Presumably, EDI and the Talons were separate development programs, maybe even competitors for the same contract - a hypersonic, piloted jet aircraft, and then an unmanned, hypersonic, autonomous weapons platform with a learning AI that wasn't ready for testing until well after the Talons were ready. EDI has a cockpit with a control stick, so the airframe was apparently designed first and the AI controlling it was added later. Cummings is also probably exaggerating to Gannon when he says that EDI is the whole idea. |
