole his wallet]].
* SpreeKiller: In E20, Eliza and Egor gain a {{bloodlust}} and kill no less than ''five'' people just for the fun of it.
* StoicWoobie:[[invoked]] Honey. She's stuck in a job she hates, has very few friends, and is implied to have been bullied in the past. Her two previous relationships didn't work out; her first ex is now successful and her second girlfriend was DrivenToSuicide. Edits actually learns a lot from Honey and realizes that if she wants to keep living in spite of all this, then he can, too.
* StrawVegetarian: Icelynn is a vegetarian who uses that as an excuse to hate on others who aren't.
* SuddenDownerEnding:
** By the end of "Malpractice Makes Perfect", Doctor Patrick is no closer to getting a real job, and Mavnol and Louis have teamed up once again to destroy his car as revenge.
** "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict" has Marvelynn denouncing Icelynn, and Eliza taking her place as Marvelynn's sister. The two of them have fun working on Marvelynn's idea for a show. At the end of the episode, they arrive at Marvelynn's house to find that Icelynn had ''burnt everything'' they were working on, irreversibly erasing decades of Marvelynn's work and sending her into a [[HeroicBSOD temporary depression]].
* SugaryMalice: In E22-E23, Albert takes extreme measures to target Kyle and take his stuff, prevent him from getting food, and cuts his electricity. He repeatedly states that he's doing it for the good of the complex and tries to guilt trip him with that, but it's clearly due to their personal feud. What finally makes him stop is the realization that he's actually caused way more harm than good, and he's even dragged in people he didn't intend to hurt.
* SupremeChef:
** Egor is shown to be a really good cook. However, since he's only nine years old, it's implied that ASK actually does most of the work and lets Egor take credit for it.
** Honey has been practicing cooking for years, makes delicious meals, and has a book of recipes she's come up with herself.
* SurprisinglyHappyEnding: In E26, Edits and Honey's friendship suddenly breaks when Honey gets ''really'' mad over his plans to commit suicide. She promptly downs a bunch of wine to forget, blocks his number, and won't even talk to him the next day. Edits goes into an apology, acknowledging that Honey is strong for persisting in the face of her relatively shitty situation, and admitting that he's had a change of heart and demonstrates that he won't kill himself. He's not sure if what he's saying is getting through to her... until she gives him a pat on the back, showing that she ''does'' understand.
* SurvivorGuilt: Eliza was there when Lydia died. She wasn't able to save her, and still blames herself for it.
* TakeOurWordForIt: We don't see the pictures of Lydia's corpse that Mrs. Lilly describes as scarring. Edits does, and merely calls them "unnecessary".
* TalkToTheFist: Eliza laughs uproariously over Honey's EmbarrassingFirstName. A pissed off Honey responds by punching her in the face to shut her up.
* TastesLikeDisdain: Eliza makes an elaborate meal to win Icelynn over. Icelynn, however, is vegetarian and can't eat the meat Eliza prepared. She shrugs off the rest of it as "looking like crap".
* TastesLikeFriendship: Subverted. In E20, Mrs. Lilly suggests that Eliza invite [[{{Jerkass}} Icelynn]] over for dinner so they can be friends. However, Icelynn's [[UngratefulBastard ungratefulness]] and rudeness throughout the meal eventually drives Eliza to murder her.
* TemporarilyExaggeratedTrait: Being a homicide detective, Eliza has no problem with handling dark stuff. In "Not Always Romantic", she is ''completely'' desensitized to murder and even somewhat of a NightmareFetishist, happily taking selfies of herself with corpses. This is done to further contrast her with [[NervousWreck Cindy]], and can be explained by it being one of her first appearances.
* TemptingFate: In E24, Eliza says that she thinks it'd be super awkward if Honey came back, since she's dating Edits. Two episodes later, Eliza meets up with Honey again, and it's just as she feared.
* TerseTalker: Honey tends to speak in short sentences. Most often, it's because she just has no interest in talking to Eliza, but she speaks this way to Tess as well. When she befriends Edits and is telling him about her hobbies and workplace, she starts going into more detail and using longer sentences.
* ThrivingExCrush: In "The Sweetest Sauce", Honey meets up with her ex-girlfriend Eliza again. However, while Honey's life got even worse since then, Eliza is now very happy, in a loving relationship, and has a job she loves.
* ThroughHisStomach:
** On their first date, Mrs. Lilly had dinner with Lance. He made mashed potatoes, which Mrs. Lilly recalls as the best thing she's ever tasted, and fell in love with him even more. He still makes the recipe for her today.
** A non-romantic version, but when Edits meets Honey, she makes him steak with red wine sauce. The last time she cooked this was for her [[spoiler:dead girlfriend, Crystal]], showing that she genuinely sees him as a friend.
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: E26 for Edits. He befriends Eliza's ex, and the two actually enjoy working and spending time together. When Edits' uncaring NotAfraidToDie attitude towards his own life ends up triggering a TraumaButton for Honey, he feels bad and tries to apologize. By losing one of his close friends, he comes to realize that he ''doesn't'' need to just be waiting until he dies, and that he should enjoy living and his friends while he can. When he confesses to Honey that she made him a better person, she gently pats him on the back.
* TookTheWifesName: In E19, Eliza wants to marry Edits and have him take her last name. It's not explicitly stated, but it's likely that she just prefers the traditional "Grace" over the more unusual "Latimore". Eliza's excited when she finds out that Mrs. Lilly has gotten married and ''still'' has her last name. We don't know what her husband's old name was, but Eliza thinks the resulting name of "Lance Lilly" is awesome.
* TorturedMonster: In "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!", Edits brings Eliza's dead sister, Lydia, back to life. When Lydia resurfaces, her skin is torn and disfigured, bones are sticking out of her body, and she can't even stand or speak intelligibly (although Eliza can understand her). When Eliza takes her around town, she starts bleeding out and vomiting up organs. Edits suggests that Lydia was better off staying dead. Lydia agrees, detailing that her body is so messed up that even existing is painful for her. In the end, after Eliza and Lydia come to a mutual agreement, Lydia [[DrivenToSuicide kills herself again by wandering into traffic]].
* ATragedyOfImpulsiveness: E20 mainly revolves around Eliza killing Icelynn on impulse once she insults her and her boyfriend. In the second half of the story, people start catching on to what she did, and she has to hide the evidence to save her job.
* TraumaButton: When Honey hears that Edits keeps a gun in his room in case he plans to commit suicide, she's reminded of her girlfriend, who had unexpectedly done the same. Honey promptly tells Edits to fuck off and storms away, then [[DrowningMySorrows drinks wine in her house to the point of having a hangover]].
* TraumaCongaLine: Kyle is on the receiving end of some of the worst things to happen in the series: he's been hospitalized, mugged, starved, and almost died twice. His relationship with Edits is vague and they're barely even friends. Despite this, he tries to stay positive and lives for the good in the world.
* TrickDialogue: In E26, Eliza is nowhere to be found during an investigation. Honey asks where she is, and before Edits can answer, we cut to Eliza speaking to someone, saying she didn't forget them and they'll always be special to her. Eliza's actually still avoiding Honey; she's talking to [[GraveMarkingScene her sister's grave]].
* TheUnapologetic: The fake Lydia in "ELIZA'S GUIDE TO FAKING HER DEATH". After Eliza's sister died, Lydia had repeatedly shown up to Eliza's parents' house and requested payment, claiming their daughter's soul would go to Hell if they didn't pay her enough. Eliza's parents are so grief-stricken that they pay her a total of nearly a thousand dollars over the years. Eliza is understandably pissed when she learns this, and tries to make Lydia give the money back. Even after hearing about all the emotional pain Eliza went through following her sister's death, Lydia ''refuses'' to give the money back and states that she merely sees Eliza and her family as targets to scam money from. She doesn't even give up the money willingly; her roommate does it because he thinks Lydia is in danger.
* UndeadChild: Six year old Lydia gets revived by Edits in "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!"
* UngratefulBastard: Icelynn repeatedly berates Eliza even when she tries to do nice things for her.
* TheUnintelligible: When Lydia is revived, she's incapable of speech and only makes inhuman mumbling noises. Eliza is the only one who can understand her.
* UnnervinglyHeartwarming: While it's adorable that Eliza is reliving being a CoolBigSis, her sister being a TorturedMonster who's actively decaying makes it horrific.
* TheUnreveal: Even by the end of E21, Edits and Eliza hasn't been able to figure out what happened to Emmett, one of the original Butt Buddies before he was replaced by Stephen.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: While many people are horrified by reanimated Lydia's appearance, Kyle of all people is surprisingly okay with it. He is slightly uncomfortable with Lydia, but considering Edits was visibly afraid and even tried to avoid being near her, it's an unusually understated reaction.
* VillainProtagonist: "[=LouisLynn=]" focuses entirely on Icelynn, a [[{{Hypocrite}} hypocritical]] {{Jerkass}} who [[BigSisterBully abuses her younger sister for no reason]], and Louis, a SmallNameBigEgo wannabe gamer who's willing to do anything for views and laughs, trying to prove who can be more insufferable.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: In E20, Eliza goes on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge against ''anyone'' who has ever hurt Edits in the past. This mostly amounts to violently murdering each of them.
* VomitIndiscretionShot: Lydia's projectile vomiting onto a table in "Eliza's Incredible Sisterly Love!" is shown on-screen.
* WeaponForIntimidation:
** In E23, Kyle takes Edits' unloaded gun and uses it to threaten Albert to get his stuff back. Albert gets the upper hand and locks him back in his room, confiscating the gun -- even after Kyle points out it wasn't loaded.
** In E25, as a way of getting the fake Lydia to give her the money back, Eliza briefly takes out her taser and threatens her with it.
* WhamEpisode:
** E4, "A.C. Artificial Complex", revolves around the creation and introduction of Egor's RobotBuddy, Risi, who sticks around for the rest of the series.
** E12, "Kyle's Not Dead", being the longest episode of the series. We finally get to see what Edits does in his daily life and what his job is: he's a ''homicide detective''. Kyle's subsequent near-death experience changes the trajectory of his character once he realizes how tough Edits' life is, and instills a newfound value of his mortality in him. This episode also gives an EarlyBirdCameo to Eliza, who would go on to become one of the protagonists of the series.
** In E13, "Barely Beloved", supporting character [=MaoWriter=] is KilledOffForReal. The episode continues the Edits/Kyle dynamic after "Kyle's Not Dead" and also starts 9/17 and Kyle's unlikely alliance.
** E15, "Full-Time Commitment", Eliza and Edits have a RelationshipUpgrade and she becomes one of the show's major characters. This also starts Edits' CharacterDevelopment and marks the debut of his BenevolentBoss, Mrs. Lilly.
** E19, "Not Always Romantic", is where Mrs. Lilly gets married, with her and her husband appearing frequently afterwards. It also introduces Cindy, a supporting character.
** E22-E23, "No One Has to Die" and "The Great Tale of How Kyle Ruined It All" are an in-depth exploration of the Edits/Kyle dynamic. The two end up [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech finally venting their feelings about each other]], and Kyle does everything in his power to get them on better terms again, [[BittersweetEnding ending on a bittersweet note]].
** While much lighter in tone than the previous episode, E24, "Eliza's Extremely Lesbian Adventures!" reveals that Edits is actually Eliza's SecondLove. Before she met him, she had a relationship with a lesbian named Honey back in college. The same episode also reveals that Eliza isn't an only child, either; she had a little sister who died at a young age.
** E26, "The Sweetest Sauce", is where Edits TookALevelInCheerfulness. Befriending Honey makes him gain a new appreciation for life and the jokes about him [[DrivenToSuicide keeping a gun in case he wants to commit suicide]] are finally stopped.
** "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict" has Marvelynn finally confront Icelynn about her lifelong history of abusing her. By the end of it, Marvelynn disowns Icelynn from the family and accepts Eliza as her new sister.
* WhamShot: E26 has a moment where Tess tells Edits about Honey's backstory, and why she got so upset. A flashback shows Honey walking into her girlfriend's room and finding her dead on the ground, with blood everywhere. It explains why Honey's so upset by Edits' uncaring attitude towards death, and why she's hesitant to make new friends, because they might leave her unexpectedly.
* WhenSheSmiles:
** In E20, Eliza admits that she did some ''very'' questionable things just to make Edits happy and see him smile.
** The first time Honey smiles is when Tess compliments her for making a new friend. When she and Edits come over to cook and have dinner together, they are consistently smiling, showing how genuine their friendship has become.
* WhoNamesTheirKidDude: Edits is occasionally subject to these comments. In E21, the Butt Buddies think his name is made up. Even Eliza mistakes it for a nickname when she first hears it.
* WholeEpisodeFlashback:
** E18 shows how Kyle moved into the complex, what Edits' old job was like, and how he became a detective.
** E24 is a flashback to Eliza's college days, and how she first fell in love.
* WholePlotReference: E23 is a homage to Music/{{Jhariah}}'s ''The Great Tale of How I Ruined It All''; much like the protagonist of the album, Kyle spends much of the episode hiding out in his room and planning a revolution to overthrow authority and bring his life back to normal.
* {{Workaholic}}: Edits is known to hate missing work, works late hours on purpose, and outright names it as one of the few reasons why he's alive. He's been known to [[ForgetsToEat forget to eat]] due to spending so much time on his job.
* WorkingWithTheEx: Defied in E26. Since Honey was among the first to witness a murder case, Edits and Eliza have to work with her and ask questions. Edits has no problems with it, but Eliza doesn't get any work done and every time we see her, she's trying to avoid Honey, either by [[GraveMarkingScene visiting her sister's grave]] or rocking out to [[BreakUpSong break-up songs]] on the car radio.
* WrongNameOutburst: In E19, Eliza is incredibly hyped over meeting Mrs. Lilly's husband, a handsome NiceGuy named Lance. When Eliza starts talking about her ''own'' wedding, she describes it as "I'm gonna be like, 'this is my husband Lance...'" Everyone in the room is surprised, and Eliza is ''really'' embarrassed by it, to the point that she struggles to look Edits in the eyes afterwards. Edits is quite understanding, though.
----
* BreakoutCharacter: Eliza in the second half of season 1. While she had three minor appearances between E12 and E14, E15 is the one that really lets her personality shine. Eliza's [[ThePollyanna adorably kindhearted personality]], her loving relationship with Edits, and developed backstory led to her being a major or supporting character in most episodes after that point.
* FridgeBrilliance: Eliza's actions against the Butt Buddies make more sense when E24 reveals that Eliza also had people trying to break up a relationship she was in. It's likely that Stephen's actions hit too CloseToHome for her and she didn't want anyone else to go through what she did.
* GrowingTheBeard: While the series started improving with E10, it reaches its best around E18 or E19. Episodes are longer, have more emotional plots, more continuity, and focus more on [[BreakoutCharacter newly-introduced characters]] like Eliza and Honey.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** In E20, Eliza begins murdering people and hiding their bodies, killing many before admitting to Edits what she did. Come E24, we learn that Eliza had a sister who died when she was young, and Eliza spent much of her life hoping her sister was still alive because they NeverFoundTheBody.
** Honey helping Eliza process her sister's death in E24 is a sweet moment. But in the next episode, it turns out Eliza's trauma runs a lot deeper and she didn't actually get over it as easily as she thought she did.
** In E24, when Eliza tells her friends that Honey is now a mortician, she says she's "so happy for her" for following her dreams. "The Sweetest Sauce" shows the intense emotional toll Honey's job puts on her, and that while she did initially want it, she came to find it grating and overly depressing.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** In E16, when Edits first visits Eliza's house, he steps on a beer can (it's Spence's) and worriedly asks Eliza if she's an alcoholic, which she denies. Eliza ''does'' have an alcoholic ex, though, whom Edits becomes very close friends with ten episodes later.
** In E19, when Cindy says that she doesn't have a boyfriend, Eliza asks if she has a girlfriend because "that'd be cool!" E21 would reveal that Eliza is bisexual, and E24 shows that she ''used'' to have a girlfriend.
