The Red Lotus members themselves are also given a lot more depth, now that they aren't strictly villains. There are also some cleverly subtle consequences to Korra's kidnapping, like Amon's "accelerating plans" not happening, so this actually takes place later than Book 1 did.

Korra and Asami are brilliantly written - easily recognisable but with a harder tone to them than canon on account of both being raised to believe that certain kinds of people unequivocally need to be killed. Mako is so much more likable than in canon by virtue of his character arc being based more around his [[PromotionToParent Promotion To Parent]] than a romantic tangle. What really sells this fic for me though, is Korra's interactions with the Red Lotus. As they raised her, she thinks of them as aunts and uncles and her dialogue with Ghazan in particular is so normal (complete with in-jokes) that the reader almost forgets they're [[BombThrowingAnarchists out to rid the world of government]].
