9	Both the BigBad and the [[VillainProtagonist protagonist]] of the series, Kato is an immortal EvilSorcerer who is out for revenge against the Japanese Imperial Court for conquering and killing his indigenous ancestors 2,000 years ago. He's referred to as an ''oni,'' and is proficient in UsefulNotes/{{Onmyodo}}. He also claims to be a descendant of famous onmyoji [[FamousAncestor Abe no Seimei]].

Where the confusion sets in is that there are a lot of sources telling you that Kato ''is'' Masakado's curse on the Imperial Court[[note]]which would only be a 1,000 year old curse[[/note]]. To make things even more confusing, in the books, Kato would brag about being the incarnation of the curse of other groups conquered (Chinese and Korean) or ostracized (those who practiced forbidden magic) by the imperial court as well. In one of the last books, he seems to {{Retcon}} himself into being Masakado himself reborn![[note]]Which makes little sense, because Masakado is still around as a separate entity[[/note]] The Other Wiki suggests that this Kato was simply being compared to Masakado (as they both fought against the central government), but without access the source material, it's difficult to determine if this was a mistranslation or a SeriesContinuityError on the book's part.
69	** To add to the confusion, the English dub of ''Doomed Megalopolis'' created its own exclusive backstory for Kato: he's supposed to be a demon created from the restless souls whose graves were left forgotten.
