1	Back in the days of old school rap, HipHop was often used as part of someone who is TotallyRadical. With the rise of popularity of hardcore hip-hop and the ''far more aggressive'' gangsta rap, rap is now used as a motif for anything related to the darker aspects of street life. If you hear hip hop in the soundtrack, you can be sure that everything is taking place on the wrong side of the law.

3	"Conscious" hip hop artists such as Mos Def, Music/ATribeCalledQuest, or Common may be used in a soundtrack to give an urban-yet-indie feel.

22	* Spoofed in ''Series/ATouchOfCloth'' in the "Undercover Cloth" arc. Jack goes into a BadGuyBar and pounding hip-hop starts playing, but the lyrics [[LiteralMusicVideo literally describe what the characters are doing]].
23	* In ''Fanfic/AintNoGrave'', Bucky Barnes, despite being a white guy who was born nearly a hundred years ago, develops a fondness for gangsta rap. He is a tough guy with a DarkAndTroubledPast so it fits thematically, even if it is amusingly incongruous when Captain America's buddy who grew up during Prohibition starts making Wu-Tang Clan references.
24	* ''Franchise/TheDynamiteTwinsAndFriends'' is heavily influenced by hip-hop and [[GenericGraffiti graffiti]]. Especially from the 80s and 90s.
