!!Tropes present in this work:
%% * BadassBookworm: Mary learned ship navigation as a hobby.
%% * BasedOnATrueStory: Pretty close to history interestingly enough.
* TheCaptain: Joshua is a captain in name and his wife Mary is a captain in practice. He's out of commission and she learned ship navigation as a hobby. Commanding a ship and bringing around Cape Horn is no easy feat for anyone, but Mary deals with it just fine.
%% * TheCaretaker: Mary to Joshua
%% * CourtlyLove: Mr Hare the second mate has this toward Mary, but nothing is done about it.
%% * DeliberateValuesDissonance: Among other things Mary acts like a proper ninteenth century lady.
* Determinator: Mary's force of will brings the crew to their destination.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: The Captain's Wife is about a ship captain's wife.
%% * HappilyMarried: Joshua and Mary.
* TheProtagonist: Mary Ann Patten; the book is narrated from her perspective.
* HiddenDepths: Few guessed Mary knows how to navigate or handle a first mate who doesn't want to follow her lead.
%% * HonourBeforeReason: This is why they finish the voyage instead of turning back.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Hare has UnresolvedSexualTension with Mary but lets her be happy with her husband.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Mary is ready and willing to take command.
* OfficerAndAGentleman: Joshua is a ship captain and a great man.
%% * ThePowerOfLove: Which in this case was enough to get the ship round the Horn.
* PregnantBadass: While commanding a ship and controlling a power hungry first mate, Mary is pregnant.
* TheSmartGuy: Mary who does her job because she can navigate a ship.
%% * TeamDad: Joshua for his crew.
%% * TeamMom: Mary for the same crew once it's hers.
%% * UndyingLoyalty: Mary to Joshua; she refused to give up on him despite the circumstances.
%%
%% What are those mysterious circumstances?
%%
%% * WhatYouAreInTheDark: Mary and Hare might have gotten away with betraying Joshua while he was helpless. They didn't.
%% * WillTheyOrWontThey: Mary and Hare. They won't. It's not done. IGaveMyWord For obvious reasons.
%% * YouAreInCommandNow: Mary becomes the captain once the previous captain is unable to command.
%%
%% This needs more explanation. How come a woman is put in charge? She couldn't have been an officer of the Navy at that time.
%%
%% * WoodenShipsAndIronMen
