In the West, gay and lesbian romances aimed at UsefulNotes/LGBT readers have existed as a publishing niche since the 1950s, but are still relatively obscure (and SturgeonsLaw and TheTheoremOfNarrowInterests applies to what can be found). Most broadly-known Western same-sex and LGBT romances are aimed at general audiences and have a tendency to be tragic. Another Western genre, M/M romance, features male love interests but is written primarily by women for women and has a tendency to go to the Escapism opposite extreme.

In Japanese media, these have more well-defined genre expectations and usually fall into the YaoiGenre (m/m romance for a female audience), Bara (m/m romance for gay/bi men), and YuriGenre (f/f romance generally, although there is a separation between works for men, for women in general, and for lesbians in specific).

They early on develop a deep sense of kinship and mutual understanding, and by the end of the series, it's revealed that they have romantic feelings for each other. Another example is Margot Verger and Alana Bloom; both queer women, they fall for each and have married by the end of the series, along with Alana having their child.
* Series/TheHauntingOfBlyManor: It's revealed that is a lesbian and a big chunk of the series focuses on her accepting her sexuality and falling in love with . 477

* "Seeing Other People" by Music/BelleAndSebastian: the male narrator is bitter about being in a relationship with another boy who's either closeted or simply experimenting:
-->You're going to have to change\
Or you're going to have to go with girls
* Billy Brown is very clearly about a bisexual man. Kinda hard to deny considering it talks about a man who leaves his wife for a man, then cheats on him with a woman, then cheats on her with another man. Music/Mika himself is gay, but he has said that "Billy Brown" is not about his own life.
* Kate Bush's Lionheart: "Kashka from Baghdad" revolves around the title character's romance with another man.
* Music/CircusP's "Lie" and "I(Love)" are both love songs from a woman to another woman.
* Gay Pirates by Music/CosmoJarvis, which is about a doomed romance between (you guessed it) two guys on a pirate ship.
* Music/TheDecemberists:
** "On The Bus Mall" by Music/TheDecemberists tells the story of two "kings among runaways" — teenage boys who run away from home, make ends meet via prostitution, and "fuse like a family" on their days off.
** Music/TheDecemberists' "The Soldiering Life" is apparently about a relationship between two soldiers:
-->"But you\
My brother in arms\
I'd rather I'd lose my limbs than let you come to harm"
* Even Music/ElvisPresley himself got in on the act back in 1957: "Number forty-seven said to number three / You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see / I sure would be delighted with your company / Come on and do the jailhouse rock with me!" When Music/Queen would cover the King, this was one of only two verses they sang.
* "Michael" by Music/FranzFerdinand is a simple song about a guy wanting to dance and make out with a hot guy he sees at a club.
* Girl in red's "i wanna be your girlfriend" is ambiguous on whether Hannah, the girl being sung about, is interested in girls or not. The singer does pine after her, but she won't tell her friend.
* Music/Halsey has a few songs, such as "Strangers", casually about being in love with women.
* Music/HayleyKiyoko has a number of songs about women liking women, such as "Girls Like Girls", "Pretty Girl", and "Sleepover".
* "I Kissed A Girl" (completely unrelated to the Music/KatyPerry song) by Jill Sobule is about a woman who is kissed by a woman for the first time.
* "Papa Was a Rodeo" by Music/TheMagneticFields chronicles what promises two be a one-night stand between two men with neglectful parents...55 years later, they are still together.
* Music/NeutralMilkHotel's "Song Against Sex" details a tryst the male narrator has with an older man (and then spirals into the realization that sex can often be depressing, irresponsible and unfulfilling).
-->And he said...Oh boy you are so pretty / enough to wrap tight in rice-paper string.
-->And when I finally kissed him / the whole world began to ring
* "Fem in a Black Leather Jacket" (among others) by Music/PansyDivision.
* Olivia Meower's "POLAROID HEART" is about how the singer compares herself to her crush's polariod photo of her, saying that she can do whatever she wants to her because the singer loves her so much.
* OSTER project's "Ladies First" is about two girls in love, who have to keep their relationship secret due to the stigma against homosexual relationships.
* "Goddess" by S. J. Tucker is a SillyLoveSong about a woman in love with a neighbor. She doesn't know how to approach the woman or even if the woman notices her. The song ends on an ambiguous note whether the one being sung about is straight or not.
* Queerness has been a major force in the music of Music/TheSmiths, as well as Music/Morrissey's solo career, ever since "This Charming Man", confirmed by Morrissey to be about the ins-and-outs of closeted sexual interactions, came out back in the early eighties. Morrissey himself has confirmed he's attracted to people regardless of gender, and his solo albums reflect that: his first compilation, Bona Drag, takes its title from a Polari slang phrase.
* Music/StudioKillers is a 'fictional' band with a bisexual female singer. Cherry has quite a few songs about feelings for women, such as "Jenny" being about her wanting to date her best friend.
* According to WordOfGod, Music/Suede's "Animal Nitrate" is about a violent sexual relationship between two male drug addicts.
* The two (male) friends at the center of "Diplomat's Son" by Music/VampireWeekend get high together and then have sex; too bad one of them is gone come morning.
* "Daisy" by Zedd is about a lesbian's unrequited love for a straight woman.
* Zolita hae a number of songs about lesbian romances, such as "Explosions" and "Hurt Me Harder".

* Theatre/LoveInHateNation focuses on how two lesbians in a 1960's juvenile hall fall for each other despite the prejudices of the time.

* Theatre/ThrillMe is based on the Leopold and Loeb case, and so Nathan and Richard are in a sexual relationship. Whether it's romantic is a matter of opinion.
