In this rather [[AnachronicOrder Anachronically Ordered]] episode, Mal attempts to repair the ship [[InMediasRes after]] a catastrophic engine failure. While this is happening, dueling {{Flashback}}s explain HowWeGotHere as well as some EveryoneMeetsEveryone backstory.

When Mal bought ''Serenity'', it was a wreck. Nonetheless it was love at first sight, despite Zoe's wariness. To get her in working order, Mal hires Wash (whom Zoe [[{{Irony}} hates on sight]]) and a mechanic named Bester, who turns out to be incompetent. After Bester claims the ship is irreparable, Kaylee (with whom he had just been having sex next to the engine) fixes it in under a minute. She's offered his job on the spot.

Some unspecified amount of time later, Mal and Zoe are doing some crime when a gang tracks them down and demands their loot at gunpoint. Mal is suitably impressed that they were found at all, and Jayne, one of the gang members, takes credit. Instead of revealing where the loot is hidden, Mal bribes Jayne into defecting with a job offer. Mal rents out the shuttle to Inara, who accepts on the condition that he [[ContinuityNod never to walk into her shuttle without permission, or call her a whore]]. This completes the crew as of the pilot episode, where Book, River, and Simon arrive.

In the present day, a fault in the compression coil ([[{{Foreshadowing}} hinted at in the pilot]]) causes a huge explosion in the middle of Simon's birthday party. The blast injures Zoe and knocks out many of ''Serenity's'' functions, including life support and, fairly obviously, the ship's ability to move. Wash tries to stay by Zoe's side while Simon treats her, but Mal demands his help on the bridge, causing two shouting matches. Wash explains that they can't get any help because their course was designed deliberately to avoid contact with anyone, and Mal comes up with a kludge that would extend the signal while also forcing anyone who received it to pay attention.

Kaylee explains that the ship can't be fixed without a new catalyzer, meaning they are dead in the proverbial water. Crew morale dips as the ship gets colder and the oxygen supply deteriorates. Finally, Mal comes up with a last-ditch plan. Four people are sent on each shuttle in opposite directions with orders not to return unless told, leaving Mal on ''Serenity'' to wait for help. No one wants to leave him behind, but they eventually acquiesce.

Finally, another ship arrives. The captain is a {{Jerkass}} who brings a replacement catalyzer but decides to steal ''Serenity''. Mal takes a bullet defending his ship, but manages to force the thieves off at gunpoint. [The episode actually starts here.] Wounded, he injects himself with adrenaline in the medical bay, trudges to the engine room with the new part, plugs it in, and limps up to the bridge to call back the shuttles. He doesn't make it, but he wakes up on Simon's table anyway. As it turns out, the crew decided to come back for him, in spite of their orders.

The final flashback shows Mal and Zoe on a used ship lot. The salesman is in mid-pitch, trying to sell Mal on a flashy-looking rocket ship, but Mal isn't listening. His eyes have already found the last and most important member of his crew, sitting forlorn at the edge of the lot: a ''Firefly''-class transport.

----
!!Tropes in this episode:
* BaitAndSwitch: Chock full of it. Because of the anachronistic ordering, several transitions end up finishing at another point in time. The biggest one is the salesman's claim that "Take good care of her and she'll last you the rest of your life," heard as Mal is [[IronicEcho dying]]. The end of the episode reveals he was actually talking about another (fancier) ship, but Mal turns around and happens upon a certain dilapidated ''Firefly''-class ship...
** While arguing with Zoe about hiring Wash, Mal mentions that they recently acquired a "genius mechanic", implying that Kaylee had already joined the crew by that point... and then said "genius" turns out to be Bester, with Kaylee's actual introduction happening in a later flashback.
* BrilliantButLazy: Bester presented himself as this to excuse his slacking off. When Kaylee is able (from a single look ''while having sex'') to figure out an engine issue that left him baffled, Mal realizes the "lazy" part is far more accurate than the "brilliant" part and replaces Bester with Kaylee on the spot.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Wash started off as an odd dude that neither Mal or Zoe really liked, hired based on recommendations. He eventually proves his worth.
* CavalryBetrayal: Much to Mal's bad luck, the people who detect the emergency transmission from ''Serenity'' are SalvagePirates.
* CerebusCallBack: Mal really should've listened to Kaylee in "Serenity" and "The Train Job" about the compression coil she wanted to replace. The damage from its failure was even ''worse'' than she predicted.
* ChekhovsGun: Mal gives himself a ShotToTheHeart of adrenaline to keep him going since he helped Simon give Zoe one right after the accident.
* CoitusUninterruptus: We see a flashback where Mal goes to the engine room to get a status report on repairs to find his mechanic-at-the-time Bester busily putting it to a local girl with a starship fetish. Bester had...a hard time pulling himself away from his new friend to tell Mal why the ship wasn't fixed yet. But the girl in question is Kaylee, who proceeds to impress Mal by correctly diagnosing and fixing the engine problem right then and there. It's even implied that they'd only been doing it in the engine room in the first place because Kaylee wanted get a look at the engines, and was busy diagnosing the problem while he was occupied. Kaylee ''really'' likes engines.
* ContinuousDecompression: Mal uses this to put out a fire in Serenity's engine room. This is much more plausible because a fire merely needs to run out of oxygen to go out, and sealing/venting the room will help the fire use up all the oxygen, putting it out before it can damage too much equipment. Chemical fire retardants (e.g. the stuff in the red canisters and the stuff used for chemical fires) actually smother fires to put them out in real life, too!
* {{Determinator}}: Mal ''is'' going to get that catalyzer into the engine then reach the cockpit to call his crew back, Gorramit, even with a bullet in him.
* DyingAlone: Invoked by Inara as a FateWorseThanDeath... except for, you know, already dying and all.
* EveryoneMeetsEveryone: We learn how Mal and Zoe met Wash, Inara, Kaylee, and Jayne.
* ExplainExplainOhCrap: The crew of Serenity is in a dire situation with the life support system failing. They are in a deserted region of space with little chance of any ships wandering around there. Wash has lost all hope, when Mal suggests a way to boost the SOS signal.
-->'''Wash:''' What do you expect me to do, Mal?\
'''Mal:''' Whatever you have to. And if you can't do it from here, then get a suit on and go outside on the side of the boat...\
'''Wash:''' And what? Wave my arms around?\
'''Mal:''' Wave your arms around. Jump up and down. Divert the nav sats to the transmitter. Whatever.\
'''Wash:''' Divert the -- right! Because teenage pranks are fun when you're about to die!\
'''Mal:''' Give the beacon a boost, wouldn't it?\
'''Wash:''' Yes, Mal, it would boost the signal. But even if some passerby did happen to receive, all it would do is muck up their navigation.\
'''Mal:''' Could be that's true.\
'''Wash:''' Damn right, it's true. They'd be forced to stop and dig out our signal before they could even go anyplace.\
''[beat, Mal waits for Wash to get it]''\
'''Wash:''' ''[still yelling as if he's angry]'' Well maybe I should do that, then!\
'''Mal:''' ''[yelling back]'' Maybe you should!\
'''Wash:''' Okay!\
'''Mal:''' Fine!\
'''Jayne:''' ''[enters the room]'' What the hell do you two think you're doing? Fighting at a time like this? You'll use up all the air!
* ExpospeakGag: River tries to explain to Simon why she forgot his birthday.
-->"'Day' is a vestigial mode of time measurement, based on solar cycles. It's not applicable. ''(long pause)'' ... I didn't get you anything."
* FailsafeFailure: The explosion disables both the primary and backup life support systems.
* FalseReassurance: River telling Book that they're not going to run out of air... because they'll freeze to death first.
* FlashbackBPlot: Mixed with AnachronicOrder. As Mal struggles to treat his injuries and repair the ship, flashbacks alternate between [[HowWeGotHere the immediate lead-up to this event]] and the backstory of how Mal first purchased the ''Serenity'' and [[EveryoneMeetsEveryone assembled his trusty crew]].
* FlashbackEffects: Lighting and camera effects are used to create distinct visual styles for the scenes in the present (starting with Mal on the cargo bay floor), for the HowWeGotHere scenes in the recent past, and for the EveryoneMeetsEveryone scenes in the more distant past.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** River's ability to sense the approaching fireball before anyone else alludes to her psychic abilities, most notably seen in "[[Recap/FireflyE14ObjectsInSpace Objects in Space]]". As frequently happens, her utterance has two interpretations; Simon assumes her "fire" is a reminder to blow out his birthday candles.
** At the end of the episode, Jayne questions the genuineness of the incense in Inara's shuttle. In ''Film/{{Serenity}}'', Inara tricks The Operative with a Flashbang disguised as incense.
* GoingDownWithTheShip: [[DefiedTrope Defied]] in a way only Mal could. He's not staying on the ship as the shuttles leave because of this, he's staying because help ''will'' come and someone has to be on board for it. He turns out to be right.
* GoodNewsBadNews: Happy birthday Simon! We knew because an Alliance warrant had your birthday on it. Oh and cake! It's... dinner with some chocolate-ish frosting on it. Then the explosion.
* GuileHero: Mal and Zoe initially recruited Jayne using their wits, talking their way out of a bad situation by insinuating that Jayne was being paid too little, convincing him to turn on his old employer.
* HospitalSurprise: Mal passes out from blood loss and oxygen deprivation just as he restarts the engine, but before he can give the signal for his crew to return to Serenity. He wakes up in the medical facility, with the rest of his crew around him, being treated by Simon. It turns out that Zoe, who had last been seen unconscious and severely injured from an explosion, ordered the crew to go back for Mal, without waiting for his signal.
* HowWeGotHere: Three interweaving timelines--the very beginning of ''Serenity'', the beginning of the current predicament, and the present predicament.
* ICantLookGesture: The injured Zoe goes into cardiac arrest and Simon has to deliver a ShotToTheHeart. Inara flinches away as he slams the needle into Zoe's chest.
* InjuredSelfDrag: The episode starts with Mal gravely wounded and dragging himself through ''Serenity'' to the engine room to replace a critical part, with cuts back to the events [[HowWeGotHere leading up to how he got injured in the first place]].
* InterruptedIntimacy: In a flashback, Mal storms into the engine room to give his then-mechanic Bester a piece of his mind and walks in on him having sex with Kaylee. Kaylee sorts her clothes out and fixes the engine in nothing flat (having diagnosed the problem Bester couldn't fix while she was having sex with him). Mal fires Bester and hires Kaylee on the spot, and she runs off to ask her dad for permission with the back of her dress still only half-buttoned.
* {{Irony}}: Zoe didn't like Wash at first. Must have been the 'stache.
* ItHasBeenAnHonor: Subverted for laughs. Jayne looks like he's going to do this to Mal before he promptly leaves.
* LaymansTerms:
-->'''Kaylee:''' Catalyzer on the port compression coil blew. That's where the trouble started.\
'''Mal:''' I need that in Captain Dummy-Talk, Kaylee.\
'''Kaylee:''' We're dead in the water.
* LikeASurgeon: At Simon's birthday party, the crew (mainly Kaylee) surprise him with a cake. As Simon's a surgeon, Kaylee jokingly asks him to make the first incision. Sadly, an explosion cripples the ship before he can blow out the candles. [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse It's not known what happened to the cake.]]
* LoveAtFirstSight: Of a sort. The ending scene shows Mal staring lovingly at the soon-to-be-Serenity while tuning out a salesman trying to talk up a different ship. Interestingly, [[BirdsOfAFeather the only other crewmate to experience this is Inara]].
-->'''Inara:''' I love this ship. I have from the first moment I saw it.
* MacGuffin: Whatever "the stuff" that Mal's crew and Marco's were competing over in the Jayne flashback is never identified. All that's important is that it was valuable and the promise of a higher-than-seven-percent cut of the profits from it was enough to get Jayne to turn on Marco and join Mal.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: The SalvagePirates leave the ship when Mal threatens them, leaving behind the part Mal needed in the process. Justified given that showing him the part is how they were able to board in the first place.
* NotMakingThisUpDisclaimer: Shepherd Book is apparently relating a NoodleIncident that happened while he was at the Southdown Abbey on Persephone to much hilarity. We the viewers join Our Intrepid Heroes at this exchange:
-->'''Zoe:''' ''(laughing)'' No! That is not true. No.\
'''Book:''' I swear it is!
* NotSoDifferentRemark: Defied. When the scavenger that shot Mal leaves ''Serenity'' at gunpoint, he claims "You would've done the same." Mal growls "[[IfIWantedYouDead We can already see that I haven't.]]"
* OriginsEpisode: The episode features flashbacks showing how each of the main characters ended up on Serenity (except for Book, Simon and River, who came aboard in the pilot episode). Zoe was Mal's old Army buddy from the Unification Wars, Wash signed on as pilot right after Mal and Zoe found ''Serenity'', Jayne was a bandit who tried to kill Mal (until Mal convinced him to turn against his two partners by offering to pay him better), Mal rented a shuttle to Inara as she pointed out her reputation would open more doors for him, and Kaylee replaced the ship's original engineer after Mal found her having sex with him and discovered that she knew more about engines than he did.
* ThePeteBest: In-universe, we discover that Kaylee was not the crew's original mechanic. That guy, Bester, was quickly let go when Mal discovered Kaylee.
* PetTheDog: Jayne goes out of his way to help Mal close all the air vents leading below deck to buy the former time to repair Serenity's engines, and even preps a spacesuit for Mal to wear in case he runs out of air before he finishes the repairs.
* PornStache: Wash, at first. This was what Zoe found so off about him.
* SalvagePirates: A deep-space salvage crew decides they'd rather steal Serenity and kill its crew than make a trade for the one spare part needed to get the ship working again.
-->'''Capt. Malcolm Reynolds:''' You know anything that's worth anything's really right here in this cargo bay. So you take a look around, decide what you think is fair.\
'''Other captain:''' Already have. ''(gutshots Mal)'' We're taking your ship.
* ShotToTheHeart: Simon, to restart Zoe's heart in the absence of a defibrillator, and Mal, to keep himself going with a bullet in his gut.
* SpectacularSpinning: When the engine isn't spinning, things are bad...
* TheWorfEffect: An interesting example; Mal has to rough up his pilot to get him on the bridge, and Jayne, resident tough guy, is shown being visibly scared of Mal.
* WorstAid: Injecting ''anything'' into the heart. DoNotTryThisAtHome.
* WrittenInAbsence: Creator/GinaTorres was on her honeymoon with Creator/LaurenceFishburne at the start of shooting, so Zoe is injured to provide enough scenes without her to fill up four days of work.
* YouAreNotAlone: At the end, when Mal is about to fall asleep, he sits up with a start and asks if they'll be there when he wakes up. Book assures him they will be.
