Two couples go out for a date together. This setup has a lot of uses, but the number one use is to compare one relationship to the other. Number two use: bonding between the ladies. If they get along, chances are good the foursome will be friends for a long time. If they don't ... cue the fireworks.

Not to be confused with TwoTimerDate.

* Happens early on Manga/LovelyComplex too.

* The four main characters in Manga/TonariNoKashiwagiSan go out on a double date to an amusement park. Only Kotone actually fails to realise it's a date at all.
* Subverted in the seventh chapter of Manga/AsteroidInLove, animated in the third episode. Mira thinks this is happening not long after she declares her shopping trip with Ao a date, when they notice Moe and Mai were together and even buying ice creams. Turns out Moe and Mai are checking out an enclave of a neighbouring city in their own.

* This VideoGame/ToukenRanbu doujin's second half. It gets ruined hilariously with three of the participants end up too busy dispelling evil spirits while Mikazuki sits by watching on in utter confusion.
-->Mikazuki: [thinking] Define date please.
* In the Anime/YuGiOh fanfic Chaos Effect, after seeing that Yugi's plan to have the Spirit of the Millennium Puzzle spend the day with Tea is just an attempt to date her by proxy without admitting it, Edwin doesn't just force him to admit it but also decides that he and Mai (whom he's been dating since Duelist Kingdom) will tag along to help keep things from getting too awkward for the younger pair.
* In Fanfic/AvengersInfiniteWars Steve & Aayla and Bucky & Celeste had it in chapter 107, before the final battle against Ultron, way more successful than one in Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger
** Anakin Skywalker & his secret wife Padmé Amidala too had one with Thor Odinson & his girlfriend Jane Foster (Padmé's IdenticalStranger).
* Webcomic/NaruHinaChronicles:
** After learning that Sasuke and Sakura will have their first date together, Naruto suggests that he should go get Hinata so they can have a double date together. His two friends decline, preferring to have their first date just the two of them alone.
** Over a year later, the two couples do have a double date after Naruto returns to Konoha following a mission where he was presumed to be KIA. It begins with Sasuke and Sakura joining Naruto and Hinata for some lunch at Ichiraku. Then, after Naruto and Sakura have to go to the hospital for a check-up, the four of them go watch a chick flick at a movie theater. Both Hinata and Sakura end up enjoying the movie, while Naruto ends up falling asleep and Sasuke has a painfully bored look while watching it.

* Film/Conjoined: Stanley and Alina decide to have one with Alisa and Jerry to try and hook the latter two up. However, during the date, Alisa has a little too much wine and implies that Jerry likes wearing dresses, which annoys him. He decides to leave, and insults Alisa on the way out, prompting her to lunge at him, from which she's held back by Alina.
* The plot of Film/DrinkingBuddies is set off by a cabin trip that turns out to be one of these. During the trip, Jill and Chris (Alice and Carlos, respectively) wind up kissing, while the UST between their actual paramours Luke and Kate is the primary source of drama throughout the movie.
* Film/Goodfellas: Tommy convinces Henry to go on a double date with him and two Jewish girls because the one he's interested in won't go out with an Italian unless she can bring her friend along as an escort. Henry's reluctance is palpable, which riles up some BelligerentSexualTension between him and his own date, eventually leading them to marry.
* In Film/GoodBurger, Ed goes on a mini golf date with a gorgeous Mondo Burger employee named Roxanne, while Dexter brings Monique, a co-worker he has a crush on. Roxanne tries to HoneyTrap Ed into revealing his secret sauce recipe, but ends up on the receiving end of numerous AmusingInjuries and angrily resigns from Mondo Burger the next day.
* Film/Heathers: Heather [=McNamara=] convinces Veronica to go on a double date with herself, Ram, and Kurt. It ends badly.
* The movie Film/KeepingTheFaith, although one of the couples on the double date are in fact the other character's best friends, only pretending to be on a date, and only there for moral support. Bonus points for one of the best friends being a priest.
* Film/WhenHarryMetSally: Harry and Sally go on dates with Bob and Dana. In spite of the fact that Harry was supposedly being set up for Dana and Sally with Bob, Bob and Dana really hit it off well at the date and hail a cab together, leaving an awkward Harry and Sally behind.
* Film/TheWrongCheerleader: After Becky makes the cheerleading team her friend Jen surprises her by setting one up at a pizza restaurant. One couple is Jen and her boyfriend Chris, who get along but have the occasional disagreement. The other pairing is Becky and Rob who genuinely like one another at first. Unfortunately it all goes downhill from there once it becomes apparent Rob has a psycho stalker complex.

* Series/SeventhHeaven: Mary wants to go out with Robbie but her parents forbid it because they don't trust him. She asks if she can go out if it is a double date with Robbie's brother and her own sister Lucy also present. Her parents agree to that, and she drags along an unmotivated Lucy, while Robbie does the same with his brother. Ironically, Lucy and Robbie's brother turn out to like each other, and at the end of the date both couples are making out with each other next to each other.
* On one episode of Series/TheBradyBunch, Greg's GirlOfTheWeek agrees to go out with him only if he can find a date for her out-of-town visiting cousin. However, Greg can't convince any of his friends to double-date with him because, last time anyone saw her, the cousin had pigtails and braces. So Greg convinces Peter to do it (with difficulty), and he has Peter wear a bad fake moustache to make him look older. Of course, 1. the cousin has lost the pigtails and braces and is now super hot (Greg clearly thinks she's hotter than his own date), and 2. the two girls see right through Peter's PaperThinDisguise. So they conspire to both ignore Greg and give all their attention to Peter.
* Series/2009 does this in "The Third Man"; though he and Beckett are more interested in talking about the case at hand than each other, it does end up the same: They step out to solve the case, and their dates hook up.
* The Series/Cheers episodes "Save the Last Dance For Me" and "Diane's Perfect Date".
* Series/Friends: Phoebe and Joey decide to set each other up with blind dates on a double date. Joey completely forgets until Phoebe mentions she's picked a girl for him. Not having any single guy friends Joey randomly picks a guy in the coffee house and convinces him to pretend they're friends. Phoebe quickly sees through the ruse and is furious, but Mike actually really liked her and asks her for a second date. Despite the awkward start to their relationship Phoebe and Mike eventually get married during the final season with Joey officiating the ceremony.
* Series/MyLeftNut: Mick and Tommy go on a double date with Rachael and Siobhan. Later Siobhan reveals she set it up because Rachael was too chicken to ask Mick on her own.
* The Series/NedsDeclassifiedSchoolSurvivalGuide episode "Guide to: Double Dating" features Ned and Suzy going to Around the World Night at school with Moze and Jock Goldman.
* Happens on Series/NoahsArc, with Dre (who is with Noah's ex Wade) inviting Noah over for dinner. Unbeknownst to Noah, this is to set him up with Dre's friend Quincy. Though there's clear UnresolvedSexualTension between Wade and Noah, in later episodes Noah actually does start to fall for Quincy.
* Series/SchittsCreek: Alexis Rose uses a decades-old magazine quiz to needle her brother David about his relationship with Patrick becoming routine. She brags that her own relationship with Ted is still hot in part because of their adventure dates. David talks Patrick into double dating with Alexis and Ted on an aerial rope course in a nearby park. David is afraid of heights, and Patrick would much rather be working at their store and HilarityEnsues. Eventually, a wobbly David admits that he loves how normal and routine his relationship with Patrick is, and they share an aerial kiss.
* Series/Smallville: "Escape" has an accidental and really awkward one with Lois/Clark and Chloe/Oliver, since Lois and Clark had no idea that Chloe and Ollie were seeing one another...before running into them wearing bathrobes together when they accidentally book the same bed and breakfast. The next morning, the four of them end up sitting a the breakfast table, still looking hilariously awkward. Ollie amusingly tried to break the tension: "Look... little jellies."

* The song "Tokyo Summer Session" by Music/HoneyWorks features a triple date, where the three main couples go to watch a fireworks festival. They didn't actually go together, and the pairs didn't meet up until the very end, but the entire song does showcase the different dynamics between the couples -- from Natsuki and Yuu's colourful but strong relationship, Sota and Akari's slowly but surely budding romance, and the UST between Mio and Haruki that's still hindering the progress of their relationship.

* Radio/OurMissBrooks: A variation on the trope in "The Frog". Miss Brooks is tired of Mr. Boynton taking her to the zoo on the dates. In an desperate effort to move their dates, Miss Brooks gets a pet female frog to date Mr. Boynton's pet frog Mcdougall. The idea is for Miss Brooks and Mr. Boynton to double date with their pet frogs. It turns into a very noisy triple date, when Mr. Boynton brings a tomcat to date Mrs. Davis' lovelorn female cat Minerva.

* Creator/WilliamShakespeare's Theatre/AMidsummerNightsDream makes it one of the oldest in the book. It can be even seen even as a triple date (counting Titania+Oberon).

* VideoGame/RhythmHeaven Fever has a mini game called Double Date, set at a schoolyard. One couple is human, and the other is a pair of weasels. To keep everyone happy, the player needs to kick away stray sports balls that are headed for the weasel couple.

* Webcomic/ElGoonishShive: Tedd and Grace with Ellen and Nanase. This led to Tedd and Ellen finally making progress in their friendship, though they may disagree on whether it's a preexisting friendship or a new one, due to Ellen being an OppositeSexClone of Tedd's best friend Elliot... it's complicated.
* In Webcomic/KevinAndKell, post-divorce Martha and George go through a period of taking dates to the same restaurant at the same time. At least once, this results in their dates leaving with each other while George and Martha sulk.
* Webcomic/ToLoveYourEnemy: Yeonhee and Yikyung go on a double date with Yeonhee's friend Yeonsu and her sleazy boyfriend, who hits on Yeonhee at every opportunity. After Yeonsu realizes this, she has no qualms dumping him at the end of the night.
* Webcomic/MoringMarkTOHComics: Multiple comics show that Luz and Amity often go on double dates in the human realm with Vee and Masha.
* In Webcomic/QuestionableContent, Steve's first date with Ellen is a double with Marten and Dora (Steve's idea).

* WesternAnimation/AmericanDad: In "Cops and Roger", the secondary plot of the episode involves Hayley and Reginald the koala sorting out their feelings for each other. They try going on a double date with Rhonda (whom Reginald dates) and Iain (whom Hayley dates), but even then can't stop flirting with each other, much to their dates' chagrin.
* WesternAnimation/BobsBurgers:
** In "Weekend At Mort's", Bob and Linda go on a double date with Mort the Mortician and a woman he met online.
** In "The Trouble With Doubles", Bob and Linda once again go on a double date, this time with a couple they end up unable to stand.
* WesternAnimation/Futurama.
** Amy and Kif with Zapp and Leela in "Amazon Women in the Mood", though Leela only came as a favor to Amy, since she hates Zapp.
** Depicted above is from "The Butterjunk Effect", where Amy and Kif double date with Fry and Leela.
** In "Put Your Head On My Shoulders" with Amy and her new flame and an old woman who Bender picked out for Fry from his matchmaking business. It should be noted that Fry and Amy were only double dating because Fry's head was currently attached to Amy's neck.
* WesternAnimation/KimPossible and Ron double dated with Shego and Mr. Barkin. Barkin and the kids felt awkward together, so the double date was a disaster.
