The male lead of the story. With a sister and father in perpetual poverty, Uesugi takes up a tutoring job in order to bring in more money for his family. Despite his blunt and harsh way of interacting, he ends up being the Nakano sisters' personal tutor. At some point in the future, he marries one of the quintuplets, but even though she is clearly shown, because they are identical, it's unknown which one of the five it is.
----
* AccidentalPervert:
** The first time when he tried to retrieve his wallet he found Nino wearing her [[ModestyTowel towel]], thinking that Fuutarou is Miku.
** The second time when he entered the Nakano's household he found [[spoiler:Ichika]] in her towel, whose first reaction is to throw a bag at him to get out. [[spoiler:An unexpected event she uses to drive the plot of the zero-point score case]].
** A minor time is when [[FunbagAirbag he crashed into Miku's chest]], who was disguised as Yotsuba at the time when he was trying to match her with Sengoku trivia. Unlike the other times, it doesn't get discussed.
* AdaptationDyeJob: The first anime season portrays him with deep blue hair and blue eyes. The second season however gives him black hair and amber eyes, closer to his manga design.
* AthleticallyChallenged: Whenever he has to do a task that requires physical efforts, he quickly tires himself out.
* BeingPersonalIsntProfessional: After being rehired as the quintuplets' tutor, their father gives him a [[PapaWolf stern warning]] against having any inappropriate relationships with them. This visibly unnerves Fuutarou, as he is aware that Ichika and Nino are in love with him, and causes him to start distancing himself from the quintuplets.
* BerserkButton: Imply that he's all talk. Miku doing so made him spend days learning everything about Sengoku Warlords just to show her up.
* TheBGrade: Fuutarou normally gets perfect scores, but gets annoyed during finals [[spoiler:that all the girls managed to pass]] that he didn't, which were still high, with the lowest being 87 out of 100.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Cares a lot for his sister Raiha. He even [[spoiler:willingly ditches a field trip he'd been excited about before after hearing that Raiha collapsed from fever just so he could take care of her while their dad was out.]]
* BookSmart: He always gets perfect scores in his tests.
* BrutalHonesty: He lacks tact and loves saying things in the bluntest way possible.
* CallingTheOldManOut: [[spoiler:Does it to Maruo for being neglectful to his daughters, after he learns he was so buried in his job at the hospital he wasn't even aware of the spat between Itsuki and Nino]].
* CassandraTruth: In Chapter 97, to deflect suspicion from some girls, who wanted to prepare pancakes for the school festival, that Nino sided with the takoyaki faction in order to seduce one of the boys there, Fuutarou claims that Nino is in love with him. While this is true, due to Nino's popularity and Fuutarou's lack thereof, the girls do not believe him and think that he is delusional.
* CelibateHero: When questioned on the topic of love, Fuutarou claims love in high school is just a distraction beneath him. Later after coming to understand the various feelings of the quintuplets, he begins to rethink his outlook and believe people who are in love deserve validation too. [[spoiler:Not to mention he's aware of the fact that least a couple of the quintuplets are romantically interested in him, but he largely pushes that aside for a number of reasons.]]
* CharacterDevelopment:
** As the story progresses Fuutarou gradually develops more and more social awareness and becomes more perceptive of other people. [[spoiler:He later gains two male friends, Maeda and Takeda, and spends Chapter 91 at the beach with his classmates, with the quints absent. Takeda points out in Chapter 91 how much Fuutarou has changed, and implies that it is due to the quints.]]
** He also begins to gain more interest when it comes to love, [[spoiler:especially after Nino's confession in Chapter 60]]. While he doesn't understand a whole lot about the concept of love, he understands the weight of it as he begins to fully realize his own feelings.
** When the story begins, his interest in assisting the quintuplets largely revolves around keeping his high-paying tutor job, but it quickly becomes apparent he's genuinely fond of the group and helps them because he likes them and genuinely wants them to succeed. By then Fuutarou also becomes as much apart of the family as either one of the quintuplets.
* ChickMagnet: An odd example in that he only qualifies with respect to the quintuplets themselves, all of whom are very fond of him, and most of whom are outright in love with him.
* ClassRepresentative: In the third year thanks to Yotsuba volunteering him, and he becomes popular for being able to tell the sisters apart while doing the job.
* CoolBike: Rides a motorcycle (borrowed from his boss, a pastry chef) to retrieve Nino after she leaves to confront her father. He also reveals he got his license because he was doing delivery work at some point.
* CovertPervert: In the anime's first episode, Fuutarou's first meeting with Ichika has him initially [[MaleGaze lock his eyes on her chest]] for a good couple seconds before they move up to her face.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Season 1 of the anime portrays him with bluish hair and blue eyes. Averted in the manga and Season 2.
* DeadpanSnarker: The guy can be a sarcastic jerk to everyone except maybe Raiha every time he appears and opens his mouth.
* {{Determinator}}: He ''will'' make sure all five of the Nakano quintuplets pass their exams.
* DitzyGenius: There are times where while he's academically smart, he's not as street smart.
* FaceOfAThug: Has the look, but is anything but.
* {{Foil}}: [[spoiler:Fuutarou's circumstances are similar to Yotsuba's. Both grew up in a poor family and believed their lives to be meaningless. But whereas Fuutarou had given up on his situation, Yotsuba was determined to give her life meaning somehow. This culminated in them making a promise to each other: to study hard and become rich in order to support their families, and become someone useful to others. But while Fuutarou succeeded, Yotsuba failed miserably. On the other hand, Yotsuba’s mistakes became a factor to her abandoning her {{Inferiority Superiority Complex}} towards her sisters, and only then could she learn how to build relationships, empathy, and consideration; becoming a likable person with friends as a result. But Fuutarou, who although had become a highly intelligent and capable person, became a social outcast without a single friend.]]
* FormerTeenRebel: In this case, more like Former ''Pre-Teen'' Rebel, since Fuutarou (as a second-year high-school student) is stated in Chapter 14 by his father, to have previously been "a wild-type", like himself. Later in that same chapter, it is shown [[spoiler:that Fuutarou originally sported a delinquent look, complete with dyed blond hair and scowl, in a photo from five years before.]]
* FriendlessBackground:
** Fuutarou starts off as one in school before meeting with the Nakanos, to the point that despite being on friendly terms with most of them, his phone contacts are comprised of just his father and sister. Ichika makes sure to order him to gather all the Nakanos' contacts after the Summer Festival arc is over. [[spoiler:He later gains two male friends, Maeda and Takeda, with whom he forms a group for the Kyoto trip.]]
** Subverted in his childhood flashbacks, where he's shown to have a small group of friends he gets along with, but it's implied he distanced from them to focus on his studies.
* FriendlyRivalry: He develops one with Takeda, acknowledging him following the national mock exams.
* GeekPhysiques: Borderline example of the skinny type. Apparently focusing on his studies way too much made him less than average on the physical department.
* GoodWithNumbers: In the first episode alone, Fuutarou quickly calculates the menu prices in his head, being very fiscally minded.
* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler:In the flashbacks, it's all but stated that, before meeting the girl in his photo, he had a crush on his classmate Takebayashi, but dropped it [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy after he saw her with his other friend Sanada]]]].
* HonorBeforeReason:
** When he got his first paycheck from tutoring the Nakanos, his first reaction is to reject it since he felt undeserving due to not tutoring as much as he could (despite the fact that it wasn't his fault as the sisters actively rejected his attempts to tutor them).
** [[spoiler:He later decides to quit his tutoring job, on the grounds that he can't stand working for a father who is so neglectful to his daughters]].
* HopelessWithTech: Due to his poverty he initially doesn't know how to use the self-locking doors.
* ICantBelieveAGuyLikeYouWouldNoticeMe: Thinks of this of the Quintuplets, Nino and Miku in particular for falling for a guy like himself. This causes him a bit of a complex because Fuutarou has zero clue on how to return their affections.
* IdiotHair: Fuutarou has two of these, but he's no idiot. It also looks like Yotsuba's ExpressiveAccessory.
* ImageSong: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WdS4cHtb9M A Feeling that Never Fades]].
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Due to his blunt manner of speaking, he tends to come off as this.
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: The flashbacks suggest that he distanced himself from the few friends he had to focus on his studies. Sure enough, at the beginning of the story he doesn't have any friends or people close to him (except his family) until he meets the quintuplets.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Heavily implied to have done this when [[spoiler:he saw his friends Takebayashi and Sanada together, as he was all but stated to have a crush on the former]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He is very unfriendly before his interactions with the Nakanos, but shown to have some code of ethics that he abide. And much of his serious attitude is rooted on the fact that he genuinely cares about his family (especially his sister) and wants to provide for them and help them out of their poverty.
* LargeHam: Despite his usual seriousness, he can get worked up easily when dealing with the quintuplets, and also had a habit of boasting obnoxiously about his grades to the annoyance of the girls.
* LethalChef: During his shift working in a cafe, he realizes that his cooking skills are almost as bad as Miku's.
* LetMeTellYouAStory: When Nino despairs at messing up a batch of dough on her first day at work, and contemplates quitting as a result, Fuutarou responds by rattling off a bunch of short anecdotes about the number of times he screwed up on the job. While Fuutarou insists that he did so to show Nino the harsh realities of hard labor, it is instead suggested that this is his way of trying to cheer her up, as her mistake is nothing compared to what he has done.
* LoveConfession: Fuutarou gives one to [[spoiler:Yotsuba in Chapter 114. He tells her that he loves all of her sisters and that he was proud to have been their tutor, but he also admits that he would have stumbled somewhere along the line without her, and that she's the one he wants by his side. When confronted about her feelings, Yotsuba tearfully admits she's in love with him, too. In Chapter 119, during their first date, Fuutarou directly confesses that he loves Yotsuba and even proposes to her, to which she happily accepts.]]
* LoveIsAWeakness: At first, he views romance and socializing with others as a distraction for his studies. A large part of his CharacterDevelopment is growing out of this mindset.
* MirrorCharacter: The two prominent men in the story serve as this to him:
** [[spoiler:His father, Isanari, is Fuutarou had he not met Yotsuba in Kyoto and thus remained a delinquent and did not focus on his studies. His "Kintarou" disguise as well as Isanari as a student strongly resembles an older version of his delinquent look.]]
** [[spoiler:The quintuplets' father, Mauro, is Fuutarou had he not become their tutor. As a result, his social life would never improve as he would remain focused solely on his studies at the cost of everything else (which may possibly include even family). He even looks a lot like Maruo in the present day.]]
* NoHeroToHisValet: He is the valet to Ichika. Despite her increasing fame and notoriety as an actress, he still remembers her as a lazy slacker who slept through her classes. Additionally, he knew about her budding acting career from the beginning and is one of the few people who doesn't let it influence how he behaves around her.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Despite his serious demeanor, he gets very excited about the school trip (even mentioning he hasn't gone out in a long time), to the point of writing down ''everything'' he wants to do for the duration.
* ObliviousToLove: Four out of the five quintuplets are in love with him, yet he initially had no idea despite at least one of them giving off rather obvious clues. [[spoiler:Nino, the first of the quintuplets to confess to him, had to unambiguously spell out that she is in love with him for Fuutarou to understand]]. [[spoiler:[[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] with Miku, as he reveals to Yotsuba in Chapter 81 that he is aware of Miku's feelings.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: [[spoiler:Despite telling Itsuki in Chapter 77 that Miku is ''not'' in love with him and would support any relationship he might cultivate with another quintuplet, he reveals to Yotsuba in Chapter 81 that he was actually aware of Miku's feelings all along, and had been for quite some time. This is how he knew that it [[OutOfCharacterAlert wasn't actually Miku]] who told him that Ichika was in love with him in Chapter 74.]]
* OneHeadTaller: At the start of the story, he stands 1.78 m (5'10") over the quintuplets' 1.59 m (5'3"). Though later the gap is a bit closed, as the quints grow to 1.65 m (5'5").
* OppositesAttract: [[spoiler:Personality-wise, anyway. Fuutarou, who is reserved, socially awkward, physically weak, and very intelligent, eventually fell in love with, and later married Yotsuba, who is cheerful, extroverted, physically strong, and not so clever.]]
* OutOfCharacterAlert: [[spoiler:Chapter 81 reveals that he is aware the Miku who told him Ichika was in love with him and said she would support their relationship was not actually Miku, but someone else (Ichika herself) disguised as her. This is because he already knew Miku was in love with him and it would be a serious red flag for her to say otherwise.]]
* PeerAsTeacher: Fuutaro Uesugi was hired to tutor the five Nakano sisters, who are in the same year as him. Part of his struggle is to be taken seriously in his role.
* PerpetualPoverty: His family is poor and perpetually in debt. When he's served particularly good cooking, he can't even tell because he's grown up eating bland inexpensive food. This probably shapes his current personality, not willing to lose himself to temptations (like friends, hobbies and especially love) in order to have a secure future for his family. A FlashForward to his wedding reveals that his financial standing hasn't improved all that much.
* PrivateTutor: For the sisters, though it is Deconstructed in that as he is in the same grade as them, they fight him about it, and he is often at his limit in dealing with tutoring them, keeping up with his own studies, and handling their emotional baggage.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler:He gives one to Maruo, the quintuplets' father, for his negligent behavior, showing no concern for his daughters when being informed they had just gotten through a major fight he had no idea about. This culminates with Fuutarou resigning his tutor position in anger towards his employer.]]
* RightForTheWrongReasons: [[spoiler:When he calls Ichika out on her lies and her attempt to sabotage Miku's confession, he mentions the good luck charm that "Rena" bought five years ago. Ichika makes the mistake of saying that she still has it, and he knows it's a lie because the "Rena" he met gave him her charm, and then he lost in when he fell into the water during Christmas. While Ichika [[CassandraTruth isn't lying about having met him before]], he's correct in assuming that she wasn't the Rena who gave him the charm, since at this point he's still unaware that they're different quintuplets]].
* RunningGag:
** A recurring gag throughout the series entails another character, typically Itsuki, glimpsing his test results and him trying to stop her, with her noting his constant perfect scores and him mockingly acting embarrassed about it in response. This is averted in Chapter 60, where Itsuki almost does this yet again, but opts not to [[TemptingFate tempt fate]], assuming that Fuutarou got perfect scores yet again and not wanting to give him the chance to brag. Ironically, as Nino later finds out, this was one occasion where Fuutarou [[TheBGrade failed to score perfectly at all, though his grades were still very high nonetheless]].
** His weak physique is regularly played for laughs, being strong academically, but often embarrassing himself at physical tasks (not being able to walk carrying Miku on his back, or needing Yotsuba's help to carry the logs).
** Whenever he tries to act more social, he tends to exaggerate it. Best shown when he has an ImagineSpot about trying to apologize to Itsuki after their bad first encounter, he imagines her swooning over him. Much later, during the study session that kicks off the spat between Nino and Itsuki, his attempts to follow Yotsuba and Ichika's suggestions to keep them in line (first of complimenting them, and then critizicing them to become their "common enemy") are hilarously overplayed.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Whenever he's with Yotsuba, he's the savvy guy to her energetic girl.
* ScrewTheMoneyIHaveRules: [[spoiler:Fuutarou quits his high paying job as the girls' tutor following the prep exam, partially out of virtue that he believes the quintuplets deserve a better tutor, and also because he cannot stand working for the quintuplets' neglectful father.]]
* SecondPlaceIsForWinners: In Chapter 61, he enters a competition hoping to win the E prize, gift vouchers worth 3,000 yen, but also sets his eyes on the B prize, a pair of rings that he could potentially sell. He shows no interest in the A prize, tickets for a vacation to a hot spring, simply because he can't sell them. His [[SpringtimeForHitler failure]] to win either of his desired prizes, and scoring those tickets instead, is what kicks off the Scrambled Eggs arc.
* SecondYearProtagonist: At the beginning of the story.
* SecretKeeper: He was this for a short period of time, agreeing to keep Ichika's participation in auditions to become an actress secret until the other quintuplets find out about it.
* ShowerOfAngst: While he was showering because Nino forced him to, his scene in Chapter 43 has vibes of this, as it comes right after his encounter with "Rena" and he was quite depressed about it.
* SleepsWithBothEyesOpen:
** Does this twice during the fireworks festival, startling Ichika the first time. The second time she just gives him a LapPillow for helping the sisters get back together.
** Happened again at the start of the Seven Goodbyes arc, when he falls asleep on the hallway outside the Nakanos' apartment, due to staying up all night long preparing the practice exams for them. Itsuki at first panics and thinks he's dead, until he gives off a SnotBubble.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: The official English translation of the manga has no "u" at the end of his name, while this wiki and most other translations does use that "u" at the end.
* SternTeacher: His method of teaching is initially very strict and rigid, but he does learn to adapt his curriculum somewhat to suit the needs of the quintuplets.
* StockLightNovelEveryman: Despite debuting in a manga, he otherwise fits this trope to a T. He starts off as an OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent who is academically brilliant but comes from a poverty stricken background with his sister and father. However his life takes a turn when he gets hired to be the personal tutor of the Nakano quintuplets, who are on the verge of failing their classes. The series follows his exploits on not only trying to teach the quintuplets but getting several of them to accept him as their tutor too. UnwantedHarem aspects are also in play as despite him largely being a CelibateHero, several of the quintuplets all have crushes on him and one of them is shown to end up marrying him in a flashforward with her identity being unknown.
* TeamDad: Acts as such for the Nakano sisters. He's usually the person who scolds the girls and gives them tough love during their study sessions, as well as being one of their centers of moral support. He even jokes as much to Itsuki when she temporarily moves in with him. [[spoiler:It doesn't help that he looks a lot like their father, as well.]]
* TooCleverByHalf: He eagerly takes the tutor job thinking it will be a piece of cake with his great grades, but quickly finds his own limitations and shortcomings brought to the surface that he needs to overcome as well.
* TooDesperateToBePicky: Given his precarious economical situation, it's little wonder that he can eat [[LethalChef Miku's cooking]] and find it tasty. Both the anime and manga lampshade how he lacks a sofisticate palate.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: According to Volume 3, it says he likes everything that's edible, but he prefers Raiha's cooking. Volume 7's introduction reveals that his favorite drink is barley tea.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom:
** [[spoiler:Chapters 88 and 89 reveal that he is partially indirectly responsible for Yotsuba's current personality traits and her alienation from her sisters growing up. To wit, because of the promise he made with Yotsuba to study hard and get good grades when they were children, adding to her insecurity and identity complex with her sisters, she became so zealous in fulfilling said promise that she developed an InferioritySuperiorityComplex and strove to be the best out of the quintuplets, to the extent that she distanced herself from her sisters and treated them coldly. After she failed her exams and was expelled from her old school, her sisters lied that they cheated in order to transfer out with her. Their sacrifice led her to feel such overwhelming guilt that she decided to support them at her own expense from then on, including forfeiting any chance she might have of hooking up with Fuutarou when she met him again, despite still being in love with him.]]
** To a lesser extent, and even though it wasn't really ''his'' fault, his arrival to the Nakanos' household ''did'' threaten to break the bond between the sisters (just as Nino feared) as they began to fall for him.
* WallPinOfLove:
** Unintentionally does this to Itsuki when he declares that [[ThatCameOutWrong he is her partner]] after finally catching up to her.
** He's later on the receiving end from Ichika, when she drags him to an alley to (momentarily) escape from Oda, and yet again when she's filming a scene in Revival.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: After Fuutarou was made aware that multiple of the Nakano sisters are in love with him, he attempts to frivolously research the subject at great length with mixed success. [[BeYourself Itsuki simply tells him to just be honest with himself.]]
* WhenHeSmiles: In Chapter 37, he laughs when he manages to do a complete turn on the swings with Yotsuba. [[spoiler:As it turns out, this was what Yotsuba wanted, to see him genuinely smile and happy]].

The titular female main characters of the story. Despite their different hairstyles, hair colors, personalities, and voices, they're experts at impersonating each other and often do so, either for pranks or their own convenience. They also follow the "Five Equal Parts" philosophy, which is taught by their late mother, and despite their laziness in studying, they can be honorable and appreciative at Fuutarou's work and dedication towards them.
----
* AchillesHeel: The subjects where the girls got their lowest scores on are as follows:
** Ichika's weakest subject is Social Studies.
** Nino's weakest subject is also Social Studies.
** Miku's weakest subject is English.
** Yotsuba's weakest subject is Mathematics.
** Itsuki's weakest subject [[RuleOfThree is also]] Social Studies.
* AllegedLookalikes: The quintuplets supposedly all look and sound incredibly similar outside of [[IdenticalTwinIDTag a few telltale characteristics]], but they have different hair colors, hairstyles and, in the anime, distinct voices. While they're all supposed to have the same hair color InUniverse, the differences in hair color are [[StylizedForTheViewer exaggerated so that viewers can tell them apart more easily]]. Flashbacks to their childhood show that they were much more identical in appearance when they were younger, at least.
* AlwaysIdenticalTwins: Try identical ''quintuplets'', which in RealLife is almost unheard of aside from [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dionne_quintuplets one very famous case]]. As children they were even more identical, wearing matching outfits and having the same hairstyle, but the death of their mother prompted them to differentiate themselves from each other.
* BagOfSpilling: In Chapter 73, after they get drastically worse results on a practice test that Fuutarou gives them, compared to their marks on the last exam, he is left to wonder if their brains "reset" after every exam.
* BookDumb: As they were all nearly held back a year before transferring schools, leading their father to hire a private tutor out of desperation to help whip the five of them into shape; which is where Fuutarou comes in.
* BrattyTeenageDaughter: Their father believes that Fuutarou is turning them into this, as they become increasingly defiant towards him and apparently prioritize their relationship with Fuutarou over anything he tries to do for them.
* BrilliantButLazy: Downplayed, but it's all but stated that at least part of the quints' current academic issues (barring Yotsuba) are more a result of being actively lazy than actually being stupid (after all, they ''did'' manage to get passing grades in their previous school).
* CharacterTic: When Fuutarou is faced with a case of the quintuplets tearing off the names of the zero point test papers, in Chapter 35, his experiences showed that:
** Ichika's sheet is crinkled due to her messiness and writes in cursive.
** Nino would neatly place her sheet in a file.
** Miku's Japanese spelling is good.
** Yotsuba's Kanji is bad.
** Itsuki would use an eraser to get rid of mistakes.
* ColorCodedCharacters:
** Ichika: Yellow
** Nino: Dark Purple
** Miku: Light Blue
** Yotsuba: Green
** Itsuki: Red
* CripplingOverspecialization: Downplayed as their best subjects are still not great compared to Fuutarou, revealed in Chapter 20, the girls individually passed:
** Ichika's strongest subject is Mathematics.
** Nino's strongest subject is English.
** Miku's strongest subject is Social Studies, due to her interest in historical generals from playing an online game.
** Yotsuba's strongest subject is Japanese, though she claims that she guessed some of the answers.
** Itsuki's strongest subject is Science. She also has an interest in watching biology films.
* DisappearedDad: Them having a ''step''father brings this question to mind: what happened to their ''biological'' father? [[spoiler:Chapter 109 reveals that he--Mudou--is still alive and well]].
* DivergentCharacterEvolution: As children, they all dressed identically and had the same hairstyle. The death of their mother was the impetus that led to each of them developing her own look and character traits.
* DontSplitUsUp: Given that her mother's dying wish was that they always stick together no matter what, they take this ''very'' seriously. [[spoiler:In fact, the reason all of the others pretended to have cheated when Yotsuba was going to be expelled from failing her remedial exams was to make sure she wouldn't transfer alone]].
* ExactWords: [[spoiler:Fuutarou resigns after the sisters' grades still don't show much improvement, and gets banned from their home after chewing out their father for being too uninvolved in their lives. They proceed to rent out a new house because their father didn't ban Fuutarou from ''this'' residence.]]
* FirstNameBasis: Upon being placed in the same class in their third year, they flat-out say that they prefer to be referred to by their first names, likely to avoid confusion with each other.
* FiveManBand: They fall into this due to their personalities, traits and internally defined roles. The special store illustrations done by Negi Haruba to promote Volume 10 of the manga also depict them as a band with the same instruments as typically assigned to these character roles, save for Miku being a bassist and Itsuki being a keyboardist with castanets.
** TheLeader: Ichika
** TheLancer: Nino
** TheSmartGuy: Miku
** TheBigGuy: Yotsuba
** TheHeart: Itsuki
* FourPhilosophyEnsemble: Nino is the Cynic, Yotsuba is the Optimist, Itsuki is the Realist, Ichika is the Apathetic, and Miku is the Conflicted.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Yotsuba (sanguine), Nino (choleric), Itsuki (eclectic), Miku (melancholic), and Ichika (phlegmatic).
* HeWhoMustNotBeHeard: A by-product of PragmaticAdaptation on the anime's part, the quintuplet that Fuutarou ultimately marries in the story's FlashForward scenes has her voice unheard by the audience. Instead, her lines are shown onscreen as subtitles. This is to prevent viewers from identifying the bride via her voice as the quintuplets all have distinctive voices in the anime.
* HiveMind: Being quintuplets, they're capable of moving and speaking in perfect unison. However, in the series proper, the girls are already deviating from this, when them having their own distinct personalities and likes. In Chapter 70, Nino even explicitly says that they don't have TwinTelepathy.
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: Since the quintuplets facially look the same (along with their voices and bust size), the mangaka gives the girls various shades of pink hair in the color pages[[note]]InUniverse however, they're also supposed to share the same hair color[[/note]], as well as accessories, to better help identify them.
** Ichika has the shortest hair of the girls, and she has a piercing in her right ear.
** Nino wears butterflies-shaped ribbons on both sides of her hair. She also has the longest hair out of the five [[spoiler:until she cuts it short]].
** Miku has headphones she usually wears, and mid-length hair.
** Yotsuba wears a ribbon atop her head, and has the second shortest hair.
** Itsuki wears star-shaped hairclips, and has a prominent IdiotHair.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: [[spoiler:The quintuplets fall in love with their tutor Fuutarou, who is personality-wise and attitude-wise very similar to their mother Rena.]]
* NewTransferStudent: The Nakanos transfer to Fuutarou's school in their second year, but only Itsuki is in the same class as him, at least initially. In their third year, all of them are put in the same class as Fuutarou.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: Miku, Yotsuba, and Ichika (Nice), Nino (Mean), and Itsuki (In-Between). Ichika becomes in-between later on since she TookALevelInJerkass.
* NumerologicalMotif: In addition to their NumericalThemeNaming, they all have some visual hint towards their names and place in the birth order.
** Ichika wears only '''one''' earring.
** Nino wears '''two''' butterfly-shaped hair ribbons.
** Miku's headphones have triangles, a '''three'''-sided shape, on the outside of their speakers.
** Yotsuba's hair ribbon is shaped like a '''four'''-leaf clover.
** Itsuki wears hairclips shaped like stars with '''five''' points.
* PullingTheThread: While their faces, voices, and figures are completely identical, their different hairstyles give them away should they get careless with their appearances whenever they pose as each other.
* RagsToRiches: [[spoiler:Chapter 41 reveals that, before they met Fuutarou, they were actually as poor as him and it was only until their mother remarried to their stepdad that they have money]].
* RichesToRags: [[spoiler:The end of the Seven Goodbyes' arc. In order to have Fuutarou teach them again, they willingly give up their luxurious lifestyle and live in a modest apartment]].
* SecondYearProtagonist: At the start of the story, they're all in their second year of high school.
* SiblingYinYang: The sisters all contrast themselves in one form or another, so here are the more obvious ones:
** '''Ichika and Nino''': Ichika is a lazy slob, while Nino is hardworking when it comes to minding the house. While Ichika is passive and tends to take a supporting role towards her sisters, Nino is more aggressive in pursuing her interests. Ichika also tends to tease others while Nino bluntly states what is on her mind. While the latter had the courage to deliver a second (and unambiguous) LoveConfession to Fuutarou after he didn't hear her first one, the former [[spoiler:did not even have the courage to do this, and resorted to disguising herself as Miku in order to convey her feelings to Fuutarou]].
** '''Nino and Miku''': Nino is boisterous and abrasive, while Miku is quiet and soft-spoken. Nino is also a social butterfly and actively [[TheFashionista tries to be fashionable]] through expensive clothes, spa treatments and manicures, while Miku is a loner, tends to keep to herself, and an UnkemptBeauty that does not concern herself much with her appearance. Nino is also a SupremeChef, while Miku is a [[LethalChef lethal one]]. The former is the first to unambiguously deliver a LoveConfession to Fuutarou, while the latter is the first to openly fall for him.
** '''Miku and Yotsuba''': Miku is rather reserved and introverted, while Yotsuba is more hyper and extroverted. The former is the smartest out of the quintuplets, while the latter is the least intelligent. However, the former is also the least athletic while the latter's athleticism is the highest. The former is noted to be the most skilled at disguising herself as her sisters (and thus lying), while the latter is terrible at it and CannotTellALie.
** '''Nino and Itsuki''': Both are {{Tsundere}}s, but Nino is somewhat more mature in her temperament than Itsuki (who is far more prone to childish sulking and pouting). Interestingly, the dynamic flips somewhat after a few months, with Itsuki being more accepting of Fuutarou as their tutor (perhaps due to being sympathetic to his economical struggles) and even defending him from Nino when she goes too far.
* SignificantBirthDate: Their birthday is May 5th, that is, fifth day of the fifth month.
* SleepCute: All of them do this on the bus at the end of Chapter 86 after making up with each other. Fuutarou captures this moment in a photo for an album he makes for them as a birthday present.
* StylizedForTheViewer: While they're depicted with different hair colors in both the manga and anime, this is simply for the audience's convenience, as the only difference noted in-universe is length. However, flashbacks to when their mother was still alive depicted them all with the same long pink hair.
* ThemeTwinNaming: The Nakano quintuplets are [[NumericalThemeNaming named after the Japanese numbers for one to five]] in the order of their birth. From oldest to youngest: '''Ichi'''ka, '''Ni'''no, '''Mi'''ku, '''Yotsu'''ba, and '''Itsu'''ki.
* TwinSwitch: They're capable of posing as each other should the need arise. A few people are still able to tell them apart, though.
* UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist: {{Downplayed}}. The Nakano quintuplets are generally adorable and kind girls, but at first they are also primarily characterized as a group of lazy idiots who bring most of their problems upon themselves.

The eldest daughter. She aims to become an actress. She tends to tease Fuutarou frequently and is the third to accept him as the quintuplets' official tutor.
----
* ArcVillain: [[spoiler:For the Sisters' War arc, she takes to sabotage her sisters efforts to make advances on Fuutarou before she does]].
* BadBadActing: When she initially tries out acting (especially when attempting to smile naturally), thus having her career stalled until the Summer Festival starts. Still, she could perfectly imitate her sisters. [[spoiler:She still improves upon her craft and manages to impress Fuutarou by praising a pie he made (which is as badly made as [[LethalChef anything Miku cooks]])]].
* BigSisterBully: Often stole snacks and stickers from her younger sisters as a child. She grew out of it, [[spoiler:though briefly slipped back in with her callous attempts to sabotage her sisters' relationships with Fuutarou.]]
* BigSisterInstinct: She's the most emotionally-grounded of her sisters and looks out for them the most. She's also the only one (at least at first) providing for them by working in a job.
* CantSpitItOut: Ichika repeatedly proves incapable of earnestly expressing her feelings towards Fuutarou, often resorting to roundabout or indirect ways of confessing her feelings.
* CassandraTruth: ZigZaggingTrope. [[spoiler:She confesses to Fuutarou that she is the girl who he met in Kyoto, but given her earlier deception by disguising herself as Miku to sabotage her, he doesn't believe her. Though she is right that she is the girl who he played cards with, but that was due to her being mistaken for Yotsuba.]]
* ChronicallyKilledActor: InUniverse. As she starts getting movie roles, she only seems to be cast as a girl who dies early on.
* ClarkKenting: As she becomes more famous, she starts wearing glasses in public so that people won't recognize her.
* CoolBigSis: An invoked example to her sisters.
* DeadpanSnarker: On occasion she makes some sarcastic remarks. Fitting for her mischievous nature.
* DemotedToExtra: Downplayed. [[spoiler:The general consensus is that after her [[ArcVillain role]] in Sisters' war, Ichika drops out of the running for Futarou's affections. Her screentime after that is notably diminished due to her being busy because of acting gigs and her lingering with the rest of the girls is the author's attempt to keep up the series mystery. She's even absent in one of the final group shots in chapter 120.]]
* DickDastardlyStopsToCheat: A particularly sad example. [[spoiler:In her desperation to make Fuutarou fall for her, she resorted to sabotage the efforts of the others, particularly when she tried to pass off as Miku. Had she been honest from the beginning (namely, telling Fuutarou that she had met him before), she might have had a legitimate chance]].
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Shiitake mushrooms.
* DudeMagnet: She's really popular among the boys at school.
* EnforcedMethodActing: An InUniverse example. The beginning of Chapter 102 shows her actually striking another actor as part of a scene she was filming.
* EntitledToHaveYou: A less extreme example than usual, but she starts showing shades of this after [[spoiler:she scores the highest grades out of her sisters in the final exams, barely beating Miku by two points. Later, when she talks to Nino (whose confession to Fuutarou she eavesdropped), she tries (and fails) to dissuade her from pursuing him, and it's clear she thinks she deserves Fuutarou more because she fell in love with him first]].
* ExactEavesdropping: [[spoiler:She ends up overhearing Nino's LoveConfession towards Fuutarou in Chapter 60, right when she herself was considering confessing as well.]]
* ExtremeDoormat: Ever the dutiful and selfless older sister, Ichika will very often put her own desires second in favor of supporting her sisters. She initially shoulders paying the quintuplets' rent all alone, struggling all the while, and deprives herself of pursuing Fuutarou knowing her sisters also like him. Subverted later when a heart-to-heart with Yotsuba encourages Ichika to allow herself to be selfish again when the burden becomes too much for her to bear.
* FashionableAsymmetry: The bang hanging on the right side of her hair is longer than the left one.
* FighterMageThief: In an art spread that depicts the girls as traditional RPG classes, Ichika is the Thief to Miku's Mage and Itsuki's Fighter.
* FirstGirlWins: Attempts to invoke this by trying to be the first one to confess to Fuutarou, but is beaten to the punch by Nino. Later [[spoiler:she tries to tell him that she's the girl he met in Kyoto five years ago, but due to her betrayal of her sisters he doesn't believe her]].
* TheGadfly: She's fond of teasing both Fuutarou and her sisters out of amusement.
* GirlishPigtails: She briefly dons this hairdo when filming her scene as "Tamako".
* GrewASpine: After her mom's death, she took on her role as a big sister too far to the point she is willing to work as hard as possible just to take care of her siblings when they moved out. The Scrambled Eggs arc, with a heart to heart from Yotsuba, decides to be selfish as she used to be as a child, ultimately not using the big sister excuse to step aside and let her sisters claim Fuutarou in the end. The chapter after the arc has her forcing her sisters to work in order to pay the rent.
* HeavySleeper: Since she's juggling both her actress job and her academics, she tends to crash hard when given the opportunity.
* HiddenDepths:
** She started off playing the elder, seductive role in front of Fuutarou, but when she fell in love with him for real, she ended up being the more flustered one compared to Miku.
** [[spoiler:She is also revealed to have been the most selfish quint when they were young. A trait that is resurfacing as of Chapter 69.]]
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: See CassandraTruth. [[spoiler:In Chapter 74, while disguised as Miku, she tells Fuutaro that she's a ShipperOnDeck for him and Ichika. This comes back to bite her when she tries to confess to him that she is the girl he spent the day and played cards with in Kyoto five years ago, as he outright tells her that he can no longer trust her due to her previous deception.]]
* ImageSong:
** [[https://files.catbox.moe/o8bymh.mp3 Hello, dear my dream ~ One second later ~]], for Season One.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjA_CXiSn3Y One Love]], for Season Two.
* InLoveWithLove: There are some hints that, at least early on, she might be attracted to the ''idea'' of being in love with Fuutarou, rather than him as a person:
** During the {{Kimodameshi}}, Miku asks her what she thinks of Fuutarou, and Ichika tries to deflect the question making a joke. She's unable to give a proper answer even after Miku clarifies that she means what she thinks of him as a ''guy''.
** In Chapter 38, while they're PlayingHouse, Kiku asks her and Miku what they like of her "daddy" (who's being played by Fuutarou). Again, Ichika finds herself unable to give a concrete answer, while Miku lists all the qualities she likes of Fuutarou without hesitation.
** Even she seems to be aware of this, questioning herself as to why she fell for a guy like him.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: She wants Miku to be happy with Fuutarou when she correctly deduces that Miku has fallen for him despite feeling the same way towards him. [[spoiler:This trope is thoroughly subverted in Chapter 74, when after confessing to him disguised as Miku, she also tells him that she (Miku) is cheering them on.]]
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:Her attempts to sabotage her sisters' efforts to win Fuutarou over backfire horribly and end up killing her own chances with him]].
* LazyBum: She is generally the laziest of the sisters, sleeping ''during the day'' and [[TrashOfTheTitans leaving her bedroom a dump]].
* TheLeader: Despite their negligible age difference, she is typically defined as this among her sisters, on account of her being the oldest. Yotsuba even outright states this in Chapter 66. To wit, she is often the one who comes up with ideas for what the quintuplets should collectively do, and they typically defer to her judgment. For a while, she was also their sole breadwinner as well and single-handedly worked to support her sisters studies and pay the rent after they moved out of their luxurious apartment.
* LockedInARoom: She finds herself in this situation with Fuutarou during their field trip.
* LoveConfession: [[spoiler:She tells Fuutarou that she is in love with him in Chapter 74. However, she does it while disguised as Miku, as she lacked the courage to tell him her feelings directly like Nino did.]]
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Downplayed. [[spoiler:Her love of Fuutarou was the main reason she betrayed Miku's trust in Chapter 74 and it appears that will not be the only time.]]
* MatchmakerCrush: She initially ships Itsuki and Fuutarou together during the first few chapters, but after noticing Miku's growing affection towards him, eventually jumps ship to wholeheartedly support Miku instead. Of course, this becomes a problem for her when she herself gains a crush on Fuutarou despite genuinely [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy wanting Miku to be happy]]. [[spoiler:She discards the 'Matchmaker' part in Chapter 74, when she confesses to Fuutarou whilst disguised as Miku, and also tells him that she (Miku) thinks they would be a great couple.]]
* MoneyDearBoy: In-universe. To support their new living arrangements when the sisters leave their big appartment, she had to work in a lot of roles to help stay afloat.
* MustMakeAmends: [[spoiler:After she ruins Miku's plan to confess to Fuutarou and sees how hurt her sisters were at her betrayal, she decides to make sure Miku can spend the last day of the Kyoto trip alone with Fuutarou to make up for it]].
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone:
** [[spoiler:She has this reaction when she learns just how significant the bonfire dance with Fuutarou was to Miku just as she was about to dance with him when they were accidentally locked in the storage room together during their field trip.]]
** She has another one in Chapter 59. [[spoiler:By (unintentionally) getting the highest average score out of the five of them, she inadvertently ruins Miku's plan of confessing to Fuutarou should she ever get the highest mark. To Ichika, who only wanted her sister happy by supporting her with her crush, her getting the highest score is something she feels is a betrayal to Miku since that would mean Miku's efforts to get the highest score were pointless.]]
** Her biggest one comes in Chapter 85. [[spoiler:A heart-to-heart talk with her sisters and them apologizing to ''her'' (even though she is the sole responsible for the current mess) makes her realize how much she hurt them in her obsession to hook up with Fuutarou]].
* NiceGirl: Ichika is overall characterized by being a kind girl who does her best to support her sisters and make them happy. Sadly, her feelings for Fuutarou caused her to [[TookALevelInJerkass become more ruthless]] in her attempts to get together with him.
* NotAMorningPerson: She is usually shown sleeping in her bed, even when it's already far past noon.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: [[spoiler:After Nino tears into Ichika for betraying Miku's trust by sabotaging her attempt to confess to Fuutarou, the latter tries to claim that the former isn't all that different, due to her own ruthlessness in pursuing Fuutarou. [[ArmorPiercingResponse However]], Nino replies that while she does have feelings for Fuutarou as well, [[NotSoSimilar she is not willing to sacrifice the bond that she has with her sisters in order to try and hook up with him]].]]
* PaperThinDisguise: After she starts becoming more recognized as an actress, she dons a pair of glasses to disguise herself in public.
* OutOfCharacterAlert: [[spoiler:When she posed as Miku to confess her feelings to Fuutarou, the latter knew something was off because he knew Miku was in love with him. She later gets her bluff called out during the Kyoto trip]].
* RomanticFalseLead: [[spoiler: Despite showing signs of being the obvious "Main Girl" of the series, it is Yotsuba who gets the male lead, instead of her.]]
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: SleepsInTheNude, and subconsciously strips when she goes to sleep in pajamas. She also hardly seems to mind if Fuutarou sees her naked.
* ShipperOnDeck: Supports the idea of Miku and Fuutarou getting together, despite ''also'' [[MatchmakerCrush having a crush on him]]. Later, this is subverted in Chapter 74 when [[spoiler:she disguises herself as Miku, delievers her LoveConfession to Fuutarou, and falsely claims that Miku is this towards the idea of Ichika and Fuuatrou being a couple]]. Chapter 77 suggests that [[spoiler:Fuutarou completely bought what Ichika told him]].
* {{Sleepyhead}}: Often dozing off at the most inopportune of times. To the point that having 8 hours of sleep (which is considered healthy) doesn't fully make her well-rested.
* {{Sleepwalking}}: Prone to stripping herself in her sleep, though she claims it only happens when she's at home. She even began taking her shirt off in front of Fuutarou once when she fell asleep during a study session, forcing the rest of her sisters to hastily intervene.
* SpannerInTheWorks:
** [[spoiler:Unintentionally derails Miku's plans to confess to Fuutarou by getting a higher score than her in their final exams.]]
** She also [[spoiler:derails Nino's attempt to have some alone time with Fuutarou by not keeping guard on their dad like they both agreed she would during the Scrambled Eggs arc. This time, the doublecross is intentional.]]
** She later [[spoiler:turns this into her M.O. Following the Scrambled Eggs arc, she resolves to sabotage any of her sisters' attempts to make a move on Fuutarou before she does. She starts off by sabotaging the sister who fell for him the longest but is too meek to make a major move on her own: Miku.]]
* TheTease: She wastes no time using her charms to playfully make fun of everybody.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Salted fish (food) and frappuccino (drink).
* TrashOfTheTitans: Her room is a disaster area, with shopping bags and other stuff just ''littered'' on the floor and on her table. After moving into a more modest apartment, the area around her futon also starts looking like this.
* TypeCasting: InUniverse. Ichika often gets cast as the first girl to die in low- to middle-budget {{Slasher Movie}}s. She doesn't attempt to branch out for a while because typecasting translates into steady income, [[spoiler:which becomes extremely important when the sisters leave their father's place after he bans Fuutarou from the premises.]]
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: [[spoiler:Her being a BigSisterBully to Yotsuba when they were younger might have (at least partially) pushed the latter to try and distinguish herself from her sisters, thus leading to the whole plot]].

The second eldest daughter. Good at housework and very social. Abrasive and resistant to Fuutarou due to his sudden insertion into her's and her family's lives and is the last to accept him as the quintuplets' official tutor.
----
* AffectionateNickname: She refers to Fuutarou as "Fuu-kun" after falling for him.
* AfraidOfNeedles: Bring her for vaccinations, and she'll run. She also begs Fuutarou to help pierce her ears because she's too nervous to do it herself.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Her initial crush on "Kintarou" and a younger Fuutarou who sported a punky delinquent appearance are indicators of the [[HasAType type of boys]] she particularly likes. The fact that Fuutarou has the FaceOfAThug also helps. That said, she did initially poke fun at Miku for liking him, dismissing him as "dull looking".
* AlliterativeName: Both her first and last name start with "N" and end with "no".
* AnimalMotifs: Is often associated with rabbits throughout the series (has some as plush dolls, her yukata during the fireworks festival has a rabbit pattern, and her cellphone's case has the ears). Volume 4's introduction states that it's her favorite animal.
* BigSisterBully: Downplayed, but occasionally acts like one to Miku by either bossing her around or teasing her with [[InnocentlyInsensitive harsh, scathing remarks directed at her]]. Unlike most examples though, Nino does sincerely apologize to her if she goes too far.
* BigSisterInstinct: Is aggressively protective of her sisters, serving as the primary fuel for most of her hostility towards Fuutarou.
* BitchSlap: In Chapter 115, [[spoiler:Yotsuba went to Nino out of concern for her feelings after Fuutarou confessed to the former, implicitly rejecting her sisters. A smack is heard and Yotsuba is seen strewn on the ground with Nino standing over her, implying that the latter struck the former. Given that Nino was upset by being rejected by Fuutarou, Yotsuba not proactively trying to appeal to him romantically, and Yotsuba accepting his confession despite seemingly not having feelings for him, this is hardly surprising]].
* BlindWithoutEm: Wears contacts, and her vision is bad to the point where she thought Fuutarou is Miku without them.
* BrutalHonesty: She can easily rival Fuutarou on this, always speaking her mind. [[spoiler:Post-CharacterDevelopment it actually works in a positive way, since, after she swallows her pride and accepts that she loves Fuutarou, she's not afraid to make it known to him (and to everyone else)]].
* ClingyJealousGirl: [[spoiler:Downplayed.]]
** [[spoiler:Despite supposing to be supporting Miku during her alone time with Fuutarou in Kyoto, she shoves him from behind, causing him to inadvertantly knock Miku into a fountain while muttering that no one will take him from her.]]
*** [[spoiler:She isn't exactly pleased to see how close Fuutarou and Miku are becoming from the former working at the Komugi-Ya with the Revival's manager being too injured to keep the shop open.]]
** [[spoiler:She seems to be miffed at the sight of Fuutarou and his childhood friend Takebayashi, although unlike Miku, Nino still maintains her composure, bragging her closeness with him, and didn't confront him about it.]]
* ComicalNapDrool: Has one when Fuutarou enters her room in Chapter 14, and wakes her up to ask that she returns his notebook.
* CovertPervert: When Fuutarou comes out of the shower wearing just a towel, she covers her eyes with her hands... and then opens between her fingers to take a peek.
* CrutchCharacter: In the Gotoubun no Hanayome ∬: Natsu no Omoide mo Gotoubun visual novel. Each of the quints begins the story with a score no higher than 20 in any subject or skill with the exception of Nino who begins with a whopping 60 in cooking. This makes her immediately indespensible as the player's primary source of HP/Stress recovery during meals. Nobody else will approach her consistency in this role until the game is nearly finished.
* DaddyIssues: Her relationship with her father is strained at best, as she believes that he just wants to boss her and her sisters around, not even caring at all about them, despite Yotsuba and Itsuki saying otherwise. Her resentment towards Fuutarou is strongly implied to be partially due to her seeing him as an extension of her father. [[spoiler: It doesn't help that he looks a lot like their father, as well. After seeing Maruo calling out Mudou for being an absentee father, she starts to have second thoughts.]]
* DamselInDistress: She is frequently put in this situation, necessitating a rescue from Fuutarou. See RescueRomance in this section for more details.
* DeadpanSnarker: She's second only to Fuutarou when it comes to dry humor.
* DeathGlare: [[https://i.imgur.com/aFqNHK9.png Has an absolutely TERRIFYING one]], as the track team captain finds out the hard way.
* DislikesTheNewGuy: Her attitude towards Fuutarou's arrival to their lives has vibes of this, and she freely admits that she doesn't want anyone else in their home.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Food items that have been pickled.
* {{Dominatrix}}: When she and the others are discussing about getting part-time jobs, Miku jokingly says she could make one of these. Nino isn't amused in the least.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Nino expresses this in Chapter 115 after [[spoiler:Yotsuba shows concern at how she might be feeling after Fuutarou chose the latter over her sisters. To wit, Nino is irritated with this behavior due to a combination of Yotsuba not proactively doing anything to appeal to Fuutarou romantically, and her accepting Fuutarou's confession despite ostensibly not being love with him.]]
* EveryProperLadyShouldCurtsy: She does this when inviting "Kintarou" to dance with her after [[RescueRomance he saves her]] from falling off a cliff.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Despite her conflictive personality, there are some lines she's not willing to cross, owing to how much she values her family:
** She genuinely feels bad when she makes Miku cry with her teasing, and immediately does her best to apologize.
** [[spoiler:After she accepts her feelings for Fuutarou and makes it clear she's going to fight for him, she responds to Ichika's NotSoDifferentRemark by stating that she would never resort to underhanded tactics or sabotaging the others' efforts, because she values her bond with her sisters just as much, if not moreso]].
* ExactWords:
** She tells Fuutarou that she didn't poison the cookies. [[SlippingAMickey His water, however...]]
** After the midterms, she tells her father that "the five of them passed each of the subjects" to prevent him from firing Fuutarou over the quintuplets not passing under his tutelage. As in each of them passed only one different subject.
* TheFashionista: Out of all the quintuplets, she is the most likely to dress in a manner that befits her wealth. Chapter 23 also shows that she has a keen eye for fashion, picking out appropriate clothes for Fuutarou to wear on their field trip when her sisters fail to do so.
* FatalFlaw: She has two, which are exacerbated by her already short fuse:
** While she genuinely cares about her sisters, her fear of being left alone makes her want to force them to act like she does. This is shown in her arguments with Itsuki about their movie tastes and with Miku about the tea they like to drink. It's implied this is why she sabotages the early study sessions and starts getting upset when her sisters begin to accept Fuutarou as their tutor.
** She often complains about people not understanding her, but an outside observer can notice that, more often than not, she herself doesn't make an effort to understand other people, whether it is Fuutarou, her sisters, or even her father.
* FieryRedhead: She has the shortest temper of the quintuplets.
* FlippingTheBird: She does this during the quintuplet game but hides her hand, save for the extended finger, with her other hand. Whether she was using the game as a way to flip Fuutarou off or not is ambiguous.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Nino's conflicting crush on Fuutarou gets hinted at as early as chapter 17 where, during a nighttime study session takes a turn. The study session derails into becoming a quiz game on what Fuutarou ideal type of girl is and Nino takes a sudden interest despite trying to deny it. Also, during the school trip, she's mentally worried about him when he gets sick, thinking that he should care more about his own health.
* ForgotICouldntSwim: She cannot swim, at least not well, and in Chapter 50, when she jumps into the water to try and save Fuutarou after he slips in, it is her that winds up almost drowning, requiring a rescue from ''him'' instead.
** Likely averted in Gotoubun no Hanayome ∬: Natsu no Omoide mo Gotoubun. Nino's route contains a section in which she teaches snorkeling to Fuutaro, who comments with surprise (based on Chapter 50's precedent) that she's actually a perfectly competent swimmer. Her earlier struggle was more likely due to sudden thermal shock than lack of swimming proficiency.
* TheGadfly: Subverted. She ''tries'' to be one to Miku for fun but so far, Miku's only reactions to her teasings have either been [[DeadpanSnarker comical apathy]] or near tears, instead of cute annoyance like Nino always expected.
* GirlishPigtails: She has some of her hair tied up into twintails to signify her role as the {{Tsundere}} of the quintuplets. [[spoiler:As an adult in the epilogue, she styles her hair in low pigtails once it grows past shoulder length]].
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: Her pillow is surrounded by various plushies.
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:In Chapter 81, in response to Ichika betraying Miku's trust and sabotaging her attempt to confess to Fuutarou, she claims that she would've supported any relationship that might emerge between Fuutarou and one of her sisters, even if he did not choose her. Her actual response to a person being picked --namely, with Yotsuba-- shows [[SoreLoser the opposite behavior, but not without a reason.]]]]
* GrudgingThankYou: Of a sort; in Chapter 12, she tells Fuutarou with a scowl in her face "[[PunctuatedForEmphasis Good. Job. Back. There.]]" when he brings Ichika back so they can share some fireworks together at the park.
* HatesBeingAlone: A downplayed example. She feels that her sisters have distanced themselves from her since the time they were children, and she's not happy about it. Part of her early antagonism towards Fuutarou comes from the fact that she fears he will drive the wedge between them even further.
* HimeCut: She has blunt bangs, bra strap length sidelocks, and hip length straight hair. A suiting hairstyle for a rich girl.
* {{Hypocrite}}: [[spoiler:When Ichika pulls a NotSoDifferentRemark on Nino to excuse her own attempt to sabotage Miku's relationship with Fuutarou for her own gain, Nino retorts that she would support any sister who won in the end. After he chooses Yotsuba, Ichika takes Nino's words to heart and accepts her loss, while Nino herself smacks Yotsuba and remains hostile over the issue for a while.]]
* IHatePastMe: After falling for Fuutarou, she takes a dim view towards her previous bad treatment of him, and resolves to make up for it by being as zealously nice to him as possible.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: While she does want to hook up with Fuutarou, she values her bond with her sisters just as much, and states that she would've supported any relationship that Fuutarou might cultivate with one of her sisters, even if she was not chosen. [[spoiler: Deconstructed with Yotsuba being the one Fuutarou picks as when Yotsuba tries to apologize over it, she threatens to disown her as a sister. Her anger mainly comes from the fact that she was picked despite not doing much (if at all) to show any romantic interest in him compared to herself, Miku, and Ichika. Nino is fully aware that the aforementioned two are also vying for his affections. She never thought that Yotsuba's into the fray as well.]]
* IdolSinger: She dresses up and performs like one at the start of Chapter 99 during the opening ceremony of the school festival. Chapter 103 reveals that Yotsuba was initially supposed to do this, having volunteered, but took on too many obligations, forcing Nino to perform in her stead.
* IgnoringBySinging: She does this at the start of Chapter 94 when [[spoiler:Ichika announces that she is dropping out of school due to an acting job]].
* ImageSong:
** [[https://files.catbox.moe/i6fjci.mp3 Him and you ~ Fate will not come a second time ~]], for Season One.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VYdHqitQIM Two Hearts]], for Season Two.
* ImportantHaircut: She'd initially kept her hair long to retain some attachment from the period where the quintuplets looked identical. In Chapter 46, after her heart to heart with Miku, she decides it is now the time for her to say goodbye to the past and prompts Miku to cut her hair down to shoulder-length. This also allows her to quit the track team on Yotsuba's behalf, after they had seen through Itsuki's attempted disguise because her hair was much longer than Yotsuba's.
* InnocentlyInsensitive:
** Her very (unintentionally) harsh remarks about Miku's bad cooking skills were originally meant to be her way of playfully teasing Miku to get an angry reaction out of her as she expected, but she just wound up getting Miku teary-eyed and nearly crying instead, [[OhCrap prompting her to take it back the moment she sees her expression]].
** When she bluntly refuses to take the practice exams Fuutarou made for her (even ripping one of them in half to emphasize her point), she seems genuinely surprised when Itsuki says that he wrote them all by hand because he doesn't have a printer or photocopier. It's heavily implied, if not confirmed, that unlike Itsuki she's not fully aware of how bad Fuutarou's economical situation is.
** [[spoiler:Her comments to Ichika while asking her for love advice, especially her assertion that she'd prioritize her own love over someone who's loved her crush longer and her decision to try and kiss Fuutarou to get him to return her feelings, are unintentionally insensitive since Ichika ''also'' has a crush on Fuutarou.]]
* {{Irony}}:
** Despite hating Fuutarou, when she sees his picture from when he was younger, she immediately declares him to be her type under the misunderstanding that it's a picture of his cousin. Fuutarou just plays along with it.
** [[spoiler:She is both the last of the quintuplets to accept Fuutarou as their tutor and the first of them to give a LoveConfession to Fuutarou that sticks.]]
** In Chapter 24, both she and Itsuki balk at the notion of going into a bath with Fuutarou. Come the Scrambled Eggs arc, however, no prizes for guessing which two quintuplets wind up doing exactly that.
** [[spoiler:She once condescendingly told Fuutarou that there would probably be "at least one girl on this vast world" that will fall in love with a "[[BrutalHonesty guy with zero tact]]" like him, only to eventually end up falling for him herself. She even [[LampshadeHanging lampshades this]] during her LoveConfession in Chapter 60 by adding "Well, that's me! Too bad, huh."]]
* IrrationalHatred: Her behavior towards Fuutarou tends to come off as this in the early chapters. Unlike Itsuki, who (despite bad first impressions) tried to be nice only for him to reply rudely, Nino tends to be mean ''without'' provocation (as in, he had done nothing to her personally to earn her dislike), and actively tries to sabotage their sessions to get him fired.
* IUhYouToo: Defied. [[spoiler:After she realizes Fuutarou didn't hear her LoveConfession, she repeats it out loud to get the message across]].
* JerkassHasAPoint: In hindsight, her concerns about Fuutarou's arrival potentially disrupting the bond between she and her sisters were not so unfounded after all (even though it wasn't really ''his'' fault).
* JerkassRealization: It takes a while to sink in, but it's implied that when Fuutarou (disguised as Kintarou) tells her that he doesn't care about studying and just wants her and her sisters to be together, she starts to realize not only that he genuinely cares for them, but also that her own attitude is driving her sisters away.
* JerkassToOne: Not the friendliest person around to begin with, but she REALLY doesn't like Fuutaro. Whereas the other sisters ([[EveryoneHasStandards even Itsuki]]) are at the very least either somewhat friendly/respectful to Fuutaro at best or indifferent towards him at worst, Nino just flat out hates him. And does everything in her power to sabotage his attempts at teaching. She does gradually grow out of this over the course of Season 2 however. [[spoiler: And after falling in love with him, the trope is done away with altogether.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Though still somewhat abrasive, she really does love her sisters and it shows, with most of her hostility towards Fuutarou being rooted in her deep-seated fear of him changing her sisters and taking them away from her. After some character development on her end, she becomes a lot nicer and a lot less apprehensive towards Fuutarou.
* LoveAtFirstSight: She falls for Kintarou upon first meeting him in person, after he [[RescueRomance finds her when she gets lost in the forest during the test of courage, and saves her from falling off a cliff]].
* LoveConfession: [[spoiler:''Twice'' in the span of two chapters. She initially confesses to Fuutarou at the end of Chapter 59, but the following chapter reveals that he really didn't hear her over the wind while they were riding on a motorcycle rather than just pretending to miss it. She was just about to leave it at that, but then she suddenly turns around and confesses properly and unambiguously. Fuutarou is left stunned into monosyllables.]]
* LoveEpiphany: She has a crush on "Kintarou" (which is just Fuutarou in a blond wig), but after she learns the truth, she struggles with the realization that she is in love with Fuutarou. [[spoiler:She comes to terms with her feelings in Chapter 59, [[LoveConfession outright telling him that she's in love with him]], and repeats it again in the following chapter upon realizing that he didn't hear the first confession.]]
* LoveFreak: Surprisingly, Nino has a very idealized outlook on love, pining for a knight in shining armor partner. She insists that for everyone in the world there is someone who will love them, and is moved to tears after hearing Fuutarou's story of his first love.
* LovesMyAlterEgo: In the early chapters, she has an acrimonious relationship with Fuutarou, but she quickly falls for his "cousin," Kintarou, who is in actuality Fuutarou wearing a blonde wig.
* MaamShock: A variation. When they're playing house with the daughter of Ichika's manager, the kid suggests that Nino and Itsuki play the role of her grandmas. Nino's response is [[RubberFace to pull on her cheeks]].
* MoralMyopia: In Chapter 46, she tells Miku that she can't forgive Fuutarou for putting on a disguise (as "Kintarou") to fool her. Considering that [[TwinSwitch she and the others do that all the time]] (as Miku quickly points out) she has no room to talk.
* NeverMyFault: After her spat with Itsuki and running away from their home, she yells at Fuutarou that it's all ''his'' fault and that she wishes he'd never shown up in their lives. As shown in later chapters, she finds it easier to shift the blame on him rather than accepting it's her own attitude driving her sisters away.
* NotSoSimilar: [[spoiler:Her response to Ichika's NotSoDifferentRemark. While she made it clear she was going to fight for Fuutarou's love with everything she had, [[EveryoneHasStandards the one line she wouldn't cross would be betraying or hurting her sisters on purpose]], like Ichika did with Miku. That said, once she calms down and they talk things out the following day, she [[SubvertedTrope admits to the possibility of acting the same way as Ichika did, had their positions been reversed]]]].
* ObfuscatingStupidity: She's gullible, but she's not stupid. After the second encounter with "Kintarou", she invites him over to her hotel room and pretends that she's too nervous to talk to him half the night, gives him the bracelet that the "Rena" returned to him, then calls down Fuutarou to the lobby to talk and offers him a drink. In that moment, she exposes Fuutarou's lie and then reveals she knew the whole night before leaving him in a spiked drink stupor.
* PetTheDog: Her lie to Maruo about passing the midterms comes off as this, especially since a few days ago she was actively trying to sabotage the study sessions to get Fuutarou fired.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: [[spoiler:After [[WhenYouComingHomeDad Maruo informs her that he won’t be coming home again]], along with her mother being dead and Ichika seemingly leaving, she practically begs Fuutarou not to leave her, fearing that everyone else will eventually leave as well. And this is after he decides to leave after [[JerkassFacade her push-pull]] [[PlayingHardToGet technique]] [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere backfires.]]]]
* ProudBeauty: Downplayed. She doesn't actually exploit her attractiveness, but it's clear she's aware of it. In a twist, [[spoiler:she actually uses it to snap Miku out of her self-pity state, pointing out that if ''one'' of them is cute, all of them are]].
* TheReliableOne: Nino handles most of the household tasks for quintuplets, preparing meals and actively looks out for their best interests. She also seems to have the most practical sense of the sisters, often suggesting the most down to earth advice that is ultimately the most successful. Fuutaro himself comments in Gotoubun no Hanayome ∬: Natsu no Omoide mo Gotoubun that Nino is normally the most thorough practical thinker of the five.
* RescueRomance: The progression of her relationship with Fuutarou from antagonistic to falling for him contains some events that can be construed as this trope. To wit:
** In Chapter 5, Fuutarou performs a DivingSave to shield her from a stack of books that were about to fall on top of her because she unintentionally dislodged them by hitting the wall of the cabinet in which they were stored.
** In Chapter 8, during the fireworks festival, when she gets jostled by the festivalgoers and winds up being separated from her sisters, Fuutarou pulls her out from the crowd and gets her to hold onto him so that he can safely lead her to the rooftop she rented to watch the fireworks.
** In Chapter 25, when she gets lost in the forest during the test of courage, Fuutarou is mistaken as his "cousin" Kintarou because he forgot to take off his blond wig and locates her. In the following chapter, when she sees what she thinks is a clearing in the forest and runs towards it, she almost falls off a cliff, but is saved once again by Fuutarou when he grabs her arm and pulls her back up. This in turn causes ''him'' to nearly fall off, but Nino grabs the charm Raiha made for him to rescue him. This all causes her to [[LoveAtFirstSight fall for Kintarou]] and she invites him to dance with her at the bonfire.
** In Chapter 50, after jumping into the water to save Fuutarou, she begins to drown after being overwhelmed by the freezing water, prompting him to save her and help her back onto land. After being saved, Nino has a LoveEpiphany about the fact that Kintarou is Fuutarou.
** In Chapter 54, while shopping at a supermarket with Fuutarou and Yotsuba, the latter realizes that she needs to use the bathroom and runs off to do so, while shoving the heavy bag of rice she was carrying into Nino's arms. Having this weight suddenly dumped onto her, along with wearing high heeled shoes, causes Nino to nearly fall, but Fuutarou manages to catch her. This act visibly unnerves Nino, as it reminds her of Kintarou, making her realize that she is unable to separate them mentally. She also then talks about her fantasy of having a romance with a partner like a prince charming riding on a horse, and her mental image said prince incidentally resembles Kintarou.
** In Chapter 59, after passing her exams, she leaves to speak to her father, being under the impression that Fuutarou dislikes her for her past behavior towards him and thinking that she won't see him again given that he has fulfilled his role as her tutor. When her father attempts to enforce his ideals upon her, however, Fuutarou shows up on a motorcycle and extricates Nino from the situation. It is at this point where Nino decides that she no longer wants to sever ties with Fuutarou and delivers her LoveConfession to him.
* SiblingTeam: [[spoiler:Runs a cake shop with Miku five years after graduation.]]
* SlippingAMickey: Nino has twice drugged Fuutarou with sleeping agents to hinder his involvement with her.
* SpitTake: Her response to [[spoiler:hearing Fuutarou saying that he loves her and her sisters.]]
* StealthPun: She wears two butterfly-shaped ribbons in her hair, and is quite successful at making friends compared to her sisters. Yotsuba flat-out states that she's quite the ''social butterfly''.
* SupremeChef: She is an excellent cook and baker, which contrasts with Miku and Fuutarou, who are awful at it. Sort of wasted on Fuutarou, however, as he has a bland sense of taste due to being raised in a poor family eating cheap food. [[spoiler:This trait ended up helping her when she and Miku compete for a job in a pastry shop where Fuutarou works and it is a cooking contest]].
* SweetTooth: Her preference for sweeter black tea gets her painted as one by Miku. [[spoiler:Also, her ending in the first videogame has her asking Fuutarou out on a date and heading to a chocolate shop that she seems to visit frequently]].
* TeamMom: The volume 3 extra showed that she has to become this since the other sisters are particularly bad at housework. Also, her initial resistance towards Fuutarou stems from not wanting to be separated from the sisters. Taking away the link from her sisters, Fuutarou is surprised to find out that they are able to communicate smoothly.
* TheOneThatGotAway: [[spoiler:While Ichika and Miku finally move forward for their feelings towards Fuutarou five years later, Nino still has struggles over it.]]
* ThickerThanWater: Of the quintuplets, Nino's opinionated personality is the most likely to incite conflict, but she always makes amends with her sisters because she subscribes to her mother's words to always stick together.
* ThroughHisStomach: While she initially invokes this ironically by first feeding Fuutarou cookies to distract him from the fact that she drugged his water, and then by challenging Miku to a cooking contest to keep her from studying with Fuutarou, she later utilizes this trope for real after [[spoiler:falling for him]].
* TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:Once she realizes that she's in love with Fuutarou and confesses to him, she becomes significantly nicer to him. She also becomes what Ichika refers to as a "Runaway Train of Love", applying her previous ruthlessness to her romantic pursuit of Fuutarou.]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Pancakes (food) and room temperature water (drink).
* {{Tsundere}}: The Harsh type. Unlike Itsuki, she never completely drops the act, even after accepting Fuutarou as a part of their group, although her attitude towards him does soften up considerably. [[spoiler:Once she confesses to Fuutarou however, she starts to show him more of her "dere" side.]]
* WhatTheHellHero:
** [[spoiler:She tells off Ichika for betraying Miku's trust and her attempt to sabotage her on purpose when it comes to winning Fuutarou over. Nino even points out that despite also wanting Fuutarou for herself, she would never let herself hurt her sisters on purpose like what Ichika did since she considers the bond between the five of them more important than pursuing Fuutarou.]]
** [[spoiler:She calls out Yotsuba for apologizing for Fuutaro choosing her. She points out that Yotsuba knew how much she loved him and yet she decided to wait for him anyway.[[note]]In Yotsuba's defense, she did leave the room and only came back because she forgot her phone, but Fuutaro was already there.[[/note]]]]
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: [[spoiler:When Miku is sulking over her inability to openly confess to Fuutarou, Nino angrily tells her that she always viewed her as her rival, because she too is cute in her own way]].

The middle daughter. The most quiet and submissive of the quintuplets. Loves studying history thanks to the games she plays and is the second to accept Fuutarou as the quintuplets' official tutor.
----
* AbortedDeclarationOfLove:
** At one point she tries to ask Fuutarou out, but in context, he understandably misinterprets it as part of a game of "House" they were playing with a girl they were baby-sitting. While Ichika knew that Miku was being serious, Miku lets Fuutarou think it's part of the game and drops it.
** [[spoiler:Her plan of confessing to Fuutarou after getting the highest score on the final exam out of the quintuplets is derailed at the last second when she realizes that [[SpannerInTheWorks Ichika actually scored higher than her]].]]
* AngryCheekPuff: A {{Character Tic|}}. Miku is a ClingyJealousGirl who tends to puff her cheeks in peeved anger whenever other girls get too close to Fuutaro for her liking. Her other sisters (primarily Itsuki) aren't above doing this either, albeit to a much lesser extent.
* AthleticallyChallenged: Among her sisters, she's the weakest on the physical department (even more than Fuutarou, which is saying a lot).
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Downplayed, but when Yotsuba rather boldly [[RomanceInducingSmudge kissed Fuutarou on the cheek to wipe some cream]], she momentarily switched to {{Yandere}} mode, pouring an aura of bloodlust that left Yotsuba in a cold sweat. Also, when Nino refused to take the practice exams Fuutarou wrote for them (by hand, no less), she was about to jump Nino hadn't Fuutarou stopped her (and Itsuki beating her to the punch by slapping Nino herself).
* BoyfriendBluff: While disguised as Ichika, in order to repel Maeda from asking her to dance with him at the bonfire, she quickly claims that she is dating Fuutarou and has already agreed to dance with him instead.
* CantSpitItOut: Even as she becomes more confident in herself and in her affection for Fuutarou, Miku is unable to confess her feelings to him. As a result, Miku begins relying on building herself in ways that will attract Fuutarou to her rather than forcing herself to confess to him.
* ChangingYourselfForLove: A downplayed example. When she hears the type of girl that Fuutarou likes ("[[GenkiGirl Always Cheerful]]", "[[SupremeChef Good at cooking]]" and "[[BigBrotherWorship Cares about her big brother]]") she's left depressed because she's [[ShrinkingViolet the complete opposite]] [[LethalChef on two of those accounts]]. She spends the rest of the series trying to change that in order to become more attractive to him. And ultimately, this also benefits her as well, since by falling in love with Fuutarou, this also enables her CharacterDevelopment as seen below.
* CharacterDevelopment: She becomes more bold and confident in herself after interacting with Fuutarou. [[spoiler:Ultimately helps given her GracefulLoser mentality when Fuutarou chooses to pursue a relationship with Yotsuba, as Miku readily admits that falling in love with him gave her the conviction to trust herself.]]
* CharacterTic: She tends to [[AngryCheekPuff puff her cheeks]] or clench her fists whenever she's either angry or pouty, or whenever she's trying get her point across to Fuutarou by getting up close and personal with him. [[spoiler:It's the latter tic of hers that helps Fuutarou finally correctly identify her as the Fake Itsuki during the Scrambled Eggs arc.]]
* ChronicSelfDeprecation: She seems to value her self-worth in terms of how she performs in comparison to her sisters. Case in point, at the start of the story she considered herself the worst out of them until Fuutarou pointed out that she had gotten the highest score in the mock test he gave them. This seemed to bolster her confidence, and when she started developing feelings for him she was determined to get the highest grades in the final exams in order to confess to him. However, she backs off at the last second [[SpannerInTheWorks when Ichika ends up scoring higher than her]]. It comes to a head during the Sisters War arc, [[spoiler:when after finding out Ichika planned to sabotage her attempt to confess to Fuutarou, [[HeroicBSOD she breaks down into tears]] and confesses to Nino that she's always been afraid of being rejected, thinking that Fuutarou could never fall in love with someone like her]].
* ClingyJealousGirl: She gets pouty whenever another girl, especially one of her sisters, gets a little too close for comfort with Fuutarou.
** She even let out some killing intent when Yotsuba [[spoiler:[[AlmostKiss nearly gives him a smooch on his cheek]] because she was licking cream off his face]] in chapter 51.
** She lets out the same killing intent in Chapter 100. [[spoiler:She is seething when Takebayashi compares her relationship with Fuutarou to theirs, to the point where Yotsuba has to calm her down. She would've confronted her if Yotsuba, ironically enough, haven't beaten her to it. And in Chapter 106, she even confronts Fuutarou about his relationship with Takebayashi.]]
* ClosetGeek: She loves Sengoku Warlords, and is rather embarrassed for anyone to find out about it.
* TheComicallySerious: A large source of comedy when it comes to her character comes from her being this, saying and doing funny things without ever changing her expression at all.
* CordonBleughChef: Particularly when compared with her SupremeChef of a sister, Nino. In Chapter 5, Miku's attempt at making omelet rice is a mess but gets subverted with Fuutarou liking the taste just as much as Nino's dish due to his really bad taste buds. However, it's played straight later on in Chapter 23; when after cooking horribly burnt croquettes, Miku then has Fuutarou eat more and more to get it right until he finally comes down with a stomachache.
* CovertPervert: Despite being seemingly more innocent when it comes to matters of love, some of her thoughts lean her in this direction, such as not being against showing an intimately located beauty mark to Fuutarou and liking the idea of Fuutarou being aggressive with her.
* DeadpanSnarker: Usually towards Nino.
* DeathGlare: She has one that can match Nino's at times, especially [[ClingyJealousGirl if another girl gets close to Fuutarou]] or if someone insinuates that she is in love with him.
* DefeatEqualsFriendship: She initially refused to be tutored by Fuutarou, but he wins her over by running her ragged and proving that he is willing to look up enough history to [[BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame beat her at her own game]].
* DefrostingIceQueen: Like her sisters, she starts off as being frosty towards Fuutarou, but after he wins her over and she slowly falls for him, she begins acting considerably nicer to him than before.
* {{Determinator}}: Chapter 105 reveals that she expended considerable time and effort to improve her skills at making pancakes.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Chocolate. This actually becomes a problem to her since she wants to [[ChocolateOfRomance make chocolates for Fuutarou during Valentine's Day]], and she wants to make sure he finds them tasty.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Downplayed, but she doesn't like it whenever Ichika forces herself to push Fuutarou towards her (Miku) since Miku believes that all of them deserve a fair shot at Fuutarou while also saying that she wants to win him over with her own efforts instead.
* EmptyEyes: Often sports these in the manga (and Season 1 of the anime), due her demure personality and subdued expressions.
* EtTuBrute: [[spoiler:She's visibly very hurt by Ichika's betrayal of her trust in chapter 81.]]
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: She's aware that her sisters know that she's in love with Fuutarou, to the point that she's actually '' surprised'' [[ObliviousToLove Itsuki]] didn't until she flat out told her herself. [[spoiler:Fuutarou has also admitted to Yotsuba that he knows about her feelings for him, which is how he also knows that it [[OutOfCharacterAlert can't have been her]] who told him that Ichika was in love with him and that she would support their relationship.]]
* ExactWords: Yotsuba describes Miku as the smartest of the quintuplets. It's really more of a case of [[OverlyNarrowSuperlative being the best out of the worst.]]
* FatalFlaw: She can be very dedicated once she puts her mind into something. Problem is, she often tries to self-impose conditions for additional motivation (like deciding to confess to Fuutarou if she manages to get the highest grades), and when she's unable to fulfill them, it hurts her already fragile self-esteem.
* FighterMageThief: In an art spread that depicts the girls as traditional RPG classes, Miku is the Mage to Ichika's Thief and Itsuki's Fighter.
* FirstNameBasis: Miku from the beginning referred to Fuutarou by first name, possibly alluding to her disinterest in formalities, and the fact that she developed feelings for him very early on.
* FriendOrIdolDecision: Her wanting to "share" Fuutarou with her sisters as they all consider each other as "5 equal parts of a whole" conflicted her growing feelings for Fuutarou, at least, until chapter 30 where she realizes that she wants Fuutarou all to herself, knowing full well that she's doing this out of selfishness.
* FunbagAirbag: In Chapter 4, to try and lose Fuutarou who was chasing after her, she disguises herself as Yotsuba to distract him, causing Fuutarou to plough straight into her chest. Unlike most examples of this trope, however, she does not draw any attention to it.
* GamerChick: How she discovered her love for Sengoku period warlords.
* TheGlomp: [[spoiler:At the end of the Scrambled Eggs arc, when Fuutarou finally recognizes her as the fake Itsuki, she's so happy she ends up doing this]].
* GracefulLoser:
** [[spoiler:Despite being visibly unhappy about it since it derailed her plans of confessing to Fuutarou, she congratulates Ichika on scoring higher than her in their final exams, swearing to work even harder so that she wouldn't lose the next time.]]
** [[spoiler:She accepts Futaro's final choice of Yotsuba, and does her best to help Yotsuba accept her new relationship]].
* GrewASpine: Growing attached to and eventually falling for Fuutarou turned her into a more confident girl who's more forward with her feelings. Of the five quintuplets, Miku is the most honest and sure of her growing romantic feelings for Fuutarou, resolving to improve her grades so that she can graduate from being Fuutarou's student, to a woman he can see as an equal.
* HairColorDissonance: She initially has the same pink hair as her sisters, but later covers have her hair colored reddish-brown (and not even close to her sisters' color schemes). Also present in the second season of the anime, compared to the first one, see [[https://preview.redd.it/vx73lgsmigk41.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=0a2ccd816cb69343f1d45801c71821d3f2fc914e here]].
* HeadphonesEqualIsolation: Miku is initially the most withdrawn of the quintuplets (and is implied to have been bullied at her old school) and she's always seen wearing headphones, though she only ever wears them around her neck (in fact, an extra has stated that nobody has seen her [[GogglesDoNothing properly use them]]). It's later subverted as she opens up to Fuutarou, and even lends her headphones to Itsuki.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:The combination of both Ichika's betrayal and Yotsuba accidentally botching her attempt to confess during the school trip have left her in a despondent state in chapter 81, staying holed up in her hotel room crying her eyes out and refusing to answer either phone calls or knocks from anyone, including her sisters.]]
* HiddenDepths: Despite her usually stoic disposition, and Ichika being an actual actress, Miku is considered the best at doing impersonations of her sisters.
* HidingBehindYourBangs: Her hair covers her right eye. In this case, it's the "shy and demure" variant. At one point it's lampshaded by Nino, when Ichika tries to fix Itsuki's hair to look like Miku's, Nino points out that she did it wrong (covering the left eye instead).
* HighPressureEmotion: She is the pronest to this out of her sisters, likely due to the fact that she doesn't openly emote much. Fuutarou and any mention of him, tends to trigger this fairly often in her as well.
* IAmNotPretty: Owing to her low self-esteem, she doesn't view herself as cute (at least compared to Ichika and Nino, due to them being outgoing and popular). This only exacerbates her own insecurities about not being good enough to attract Fuutarou.
* IconicItem: Her headphones around her neck is a common gesture others use to refer to her.
* ImageSong:
** [[https://files.catbox.moe/8h22az.mp3 Lovely music ~ It was white until three weeks ago ~]], for Season One.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtYgSjqVOt0 Three Feelings]], for Season Two.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: She seems to lack any consciousness for personal appearances, having no problem taking off her clothes or appearing disheveled in front of Fuutarou. She also doesn't understand Nino's distress with being seen naked by him, brushing it off by saying that there's "not much to look at" where the quintuplets' shared physique is concerned. She has also never been shown to be upset with Fuutarou whenever he accidentally touches her chest.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Not unlike Fuutarou, her blunt manner of speaking leads her to come across as this.
* LethalChef: Bad to the point that some of the dishes she makes actually have ''skulls'' appearing on them, though she later improves after Nino teaches and helps her out. It is still noted in Chapter 74, however, that the bakery competing with Fuutarou's workplace experienced a sharp drop in customers after she started working there. By Chapter 77, however, she has improved sufficiently enough to bake bread that Yotsuba found to be rather delicious. Come Chapter 105, she manages to make pancakes for the school festival that are described as being better than expected.
* LoveConfession: [[spoiler:She finally delivers a successful confession to Fuutarou in Chapter 84, with the slight twist that he was already perfectly aware of her feelings. The chapter was simply about her gaining to courage to get them across properly.]]
* LoveEpiphany: Confesses to Ichika with all honesty that she loves Fuutarou in Chapter 31.
* MasterOfDisguise: Given the right accessories for it (like a ribbon for Yotsuba and a short wig for Ichika) she can near effortlessly [[TwinSwitch pass off as any of her sisters]] at any given time of the day as she can perfectly mimic them right down to their demeanors and personalities (yes, including her [[PolarOppositeTwins polar opposite]] ''[[GenkiGirl Yotsuba]]''). She's noted for being especially good at it too despite how she usually looks.
* {{Meido}}: When discussing about getting part-time jobs, she suggests working as one of these in a café. Yotsuba thinks she could be very popular, while Nino quickly shuts down the idea.
* MiddleChildSyndrome: Miku is squarely in the middle when it comes to the quintuplets' order of birth, and she's (initially) the most withdrawn of all of them.
* NiceGirl: While initially reluctant and resistant to Fuutarou's attempts to tutor her and her sisters, she becomes the second Nakano quintuplet after Yotsuba to accept him, while also becoming the first to openly fall for him. Her interactions with him after her first character arc have her either being wholeheartedly supportive of him, gentle with him, or worried for him. She's even seen helping an old woman cross the street in one chapter.
* PerpetualFrowner: Her default expression will always be emotionless or gloomy.
* PlayingHardToGet: As she reveals to Itsuki, her reason to tell Fuutarou in disguise that she wanted to cut ties with him was partially this, because she wanted him to see her as a girl and not as his student. During the scene of him trying to guess her identity, she's mentally begging him to please recognize her, as doing so would be an ActOfTrueLove.
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: Unlike her sisters that wear socks, Miku wears tights to go with her shy personality. Averted in one case when she takes them off because it is hot--without a thought of Fuutarou being inches away from her.
* TheQuietOne: She's the most withdrawn of the Nakano sisters, preferring to speak straightforwardly while uttering only a few words.
* ResortToPouting: While all five sisters can pout from time to time, it is particularly common of Miku Nakano as a part of her ClingyJealousGirl traits. She is especially prone to pouting when other girls, especially her sisters, get too close to Fuutaro for her liking.
* RunningGag: Her extremely poor stamina and endurance. Perhaps even more so than Fuutarou, any physical exertion leaves Miku haggard. Volume 7's introduction even states that climbing up the stairs to her new apartment on the second floor of the building tires her out.
* SelfDeprecation:
** As early as Chapter 4, she tells Fuutarou that she considers herself the worst out of her sisters (despite being the one who scored highest in the mock exam he gave them), showing her lack of confidence. Fuutarou manages to turn it around, saying that anything her sisters can do, she can do it too.
** It resurfaces again during the Sisters War arc; [[spoiler:she compares herself unfavorably to Ichika and Nino, as both of them are sociable, outgoing and popular, thinking that Fuutarou could never fall for someone like her]].
* ShrinkingViolet: She is quiet and very reserved.
* SiblingTeam: [[spoiler:Runs a Cake shop with Nino five years after graduation.]]
* TheStoic: She's the most reserved Nakano quintuplet and her expressions are mostly calm, if somewhat gloomy, though she ''can'' copy her sisters' expressions and mannerisms perfectly when she needs to, even [[GenkiGirl Yotsuba]]. [[NotSoStoic She does however]], get easily flustered whenever Fuutarou [[IDidntMeanToTurnYouOn catches her off-guard unknowingly]]. [[spoiler:And in the hot spring arc, when Fuutarou is able to figure out that she was the Fake Itsuki she gets happy and glomps him.]]
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Though the quintuplets have identical faces, it's Miku who resembles their mother the most by virtue of her sharing their mother's hairstyle in their teen years, making Miku look like a much younger version of Rena.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Sort of, as she's rather shy than aloof. She's quiet and seemingly inexpressive to strangers but is a total sweetheart when she opens up.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial:
** When she's posing as Ichika to reject Maeda and decides to do a BoyfriendBluff with Fuutarou, after Maeda doesn't buy it and dares them to hold hands, she immediately does it and goes:
--->'''Miku''': You see... i-it's not like I wanted to hold his hand, but... it's not like it's the first time either!
** When she runs into Fuutarou in Chapter 61 near the grocery store that's closest to his home, she gives off this line (the anime has her speak [[MotorMouth making no pauses to breathe whatsoever]]):
--->'''Miku:''' I-It's not like I was hoping to run into you that I decided to go to a farther away store based on my memory of the time we came to pick you up. I was just walking and happened to find myself here.\
'''Fuutarou:''' (That's the most she's ever talked at once.)
* TearsOfJoy: Sheds these at the [[spoiler:end of the Scrambled Eggs arc, when Fuutarou finally figures out that she is the fake Itsuki solely through her behavior and mannerisms, fulfilling what the quintuplets' grandfather defined as "love" by caring enough to learn how to differentiate them]].
* ThroughHisStomach: In Chapter 21, she makes burnt croquettes and prompts Yotsuba and Fuutarou to try them. While the former complained about the taste, the latter complimented her on it due to his bad taste buds. The former's criticism and inability to lie prompts her to keep making them and trying to invoke this trope to the latter, as Fuutarou previously stated that one of his desired qualities in a girl was being a good cook. Regardless of how Fuutarou found the taste of Miku's food, he winds up getting sick anyway, as Miku [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome is still]] a LethalChef. Come Chapter 77, however, her skills have improved to the point that she can bake pretty good bread, which she intends to use to invoke this trope towards Fuutarou during the school trip to Kyoto.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Matcha (food) and green tea (drink).
* TrueBlueFemininity: Her color motif.
* UnkemptBeauty: In one of their arguments, Nino accuses Miku of not caring about her appearance, wearing simple and cheap older clothes. Miku's response is to imply that Nino is shallow for her manicures.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Her initial thoughts on love is that why people date the people they like, a statement that even Fuutarou found it surprising.
* WhenSheSmiles: While not addressed in the manga proper, in her ending in the videogame [[spoiler:when she and Fuutarou work part-time as models for a wedding photo session, Fuutarou internally admits that she has a very beautiful smile]].

The second youngest daughter. A very helpful girl, but reluctant to really say what she wants. The first to accept Uesugi as a tutor, she does so without any problems.
----
* ThousandOrigamiCranes: She believes in making these as a good luck charm. In Chapter 13, she is seen folding them for a friend's friend that is sick in the hospital. In Chapter 74, she makes them as a birthday present for Fuutarou.
* AchievementsInIgnorance: [[spoiler:Regarding her relationship with Fuutarou. Unlike Ichika, Nino, and Miku, who put in effort to try and appeal to him and win his affections, Yotsuba does nothing of the sort: she treats him friendly and is very supportive of him but actively tries to not get too close, as she sees herself as unworthy of pursuing him romantically. Despite this, she is the one whom Fuutarou ultimately falls in love with and confesses to. Yotsuba's apparent lack of romantic interest in Fuutarou, and her not proactively doing anything to win his affections winds up becoming a point of contention between Nino and Yotsuba after the selection]].
* ApologizesALot: Tends to do this whenever she thinks her actions might inconvenience others.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:After meeting Fuutarou five years before the start of the series, Yotsuba tried to distinguish and distance herself from her sisters. When her sisters in unison decided to not let Yotsuba transfer schools alone, after Yotsuba was the only one who failed the make-up exams at their school, she stopped caring about her superiority complex and instead devoted herself to the unity of the quintuplets, even if that means not telling Fuutarou the truth, partly out of shame, but also because her sisters have fallen for him, too.]]
* BadBadActing:
** Is probably almost as bad as Itsuki at impersonating her sisters, particularly because she is [[BadLiar terrible at lying]]. To wit, during the Scrambled Eggs arc, she was consumed with worry over how well she could convincingly impersonate Itsuki and quickly gives herself away to Fuutarou when he asks her a leading question about the quintuplets' past. However, this does allow Fuutarou to eliminate her as the fake Itsuki as her concern during the vacation was rather trivial compared to what the fake Itsuki did. [[spoiler:She even asks Itsuki to pose as the girl Fuutarou met in Kyoto because she thought she would give herself away immediately.]]
** Subverted as later chapters would reveal that she is actually a pretty decent actress, being praised by the president of the Drama Club of their school. And while her lies are pretty noticeable by the reader, she actually has successfully convinced people (including her sisters) of her lies ''many'' times, which means that she is most likely a bad liar and actress ''only'' in front of Fuutarou.
* BadLiar: Chapter 21 is all about her being particularly bad at lying, [[spoiler:though she did have a successful attempt at the end of the chapter, where she lied that she joins the studying session in the first place because she likes Fuutarou]]. Chapter 90 shows that [[spoiler:she was not lying at all when she said that, as she has loved him since they met in Kyoto]].
* BerserkButton: Betrayal seems to be a big one for her. She openly states that people who break promises are the worst of the worst, and she's visibly upset in Chapter 80 when [[spoiler:she accuses Ichika of directly sabotaging Miku's attempts to confess to Fuutarou]]. This is most likely because [[spoiler:of her past, where her bad decisions and complex towards her sisters ended up having her almost expelled in their previous school and her sisters following her despite it meaning almost getting expelled themselves]].
* BreakTheHaughty: [[spoiler:Yotsuba used to think she was the "best" sister because of her higher grades at first and later athletic skill. This came crashing down when she was the only one to fail out of their private school and realized how her obsession with being special meant nothing if she was going to be alone.]]
* CannotSpitItOut: [[spoiler:Yotsuba instantly recognized Fuutarou when they meet again at the start of the series, but she doesn't reveal that she was the girl he met back in Kyoto, feeling ashamed that unlike him, she couldn't fulfill their promise to study and excel in school. She later doesn't dare telling him about her feelings for him, after noticing that her sisters are falling in love with him.]]
* CaringGardener: Her room, which is not revealed until Chapter 37, is filled with plants.
* TheChessmaster:
** A minor example, but Chapter 80 has her concocting a scheme to support Miku in spending time with Fuutarou. To wit, she won a card game against her sisters and using its condition, being able to get them to do what she wants, compelled Ichika, Nino, and Itsuki to go up [[https://www.reddit.com/r/5ToubunNoHanayome/comments/ba69mp/chapter_80s_kyoto_location_every_single/ the longer route]] to the summit of Mt. Inari from the Yotsutsuji intersection. Meanwhile, she and Miku took the shorter route, in order to meet Fuutarou at the summit before the other quintuplets do.
** Chapter 90 [[OnceMoreWithClarity revisits]] several past events in the series from Yotsuba's perspective, and reveals that [[spoiler:it was her idea to have Itsuki disguise herself as "Rena" with the intention of ending her romantic prospects with Fuutarou and have him focus on the present and her sisters.]]
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: She cannot say no to anyone who seems like they might need her help. Nino initially exploits this to lure her away from one of Fuutarou's sessions, by saying that the basketball team is short a player. The captain of the track team also tries to use this to guilt-trip her into staying in the club, forcing Nino to impersonate her in order to quit the club in her stead. During the school festival in the third year, she overworks herself to the point of collapsing and missing out the entire second day.
* ClassRepresentative: Come year 3 and she and Fuutarou and the sisters are in the same class, she volunteers to be it, and then volunteers Fuutarou to be the other one, much to his chagrin.
* ClingyJealousGirl: [[spoiler:She doesn't display her jealousy much especially once she tries to become a ShipperOnDeck for her sisters. However in Chapter 100 when Fuutarou was hanging out with Takebayashi, Yotsuba was trying to calm Miku down from hastily acting on her jealousy. Once Takebayashi starts to talk about how close she is to Fuutarou to Nino and Itsuki, it's Yotsuba, not Miku, who jumps in saying that she's the one closest to Fuutarou, before Itsuki interrupts and none of them actually hears what Yotsuba says. Miku however saw her do this but Yotsuba runs off before Miku has a chance to ask.]]
** [[spoiler:It could be said that when she saw Fuutarou with Ichika during the Kyoto trip five years ago, her jealousy and the fact that he thought Ichika was her spurred her on to start differentiating herself.]]
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: While her sisters have their own quirks, she stands out for being the most eccentric and air-headed out of them while being really cheerful about it.
* ComicalNapDrool: Does this in Chapter 86 while napping with her sisters on the bus.
* TheCorrupter: An innocently [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom unintentional example.]] [[spoiler:Her encouraging of Ichika to [[BeYourself become her old selfish self from their childhood again]] [[TookALevelInJerkass leads Ichika to betray Miku's trust behind her back while becoming a lot more underhanded in getting Fuutarou for herself]] later on.]]
* CrashIntoHello: Bordering on TheGlomp, at the start of Episode 9 she tackles Fuutarou from the back while calling out for him.
* CuteButCacophonic: Her high-pitched and screechy voice is one of her defining traits.
* CutenessProximity: Like Itsuki, she adores Fuutarou's kid sister Raiha.
* DarkHorseVictory: [[spoiler: Even though Yotsuba gave the impression of being the love interest who is only there to fill in, almost always having the role of Sidekick, she is the one who stays with the male lead, even defeating Ichika who gave the impression of being the "Main Girl."]]
* DelayedReaction: It can take a while for the implications of certain statements to sink in for her.
* TheDitz: Despite being the most enthusiastic in being taught be Fuutarou, she also gets the lowest grades out of her sisters; her test grade in Chapter 2? '''''Eight''''' out of one-hundred. Additionally in Chapter 20, not only she has the lowest overall grades out of her sisters again, her score in mathematics is '''''Nine''''' out of one-hundred. She is also incredibly gullible and tends to take things people say at face value. [[spoiler:Later chapters strongly imply [[ObfuscatingStupidity this is all a front, though]].]]
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Green peppers.
* DumbIsGood: Academically, Yotsuba struggles the most amongst her sisters, but she is also likely the most genuinely kind and earnest of the quintuplets.
* DumbJock: She's athletically skilled and talented enough in sports that both the basketball team and the track team wanted her to join them full time after they enlisted her in helping them out on two separate occasions. The track team captain even had to resort to guilt-tripping her just so she would stay permanently. As good as she is at sports, though, she's also [[TheDitz the ditziest]] of the quintuplets.
* ExpressiveAccessory: In the anime, her hair ribbon is seen to twitch on occasion and droop when she feels deflated.
* ExtremeDoormat: She puts others first before herself and during Labour Day with Fuutarou, he pointed out that most of the dates consist of what she thought about the sister and never about herself.
* FirstGirlAfterAll: While Itsuki is the girl that Fuutarou meets first on-page and Miku is the first on-page to fall for him, [[spoiler:Yotsuba was the girl Fuutarou met in Kyoto, who inspired him to work hard and become a good student, who could support his family once he got rich. At least in Raiha's opinion, she was Fuutarou's FirstLove, and the feelings were mutual. However, even though Yotsuba recognized him immediately when they met again, she decided to not pursue a romantic relationship with him out of consideration for her sisters and because she is ashamed that she could not keep her promise with Fuutarou. She's loved him ever since, meaning that she and not Miku was the first to fall for Fuutarou.]]
* FirstGirlWins: [[spoiler:She is the one who marries Fuutarou]].
* FoodAsBribe: In Chapter 72, to dispel a rumor about her dating Fuutarou because they spend a lot of time together as class representatives, Yotsuba tries to convince Itsuki to take her place as by offering her a croquette roll. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Itsuki also takes and eats the roll anyway.
* GamerChick: While Miku was hinted to be the one who played a video game about Sengoku Warlords, Miku mentioned specifically that she borrowed the game from Yotsuba which may indicate Yotsuba herself dabbles in gaming.
* GenkiGirl: The most cheerful of the quintuplets. [[spoiler:[[SubvertedTrope This might not all be genuine though]], as later chapters reveal she has experienced a lot of emotional pain, but she has been hiding it under a [[StepfordSmiler happy face.]]]]
* GoofyPrintUnderwear: Ichika mentions early on that she still wears her bear panties from junior high. At one point, she tries to blackmail her using a pair that may or may not be the same ones (Yotsuba's head obscures them, so we don't get to see them, but her reaction heavily implies they are).
* GoroawaseNumber: Is occasionally seen wearing a shirt or hoodie with the number 428 on it. In Japanese, the number can be phonetically pronounced as yo-tsu-ba, thus spelling out her own name.
* GrewASpine: In the Seven Goodbyes arc, while she initially struggles to reject the track team captain's persuasions to continue with track activities (even at the detriment to everyone's grades), and despite being given an easy way out by Nino rejecting the captain in her place, Yotsuba decides that she also needs to start standing up for herself, and ends up quitting the track team on her own.
* GuiltComplex: Her FatalFlaw.
** [[spoiler:As the later chapters show, she ''heavily'' blames herself for her sisters' current struggles, since she knows they lied about cheating in their exams when they legitimately passed, and she feels she's dragging them down. Not being able to keep the promise she made with Fuutarou as children despite her best efforts doesn't help matters, either]].
** During the Kyoto trip, [[spoiler:she feels guilty for having told Ichika to be more selfish in her pursuit of Fuutarou, unaware that her eldest sister would go as far as trying to sabotage Miku's attempt to confess. She also realizes that, even though she wanted everyone to be happy during the trip, she was supporting Miku the most because of her shyness, not thinking about how the others would feel about it]].
** Also, during the Kyoto trip [[spoiler:she accidentally lets it slip that Miku is in love with Fuutaro, not knowing that Fuutaro was behind her, causing Miku to run off crying. She blames herself for this, even though it was Ichika's fault for causing the incident in the first place.]]
** [[spoiler: After Fuutarou and Yotsuba confess their feelings after the school festival, she says she can't start dating him yet and in the next chapter we see why. Yotsuba feels guilty that she basically stole Fuutarou from the other girls, mainly Nino and Miku, so she wants their blessing first before dating. It obviously becomes complicated especially with Nino. And as Miku says, doing this does nothing but hurt Fuutarou who had to make a difficult choice and originally thought romance wasn't worth it.]]
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: [[spoiler:Zigzagged. While she did initially put genuine effort in trying to live up to the promise she made with Fuutarou, and studied as hard as she could, she eventually discovered that she could not get good grades at any of her subjects, and was beaten at them by her sisters. Instead, she went on to use her natural athletic skills and joined as many school clubs as possible, completely neglecting her studies. This wound up causing her to be the only quintuplet who was expelled from school. However, while her efforts to study failed to produce good grades, because of the hard work she put into sports, her athleticism is leaps and bounds above that of her sisters.]]
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: [[spoiler:Chapter 88 reveals that Yotsuba became obsessed with being different and "better" than her sisters after Fuutarou was unable to tell the difference between her and Ichika, despite having spent a whole day together and opened to each other before that. It's also implied that Ichika being a BigSisterBully to her (often taking her sweets, stickers and even her friends) factored into this.]]
* ImTakingHerHomeWithMe: Due to how much she adores Raiha, she has occasionally flirted with harebrained ideas to make her her sister, such as marrying Fuutarou or faking the family registry.
* ImageSong:
** [[https://files.catbox.moe/7skccv.mp3 Shape of the heart ~ Four leaf clover ~]], for Season One.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpYKg6G9T4c Love Four U]], for Season Two.
* ImportantHairAccessory: Her hair ribbon. It was what she used to first set herself apart from her sisters. [[spoiler:In the final chapter, she decides to ditch it, believing that she doesn't need it anymore to stand out as Fuutarou is able to tell her apart from her sisters]].
* ImportantHaircut: Chapter 89 reveals that she cut her hair just before transferring into her new school and deciding to change her mindset from being self-centered to devoting her energies towards her sisters' happiness instead.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: [[spoiler:Chapters 88 and 89 shows that she started to grow obsessed with being the best of the sisters after seeing Fuutarou hanging out with Ichika without telling the difference between them. As the years goes on and her sisters start to get better grades, she gets more and more involved in sports so she can continue believing that she's special and the best.]]
* InsecureLoveInterest: [[spoiler:Yotsuba doesn't reveal her past with Fuutarou, because one, she feels ashamed to failing in academics, while Fuutarou has become a top grade student, and two, because she realizes that Miku, Ichika and later Nino have all fallen for Fuutarou, too, and she [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy prioritizes their happiness over her own]], especially [[TheAtoner after they decided to transfer schools with her after she was the only one who failed despite her cold treatment of them]].]] It extends to the point that [[spoiler:when all five sisters wait in different rooms so that Fuutarou can confess to one privately, she's so sure she's not the one that she leaves before the designated time. When she has to go back and realizes that she ''is'' his choice, she runs away out of guilt]].
* ItsAllMyFault: [[spoiler:The real reason the Nakanos transferred out of their previous school wasn't because they all flunked their grades: it was because only Yotsuba did, and since her sisters refused to separate from her, they all decided to transfer out with her by falsely claiming that they cheated on the exam. Since then, Yotsuba believes that [[TheLoad she's holding her sisters back]] and that if it hadn't been for her, they all would have stayed at their more prestigious school instead of their current one.]]
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Chapter 90 reveals that [[spoiler:she has always been in love with Fuutarou, but feels that she has no right to express those feelings at the risk of her sisters' happiness after what they've done for her in spite of the way she treated them.]]
* LastNameBasis: Yotsuba is, along with Itsuki, one of two sisters who keep calling Fuutarou by his family name. She noticeably uses the honorific "-san", while Itsuki at least uses the more casual "-kun", even though Yotsuba was the first quintuplet who socialized with him. [[spoiler:In hindsight, this is one of the ways Yotsuba tries to keep her distance to Fuutarou. When they met five years before the series, she called him by his name, and at the end of Chapter 90, she switches to "Fuutarou-kun", like she did in the past.]]
* LeastIsFirst: Of the quintuplets, Yotsuba, the sister with the worst grades by far, is the first to support Fuutarou as their tutor. [[spoiler:This is revealed to be because Yotsuba has the most drive to improve her grades, guilt-ridden after her poor grades forced the girls to move schools in the first place.]]
* LoveAtFirstSight: At the end of Chapter 90, she states that [[spoiler:she has had romantic feelings for Fuutarou ever since their brief encounter in Kyoto as children]].
* MatchmakerCrush: An interesting twist, because Yotsuba [[spoiler:has loved Fuutarou long before any of her other sisters did. However, she fully supports her sisters and Fuutarou in their relationships, even though she still has romantic feelings for him.]]
* {{Mummy}}: She dresses up like one for the courage test during the school trip. Might also count as SeductiveMummy given that she actually looks pretty cute in the costume, complete with a bandage ribbon to replace her usual one.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: During the field trip, she split a large amount of logs all on her own without tiring. She even called it fun. In Chapter 80, she managed to carry Miku by piggyback all the way [[https://www.reddit.com/r/5ToubunNoHanayome/comments/ba69mp/chapter_80s_kyoto_location_every_single/ up the right path]] from the Yotsutsuji intersection to the summit of Mt. Inari, a 500 m distance.
* NiceGirl: The first Nakano to open up to and welcome Fuutarou wholeheartedly without hesitation. She's arguably the nicest out of her sisters.
* TheNoseKnows: At one point is able to track down Nino solely by the scent of her perfume.
-->'''Nino:''' Are you a hound or something?!
* NotSoAboveItAll: [[spoiler:Despite trying to push her own feelings for Fuutarou away, during the few moments where she's certain she can get away with it, she indulges in those feelings. She will then try to play it off as something else, often using her own quirks to try to deflect any further suspicion. This was especially evident when she kissed Fuutarou under the bell while everyone was dressed up as Itsuki as she can conveniently claim that it was someone else.]]
* ObliviousGuiltSlinging: In chapter 75, Yotsuba is making paper cranes for Fuutarou's birthday present, despite the sisters having agreed to hold off on giving his presents until after the upcoming exams. Upon being reminded of their agreement by Ichika and Nino, Yotsuba tearfully apologizes while swearing that she wasn't trying to pull a fast one, and that people who break their promises are the worst, completely unaware that both Ichika and Nino (and Miku, as it turns out) were planning on ''exactly that''.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Chapter 90 reveals that [[spoiler:she knew that Fuutarou was seeking out the girl he met in Kyoto, but did not reveal herself as that girl, as she believed that she had forfeited any right to be with Fuutarou romantically after failing to live up to the promise they made as children and seeing most of her sisters starting to develop feelings for him and trying to win his love. Instead, she had Itsuki pretend to be "Rena" and say goodbye to Fuutarou, as her way of trying to sever any romantic prospects he might have had for her.]]
** Arguably, she shows this even as early as the first chapter. When Fuutarou asks her how she knows his name, she uses the exam he dropped to dodge the question, [[ExactWords never actually saying that she learned it from there]].
* PaperThinDisguise: Curiously, whenever any of her sisters disguise themselves as her, all they do is simply wear a hair ribbon just like hers, without even bothering to change their hairstyles or wear a wig to match her hairstyle. This has managed to fool everyone this disguise was used on, except for the track team captain. Contrast that with the disguises employed by the quintuplets to pose as any of the other sisters, which usually entail some form of hair alteration or a wig.
* PassionateSportsGirl: She's very talented at sports, to the point that both the basketball team and the track team want her to join them.
* ReflectiveEyes: At one point during Fuutarou and Yotsuba's conversation in Chapter 56, there's a close-up reaction panel of her face with Fuutarou reflected in her eye.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: The Energetic Girl to Fuutarou's Savvy Guy. She's often trying to cheer him up and get him to smile more and have fun.
* SheepInSheepsClothing: Early on, Fuutarou did entertain the possibility that she ''might'' be feigning her ChronicHeroSyndrome to excuse herself from attending his study sessions, making her ''even worse than Nino''. He is eventually reassured of Yotsuba's authenticity after witnessing her turn down an invitation to join the basketball club permanently, as she cited the study sessions as a greater obligation she had to fulfill.
* SignatureLaugh: Sometimes she giggles "shishishi" when she's up to something mischievous (like trying to make Fuutarou's scares more effective in the {{Kimodameshi}}). Doubles as a pun, since "Shi" is an AlternateCharacterReading for the kanji of "Four" in Japanese.
* SleepSquashing: At the start of Chapter 52, with the quintuplets all having to share a room in their new apartment, she rolls on top of Miku and punches her in the face. All while asleep.
* SoMuchForStealth: In Chapter 56, Yotsuba sneaks away and hides on a ferris wheel during the group's trip to an amusement park. Fuutarou is able to find her because even though she was bent down, he could still see her hair ribbon sticking up over the back of the seat.
* StepfordSmiler: There are hints here and there that she's this despite her cheerful demeanor.
** It comes to a head in Chapter 56 [[spoiler:where she reveals to Fuutarou that she thinks she's holding her sisters back as her flunking her grades in her previous school was the very reason they all transferred in the first place. The guilt's been gnawing at her since.]]
** In Chapter 72 her classmates rumor whether she is going out with her fellow class representative, Fuutarou. When she brings the rumor up to Fuutarou, he mentions that he can no longer ridicule other people's feelings of love, but immediately rejects the idea that he could be in love with Yotsuba. When Yotsuba's classmates directly ask her about her relationship with Fuutarou, she drops her usual speech pattern and repeats what Fuutarou said to her, all with a sad smile on her face. Considering in Chapter 90, [[spoiler:it's revealed that she was the girl Fuutarou met in Kyoto five years prior, and that she has loved him since that day, it's obvious how hurt she was, when she rejected the idea that she and Fuutarou could be together.]]
--->'''Yotsuba:''' Hell no. There's no way that'd happen.
** [[spoiler: To make it worse, it's later revealed she feels unworthy of pursuing the guy she's loved for years, Fuutarou, because he was able to keep their childhood promise to become great at academics while she failed miserably.]] This is pointed to in the Volume 10 cover, which shows Yotsuba [[FingerForcedSmile using her fingers to pull her face into a painfully fake smile]].
** In Chapter 37, Yotsuba shows Fuutarou the AbandonedPlayground, specifically the [[TraumaSwing swing]], where she goes to [[RunningAwayToCry whenever she feels lonely or sad]]. Chapter 90 [[spoiler:shows her keep coming back to the swing with a smile on her face, telling herself that she is really happy to see her sisters realizing what a great guy Fuutarou is (and falling for him). The fact that she keeps coming back while saying she is fine with stepping aside, despite her feelings for Fuutarou, makes it obvious that she is not fine at all.]]
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: [[spoiler:Considering that she started focusing on extracurricular activities as much as she could, it's no surprise that her grades suffered, given that she wouldn't have time for everything no matter how hard she tried.]]
* TearfulSmile: [[spoiler:Sports one of these during Chapter 90, as she tries to convince herself that she's fine with Fuutarou falling for one of her sisters instead of her, despite being in love with him for the longest time]].
* TearsOfJoy: In Chapter 56, [[spoiler:after it's revealed that she was the reason all quintuplets transferred school, she cries out of relief and happiness after passing all subjects.]] After Chapter 89 shows [[spoiler:her being beaten by her sisters [[HardWorkHardlyWorks despite her efforts to study]], this gains a new dynamic, when the reader learns that she and Fuutarou made a promise in the past to become top grade students.]]
-->'''Yotsuba:''' (''crying'') For the first time... I feel like my efforts were rewarded.
* TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:She took one pre-series as before she was haughty and looked down on her sisters by thinking she was the "best". After flunking from their prestigious school and her sisters decided to follow her, she threw away that mindset and focused on living for her sisters.]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Mikan (food) and carbonated juice (drink).
* TraumaSwing: Chapter 90 has Yotsuba go to the playground at night on her own and use the swing, musing to herself that she is happy [[spoiler:her sisters recognize Fuutarou's good-hearted nature and that she will support them, despite her feelings for him. It is evident that as a StepfordSmiler, Yotsuba is using the swing as a coping machanism to hide her own uncertainties about her self-imposed role in helping her sisters at her own expense.]]
* TwinDesynch: As a child, she was the first quintuplet to try differentiating herself visually from her sisters, by wearing a ribbon like the one that has become her SignatureHeadgear. This caused their grandfather to collapse from worry, thinking that Yotsuba wanted to look different because she did not get along with her sisters. From that point on, the quintuplets took to looking identical when around him, deciding to don Itsuki's appearance.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: A downplayed example, but when the quintuplets were children, Yotsuba decided to try distinguishing herself from her sisters by wearing a hair ribbon like the ones she commonly dons as a teenager. This caused the quintuplets' grandfather to falsely think that Yotsuba wanted to look different because she wasn't getting along with her sisters, eventually stressing him out and causing him to collapse. From that point on, the quintuplets took to dressing identically when in his presence, assuming Itsuki's appearance to do so.
* VibrantOrange: As the liveliest and friendliest of the quintuplets, she's depicted in the anime and color pages of the manga with orange hair.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's pretty difficult to talk about Yotsuba without spoiling that [[spoiler:she is the quintuplet Fuutarou met in Kyoto five years before the start of the series, and how her actions in the past changed the lives of Fuutarou and her sisters.]]
* WellDoneSonGuy: She had some shades of this as a child, when she showed off her grades to her mother.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: When the quintuplets try to think of a way to reward Fuutarou for tutoring them, all of them other than Yotsuba immediately think about kissing him. Yotsuba instead thinks about giving him a medal, and is highly confused about why the rest of the quintuplets are getting flustered. [[spoiler:In hindsight, this was probably a RedHerring]]. Hilariously in the same chapter, in trying to get some cream off of his face, Yotsuba accidentally ends up kissing his cheek in front of everyone and plays it off as a way to reward Fuutarou for tutoring them.

The youngest daughter. The most serious and straightforward of the quintuplets. She was the first sister to meet Fuutarou, though the two get off to a rough start, being the fourth to accept him as the quintuplets' official tutor. She aims to become a teacher.
----
* AfraidOfNeedles: She'll run away from vaccinations.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: The youngest of the quintuplets, and the most naïve and easily scared. Especially apparent when she hangs out with Nino.
* BadBadActing: Noted to be the poorest of the quintuplets at imitating any of the others, largely because she dislikes deceiving others due to her honest nature. Though it's worth noting she does manage a decent impression of Fuutarou in Chapter 49.
* BadLiar: She's slightly better than Yotsuba. Emphasis on ''slightly.''
* BelatedLoveEpiphany: [[spoiler:Starts to have feelings of jealousy towards Fuutarou and Yotsuba after the former chooses the latter, leading her to start wondering if she's fallen for him as well, despite all of their fighting and her earnest desire to support Yotsuba.]]
* BeYourself: As her way to cope with her mother's death and trying to fill in for her, she often tries (too hard) to act more mature than she actually is. [[spoiler:When she disguises herself as "Rena", Yotsuba advises her to act more like her true self]].
* BigEater: The girl ''loves'' to eat. In the first chapter alone, she orders a seven-course meal [[note]]''udon'' noodles, double shrimp tempura, sweet potato, grilled squid, ''kashiwa-ten'', and pudding for dessert[[/note]] costing over 1000 yen ($9) overall for a ''school lunch''. She's usually seen munching on something at least once per chapter, and it frequently gets played up for ButtMonkey gags in omake chapters (and occasionally the regular ones). [[spoiler:She apparently inherited this trait from her biological father, Mudou.]]
* BirdsOfAFeather:
** She's often seen together with Nino early on, as they were both tsunderes and initially the two are the most hostile toward Fuutarou. It's less the case since their falling-out in the Seven Goodbyes arc, though, with Itsuki's "tsun" side becoming much less prominent.
** When they're not being VitriolicBestBuds with each other, her relationship with Fuutarou is more or less a platonic example of this, given that both force themselves to act more mature and serious than they actually are, and think a lot about their futures.
* BitchSlap: [[spoiler:Delivers one to Nino in chapter 39 after the latter goes too far in her antagonism towards Fuutarou and to an extent, Miku. Nino ends up slapping her back in retaliation immediately after and their fight ultimately results in both of them temporarily leaving the household]].
* BlindWithoutEm: Not as bad as Nino, but Itsuki is noted to be near-sighted and could not tell the difference between a man and a girl from a distance.
* CallingTheOldManOut: She deals one to her biological father, Mudou, in Chapter 111 over his abandonment of Rena.
* CharacterNameAlias: [[spoiler:She used her deceased mother's name, Rena, as an alias when she disguised herself as a grown-up version of the girl in Fuutarou's old photo.]] She also moonlights as a food critic under the name May.
* TheComicallySerious: Less so than Miku, but a lot of straight-laced Itsuki's more comical moments come from her playing the straight man to the antics of other characters.
* CoolBigSis: Acts as one towards Raiha, who also adores her in turn.
* CuteButPsycho: Downplayed. "Psycho" isn't quite the word, but Itsuki's cute appearance does not hint at her true unruly, unpredictable behavior in the slightest.
* CutenessProximity: Towards Fuutarou's little sister, Raiha.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Umeboshi.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Itsuki's poor first encounter with Fuutarou causes her to pridefully refuse his assistance after he becomes her tutor, determined to prove she can get good grades without his help. Over time, and after repeatedly being faced with her own limitations alone, Itsuki moves past their rough start and accepts him.
* FighterMageThief: In an art spread that depicts the girls as traditional RPG classes, Itsuki is the Fighter to Ichika's Thief and Miku's Mage.
* FieryRedhead: Not as much as Nino, but she does have her moments, especially when Fuutarou triggers her temper.
* FormalCharactersUseKeigo: She always speaks in polite forms, adding to her strait-laced demeanor. This seems to be an aspect of trying to act more like their mother after her death, as she speaks more casually while [[spoiler:disguised as Rena, which according to Yotsuba is much more like the "old" Itsuki]].
* GreenEyedEpiphany: She never considers that she might have romantic feelings of her own until [[spoiler:Fuutarou openly chooses Yotsuba as the girl he loves, prompting enough jealousy that Itsuki is forced to accept that she loved him too, even if a romantic relationship is no longer possible]].
* HeroWorshipper: Chapter 57 reveals that she's one for her own mother. She looks up so strongly to her mother, she's willing to do anything to be like her as seen by her attempts to be the mother figure for her sisters despite being the youngest as well being wanting to be a teacher just because her mother was one.
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: [[spoiler:When she first dresses up as Rena, she tells Fuutarou to forget about her (Rena) and move on, and ends up breaking Fuutarou's heart somewhat. When she dresses up a second time in Chapter 79, Fuutarou, annoyed by Rena's reappearance, first bluntly asks her to tell him who she is, then tells her to leave him alone so he can enjoy the Kyoto trip.]]
* IdiotHair: Has one of these. [[ExpressiveHair It acts up depending on her emotions; such as drooping when she is dismayed, and standing up when she is nervous.]]
* ImageSong:
** [[https://files.catbox.moe/12mndu.mp3 Obediently Open heart ~ Count to five ~]], for Season One.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR7hJx7h0WQ Lesson Five]], for Season Two.
* JerkassToOne: Not as bad as [[AlphaBitch Nino,]] but she is still pretty hostile towards Uesugi compared to her other sisters. [[JerkassHasAPoint That said, unlike Nino, Uesugi did bring this one on himself.]] As Itsuki DID genuinely reach out to him for help with her homework at the start of the series, only for him to coldly turn her away. And Uesugi would never have even reconsidered his earlier decision or attitude until he found out the hard way [[LaserGuidedKarma that Itsuki was one of the five girls he was later hired to tutor.]]
* TheNotLoveInterest: For a large part of the story, she's the only quint who doesn't show any romantic feelings for Fuutarou, developing more of a VitriolicBestBuds dynamic with him. [[spoiler:At least until he finally chooses Yotsuba, when she starts wondering if she might have fallen for him after all]].
* ObliviousToLove:
** Probably as or more dense compared to Fuutarou, taking her until the Scrambled Eggs arc to know that Miku is in love with Fuutarou, from Miku herself. She also did not realize that Ichika and Nino were in love with him either, until Fuutarou told her this himself. [[spoiler:This is best shown in Chapter 91 when she is still somehow unaware of Ichika's feelings towards Fuutarou, despite the drama during the Kyoto trip.]]
** [[spoiler:Averted in regards to Yotsuba, who never admits to anyone else that she's in love with Fuutarou, but Itsuki seems to be the only one who isn't fooled, as she repeatedly attempts to persuade Yotsuba that she's just as worthy of fighting for him as any of the others.]]
* OneNoteCook: Volume 3's omake reveals that she only knows how to cook rice.
* OpenSecret: One of the character bios reveals that she doesn't know how to ride a bike. She thinks she's hidden this from her sisters, but they all know.
* PaperThinDisguise: Her "disguise" as a food critic consists of nothing more than wearing a pair of sunglasses and a surgical mask, and removing her star-shaped hairclips. Fuutarou and Nino see through it immediately due to her [[IdiotHair ahoge]]. [[spoiler:As of Chapter 103, even the manager of "Revival" saw right through it.]]
* PlatonicLifePartners: Fitting for the quint that isn't romantically attracted to him [[spoiler:until her BelatedLoveEpiphany]], Itsuki shares the strongest platonic relationship with Fuutarou, seeing as both of them bicker constantly while also having a genuinely tight friendship given what they both undertake together.
* PrettyFreeloaders: After her fight with Nino, she ended up freeloading in Fuutarou's house for a while during the Seven Goodbyes arc.
* {{Pride}}: Fuutarou rejects her initial offer to tutor her (and insults her) before learning that he had been offered a high-paying job of tutoring her and her sisters. By the time he realizes his mistake, she has resolved to not accept his help and instead tries to study on her own for several chapters (despite poor results). They eventually make up and she accepts his help from then on.
* SecretKeeper: The only one who knows just how bad Fuutarou's financial situation is. At his request, she promises not to tell her sisters. [[spoiler:She also is the only one who knows that Yotsuba is the photo girl, and has loved Fuutarou the whole time]].
* StrongFamilyResemblance: According to Mudou, she greatly resembles her mother, Rena, as a high school student, which is what tips him off to the fact that she is also his daughter.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Itsuki's serious, mature persona is implied to be largely [[BeneathTheMask an act]], imitating her late mother to cope with her death. Flashes of her "real" personality show that she's somewhat less mature than she acts, being prone to displaying overly-emotional reactions to shock, crying or sulking when yelled at, and child-like enthusiasm when happy or excited about something.
* TeamMom: She took it upon herself to serve as her sisters' mother figure after their actual mother died by trying to be the most level-headed and responsible of them as much as possible despite being the youngest of the quintuplets, though Ichika (the actual oldest sister and the one who takes their feelings into account the most) and Nino (the second born and the most home-oriented of the five) admittedly fit the bill better.
* ThisIsMyNameOnForeign: While posing as a food critic, she uses the alias "May" (as in the month of). This is a literal English translation of her Japanese name (五月).
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Meat (food) and curry (drink).
* {{Tsundere}}: She's a Sweet type unlike Nino; being for the most part nice and friendly unless you push her buttons. She mostly drops the act once she gets more comfortable with Fuutarou, and even early on, she's shown to be sympathetic to his economical situation despite their first meeting. However, she's also the only sister who has shown [[TheNotLoveInterest few to no hints of romantic feelings for him]].
* WeightWoe: Implied in one of the omakes to be a fair bit heavier than the rest of her sisters (for obvious reasons, see BigEater above), something she is not happy about.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Ghosts and the supernatural in general terrify her to no end. She's only able to power through a horror movie if Ichika is acting in it.
* YouAreNotMyFather: While the rest of her sisters are present, she's the one who directly says to [[spoiler:Mudou]] that [[spoiler:Maruo]] has been their real father.

Fuutarou's little sister. A kind and cheerful young girl adored by the rest of the cast.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her eyes are light green in the first anime season. The second season gives her amber eyes, similar to her brother.
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: She's well aware of her family's financial state, and Fuutarou comments that she often holds back on asking for things she wants because of it. Fuutarou actually spends his first tutoring paycheck on taking her to an arcade simply so she can act like a child for once.
* AnimeHair: She has a ''very'' large half-ponytail that somehow defies gravity at all times, and which is only held in place by a tiny bow.
* BigBrotherWorship: Loves and respects her brother more than anything, though she doesn't deny that he can be rigid and a real jerk at times.
* CheerfulChild: A sweet and adorable girl who's always irradiating happiness. No wonder everyone loves her.
* CutenessProximity: Literally ''everyone'' is overcome with affection and dotes on how cute she is, particularly Yotsuba who wishes to have her as a real sister.
* TheCutie: Nearly every character that meets Raiha (Itsuki and Yotsuba, especially) quickly grows fond of her for her cheerful and lovable disposition. When Fuutarou describes his ideal girl, he bases her off of Raiha's personality.
* DeliberatelyCuteChild: A downplayed example, since she's never actually malicious or even mischievous, but she does know how to use her expressions to convince people to follow her lead (like Fuutarou, Yotsuba and Itsuki).
* ImprobableHairstyle: Several strands that manage to stick straight up before curling back down while the rest of her hair lays flat. WordOfGod claims her unusual hairstyle was to keep fans from getting too attached to her (this failed miserably, as Raiha is just about the most popular non-quint character in the series, possibly even more than Fuutarou).
* NiceGirl: She's generally kind and pleasant to just about everyone.
* ParentalFavoritism: Fuutarou's grandparents always make sure to give Raiha New Years money... but seem to neglect to give Fuutarou himself any.
* PuppyDogEyes: Doesn't hesitate one bit to use this to get Fuutarou or Itsuki to do what she wants, usually with a side of (what may or may not be) CrocodileTears.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: During the flash-forwards to Fuutarou's wedding, Raiha (now a high-schooler herself) gets several comments on what a beauty she's become.
* ShipperOnDeck: Treats Itsuki like a big sister, and hints several times that she definitely wouldn't mind having her as her actual sister-in-law. That being said, she does support Fuutarou being with any of the quintuplets.
* SickEpisode: Comes down with a terrible fever just before Fuutarou's school trip, which causes him to nearly miss the trip while he cares for her in the absence of their father. [[spoiler:Fuutarou ends up catching it from her, setting up the events of the third day of the school trip.]]
* SupremeChef: While not on Nino's level, she is a capable cook in her own right and does most of the cooking in the Uesugi household. It should be noted that she is this by necessity, as her father is [[WhenYouComingHomeDad often at work]] and her brother is terrible at cooking.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Hamburger (food) and orange juice (drink).

Fuutarou and Raiha's father. He is often absent at home due to the fact that he needs to work long hours to support his children.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: Like his daughter, his eyes are green in the first anime season, but they're changed to golden in the second season.
* BerserkButton: ParentalNeglect seems to be this for him, as he rails on the quintuplets' father for the way he treats them. [[spoiler:Chapter 32 shows that this remains into Fuutarou's wedding, as Maruo initially neglects to show up. When Mudou, the Quintuplets' biological father, appears he essentially mocks his attempts at being a father.]]
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: In the manga and second season of the anime, he's got blond hair and golden eyes.
* {{Foil}}: His circumstances are similar to the quintuplets' father, Maruo. Both are widowed fathers whose work leaves them little time to spend time with their children, but while Isanari is on good terms with his children despite being poor, Maruo almost completely neglects his children, though does provide them a lavish life with his affluence. Additionally, while he is biologically related to his children, Maruo is a stepfather who married the quintuplets' mother and assumed guardianship of them following her death.
* GoodParents: While often absent, he is generally depicted as a good father who cares about his children's well-being.
* HappilyMarried: The way he speaks about his late wife strongly implies their marriage was a happy one until she died.
* JockDadNerdSon: He (probably) regularly exercises, while his son is a nerd.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: Unlike Fuutarou, who is excessively serious and straight-laced, focusing mostly on his studies, Isanari is rather easy-going, and his physique suggests that he exercises regularly. Though according to him this wasn't always the case, as Fuutarou sported a delinquent look back in elementary school.
* MumLooksLikeASister: Male example; he sometimes looks more like Fuutarou's and Raiha's big brother.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: He appears to somehow be acquainted with Maruo Nakano, the quintuplets' stepfather though exactly how hasn't yet been revealed. [[spoiler:Chapter 103 would reveal that they were former classmates in Rena's class.]]
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Not as evident at first glance, but Fuutarou definitely inherited his face and eyes from him. Flashbacks of him as a student show that he looked like a teenage version of Fuutarou with his delinquent look.
* TragicKeepsake: The sunglasses, [[AllInTheManual as revealed in Itsuki's Character book]], he wears on his head used to belong to his deceased wife.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: Downplayed on the "wacky" part, since he's a very responsible parent, but also very laidback and easygoing, compared to his serious and straight-faced son. In fact, he seems rather proud of the fact that Fuutarou used to sport a delinquent look (much like himself), and advises him to not to be as obsessed with his studies.
* WhenYouComingHomeDad: He is frequently absent from home, having to work long hours to support his children as a single parent.

Fuutarou's and Raiha's biological, late mother.
----
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: The few lines Fuutarou says about her imply that she was very loving to him and Raiha.
* HappilyMarried: Until her death, at least, her marriage to Isanari is all but stated to have been a happy one.
* PosthumousCharacter: Died six years before the start of the series.
* SupremeChef: Her bread was apparently delicious enough to be sold at local shops, according to Fuutarou.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: [[spoiler:A tragic example. As she died due to an accident right before she could start running her restaurant, her family was left with the debt from the loans used as starting capital. Likely explaining their poverty status.]]

The Nakano quintuplets' late biological mother.
----
* BrokenPedestal: [[spoiler:She was inspired by her teacher, Mudou, to become a teacher herself, and even fell in love with and married him. Then he abandoned her when she was pregnant. One of the last pieces of advice she left for her daughters was to be careful when choosing men, implying that she regrets having married him]].
* CorporalPunishment: Bad apple students knew better than to take their teacher, Mrs. Nakano, lightly, and often feared getting disciplinary smacks from her.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Her daughters always speak fondly of her, so it can be inferred that she loved them very much.
* FieryRedhead: According to Shimoda, she could be pretty fierce when she wanted to, but also switch into TheStoic when necessary.
* HotTeacher: Despite her serious nature and stern teaching, she was admired by the entire school for her good looks, even having a fan club amongst the students.
* NumericalThemeNaming: Her name contains the kanji for zero, fitting in with the numerically based names of her daughters.
* PosthumousCharacter: Died five years before the start of the series.
* SternTeacher: Her former students remember her for her strict, humorless disposition, but also for her passion for bettering her students.
* TheStoic: Flipped between this and being a FieryRedhead depending on the situation, according to Shimoda.
* StrugglingSingleMother: After her first husband walked out on her while she was pregnant, she had to raise her daughters alone, which eventually took a toll on her health and led to her untimely death.
* ThickerThanWater: It was Rena's influence that encouraged the girls, even after her passing, to always stick together no matter what. [[spoiler:This seems to have been passed onto her students, according to Isanari, given how he is deeply concerned over his children especially after his wife's passing. Her other student Maruo, despite his ParentalNeglect, provides the opportunity for the quintuplets to stick together by providing them a better life.]]

The Nakano quintuplets' stepfather, who married their mother and was left with custody of them after her death. He kickstarts the plot by hiring Fuutarou to tutor the quintuplets.
----
* ChekhovsGunman: He is revealed to be the doctor who did a checkup on Fuutarou at the hospital.
* TheChessmaster: He seems to have a degree of care towards his stepdaughters, and orchestrates things behind the scenes for their benefit without revealing his involvement. To wit, in the Scrambled Eggs arc, he faked contest winning tickets to a RyokanInn as an excuse to take the quintuplets on vacation to see their ailing grandfather, who is the innkeeper. When Fuutarou and the quintuplets move up to their third year in high school, he makes sure that [[AlwaysInClassOne they are all placed in the same class together]].
* {{Foil}}: His circumstances are similar to Fuutarou's father, Isanari. Both are widowed fathers whose work leaves them little time to spend time with their children, but while Isanari is on good terms with his children despite being poor, Maruo almost completely neglects his children, though does provide them a lavish life with his affluence. Additionally, while he is a stepfather who married the quintuplets' mother and assumed guardianship of them following her death, Isanari is biologically related to his children.
* ForYourOwnGood: He frames his actions regarding the quintuplets in this manner, but they see him as overly domineering and controlling.
* HeWhoMustNotBeSeen: Until Chapter 53, he was always shown speaking to Fuutarou and his daughters while shadowed out.
* UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics: He addresses his own adoptive daughters with "-kun", displaying an impersonal, business-like relationship with them. Nino has objected to it more than once.
* {{Manchild}}: Downplayed, after Fuutarou [[CallingTheOldManOut calls him out on being neglectful to his daughters]], he replies by ''[[DisproportionateRetribution banning]]'' him from entering the building. And when Itsuki questions him about this, he replies "I don't like him", which she lampshades is very immature of him.
* KnightTemplarParent: Shows shades of this when he rehires Fuutarou to tutor the quintuplets, as he warns the latter not to have untoward relations with them. This visibly unnerves Fuutarou, as by that point, he is aware that Ichika and Nino are in love with him.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: He appears to be somehow acquainted with Isanari Uesugi, Fuutarou's father. though their exact relationship has not yet been revealed. [[spoiler:Chapter 103 would reveal that they were former classmates in Rena's class.]] Presumably, this may have something to do with why he hired Fuutarou to tutor his daughters. He also is acquainted with Takeda's father, who is trying to leverage this relationship to [[{{Nepotism}} get Takeda a job]] at the hospital Maruo works.
* ParentalNeglect:
** Fuutarou accuses him of this, as he was completely unaware of the argument Nino and Itsuki had that kicked off the Seven Goodbyes arc until Fuutarou told him about it, and all he cared to ask was whether they were still arguing. Fuutarou is visibly angered by the fact that he did not bother to find out why they even argued in the first place and did not do anything to try and resolve the issue, leaving Fuutarou with all the work of doing so.
** He is conspicuously absent from Fuutarou's wedding, ostensibly deciding not to show up at all, at least until Isanari rails on him for it.
* ParentsAsPeople: Downplayed. He means well with his stepdaughters and does what (he thinks) is best for them, but there's no denying he's too distant and rarely (if ever) displays affection towards them. Regardless, he does show that he loves them on the few moments he has [[spoiler:mainly when Mudou shows back up and Miku is disguised as Itsuki, Maruo sees through the disguise and identifies her as Miku while Mudou fell for the trick]].
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler:[[TranquilFury Calmly]] rakes Mudou through the coals for his abandonment of Rena when she was pregnant with quintuplets.]]
* TheStoic: He shows very little emotion throughout the story, and always talks in a calm manner.
* {{Tsundere}}: Isanari frames him as one who disguises his affection for his daughters behind a demeanor of aloofness and distance.
* TeacherStudentRomance: [[spoiler:ZigZagged. While he, like most of his classmates, showed attraction to Rena (to the point where he was president of her fanclub), there doesn't seem to be any sign of a romantic relationship until long after he has graduated.]]
* WhenYouComingHomeDad: Like Isanari, he works long hours at his job and is often absent from home. Unlike Isanari, he is not particularly close to his stepchildren, who resent him for his attempts to impose order in their lives.

The Nakano quintuplets' maternal grandfather, he is introduced in the Scrambled Eggs arc as the innkeeper of the [[RyokanInn ryokan]] that the Uesugi and Nakano families visit for spring vacation.
----
* ActOfTrueLove: According to him, being able to tell the quintuplets apart is this, as one would have to be genuinely close to them in order to be willing to spend the time and effort to distinguish them through their mannerisms, interests, and habits. The quintuplets also share this sentiment, which is why [[spoiler:Miku is so delighted when Fuutarou manages to identify her as the fake Itsuki]].
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: When Fuutarou asks him how to identify the quintuplets even when they look the same, he replies by asking him what he hopes to achieve from that. The question leaves Fuutarou visibly puzzled and unable to give an answer.
* BeYourself: Realizing that he is responsible for the quintuplets suppressing their individuality whenever he is around, he tells Fuutarou to pass a message to them, telling them to do this. The next time they visit him, they do so with their own individual styles, which seems to delight him.
* EyesOutOfSight: His hair tends to completely obscure his eyes.
* NoNameGiven: He's only referred as "Grandfather", his real name is never revealed.
* OldMaster: He can effortlessly tell the quintuplets apart, even though they all dress up as Itsuki around him, and Fuutarou treats him as this when seeking to learn how to do so as well.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: He outlived his daughter Rena for a few years.
* PapaWolf: Don't lay hands on any of his granddaughters if you know what's good for you, as Fuutarou found out the hard way when he grabbed Miku while demanding an explanation as to why she wanted to sever ties with him.
* RyokanInn: He lives and works in one.
* TakeCareOfTheKids: After Fuutarou earns his trust, the old man entrusts the quintuplets to the former's care, as he is ailing and doesn't have much time left to live.

* BetaCouple: Ends up meeting a girl during the school camping trip, getting paired up for the test of courage and dancing together at the bonfire dance. They later show up as guests at Fuutarou's wedding, HappilyMarried and with her several months pregnant.
* TheBusCameBack: Drops out of focus after the school camping trip, but returns during the third year as part of same class as the main cast. He even becomes friends with Fuutarou and Takeda, grouping together for the Kyoto trip.
* FaceOfAThug: His sour expression and slicked-back hair, combined with his rather pushy personality, make him seem like one, but he doesn't seem to be a bad guy otherwise.
* GenreSavvy: He's one of the few people to remember that "Ichika" has four identical sisters when he notices that [[OutOfCharacterAlert she's acting differently than usual]].
* LastNameBasis: His given name hasn't been revealed yet.
* LoveConfession: Gives one to Ichika (or rather, Miku disguised as Ichika).
* SmashingWatermelons: In Chapter 91, he's buried up to his neck next to a watermeleon, and Fuutarou winds up accidentally hitting him.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: His asking Ichika to dance with him at the bonfire starts a series of events that leads to Ichika falling for Fuutarou, setting up much of the romantic conflict for the series.

A popular student in Fuutarou and the quintuplets' grade. He considers himself Fuutarou's academic rival.
----
* AdaptationalJerkass: He's less courteous to the quintuplets in the anime by virtue of outright calling them [[TheLoad hindrances to Fuutarou's studies]] to their faces in his first meeting with them, though his brief interactions with Miku are much more polite than that later on. In the manga, the only time he's somewhat "rude" to the sisters was when Nino interrupted his conversation with Fuutarou and went [[LargeHam ham]] on them in turn for doing so, but no more than that.
* AlwaysSecondBest: To Fuutarou, until the first set of the third-year exams, due to Fuutarou's grades slipping while he was tutoring the Nakano sisters.
* BishieSparkle: He sparkles almost all the time when he's talking.
* DemotedToExtra: Takeda's [[HiddenDepths character and personal motivations]] are explored in significantly less detail in the anime adaptation as a result of the anime cutting out the subplot involving him and Maruo, and reducing the importance of the deal he and Fuutarou made about getting the top scores in the National Mock Exams from the manga in turn.
* FriendlyRivalry: After the national mock exams, he and Fuutarou have this kind of relationship, with Fuutarou acknowledging and accepting Takeda's challenge after Takeda tells him about his dream, and Takeda praising Fuutarou's resolve and congratulating him on getting 3rd place.
* GracefulLoser: He accepts his defeat in the national mock exams, and congratulates Fuutarou on getting 3rd place.
* HiddenDepths: He refuses to get an easy job as a doctor through connections, instead aspiring to become an ''astronaut'' in the future.
* MeaningfulName: Named after the famous Japanese general Takeda Shingen, who had a rivalry with Fuutarou's own namesake, Uesugi Kenshin. One chapter that focus on their rivalry is even called "New Kawanakajima."[[note]]Referencing the battles of Kawanakajima which Shingen Takeda and Kenshin Uesugi fought in the Sengoku era.[[/note]]
* {{Nepotism}}: His father, the school director, is acquainted with Maruo Nakano, and is trying to get in the latter's good graces in order to get him a job at the hospital in which Maruo works. To that end, his father tries to get him to cheat on the national mock exams and obtain favorable results by giving him the answer key. However, he [[WhatYouAreInTheDark refuses to cheat]] and manages to score eighth place nationally. Maruo is impressed enough by this to offer him the job anyway, but as he has ambitions of becoming an astronaut instead, he politely turns it down.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Tends to initiate conversations with Fuutarou while standing next to him in the urinals, to Fuutarou's immense discomfort.
* UnknownRival: Practically screams with delight upon revealing to Fuutarou that he's finally beaten him on an exam. Fuutarou… has no idea who he is. This changes in Chapter 76 when Fuutarou acknowledges Takeda as a rival.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: Despite his father obtaining the answer key to the national mock exams, he refuses to use it to cheat and finally score above Uesugi, stating that getting good grades that way is meaningless.
* WorthyOpponent: He considers Fuutarou to be this, praising his resolve and congratulating him on getting 3rd place in the national mock exams.

Rena's teacher and ex-husband, and the Nakano quintuplets' biological father.
----

* TheAtoner: Subverted. He initially seems to be this when he apologizes to Itsuki and tries to talk her out of a career path he thinks will make her miserable. But then it becomes clear that he's only doing this as a half-hearted way to ease his own guilt, as he makes no effort to reach out to the other quintuplets. When he's rejected by Itsuki, he simply leaves in a huff showing that he never truly changed.
* BaldOfEvil: He's bald and the ArcVillain of Itsuki's focus chapters in The Last Festival arc.
* BeardOfEvil: He has a large bushy beard which, combined with his baldness, led to Fuutarou snarking that his face seems upside down.
* BigEater: He's constantly snacking, a trait that he apparently passed down to one of his daughters, Itsuki.
* BrokenPedestal: According to Maruo, he was the inspiration for Rena to become a teacher, but became this after he abandoned her upon discovering that she was pregnant with the quintuplets.
* DisappearedDad: He is this to the quintuplets, having left Rena to raise them by herself after discovering that she was pregnant with five kids. Deconstructed as he does feel guilty about it and tries to help Itsuki to atone. But having been absent from their lives, he doesn't know his daughters at all and is in no position to lecture Itsuki (or Maruo) about anything.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Essentially the reason why he wants to prevent Itsuki from becoming a teacher like her mother is to ease his own conscience about what happened to Rena than any love and concern for her or her sisters. After all, why would he turn down a chance to see the rest of his daughters?
* PoseOfSupplication: After Itsuki accuses him of abandoning Rena while she was pregnant, he responds with this, and strikes his head hard enough on the ground to cause a nasty wound.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Ran away when he found out that his wife was pregnant with quintuplets.
* StrawHypocrite: He lambasts Maruo as a neglectful father, but considering the fact that he abandoned Rena before the quintuplets were born, he doesn't hold the higher moral ground in this case. And while it's true that Maruo is neglectful, it can't be denied that he provides the quintuplets shelter and the opportunity to stick together after their mother died as a way of respecting his former teacher, something that Mudou never did to Rena back when she was his student. It certainly didn't help Mudou's case when he fell for Miku's half-assed Ituski disguise, which Maruo saw through right away.
* SweetTooth: He is often seen consuming some form of sweet treat.
* TeacherStudentRomance: He was once Rena's homeroom teacher, and later married her.
* YouRemindMeOfX: Tells Itsuki that she's the near-spitting image of her mother. To him, however, that's not a positive thing.

* AdorablyPrecociousChild: The "adorably" part might be debatable, but she's precocious enough [[spoiler:to understand that her mother eloped with another man]].
* GirlishPigtails: Has her hair in twin braids.
* PerpetualFrowner: During the entire chapter she sports this expression. [[spoiler:It's implied this is due to being sad because of her mom's infidelity and leaving them]].
* PlayingHouse: Forces Fuutarou and the quintuplets to play this way. Funnily enough, rather than making Miku or Ichika the wife, she has them play "the secretaries".
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: [[spoiler:Her "I don't need a mommy" seems to hint she's pretty sad that her mother cheated on her dad and left with another man]].

* BenevolentBoss: Hired Miku despite [[LethalChef her lack of baking skills]], and did her best to teach her until she was able to make bread good enough to be sold. She even allowed her to use the bakery's facilities so she could make some bread for Fuutarou during the Kyoto trip, despite having no benefit for her business in doing so.
* FriendlyRivalry: Despite being competitors, she seems to get along with Revival's manager. [[spoiler:She even visits him at the hospital when he has an accident and has to temporarily close his shop, and they're also seen attending the school festival together]].
* NoNameGiven: Like her rival, she's not named in the story.

* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Totally ''not'' Diego Maradona, right?
* NoNameGiven: Like other characters here, we don't get to hear his name.
