!Liberators: [=Dx2=]
[[folder:The Player]]
!Name unknown / Code name: Determinate
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/smtdx2protagonists.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Their lives are definitely more exciting now.]]

Your character who becomes caught up in a conflict with the Liberators and the Acolytes shortly after downloading a game app. Can be either male or female.

* ExperienceBooster: One of their Liberator skills is the passive ability to increase Experience gained after battle. This makes them the ideal character to run Leveling Quests.
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:In the Alternate Chapter 7, which even requires you to replay part of Chapter 6 to choose the possibility of joining the Acolytes to save your own skin.]]
* HelloInsertNameHere: They lack an official name.
* HeroicMime: In true [=SMT=] tradition, their personality depends foremost on your actions and decisions.
* JackOfAllTrades: Their stat boosting skills don't focus on any specific stats, but rank up twice in every stat. Their other skills also don't favor any type of demons, but are the kinds that help anyone, like increasing MP regeneration or recovering HP.
* JumpedAtTheCall: They instantly join the Liberators.
* NothingExcitingEverHappensHere: Thinks about this shortly before getting dragged into a quite a bit of a mess.
* PurelyAestheticGender: You can choose to play as a male or female. Aside from some slight dialogue changes, there is no difference playing as either. [[spoiler:The Interlude shows that the MC that chose the Alternate events of Chapter 7 is the opposite gender of the player's.]]
* SuddenlyVoiced:
** Late in the normal Chapter 7, s/he gets two lines independent of player control. The beginning of battle 15 has them say "Leave it to me!" when tasked with destroying Vanitas, and the end cutscene of battle 16 has them say "Devil Download!" right before killing it once and for all.
** At the end of the alternate Chapter 7, you mutter [[spoiler:the word "Aion" after humanity is obliterated]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Templar Dragon]]
!Rika Ryuzouji / Code name: Templar Dragon
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/templar_dragon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:She thinks you'd make a good target.]]

A very hard to read ally for the protagonist with whom she works on a certain case.
----

* BrutalHonesty: She basically eschews the idea of having any reservations while talking.
* ChargedAttack: Her skills can increase the power of Charge and Concentrate skills, which greatly increase the damage of the next attack used (physical and magical, respectively).
* DamselInDistress: [[spoiler: Ends up as one alongside Ririn in Chapter 4, though this doesn't exactly last long; Gakuto's intervention entertains their would-be torturer so much that he puts off doing so.]]
* DisappearedDad: [[spoiler:Her father was also part of the Liberators, and lost his life while fighting the Acolytes]].
* DualBoss: [[spoiler:Fights you alongside Jeng Yun in the alternate Chapter 7.]]
* GunNut: Shows unnerving levels of enthusiasm for firearms. [[spoiler:When the Acolytes attack Akihabara in force, she defends the Church of False Gods, all the while pestering Vagit for guns he doesn't have.]]
* TheGunslinger: Natch. She IS a GunNut after all.
* ItemCaddy: One of her skills allow her to use items for only half a turn.
* LightningBruiser: Her boost to charge skills and the ability to boost all her demon's stats if one of them misses an attack, along with skills that help out healer demons, it's no wonder most players choose her as their go to [=Dx2=].
* SeriousBusiness: Often takes ''almost anything'' way too seriously. In her interlude, [[spoiler:she, the protagonist and Meat Balloon are lured into a DeathTrap in the guise of an Airsoft tournament. She makes it a point to abide by the rules of the game as she takes down the attackers, to her companions' and even the Acolyte organizer's nonplussed stares.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Megakin]]
!Taro Fuse / Code name: Megakin
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/megakin.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:This is the leader. No, seriously.]]

TheLeader of the Tokyo division of the Liberators. Taro is also a popular video maker at [[BlandNameProduct MegaTube]] ([[CaptainObvious yes]], a WebSite/YouTube {{Expy}}), using the handle Megakin.
----

* BunnyEarsLawyer: The guy's an enthusiastic internet celebrity, yet he's effective as the leader of Liberators.
* CoolShades: Wears ''enormous'' mechanical goggles.
* AnIcePerson: Owns a Level 15 Jack Frost.
* TheLeader: For the Tokyo division of Liberators.
* MetaPowerup: A majority of his Liberator skills don't help much in battle, but they do help in getting demons to join you.
* UnclePennybags: His interlude reveals he makes quite a pretty chunk of cash, and he certainly isn't shy about using it to hold a fairly expensive event for a large group of kids. He also financially supported Kazufumi for a while. That said, his resources have limits and he's shown to slightly blanch at the final tab, though he still pays in full.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Chalk Eater]]
!Shiang Sun / Code name: Chalk Eater
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chalk_eater.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Just don't ask him about horror movies...]]

A college student from Shanghai who is studying super computers. He joins your party in Chapter 2.
----

* AsianAndNerdy: He is a Chinese student specializing in super computers.
* AttackItsWeakPoint: His specialty as a Liberator. His skills confer various boons when a demon hits the enemy's weakness, such as status buffs or giving an extra turn.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: [[spoiler: He's harboring a lot of repressed anger, particularly from parental neglect as a child. In his character story, he briefly becomes victim of demonic possession due to this.]]
* EverybodyHasStandards: While he loves horror movies, when he learns a [[SnuffFilm serial killer is uploading videos of their murders]], he's utterly disgusted, insisting that people shouldn't act out horror films in real life.
* MakingASplash: Likes surfing, also has Forneus as his primary demon.
* NiceGuy: Despite his er, [[NightmareFetishist grim interests,]] he's quite laid-back and approachable.
* NightmareFetishist: While he likes surfing too, he is especially indulgent when it comes to horror movies.
* PlayfulHacker: Hacking is one of his hobbies, and a small part of his studies too. When hacking, he occasionally mumbles to himself as if he's a horror movie monster chasing down a hiding victim...
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Eileen]]
!Ririn Ueda / Code name: Eileen
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eileen.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:No shortage of story ideas around here!]]

An aspiring author working on a light novel who comes from a poor family. She enjoys cosplay, and works at a swimsuit themed café.
----

* BigSisterInstinct: Has a younger brother and sister whom she cares deeply for, and is determined to secure a good future for.
* ChivalrousPervert: Her flirting can be a bit aggressive sometimes, but if you dare lay a finger on a pretty girl she likes you ''will'' regret it.
* DamselInDistress: [[spoiler: Ends up one alongside Rika in Chapter 4, though only temporarily. Gakuto's timely intervention entertains her would-be torturer so much that he just puts off doing so.]]
* InterspeciesRomance: In her character story, [[spoiler: she ultimately concludes on writing a Girls Love story between a human and a demon. Notably, she also seeks out Leanan Sidhe, as those who become her lovers are granted incredible creative inspiration in exchange for a shortened lifespan, not knowing the latter half of the deal at first. While Leanan Sidhe reciprocated her feelings, Eileen ultimately declined, as she still has much more life to live.]]
* LipstickLesbian: She makes her preference for girls ''very'' clear, and has many traditionally "girly" interests.
* LoopholeAbuse: Some of her skills trigger if your demons manage to get the maximum number of hits from their random target attacks. Some demons, however, have attacks that deal a fixed number of hits, meaning that they always deal the maximum number of hits; Eileen's ability work for these demons just fine.
* MoneyFetish: Quite fixated on earning cash, and several of her combat abilities are dedicated to increasing your macca and item gain.
* MoneyMultiplier: She has the ability to increase Macca gain after battle.
* RandomDropBooster: One of her skills can add one more item drop after battle. This makes her the ideal character for farming Aethers in Strange Signals.
* RandomizedDamageAttack: The other half of her skillset specializes in boosting the effects of random target attacks. This includes giving buffs when using them or increasing the number of hits or random attacks.
* YuriFan: She claims that her interest in other women falls more along these lines if the player character straight-up asks if she bats for the other team during the Chapter 1 Interlude.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kangaroo Boxer]]
!Jeng Yun Tsai / Code name: Kangaroo Boxer
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kangaroo_boxer.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:An artist in more ways than one.]]

A member of Liberators who happens to be of Chinese-Taiwanese descent. Aside from being a martial artist, he is also talented in drawing.
----
* ActionInitiative: His Position Hack skill gives his party a chance to go first even if they're slower than the enemy.
* AllAsiansKnowMartialArts: To the point that he is actually even seen shadow boxing in the opening.
* AmbiguouslyGay: In his character story, when Eileen asks if he's in a relationship with his long-time friend, Vagit, after a somewhat intimate sounding comment, he responds "Together? Hmm... I wouldn't say no if it was on the table!"
* CriticalHitClass: Specializes in going first and scoring critical hits. His skills include increasing critical rate when going first, or giving a speed buff when scoring a critical.
* DualBoss: [[spoiler:Fights you alongside Rika in the alternate Chapter 7.]]
* FashionableAsymmetry: Has a tattoo of a spider outline on his left arm.
* ForeignFanservice: Well, nobody is complaining about having a tanned, buff martial artist in the cast...
* HeroicBuild: Justified, as he is a martial artist.
* {{Hunk}}: Just look at him!
* MusclesAreMeaningful: A young martial artist having an above-average physique is... nothing to be surprised about. So meaningful, in fact [[spoiler: that in his character story, he is capable of slaying a demon with his bare hands!]]
* {{Narcissist}}: He is very proud of his well-built physique...
* NeverSmileAtACrocodile: Has a Level 10 Ammut when he joins your party.
* RealMenWearPink: Wears sandy pink cargo pants. Still easily one of the manlier guys in the game.
* ShamelessFanserviceGuy: Taking his shirt off is one of the things listed as his likes. [[https://imgur.com/EVhGJkw One of his talk animations]] is even him slowly unzipping his top and staring into the camera!
* SleevesAreForWimps: Even when he wears some clothing, he still leaves his muscular arms visible.
* WhenHeSmiles: {{Downplayed}}. Even though he usually has a cocky grin, he can also make a surprisingly sweet smile like [[https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DUgsKi3V4AAAndD.jpg this]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Shionyan]]
!Shiori Koden / Code name: Shionyan
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shionyan.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Just as much bark as her bite.]]

An intellectually gifted high school student, Shionyan is an [[InsistentTerminology underground]] idol whose ''prickly'' personality is making it difficult to get her career off the ground.
----

* AlphaBitch: Everyone is below her and she ''really'' makes a point of letting everyone else know it. All of her fellow Liberators except Gakuto tend to have to suppress the urge to sock her upside the head, whether figuratively or literally.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Her idol routine is cheerful and super sweet, but the second she drops the persona she starts doling out insults.
* BrutalHonesty: Except, unlike Templar Dragon, it's less that she doesn't realize that she's hurting people's feelings, it's more that she just doesn't care.
* IdolSinger: An ''underground'' idol, she just hasn't found her fanbase yet. [[InsufferableGenius Right]]...
* ImprobablyHighIQ: Her IQ is above 180, and she's not shy to tell you!
* InsufferableGenius: There's no doubt she's very smart, but she thinks of everyone else as beneath her and makes no attempt to hide it.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Ultimately, she fights for the Liberators because it's the right thing to do, and that she does care in her own way, though you'd be hard pressed to get her to admit it.
* StatusEffects: Her skills improve their potency, such as increasing Poison damage, increasing the duration of Mute, or adding extra MP when enemies are hit by any effect bar Curse.
* SuicideDare: Can tell the player to off themselves at the base as a random quip.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Meat Balloon]]
!Gakuto Inoue / Code name: Meat Balloon
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/meat_balloon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Don't underestimate him.]]

A retired SDF and PMC soldier, Gakuto's recent hobbies have caused him to fall out of shape, but don't let that fool you; he's still a soldier through and through. Also Shionyan's one and only dedicated fan.
----

* AscendedFanboy: Imagine his surprise he'd get to work alongside his beloved Shionyan!
* BewareTheSillyOnes: It's easy to forget this man has killed people before. When talking about his past, his face takes on a darker look and he speaks much more monotone. On the flipside, when talking about Shionyan, his face lights up, complete with big sparkly cartoon eyes.
* BigFun: Round, friendly, and quick to help anyone in need.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler: First shows up doing this in Chapter 4, ramming the underground fight club's entrance with a rigged car while the protagonist, Shiang, and Taro are being forced to fight demons by Hayate to entertain said fight club.]]
* TheBigGuy: He's the largest member of the team, and gameplay-wise he's all about tanking the enemy's attacks.
* CriticalStatusBuff: Some of his skills are more likely to go off the more of his party members are downed.
* PrivateMilitaryContractors: He used to be one. Jolly as he may seem, he's one of the few Liberators who has actual military experience.
* StoneWall: His skills specialize in increasing survivability, like granting defense buff or attack debuff. He also increase the potency of [[CounterAttack Counter Attacks]].

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Seiran Saikawa]]

----

* DueToTheDead: After the disastrous Aura Gate expedition, she visits the families of the five members of the Exploration Team and gives them some small help to ease the grief of their family members' passing, while also dealing with an obsessed researcher who was passed over for the same expedition.
* ForeignCultureFetish: She's Japanese by birth, but utterly captivated by Chinese culture.
* TheMedic: Her skills revolve around healing, and she can revive a demon once with 10% HP.
* OptionalPartyMember: She joins you after you complete the Aura Gate dungeon, instead of progressing through the story.
* PlayingWithFire: Her default demon is Feng Huang.
* SexyBacklessOutfit: Her pre-fight portrait shows that her UsefulNotes/{{qipao}} doesn't cover her back.
* SituationalSword: Her second set of skills provides bonuses when traversing the Aura Gate 1, such as revealing parts of the map or reducing MP consumption within.
* SixthRanger: Becomes playable after completing the Aura Gate dungeon.

!Liberators: other members

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/smtdx2arisa.jpg]]

An orphaned girl with dark interests and no filter in talking about them, Arisa manages the summoning portal for the Liberators.
----
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Even among the quirky members of the Liberators, she's considerably weirder than them.
* FalseReassurance: [[spoiler:During the Acolyte attack, she proposes entering the Summoning Portal to Kangaroo Boxer. Surprised, he says he didn't know it was safe. She replies that [[DarkAndTroubledPast her parents entered it, screaming and saying how all was lost, and never came out again.]] Irritated, he discards the suggestion.]]
* FreudianExcuse: Her obsession with the Summoning Portals stems from having her parents disappear into them.
* GothicLolita: Definitely matches this aesthetic.
* {{Meido}}: She's wearing a maid outfit any time you see her.
* NightmareFuelStationAttendant: She often says things that unnerve the rest of the cast, ''including'' NightmareFetishist Shiang Sun.
* ParentalAbandonment: Her parents disappeared into a Summoning Portal one day and haven't come out of it yet. [[spoiler:Turns out this is because they tried to bring back Arisa, who died when she was a toddler, and being swallowed by the portal was the cost of that ritual.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Vagit]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/smtdx2tuhov.jpg]]

A priest from Russia who runs the Church of False Gods underneath the Liberators' hideout. In there you can conduct demon fusion.
----
* FusionDance: His main role is to help on with this.
* GratuitousRussian: Even after arriving to Japan, he still adds a few Russian words in sentences.
* HumanoidAbomination: [[spoiler:He later reveals that he's part of an experiment that turns him into half-demon]].
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: [[spoiler:Related to the above, his half-demon constitution allows him to detect the presence of demons.]]
* PrettyBoy: He's quite a looker. Megakin even introduces him as the team pretty boy.
* RecurringElement: Has obvious similarities to the [[Franchise/{{Persona}} Velvet Room Attendants]]: blond hair, carries a large book and assists in fusions, [[spoiler:and is not a normal human]].
* SensualSlavs: {{Downplayed}}, but he is still easy on the eyes alright.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kazufumi]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/smtdx2kazufumi.jpg]]

A history student working as a butler, Kazufumi runs the hideout's shop, where he sells rare and powerful occult items.
----

* BadassBookworm: A history student and an overall competent BattleButler.
* BattleButler: While he does not battle directly as a [=Dx2=], Kazufumi is quick with spell scrolls and demon traps for anyone foolish enough to attack his shop. Though he still expects ''someone'' to pay for them.
%%* PrettyBoy:
* SharpDressedMan: Appropriate for a BattleButler.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Himika]]

* SexyWhateverOutfit: Her miko outfit is quite revealing.
* ShoutOut:
** All but namedrops ''[[Anime/YurionIce Yuri!!! on Ice]]'' in her first conversation with the player.
** [[spoiler:The MC's Interlude is the Liberators basically enacting a mini-[[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Holy Grail War]] to amuse her.]]
[[/folder]]

!Acolytes
[[folder:As a group]]
The main villain of the story.
----
* ApocalypseCult: They want to summon Vanitas to destroy civilization. They start off pretty sophisticated, using technology and gullible minions to do their dirty work, but loss after loss turns them into unhinged cultists hellbent on doing as much mayhem as possible to summon Vanitas then and there.
* ArcVillain: They are primarily active in season 1.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hayate]]

* DiscOneFinalBoss: [[spoiler:In his half-demon form in Chapter 6, he's the first final boss of the Story Mode.]]
* TheDragon: Serves as this to Hawke. [[spoiler: In the Aura Gate 2, he has a Tam Lin, who Xana inherits after his death.]]
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler: Ixaya tries to have both him and Xana killed at Level 40 of Aura Gate 2, only for his Hollow minions to stop the attack with their bodies in one of their few acts of true free will. After Orcus is dealt with, Ixaya tries to gank Xana with a White Rider, only for Hayate to absorb the blow and allow for a counterattack. As he lays dying, he makes it clear it's not a HeroicSacrifice - if anything, he simply wasn't going to let the Hollows outshine him.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Joshua Hawke]]
An Australian who used to be the leader of a radical environmental group. Shows abnormal love for nature.

* ClimaxBoss: [[spoiler:He's the final enemy of the normal Chapter 7.]]
* EcoTerrorist: Natch. He uses violent methods to cause the destruction of humanity because he believes this will save the planet.
* EnemyMine: In Chapter 7A-9, he teams up with the Liberators for one fight to drive off hostile demons in [[spoiler:the BadFuture]].
* EvilIsNotAToy: While he intends to use Vanitas to reset humanity to the Stone Age, it's clear he's toying with forces he can't truly control. In the normal Chapter 7, [[spoiler:he is absorbed by Vanitas]], while the alternate Chapter 7 reveals [[spoiler:Vanitas will completely annihilate humanity, which is going too far even for him]].
* HeroicSacrifice: For a ''very'' loose value of the word "heroic". At the end of the alternate Chapter 7, [[spoiler:he sacrifices himself to give you the opening to defeat Einherjar]].

* WorkoutFanservice: In the opening he is fully shirtless while exercising.
[[/folder]]

* PantheraAwesome: His main demon is Ose. [[spoiler:It's also the demon he brings once he joins forces with Megakin & co.]]
* PapaWolf: He dotes on Honey Sweet, and [[spoiler:is quite agitated early in Season 2 after the Brotherhood of Harmony kidnaps her]].
* SmokingIsCool: Can be seen smoking in one potrait.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Honey Sweet]]
A mercenary under the Acolytes' paycheck who antagonizes the Liberators along with Vince.
----
* ArtificialHuman: She is a special Homunculus. Her original designation, HS-1, was supposed to stand for her role as the first Homunculus Supernormal.
* CreepyChild: Looks like a child, but is a Homunculus who has no problem dealing with gritty mercenary life.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: [[spoiler:When reprogrammed by Lindsey in chapter 10, she sports dull eyes on top of acting like a KillerRobot. Alternate MC later snaps her out of it.]]
* TheEmpath: She is able to sense the emotions of people around her.
* HybridPower: Her Homunculus composition makes her different from both human and demon, [[spoiler: and renders her immune to Nyarlathotep's illusions, which are tailored to either.]]
* AnIcePerson: Her primary demon is Tiamat when fought. [[spoiler:Unlike Vince, she doesn't bring it to the team upon joining, partly because her own skillset doesn't support Tiamat.]]
* StatusEffects: Her skillset revolves around buffs and debuffs triggered by Charming or Binding enemies. [[spoiler:While she uses Tiamat as her initial demon, by the time she becomes playable she's more closely associated with Mothman; she even carries a Mothman doll with her.]]
* SuperPrototype: She was meant to be only the first of a series of more advanced homunculi, meant to be indistinguishable from humans. Unfortunately for her maker, she was the program's sole success.
* TheyLookJustLikeEveryoneElse: Her original role as a homunculus.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Organ (Season 2 spoiler)]]
An Acolyte member who's hellbent on summoning Vanitas to kill all humans.
----
* AxCrazy: As Honey puts it, "she has 2000 screws loose".
* DemBones: Her main demon is Matador.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: The fact that she has orange hair, is batshit insane, comes from "Nation A", and storms a government building may remind people to what happened in the US early 2021.
* MisanthropeSupreme: She wants all humans dead, with or without Vanitas. Case in point: She has no issue ordering her henchmen to open fire on innocent civilians at a public place just to cover her escape.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: She is first introduced in-medias-res in Chapter 11 as a major threat, but she only appears on the second half on that chapter and dies by the end of it.

!Brotherhood of Harmony (Season 2 spoiler)
[[folder:As a group]]
A mysterious group who is driven by their dogma of "Unity" to, in their own words, save humanity from Vanitas.
----
* TheEvilsOfFreeWill: Similar to the classical SMT Law faction, the Brotherhood believes that stripping humanity of their free will is necessary to stop the spread of malice and prevent Vanitas from ending humanity.
* MakeWayForTheNewVillains: They massacre a gathering of the Acolytes, decapitating the group and taking their place in the grand scheme of things.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Lindsay Altskan]]
A top member of the Brotherhood. She is first seen in Intermission trying to abduct Princess Himiko, who is possessing Himika at that time.
----
* CoatCape: Wears a white coat over her turquoise military outfit.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: The left side of her face appears to have been ravaged.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Season 2 establishes that her main demon is Jeanne D'Arc.
* RichesToRags: She was born to a wealthy family, but several political catastrophe sent her family straight to poverty, forcing her to survive by any means necessary such as becoming an international terrorist.
* UndyingLoyalty: Phanuel was aware of her suffering and hatred towards the world, and so saved her from death and elected her as the archangel's champion. For this second chance in life, Lindsey is eternally grateful to Phanuel and will do everything as the archangel says.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Enlightened One]]
Amane Misaki, leader of the Brotherhood of Harmony.
----
* AffablyEvil: She's actually a very nice person, reining in the more bloodthirsty Lindsay whenever the situation calls for it, caring for the people who follow her dogma, and in general not particularly thrilled to resort to bloodshed. The only thing evil about her is that she leads a group who has no qualms about massacring for greater good.
* AlienNonInterferenceClause: Defied. While the rest of the archangels such as Michael stay their hands with regards to the Vanitas problem, she decided to confront the issue head on by establishing the Brotherhood.
* AntiMagic: When the last of the Acolytes try to use a magical field to set up a HomeFieldAdvantage, Amane dispels the field with little effort.
* BrainwashingForTheGreaterGood: This is her modus operandi in combating Vanitas; forcibly remove any ill-will from humans so that they will stop spreading malice.
* DidNotSeeThatComing: She is aware that there are several Key Factors among humanity, initially singling out the MC and Kokoro as such people. She does not expect, however, that the entire Tokyo branch Neo-Liberators turn out to be all Key Factors, which leads to her defeat.
* MagicMusic: She can sing a song that pacify humans globally. Alternate MC uses a few Demonites to shield the Neo-Liberators from its effect, but during the final battle with her, she focuses her song towards only the Neo-Liberators to bypass any protection. It is only because Ririn gains a HeroicSecondWind that she is foiled.
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: Her true identity is Phanuel, the archangel of penance.
[[/folder]]

!The Elements (Season 2 spoiler)
[[folder:As a group]]
A mysterious groups of hackers who directly opposes Brotherhood of Harmony using their dogma "Stand Alone".
----
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: They outright ask Megakin what's the point of the Liberators now that the enemies they were formed to combat have been killed.
* HollywoodHacking: Their hacking prowess is quite ridiculous. Chapter 12 reveals that they have a special demonic supercomuter Tupsimati which helps them with this task.
* IGaveMyWord: They honor their deal with Megakin after the Liberators do what they request.
* MalevolentMaskedMan: The few members we've seen so far are hiding behind white masks. The only exception so far is their leader, Period.
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: After the Brotherhood frames the remaining Liberators as terrorists, The Elements offers their help to clear the Liberators' name in exchange of attacking a Brotherhood facility.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Period]]
Leader of the Elements.
----
* AmbiguouslyHuman: His introduction sees him do things normal humans should not be able to do, such as dismissing the Liberators' barrier with little effort, summoning demons without app, and emitting strange dark aura. He later admits he is a demon, though his true identity has not been revealed.
[[/folder]]

!Hollows

[[folder:As a Group]]
A mysterious group that inhabits the Aura Gate 2 (or Hollow World) dungeon.
----
* ArtificialHuman: [[spoiler:They are tiny soul fragments carried by the Dragon Stream that coalesced into solid shapes with a burning desire to become human.]]
* IntriguedByHumanity: They're terrible at it, but they keep aping human behavior.
* ThemeNaming: Quite a number of Hollows have X somewhere in their name, such as the named Hollows below and Axihira who appears in Luminous Realm.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Xana]]

An unusual Hollow who, despite being interested in humans, isn't driven by the desire to become one.
----
* BequeathedPower: [[spoiler:Inherits Hayate's smartphone, and unusually, his contract with Tam Lin.]]
* DamageOverTime: One of her unique skills inflicts up to 1000 unblockable damage per turn to Hollow World enemies.
* EmeraldPower: Has brilliant green eyes.
* ForgivenButNotForgotten: [[spoiler:She's well aware the Liberators were the ones to kill Hayate in the first place. She's willing to fight and pull her weight, but the fact remains he was her biggest inspiration and savior, even above the MC.]]
* LastOfHisKind: [[spoiler:The last Hollow still alive after Ixaya consumed all others at the end of Aura Gate 2's fiftieth level.]]
* OptionalPartyMember: After clearing Aura Gate 2's fiftieth level.
* SituationalSword: Just as Seiran has skills tailor-made for Aura Gate 1, Xana has skills that helps your exploration in Hollow World.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ixaya]]
A mysterious Hollow that knows a lot more than she's willing to say about the Hollow World.
----
* AssimilationPlot: Her ultimate goal is to absorb all of the stray soul fragments that make up the Hollows and become a real human.
* BecomeARealBoy: Her endgame. Unfortunately, achieving it will kill all other Hollows and the MC.
* BigBad: She shows her colors when unleashing White Rider as early as Floor 10 of the Hollow World, and keeps goading and taunting the MC and Xana to go further and deeper into the Hollow World.
* ClippedWingAngel: [[spoiler:After being defeated in her Seraph form, she refuses to give up and collapses into a useless Black Ooze. Despite having enormous HP tanks, she has no longer any support and no useful attacks or passives, without even any resistances - basically, she's left a sitting duck just waiting to be mauled as she fruitlessly struggles to remain alive.]]
* EvilIsPetty: Strictly speaking, it turns out she doesn't need Xana for her plan, but in the end she chooses to eat her anyway for shoving the MC away from her attack.
* StoneWall / LightningBruiser: She manages to be both of these tropes in her boss battle. She transforms herself into a Seraph and fights alongside souped-up versions of Rama and Alilat - Rama will absorb Phys, Fire and Ice, while Alilat will repel Force, Elec, Light and Dark. Both Rama and Alilat carry a passive that punishes the attacker if any of their Drains or Repels is triggered with a 25% HP untyped attack and an additional chance to slap an additional ailment. Seraph Resists everything, auto-casts a Luster Candy at the start of her turn, uses another untyped 20% HP damage attack and an even nastier final Almighty attack when she's down to less than 30% of her HP, and as a final insult, all of them have a passive that reduces the damage Seraph takes by 33%.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Xibuki]]
A dim-witted Hollow that somehow keeps getting ahead of the MC and Xana as they make their way through the Hollow World.
----
* DirtyCoward: Whenever this guy pops up, he either guides the MC into a trap or tries to kill them himself. He's not too bright or strong.
[[/folder]]

!Miscellaneous/Unaffiliated Characters
[[folder:Einherjar]]
The mysterious benefactor for the Liberators.
----

* BigGood: Just about the closest thing the game has to one.
* ClassyCane: Goes well with his HighClassGlass.
* DemonLordsAndArchdevils: [[spoiler: A throwaway line by Ame no Uzume implies he's the demon Mephistopheles; as additional proof, the Mastema he summons in the alternate Chapter 7 has the unique passive Mephisto's Blessing.]]
* ExactWords: [[spoiler:He uses this to justify engaging the Protagonist in the Alternate Chapter 7. He entrusted the choice of the future "to the Liberators". But since the MC has joined the Acolytes, they no longer count, leaving him free to act.]]
* GreaterScopeParagon: Has a semi-neutral involvement in the story and his background is a mystery.
* HighClassGlass: Wears a monocle.
* {{Hypocrite}}: [[spoiler:He claims to give the choice of future to the Liberators... but there's evidence that he allows it at least in part because they are following his own preferred path.]]
* {{Superboss}}: [[spoiler:He's the final boss of the Alternate Chapter 7. His main demons (Trumpeter in round 1 and Mastema in round 2) can heal his party each turn, and Mastema also grants a free Luster Candy every turn. He's so damn strong that simply spamming revives with gems is not going to allow you to brute-force your way past him.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jabo Kakuryu]]
A demon seeking to support Vanitas, and the Acolytes by extension.
----
* ActuallyADoombot: [[spoiler:He serves as the final boss in Chapter 12... except that the real him is actually away from the scene, having benefited from MC's alternate self successfully coaxing the MC to kill the body double.]]
* CoatCape: Wears his coat over his shoulders. Hilariously, the MC can comment on how cool it looks, irritating the rest of the Liberators.
* DemonLordsAndArchdevils: He's actually the demon Astaroth. [[spoiler:In a case of GameplayAndStoryIntegration, playable Astaroth will make a reference to his NotSoOmniscientAfterAll status, wishing to see the player lead him to a future he can't see.]]
* NotSoOmniscientAfterAll: The Liberators goad him into admitting that while his omniscience is ''almost'' perfect, he can't see the consequences of his own actions, giving them an opening to reject him. [[spoiler:In Chapter 12, he admits he can't predict the movements of other divine beings, as hinted in Alter World where someone has blindsided him and triggered the apocalypse sooner than he thinks.]]
* TheOmniscient: ''Claims'' to be able to see the futures of everyone.
* UnspokenPlanGuarantee: [[spoiler:After dealing with Blue Seed, a new Liberator being used as a disposable soldier by the angels, he's confronted on his manipulation by Alter-World MC, and insists that though he ''could'' give them the answers, he sincerely feels it will work out better if they find some answers on their own - and the time to come clean is approaching ''fast'' one way or the other.]]
* WeCanRuleTogether: Appears to create the first divergence of the story. Agreeing to head over and talk to Joshua peacefully, betraying the Liberators, leads to an alternate version of Chapter 7.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Spoiler Character]]
The MC's AlternateSelf hailing from the future where they decided to take up the Acolytes' offer.

* BackstoryInvader: A variant. After returning to the past, to match what the Liberators know about the destruction of their higher hierarchy, they introduce themselves as a Liberator from another branch, from which they're the SoleSurvivor. In this capacity, they present considerable insight into the Brotherhood of Harmony, even personally intervening to input the code that stops Honey's rampage.
* BeingEvilSucks: Alter-World MC is... less than enthusiastic about the choices they've made. [[spoiler:As leader of the Acolytes, they oversaw a particularly horrible experiment on human-demon fusion; even if they insisted the test subjects be released if no success was forthcoming and that their quality of life be preserved as much as possible, their guilt is still palpable.]]
* BerserkButton: Do NOT harm their Pixie companion! During Scorched Akihabara, a whole group of Hua Po can do nothing but run away in terror when they charge at them, after seeing how the demons beat her up.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The Alter-World levels show what would have happened to the mainline MC had they chosen the Alternate future.
* FallenHero: Abandoned the Liberators in hopes of saving the world via the Acolytes' methods. While this failed, in the end they still desperately wish to help people.
* FondMemoriesThatCouldHaveBeen: They are shown what would have happened had they decided to stick with the Liberators through the Interlude, though to make it clear how different the timeline would have been, Jabo shows them a timeline where they're the opposite gender.
* FragileSpeedster: They use a Hresvelgr.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: The Battle Tower MC mentions having made contact with "Aion" and something called "Mater", "an Aion" whose power they used to create the Battle Tower. This power allows them to select specific worlds to travel or pull things from by reaching into "the Truth". They know far more, but flatly refuse to give any more info to Alter-World MC.
* FutureMeScaresMe: They meet yet another possible instance of themselves in Tokyo Skytree, which has turned into a weak spot allowing for connections to different instances of Alter-World. Disturbingly, this future self has made contact with Aion and gained considerable power, to the point [[NoChallengeEqualsNoSatisfaction nothing can challenge them in their home reality]]; [[LonelyAtTheTop bored with power]], they became a DimensionalTraveler. This future self wishes to see who of the different possibilities is the strongest, so they've turned the Skytree into a battle royale where the strongest are allowed to climb up the tower to reach them, daring Alter-World MC to meet them at the tower's summit.
* FusionDance: One of the extremely few positive upshots of joining the Acolytes was gaining access to their Armaments technology, allowing them to fuse demons into weapons and armor, giving them the necessary power to survive the horrors of the Alter-World.
* KnightInSourArmor: They fucked up, they know it, and it's killing them inside. They also keep trying to help others, even if they immediately drop into a grimace. The events at Alter-World Yotsuya and Akihabara don't exactly help, though they succeed in saving Shinagawa.
* LastOfHisKind: The Alternate Chapter 7 ends with them being the last human alive after a nuclear war. Guess shacking up with the Acolytes wasn't such a hot idea, was it?
** Their Pixie companion is a variation. The Blasted Ueno flashbacks reveal she comes from an AlternateUniverse herself, and got sucked into Alter-World by accident. In a way, she's just as lonely as the Alter-World MC.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Over the course of the Alter World missions it becomes very obvious that the Pixie they found and befriended is this for them. They were going to kill themselves by jumping of a cliff due to their guilt, till they found Pixie. This seems to be true in reverse as Pixie herself has no one else after accidentally ending up in Alter-World. Having nothing left is something the two have bonded over, as revealed during Blasted Ueno.
* LotusEaterMachine: Briefly gets stuck in the illusory mists of Alter-World Akihabara. They briefly experience a return to the good old days of the Liberators, though in the end they reject the illusion, to the fury of the false Liberators, who tear them for abandoning them once more. Still, they succeed in breaking the mist's hold on them to save their Pixie companion.
* PyrrhicVictory: The Interlude shows a bit of the Alternate Chapter 7's Main Character, who has successfully worked out some of the significance behind Vanitas and Aion. A pity they're now alone in a broken timeline.
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: After witnessing the Interlude, they pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and have Jabo send them back in time to fix things.
* SuddenlyVoiced: During the Intermission, they're as chatty as any other NPC.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kokoro (Season 2 spoilers)]]
A virtual [=VTuber=] who is interested in the fate of mankind.
----
* CaptainObvious: When the Liberators ask her what she is since she is so unusual, she replies that she's not a human. The Liberators' reaction is a mass "Well, duh!".
* TheEmpath: Her true status as a priestess of the Dragon Stream allows her to sense emotions in the Dragon Stream.
* VirtualCelebrity: She is a virtual V-Tuber.
* WhamLine: Her angry response to Organ claiming that she wants to use Vanitas to kill all humans is that Organ has no idea what Vanitas is...
--> '''Kokoro''': Because I am a priestess of Vanitas!
