[[folder: Protagonists/Partners]]
!!The Player
The main character or "You". The personality of the character both depends on the partner recruited, and how the player acts, although it's not shown that much. The player is unable to attack or stun the monster by themselves, but with the help of certain partners, they can stun it.

* ActionDuo: The protagonist, with any character that isn't Naomi.
* ActionSurvivor: Along with Naomi.
* BlankSlate: The protagonist's responses to their companions vary on their companion, giving a blank and featureless character some flavor.
* FeaturelessProtagonist: The game tells you that you're the main character. That's it, no other info.
** The Japanese version supposedly contains more background on the character. According to the original Japanese language introduction, you're an office worker on his way home, which sets your gender as male and puts you atleast somewhere near mid-20s/30s.
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:The Dark Messiah is you! Specifically, you're the reborn soul of the Prince of the Old Ones, while the creature running around is your intended body.]]
----
!!Naomi Sugiura
After being the other surviving person on the train wreck, she decides to follow you. She is the first partner you can have, and has quite the advantage of showing the position of the monster. Although she's pretty passive, she's quite a nice person.

* ActionSurvivor: Along with the protagonist.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Viewing her memories, it's made clear that Naomi's psychic abilities have caused her to be ostracized by her friends and mother from a young age onwards.
* BrownNote: Strangely enough, can sometimes have this effect on the monster, occasionally stopping it in its tracks for a moment like any other companion.
* EnemyDetectingRadar: Her special ability. Although there's only one enemy, it's still useful.
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:Like the protagonist, her soul contains a piece of the Prince of the Old Ones, which is responsible for her DarkAndTroubledPast.]]
----
!!Kyoji Kamiya
A serial killer with a gun, which he got from his first victim, who was a police officer. He also kills stuff out of boredom. He's the second partner the player can encounter, and have him follow them around if Naomi died. He can stun the monster with his gun. [[spoiler:He was also on the train the player and Naomi were on, but he managed to escape before both of them recovered.]]

* CombatPragmatist: Nicked the gun from a police officer he killed and isn't afraid to use it.
* JumpedAtTheCall: [[spoiler:Kamiya attributes his homicidal urges to having a piece of the Prince of the Old Ones' soul just like the protagonist and Naomi. Unlike the two of them, he fully embraces this, and in his ending, he willingly merges with the Hybrid to create the Dark Messiah, taking the protagonist along with him.]]
* SerialKiller: The number of people he killed is unknown, but when you know that his first victim was an officer, equipped with a gun, he surely makes the list.
* TheSociopath: As a child, Kamiya enjoyed the sensation of killing an innocent kitten, and he only got worse from there.
* TokenEvilTeammate: He's a serial killer and beating the game with him as your companion [[spoiler:locks you into the bad ending]].
----
!!Leroy Ivanoff
He was sent in with his squad to wipe out the monster. It went… badly. Being the only survivor of the squad, he decided to hunt it down, finish the mission, and escape. Now he's stuck in The Mesh. He carries a rocket launcher that can stun the monster for a while.

* BadassNormal: When first met, you see him singlehandedly fighting off the creature. He and Kamiya are also the two companions best suited for combat.
* HunterOfMonsters: His dialogue seems to imply he and his squad specialize in eliminating unnatural hostile threats and were brought in as specialists by the Japanese government to deal with the Hybrid. They were completely outmatched by it, however.
* UsefulNotes/RussiansWithRustingRockets: Literally.
----
!!Rene Lorraine
After hearing about the kidnappings done by the cultists, she decided to get the scoop of the year. Easier said than done. After following the cultists to reveal why they are kidnapping people, she finds herself stuck in the underground tunnels of Tokyo. She is the last partner the player can recruit. She also carries an Uzi, but with a limited amount of ammo, requiring the player to be careful.

* ActionGirl: She looks and acts like a blonde, French, slightly more sensibly dressed Lara Croft, and knows how to use a submachine gun effectively. Shortly after you meet her she also saves you from the Holy Ring cult and the Hybrid.
* CheeseEatingSurrenderMonkeys: Averted.

!![[spoiler: That Which Wanders]]
When you get to the EldritchLocation, you see The Monster attack a being who is later named as "That Which Wanders". [[spoiler:If you do not have a partner with you, That Which Wanders will be the next partner.]]

* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler:Cannot leave the Hive with you.]]
* EldritchAbomination
* SixthRanger: He's the surprise 5th potential teammate and a member of the antagonistic alien species behind the whole mess.
* TokenHeroicOrc: He's one of the Old Ones (he even strongly resembles the Hybrid's second form), but wants to help you prevent the birth of the Dark Messiah instead of bringing it about. He's apparently a worker rather than one of the Hive's leaders.

!!Holy Ring
A mysterious cult that believes that the end is nigh and that the world will be judged by their Dark Messiah. They chase you during the introduction movie for the game.

* AssimilationPlot: What the "Great Union" truly is -- they want to force all of humanity into becoming one with the Dark Messiah.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler:According to That Which Reveals, all cultists of the Holy Ring were normal humans before being forcibly converted by That Which Whispers.]]
* HumanoidAbomination: Their HighPriest is a weird-looking ArtificialHybrid created from one of the humans kidnapped by the cult.
* ReligionOfEvil: They worship an EldritchAbomination!
----
!!The Hybrid
The creature stalking you throughout the game.

* TheAssimilator: Ivanoff explains that the Hybrid has the ability to absorb both organic and inorganic material to grow and transform itself. It started out as an alien slug that the Japanese government found, then absorbed a researcher that was studying it to become the shambling monster that attacks you at the beginning of the game. As the game progresses, it continues to transform into a more intelligent alien form.
* {{Determinator}}: It can't be killed by any weapons you possess and will pursue you relentlessly throughout the game.
* NighInvulnerability: Gunfire, flamethrowers, and even a rocket launcher just stagger it.
* SealedEvilInACan: The Japanese government found him sealed underground while digging out the tunnels for the creation of the Mesh, and thought it would be a good idea to unearth him and put him in a research laboratory closer to the surface.
* SuperPersistentPredator:
----
!!The Dark Messiah
A messiah that the cult believes will be TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt by judging humanity.

* AntagonistTitle: The original Japanese title of the game was Dark Messiah. It was most likely changed due to there being [[VideoGame/DarkMessiah another game with the title of Dark Messiah]] (which, as it happens, has [[spoiler:the same plot twist]]).
* CharacterTitle: [[spoiler:You are the Dark Messiah, so it makes a bit of sense.]]
* DarkMessiah: Duh.
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:As seen above, the player is the Dark Messiah. More specifically, the reborn soul of the Prince of the Old Ones which will become the Dark Messiah after the Hybrid absorbs them.]]
* WalkingSpoiler
