Location ThemeNaming is just what it sounds like - a group of characters all named after places. Like EdibleThemeNaming, this tends to be done in less serious works, because a large group of people all named after locations is faintly ridiculous.

Characters whose names follow this theme tend to be named after locations in one area, such as streets in New York or restaurants in Tokyo. In some cases, different groups will be named after locations in different parts of the world, so one might end up with, say, a group of people named after Italian rivers fighting a group named after German towns.

A variant is to name characters after directions, such as up/down/left/right or north/south/east/west. This tends to be more common in Japanese works.

[[folder:Advertising]]
* An [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuaIJGJNbzo ad for the Chrysler Concorde]] has a girl talking to her mother about why she was named Savannah, and being told it was because she was conceived in Savannah, Georgia. The girl then asks why her baby sister is named Concorde, leading to the mother looking embarrassed as the girl has a ParentalSexualitySquick and the voiceover discusses the [[AutoErotica roomy back seat]]. After complaints, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNdVt9g2hUc an alternate version]] replaces the mention of the back seat with "Concord, Massachusetts, silly."

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* ''Manga/SazanEyes'' has several characters, usually demons, named after ancient cities of India, such as Benares, Gupta, Madurai and Kerala.
* In ''Anime/{{Aggretsuko}}'', the members of the [[IdolSinger idol group]] [=OTMGirls=] all have names that refer to their positions on stage. Lead singer Manaka's name means "center", while Hidarin and Miggy's names are derived from the Japanese words for "left" (''hidari'') and "right" (''migi'').
* Each Martian Kataphrakts in ''Anime/AldnoahZero'' is an AceCustom and named after a specific geological landmark on Mars.
* ''Manga/CaseClosed'' has ThemeNaming all over the place, but Shinichi's surroundings are named after locations in London (due to calling himself the modern Franchise/SherlockHolmes, and part of his alias Conan Edogawa being taken from Holmes' creator Creator/ArthurConanDoyle's name). Shinichi lives in lot 2-21, Beika (221-b Baker Street, Holmes' address), Tokyo; next to Beika there's Haido (Hyde Park), and the river that flows across the neighbourhoods is called Teimutsu (the River Thames).
* All the regular characters in ''Anime/CuteHighEarthDefenseClubLove'' have [[HotSpringsEpisode Onsens]] for family names. The two Hakone brothers, Yumoto and Gora, are even named after the connected onsens of Hakone-Yumoto and Hakone-Gora.
* In ''Manga/ExcelSaga'', the members of ACROSS are named for hotel chains, and most everyone else is named for neighborhoods in the city of Fukuoka ("F City, F Prefecture" in which the anime takes place, even if the manga keeps it as "Fukuoka, Fukuoka"). "ACROSS" itself is named after a convention center (one translator said it was like a New York based cult being named "Javits").
* ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'' has a few, such as Noriaki Kakyoin (Kakyōin is a town in the Sendai ward Aoba-ku) and Koichi Hirose (named for the Hirose river).
* Most of the characters in ''Manga/KamichamaKarin'' have surnames corresponding to a train line or station ([[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanazono_Station_%28Kyoto%29 Hanazono]], [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kujo_Station Kujo]], [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karasuma_Station Kara]][[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karasuma_Line suma]], etc.)
* The characters of ''Manga/{{Kanamemo}}'' make use of the cardinal direction theme name motif. There's Hinata ''Azuma'' (east), Haruka ''Nishi''da (west), Yume ''Kita''oka (north), Yuuki ''Minami'' (south) and Kana ''Naka''machi (center). Their boss, Saki ''Ama''no has the character for "sky" in her name, since she is above them all.
* ''Manga/KotouraSan'', per WordOfGod:
** Haruka Kotoura comes from [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kotoura,_Tottori Kotoura, Tottori]].
** Dai'chi Muroto comes from [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muroto,_K%C5%8Dchi Muroto, Kochi]].
** He also said claimed Yoshihisa Manabe comes from some toponym, but he forgot where it is.
* The cast of ''Manga/LaidBackCamp'' have family names that come from different Japanese cities, but ironically none of these places are located in Yamanashi, where the story is set.
** (Nadeshiko) Kagamihara, Ena (Saito) and (Chiaki) Oogaki are in Gifu.
** (Aoi) Inuyama is in Aichi.
** (Rin) Shima and (Minami) Toba are in Mie.
* In ''Anime/LoveLiveSuperstar'', which takes place (at least partially) in Shibuya, the leader of the group is named Kanon Shibuya. That alone isn't uncommon, but the second season introduces a new rival, Margarete Wien, who is from Vienna.[[note]]The name "Wien" is pronounced identically to how "Vienna" is pronounced in Japanese."[[/note]]
* ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'' has a non-character example: All Might tends to name his attacks after the different states of America, such as "Detroit Smash". Midoriya sometimes does the same, due to being a huge fan of All Might. [[spoiler: Fittingly, his ultimate move, used as the FinishingMove for his final battle with his longtime ArchEnemy, is "United States of Smash".]]
* Characters in ''Literature/ThePetGirlOfSakurasou'' have their surnames taken from railway stations in Tokyo:
** Sorata Kanda: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanda_Station_(Tokyo) Kanda Station]]
** Mashiro Shiina: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiinamachi_Station Shiinamachi Station]]
** Nanami Aoyama: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aoyama-itchōme_Station Aoyama-itchōme Station]]
** Jin Mitaka: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitaka_Station Mitaka Station]]
** Misaki Kamiigusa: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kami-Igusa_Station Kami-Igusa Station]]
** Ryuunosuke Akasaka: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akasaka_Station_(Tokyo) Akasaka Station]]
** Chihiro Sengoku: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sengoku_Station Sengoku Station]]
* ''Anime/PrettyCure'':
** The [[QuirkyMinibossSquad four denizens of Labyrinth]] from ''Anime/FreshPrettyCure'' are each named for directions: Eas, Wester, Souler, and Northa. Their human alter egos use the Japanese word for the directions as their last names (Setsuna Higashi, Hayato Nishi, Shun Minami, and Nayuta Kita).
** In ''Anime/SuitePrettyCure'', Hibiki and Kanade's family names have the characters for, respectively, "North" (''Hou''jou) and "South" (''Minami''no), reflecting their conflicting personalities. Meanwhile, two supporting characters named Waon and Seika have "West" and "East" respectively (''Nishi''jima and ''Higashi''yama).
* The family of Sanosuke Sagara from ''Manga/RurouniKenshin'' has names that contain kanji relating to directions: Sanosuke has in his name the kanji for "left" (read as "sa" in this compound or "hidari" when alone), his sister Uki the one for "right" (u/ migi), his little brother Outa the one for "center" (ou), his father Kamishimoemon has both "up" (kami/ ue) and "down" (shimo/ shita) and the name of his mother Naname means "diagonal".
* The four main girls of ''Manga/StrawberryOneHundredPercent'' are named after the four cardinal directions: Toujou Aya (''tou''=East), Kitaouji Satsuki (''kita''=North), Nishino Tsukasa (''nishi''=West), and Minamoto Yui (''minami''=South). And, of course, the main character, Manaka Junpei (''naka''=middle).
* Pretty much every character of note in ''Anime/TenchiMuyo''. To begin with, almost all the names initially came from locations and landmarks in the Okayama area. But there are additional meanings within them depending on what variety of Japanese is used to translate them.
* The main band of characters in ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'' are named for directions ''Kami''na (above/up), Simon/''Shimo''n (below/under), Yoko (beside), Nia (a play on near), and Rosshiu (an anagram of ''ushiro'', behind). Darry and Gimmy use ThemeTwinNaming to fit nicely into this. (''Dari'' = ''hidari'', or ''left'', ''Gimi'' = ''migi'', or ''right''.) All of these relate to some parts of the main band's personality: Simon looks up to Kamina, Kamina sees Simon as something to help improve himself, Yoko is loyal, Nia is close, Rosshiu is somewhat untrustworthy, and Darry/Gimmy are siblings.
* The girls of ''Manga/TokyoMewMew'' are all named after plants or [[EdibleThemeNaming desserts]], and their last names follow the pattern of [[ColourfulThemeNaming Colour]] Place (Momomiya = Peach Shrine, Midorikawa = Green River, etc.)
* In ''[[{{Manga/YanchaGalNoAnjou-san}} Yancha Gal no Anjou-san]]'' all the main characters are named after cities in Aichi prefecture, Seto, Anjou, Toyoda, Chita, Inuyama and Komaki.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* In a ''Franchise/{{Justice League|OfAmerica}} [[WestCoastTeam Europe]]'' story written by Creator/GregWeisman, the team meet a group of [[{{Expy}} familiar-looking]] WesternAnimation/{{Gargoyles}} at Notre Dame Cathedral. They are, of course, all named after locations in Paris, except for the leader, Behemoth (Goliath), his daughter Angelique (Angela) and the villain Demonique (Demona).
* In ''ComicBook/TransformersMoreThanMeetsTheEye'', the Decepticon Justice Division are five extremely powerful, extremely sadistic [[ColdBloodedTorture Cold Blooded]] {{Torture Technician}}s, all given codenames based on the first five cities to fall to the Decepticons in the war. [[WordOfGod According to author James Roberts]], their lineup has changed, but their names do not, turning each one into a sort of LegacyCharacter. The current lineup includes [[TalkingTheMonsterToDeath Tarn]], [[NightmareFace Vos]], [[ElectricTorture Kaon]], [[ImMelting Helex]], and [[TurbineBlender Tesaurus]].
* ''ComicBook/TheUltimates'': The European Union Super Soldier Initiative started with Captain Britain (a name that was a variation of Captain America, the first supersoldier), and by the time they got around to Captain Italy, they just sort of figured "well, might as well roll with it".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* In a ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' fic "Re:Flection Scenario," the [[BigBadDuumvirate Heralds of Dawn]] are named after compass directions: Norius (North), Weselo (West), Easen (East), and Souzi (South). Their apprentice, Coera, seems to be named for a centre or "core." [[spoiler:Ultimately subverted for Norius, whose real name is Asru.]]
* ''Fanfic/ShakedownShenanigans'': The USS ''Bajor'' is part of a production run of 28 ''Galaxy''-class starships, all of which are named after Federation homeworlds. Andoria, Cait, Earth, Vulcan, Trill, Coridan, Benzar, and Zakdorn are also mentioned.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film -- Live-Action]]
* In ''Film/{{Cube}}'', all the characters are named after prisons, complete with character traits modeled after the prisons'. Kazan (the autistic man) is a disorganized prison. Rennes (the "mentor") pioneered many of today's prison policies. Quentin (the policeman) is known for brutality. Holloway is a women's prison. Alderson is a prison where isolation is a common punishment. Leavenworth runs on a rigid set of rules (Leaven's mathematics), and the new prison is corporately owned and built (Worth, hired as an architect).
* {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d in ''Film/ForrestGump''. Forrest's Army buddies in Vietnam were Dallas, Phoenix and Brooklyn. None of them came from the city they were named after, or at least that’s what they told Forrest when he asked.
* In ''Film/HotelArtemis,'' when a patient is admitted, they get assigned to a specific room, which all have names of different cities, and they take on that name as an alias as they're being treated. At the start of the film, there's already a Mr. Albequerque and a Ms. Nice (as in France). When the bank robbers are admitted, the one in the most dire straits is assigned the Honolulu room, and becomes Honolulu. His brother, in less trouble but still needing treatment, is dubbed Waikiki. Even the orderly is dubbed Everest (likely because he's a mountain of a man), but the lady in charge is just [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep The Nurse.]]
* All the characters at the motel in ''Film/{{Identity}}'' have names like this, based on US States (Ed Dakota, Officer Rhodes, Paris Nevada, etc.) Though it isn't revealed at first until one character is flipping through everyone's [=IDs=] with a map on the wall nearby. Seems like just a coincidence until [[spoiler: he also notices they also ALL have the same birthday. Turns out they are all separate personalities of a serial killer with a traumatic past tied to a motel]]
* ''Film/WrongfullyAccused'' has many characters named after cities from the director's native Minnesota (Cass Lake, Fergus Falls, Orono, Bagley, Fridley), a twofer in the case of Hibbing Goodhue (the former a city, the latter a county).
* The four main characters in ''Film/{{Zombieland}}'' identify themselves by the names of their destinations (Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, Little Rock) so as not to form "personal attachments."
** In a flashback, Columbus learns about the zombie virus when he's attacked by his neighbor. The two apparently didn't know each other well, as they refer to each other by their apartment numbers.
** ''Film/ZombielandDoubleTap'' continues the trend with Albuquerque, Flagstaff, Berkeley, Nevada... and one that could be the person's actual name, Madison.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* Creator/TomHolt's ''Barking''. The werewolf law firm is named Ferris and Loop (after Fenris and Lupine) while the vampire firm is named Crosswoods (cross: trans. Woods: sylvania).
* ''{{Literature/Discworld}}''
** In early books, gargoyles were named after the streets they were on (such as Cornice-overlooking-Broadway).
** Members of the Guild of Gamblers are often named after towns and cities, like Doc Pseudopolis or Scrote Jones. It's a Discworld axiom (but one that, fortunately for the Guild, few seem to know) that you should ''never'' play cards with someone named after a city (or named Doc).
* In ''Literature/NorthOfBeautiful'' by Justina Chen Headley, the main character Terra's siblings are all named after map terms because their father is a cartographer. Terra's name sounds pretty normal, but her other brother is Mercatur.
* In ''Literature/TheSavannahReidMysteries'', Savannah and her siblings are all named after Georgia towns: Savannah, Alma, Waycross, Jesup, Atlanta, Cordele, Vidalia, Macon, and Marietta.
* The mystery of ''Literature/TheWestingGame'' is unraveled when the ThemeNaming is worked out: [[spoiler:Windy Windkloppel, Samuel Westing, Barney Northrup, Sandy [=McSouthers=] and Julian Eastman]] are all the same person.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* In ''Series/CornerGas'', a comedy set and filmed in small-town Saskatchewan, Canada, the last names of all the recurring characters are towns in Saskatchewan.
* ''Series/GameOfThrones'' and ''Series/HouseOfTheDragon'': In Westeros, noble bastards are given a particular surname based from the region where they were born: Snow (The North), Stone (The Vale), Rivers (The Riverlands), Hill (The Westerlands), Flowers (The Reach), Pyke (Iron Islands), Sand (Dorne), and Waters (Crownlands).
* ''Series/GinnyAndGeorgia'': Georgia is a Southerner whose name's that of a Southern state. Her daughter has the full name Virginia, another Southern state (who [[DoNotCallMePaul only likes her nickname Ginny]]).
* JustForFun/StatlerAndWaldorf from ''Series/TheMuppetShow'' are named after hotels in New York City. One episode introduces Waldorf's wife Astoria.
* ''Series/KamenRiderDouble'' is made up of [[FusionDance two individuals merging together]]: Shotaro ''Hidari'' controls the ''left'', physical side, while the ''right'', {{elemental|Powers}} side is controlled by his partner...[[SubvertedTrope Phillip]]. ([[spoiler:Whose real name is ''[[DoubleSubversion Raito]]'' Sonozaki.]])
* In ''Series/MoneyHeist'', each of the robbers, except for The Professor, has a city as their code name. At the start of the series, the gang features Tokyo, Berlin, Nairobi, Moscow, Denver, Rio, Oslo and Helsinki. Those who join it for the second heist also get such names, such as Stockholm and Palermo.
* The trolls in ''Series/RogerAndTheRottentrolls'' are all named for places in Yorkshire. Even Blacksyke the evil witch - the name comes from a coal mine.
* In ''Series/StarTrekDeepSpaceNine'' all the runabouts assigned to [=DS9=] were named for rivers on Earth, and the ship type itself is the ''Danube''-class. After their third runabout gets blown up, Kira Nerys lampshades this with a snide remark that "it's a good thing Earth has so many rivers."
* Every season of ''Series/{{Survivor}}'' is named after its location[[note]]until the series permanently settled in Fiji from season 33 (2016) onward, making this unfeasible[[/note]], and the teams are often named after a feature of the place - in ''Tocantins'', one is the region ([[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microregion_of_Jalap%C3%A3o Jalapao]]) and the other a local tribe ([[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timbira_language Timbira]]).
* ''Series/UltramanTaro'' has four members of ZAT (Kitajima (N), Nanbara (S), [[TheHero Higashi (E)]], Nishida (W)) named after the cardinal points.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Music]]
* All of the tracks of Music/ESPosthumus' ''Unearthed'' are named after ancient cities/locations of varying significance.
** Menouthis, a sacred city in Ancient Egypt, was submerged in the 8th century AD due to earthquakes or flooding.
* The ''Compass'' [=EPs=] by Music/EgoLikeness are named after the four cardinal directions.
* ''Minami'' (south) of ''Music/ConfessionExecutiveCommittee'' was named that way because he was introduced in a music video with LIP×LIP, whose first video only had them identified as the "Prince of the East" and the "Prince of the West".
* The French [[ElectronicDanceMusic EDM]] group {{Music/Jakarta}} is named after the city in {{UsefulNotes/Indonesia}}.
* All of 48 group and Sakamichi Series names are based on the area or city for the former and the audition venue or streets in Tokyo for the later. For example, Music/AKB48 is named after Akihabara district in Tokyo whereas Music/Nogizaka46 came from SME Nogizaka Building where the final audition was held
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Newspaper Comics]]
* In ''ComicStrip/{{Zits}}'', we have Zuma, La Jolla, and Redondo, all named after beaches in California.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Professional Wrestling]]
* LOTS of examples. These are merely a sampling.
* [[Wrestling/TheMidnightExpress "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton]] named his top-rope legdrop the "Alabama Jam." When he was teaming with [[Wrestling/WilliamRegal Lord Steven Regal]] in the [=Bluebloods=] as Earl Robert Eaton, he renamed it the "[[UsefulNotes/BritishTouristAttractions Tower of London."]]
** When Brian Christopher (Wrestling/JerryLawler's son) did the move, he called it the Tennessee Jam. Wrestling/ChrisCandido and Wrestling/BallsMahoney call it the [[{{Joisey}} Jersey Jam.]]
* Wrestling/PlayboyBuddyRose called his DDT the "Las Vegas Jackpot."

* Wrestling/{{WWE}} Superstar Wrestling/ReyMysterioJr's trademark moves are called "West Coast Pop", obviously named from West Coast of the United States, and "619", which is the area code of San Diego, California (Also, part of the west coast by the way), his hometown.
* Wrestling/RingOfHonor's "The Panama City Playboy" Adam Cole calls his [[SuplexFinisher German Suplex]] "Florida Keys."
* Ring Of Honor's first top prospect winner Mike Bennett uses an Anaconda Vice called "Go back to Japan." (the move was innovated by Hiroyoshi Tenzan, a Japanese man)
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* Some of the villagers in ''VideoGame/AnimalCrossing'' are named after certain real-life locations, particularlly those villagers who belong to a species that is particularly common in a specific part of the world: Alice, Canberra and Sydney, three Koala villagers, are all named after cities in Australia, whereas Deli, a monkey villager, is named after New Delhi, the capital of India.
* The 1998 version of ''[[VideoGame/Battlezone1998 Battlezone]]'' has the US-backed NSDF name their Recyclers (the backbone unit of their base-building activities) after US states, mimicking the US Navy's practice for battleships in the early to mid 20th century. Among others, the ''Montana'' is rushed in to defend the NSDF's main base on the Moon from an unexpected CCA (the Soviet counterpart) attack early in the war; later on Venus the ''Texas'' and ''Colorado'' are sent to prepare a two-pronged assault on a CCA base [[spoiler:when the ''Colorado'' is destroyed along with the rest of the base by a squad of the CCA's new Golem walker units.]]
* The [[VideoGame/DisgaeaHourOfDarkness first installment]] of the ''Franchise/{{Disgaea}}'' series named quite a few of its primary characters after volcanos, including Etna, Vulcanus (From Vulcano, Italy), Maderas (La Madera), Krichevskoy (Kliuchevskoi), and Lamington. Laharl is named after a type of pyroclastic mudslide that occurs after eruptions.
* ''VideoGame/Halo2'' features orbital defense platforms stationed around Earth named after cities or small countries, including ''Athens'', ''Malta'', and ''Cairo''. All three are targeted by the Covenant for bombs so that the invasion fleet can break through to Earth's surface -- the former two are destroyed while ''Cairo'' escapes due to Master Chief being able to get the planted bomb off in time.
* ''VideoGame/KanColle'' has Japanese and American ships, which follow their respective navies' historical naming conventions: IJN light cruisers are named for rivers, heavy cruisers and battlecruisers are named for mountains, and battleships are named for provinces, while USN cruisers are named for cites and battleships are named for states.
* ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' has main heroes Sora (sky), Riku (shore), and Kairi (ocean village); their GenerationXerox predecessors Ventus (wind), Terra (earth), and Aqua (water); and Kairi's two offshoots, Naminé (wave) and Xion (tide).
* ''Franchise/MassEffect'':
** The Human Systems Alliance Navy uses this trope as the naming convention for all of its ships. Dreadnoughts are named for mountains on Earth such as ''Everest'' and ''Kilimanjaro''. Cruisers are named for Earth cities such as ''Madrid'' and ''Tokyo''. Frigates are named after famous battles in history such as ''[[CoolStarship Normandy]]'' and ''Agincourt''. The only exception are Carriers which are named after famous people like ''Albert Einstein'' and ''Benjamin Davis''.
** Salarians have [[OverlyLongName very long names]] that derive from the locations where they were born. A Salarian's full name includes: the planet they were born on, the country, the city, the district, their family name, and finally their given name. An example would be: Gorot II Heranon Mal Dinest Got Inoste Ledra. In this case, the first name is "Ledra" and the family name is "Inoste", while the rest are the locations in order from planet down to district.
** In addition to a family name, Quarian names are also based on both the ship they were born on and the ship they currently live in. For example, Tali's full name is: Tali'Zorah vas Neema nar Rayya. The Vas prefix denotes the ship they currently live on which in this case is the "Neema", and Nar is the prefix for the ship they were born on, in this case Tali was born on the "Rayya". All Quarians automatically have the Nar prefix name when they are born, however, they do not receive the Vas prefix name until they've completed their [[RiteOfPassage Pilgrimage]] and have chosen a ship to live on when they return to the Migrant Fleet. The Vas prefix name can also change if a Quarian changes ships, whether done of their own volition or forced upon them, such as when Tali was under trial in her LoyaltyMission and had her ship name forcibly changed from vas Neema to vas Normandy.
* Shopkeepers in ''VideoGame/NetHack'' are all named after towns from various countries, depending on the type of shop.
* ''VideoGame/StarTrekArmada'': The Federation dilithium mining vessels share their names with various rivers on Earth, similar to the runabouts from [=DS9=].
* In ''VideoGame/{{Stellaris}}'', the default names of destroyer-size ships for the [[UnitedNationsIsASuperpower UNE]] are major cities on Earth. Some construction ships can also be named by default after geographic regions on Earth like continents, rivers, oceans, and smaller seas. A human player can Invoke or Defy this as they wish.
* ''VideoGame/ThemsFightinHerds'' names the cattle characters after USA states. In addition to the playable fighter Arizona, there's her father, named Texas, and mother, named Minnesota.
* According to her spellcards, Alice Margatroid of ''Franchise/TouhouProject'' names all of her dolls after mountains, cities and countries. Her most well-known type of doll are the Eerily Luminous Shanghai Dolls, to the point that fandom likes to portray her has having a single, ''unique'' doll ''named'' Shanghai.
* ''VideoGame/TheWorldEndsWithYou'': The bosses (the three Game Masters and the Conductor) have last names relating to directions: Yodai ''Higashi''zawa (east), Sho ''Minami''moto (south), Mitsuki Ko''nishi'' (west) and Megumi ''Kita''niji (north).
* In the ''[[VideoGame/{{X}} X-Universe]]'', Terran capital ships are named for Japanese cities. We have the Yokohama frigate, the Tokyo carrier, the Osaka destroyer, and -- in ''X3: Albion Prelude'' -- the Kyoto battleship.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Animation]]
* ''WebAnimation/RedVsBlue'' has a bevy of Freelancer agents named after U.S. States.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* ''Webcomic/MoringMarkTOHComics'' does this with Skara, who already shared her name with a city in canon, and extends it out to other members of her family (though without any theme between them beyond all being cities) with [[FanCreatedOffspring her daughter]] being named Milan and her [[{{Familiar}} palisman]] being [[NamedByTheAdaptation given the name]] Cayenne.
* The members of the Jones family in the "Cliffhangers" theme in ''Webcomic/IrregularWebcomic'' are all named after USA states (a parody of ''Franchise/IndianaJones''), including Montana Jones, his father North Dakota Jones, and his grandfather Minnesota Jones.
* In ''Webcomic/StarImpact'', Bondi is named for [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bondi_Beach Bondi Beach]] in Sydney, Australia, Etna is named for [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Etna Mount Etna]] in Sicily, Italy, and Sanfran is named for UsefulNotes/SanFrancisco in California, USA.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* The UK stop motion series ''WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfPortlandBill'' was about a lighthouse keeper named Portland Bill and his assistants Ross and Cromerty. Portland Bill is a narrow promontory off the coast of Dorset, and at the other end of the country, Ross and Cromerty is an area of the Scottish Highlands. Both have notable lighthouses. Most of the other characters had names that would be equally familiar to listeners of the Shipping Forecast.
* In ''WesternAnimation/{{Fillmore}}'', a middle-school parody of '70s cop shows, the main characters are all named after streets in San Francisco -- and ''Series/TheStreetsOfSanFrancisco'' was a classic '70s cop show.
* In a mixture of ThemeNaming and MeaningfulName, ''WesternAnimation/{{Gargoyles}}'' had the titular characters choose their names from landmarks and districts in New York City where they [[FishOutOfTemporalWater woke up in modern times]], to suit their new lives there: Hudson, Brooklyn, Lexington, Broadway and Bronx. Traditionally, Gargoyles do not have names, though many of them have taken names in modern times and often employ a clan theme when doing so. Originally, Goliath was the only member of his clan with a name, which was given to him by humans who are so hung up on naming things.
** And the Clone Clan are named after similar places in Los Angeles. Specifically Burbank, Malibu, Brentwood, and Hollywood for Hudson, Brooklyn, Lexington, and Broadway respectively (Bronx did not have a clone).
** Three of the named members of the Ishimura Clan (Kai, Yama and Sora) are named after places found in nature. (Sea, Mountain and Sky, respectively.) It can be assumed the rest of the clan follows a similar convention.
* Many characters from ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' are named after streets in Portland, where Matt Groening is from. These include the ''Flanders'' family, Mayor ''Quimby'' and Reverend ''Lovejoy.'' Groening notes that they dropped the theme fairly quickly, since finding good names took too long.
* On ''WesternAnimation/StarTrekLowerDecks'', all ''California''-class starships seen so far have been named after cities in California. In addition, all shuttlecraft aboard the ''Cerritos'' are named after national parks in California.
* All of the Wombles in ''WesternAnimation/TheWombles'' are, as in the books, named after locations in Great Uncle Bulgaria's atlas: thus we have Orinoco, Tomsk, and Wellington, to name but three. For the revival Bulgaria's maps must have shrunk in the wash from an atlas to an A-Z as the new Wombles are named almost exclusively after London Boroughs.

* The naming system of the US Navy used to name cruisers after cities, and battleships after states. Now the same seems to apply, respectively, to attack and ballistic missile submarines. Of course, the new Virginia class attack boats go back to being named after states, so who really knows.
** This was done because the SSBN's were designated "Capital" class ships, like the old battleships were and Carriers (which get named after Presidents or similar persona) are. Now it seems someone decided the Virginia class would function as capital ships in the absence of new SSBN construction.
** Some aircraft carriers have also been named for (the geographic location of) battles of the War of Independence (Saratoga, Bunker Hill, Lexington, Princeton, and Yorktown, for instance), although others used names of old US warships (e. g. Enterprise, Wasp, Ranger, Hornet). Many smaller carriers used for amphibious operations are named for battles that included amphibious landings, such as Tarawa, Tripoli, and Incheon.
** Towards the end of UsefulNotes/WorldWarII, the United States began construction of a new class of "Large Cruisers"[[note]][[InsistentTerminology Officially directed never to be referred to as Battlecruisers]][[/note]], which would have acted as dedicated cruiser killers. These were planned to be named for six US territories (two of which later became states): Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, The Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Samoa, though only the first two were completed before the program was cancelled. Had all six ships been completed, it could have resulted in an American cruiser bearing the name of a sovereign nation (the Philippine Islands were recognized as an independent nation in 1946).
* In the [[UsefulNotes/KatanasOfTheRisingSun Imperial Japanese Navy]], battleships were named after provinces, battlecruisers and heavy cruisers were named after mountains, and light cruisers were named after rivers. Among battleships, Fuso was an OddNameOut, being named after an old name for Japan. The Kongo class battlecruisers kept their names when they were reclassified as fast battleships. Likewise, Akagi, Kaga, and Shinano (laid down as a battlecruiser and two battleships, respectively) kept their names after being converted to carriers.
* In the Imperial German Navy of UsefulNotes/WorldWarI, roughly half the battleships were named after states (Bayern, Baden, Oldenburg, etc.), Prussian provinces (Schleswig-Holstein, Westfalen, Rheinland, Pommern, etc.), geographical regions of Germany (Ostfriesland, Thüringen) and one island (Helgoland). Most light cruisers were named after cities, a tradition that was continued by the ''Reichsmarine'' of the Weimar Republic and the Nazi Kriegsmarine using the names of light cruisers that had distinguished themselves and been sunk in action in World War I, i. e. Emden, Köln, Königsberg, Karlsruhe, Leipzig and Nürnberg.
* The Royal Navy of World War II contained "County" class heavy cruisers (which also included the Royal Australian Navy's Australia and Canberra), while two slightly smaller heavy cruisers (Exeter, York) and several light cruisers (including H.M.S. Belfast, now moored off the Tower Bridge in London) were named after cities. Another class of British light cruisers was named after dominions of the British Empire (Jamaica, Kenya, Ceylon, Newfoundland etc.). Then there was the "Town" class of 50 ex-U.S.N. four-stack destroyers and the "Hunt" class of destroyers, also "Bay", "Loch", and "River" class frigates, and "Castle" class corvettes.
* The heavy cruisers of the Royal Italian Navy of World War II were all named after provinces annexed by Italy at the end of World War I: Trento, Trieste, Zara, Pola etc.
* [[UsefulNotes/BritsWithBattleships The Royal Air Force]] named many of the bombers they flew in UsefulNotes/WorldWarII after cities (Lancaster, Beaufort, Wellington, etc.). Bombers purchased from the United States were accordingly named after ''American'' cities (Baltimore, Boston, etc.) One British bomber, the English Electric Canberra, was built under license in the US by Martin and sold to the US Air Force as the B-57 Canberra.
* The Ulsan-class frigates of [[UsefulNotes/{{SouthKoreanswithMarines}} ROK Navy]], named after the first ship from the class, ''Ulsan'', which itself is a name of a port city in UsefulNotes/{{South Korea}}, is this. The names include Ulsan, UsefulNotes/{{Seoul}} and UsefulNotes/{{Busan}} which are all names of cities, others being Chungnam, Kyeongbuk and Jeonnam, which are names of provinces.
* The daughters of Spanish radio personality El Cucuy are Francia, Italia, and Irlanda, all Spanish names of countries in Europe.
* The 1998 [[http://nameoftheyear.blogspot.com/ Name of the Year]] belonged to one L.A. St. Louis. Curiously, finishing in second the same year was Paris London.
* Street naming in UsefulNotes/TheUnitedStates:
** Many streets in US cities are named after states, most commonly the state it's in plus a few others (Pennsylvania Avenue is a common one).
*** The biggest one on this front is UsefulNotes/WashingtonDC, which has a street named for each state in the Union plus Puerto Rico. These generally criss-cross DC's grid of [[AlphabeticalThemeNaming lettered]] and [[NumericalThemeNaming numbered]] streets diagonally. The commonality of Pennsylvania Avenue nationally is possibly in large degree a reference to Pennsylvania Avenue in D.C., which is a major artery connecting the Capitol with TheWhiteHouse. (It may, however, also be an artifact of the large number of Pennsylvanians who settled in the states to the west of them early in the country's history.)
*** Another city to apply state-named streets is Atlantic City, UsefulNotes/NewJersey, which names most of its streets that run perpendicular to the sea after states. Streets parallel to the sea also have a location-based theme naming, with them being mostly named after bodies of water (with Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, and Baltic being the most important--peculiarly, Pacific is closer to the actual Atlantic Ocean than Atlantic Ave.; it also has the back doors of all the casinos on the Boardwalk, which AC treats as a proper street for address purposes). These streets are today world-famous on account of the original ''TabletopGame/{{Monopoly}}'' board (whose properties take their names from locations in A.C.).
*** In Santa Monica, the avenues running perpendicular to the sea were once all named after states, though Utah Avenue later became Broadway and Pennsylvania, Oregon and Nevada Avenues were absorbed into Olympic, Santa Monica and Wilshire Boulevards. The adjoining UsefulNotes/LosAngeles neighborhood of Sawtelle uses a similar but entirely inconsistent scheme of avenues named after states.
*** In UsefulNotes/{{Chicago}}'s River North neighborhood, streets running east to west are named after Midwestern states or Great Lakes. Here again the pattern is slightly obscured by renaming: Hubbard Street and Grand Avenue were formerly Michigan Street and Indiana Street, though this also avoids confusion with the major thoroughfare of Michigan Avenue and its South Side neighbor Indiana Avenue.
** Another common phenomenon, especially in state capitals and a state's largest city, is naming streets for counties in that state. For instance, in UsefulNotes/{{Philadelphia}}, 23 east-to-west streets in the northern part of the city (from Jefferson Street to Wyoming Avenue) are named after UsefulNotes/{{Pennsylvania}} counties, including all eighteen of the primary east-west thoroughfares between Susquehanna Avenue and Lycoming Street. An additional major street in that area, Cecil B. Moore Avenue, was originally named Columbia Avenue after (yes) Columbia County before being renamed after a local civil-rights activist,[[note]]Well, mostly; the portion of Columbia Avenue east of Front Street kept the Columbia Avenue name. (This may or may not have been because the neighborhoods that part ot the street runs through were majority-white.) However, as this section is only about half a mile long, it's usually forgotten.[[/note]] and a few other location-based streets are also found in the area (with Bristol Street probably being named for a major settlement in nearby Bucks County, and Ontario, Cayuga, and Rockland Streets possibly being named for counties in Upstate New York). Most of these counties are far away from Philadelphia; a major street, Erie Avenue, is named after the county at the literal opposite corner of the state.
*** Philadelphia has three additional streets that happen to share names with PA counties, being Lancaster, Delaware, and Washington Avenues. However Lancaster Avenue is so called because it is the modern form of the Lancaster Pike, the 18th-century toll road[[note]]Today mostly congruent with U.S. Route 30 between West Philly and Lancaster[[/note]] between Philadelphia and the city of Lancaster, PA, west of Philadelphia; Delaware Avenue is called that because it runs along the waterfront of the Delaware River; and Washington Avenue, being in South Philadelphia far from the county-themed streets, is almost certainly named directly after UsefulNotes/GeorgeWashington rather than for the county near UsefulNotes/{{Pittsburgh}} named after George Washington.
*** And true to American form, Philadelphia also has a Pennsylvania Avenue. This is a diagonal street running from the west end of Hamilton Street in the Callowhill neighborhood to the south end of 30th Street in the Brewerytown neighborhood. Confusingly, there was also historically a Pennsylvania ''Boulevard'' not far away in Center City, but it was later renamed John F. Kennedy Boulevard. [[note]]Around 2017, Goldberg's Peanut Chews--a local brand of peanut-caramel chocolates--ran an advertising campaign saying how they remembered when JFK Boulevard was Pennsylvania Boulevard, clearly targeting nostalgic Philadelphia oldheads.[[/note]]
** The streets of UsefulNotes/{{Boston}}'s Back Bay were named not only alphabetically but in reference to places in the British Isles, in a fit of Victorian-era Anglophilia. Some of these names are also used by New England towns, but this is coincidental. The South End has many logically east-west streets named after towns in Massachusetts.
** A series of east-west streets on Chicago's Far North Side are named for rail stations on the Pennsylvania Main Line--i.e. for towns that are today considered western suburbs of Philadelphia, and pretty fancy ones at that. The developer who laid out the neighborhood of Edgewater--the easternmost and oldest part of this section of Chicago--one John Lewis Cochran, was from Philadelphia, hence the names. The most important are probably Bryn Mawr Avenue (named after the town in Delaware and Montgomery Counties that houses the famous women's college) and Devon Avenue (named after a town in Chester County), the latter of which is the main street of Chicago's famous Little India. There are also a few others, e.g. Berwyn Avenue (named after another town in Chester County, near Devon; the street is only indirectly related to nearby Berwyn, IL, both being named after the one in PA[[note]]And more-or-less coincidentally; the developers of Berwyn, IL were not new arrivals from Philadelphia and mostly just knew that Berwyn, PA had a reputation for being pretty. They ''might'' have been inspired by Cochran's street name a few miles north, but if so it doesn't seem to be recorded.[[/note]]) and Ardmore Avenue (named after a major station on the Main Line, located like Bryn Mawr on the line between Delaware and Montgomery Counties).
* Much like the U.S., UsefulNotes/{{Brazil}} has a habit of geographic naming of streets. [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avenida_Brasil Brasil Avenue]] is common, and all sorts of regions are used to name streets: states (Minas Gerais, Paraná, Bahia), cities (Belo Horizonte, Curitiba) - UsefulNotes/SaoPaulo and Rio de Janeiro apply for both - or even foreign places (along with neighborhoods where all streets are named after foreign countriescities, São Paulo has a neighborhood named [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklin_Novo Brooklin]]).
* Three townships in Wayne County, UsefulNotes/{{Michigan}} west of UsefulNotes/{{Detroit}} were named "Pekin," "Nankin," and "Canton" after [[UsefulNotes/WhyMaoChangedHisName the old ways of spelling/pronouncing]] the Chinese cities of UsefulNotes/{{Beijing}}, Nanjing, and Guangzhou. Pekin and Nankin Townships were eventually dissolved into a lot of smaller municipalities, some of which are also named after foreign lands (e.g. Livonia, named after a region in the Baltic), while Canton has kept its name (although the pronunciation is different: it is pronounced "CAN-tun" not "can-TAWN").
* Technology companies often go with a theme for codenaming their products and several companies have used the names of places.
** [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Microsoft_codenames Microsoft]] and [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_codenames Intel]] tend to name their parts after locations in the US and Canada, usually after some vacationing spot. And among other places used for codenames, Microsoft even referenced their own ''VideoGame/{{Halo}}'' series (Threshold).
** Apple used to name Mac OS X versions after [[AnimalThemeNaming big cats]] before moving to locations in California (Mavericks (10.9), Yosemite (10.10), El Capitan (10.11), Sierra (10.12), High Sierra (10.13), Mojave (10.14), Catalina (10.15), Big Sur (11), Monterey (12)).
*** The color of the original iMac was called "Bondi blue" after Bondi Beach, Australia.
** AMD also used locations for a time, but later switched themes. One that deserves mention is [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opteron#Models the Opteron line]] using the racetracks or host cities of UsefulNotes/FormulaOne (the company sponsored Ferrari for a while).
* Allen Paulson, late CEO of private jet manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace, aviation entrepreneur, and [[UsefulNotes/HorseRacing Thoroughbred breeder]], named many of his racehorses after aviation checkpoints, with the most notable being Azeri and Cigar.
* Creator/RonHoward gave his children middle names based on where they'd been conceived; e.g. his eldest daughter Creator/BryceDallasHoward was conceived in Dallas, Texas.
* A lot of chemical elements were named after places they were found in, the places that the discoverer was born or raised in, or (for synthetic elements) the place they were first synthesized and/or the origin of the researchers who synthesized it:
** Named for source of first discovery:
*** Scandium (atomic number 21): Named for Scandinavia, as it was first isolated from ores found in Scandinavia
*** Hafnium (atomic number 72): Named for Hafnia, the Latin name of Copenhagen, the place the element was first identified (by a Dutchman and a Hungrian so it wasn't nationalism)
*** Yttrium (atomic number 39), Terbium (atomic number 65), Erbium (atomic number 68), and Ytterbium (atomic number 70) are all named for one place: The Ytterby mine near UsefulNotes/{{Stockholm}}. This is because the elements were all first extracted from ores taken from this mine.
** Named for origin of discoverer:
*** Gallium (atomic number 31): Named for Gallia, the old Latin name for what is now UsefulNotes/{{France}}, by its discoverer, the French chemist Paul Emile Lecoq de Boisbaudran
*** Germanium (atomic number 32): Named for UsefulNotes/{{Germany}} by its discoverer, the German chemist Clemens Winkler
*** Europium (atomic number 63): Named for UsefulNotes/{{Europe}} by its discoverer, the aforementioned Paul Lecoq de Boisbaudran (possibly trying to one-up Winkler)
*** Lutetium (atomic number 71): Named for Lutetia, the Latin name of UsefulNotes/{{Paris}}, by its discoverer, the French chemist Georges Urbain (a lifelong denizen of Paris)
*** Polonium (atomic number 84): Named for UsefulNotes/{{Poland}}, homeland of its co-discoverer, the Polish-French chemist UsefulNotes/MarieCurie
*** Francium (atomic number 87): Named for France by its discoverer, the French physicist Marguerite Perey
** Named for place of synthesis/origin of synthesizers:
*** Americium (atomic number 95): Named for the Americas, as the element was synthesized at the Lawrence Berkely National Laboratory in California
*** Berkelium (atomic number 97): Named for the city of Berkeley, California and the University of California, Berkeley (synthesized in the same lab and by the same team as Americium)
*** Californium (atomic number 98): Named for the state of UsefulNotes/{{California}} (synthesized in the same lab and by the same team as Americium and Berkelium)
*** Dubnium (atomic number 105): Named for the city of Dubna in Russia, home to the Soviet Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) that first sythesized the element
*** Darmstadtium (atomic number 110): Named for the city of Darmstadt, Germany, home to the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavniy Ion Research that first synthesized the element
*** Nihonium (atomic number 113): Named for UsefulNotes/{{Japan}}, as the element was synthesized at JINR Dubna with Japanese assistance
*** Moscovium (atomic number 115): Named not for the City of Moscow but for the [[UsefulNotes/TheGloriousFederalSubjects Moscow Oblast]] in which the city of Dubna lies--because yes, this one was synthesized at JINR Dubna too
*** Livermorium (atomic number 116): Named for the city of Livermore, California, home to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory that first synthesized the element
*** Tennessine (atomic number 118): Named for the state of UsefulNotes/{{Tennessee}}, home of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Vanderbilt University, which played a critical role in its first synthesis (which actually happened at, again, the JINR in Dubna)
* Someone at the KGB gave code names for American cities that included Carthage and Tyre (possibly for Washington, DC, and New York).
* The city of Asheville, North Carolina was once a highly popular vacation and retirement destination for Wall Street bankers, who often traveled there to avoid New York's brutal winters. In recognition of this fact, many major streets and landmarks in the city are named after streets and landmarks in New York. There's a Broadway Street, a Lexington Avenue, a Market Street, a Battery Park, and a Federal Alley (which may be named for Federal Hall).
* Some of the armies in the Napoleonic Wars were named by location. The more well known ones are probably the French Army of Portugal, so called because it was originally tasked with invading Portugal, and the Armies of Bohemia and Silesia on the side of the 6th Coalition.
* Ancient Chinese military had ranks/titles what some enthusiasts dub as "Directional Generals", which include general directions (front, rear, left, right) and cardinal directions (north, east, south, west). General directions-themed titles were usually related to the general's actual position in the military hierarchy while Cardinal directions-themed titles were usually related to where the general was stationed and what kind of job he was supposed to do there.
** General directions-themed titles include:
*** General of the Front (Qián Jiāngjūn 前将军)
*** General of the Rear (Hòu Jiāngjūn 後将军)
*** General of the Left (Zuŏ Jiāngjūn 左将军)
*** General of the Right (Yòu Jiāngjūn 右将军)
** Cardinal directions-themed titles include:
*** General who Conquers the North (Zhēngbĕi Jiāngjūn 征北将军)
*** General who Conquers the West (Zhēngxī Jiāngjūn 征西将军)
*** General who Conquers the East (Zhēngdōng Jiāngjūn 征東将军)
*** General who Conquers the South (Zhēngnán Jiāngjūn 征南将军)
*** General who Guards the North (Zhènbĕi Jiāngjūn 鎮北将军)
*** General who Guards the West (Zhènxī Jiāngjūn 鎮西将军)
*** General who Guards the East (Zhèndōng Jiāngjūn 鎮東将军)
*** General who Guards the South (Zhènnán Jiāngjūn 鎮南将军)
*** General who Calms the North (Ānbĕi Jiāngjūn 安北将军)
*** General who Calms the West (Ānxī Jiāngjūn 安西将军)
*** General who Calms the East (Āndōng Jiāngjūn 安東将军)
*** General who Calms the South (Ānnán Jiāngjūn 安南将军)
*** General who Subdues the North (Píngbĕi Jiāngjūn 平北将军)
*** General who Subdues the East (Píngdōng Jiāngjūn 平東将军)
*** General who Subdues the West (Píngxī Jiāngjūn 平西将军)
*** General who Subdues the South (Píngnán Jiāngjūn 平南将军)
* Some people (often famous) have [[HometownNickname last names named for where they are born]] i.e. Creator/LeonardoDaVinci; he is Leonardo of Vinci city.
