** "The Great Tale of How Kyle Ruined It All" and "ELIZA'S GUIDE TO FAKING YOUR DEATH" are both named after Music/{{Jhariah}} albums.

* OpenMindedParent: The Grace family has mainly consisted of bakers and chefs. When Eliza told her parents she wanted to be a homicide detective instead, her parents were initially surprised, but ultimately let her do it because they felt she could handle it. In the present day, they're happy after seeing how much she enjoys her job. Similarly, in "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict", Eliza reveals that her parents reacted well to her coming out, simply saying that she'd always be a part of the family no matter who she loved.

** Edits does not appear in "Eliza's Extremely Lesbian Adventures!", "Malpractice Makes Perfect", "The Marvelous World of Sibling Conflict", or "[=LouisLynn=]".

* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: The show's earliest episodes were not only very short, but core concepts of it hadn't been established yet. The entirety of it was set in the complex, featuring characters who eventually stopped appearing like Doctor Patrick and Guy, and it wasn't established what Edits' job was (it took until E10 to confirm it, and E12 was the first to show it).

** In a desperate attempt to get out of a meeting with Honey, Eliza says she has to mail Kyle a birthday present. Edits points out that Kyle's birthday is five months away.

* IResembleThatRemark: In "[=LouisLynn=]", it's shown that Icelynn has a book of all-purpose comebacks that she's working of memorizing in case anyone argues with her. When Louis turns down being friends with Icelynn because of how pathetic that is, Icelynn's response is "Oh, yeah? Well... were you born this stupid or did you take lessons?"

* InsultBackfire: In "[=LouisLynn=]", Icelynn has a bunch of comebacks prepared in case people insult her. They turn out to be incredibly lame, consisting of things like "you're so full of shit, the toilet's jealous" and "were you born this stupid or did you take lessons?" Louis just laughs them off.

* NotHelpingYourCase: In "[=LouisLynn=]", Louis calls out Icelynn for her IrrationalHatred of her sister, pointing out that she seems to dedicate all her time to complaining about her even when she's not there. Icelynn decides that Louis needs to understand just what it's like to be with Marvelynn and imitates her, therefore proving his point.

** In "[=LouisLynn=]", Icelynn is pissed off by learning that Marvelynn is actually having a wonderful time without her sister at home.

* EvenTheLovingHeroHasHatedOnes: Eliza is a social person who has no trouble with making friends. However, she's run into a few people not even she can defend.
** Eliza has a run-in with resident office {{jerkass}} Icelynn. Despite her best efforts to get on Icelynn's good side, inviting her over for a nice dinner, Icelynn continues to be an UngratefulBastard. In E24, Eliza has no problems with mocking Icelynn. Once it turns out that Icelynn is [[BigSisterBully abusive to her younger sister]], Eliza -- who lost her sister when she was young -- gains even ''more'' contempt for her.
** In E24, Eliza gets into arguments with her college roommate, Grant. Grant wants Eliza to break up with Honey, repeatedly tells her she's making the wrong choice, and even forces her to go SpeedDating just so she'll hopefully find someone else. It turns out that not only is he just personally against Honey for superficial reasons, but Tess says he's kind of a creep in general. When talking to him with Honey and Tess, Eliza has no problem telling Grant to just fuck off.
** In E26, Eliza learns that her parents have spent the past few years being scammed by a girl also named Lydia. Lydia assumes the identity of Eliza's dead sister just to make her guilt even worse, and steals money for a scam charity that doesn't actually do anything. When Eliza confronts Lydia and talks about the trauma that losing her sister has caused the family, Lydia remains completely unsympathetic and refuses to give in. This leads Eliza to declare Lydia BeyondRedemption and say that the world would be ''better off'' if she died.

* {{Foreshadowing}}: E20 being [[spoiler:just a story]] is hinted at by LethalChef Eliza somehow being able to cook an entire multiple-course meal for her and Icelynn.
* FormerlyFat: Eliza was fat growing up, due to having rich parents and no control over how much candy she was allowed to eat. In college, she realizes that physical health is important to being a detective, and spends a year or two losing weight.
