Context Fridge / WITCH

Go To

!!FridgeBrilliance
* In "Z is for Zenith", I was already given a moment to swoon over [[Creator/JasonMarsden Matt]]'s sexy, enraged delivery of "Why can't they come back?!" when the girls have transformed into their elemental forms. Upon further consideration though, I realized that among other things, Matt's rage was entirely justified not only because his beloved girlfriend was turned into a corporeal mass of lightning along with her friends, but because the entire situation happened at Nerissa's suggestion. From her fantasy inside the crystal, it was clear she'd intended to once again use people to further her plans. Matt, who'd already been made a pawn in her schemes, was probably ready to tear the bitch a new one. Nerissa was pretty lucky she ended up trapped in that crystal after all.
* In the cartoon Phobos fell for Will's plan to make him lose the powers taken from Nerissa by having him swear on the Heart of Kandrakar to not use them for himself and then trick him into walking to Kandrakar in arms, but Cedric saw through it since the beginning. I was just surprised as anyone that Cedric had deduced ''exactly'' what Will's plan was, but then I realized: it's based on an oath. Something that Cedric is an expert of, being the resident ConsummateLiar (the comic book even called him 'The Prince of Lies' on more than one occasion) and a [[WickedCultured book lover]] and oaths are based on the words he's a master of. ''Of course'' he knew exactly what would happen if Phobos swore on that oath!
** Phobos took a few moments before swearing the oath. He was ''relying on Cedric'' to warn him if there was any danger. Too bad that Cedric was already plotting against him...
* It is somewhat fitting that the redhead Will Vandom is the leader of a group called WITCH. Back in the middle ages, redheads were often considered witches.
* Why didn't Cornelia object to Will being Elyon's regent in "Q is for Quarry"? I was expecting her to say she was best suited because she was Elyon' s best friend. But, she made no remark or sarcastic expression at all. Why? Because she remembered her temporary power upgrade in "N is for Narcissist". She didn't say anything because she knew that it would probably sound hypocritical. And she was also hoping that Will might've also remembered the incident.
* The Oracle might choose a Guardian based on their magical lineage based on the five elements. Hay Lin is the granddaughter of the previous Air Guardian and Cornelia is the [[spoiler: older sister of the Heart of Earth.]]
* Cartoon-verse: the reveal in ''O is for Obedience'' that [[spoiler: Julian and the Mage were lovers who had a son (Caleb) together, and then that the Mage was actually Nerissa in disguise.]]
** It began in ''F is for Facades'', when the Mage tells Julian:
--> '''Mage:''' He has a fine father.\
'''Julian:''' And a fine mother as well.\
''*cue the two of them smiling at each other*''
** And then, in ''N is for Narcissist'', when Luba reveals that the Mage was not the Mage at all, there is a close-up to Julian's downcast face.
** Nerissa also locks [[spoiler: Caleb]] in a lightning cage during the fight in "K is for Knowledge." [[spoiler: She was trying to keep him safe.]]
** In "A is for Anonymous," Caleb specifically thanks [[spoiler: Trill]] for her help with the rebellion. [[spoiler: Trill was another of Nerissa's identities.]]
* Cartoon-verse: Will was one that gave Napoleon (the Hale's pet cat) to Lillian. A few episodes later, it was revealed that [[spoiler: Lillian is the Heart of Earth and Napoleon is her {{Familiar}}. Will, the leader of WITCH brought Naploen to Lillian, who is technically a witch herself.]]
* In "J is for Jewel", Phobos referred to Hay Lin as the "weakest link". At first I though he was just being his usual {{Jerkass}} self and was attempting to [[BreakTheCutie crush Hay Lin's spirits]], but then I later on realized what he meant: Hay Lin is the Guardian of Air, and the element of air is considered the weakest of all five elements. So, that's what Phobos actually meant.
** It's true that Air is less solid than Water and Earth and not as energetic/flashy as Fire and Energy, but it can be even more devastating in real life (hurricanes, tornadoes, even high winds can destroy buildings). Phobos didn't think that through and most people wouldn't, plus it shows that Phobos still underestimates his opponent when he ''thinks'' he has the advantage, nicely setting up [[spoiler: how Will tricks him during the last part of season two]]. A good comparison is how Airbending in ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' and ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra'' is shown to be extremely destructive when not wielded by the pacifistic Air Nomads, especially in season 3 of LOK. Imagine how easily Hay Lin could have [[spoiler: pulled the air out of Phobos' lungs]] like [[spoiler: Zaheer]] did? It's good thing she ''is'' a sweetheart like Aang was.
* At the end of the comic book, the Guardians receives another power up that includes increases senses: Will can see everything she wants, Hay Lin can hear anything, etc. Thing is, these ''are the same power of the Oracle'' divided among them.
* At face value the cartoon doesn't have the subplot about Will fearing to become like Nerissa. Then I remembered that at the end of the second season she proves herself a capable {{Chessmaster}} (that is, ''Nerissa's greatest strength''), but, differently from her, she enlists her friends' help for her manipulations.. That's why the cartoon lacks the subplot: Will got over that fear faster than in the comics, as her friendship with the other Guardians was deep enough she trusts them to stop her, while in the comic book she couldn't bring herself to trust them so much until with her confrontation with [[spoiler: [[GrandTheftMe Phobos in Endarno's body]]]] in the fourth story arc.
* In the fourth arc of the comics [[spoiler: Phobos]] showed Will a future where her friends eventually left her because they were sick of hanging out with her. That was exactly what happened with her friends in Fadden Hills so that would be her biggest fear.
* The ages of W.I.T.C.H. parallels the strength of their element: Will is the oldest and has the most powerful element. Cornelia is the second oldest and thus has the second most powerful element. Vice-versa with Irma, Taranee, and Hay Lin.
** Taranee, Irma and Hay Lin match up well with their powers based on personality. Taranee is fairly timid and initially terrified of her power, Fire, which can be the most destructive element in the wrong hands. Irma lets her surroundings shape her but always keeps a core of her true self, much like how water changes shape based on its container but keeps its volume regardless. The energetic and imaginative Hay Lin is able to use her Air/Wind powers to their fullest.
** To be honest, though, the ages of the girls are interchangeable. Whoever said that from oldest to youngest is W-C-I-T-H, that's the first time I've heard someone say that. From oldest to youngest in the Comics it's C-W-I-T-H. In the Cartoon, from oldest to youngest it's C-I-T-W-H.
*** In the comics, we have the actual birthdays of the characters(but not necessarily their birthyear), and considering Will is born in January and also in the same class as Cornelia who's born in May and a full school year ahead of the others, she's the oldest. Will(January 19) and Cornelia(May 10) are likely born the same year, Irma (March 13), Taranee (March 23) and Hay Lin (June 4) are born the year after. Comic order should be W-C-I-T-H.
** Incorrect. In the cartoon, their ages aren't established too much, but it's generally assumed to still be C-W-I-T-H. Cornelia and Will are both a year older than the other girls, that's why they are in a different class (with Matt and Elyon) and Will comments in season 2 that Taranee can do her math work despite not being in the 8th grade like Will is.
*** [[MetaphoricallyTrue That depends on your point of view or which source you believe.]] In a first season episode, Hay Lin is said to be the only one who's still 12. A few episodes earlier, Will just turned 13. That would hint at the TV show's order being C-I-T-W-H.
** [[https://witchmagic.wordpress.com/w-i-t-c-h/the-guardians/will-vandom/ This]] [[https://witchmagic.wordpress.com/w-i-t-c-h/the-guardians/irma-lair/ website]] [[https://witchmagic.wordpress.com/w-i-t-c-h/the-guardians/taranee-cook/ only]] [[https://witchmagic.wordpress.com/w-i-t-c-h/the-guardians/cornelia-hale/ muddles]] [[https://witchmagic.wordpress.com/w-i-t-c-h/the-guardians/hay-lin/ matters]] ''even'' more. It states that the girls' ages are literally in the order in which they are spelled - in other words, W-I-T-C-H. Seriously I think we should just let people make up their own interpretations on the girls' ages.
* In the comic, Cornelia at first isn't too willing to accept Will's leadership, and made a few attempts at taking over. Before they became the Guardians of Kandrakar, the group's leader was Cornelia herself, and Will was literally the last one arrived (Taranee had arrived at the school the previous day).
* On the Guardian outfits:
** The original Guardian outfits of both W.I.T.C.H. and C.H.Y.K.N. are [[CustomUniformOfSexy sexy]] and show the midriff, while the outfits of the ancient human generation of Guardians (only shown in a flashback]] are feminine ''[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanfu hanfu]]''. Both W.I.T.C.H. and C.H.Y.K.N. are American teenagers of the 20th century (late 20th for W.I.T.C.H., mid 20th for C.H.Y.K.N.), they'd want something sexy and somewhat rebellious, while the ancient human generation were Chinese teens or women of thousands of years ago, and dressed as such.
** By the time of the New Power saga the outfits of W.I.T.C.H. changed because ''they'' changed, and thus evolved with them.
** Taranee's New Power outfit is the only one that still shows the midriff. While the others (and especially Will) have outgrown their rebellious phase by the New Power saga, Taranee only does ''during'' the saga, after she got the new outfit (and her hair got crazier).
** Hay Lin's of Chinese descent like the ancient human Guardians, but her outfits resemble the UsefulNotes/{{Qipao}} while the ancient Guardians wore ''hanfu''. The ''hanfu'' is the traditional Han Chinese wear, and the feminine version was supplanted by the qipao (of Manchu origin) only in the 20th century.
** Yan Lin's Guardian outfit is modeled on the ''[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangzhuang tangzhuang]]''-pants outfit, that was originally man wear but has since grown to be worn by both genders. Back in her day, women in China were still relatively kept in traditional roles, so to fight (a traditional man's role) she gets in "men"'s clothes.
** Hay Lin's New Power outfit is a Grade S ZettaiRyouiki. She's also an {{otaku}}. The question is: how long did it take her to notice?
* In ''J is for Jewel'', Trill shows Elyon "memories" of her parents Weira and Zaden. However, in these memories, Weira has blonde hair instead of the red she has both in the comics and in the flashback from ''The Stone of Threbe''. This could be considered an error, until you realise Trill is Nerissa and, as such, has never actually met Queen Weira. She gave her blonde hair in the falsely constructed memory because she assumed she was blonde from Phobos and Elyon's hair colour.
* We see twice in the comics that Mr. Lin's hobby is bird-watching. That's a normal hobby, but then I remembered his mother was the former Guardian of Air! It seems he inherited something from her even if it wasn't powers.
* Cornelia and Caleb's romance seems like an outright {{Deconstruction}} of the typical love stories found in Disney movies. They fall in love with one another in their dreams, and right after meeting each other they're already head over heels for one another. It's only after Caleb gets to see the true, fourteen year old Cornelia that he starts to have doubts, and the relationship falls apart. Seems like a commentary against other couples that get together just based on looks alone, and never question their love.
** Interestingly, that would explain why the show version of Caleb and Cornelia have a stronger relationship than their original comic versions. Caleb spends more time on Earth and around the real Cornelia (in the physical and WartsAndAll sense) so they have to work out things like a real couple would, especially in season two during their make-it-or-break moment.
* There are a lot of ways W.I.T.C.H. is like their C.H.Y.K.N. counterparts and how the two groups act like foils to each other. Like Nerissa, Will can be extremely possessive, which causes her to cheat at the swim meet when she feels Mandy is threatening her relationship with Matt. And like Nerissa, Will can be quite the manipulator. But unlike Nerissa, as is pointed out further up on this page, Will enlists her friends' help. Nerissa broke her team up while Will keeps hers together. As for the Water Guardians, we don't see too much of Cassidy's personality but it's implied she's playful and sarcastic like Irma. These two represent the opposite sides of water; Cassidy represents the peaceful side, as she states she doesn't hold a grudge against Nerissa and just wants to rest in peace. Irma represents water's more turbulent side, as she's always clashing with and sometimes poking fun at Cornelia and calling her Corny even though the other girl clearly doesn't like it. For the Fire Guardians, Taranee has quite a rebellious streak, going so far as to temporarily quit the team. Halinor also has a rebellious streak, as she (and Kadma) voices her displeasure at the Oracle's decision and essentially rebels against him. However, while Taranee rejoins the team, Halinor doesn't, and with Kadma (in the comic) she breaks off contact with Yan Lin. For the Earth Guardians, both of them are really stubborn and prideful. They also tend to push people away when they're upset in the comics, as we see when Caleb gets turned into a flower and Cornelia refuses to talk to her friends or let them comfort her. However, once he is turned back Cornelia gladly rejoins the team. Kadma, on the other hand, breaks off contact with Yan Lin and when Will and Taranee come to her for information, refuses to help them more than necessary and doesn't want anything more to do with Kandrakar. As for the Lins, both of them are the most positive members of their groups, with Hay Lin always being cheerful and with Yan Lin not letting the past make her a bitter old woman like Kadma.
* It seems incredibly weird that NarniaTime and ComicBookTime is in such effect - especially with the amount of WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld in the second arc. Exactly why would Nerissa take so long to try and attack the girls? Actually, when she attempts to kill the girls in their dreams, she has every reason to play the long game with them. She's ''intentionally'' wearing the girls down mentally with nightmares so that they'll be easier pickings for her. That's not a bad idea at all.
** This was stated openly in the comic, where she attacks them in their dreams and the girls realize quickly what's happening and that if it goes on longer they'll be too weak to fight. Hence them bringing the fight to her.
* In the cartoon the only reason Nerissa is a threat is that the Mage, for some reason, decided to free and try to redeem Nerissa, leaving unexplained why she did it or even ''how'' she managed it. This was actually explained in advance in season one, by stating she had created the Star of Threbe by using the ''Heart of Kandrakar'': the Mage was actually the Keeper before Nerissa, and given the character similarities between Guardians of a certain element she likely felt she could understand and redeem Nerissa (and possibly felt guilt at what happened her if she had trained C.H.Y.K.N. like Yan Lin did with W.I.T.C.H.), and could free her because, as the previous Keeper, knew how her bonds worked.
* In "The Mudslugs", the Heart of Kandrakar turns on a radio tower, allowing Will to broadcast an apology and cry for help to Cornelia. In the second season, Will gains the power of [[ElementNumberFive Quintessence]], which grants her control over [[ShockAndAwe electricity]] and the ability to [[{{Technopath}} communicate with machines]]. What seemed like a DeusExMachina in one episode turns out to be foreshadowing of what Will is truly capable of.
* "The Underwater Mines" reveals that Cornelia can't swim and is afraid of drowning. This is rather fitting since Irma, the Guardian of Water, is the Guardian whom Cornelia butts heads with the most.
** In "The Stolen Heart", there's a plot point about Cornelia getting on Irma's case for making jokes at inopportune times. In the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuxing_(Chinese_philosophy) Wuxing philosophy]], Earth can weaken water by absorbing it, analogous to how Cornelia is trying to reign in Irma's humor.
** Cornelia is also the least friendly of the other four Guardians to Will when she comes to Sheffield and is the one most critical of Will's decision not to tell Elyon the truth of her birth, a plan Cornelia turns out to be right to criticize. As the Guardian of Earth, one could say that Cornelia was trying to "ground" Will, the Guardian of Quintessence/Electricity, before she did too much damage.
** By contrast, Irma is the most friendly towards Will and directly pushes back on Cornelia when the latter tries to blame Caleb getting captured by Cedric in the first episode on Will. Of the four classical elements, water is best known for conducting electricity, just as Irma is the most accepting of Will.
* The girls' PsychicPowers are extensions or analogues of their ElementalPowers.
** Will's Quintessence is [[ShockAndAwe electricity]] by another name. Her secondary power lets her talk to and command machines.
** Hay Lin can turn invisible like air.
** Irma can change the color of clothing and [[CharmPerson influence people's thoughts]]. This reflects how her element of water can take on different forms and shapes, making it the most versatile and malleable of the elements.
** Cornelia's telekinesis allows her to move objects around. While telekinesis is control over matter in general, Cornelia (like most telekinetics) uses it primarily to manipulate solid objects.
** Taranee is the trickiest one as fire and telepathy don't seem to have much in common. Until you remember that fire is a source of light and can even be used for communication (read: smoke signals). Taranee's telepathy is communication through the mind and allows her to see/hear people's thoughts which are invisible to everyone else.
* The girls' new powers also [[PersonalityPowers match]] or [[PowerStereotypeFlip contrast]] their personalities and characters in some way as well.
** Will is BookDumb but her technopathy allows her to understand machines in ways no engineer or mechanic ever will.
** The vibrant and boisterous Hay Lin gets invisibility, a power that makes it easy for her to be ignored.
** Irma has the power to influence people's decisions. As shown in "O is for Obedience", Irma can be rather bossy.
** Taranee has telepathy which allows her to read minds and send telepathic messages. Ironically (or perhaps fittingly), Taranee has issues communicating her feelings or wants as shown in "A is for Anonymous" and "P is for Protectors".
** Cornelia, the most materialistic of the girls, has a power that has the most influence on the material world.
* On the abrupt end of Taranee and Nigel's romance in the comic:
** In the comic Nigel suddenly becomes possessive when Tara starts spending less time with him and more with her dance school friends, especially when one is a boy, and almost shouts at her when she breaks things up due not being sure of her feelings anymore. This is actually the long term consequence of when Nigel's older brother, in his vendetta against Taranee's mother (the judge who sentenced him to jail) had him break things up and even help him vandalize Theresa's car, with Nigel writing up "unbearable scaredy cat" to hurt ''Taranee'' specifically (that phrase had been used by her when she got scared for nothing in his presence, and while her family was puzzled she recognized it). While they patched up things the damage was still done, and when they started growing apart he became possessive and precipitated things.
*** Nigel's brother being convicted by Theresa also explains why she was against Taranee dating him: one of her first cases saw her convicting Nigel's brother, then some time later she has to deal with Nigel being caught vandalizing in a museum and causing panic with a lizard man costume with Uriah's gang ([[NotMeThisTime they were actually innocent]], as they had snuck in to investigate the lizard man rumor and stumbled into Cedric and Vathek, but nobody believed them as the two had left before the guards showed up), it was inevitable she'd see Nigel as a criminal in making and obviously wanted to keep her daughter away from the bad influence.
** When he learns of the break-up, Peter is furious... At Taranee, as he knows how hard it was for Nigel to leave his admittedly sketchy background and clean up his act. Since Peter and Nigel were good friends, Taranee must have covered Nigel's involvement in vandalizing the car.
** Nigel is initially furious at the break-up... But then just disappears: after calming down he realized it was his own fault for the previous break-up and making the vandalized car personal with Taranee, and being a good guy he decided to just stay away from her and thus got out of focus. He may have even owned up to Peter about the car, and he wouldn't have taken it well.

!!FridgeHorror
* In the comic the 'elemental' power of the Keeper originates from bonds, and manifests as energy blasts. It doesn't seem dangerous... Until you bring this notion to the logical extreme: the Keeper of the Heart has ''absolute power over the bonds of matter and energy''. With enough control she could produce a lot of gold out of thin air, disrupting world economy, produce weapon-grade uranium out of anything, make things explode, or make ''anything'' disappear! Thankfully Will doesn't seem inclined, even if she has realized it during the New Power arc... But Nerissa not only ''was'' inclined, she already ''did it to Cassidy''! All of sudden the utter terror everyone in Kandrakar had of her and the notion that its walls would be useless against Nerissa when they did hold back Will and her group make horrible sense...
* Did Tony Vandom (in the cartoons) send his daughter a birthday card or even call her in the episode "Happy Birthday, Will"? Susan did reveal that he disappeared for months. So the possibility is there.
** Since the Tony in the show isn't a {{Jerkass}} like he was in the comics, a question remains: Why did he disappear for months?
*** Who's to say he isn't? He seemed to be encouraging Will to shun her responsibilities in "N is for Narcissist." Maybe he's trying to appear more amiable than Susan so he convinces Will to go along with whatever he recommends?
*** Seems it could be due to how irresponsible he can act. Letting Will drop whatever she's busy with to have fun instead does not sound like something Susan would approve of, they might've divorced over his reckless behavior and her borderline ControlFreak tendencies. Will also openly expressed many times she didn't want a birthday party until she ended up enjoying herself at Irma's house, Susan may have told Tony not to send a card to avoid bumming her out even more.
* When Will was kidnapped by Phobos and not rescued by the others until the next day, was Susan Vandom freaking out because her daughter didn't come home?
** And that event itself has the horror compounded by Will's surprise (pleased but ''still'') that the other girls came for her; she was apparently fully prepared to have to rescue herself or worse, ''not ever be rescued at all''.
* In the comics it's implied Nerissa was "destined" to be corrupted BY the Heart of Kandrakar. Will worries that she herself may become corrupted several times. If [[BecauseDestinySaysSo destiny says so]], then who's to say she won't be?
** It wasn't that Nerissa was destined per se, but that Keepers of the Heart have to be more careful to not be corrupted by the absolute power that the Heart entails. Nerissa's heart wasn't strong enough, Will's is.
** According to WordOfGod, Nerissa was originally a worthy keeper but something in their last battle weakened her bond with the other Guardians and increased her ambition too much, resulting in the Oracle trying (and failing) to stop her corruption as we know. The CHYKN spin-off was ultimately shelved so we don't know what happened, but yes, Nerissa was not destined to be corrupted... And Will, in the fourth arc, showed her heart was indeed stronger than Nerissa's.
* Phobos mentioned in season one he wanted to make sure his people are miserable by doing away with anything beautiful, what better way to keep people from openly rebelling than being FascistButInefficient?
* It's a children show, so no death on screen, but imagine how many people died in all these battles we are shown.
* Nerissa is a walking horror refrigerator.
** Her conception of Caleb is basically the first instance of canonical rape in a Disney show, seeing as how she impersonated the Mage to seduce Julian.
** It's never stated outright but it is very likely Nerissa killed the Mage before impersonating her. It wouldn't be the first time she killed someone she claimed to care for as Cassidy can attest to.
** In "T is for Trauma", Will theorizes that Matt is immune to Nerissa's spell because he has already broken free from her control when he defeated Shagon. At one point, Cornelia expresses concern over Caleb being controlled only for Will to remind her that Nerissa is his mother. Given how much of a ControlFreak Nerissa is, one can't help but wonder if she would stoop as low as using her love spell on her own son to make him obedient to her.
* In the comic, it is shown that Dark Mother tried to kill [[spoiler:Taranee]] as an infant by trying to suffucate her with vines in the crib to have one less Guardian facing her when she eventually escaped. Did she try the same with the others? ''Did she succeed with any of them'', and one or more is actually the replacement?
** [[spoiler:Dark Mother]] killing one or more of the Guardians as a baby would explain the initial skepticism from the Congregation and Luba first training Orube as a potential Guardian and then outright trying to get the girls fired: the previous generation of Earthling Guardians had already been a mess, if it turned out the current one had one or more members killed early they would assume the Heart would pick someone from a safer world and they were caught by surprise when they were told there were instead replacements from the same world.
** Exactly, how did Dark Mother know to target [[spoiler:Taranee]]? Easy: her seed was already on Kandrakar and had developed enough to let her spy on the Oracle when he learned the identities of the future Guardians.
** Irma's birth mother is missing. There's a good chance Dark Mother tried to kill Irma in the crib and [[HeroicSacrifice her mother died saving her]].
"H Is For Hunted" is disturbing on its own, but Astral Drops are terrifying when you remember that they tend to be very gullible and obedient. Will left a more subservient, naive clone of herself, a preteen girl alone in a laundromat, where any predator could kidnap the clone.

!!FridgeLogic
* Nerissa gives a few hints to Julian [[spoiler: about having posed as the Mage]], and he promptly goes to the Falls, to look for a grave there. Which means that he already knew there was a grave there? How could he not suspect anything, then?
** She says to him, "Remember Magenzian Falls?" The flashback showed that that was a place they had gone together before; she sent him there to find the grave so he could figure out what happened.
* Cassidy is BackFromTheDead, and reunited with her mother, but she's the twentysomething she was when she died, now. How does that work? Yan Lin's clone aged to match Yan Lin's age, Cassidy did not. Is she going to tell people she found the fountain of youth now?
** The aging thing might be different because Mira (Yan Lin's clone) was originally an Astral Drop, but Cassidy wasn't.
** She's probably going to claim to be a relative that "kinda" looks like Cassidy.
