!!Robert Neville

The protagonist, and as far as he knows, the only survivor of the plague. Once a factory worker, Neville now spends his days hunting vampires or repairing his house, while hiding in his home at night. Due to months and then years of isolation, Neville grows increasingly depressed and unstable.

* ActionDad: He was a father, but his daughter, Kathy, died from the plague. He had to have her body burned in order to prevent reanimation.
* ActionSurvivor: Neville is tough, but his still an average person. The reason he can so easily kill or capture vampires is because they're in a coma, or sleeping very heavily, during the day. [[spoiler:The vampires who haven't gone insane are able to capture him relatively easily.]]
* TheAlcoholic: At first, in order to cope with his isolation. He eventually stops for reasons he cannot reasonably explain.
* BadassBookworm: Starting from Part II, he spends a lot of his time studying the bacteria, trying to find a cure, or experimenting on vampires (living or dead). He is not an expert in any of this, however.
* DrivenToSuicide: Neville takes many risky actions throughout the story, such as fighting a horde of vampires or drinking heavily. He always stops before it is too late, however. [[spoiler:He kills himself using pills given to him by Ruth, because he fears a violent, painful execution.]]
* GoodIsNotNice: Neville lost most of his social skills due spending years by himself, but he is still a good person at heart and [[spoiler:is willing to accept being punished by the new society for his crimes.]]
%%* HappilyMarried: To Virginia.
* HeartbrokenBadass: The death of Virgina and Kathy hit Neville hard, and he thinks about them frequently throughout the story.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His indiscriminate killing of living and dead infected [[spoiler:turn the former against him, leading to his capture and death.]]
* LastOfHisKind: Neville is the last uninfected human known, both to himself and the [[spoiler:new community of infected humans.]]
* TheImmune: To the vampire bacteria. He theorizes it's because he was bitten by a bat infected with the disease some time before the outbreak and while he became violently ill from the experience, he managed to recover and became immune as a result.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: His daughter was one of the victims of the plague, and he was forced to take her body to a mass cremation the government had hastily set up in an attempt to stop the spread.
* SanitySlippage: Throughout the story, though he seems to grow more stable at the end.
* VampireHunter: When not working on his house, Neville spends his day looking for supplies and killing sleeping vampires.

!!Ben Cortman
--> ''"Come out, Neville!"''

Neville's former neighbor and a vampire. Every night, he comes to Neville's house, and shouts at and harasses Neville, telling him to come out of his house. By vampire standards, he is remarkably intelligent, capable of speaking a few words and limited tactical planning.

* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler:Neville has this reaction to his being shot at and eventually killed by the vampire hunters.]]
* CannotCrossRunningWater: Subverted. Neville tries to see if the legend that vampires cannot cross running water is true. [[LaughablyEvil Cortman being Cortman]], upon noticing the hose, jumps across it again and again in order to mock Neville.
* CelebrityResemblance: Neville mentions he looks like Oliver Hardy several times.
* ClimbingClimax: [[spoiler:He tries to escape from the new society's soldiers by climbing up and hiding in a chimney. He fails, eventually being knocked off the roof due to machine gun fire. He is then stabbed with a lance, which presumably kills him.]]
* EvilFormerFriend: Cortman was a neighbor and friend to Neville. After Cortman returned from the dead, he began hunting Neville.
* FatBastard: He is described as being "portly."
* LaughablyEvil: Ben is often whimsical in his behavior, often teasing or laughing at Neville.
* PsychopathicManchild: He almost acts like a little kid playing hide and seek with Neville. Suffice to say Neville doesn't find the experience fun in the slightest.
* SayMyName: When he can see Neville, he will just shout "Neville!" It appears to be one of the only three words he can say.
* TooDumbToLive: He tries to hide in his chimney when [[spoiler:soldiers begin killing vampires outside Neville's house, even after they see him climbing up the house, have a spotlight on him, and a firing upon him.]] Despite all his cleverness, he is still just one of the dead vampires.
* WorthyOpponent: Neville seems to think of him this way, at least. Neville remarks he doesn't deserve to be butchered by the new society's vampire hunters.

!!The Dog

A dog that Neville notices around his house. Due to years of isolation, Neville tries to befriend it, but it is terrified of him.

* CanineCompanion: Subverted. Neville ''tries'' to take the dog as a pet, but it is too scared of him and refuses to let him touch it. It eventually starts to trust Neville a bit more, but ends up getting infected before completely warming up to him.
%%* PostApocalypticDog
* ZombieInfectee: It disappears for a few days, and when it returns, it is implied to have been bitten. Neville tries to save it, [[spoiler:but it dies after a week.]]

!!Ruth

The only uninfected survivor Neville comes across. She claims to have lived with her husband until he was killed by vampires a few weeks ago. Initially distrustful of Neville, she eventually grows closer to him.

* BadLiar: Ruth isn't a particularly convincing liar, and she appears to make up her story as she goes. Neville continuously tells himself that he is just being paranoid whenever he finds a hole in her story.
* BecomingTheMask: Ruth ends up caring for Neville, [[spoiler:even though he killed her husband, after learning that he is not really a monster or even a particularly cruel person. She leaves him a note, begging him to escape before he is captured, and gives him pills that would kill him in order to spare him a violent execution.]]
* DaywalkingVampire: [[spoiler:Ruth is infected just like everyone else, but it capable of walking in the sun for short periods of time due to medication.]]
* DidNotDieThatWay: Not Ruth herself, but her husband. She claims he was killed by vampires, [[spoiler:but he was actually killed by Neville.]]
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: Ruth is shown to be a kind person, despite being infected. [[spoiler:Justified in that most living infected are otherwise normal people, particularly after they begin taking medication.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: She asks Neville a lot of questions about the vampires that he thinks would be obvious, and that she would have to know to survive. It turns out she was most likely just testing ''his'' knowledge on the bacteria.
* TheMole: [[spoiler:For the new society.]]
* ThereIsAnother: The only uninfected human Neville encounters in the story. [[spoiler:Subverted, as it turns out she is infected, just like everyone else in the world. Aside from Neville, that is.]]
* VegetarianVampire: [[spoiler:Like the rest of her people, she feeds the vampire bacteria with a pill that contains blood.]]
* [[ZombieInfectee Vampire Infectee]]: [[spoiler:Like every other human in the world, except for Neville. She and the rest of her people take medication to prevent its growth, however.]]

[[folder:Film]]

!!Robert Neville
* ActionHero: He spends most of the film trying his best to stay away from the infected, but once they manage to get into his house with him and the others, he wields any weapon he can get his hands on to get them out.
* ActionDad: Was a dad. Unfortunately, by the time the movie starts, he's been a CrusadingWidower that has outlived his offspring as well.
* AMFMCharacterization: He's a fan of Music/BobMarley and shares his love of ''Music/{{Exodus|BobMarleyAlbum}}'' with Anna. His daughter is even named Marley.
* BadassBookworm: He's a ColonelBadass-level member of the military and an expert scientist.
* BigNo: [[spoiler: When Sam is injured protecting him]].
%%* BlackAndNerdy:
* CanineCompanion: Accompanied by his German Shepherd Sam.[[spoiler: Until Sam is infected and he has to put her down.]]
* CrazyPrepared: He's spent a long time turning his home into a fortress with a fully-equipped lab, is armed to the teeth and takes measures to keep the Darkwalkers from following him home. [[spoiler:It only takes a single mistake (Anna taking him home without taking any measures to get rid of their odor trail) and he discovers the hard way that his measures can't stand up to a ZergRush of suicidally determined Darkwalkers.]]
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: But only in the theatrical ending, where he [[spoiler:runs head-first into the zombie horde and explodes himself on them so Anna could escape with the cure]]. In the [[AvertedTrope alternate ending]], he lives to see [[spoiler:that the Darkseekers were really only trying to rescue one of their kind]].
%%* GoodIsNotDumb
* GoodIsNotNice: At least not always. He spends a good chunk of the time he spends with Anna and the kid being pretty blunt.
* HappilyMarried: Was. They're dead now.
* HeartbrokenBadass: [[spoiler:His wife and kid died in a helicopter accident as they were trying to escape New York City. Becomes even more heartbroken when he’s forced to MercyKill his infected dog Sam]].
* TheKindnapper: [[spoiler:Uses one of the Darkseekers as a test subject for his research, not knowing that they are sapient enough to treat this as kidnapping]].
* MadScientist: Notable for not being evil.
* MadeOfIron: He gets the absolute holy hell beaten out of him in various stunts throughout the film, including a Darkwalker curb-stomping him and falling off several feet from a trap and onto his pocket knife. B
* ScienceHero: [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstructed]]. His main goal is to cure the disease and reverse the zombie apocalypse, [[spoiler:all the while unaware of how sentient the zombies actually are]].
* TooCleverByHalf: Dismissing a monster's attempt at getting back his abducted mate as a mere "memory remnant" was a truly stupid thing to do, in the long term.
* UnstoppableRage: [[spoiler: When Sam dies.]]
* WrongGenreSavvy: Is trying to make a cure for the zombie apocalypse [[spoiler:despite zombies having become the norm, and being more sentient than Neville gives them credit for...]]

!!Sam[[spoiler:antha]]
* ActionPet: Helps Neville against the infected as much as possible, but attacks some infected dogs full-on when they attack Neville.
* HeroicDog: Could have very easily left Neville behind, or just gotten into the car, but stayed to defend him from attacking infected dogs.
* LoyalAnimalCompanion: Follows Neville everywhere and helps him out as much as possible for a dog.
* MercyKill: [[spoiler: Neville is forced to kill her after she becomes infected by one of the zombie dogs, both to save himself (as she was already getting hostile) and to end her suffering.]]
* PostApocalypticDog: Is Neville's only friend, companion and defender [[spoiler: for most of the movie.]]
* TragicKeepsake: [[spoiler:She's the only thing that Neville has left of his family.]]

!!Anna
* ActionGirl: Implied to be this offscreen.
* BigDamnHeroes: Arrives just in time to drive the Darkseeker pack off just before they can kill Neville.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: She brought Neville back to his home because he needed medical treatment for his injuries, despite him warning her to remain outside until the sun had completely risen. As a result, the Darkseekers were able to track them back to Neville's house, then returned the following night with the intention of killing everyone inside.
* SoleSurvivor: She recounts that she spent the past three years aboard a Red Cross hospital ship that fled Sao Paulo during the KV outbreak. At some point, one of her fellow survivors on board the ship contracted the virus when it docked to look for supplies; when Neville asks what happened to the others aboard the ship, Anna grimly replies "The Darkseekers got them".
%%* TheHeart

!!Alpha
* AntiVillain: [[spoiler:In the original ending. All he wants is to get his mate, who Neville kidnapped, back. Once he obliges, he and his pack leave without a fight.]]
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: The leader of the pack amongst the Darkseekers, and is not above getting into the thick of it, or [[BadBoss smashing his underlings out of his way]].
* BadBoss: During several of his charges, he winds up batting away several underlings in his path. [[spoiler:The original ending potentially recontextualizes this as him just being ''that'' desperate to save his mate.]]
* BigBad: The main antagonist of the film.
* DeathGlare: When [[spoiler: Neville captures his mate]], the Alpha erupts from the dark, bellowing in fury and gives Neville a murderous look, only retreating when [[WeakenedByTheLight the pain from exposure to sunlight forces him back]].
* ItCanThink: He, like the rest of his kind, are a ''lot'' smarter than Neville gives them credit for.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: [[spoiler: As shown in the original ending, his fury at Neville and determination to hunt him down are motivated by a desire to reclaim his mate]].
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: [[spoiler: He's surprisingly shown to be one in the original ending; when Neville agrees to hand his mate over, the Alpha stops the rest of his pack from attacking with little more than a growl, and allows Robert to re-infect his mate with the Krippen Virus]].
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: [[spoiler: When Neville kidnaps his mate, the Alpha goes on one to get her back]].
* UnstoppableRage: By the time the Darkseekers storm Neville's lair, the Alpha is in a towering one of these, smashing aside any of his pack who get in the way and shattering bulletproof glass with his bare fists to get at the humans. [[spoiler: Justified, as his mate is a captive of Neville's and he wants her back]].
* TheVoiceless: KV seems to strip those infected with it of speech; as such, the Alpha only communicates to the rest of his kind with snarls, growls and roars.
