7A sniper rifle is specially constructed to hit targets accurately at a longer range than standard small arms. They come in a variety of sizes and types. As an artifact it has strong connotations of power and exoticism, delivering [[InstantDeathBullet instant]] [[OneHitKill death]] from afar. Those using it are usually seen as a special class of fighter through the mindset and skill-level involved: see ColdSniper, FriendlySniper. Outside wartime scenarios it has mixed or sinister association with [[ProfessionalKiller assassins]]. An assassin's sniper rifle will often be [[IKEAWeaponry convertible to components]] for a stealthy getaway.

9Used in a SnipingMission, and required for a SniperDuel. Often, there will be a SniperScopeGlint that gives away a sniper's position. Some video games may venerate a NoScope. This is a {{Standard FPS Gun|s}}. When an ordinary sniper rifle is deemed insufficient (either because of extreme range, to make the sniper more visually impressive by giving them a bigger gun, or just because ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill) an [[{{BFG}} anti-materiel rifle]] (generally a minimum of .50 caliber/12.7mm bore diameter) will come into play.

11Historically, the first military snipers (or "sharpshooters" as they were called then) used civilian hunting rifles such as the long-barreled "Pennsylvania" and "Kentucky" rifles, or ordinary military-issued rifles. UsefulNotes/TheAmericanCivilWar saw the first true sniping rifles such as the Whitworth rifle, a big, heavy weapon with an octagonal barrel and a 3x telescope sight that could hit a target a thousand yards away. By 1900, regular arms technology had caught up, and for the first half of the 20th century, sniper rifles were simply standard-issue rifles fitted with scopes. As carbines and assault rifles were adopted as the main infantry weapons, however, specialized rifles for this role became necessary once again. Today, snipers typically use bolt-action rifles fitted with powerful scopes and modified for increased range and accuracy.

Aluminium is paramagnetic, which effectively means it is non-magnetic, so couldn't be used in a railgun, which requires a ferromagnetic projectile. Firing any projectile at 'close to the speed of light' is pretty impractical - the LHC at CERN is the world's most powerful particle accelerator. It's 27 kilometres (17 miles) in circumference, and accelerates subatomic particles to around 99% of the speed of light. Doing that with something handheld is obviously impractical. Not to mention Railguns only being able to fire at around 8000 miles per hour, or about 1% of the speed of light. An X-Ray scope is almost as ridiculous, though the problems are covered on XRayVision.[[/note]]
