!The Scholomance: Rookie Class

header:Emily and her allies

!!Emily Holland

The protagonist of the story. Emily is a witch who desperately wants to fight evil but is badly defeated on her first mission for Knightcharm Academy, to the point where she's barred from going into the field again. After being handpicked by Lauren, she decides to infiltrate the Scholomance in an effort to undermine it from within and make up for her errors, but she soon learns that's much easier said than done.

----
* AntiHero: Emily quickly finds herself pulled in this direction when she runs away from Knightcharm (a good magic school) to join the Scholomance. Her goal really is to undermine her new school, but to do that she needs to bolster her standing in the school, which she knows will mean doing some bad things.
* ArsenalAttire: Emily eventually works magical amulets into her shoes. These allow her to easily project shields below her to launch herself upwards or use them as midair platforms.
* BarrierWarrior: One of Emily's most common and versatile spells are the shields she summons from her pentacle amulet. She uses them to protect herself, to bash into other people, and even as platforms. She later learns how to cast the shields under her and push them against the ground in order to propel herself into the air, giving her an agility advantage over some opponents.
* BloodKnight: Emily slowly realizes these tendencies in herself. A key moment is when she learns Lily is going to cheat during the final orientation race (which she and Emily are running together). Emily then realizes that she doesn't actually want Lily to be disqualified over this; Emily knows Lily is monstrously evil and that she'll do horrible things if nobody stops her, and Emily wants to be the one who personally thrashes Lily and teaches her what happens to evil witches who try to hurt others. As such, when Lauren notes that she's not disqualifying Lily despite noticing the cheating, Emily does not complain.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Even though she knows it's a bad idea to make enemies of her classmates, she can't stop herself from standing up to them if they attack the less-evil of her classmates. For instance, she almost immediately draws the ire of the necromancers when she stops Julia from killing Yawkly, who had previously indicated that she didn't like violence and disagreed with the Scholomance's general philosophy.
* CombatPragmatist: Emily’s main magical skill at first seems to be summoning defensive spells, like shields, with the aid of a magical amulet she crafted. But even though she (unlike Imogene, Hannah, and the Scholomance attackers) doesn't have magic which is explicitly for attacking, she quickly learns how to use the shields offensively (by slamming them into people so they are thrown into dangerous positions or even death traps) and for maneuverability (by knocking them into herself to give her an extra push when she can’t quite jump somewhere). Lauren claims to be impressed by this and says that her cleverness and versatility are reasons why she thinks Emily will do well at the Scholomance.
* Determinator: She displays this quality. Even when she’s totally outmatched, and no matter how dangerous the situation, she keeps on fighting. Lauren claims this is one quality which makes her think Emily would make a good Scholomance student.
* HiddenWeapons: While she openly brandishes the amulet that she wears around her neck, she conceals two more in her shoes where her opponents can't see them.
* HonorBeforeReason: Emily's zeal to no longer be a burden on those close to her extends to her refusing charity when offered, even when she desperately needs help. She insists on being able to repay people in kind before she'll allow them to do things with her. This comes up often with her roommate Megumi, who tries a few times to give her support only to be rebuffed. It also comes up when Yawkly tries to give her a powerful charm and Emily again refuses to accept the gift.
* IJustWantToBeBadass: Emily wants to be a hero who stands up to evil and defeats powerful villains, though as she learns early on, wanting that and actually being such a hero are two very different things. When Emily later decides to join the Scholomance, she tells herself that her main reason is to undermine the school, but she has to admit to herself that she's also hoping she can use the school's training to becomestronger and more capable so that she'll actually be able to fight villains like she dreamed of doing.
* ImprovisedPlatform: Emily learns to use her shields to create these, which give her an edge in battle.
* ItemCrafting: Emily's main skill seems to be this.
* KickChick: After she crafts more amulets and works them into her shoes, Emily adopts a fighting style that is centered on kicks so that she can use the power of her amulets to amplify her attacks.
* LightEmUp: After orientation, Emily crafts a ring which can shoot beams of light to blind her opponents.
* TheMole: Emily aims to be this at the Scholomance, seeking to steal back the powerful artifacts that the elite students stole, and also hoping to inform Knightcharm as to the Scholomance's survival so it can be destroyed once and for all.
* MundaneUtility: Emily’s ability to do this is one of the things that Lauren claims to like about her. For instance, in order to get into the club where Lauren is waiting without alerting the bouncers (who would refuse her entrance since she’s not old enough), Emily wants to go in through a window in the alley. The problem is, she can’t quite reach it even when climbing up as high as she can get and then jumping. She ultimately summons a shield from her amulet, positions it below herself, and then slams it upwards into herself just as she jumps. This knocks her a couple extra inches into the air, which is enough for her to reach the window.
* RedemptionQuest: Emily sees infiltrating and undermining the Scholomance as this. Her mission failure was so bad that Knightcharm won't even let her go into the field anymore, so her self-imposed mission to hurt the Scholomance is the only way she sees to make up for that failure.
* WhiteMage: Emily specializes in defensive magic like shield spells. One of her challenges is figuring out how to use the magic that she has in order to launch attacks instead of just hiding behind her barriers and hoping nobody breaks them.

[[folder:[=LaTasha=]]]
!![=LaTasha=] Abayo

A former contestant on the dance-themed RealityShow Princess of Dance, and now a rookie at the Scholomance. [=LaTasha=] seems surprised by the violent nature of her new school, and it's implied she may be regretting her decision to join up.

----
* DeliberateUnderperformance: [=LaTasha=] knows she could try to come in first in her heat during her final orientation run, but she'd have to fight off the other students who would be trying to hurt or kill her so they could win instead. She thus decides to go more slowly and let the other students in her heat fight it out for first place while she focuses on finishing at all.
* DirtyCoward: [[spoiler:[=LaTasha=] may have powerful magic, but she really does not like risking herself, especially in the one-on-one duels which are the Scholomance's main method of advancement. She eventually decides to help Alejandra and Brynne attack Emily and the rest of Emily's team in exchange for Alejandra agreeing to handle her duels from then on.]]
* DoWellButNotPerfect: [=LaTasha=] decides that she won't try to win her heat in the official orientation course race but will instead just try to finish it. Her rank will suffer for not coming in first, but she just wants to survive the course and would rather drop a few ranks if it means she doesn't have to slug it out with the frontrunners. (Emily notes that there are only thirty-two available slots in the class and forty-eight competitors, meaning that if enough students finish the slowest ones will be rejected anyways, but [=LaTasha=] checked on how previous classes did and is sure there won't be thirty-two survivors at all, which would mean that everyone who finishes would automatically live and makes it into the class.)
* FishOutOfWater: A former dancer on a reality show who finds herself stuck in an evil magic school.
* OnlySaneMan: Unlike the other rookies, she's appropriately surprised and horrified by the actions of the other students, including the elites setting a rule that class rank is largely set by brutal wizard duels, and Julia immediately challenging the top-ranked Morgan to one of those duels.
* PartialTransformation: She is able to do this. When Natalya attacks her during an orientation training session, she shifts one of her hands into a lion's claw and rakes it across Natalya's face.
* SixthRangerTraitor: [[spoiler:[=LaTasha=] is the last and most reluctant of Emily's allies, and she ultimately defects to Alejandra's side so that Alejandra will handle her battles for her.]]
* SlowAndSteadyWinsTheRace: [=LaTasha's=] strategy during the official orientation race. Unusually, she makes it clear that this isn't about conserving stamina; she just doesn't want to be a frontrunner because then her competitors will try to kill her so they can take the lead, and she'd rather avoid that.
* StoppedCaring: She makes it clear that she couldn't care less about the ranking system or in doing dangerous physical challenges just to demonstrate her skills. As far as she's concerned, the Scholomance is run by lunatics and she just wants to keep her head down and survive until graduation.
* ThisIsACompetition: [=LaTasha=] indicates this when Emily tries to talk to her right before they both practice the orientation course for the first time. She then makes it clear that she knows how dangerous everything is and she wants to focus solely on trying to finish the course alive, not on befriending Emily.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: She seems to be good with spells that let her do this. During her first attempt at the orientation course, her strategy is to turn into a large cheetah and use that body to run the course more easily.

!!Megumi Komatsu

A Japanese witch who doesn't seem very comfortable with the madness and evil of the Scholomance. She was handpicked by Rebecca.

----
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: During her duel with Emily, after Emily pins her, Megumi blasts the ground directly under herself to blast them apart and free herself from Emily's grasp even though she knows that attack will hurt her too.
* AnIcePerson: While Megumi's primary spells seem to be pure energy blasts, she also begins using ice spells after orientation in order to make herself more versatile.
* LovableRogue: She was a thief even before joining the Scholomance, and she wants to be a brutal vigilante, but all the victims we see or hear about are evil, she uses her thief skills to help Emily, and she's a very nice person if you don't get on her bad side.
* MageBornOfMuggles: She was born to two mundane parents who had no magic, and didn't even know magic was real until she tried to mug Rebecca and suddenly found herself in deep trouble.
* MasterOfUnlocking: Her thief skills enable her to get through most physical locks (although she needs some help from Emily when the locks are augmented with magic wards).
* PlayingPossum: She uses this tactic in fights, notably in her duel against Emily.
* Revenge: Her main motivation is getting bloody revenge on the Yakuza gangsters who harmed her family.
* TokenGoodTeammate: She appears to be less of a monster than the other Scholomance recruits, many of whom openly boast about their plans to do evil things like kill people or take over the world.
* UnderhandedHero: She's a skilled thief who agrees to help Emily survive the Scholomance.
* Vigilante Girl: Her goal for attending the Scholomance is to become strong enough to slaughter the Yakuza gangsters who enslaved and abused her family.

!!Rosa Montaldo

An athletic Scholomance rookie from Spain. Emily quickly realizes there's something off about her. She was handpicked by Ceranna.

----
* CaptainObvious: While competing together in the orientation obstacle course, Rosa reminds Emily that it's a bad idea to stop in the middle. Given that the whole competition is a race and that the course itself is full of lethal dangers, it's safe to say Emily already knew that.
* CloudCuckoolander: Her reactions to things are weirdly mechanical, like she knows how she's expected to act but doesn't fully grasp why. For instance, when talking with the other rookies about how two people just got killed, Rosa says she feels bad -- and then immediately shifts to excitedly talking about the big DeadlyGame they're about to play and how she's excited to meet [=LaTasha=], whom she recognizes from television.
* CompetitionFreak: She loves competing, even in the Scholomance's lethal challenges, and she's honestly puzzled when others like [=LaTasha=] don't share her enthusiasm and prioritize their safety over testing themselves against her.
* DissonantSerenity: She acts sad about Julia and Minjin dying for a few seconds, then immediately gets excited about how they'll all get to run in a really challenging DeathCourse.
* FitnessNut: When all the Scholomance rookies are meeting (and mostly threatening) each other for the first time, Rosa takes the chance to do a set of push-ups.
* FriendlyEnemy: Rosa is quite polite to Emily while competing against her, even saying 'please' before asking her to get out of the way so Rosa can pass her in a race. However, this becomes creepy given Rosa's bizarrely nonchalant reactions to the horrors of the Scholomance; for instance, Rosa attempts to make Emily feel better by describing how another rookie got set on fire in the middle of the course and then telling Emily that she's better than that and thus should be happy.
* ImposedHandicapTraining: Emily sees Rosa training with weights strapped to her legs.
* LackOfEmpathy: Seems to understand that she's supposed to feel bad about Julia, Minjin, and her training partner Janet Ghebremariam dying, but her reactions indicate that she either wasn't really bothered by their deaths or is pretending to be a sociopath for some reason.

header:The twins

Two Puerto Rican witches who happen to be twins and share an affinity for necromancy. They were handpicked by Morgan, the Scholomance's top student.

----
* CameBackWrong: They reference this when discussing how they used their magic to deal with an escaped tiger.
--->Julia: When I was eight, I used my necromancy to kill a tiger.\
Alejandra: And I brought it back. [Beat] Mostly.
* Necromancer: They brag about their proficiency in this.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Both are badly scarred in nearly identical ways (though Alejandra's are slightly smaller). They're also both evil necromancers who boast that they can rot away their enemies.
* MageBornOfMuggles: They are both this, which gets them into conflict with the clique, who believe that mages with non-magical ancestry are inferior to those with extensive magical lineage.
* SlobsVersusSnobs: As former orphans in the slums of San Juan, they act as the 'slobs' in their rivalry with Lily, a rich girl who claims to be descended from Myth/Merlin.

!!Alejandra Medina

One of the necromancer twins. When they arrive at the Scholomance, she acts more restrained and calmer than her sister. After Julia's death, though, she becomes even angrier and more of a hothead than Julia ever was.

----
* BerserkButton: She has one in the form of Julia's death. If it's brought up, particularly by someone weaker than Julia (and thus someone whom Alejandra thinks should have died instead of her), Alejandra flips out.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: She was evil even before joining the Scholomance, and after arriving she quickly degenerated into an unhinged and rage-filled monster, but she truly loved her sister.
* HairTriggerTemper: It takes very little to set her off after Julia's death.
* Please Spare Her My Liege: After Morgan gets Julia on the ropes during their fight, Alejandra sees how much trouble Julia is in and begs for Morgan to spare her or for Ceranna to stop the duel. Neither does, and Julia dies.
* RedOniBlueOni: Alejandra acts as the blue oni to Julia's red oni, since Alejandra is calmer and less quick to anger. At least, that's the case up to the point where Julia is murdered by Morgan. After that, they reverse, since Alejandra is perpetually enraged (and thus the red oni) while Julia is dead and therefore immobile (making her more like the blue oni).
* Revenge: She wants vengeance on Morgan for killing her sister. Ironically, this leads her to training under Morgan and following her lessons, since otherwise Morgan won't give her a chance at revenge.
* YouShouldHaveDiedInstead: Her reaction to Emily's efforts to show sympathy over Julia's murder is to brutally attack the other girl. Alejandra makes it very clear that she's fine with Myth/TheScholomance killing 'weak' students and even believes that other students like Emily 'should have' been killed in place of her sister, who was a stronger witch than them.

!!Julia Medina

One of the necromancer twins. When they arrive at the Scholomance, she acts more aggressive and hot-tempered than her sister.

----
* BullyBrutality: She tried to cruelly curse Yawkly for no other reason than the other girl being weak.
* RedOniBlueOni: Julia initially acts as the red oni to Alejandra's blue oni, since Julia is angrier and more brash than her sister. Alejandra only becomes the red oni after Julia is killed.
* TooDumbToLive: One of her first moves upon arriving at the Scholomance and learning that they have magic duels is to challenge the strongest student to a deathmatch for dominance. It doesn't end well for her.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Despite her talents, she's the very first member of Emily's class to die, being brutally killed by Morgan after challenging her for leadership of the Scholomance.

header:The clique

A clique of powerful warlogas who band together and bully the other students.

----
* TheBully: They all act as this, treating the other witches with immense cruelty.
* BullyAndWimpPairing: Brynne acts as the wimp and is generally pushed around by Lily and the others even as she sucks up to them.
* BullyBrutality: They're all cruel bullies who go out of their way to gratuitously hurt the other students. Examples include Amira using her water magic to try suffocating Emily, Natalya trying to poison [=LaTasha=] with her magic scorpions, and Lily
* CoDragons: Lucille and Amira serve as this to Lily. The two of them proved themselves to be the strongest witches in the clique short of Lily herself, having been the only other two to complete the orientation obstacle course on their first try, and when Lily had the chance to pick two people to help her kill Emily, she chose them over the rest of her clique.
* CustomUniform: Except for Brynne, they all add flags to their uniforms which showcase their respective heritages.
* EqualOpportunityEvil: Invoked. They agree with their ancestors that some people were born to rule and others born to serve, but unlike their ancestors (which are Confederate plantation owners for Lucille, Barbary pirates for Amira, Genghis Khan's forces for Natalya, etc.), they don't think that race or tribe should have anything to do with it. They instead think that magical ability should determine whether someone is a ruler or a slave; since all members of the clique have magical skill, they get along fine.
* FantasticRacism: The clique is contemptuous of people who can't use magic (or who can but aren't very good at it).
* GangOfBullies: They are a gang of powerful witches who bully other Scholomance rookies.
* GirlPosse: They form one of these, generally operating as a pack and teaming up to torment the other witches.
* SlobsVersusSnobs: The wealthy clique members act as the 'snobs' in their rivalry with the Medina twins.
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: Most of them wear tailored uniforms with flags representing their various heritages. For instance, Lily's uniform has a flag which represents Merlin, Lucille's includes the Confederate battle flag, Amira's incorporates the flag of the Barbary pirates, etc. The exception is Brynne, who the others claim doesn't have any heritage worth knowing about.

!!Lily Rutherford

A British witch who claims to be descended from Myth/Merlin himself.

----
* AlphaBitch: She's clearly a jerk and a bully, and she has a GirlPosse of multiple other student witches hanging off her every word.
* AmbiguousSituation: It's not specified if Emily at the conclusion of their last fight.
* ArcVillain: The main enemy during the orientation arc. She's introduced at its start and, along with her clique, immediately picks fights with Emily. She remains a thorn in Emily's side through the arc until they have their final fight during Emily's last orientation run and Lily is finally defeated.
* CheatersNeverProsper: She tries to cheat in orientation in multiple ways, including by using a magical battery provided by an older student to charge her spells and by having Brynne use her seer powers to look ahead in the course and then tell her where the death traps were through a magical crystal. She still was defeated and (possibly) killed by Emily.
* DickDastardlyStopsToCheat: She was about to complete the orientation course and win her heat when Yawkly appeared behind her. Even though Yawkly was much too far away to catch up, Lily turned and attacked her, almost killing the other girl. This not only stalled Lily but also enraged Emily enough to finally catch up to Lily, after which Emily crushed the other girl in battle.
* FamousAncestor: As a putative descendant of Myth/Merlin, she believes that she is naturally an incredibly talented witch.
* KickTheDog:
** After Emily defeats and traps Luban in the first part of the final orientation run, Lily arrives and coldly executes her. Even though Luban was evil, she was no longer a threat and had proven to be unable to hurt Lily even while fighting at full strength, so Lily had no legitimate reason to kill her. But she did anyways, and why? Because Luban had dared to challenge her at all, and that offended Lily so much she decided that the appropriate solution was murder.
** Lily also stopped to try and kill Yawkly even though Yawkly was a pacifist whom Lily knew would never try to hurt her, and also even though Yawkly was too far behind to have any hope of catching up.
* TakeOverTheWorld: She explicitly says she wants to use her magic to rule the world.
* VillainousPrincess: She's already decided that, when she conquers the world, she'll force everyone to call her 'princess.'
* WakeUpCallBoss: She serves as this to Emily, being one of her first major enemies in the Scholomance. Emily, who had previously been something of a dilettante, is forced to develop both her magical skills and her character in order to have a chance of defeating Lily in battle.

!!Lucille "Lucy" Ballard

A witch from Mississippi who is part of Lily's gang.

----
* DeepSouth: She's from deep Mississippi and has an accent to match.
* TrashTalk: She slows down during an orientation practice run to taunt Megumi, which ends up allowing Megumi to recover and attack her.
* VoodooDoll: She fights with these, strangling one with a piece of Megumi's hair and thus causing Megumi to choke and collapse.

!!Amira Chadid

A Moroccan witch who serves as a member of Lily's clique.

----
* BarbarousBarbaryBandits: She is descended from a Barbary pirate weather witch, and she acts in a barbarous manner, abusing and even attacking other students just because she thinks she's stronger than them.
* ElementalBaggage: Averted; she has to carry water with her to use it.
* HandSeals: She uses these to control water when she's casting spells.
* MakingASplash: She has a knack for water magic, and she carries around canteens full of water so she can use it in battle.

!!Natalya Monkhbat

A witch of Russian and Mongolian origin who is part of Lily's clique.

----
* ScaryScorpion: She can summon poisonous scorpions with her magic.
* TwoferTokenMinority: Natalya is both Russian and Mongolian.
* UglySlavicWomen: Natalya is described as 'broad-shouldered' and 'bulky,' and she is also of Russian descent.

!!Claudette Cadieux

A French witch who is also in Lily's clique, but who doesn't seem as powerful as most of its other members.

----
* BulletProofFashionPlate: Only rookies who complete the orientation course are allowed to get new outfits, and everyone's luggage was confiscated upon arrival, meaning the rest are stuck in the increasingly-tattered outfits they were wearing when they arrived. Despite this, however, Claudette manages to look impeccable even after a few days of trying and failing to pass the course. It's revealed this is because she is skilled at cosmetics and beauty magic.
* Everyone Looks Prettier If French: Claudette, the French rookie, is revealed to be talented at beauty magic and is able to keep herself looking impeccable despite the grim conditions of the Scholomance.
* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: She's especially good at cosmetics magic, but that's not much use at the battle-focused Scholomance. It's indicated that this is one reason why she lags behind the other members of the clique, most of whom completed the orientation course before her.

!!Brynne

An Irish witch who is obsequious towards Lily.

----
* BlindSeer: Brynne has very bad eyesight and requires thick glasses to see. She also specializes in seer magic and can see into the future, a skill which she uses to help the clique cheat in orientation.
* BlindWithoutEm: It's mentioned that Brynne broke her glasses on her first try of the orientation course, and because of the Scholomance's rule that students who fail tests aren't allocated any supplies, she can't get new ones for a while and is functionally blind during that time.
* CombatClairvoyance: Brynne can look a few seconds into the future to see where attacks or traps will land. She can also use this ability to help her friends by looking into their futures and then telling them when and how to dodge.
* EvilChancellor: Not only does she wind up as this to both the clique and , but it turns out her entire family history is full of people doing this. After one particular ancestor ruled Ireland like a tyrant and was then overthrown, his descendants realized that they could live equally luxurious lives without the risk of being dragged out and killed by a mob if they simply acted as background advisors to local tyrants instead of becoming the tyrants themselves.
* EvilRedhead: She's part of Lily's gang and even seems to act as their lookout, warning them when someone is coming so they know when they can and can't get away with bullying the other students. She's also a redhead.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: She wears glasses and she's part of Lily's cruel gang of bullies, helping them abuse victims by keeping a lookout for authorities who might intervene.
* MeaningfulName: Brynne's last name is finally revealed after the orientation arc, and it turns out to be [[spoiler:ni Abhartach, which in Irish naming conventions translates to 'daughter of Abhartach.' Since it was noted earlier that Dracula was a student at the Scholomance, and since Abhartach is a figure from Irish mythology said to have inspired the Dracula myth, this is probably not a coincidence.]]
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: She eventually gets fed up with taking the clique's abuse and spoiler:defects to Alejandra's side, helping the necromancer slaughter the clique's remnants. Emily also intuits that Brynne would do this to Alejandra too if she found someone even better to serve, though that's rendered moot during the final battle.
* ProfessionalButtKisser: Brynne talks up Lily and compliments her constantly.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: She runs away screaming just before Janet G.
* Seers: Brynne can look into the future, as Emily realizes after thinking back to how Brynne always seemed to know when trouble was brewing before it actually happened.
* WaifProphet: Brynne is depicted as the weakest and most physically frail member of the clique, and she's also its seer.

header:Tier 1

For Rosa and [=LaTasha=], see their entries under the 'Emily and her allies' header.

For Alejandra, see her entry under the 'twins' header.

The four students in the rookie class with the highest rank are designated as being in Tier 1. Following the Darwinian nature of the school, their rank entitles them to the best of everything, from medical care to spa treatments.

----

* GildedCage: Tier 1 students are given incredible luxuries. It's mentioned that Chosovi chose an expensive gaming rig and [=LaTasha=] set up a top tier sound system so she can dance. Of course, as nice as the accomodations are, the students are still stuck in the Scholomance just like the lower ranked students, and there's no indication they'll be treated less harshly than the others if they try to escape.

!!Bahar Aktas

A Scholomance rookie from Turkey who is very skilled at brewing potions, and who frequently sells her excess to other students. After several deaths and demotions of students above her, she finally advances to Tier 1.
----
* BadassBandolier: Bahar wears twin bandoliers which are loaded with small flasks full of various potions. Given the prices her potions command in the school's black market, it's clear that she's got some very powerful magic loaded into the bandoliers' flasks.
* DungeonShop: She essentially operates one of these, brewing powerful potions and then selling them in exchange for passes and magical equipment.
* FriendInTheBlackMarket: The only legitimate source of supplies in the Scholomance is the school store, but most students aren't allowed in (or are restricted from getting the really good stuff) because their class rank is too low. Bahar runs a technically-illegal shop where she sells the potions that she brews to her desperate classmates. She's able to charge extortionate prices, but her customers has no other options, so they're forced to pay.
* HumanHardDrive: She can brew potions which drastically enhance her memory, allowing her to recall things she otherwise could never remember. Naturally, she uses these potions to do better on tests.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: In the final orientation run she just pays the three other witches in her heat to attack each other. This works well enough that two of those witches are killed, but Ceranna thinks this is a disreputable and denies her credit for the kills.
* MagicPotion: She carries entire bandoliers of these.
* NoHeroDiscount: Bahar refuses to give Emily a price break on her wares, even though she knows Emily has a record of opposing the especially evil students in their class.
* PurpleIsPowerful: She seems to already be a skilled witch even before starting her studies at the Scholomance, judging by the completed potions she carries around with her. She's also strongly associated with the color purple; both her eyes and her headscarf are that color.

!!Chosovi Naha

A Hopi witch with a mohawk and a set of knives.

----
* BladeEnthusiast: She favors twin daggers and is never seen without them.
* ChallengeSeeker: She claims that she joined the Scholomance because she'd already beaten all the video games and won all the extreme sports she could find and wanted a new challenge. She also acts like this in the Scholomance, challenging teachers to give her the hardest assignments they can muster.
* CombatSadomasochist: During the duel between Julia and Morgan, the rookies are given enchanted stones which allow them to feel what the contestants feel. Most of the rookies drop the stones as soon as Julia begins taking horrific and painful damage. Chosovi, however, just keeps holding hers and looks absolutely delighted in the process.
* GodlikeGamer: Chosovi claims to be this and even brags she was able to win online games despite playing while living on a rural Indian reservation with poor Internet connection speeds.
* ImpliedDeathThreat: Chosovi says that she beat tons of people in games and 'even let some of them live,' implying to Emily that she often doesn't allow the people who lose against her to live. Since Emily knows she may have to compete against Chosovi in a lethal obstacle course, she knows to take this as a real threat.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Judging by what she says, she just wants to have lots of fun by playing dangerous and potentially lethal games (like magic duels), and she doesn't care who she has to hurt or kill to have that fun.
* MaliciousMisnaming: After Lauren has everyone start calling Janet Yawkly by her last name, Chosovi goes one step further and bullies her by calling her 'Yawk.'
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: Upon learning that the fifty remaining rookies will have to race each other in a DeadlyGame to qualify for actual spots in the Scholomance, Chosovi asks if she's allowed to just murder her competitors to ensure that she wins her race. This being the Scholomance, the answer is 'yes.'
* PsychoKnifeNut: She casually sharpens her knives while waiting for the elites to show up, and she threatens to stab another rookie who annoys her.
* TheQuincyPunk: She embodies this style, with ripped clothes and a dyed mohawk. Her sadistic and bloodthirsty personality also matches the more nihilistic versions of this trope.
* Sadist: Chosovi seems to take glee in watching Julia be brutally killed, and she deliberately reminds Gelila that she (Chosovi) stabbed Gelila's goat just to make the other girl suffer.
* ThrillSeeker: Chosovi claims that this is her motive; she's beaten all the videogames and won all the extreme sports, so in order to find even more thrilling challenges, she came to the Scholomance to take part in the duels.
* TrashTalk: After stabbing Gelila's goat, Chosovi mocks her about this later.

!!Starlyght Mornyngmyst

A rookie with an interest in pagan and indigenous spirituality. She starts out in Tier 2, but Rosa's collapse opens up a slot in Tier 1 which Starlyght is able to grab.

----
* AchievementsInIgnorance: Despite seeming like an idiot, she's one of only ten students (out of fifty) to complete the orientation course on her first try. She then compounds this by killing two competitors during her final run. Later on, she's even able to get into Tier 1.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Starlyght is a thoroughly ridiculous person who showcases her ignorance almost whenever she speaks and is held in disdain by others. But she's also extremely powerful, to the point where she kills two other students during her final orientation run. Her kills were so impressive and showed so much magical ability that she's given a class rank of 5 out of 32 even though her orientation time itself wasn't that great (both because she's not athletic and also because she stopped in the middle of the deadly obstacle course to meditate). Later, she reaches Tier 1, the pinnacle of success at the Scholomance.
* DissonantSerenity: She's quite cheery even after Julia and Minjin are killed.
* ForeignCultureFetish: She approaches Chosovi (who is Hopi) and goes on about how she's so excited to talk to a member of a 'spiritual' people. She also wears a dreamcatcher around her neck.
* GranolaGirl: She talks a lot about being enlightened and trying to learn from indigenous people.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: She claims to be deeply interested in traditional spiritual practices and indigenous cultures, even to the point of claiming that Gaia is with her and will help her do well in orientation, yet she clearly knows very little. For instance, she wears a dreamcatcher around her neck, which isn't how those are used.
* LackOfEmpathy: Despite her ostensibly enlightened and empathetic views, she shows virtually no reaction to Julia's and Minjin's murders.
* LotusPosition: Starlyght meditates in this position. However, since we first see her do this while she's preparing for a lethal obstacle course in which she and the other contestants have been encouraged to kill each other, the effect is more unnerving than peaceful.
* MagicStaff: She acquires one after orientation and uses it to cast her spells.
* SummonMagic: Claudette, the only other survivor of Starlyght's heat in the final orientation run, babbles that Starlyght summoned some kind of monsters. It's heavily implied those monsters helped her kill the rest of the heat.
* UnfortunateName: As soon as she spells out her name (which includes three superfluous "y"s), Lauren mocks her and wonders if her parents hated her.
* XtremeKoolLetterz: Her name has a bunch of superfluous "y"s.

!!Gelila Wongel

An Ethiopian witch who brings a goat with her to the Scholomance.

----
* AffablyEvil: She politely tells Emily that she doesn't mind the girl and would rather not fight. Then she says that, should Emily stand in her way, she will nonetheless kill Emily without a second thought.
* BadassBookworm: Gelila is one of the more book-focused rookie witches and even takes books with her to the gym. She's also clearly one of the stronger students in the class; Emily notices that even though Gelila didn't seem to get any spare changes of clothing, her outfit is still immaculate, indicating that she's able to get through most of the orientation course's traps without taking damage. (By contrast, Emily herself frequently gets wrecked in the course, resulting in serious harm to her clothes as well as herself.)
* EmotionlessGirl: Though she's willing to get into conflicts with the other students, she rarely shows emotion and usually speaks in a flat and toneless voice.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: She may have no respect for human life whatsoever, but she cares deeply for her goat familiar Akko.
* Familiar: She has a goat named Akko as a familiar.
* FamousAncestor: She claims to be descended from Seble Wongel, who was an Empress of Ethiopia.
* FightingForAHomeland: Gelila is Ethiopian, but she doesn't seem to think that the current nation of Ethiopia qualifies as her home. She wants to rebuild the complete Ethiopian Empire (which includes modern-day Eritrea) and rule it as a homeland just like her ancestor Seble Wongel did.
* GruesomeGoat: Gelila is an evil student whose goals include overthrowing multiple governments to rebuild an empire and who is explicitly willing to kill whoever she needs to in order to get that done. She's also never seen without her goat familiar.
* RightfulKingReturns: Gelila's goal is to rebuild the Ethiopian Empire and ascend its throne, taking back the seat which her ancestor Seble Wongel once held.
* TwoferTokenMinority: Based on her claims of being descended from Seble Wongel, Gelila is both black and Jewish. She also wears thick glasses, indicating she may have a vision disability.
* TheUnfettered: Gelila claims to believe in this, saying she will do absolutely anything to fulfill her goal of rebuilding the Ethiopian Empire. She goes so far as to tell Emily that she is confident Emily will determine Gelila's methods are unacceptable and try to stop her. She also says that, should Emily indeed pick a fight, she will kill Emily without a qualm.
* WeakButSkilled: Gelila reads a lot and has a vast quantity of theoretical knowledge, but perhaps as a result of spreading herself to thin, she's rather underpowered as a caster. This is shown the first time we see her in class when she produces a ward which is perfect on a theoretical level but is so underpowered that it can barely damage a small toy.

!!Maura Dettweiler

A Scholomance rookie with a guitar on her back and a falcon on her arm.
----
* Familiar: She has a huge falcon named Zugel for a familiar.
* MagicMusic: She carries a guitar with her and has indicated that she uses it to cast her spells.
* UnskilledButStrong: Maura seems to have a lot of power but not much knowledge as to how to use it. This is shown during the first class sequence, where Maura packs tons of energy into a ward but sets the spell up so poorly that it blows apart under its own strain.

!!Tereza Maly

----

* BullyMagnet: Unsurprisingly, the various evil students of the Scholomance target the Tier 6 rookies, who are presumptively incapable of fighting back on account of their weakness.
* IneptMage: The Tier 6 rookies are generally this, since they only got into the tier in the first place becasue they're so far behind their classmates.

!!Caline Smith

A witch from Quebec, Canada. She has a huge chip on her shoulder.

----
* InsistentTerminology: She's technically Canadian but gets mad if anyone calls her that. She prefers people to think of her as 'Quebecois.'
* SingleIssueWonk: Caline's chief passion is for the cause of Quebec separatism, and she even says she joined the Scholomance to gain enough power that she could make it a reality.
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: Caline wears a Quebec flag as a do-rag to underscore her hardline devotion to the cause of Quebec independence.

!!Elea Korhonen

A Finnish witch who witnesses a few of the Scholomance's horrors and proves to be incapable of withstanding the accompanying psychological strain.

----
* TheGhost: She's never seen in person.
* HappyPlace: Emily notes that Elea, who couldn't handle seeing the horrors of her school, retreated to some kind of mental refuge and barely seemed to know what was going on in front of her.
* KilledOffscreen: Chosovi mentions killing her in a duel that Emily didn't see.

!!Elzbieta Zawadska

A Polish witch who tries to take the easy way out of tough challenges.

----
* CheatersNeverProsper:
** She tries to get the older students to bend the rules and let her skip orientation. They curse her so badly people can hear her agonized groans for days.
** She continues to try to cheat rather than just do her assignments properly, with the result being she's unprepared for the final orientation run. Though she does complete the course, she is ranked in Tier 6, where the students assessed to be the weakest are put.
** And in the end, [[spoiler:it's revealed that she got Chosovi to handle her duels in exchange for crafting Chosovi gear. This actually worked for a while, but blew up after Elzbieta discovered that Chosovi was some kind of government agent and Chosovi realized Elzbieta knew. It's heavily implied Chosovi tried to kill her, an effort made all the easier because Elzbieta hadn't done any of her own fights and thus had no experience with magic duels.]]
* RewardedAsATraitorDeserves: [[spoiler:Despite having the chance to escape, she chose to stay and continue helping Chosovi murder her classmates just so she could have an easy life. 419

!!Janet Yawkly

An albino witch who arrives at the Scholomance dressed in very plain clothes. Her accent and outfit make Emily think she is Amish, which she later confirms. She seems terrified of the Scholomance and opposed to its violent methods, raising the question of why she's there.

----
* ActualPacifist: She is a devout Anabaptist who abhors all violence.
* AsTheGoodBookSays: Soon after arriving at the Scholomance, Emily overhears reciting Psalm 23 (the one mentioning the 'valley of the shadow of death.')
* DebtDetester: Yawkly clearly hates that she owes Emily a debt for saving her life and hasn't paid it back.
* DirtyCoward: Played with. She never stands up for herself and endures all kinds of humiliations without complaint, but she does stand up for others, even monsters like Julia Medina.
* DoNotCallMePaul: For reasons unknown, she really dislikes being called by her last name. Unfortunately, Lauren insists that everyone do it anyways and Yawkly isn't capable of fighting her, so she has to go along with it.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: She goes through Hell, but she never gives in to the Scholomance's corruption and uses her powers for evil, no matter how many punishment she's subjected to. And in the end
* ExtremeDoormat: She is terrified of the other students and quickly offers to placate them whenever it seems like she might be bothering them. She doesn't like having to go by her last name but goes along with it for fear of triggering Lauren's wrath. Emily has to reassure her that she wasn't annoyed by Yawkly quietly praying near her.
* HonorBeforeReason: Despite being in dire straits, Yawkly tries to give Emily the one powerful crafted item she's managed to obtain because she believes she owes Emily a huge debt for saving her life during orientation. Fortunately for her, Emily declines.
* Intangibility: She is able to turn herself into an intangible entity by using classic magic implements such as chalk and a bell.
* OneSteveLimit: Made into a plot point. Lauren compels Yawkly to go by her last name, even though Yawkly doesn't like doing that, in a supposed effort to make sure nobody mixes her up with the other Janet. Since the other Janet looks absolutely nothing like her, Emily thinks Lauren is just bullying Yawkly for some reason. Lauren then continues forcing Yawkly to go by her surname even after the other Janet is killed.
* OrphansOrdeal: Yawkly claims not to have any family anymore, and it's implied that this is one of the reasons that she wound up stuck in the Scholomance.
* Please Spare Her My Liege: Like Alejandra, Yawkly begs the elites not to kill Julia. Her pleas have no more effect than the other girl's.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Even more than Megumi. Yawkly doesn't seem to want to commit violence at all.
* UnspecifiedApocalypse: When Janet mentions her community, she talks of them strictly in the past tense and gives the impression that simply returning to them is not an option. However, it hasn't yet been specified what precisely happened to them.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Unlike most of the other witches who have magic that's quick to use, Yawkly has to chalk a ritual circle around her and then ring a bell in order to cast her spells. This makes her much slower off the draw than the other witches.

!!Lima Chavez

A Scholomance rookie from Peru.

----
* CategoryTraitor: Her family were part of Peru's military junta and they sent her to the Scholomance to gain power so she can help overthrow the country's democratic government and reinstate a military dictatorship. But despite her family's longstanding allegiance to the military, Lima just wants to help people and has no interest in undermining democracy.
* Determinator:
** During the Julia-Morgan WizardDuel where the rookies are given rocks that let them feel whatever the combatants feel, most of the rookies drop the rocks after starts taking excruciating blows. Lima, however, grimly hangs on even as the pain becomes immense.
** Lima also becomes very sick just before orientation, but she's able to push through and finish the course quickly enough to pass regardless.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: While Emily focuses on her own problems, Lima works to keep the other Tier 6 students alive, even shepherding Elea through the orientation course after Gelila killed the fourth person in their heat. Unfortunately, given the nature of the Scholomance, helping the Tier 6 students survive is easier said than done.

!!Carlita Xique

Another rookie. She had trouble with the orientation course.

----
* ButtMonkey: She got set on fire during a run through the orientation course and had to give up on that run. Then she got herself obliterated trying to break into the Vault.
* Calacas: She wears a mask to look like one of these. It's implied this may relate to how she casts her magic.
* HumanSacrifice: It's mentioned that Carlita knows a lot of magic involving this, though Carlita herself is killed before she gets to show her knowledge off.
* KilledOffscreen: Rebecca reports that she died trying to break into the Vault.
* Mayincatec: Lily says that Carlita is descended from a priestess of Huitzilopochtli (an Aztec god), and that she's an expert when it comes to ritual magic for human sacrifice.

!!Janet Ghebremariam

A muscular Scholomance rookie from Nigeria who was handpicked by Ceranna.

----
* AfroAsskicker: Janet is a tall and muscular girl with a huge afro, and even though she didn't get first place on the (challenging and potentially lethal) orientation course during her first run, she at least completed it, which eighty percent of the student witches couldn't do.
* EscapeFromTheCrazyPlace: Janet eventually tries to do this, but she fails and dies in the process.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted. The rookie class has another Janet, though that Janet is made to go by her last name to avoid confusion.
* YourHeadAsplode:

!!Luban Chan

A Chinese Scholomance rookie.

----
* EvilCripple: Luban walks with a limp because one of her legs is a few inches longer than the other. She's also a monstrously cruel person who tries to kill Emily for seemingly no other reason than that Emily is competing against her.
* FlyingOnACloud: She knows magic to do this, and she spends most of her orientation run safely perched on the cloud while her competitors try to evade both her and the obstacles worked into the course floor.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: She has a pockmarked face, and she's evil to the core.
* LaughingMad: She spends most of the final orientation run cackling and laughing as she tries to kill Emily.
* ShockAndAwe: She can shoot bolts of lightning from her magic cloud, and she happily does so during orientation.
* SlowAndSteadyWinsTheRace: Her strategy during orientation is to get to the front of her pack and then slow down a bit so she can concentrate on killing everyone trying to catch up to her. If they all die, then she can take the course as slowly as she wants and still pass.

!!Minjin Choi

A Scholomance rookie who cracks under the pressure and tries to flee, but doesn't get far.

----
* EscapeFromTheCrazyPlace: She tries to do this after Morgan slays Julia, but she fails and dies in the process.
* KilledOffscreen: Her death to the monsters outside the Scholomance isn't shown, but is relayed by Sica.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: After Julia is killed in a brutal and painful manner, Minjin panics and runs for the front door. Sica reports her death a few moments later.

!The Scholomance: Older Students

header:The elites

The top four students at the Scholomance.
----
* AbsurdlyPowerfulStudentCouncil: The elites decide which students are given which class rank, and that rank in turn determines everything from the quality of food and equipment the students get to which missions they're assigned. As such, even though the elites are just students, they still control almost every aspect of the other students' lives and can make their lives at the Scholomance easier... or much, much harder. (And shorter).
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: The elites supposedly got their ranks by being the four toughest fighters in the Scholomance.
* EvilMentor: They seem to act as this, both to the student body as a whole (since they have a lot of say in running the school and influence everyone's educations) and towards their handpicked students, whom most of them give special attention, in particular.
* MightMakesRight: Their justification for being on top and controlling the other students is just that they're the strongest, so they get to be in charge.

!!Lauren Taverron

One of the four Scholomance elites who attack Emily's team in the beginning of the book. Despite having the lowest rank of the four of them, she's the one who personally defeats Emily in combat. She claims to be impressed by Emily's fighting spirit and cleverness, and offers her the chance to join the Scholomance in order to get stronger and no longer be useless. Her true motives, however, remain a mystery.

----
* CombatPragmatist: Lauren seems to support people being this. When Emily asks why the Scholomance doesn’t even lock the front door (since anyone who tries to use it will just get instantly killed by the monster outside), Lauren cheerfully responds that she sees the front door as a convenient way for weaker students to get rid of stronger ones who are targeting them: if the weaker student can lure the stronger one outside somehow, the monster will eat the stronger one and the weaker one will be victorious!
* TheHedonist: Lauren insists on ordering what she claims are spectacular craft beers and appetizers when she speaks to Emily in the club, though since it’s Lauren, it’s likely that she was just setting up the waitress to be brainwashed (to prevent her from demanding their [=IDs=], since they’re both teenagers) to see how Emily would react.
* JediMindTrick: She knows a spell for these. For instance, after Emily meets her in Club Bacchus-Dionysus, Lauren orders craft beers and a waitress tries to card both girls. Lauren’s response is to flick her wand and cast a spell to brainwash the waitress into just getting the beers.
* MagicWand: Lauren has multiple of these. She uses them to devastating effect and seems able to do everything from brainwashing people to blasting Emily unconscious with a single shot.
* MaliciousMisnaming: She insists on calling Janet Yawkly by her last name (and makes everyone else do this too) even though Yawkly hates it. She has no non-specious justification for this (at first just claiming that she doesn't want to mix Yawkly up with the class's other Janet who looks nothing like her, then changing course when the other Janet dies and saying that the name 'Janet' should now be retired in memory of the dead girl and that Yawkly should therefore keep going by her last name), so it appears she's doing this just to be malicious.
* MundaneUtility: Lauren doesn’t just use her magic to curse her enemies. She also knows how to brainwash waiters into not carding her when she orders alcoholic beverages.
* TheNicknamer: Lauren keeps calling Emily ‘kid.’ Emily eventually protests, noting that she’s fifteen and is only a few years younger than Lauren, but Lauren says that Emily is so far behind in terms of developing her magical power that she thinks it’s apropos.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: In contrast to Rebecca, who helps Megumi by giving her magical items, Lauren refuses to aid Emily in that way and instead 'trains' her by putting her in dangerous situations so that she'll become stronger by fighting her way out of them.
* TricksterMentor: Lauren rarely tells Emily what she wants the other girl to learn, instead dropping hints and letting her figure things out for herself.
* UnscrupulousHero: Given her hostility towards the more outwardly-evil students like Morgan, Lauren gives off shades of this. While her ultimate motives aren't clear, she does at least seem to want to reduce the death rate of the Scholomance's students.
* VetinariJobSecurity: Lauren argues that she essentially has this, telling the other elites that they need her because she's the only one who picked two students that survived orientation and didn't fall to the back of the class. As such, she's the only one of them with any credibility, and they need her to vouch for them to the 'Board' so they aren't punished for their failings.

!!Morgan Wolf

The top-ranked student at the Scholomance, and the leader of its elite team.
----
* CastingAShadow: Her magic spells seem to all revolve around using darkness and shadow to devastating effect.
* TheFaceless: Her face is always masked by shadow.
* GroomingTheEnemy: Morgan seems to be treating Alejandra this way, first murdering Alejandra's sister Julia and then forcing Alejandra through brutal training sessions with the promise of allowing Alejandra a chance at vengeance against her, Morgan, if Alejandra completes all the training and passes all the tests. Alejandra isn't yet strong enough to force the issue and has no choice but to agree, so Morgan is able to train her.

!!Ceranna Babineaux

The second-ranked student at the Scholomance, and a member of its elite team.

----
* BlackBossLady: Played with. Ceranna is a black girl and is also the Scholomance's second ranked student, but because Morgan is very hands off and seems to spend most of her time training Alejandra or out on missions, Ceranna winds up in charge of many of the Scholomance's day-to-day operations.
* Jerkass: She is noticeably more contemptuous of the rookies than the other elites. She's also cruel to her handpicked students Janet G. and Rosa, threatening them with horrible punishments whenever they don't surpass everyone else even though they're near the top of the class.
* MagicKnight: She specializes in melee combat, and even has an enchanted sword which is capable of sundering Emily’s shields.
* NumberTwo: She is the second ranked student, and thus is Morgan's number two.
* SecondPlaceIsForLosers: She clearly believes this, being furious that her handpicked students finished third and eighth respectively (out of fifty, with forty failing to finish at all) during the first run of the orientation course.

!!Rebecca Asher

The third-ranked student at the Scholomance, and a member of its elite team.

----
* AmbiguouslyJewish: In an unusual example, Rebecca herself believes that she is still a devout member of the Jewish faith -- she keeps kosher, follows other Jewish traditions, and seems to be operating out of some kind of tikkun olam philosophy -- but her rabbi explicitly told her that her vigilantism and willingness to take bloody vengeance against 'bad' people like animal abusers is not compatible with Judaism, and he even banned her from his synagogue when she refused to renounce her ways. (And that isn't even getting into her willness to use dark magic to stop 'bad' people that would otherwise be too strong to fight, which her rabbi didn't know about). And though Rebecca is one of the nicest people in the Schololmance, she is very sensitive about this and becomes angry when Emily inadvertently implies that her rabbi was right. Whether or not Rebecca still counts as Jewish in the religious sense has thus been left ambiguous in the story.
* BadassIsraeli: She is an Israeli witch who became the third most powerful student in the Scholomance. This is even more impressive seeing as how she was one of the very few students who started in the back of the class -- where she was given crappy equipment that barely worked and terrible food which, because it wasn't kosher, she wasn't able to eat -- and managed to get stronger and rise in rank instead of just staying in the back forever and eventually getting killed by someone stronger.
* ImpliedDeathThreat: Rebecca informs Emily that, if Emily ever hurts Sica again, people will 'never find [Emily's] body.' In the same scene, she tells the clique that she's happy to fight them because Sica is hungry, implying Sica will kill and literally devour them if they try anything.
* NothingPersonal: Rebecca lets Emily know that she doesn't hold a grudge over Emily fighting her at the museum. They were on opposite sides at the time, so she knows not to take it personally.
* PaperTalisman: She uses these, even shattering a magical shield by slapping one onto it.
* SoapboxSadie: She is passionate about certain political causes, including animal rights.
* Vigilante Girl: She told Megumi that killing is fine, but only if it's of 'bad' people like the Yakuza.

!!Sica

A wolf serving Rebecca as a familiar.

----
* Familiar: She's one to Rebecca, and she proves quite willing to attack whoever she's sicced upon.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Her name is literally a command for a canine to attack someone.
* SavageWolf: She's definitely one. She tries to rip apart Amanda and Emily just on Rebecca's say-so.
* StealthPun: The wolf familiar’s Name to Run Away From Really Fast ‘Sica’ isn’t just a word that sounds a lot like ‘sic,’ the traditional instruction for a canine to attack someone. A sica is also a type of ancient dagger which is known for being the tool of choice for Illyrian assassins.

header:Others

!!Lorelei [=McKenna=]

Another older student. Her rank is one spot below Lauren's.

----
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:It turns out that Lorelei was also a Knightcharm student who joined the Scholomance just to infiltrate. Unlike Emily, though, she wasn't able to resist the school's corruption. Even though she still insists that she's totally on the side of good and will destroy the Scholomance at the right time, for all intents and purposes she's just another villainous witch who does horrible things at the Scholomance's behest.]]
* LaserGuidedKarma: Lorelei, who tried to undermine and sabotage Lauren, has been forced to instead support Lauren as her servant. Or at least, that's what Lauren claims.
* TheResenter: She clearly despises being 'beneath' Lauren and forced to do menial labor for her.

!!Giana Bianchi and Hyunh Nguyen

Two older students in Lorelei's clique.

----
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Hyunh is killed with a horrific spell, and Giana winds up stabbed in the eye by Lauren's wand before Lauren curses her too.
* TheWorfEffect: They mostly just show up in order to be beaten by Lauren so she can showcase her combat skills.

!!Milagros Schmitt

An older student who bullied Rebecca Asher until Rebecca grew strong enough to murder her goat familiar. She collapsed, mysteriously vanished the next day, and is presumed dead.

----
* ArgentinaIsNaziland: Milagros has an Argentinian first name and a German last name, like the descendants of many Nazis who fled to Argentina. It's also implied that she may have had Nazi tendencies herself and that these were among the reasons she mercilessly bullied Rebecca.
* PosthumousCharacter: It's heavily implied Rebecca killed her and fed her to Sica.

!Knightcharm

header:Emily’s original team

!!Imogene Anders

The leader of Emily's original squad, and the latest descendant of a family whose members have studied at and served Knightcharm for generations.

----
* ElementalBaggage: She is able to summon and wield fire without needing to actually have a source of fire with her.
* NeverMyFault: It's noted that, for all she blames Emily for the mission failure (and for all Emily genuinely did terribly in the fight), neither Imogene nor the rest of her squad were able to defeat their warlogas either. Yes, they managed to keep standing and fighting until their enemies left (because Lauren had taken out Emily and stolen the magical artifacts which the warlogas had come to get), but that can hardly be called a success. Nonetheless, Imogene seems to hold Emily solely responsible for the disaster.
* PlayingWithFire: She fights mostly by summoning fire spells. They prove somewhat effective even against the magical darkness that Morgan wields.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: She gives one to Emily, telling her that even though Emily fantasized about being a great hero, Emily cleary didn't really want to fight evil or else she would have trained for combat harder and not done so badly during her first field mission.
* Well Done Daughter Girl: She is very upset over disappointing her family by having to report that her mission was a failure.

!!Hannah Guo

A cheerful, spunky witch who is a member of Emily's original team.

----
* KungFuWizard: She channels magic through her enchanted tattoos to make herself stronger and faster so she can take on enemies in fistfights.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She is a brawler who uses magic to make herself stronger and more durable in fights and whose idea of a fun night out is going to watch [=MMA=] matches live. But she also likes to watch a trashy dance reality show.

!!Amanda Naverstol

Another witch on Emily's original team. She also seems to specialize in defensive magic, but instead of using a metal amulet like Emily does, she casts spells by wrapping strings of yarn into geometric sigils and channeling her magic through them.
----
* SenselessSacrifice: Amanda hates the terror of combat and personally wishes that she'd be taken off field duty and ordered to just make magical crafts and potions as Emily was. However, she refuses to ask Dean Westley to become the team crafter and stay behind on missions instead of Emily, saying that she doesn't want to see Emily get injured again and she's willing to risk getting hurt or even killed to make sure that doesn't happen. Emily sees this as senseless since she wants to get back out into the field and Amanda manifestly doesn't want to fight again, but Amanda refuses to back down.

!!Princess

A cat who serves as Amanda's familiar. She's too weak to go into battle.

----
* AllWitchesHaveCats: She is Amanda's cat and magical helper, even if she isn't strong enough to provide much help yet.
* Familiar: She serves as this to Amanda, although she can't do much yet.

header:Others

!!Dean Westley

An official at Knightcharm who is in charge of sending teams of students on missions.

----
* BigGood: She's the highest ranking official of Knightcharm, a school dedicated to protecting innocents from evil magicians, that we've met so far.
