! The Whole Team

* BlushSticker: All of them except for Rollpanna, since the mask covers her mouth.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Regardless of the situation, they always like to help others.
* ColorCodedCharacters: Anpanman wears red, yellow and brown. Shokupanman wears white and red. Currypanman wears yellow and orange. Melonpanna wears green. Rollpanna wears blue. Creampanda wears yellow and red.
* IconicSequelCharacter: Melonpanna, Rollpanna and Creampanda became popular characters after the show passed over 200 episodes.
* KeepItForeign: When the series was dubbed in English, about 5/6 of the heroes kept their names intact from the original language.
* MobileFishbowl: They mostly wear one if they're in the rain, snow, or underwater.
* LimitedWardrobe: {{Played With}}. While they don't wear anything other than their superhero gear, they do wear something over it.
* SuperheroesWearCapes: All of them wear one for a good reason. This gives them the ability to fly.
* VagueAge: Despite being bread-related, the ages on the main heroes are very vague. However, Creampanda seems to be the youngest.

!Anpanman/(アンパンマン)
[[quoteright:279:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anpanman_4542.png]]

-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KeikoToda (Japanese), Ghia Burns (English), Creator/CristinaHernandez (Latin American Spanish)

The main protagonist of the series. He was born from the last batch of anpans made by Uncle Jam as a group of shooting stars fell from the sky.

* ArtEvolution: His eyes became bigger.
* AttackItsWeakPoint: See Weaksauce Weakness.
* BabyTalk: Averted when he was first born. However, played straight when he transformed into one.
* BatSignal: He has one, but this is used to signal Uncle Jam if his head is damaged.
* BilingualDialogue: In the Edutainment specials. At first, he had trouble understanding English in the early specials. He seemed to get better when he helped translate what Alpoo and Betan were saying to Melonpanna.
* CallingYourAttacks: ''AN-PUNCH!!''
** ''DOUBLE-PUNCH!!'' whenever he pairs up with Shokupanman, Currypanman, Melonpanna, or Rollpanna.
** ''TRIPLE-PUNCH!!'' whenever he's paired with Shokupanman and Currypanman, or Melonpanna and Rollpanna.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** In the early days of the show, even if he was somewhat battered or wet, Anpanman can still pick up a fight.
* ChestInsignia: A yellow smiley face.
* CoolBigBro: To Melonpanna and Creampanda.
* DressingAsTheEnemy: He dressed up as Baikinman in Don Ki Hotate's debut episode so he could make Ki Hote believe that he's good at battle.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness:
** In the early episodes, Anpanman used to take his nose off. This was never brought up again.
* EdibleThemeNaming: He is based on an anpan, a Japanese sweet roll most commonly filled with red bean paste.
* EleventhHourSuperpower: There are a few times when he becomes more powerful than before. This is mostly due to a change in one of the ingredients that Uncle Jam and Butterko use for his head, mostly because of Baikinman's involvement. However, this only lasts either for the rest of the episode, or until he gets a new head.
** One example was in the second episode, where Uncle Jam made a large head for Anpanman when Baikinman was attacking the bakery with a giant cloud.
** Another example was when after Baikinman spoiled Anpanman's new head with coffee, Uncle Jam decided to make a new head, but in coffee flavor, which not only made Anpanman powerful, but also made his head a different color.
** There was also an episode where he had a crayon-drawn head. However, unlike the coffee one, the punches aren't as effective.
** He also had a head that was filled with white cream, which makes himself completely bright like a light bulb.
* FascinatingEyebrow: Had this trait in the early episodes.
* FlyCrazy: Started out like this in the first episode, but overcomes it later.
* IdealHero: Takashi Yanase based him on his experience during [[UsefulNotes/WorldWarII the war]] as he was someone who would help give food to hungry people.
* InstantBandages: Had these after his nose was stung by a bee in one of the edutainment specials.
* LargeHam: While not always, he did become one when his head was coffee flavored.
* MenDontCry: He almost cried in the 2007 film short when Horako was telling a [[TearJerker tear-jerking]] event about her past. He also did this in one of the early edutainment specials where he cried because he dropped his ice cream cone.
* TheNeedless: He doesn't eat any type of food. [[WordOfSaintPaul The official website]] states that the filling inside his head gives him sustenance. Although there was a scene in one of the early edutainment specials where he was about to eat an ice cream cone.
* NiceGuy: He's friendly, cheerful, and always willing to help anyone who needs it.
* NoNose: His nose can detach, as seen from Rakugaki Kozou's debut episode. Though this never happened again.
* NotSoStoic: Although there are a few times where he might display other emotions besides being happy, sad, and angry.
* OnlySaneMan: He can be this if Shokupanman and Currypanman don't get along.
* RedIsHeroic: His superhero outfit is mostly red with a few yellow spots.
* RedOniBlueOni: In the Edutainment episodes, he's the blue to Baikinman's red.
* SecretKeeper: He's kept Naganegiman's real identity a secret since his debut episode. He and the rest of the Bakery staff, to be exact.
* SoapOperaRapidAgingSyndrome: In his first appearance, he was an infant/toddler until the second half of the episode. {{Justified}} since he was born from the stars.
* StageFright: Yes, even the strongest superhero can have stage fright.
* SuperMode: He had one in the 908th episode. Though he never physically changed, he had a super powerful punch.
* ThemeMusicPowerUp: Pretty much whenever he gets a new head, a powerful music theme will play in the background. This was also used when he was firstborn.
* ATwinkleInTheSky:
** This happens to him if Baikinman punches him back.
** Anpanman does an inverse of this when he flies.
* VocalEvolution: In the early episodes, his voice was somewhat a kid-like type. This was later changed to a firm and a bit older voice. This may be due to his voice actress aging, however.
* WeaksauceWeakness: If his head gets wet from any form of liquid (eg. water, mud, oil), gets squished, or bits of his head are taken off, he becomes powerless.

! Shokupanman/(しょくぱんまん)
[[quoteright:234:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shokupanman_4988.png]]

--> '''Voiced by:''' Creator/SumiShimamoto (Japanese), Creator/KenyuHoriuchi (Japanese, ''Blue Shokupanman''), Creator/YukoSanpei (Japanese, ''Pink Shokupanman''), Creator/VictorUgarte (Latin American Spanish)

One of Anpanman's partners. He is seen usually driving his white truck delivering bread.
* BigOlEyebrows: His blue clone had these.
* BroughtToYouByTheLetterS: His logo is a backward "S".
* CallingYourAttacks: ''SHOKU-PUNCH!!''
** ''DOUBLE-PUNCH!!'' whenever he pairs up with Anpanman, Currypanman, Melonpanna, or Rollpanna.
** ''TRIPLE-PUNCH'' whenever he pairs up with both Anpanman and Currypanman.
* CoolCar/ WeaponizedCar: His truck.
* DatingCatwoman: With Dokinchan, though only when she's in disguise.
* LargeHam: Pretty much whenever something good happens, he'll explain that it's so beautiful. Especially when it's Christmas, he likes to explain a lot about why it's wonderful. This gives Currypanman the itches.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: One episode has him gain two clones of himself with different personalities.
* MeaningfulName: His name is a translation of "a slice of white bread".
* OddNameOut: Out of the six heroes, he is the only one to have his name translated in the English dub.
* RealMenWearPink: His second clone wore this.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Currypanman's red.
** Surprisingly, his Blue clone is the red to Pink's blue.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Shokupanman became Black Shokupanman to fight Anpanman along with Black Currypanman and Black Rollpanna when Black Rollpanna turned both Shokupanman and Currypanman evil using her black roll ribbon in the 2002 film.
* TakenForGranite: Unfortunately, he suffers this a lot in both films and the TV series.
* VanityLicensePlate: On his original truck before he upgraded it, the back license plate used to be 25-25.

! Currypanman/(カレーパンマン)
[[quoteright:246:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/currypanman_6031.png]]

-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MichiyoYanagisawa, Creator/ChikaSakamoto (''Super Spicy Currypanman''), Creator/MinaTominaga (''Ultra Mild Currypanman'')

One of Anpanman's partners.
* CallingYourAttacks: ''CURRY-PUNCH!!''
** ''DOUBLE-PUNCH!!'' whenever he pairs up with Anpanman, Shokupanman, Melonpanna, or Rollpanna.
* ChestInsignia: A yellow lemon-shaped face that resembles himself.
* EdibleThemeNaming: He is based on a curry bread.
* EleventhHourSuperpower: Similar to Anpanman, he gets temporary powers for the rest of the episode. Here, he can refill his head with different flavors of curry.
* HeroicFatigue: In one episode, he states that he'll always help out someone no matter what. This gives Baikinman the advantage to make Currypanman do too many things so he'll wear out.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: One episode has him with two clones of himself with different personalities. One was a brute who makes ultra-spicy curry, while the other is a softie who makes mild curry.
* OneNoteCook: {{Inverted}}. While he's best known for making curry, he can also cook other dishes.
* RealMenHateSugar: He doesn't like eating sweets a lot.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Shokupanman's blue. He's also the red to Unadonman and Princess Salad's blue. Surprisingly, he's the blue to Matsutakeman's red.
* SecondEpisodeIntroduction: Currypanman was introduced in the second episode.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Like Shokupanman being Black Shokupanman in the 2002 flim, Currypanman became Black Currypanman when Black Rollpanna turned them evil.
* SuperSpit: One of his powers is spitting curry. The only downside is that he'll get weak if he uses all of it.
* ThemeMusicPowerUp: Similar to Anpanman, he has one whenever he gets refilled with curry. The only major difference is that there's different music and there are fireworks in the background.

! Melonpanna/(メロンパンナ)
[[quoteright:198:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/melonpanna_2267.png]]

-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MikaKanai
The lone female of the main heroes. She was created by Uncle Jam after they found "The Flower of Love" with the help of the same shooting stars that created Anpanman.
* BadassAdorable: She's both very cute and very competent at fighting.
* BroughtToYouByTheLetterS : Both her logo emblem and her hair are a lowercase "m".
* ButtMonkey: She suffered this a few times in the 90s episodes. This was toned down after Creampanda's debut episode.
* CallingYourAttacks: ''MERO-MERO-PUNCH!!''
** ''DOUBLE-PUNCH!!'' whenever she pairs up with Anpanman, Shokupanman, Currypanman, or Rollpanna.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Melonpanna's personality was different from when she was first new in the team to the current episodes.
** Early on in the show, she doesn't like it if anybody calls her a panda. This vanished after Creampanda appeared in the show and later took that trait.
** Melonpanna was more bratty and a jerk who was in the same line as Dokinchan. She softens up once Rollpanna and Creampanda later appear and by the time the show transitions to digital ink, she becomes more of a motherly figure.
** She also suffered a lot of actions due to her inexperience.
* ChildishOlderSibling: She is this to Rollpanna. Though Melonpanna refers to Rollpanna as her big sister (due to Rollpanna being the taller and more mature of the two), she is actually the older of the two.
* CoolMask: While she doesn't wear one, the diamond imprints on her eyes represent one.
* EdibleThemeNaming: She is based on a melon bread.
* [[EvilCounterpart Good Counterpart]]: Though not entirely evil, she can be considered a good counterpart to Dokinchan, since they have contrasting colors and they have something related to hearts. This was also more apparent when Melonpanna first appeared when they were in equal lengths of being jerks.
* LanguageBarrier: She had trouble understanding what Alpoo and Betan were saying. Keep in mind, that the show is made in Japan.
* MeaningfulName: Her attack "Mero mero" is Japanese for "totally in love".
* PromotionToOpeningTitles: Since the fourth opening.
* RedOniBlueOni: She's the calm and kind hearted blue to Creampanda's hotheaded red.
* SiblingYinYang: She is kind and sensitive compared to her older sister.
* TokenGirl
** TwoGirlsToATeam: Becomes this when Rollpanna joins in.
* WolverinePublicity: When the rest of the 1991 and 1994 collections were being released on DVD, she was one of the characters shown on patterns. However, she didn't exist in the 1991 collection as those episodes were made two years before she existed. This is also true for volumes 2 ad 3 of the 1994 collection, though is understandable as Melonpanna does appear in most of the volumes and is likely done to keep in line with the rest of the collection.

! Rollpanna/(ロールパンナ)
[[quoteright:306:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rollpanna_8668.png]]

--> '''Voiced by:''' Creator/MinaTominaga
Melonpanna's sister. She was originally intended to be similar to Melonpanna. However, thanks to Baikinman poisoning the melon bread, she has two different hearts.

* AmbiguouslyLesbian: She has only ever experienced what seems to be an attraction to other female characters. In the movie ''Secret of the Cloud-sailing Castle'', it is ''very heavily'' implied there is something in the air between her and Laura.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Even though she's made from a bread roll, she looks more humanoid than the other heroes due to most of her head covered up. The fact that unlike her sister her name isn't based on an existing bread.
%% Doesnt' explain what the reaction is.* BerserkButton: Pretty much if she sees Anpanman.
%% ** Her heart of darkness can also be triggered when Baikinman triggers something that makes her upset or with his mecha.
* BigLittleSister: Interestingly, though she is mentally and biologically more mature than Melonpanna, Rollpanna is technically the younger of the sisters as she came out of the oven ''after'' Melonpanna. Nonetheless, Melonpanna refers to her as her older sister.
* BigSisterInstinct: Whenever some terrible happens to her sister, she comes in to help out.
* [[BroughtToYouByTheLetterS Brought To You By The Letter R]]
* ChildishOlderSibling: She is this to Melonpanna. Though Melonpanna refers to Rollpanna as her big sister (due to Rollpanna being the taller and more mature of the two), she is actually the younger of the two.
* CoolBigSis: Melonpanna and Creampanna see this in her.
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler: Suffers one in "Secret of the Cloud-Sailing Castle"]].
* TheDragon: To Baikinman, depending the situation.
* EdibleThemeNaming: She was based on a "Bread Roll"
* GoodColorsEvilColors: She wears blue and red as her good colors. Black and blue as her evil.
* GoodEyesEvilEyes: She has [[InnocentBlueEyes blue eyes]] when she's good. [[RedEyesTakeWarning Red eyes]] when she's evil.
* FearfulSymmetry: She does this a few times with Anpanman since they're equally matched. Also did this with her evil counterpart self.
* LethalChef: In the 1997 film, she had trouble trying to make Anpanman's new head. She eventually got better.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: This happened to her when Dr. Hiyari created an experiment that would split both her good and evil counterparts apart. Unfortunately, this makes her evil side purely corrupted, while her other half is weak.
* LonersAreFreaks: Pretty much the main reason why she's alone is because she doesn't want to harm anyone.
* PromotionToOpeningTitles: Since the fifth opening.
* RedOniBlueOni: She's both! Her red heart represents her good side, while her blue one represents her dark side.
* {{Sarashi}}: She wears a cloth wrapped around her head as her mask.
* ShoutOut: She has two hearts, one red and one blue - just like [[Manga/PrincessKnight Princess Sapphire]].
* SiblingYinYang: She's more dark and violent than her younger sister.
* SpinAttack: Her main attack with her golden gymnastics ribbon. She can use this to wrap up her enemies or create [[TornadoMove tornadoes]].
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Whenever her blue heart triggers, she'll turn dark and go on a rampage.
* TakenForGranite: Her pure evil counterpart can turn anyone she captures with her ribbon to stone.
* TwoGirlsToATeam: Becomes this when she joins in with her sister.

! Creampanda/(クリームパンダ)
[[quoteright:266:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/creampanna_9564.png]]

--> '''Voiced by:''' Creator/MikiNagasawa

The fifth member of the team (sixth if you count Rollpanna) and the foster brother to Melonpanna.

* ApologisesALot: He does this a lot when he's paired up with Princess Durian.
* BreakingOldTrends: Unlike the other 5 heroes, Creampanda is the first one to be the youngest in both age and episode-wise. He is also the first hero since Shokupanman not to be created by Uncle Jam. Also like Shokupanman, Creampanda is the first hero not to be introduced in a 100th episode (Melonpanna and Rollpanna debuted in episodes 200 and 300 respectively).
* BrotherSisterTeam: With Melonpanna.
* [[BroughtToYouByTheLetterS Brought To You By The Letter C]]
* ButtMonkey: Suffers from this along with Cheese when they spend the day with Princess Durian.
* CallingYourAttacks: '''Guu-Choki-Punch!!'''
* CoolMask: His eyes represent a panda.
* CousinOliver: He is the youngest member of the team once the anime was a decade and was made to make Melonpanna be more nicer as to take her naive traits onto him. Despite that, Creampanda proves to be a reliable character in the show.
* CuteBruiser: Despite not being the strongest, he still likes to fight.
* {{Determinator}}: As stated before, he has a heroic self esteem.
* EdibleThemeNaming: He is based on a Japanese Cream pan, which is bread buns filled with custard.
* IAmNotWeasel: He doesn't take it kindly if you just call him panda.
* PunnyName: A portmanteau of "Cream pan" and "panda".
* RedOniBlueOni: He's the red to Melonpanna's blue.
* UseYourHead: Pretty much his main method of attack, since his head is shaped like a head. It doesn't always work, however.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Bakery Staff]]

! Uncle Jam/(ジャムおじさん)
[[quoteright:293:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uncle_jam_5762.png]]

--> '''Voiced by:''' Hiroshi Masuoka (''original''), Creator/KoichiYamadera (''current'') (Japanese), Creator/JoseLuisOrozco (Latin American Spanish)

The owner of the bakery where Anpanman lives. He is very good at making bread and is also a mechanic.

* AcePilot: Prior to his current job, he used to be a pilot. He still pulls this off after rebuilding the plane he had a long time ago.
* ArtEvolution: His eyes became bigger.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Pretty much the plane he built. The wings are made of hard bread, but they can be destroyed by a form of liquid.
* [[BroughtToYouByTheLetterS Brought To You By The Letter J]]: His coffee mug and his plane have this.
* CoolCar: The Anpanman-Mobile. It has also a bakery inside, which is helpful when he needs to make a new head for Anpanman. It can also turn into a boat, a submarine, and a aircraft.
** WeaponizedCar: While it doesn't have weapons, it does have an extended punching glove that pops out from the nose.
* ADayInTheLimelight: While he does appear in every episode, he does have a few episodes to himself. The most noticeable example is seeing what he does outside his normal job.
* DisneyDeath: In the first episode, he tries to rescue Anpanman (back when he was a child) and falls off a cliff. Fortunately, he was saved by Anpanman.
* GadgeteerGenius: He's very good at building and fixing any form of machinery.
* MistakenIdentity: There are a few times that Baikinman will often disguise himself as Uncle Jam. One was to convince Tanuki-Oni that Butterko was in trouble, and another was to steal a wish from the Lamp Giant. He even did this in the Anpanman film 2011 to kidnap Kokorin in his fake Anpanman mobile and transform into his berserk form to rampage his home city.
* ParentalSubstitute: He's pretty much the father/grandfather/uncle figure to everyone that resides at the bakery.

! Butterko/(バタコさん)
[[quoteright:317:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/batako_5220.png]]

--> '''Voiced by:''' Creator/ReiSakuma (Japanese), Adriana Nuñez (Latin American Spanish)

Uncle Jam's assistant. She helps out with making goods and sewing the heroes' capes whenever they get snagged.

* ADayInTheLimelight: She had a few episodes to herself, like when we see what she does when Uncle Jam is away.
* GenderFlipped: See Lost In Translation.
* LostInTranslation: When translating her Japanese name, ''-san'' is ambiguous enough to translate to either "Mr." or "Ms.", which can be confusing for some who haven't watched the anime since [[ViewerGenderConfusion she does look more a like a boy]]. [[EpilepticTrees Some viewers]] guessed that she was possibly a boy before the anime's existence.
* ShonenHair: She seems to have this.
* TokenGirl: Before Melonpanna's debut, she was the only female in the bakery.
* VagueAge: It's unknown what her exact age is as the term "san" means "Mr./Miss", meaning she could be a young adult. But her has tendencies to like childish things at times due to the nature of the show.

! Cheese/(めいけんチーズ)
[[quoteright:292:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cheese_9190.png]]

-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KoichiYamadera

The pet dog to the Bakery. He was first lost in the woods after his original owner left him, but Anpanman soon found him and he's been part of the family ever since.

* ActionPet: He's very helpful, and he even drives the Anpanman-Mobile whenever Uncle Jam has to make Anpanman's new head!
* CoolPlane: He has a plane called "Chizubaketto-go" which he uses to take Rare Cheese over the skies.
* TheNoseKnows: Because he's a dog, he can identify where anyone or anything is. He can also sniff out food.
* SpeechImpairedAnimal: Though he never talks, he can understand others very well. He can even mimic other characters to describe the situation.
* ThoseTwoGuys: He's usually paired up with Creampanda.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Allies]]

! Hamigakiman/(はみがきまん)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hamigakiman_9561.png]]

-->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KanetoShiozawa (''original appearance - 2000''), Creator/DaisukeSakaguchi (''current'')

A living tube of toothpaste who protects others from cavities and toothaches.

* GratuitousEnglish: He says "Good Morning!" whenever he shows up.
* MeaningfulName: '''Hamigaki''' means toothpaste in Japanese.
* MistakenIdentity: In his debut episode, everyone blames him for giving them the germ brushes. In reality, it was Bakinman in disguise giving out the affected brushes.
* NeatFreak: While not a complete one, he does try to help prevent cavities.
* PromotionToOpeningTitles: Since the third opening.

! Omusubiman/(おむすびまん)
[[quoteright:332:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/omusubiman.png]]
--> '''Voiced by:''' Creator/HisakoKyoda
-->'''Debut:''' 4b

A rice ball-headed man who travels around, doing good deeds by protecting the innocent and stop any harmful acts from those are evil. He is also Komusubiman's mentor.

He first meets Anpanman after Baikinman traps him inside a large boulder and stops the villain from his act. Anpanman introduced himself and later the bakery crew, and the rice ball man agreed to stay with them for a while but had to leave after he finished the errands. Baikinman decides to get back at Omusubiman from their first encounter by baiting him, but none of the traps work until he decides to pretend that Batako is in trouble. This causes Omusubiman to fall inside a pitfall created by Baikinman, and later baits Anpanman about what happened to his new ally, but this is also a trap for the hero. However, Omusubiman was able to prevent this as he vented out steam from his head and they escaped soon after. Anpanman then tells Batako what happened, but he sees that Omusubiman just left to continue with his journey.
----
* AllAsiansWearConicalStrawHats: Played straight, but in a good way. He can also use this as either a FlyingWeapon or to ride on.
* BreakoutCharacter: He and Komusubiman were so popular that they appeared in a few film shorts.
* EdibleBludgeon: He uses umeboshi (pickled plums) on enemies.
* EdibleThemeNaming: '''Omusubi''' is another word for rice-ball.
* PowerUpFood: Eating umeboshi can make him powerful.
* PromotionToOpeningTitles: Since the third opening.
* {{Ronin}}
* VagueAge: It's never stated how old Omusubiman is. He is often seen with Umeboshibi Baaya and some of the episodes imply that they're more than just friends, which parallels with Komusubiman and Umeko-chan (Umeboshibi Baaya's granddaughter). Which implies that he might be a senior. But then eariler episodes imply that Omusubiman has some feelings for Batako, who herself is somewhat a young adult. However because of the nature of the show's NoHuggingNoKissing policy, it's unknown if that is the case.
