Detectives "Turk" and "Rooster" are two of the best detectives on the force. "Turk" coaches softball, "Rooster" is a chess genius. Both are good cops.

But after "Turk" plants evidence that lands a child killer in jail, suspects they've had run-ins with start winding up dead with mysterious poems nearby, and soon the chase is on for a vigilante serial killer with a thirst for righteousness.

Directed by Jon Avnet (''Film/EightyEightMinutes'') and released in 2008, ''Righteous Kill'' co-stars Music/FiftyCent, Creator/JohnLeguizamo, Creator/CarlaGugino, Creator/DonnieWahlberg, and Creator/BrianDennehy. Pre-release it was hoped that this film would revive the faltering credibility of Pacino and [=DeNiro=], as the last time they'd teamed up the world was gifted with the modern classic ''Film/{{Heat}}''. Alas, it did terribly both critically and commercially.

!!This film provides examples of:

%%* {{Asshole Victim}}s: Father Connell, the child molesting priest.
* AllCrimesAreEqual: To the killer.
* BrokenPedestal: [[spoiler:Rooster has lost his faith in legal justice thanks to Turk planting a gun at the child killer's house]], resulting in him becoming a vigilante serial killer.
* CallingCard: The little poems left by the killer.
%%* ClusterFBomb
%%* DetectiveDrama
%%* DiagonalBilling
%%* DirtyCop: Both characters.

%%* HandOfDeath
* HowWeGotHere: The film opens with the killer's confession being read. It then shows everything leading up to that moment.
* ItNeverGetsAnyEasier: Mentioned, with a "You get numb to it."
* LetMeAtHim: The first attempt to arrest "Spider".

%%* NecroCam
* NeverTrustATrailer: The trailer gives the movie a much different feel for the story than what actually transpires, implying that Turk and Rooster are quietly carrying out vigilante justice together and covering it up as a team, with the force trying to find a way to catch them with proof, but neither willing to roll over on the other. The movie is certainly not ''that''.
* OffOnATechnicality: What leads to the killer's StartOfDarkness.
%%* OnceMoreWithClarity
* PoeticSerialKiller: Leaving a hand-written poem at the scene is actually part of the killer's ''modus operandi''.

* RabidCop: Both the main characters.
%%* ReturningToTheScene: [[spoiler: The killer]].
* ShootOutTheLock: Attempted by one of the characters, but subverted.
