7Crunk is a subgenre of SouthernRap that could be seen as something of a SpiritualSuccessor to MiamiBass, in addition to taking influence from New Orleans bounce and Memphis horrorcore. Created by Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz and Music/ThreeSixMafia in TheNineties and further codified in the early 2000s by the former, crunk (a portmanteau of crazy and drunk) quickly rose to the forefront of hip-hop. Crunk is generally loud, with danceable beats being the primary focus and lyrics taking a back seat. Songs often take place InDaClub, which is also where crunk music is frequently played, along with at parties, raves and other, similar venues. Most crunk music comes from UsefulNotes/Atlanta, Georgia.
8
9Crunk typically features repetitive, bass-heavy instrumentals, chanted choruses, lots and lots of ClusterFBomb and NWordPrivileges (to the point where every other word can be a curse word), and simplistic and grammatically inaccurate lyrics about the club, casual sex, the club, using and dealing drugs, the club, partying, the club, killing people, the club, criminal activity and girls' butts. TrapMusic is a notable derivative, as was snap (a LighterAndSofter derivative that focused on being more hook-oriented and danceable and derived most of its popularity from ringtone sales; the genre essentially died the minute that smartphones started taking over the mobile market).
