! Main Characters
[[folder:Ken Usato]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/ShogoSakata (Japanese), Creator/AlejandroSaab (English)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ken_usato_wrong_way_to_use_healing_magic.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Rose's newest apprentice in the Rescue Squad]]
A student that was caught up in the summoning spell that brought the heroes to the other world, he was never intended to be among them and his summoning was an accident. After it was revealed that Usato had high potential in HealingMagic, Captain Rose [[GotVolunteered "recruited"]] him to the Rescue Squad, a unit of healing mages that undergo some of the [[TrainingFromHell harshest training known in the kingdom]] in order to make full use of their [[CombatMedic abilities on the battlefield to save lives]].
----
* TheApprentice: Becomes known as Rose's apprentice, and really plays the part, even having the same mindset and mannerisms, though he's considerably more cheerful and humble, for now.
* AwesomeByAnalysis: '''[[SergeantRock ROSE]]''' thought it would be too much for him to try and learn how to control the density of his mana so never taught him. One visit to Olga's clinic, and he damn near figured it out all by himself, which earns him her praise, and a good, hearty, slap to his back.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Wishes he had magic power so he could cast spells to keep the rain from landing on him on his way home. He gets whisked away to a world with magic but then has to go through TrainingFromHell to learn how to use it.
* BerserkButton: Discrimination is a more serious one in general, but if someone starts mocking him for not exactly seeming human and they actually have genuine malice behind the words, he'll start balling up his fists and looking nigh identical to Rose's anger.
* BeyondTheImpossible: He somehow manages to physically throw an orb of magic, which has no mass or weight.
* BullyHunter: Downplayed but after catching Mina in the act of bullying Nack, Usato is clearly ''pissed'' at her actions. However, instead of hunting her down, he teaches Nack how to defend himself and fight against her.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Played with. He gets supernatural strength, speed, and durability from working out a lot... because being able to heal himself lets him train beyond human limitations and receive all of the benefits and none of the costs.
* ChickMagnet: By volume 4, Usato has managed to win the hearts of Suzune, Felm, Eva, and likely Nea. ''Possibly'' Amako as well but that's more ambiguous.
* CombatMedic: His role in Rescue Squad, seeing that aside from Rose, he's the only one with healing magic. The rest can only do First Aid, at best.
* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: PlayedForLaughs with his mannerisms and training. Usato seems to know his training is completely grueling and unreasonable but isn't sure why everyone else seems to be horrified by it as it just became a natural part of his life. This and the absurdities he encounters clash heavily with his attempts to be a HumbleHero and a normal person beneath everyone's notice.
* TheDeterminator: He does ''not'' give up. This is the aspect of his character Rose loves most.
* TheDreaded: Quickly racks up this reputation during his stay in Luqvis. If it wasn't his Blue Grizzly or the tremendous showing of power he demonstrated against Halfa, it was his [[TrainingFromHell borderline sadistic training]] of Nack that made him rightfully feared throughout the kingdom.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: After Rose's training, he still thinks he's "normal." He has to be reminded that he's got SuperStrength, SuperSpeed, and SuperToughness, and he shouldn't measure other people by his everyday experiences in Rose's care.
* ExpressiveHair: His HairAntennae tends to represent how he is feeling in comedic scenes.
* EyepatchOfPower: How do you know he's in Rose mode? When his right eye gets covered at the same time he makes a particularly nasty scowl, though occasionally his visible eye will have its eyelashes resemble her own as well.
* FaceOfAThug: Not usually, he looks fairly normal most of the time. But the instant he gets angry, even the leaders of other kingdoms immediately see ''[[TheDreaded Rose]]'' in his face, and everyone else usually is terrified at the mere sight as he gets compared to an ogre.
* FamedInStory: His actions during the battle with the Demon King's army quickly spread throughout Lyngel and the other kingdoms.
* GotVolunteered: The moment Rose learns he has the aptitude for healing magic, she renders him unconscious, carries him to Rescue Squad, and puts him through TrainingFromHell the next day.
* GreenEyedMonster: Looked upon Kazuki with jealousy for hanging out with Suzune and being popular with girls, wishing the Riaju would explode. Then Kazuki brought him an umbrella during a major downpour and offered to walk him home, along with Suzune.
* HairAntennae
* HealingHands: Is shown to have an aptitude for healing magic when brought to this new world.
* HealingShiv: Inverted. Rose teaches him how to coat his fists with healing magic, so he can pummel a guy into unconsciousness without leaving any visible injury, though the force of the punch itself is still an issue. [[spoiler: Since healing magic doesn't cause injuries, Felm's AttackReflector fails to stop him from knocking her out cold and capturing her.]]
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: The entire story is about him learning the creative applications of healing magic, from letting you get a CharlesAtlasSuperpower without killing yourself to using harmless but painful magical attacks to stun and disorient people.
* HeroicBuild: Due to Rose's TrainingFromHell, Usato has developed six-pack abs and defined muscles to go along with his CharlesAtlasSuperpower.
* HumbleHero: He truly doesn't understand how outstanding his accomplishments are. He is confused and chagrined [[spoiler: when King Lyngel grants him the Medal of Honor for defeating the Black Knight and rescuing Suzune and Kazuki.]]
* IChooseToStay: Both in the kingdom of Lyngel and in Rescue Squad. Even after completing his training, he doesn't want to go anywhere else.
* LogicalWeakness: His entire fighting style is that of a brute who only uses his physical body to battle. Naturally, this means that he is ill-equipped to deal with enemies that can prevent him from hitting them via {{Intangibility}} as shown in volume 4.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: Tends to be compared to Rose, right down to her same ogre-ish mannerisms of raw anger when something really manages to piss him off. [[ObliviousToHisOwnDescription The comments either fly over his head]], or he vehemently denies such claims despite being too close to be coincidental. When he does occasionally dip too hard into being like her, however, even ''he'' is horrified at the prospect, [[HypocriticalHumor but finds it instinctively necessary anyway for Nack's training.]]
* ObliviousToLove: Played with. Usato has more awareness than the average isekai protagonist but he tends to write off any explanation that involves a girl actually liking him. Case in point; [[spoiler: when it's revealed that Suzune has announced her feelings for him across the whole continent, he writes this off as her trying to get out of marriage prospects because at the time he was trying to think of ways to get out of ''his'']].
* OhCrap: Has this reaction when he figures out that Falga will be summoning Rose to kick his ass in volume 5.
* OutsideContextProblem: Rose seems to have trained him to fill this role. In a world totally focused on what magic an individual has, someone being outright superhuman through training their body is relatively unheard of and no one has any idea on how to prepare for him. Part of this gradually becomes a subversion as news of his feats becomes spread out across the kingdoms, but then there's the fact that he's from another world. Which means he also applies foreign logic to his abilities that are against all the rules and logic of this one, such as ''baseball pitching'' his magic as actual physical projectiles despite them having no mass or weight.
* PostVictoryCollapse: After the battle with the Demon Army, he collapses, right into Rose's arms, completely spent. He wakes up ''four days later.''
* StoneWall: Compared to other trained combat mages, he's this. He's really fast, really tough, and has a monstrous HealingFactor, but offensively, he's just got moderately decent SuperStrength whereas everyone else is a walking artillery battery that can obliterate entire platoons of infantry at once.
* TheUnchosenOne: Suzune and Kazuki were specifically targeted for the summon to the kingdom of Lyngel. He just got caught up in the backwash.
* UnskilledButStrong: Usato's biggest weakness in a fight is that he didn't really receive any training in combat techniques during his time under Rose (who focused on developing his HealingMagic and using that to improve his pure physical capabilities to absurd degrees). While his brute strength and sheer determination have gotten him through many battles, he realizes that won't be enough against opponents who have both power and significant skill, and starts training in actual unarmed combat techniques during his time in Miarac in preparation for the battle against Karon.
* YouRemindMeOfX: Part of the reason Rose is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold mixed with a slight motherly figure for Usato is because he's [[spoiler:a spitting image of her old vice-captain, who was similarly humble and complained a lot but did her work with full diligence without ever backing down. When a flashback physically compares the two, [[IdenticalStranger she notably resembles him]], and they even say similar things. It's enough to make her take personal care of his well-being in mind, [[TrainingFromHell outside of training.]]]]

[[folder:Kazuki Ryuusen]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KengoTakanashi (Japanese), Matt Holmes (English)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kazuki_wrong_way_to_use_healing_magic.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:What?! The three of us fight an army of demons?!]]
The vice-president of the student council before Lyngel summoned heroes.
----
* TheAce: Usato initially describes him as "the perfect handsome guy."
* CantRefuseTheCallAnymore: Initially quite hesitant to join Lyngel's campaign against the demons, he relents when he realizes he doesn't have a choice if he wants to survive. King Lyngel bowing his head to the ground and apologizing for summoning heroes without consent is what finally sways him.
* ChickMagnet: What he was on Earth. In Lyngel, he's a bit too busy either preparing to fight, or actually fighting the demon army to be concerned with romance.
* GenreRefugee: Like his two friends, he's just an OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent suddenly transported to another world and asked to fight against an army of demons. He's understandably freaked out at the prospect of taking lives in a war, not to mention the possibility of being killed himself. It takes a pep talk from Usato to get him focused and motivated the night before their first real battle.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Due to his ChickMagnet status on Earth, guys avoided him, and gave him the cold shoulder. Usato's the first male friend he's ever made.
* LightEmUp: Is gifted with the ability to use light magic.
* MagicKnight: What he ultimately becomes.
* NiceGuy: How does he treat Usato caught in the rain? He brings an extra umbrella and asks Usato to tag along.
* TheParagon: Embodies the ideal(s) of human virtue.
* RefusalOfTheCall: Angrily shouted that he, Usato, and Suzune were summoned to deal with Lyngel's woes without giving informed consent first.
* WhatTheHellHero: As shown in his character image, he angrily calls out King Lloyd for summoning him and his friends from Earth without a means to return home, and essentially drafting the three of them into a war against the demon army without their consent.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Suzune Inukami]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AyakaNanase (Japanese), Creator/AlexisTipton (English)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suzune_wrong_way_to_use_healing_magic.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:We're going to another world?! I'm so excited!]]
The president of the student council prior to being summoned to Lyngel.
----
* AscendedFangirl: On Earth, she was a ClosetGeek and {{Otaku}}, who is overjoyed at being summoned to another world to become a magical hero(ine).
* AwesomeByAnalysis: Figured out the Black Knight's special ability immediately, but even then, was helpless against it.
* BrokenPedestal: Usato, along with the rest of the class, saw her as a "perfect, unapproachable, ideal beauty," and was shocked that she spoke to him like an equal. He sees her go all {{Otaku}} as the summoning circle appears, and his belief that she's the most beautiful girl he knows shatters like a window that a baseball crashed through.
* ClosetGeek: Heavily implied. As the Student Council president, she had to keep her Otaku hobbies a secret to maintain her popular girl image. But after she and the others are transported to the other world, she's not only excited about becoming a MagicKnight in a fantasy world, but spends most of the series [[LampshadeHanging hanging lampshades]] and quoting tropes from adventure, fantasy, and romantic pop-culture (and complaining when real-life doesn't match up with her expectations).
* CuriousAsAMonkey: She has absolutely no respect for the privacy of others. She not only strips Usato's shirt in public, without warning or consent but goes through his diary without permission while he's out training with Rose.
* DesperatelySeekingAPurposeInLife: She found life on Earth boring and without meaning. Along comes the summon spell, and she's as giddy as a small kid on her birthday.
* DramaQueen: Suzune ''loves'' [[LargeHam hamming it up]] whenever Usato is around, dramatically gesturing and speaking as though she's the beautiful heroine of a fantasy adventure novel, which she technically ''is'' after being summoned into another world, but she really goes hog-wild with playing the part.
* DudeMagnet: Implied. She was viewed as an ideal beauty in her former life on Earth and in this new world, she was mentioned to have garnered the affections of one prince and likely other people as well.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Her teasing as a deflection works a little ''too'' well on Usato. To the point that even after [[spoiler: she publicly admits her feelings for him across the continent]], Usato just thinks she's using him as a scapegoat to avoid marriage prospects.
* HiddenDepths: In a volume 4 side story, it is revealed that all her teasing of Usato is to deflect the fact that she actually has a crush on him. She confesses that she wouldn't be able to reveal her feelings without playing it off as a joke.
* IChooseToStay: She admits to Usato that she has little connection with her old life on Earth, and has no intention of going back even if it's possible. He admits to feeling the same way.
* JumpedAtTheCall: The moment she realized she was being summoned to another world, she got wildly excited like a kid on Christmas morning, looking at all the presents.
* MagicKnight: What she becomes in the new world.
* MistakenForRomance: On Earth, people thought she and Kazuki were dating. In truth, they just hang out together purely for the sake of the student council duties. They had no romantic interest in each other.
* MundaneUtility: She uses her electric magic to catch fish at one point.
* ShockAndAwe: Possesses an aptitude for lightning magic.
* TheTease: She keeps throwing herself at Usato. He's not interested.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Subverted, Suzune outwardly looks the part and does try to fulfill the role while on Earth, but no sooner than the summoning circle appeared at her feet did she drop the act. Her actual personality and [[TheGadfly Gadfly]] tendencies, when she is finally allowed to be herself, completely belay the typing.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Amako]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/SayaAizawa (Japanese)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amako.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:It's all for the sake of saving my mother]]
A Beastfolk {{Seer|s}} who recruits Usato into helping heal her mother.
----
* TheAce: A downplayed case but according to Amako's mother, her prophecy magic is the strongest in the family.
* BecomingTheMask: Initially only stayed in the kingdom of Lyngel to search for a way to save her mother. However, due to the kingdom being more benevolent than the rest of the world (in particular the people don't treat her differently because she's a beastfolk), she decided to do her bit to save it from destruction.
* BerserkButton: For all that is holy do ''not'' mention her [[ACupAngst chest]] and/or generally [[HeightAngst petite stature]]. Kyou and Usato found out the hard way.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Occasionally loses her cool when Usato gets a little too close to another girl, ''especially'' [[CharmPerson Nea]], but she justifies it some way or another and makes it unclear if it's just because she feels she'd be lonely without him, or if she really has feelings for him.
* CursedWithAwesome: She has the ability to see the future, which is actually pretty good magic even in her world. Unfortunately, Amako ''hates'' that she has this magic and believes the only good thing to come of it was meeting Usato.
* DeadpanSnarker: As her screen time increases, it becomes increasingly apparent that she's mostly there to snark at Usato.
* FantasticRacism: A major problem in her quest. As a beastfolk, it is unlikely that anyone outside of Lyngel would help her and the risk that she would be sold into slavery is quite high. Even if that wasn't an issue, the world's discrimination against healing mages meant that the chances of her finding someone with the capability to save her mother were pretty slim. Even in Lyngel, there were only three people who could help her but would be unable to make it to her mother for some reason or another.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Her first real ClingyJealousGirl moment kicks in when it seems like Usato is having a CrushBlush around Nea shortly after they first met, and she says he'll definitely get tricked by women in the future, to which Usato actually wonders if that's a vision of hers. It wasn't -- [[RightForTheWrongReasons and yet was right on the mark anyway.]]
* LeonineContract: Invokes this on Usato. Because she granted him a chance to change the future and save his friends, she believes she is entitled to "payment". It's more heroic than most examples because payment in this case is Usato healing her dying mother, which Usato agrees to almost immediately.
* LittleBitBeastly: The only furry parts on her are her ears and her tail, which she covers up pretty easily with the use of a cloak.
* TheQuietOne: She keeps to herself and rarely ever calls attention to herself, though being around Usato makes her come out of her shell more. [[DeadpanSnarker And be the straight man to his superhuman insanity.]]
* RedBaron: Prophet Princess is what Rose calls her. Apparently, her role in the clan is to sense oncoming dangers to the Beastfolk race and warn them about them.
* {{Seers}}: She can see into the future. If she's sleeping, she can see up to a whole year but typically she isn't able to see very far. However, perhaps the reason why she views this ability as a curse is that once she sees the future it cannot be changed... [[TimeyWimeyBall typically]]. There are exceptions where if the future can be changed, she will be able to see a ''second'' future and will be able to show a glimpse of either future to the one that could change it.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: For the first arc, she's seldom seen and only gives Usato a brief glimpse into the future. However, it's that glimpse that helps Usato turn the tides against the demon army.
* YouCantFightFate: Her premonitions function under this rule. According to her, the only way to ScrewDestiny is if she is able to see two futures at once and even then she's essentially only choosing between those two.

[[folder:Nea]]

[[caption-width-right:350:Please take care of me master!]]
Usato's {{Dhampyr}} familiar who joins Usato on his quest after resolving the main conflict in her village.
----
* AffablyEvil: Once she reveals her true colors in her introductory arc, she's certainly an antagonist -- who is really after knowledge rather than explicitly out to kill our heroes, as she always lets people go after a period of time once she's found out what she can from them. She's also just as prone to comedic situations as any other character, such as getting a door kicked into her face as she complains about Usato's entrance, or proudly [[ExplainingYourPowersToTheEnemy explaining her knowledge and powers]] with a ''chibi face'', solely because she feels pride in doing so.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: In her debut, it seems as if she's nothing but a simple, village girl. [[spoiler: She's quickly revealed to be the BigBad of the current arc who is controlling both the living and the dead of the village to sate her thirst for knowledge]]. She gets better after joining Usato.
* BreakTheHaughty: She believed she was the "ultimate monster", a being far above humans, demons, and other creatures on the food chain. Having her ass handed to her by Usato, then being betrayed and nearly killed by her "pet" dragon drove her to a DespairEventHorizon before Usato snapped her out of it.
* ButtMonkey: The first thing that happens after she joins the group is Usato shaking her upside down and her suffering a CurbStompBattle against ''Amako''.
* CharmPerson: She's able to enslave humans and zombies with sorcery. Though Usato feels inexplicably attracted to her when they first meet, he never falls completely under her spell like Arc and is able to resist her advances.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Decides to join the group and become Usato's familiar after the main conflict in volume 3 has been resolved.
* {{Dhampyr}}: Downplayed. She's the offspring of a vampire and a necromancer, rather than a human. She gained the strengths of both parents with none of the weaknesses.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Everything involving the undead dragon was a horrible plan that drove all of her plans to fall apart on themselves. Though even using it was a GodzillaThreshold against Usato, and the actual sheer threat of it and various issues involved were things she was still studying, so it's more like EvilIsNotAToy rather than being too foolish to realize the issue.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: As befitting a vampire, her [[spoiler: confrontation with Usato has subtle sexual overtones, complete with bondage and her seemingly forcing herself onto him]]. Their familiar contract does nothing to dissuade this.
* DrivenToSuicide: After the whole ordeal with the dragon, Nea was fully willing to allow herself to be killed by Usato. When he refused, she resorted to trying to claw out her own neck.
* EntitledToHaveYou: She views both humans and monsters as possessions for her amusement. This goes double for Usato, especially when she learns he's from another world.
* FreudianExcuse: It's heavily implied that [[spoiler: her control of the village]] was a combination of her growing [[IJustWantToHaveFriends loneliness]], her grief at her parents being murdered and just a [[WhoWantsToLiveForever total lack of simulation after living in a village for 200 years]].
* GeekyTurnOn: She exhibits a variation of the trope. She's not attracted to how intelligent an individual is but rather if they can give her knowledge she does not already possess. Upon hearing that Usato hails from an entirely new world completely unknown to her, she gets increasingly turned on from the prospect and decides then and there [[{{Yandere}} that she will never let him go]].
* HeelFaceTurn: She wasn't particularly evil in the first place, just apathetic and selfish. After a fight in volume 3, where Usato saves her village, she becomes his familiar and joins him on his quest.
* HijackedByGanon: Though [[spoiler: she was the BigBad of her arc]], she wasn't doing anything that could actively harm others. The dragon she revives in her fight against Usato? Quickly breaks free of her control when her guard is down and is revealed to be an AbsoluteXenophobe hellbent on destroying humanity.
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: [[spoiler: Revives a dragon with her necromancer powers only for it to disobey her and knock her out of the fight]].
* ItsAllAboutMe: Even before TheReveal, she never had a side in the upcoming war against the Demon King. After it, she outright admits that she doesn't care what happens to the world so long as she gets what she wants.
* LateArrivalSpoiler: Nea appears on the cover for the 12th light novel, showing that she's at least more important than the simple village girl she claims to be. This is admittedly a larger problem in the West as the series had barely any progress on translations for English speakers. By the time the 12th light novel was released, translations for both the light novel and manga had only gotten up to Nea's introductory arc.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: The Wicked Dragon nearly destroying her village nearly drove her to suicide after being the one to revive it.
* NotSoAboveItAll: After being revealed as [[spoiler: the necromancer who has taken control over the village]] she shares many of the same reactions towards Usato that many of his friends do when he does something strange.
* PetTheDog: Despite her claims to the contrary, she really did care about the village, her parents built for her and tries to save it from the dragon she revived.
* OutOfCharacterAlert: Not her but the fact that Usato is quickly charmed by her when he's previously had no problem with the advances of other girls suggests that she's more than she appears.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Actually only 300.
* RetGone: [[spoiler:She does this voluntarily at the end of her introductory arc, wiping herself from the memories of the townspeople she was mind-controlling, even though they only knew her as a young villager. When quizzed, the old woman who took the role of her mother only has a vague feeling of living in the same house as her, nothing more. Nea herself doesn't seem too bothered by any of this.]]
* SquishyWizard: She relies entirely on mind control and sorcery to fight and restrain her enemies. [[spoiler:She figured out early on that a direct confrontation with someone like Usato would be pointless, which is why she uses mind-controlled zombies, Arc, and even an ancient zombie dragon against him instead of confronting him in a one-on-one fight. This also applies after her HeelFaceTurn when she joins Usato's party as his familiar. Through their link she is able to enhance Usato's abilities, give him restraint magic powers, dispel harmful effects and curses from him, and she essentially becomes the support player to Usato's tank.]]
* SummonBiggerFish: After figuring out how strong Usato is, she realizes she can't capture and enthrall him by herself, even with an army of zombies backing her up. So she decides to awaken her parents' old pet; an ancient zombie dragon!
* SuperpowerLottery: In a world where mages only get one kind of magic, Nea stands out as having ''two'' different magics she specializes in. She has control over both [[spoiler: the living and dead, as well as MindManipulation. On top of that she's also an expert sorcerer though she did need to work to that level and she can also shapeshift into small creatures]].
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Her revival of the Wicked Dragon in her introductory arc ended up [[spoiler: awakening Karon's dragon side,]] which results in the primary conflict of volume 5.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: She can turn into small creatures, like owls or bats. She prefers the former because it's cuter.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's hard to talk about her without revealing... pretty much anything about her in the first arc.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Usato and his companions "rescue" her from a gang of zombies in the woods.[[spoiler: The revelation that she was in control of the zombies the whole time means it was clearly staged to lure travellers to her village so she could enthrall them.]]
* XanatosGambit: The end of volume 3 has her quickly pull one off. Without any reason to live on, she has accepted death at Usato's hands. When he refuses, she tries to claw out her own neck. Either she gets the sweet release of death or Usato stops her and activates a familiar contract with her. She's fine with either option.

!Kingdom of Lyngel
[[folder:King Lloyd Lingel]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HiroshiYanaka (Japanese)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lloyd_8.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Heroes, help us! You're our only hope!]]
The one who has the main characters summoned.
----
* AintTooProudToBeg: Bowed his head to the ground when Kazuki protested, loudly, about being summoned to fight an alien war without giving informed consent first.
* GodzillaThreshold: The hero summoning ritual was his kingdom's last, best hope to repel the demon army, even if he had to risk gaining an even bigger grudge by summoning something, or someone, that wound up resenting his people for it. Even so, ''it still wasn't enough!''
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Summoning the heroes was necessary to save his kingdom, though he is genuinely apologetic about it.
* TheGoodKing: His subjects, not his well-being, come first.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: When they accidentally summoned Usato along with his aptitude for healing magic, he knew it would spell another maniac like Rose.
* OhCrap: When he learns that Usato's magic affinity is healing, meaning he is going to be a monster when trained by Rose.
* TooDesperateToBePicky: The situation with the demon army banging on his door is so desperate, even after summoning the heroes, that he has to send said heroes to the nearby countries for aid, and there's plenty of friction with said countries, some of whom view his kingdom as an eyesore and would throw a party the moment the demons burn it to the ground, out of FantasticRacism, if nothing else.

[[caption-width-right:350:Please, feel free to address me as Seria.]]
Daughter of King Lloyd and friend to the heroes.
----
* AngerBornOfWorry: She gets ''very'' upset when Kazuki accidentally lets it slip that he almost died during his first battle with the demons and didn't tell her.
* DontCallMeSir: She insists that Usato and the heroes simply address her as Seria-sama, not "princess" or "highness".
* EatingTheEyeCandy: She likes to watch Kazuki train and exercise on the palace grounds. Later, during the visit to the Rescue Squad HQ, Seria covers her eyes when Suzune pulls up Usato's shirt to inspect his abs...but still sneaks a peek through her fingers.
* SatelliteCharacter: In the manga, she's always seen hanging out with Kazuki.
* ShipTeasing: She appears to have a crush on Kazuki.

* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:After Usato breaks Nea's mind control, Arc admits he was aware of what his body was doing the whole time, but couldn't stop himself from following her commands.]]
* AllLovingHero: Even though he's from Luqvis originally, he doesn't seem to share any of the FantasticRacism or magical elitism that is prevalent at their Magic Academy. 197* TheHeavy: [[spoiler:Nea uses him as her main weapon against Usato when he invades her house. Though, it turns out he was just a warm-up for her ''real'' trump card, the Evil Dragon.]]
* HumbleHero: According to his fellow guards, Arc has the skill and experience to be one of the elite Royal Knights of Lyngel. Arc, however, sees protecting the people of the castle as a more worthy use of his talents, at least until Usato invites him to join his adventuring party.
* ImmigrantPatriotism: He's from Luqvis originally, but he moved to Lyngel because their liberal, tolerant society was more to his liking. He's now one of the kingdom's best guards and is fiercely loyal to King Lloyd and his family.
* JumpedAtTheCall: He's happy to accept Usato's request to serve as his escort during his diplomatic tour of the continent.

The leader of Rescue Squad
----
* BeyondTheImpossible: The story touts the Heroes as people who can rise above and beyond all of the natural denizens in raw and magical power, which is why everyone's hopes are squarely on Suzune and Kazuki. Rose, a native-born individual and former royal knight of Lyngel, surpasses them on sheer CharlesAtlasSuperpower that the world trembles in fear of even knowing she exists, and Usato putting the teachings she gave him into practice already surpassed his companions.
* CruelToBeKind: She puts her underlings through [[TrainingFromHell absolutely hellish training]], pushing them to the brink of physical and mental collapse, healing them with magic, then starting it all over again. However, she does it to make sure they are fast enough and strong enough to survive their battles against the demon army.
* CynicismCatalyst: By all reports, she used to be nicer and more cheerful before her squad was wiped out. Now she puts those under her through TrainingFromHell so it doesn't happen again.
* TheDreaded: ''Everyone'' is afraid of her: the people of Lyngel, the demons, and ''especially'' her subordinates.
* DrillSergeantNasty: With emphasis on ''nasty''.
* EyeScream: Lost an eye, along with her squad, the last time the demon army tried to wipe out Lyngel.
* MarkOfShame: Despite having healing power, she still has a missing eye. [[spoiler:This was an injury inflicted by the Demons during the mission that killed her old men and thus she left it as a reminder]].
* HiddenDepths: Rose used to be a Royal Knight of Lyngel, and was so strong that she was something of a OneManArmy and even tied against the strongest the Demons had. Then the inciting incident that killed her squad happened, and she reversed course from being a combatant to producing the Rescue Squad, still superhumanly stronger than anyone else in the land but preferring to focus on saving lives entirely to [[TheAtoner atone]] for what happened.
* HypocriticalHeartwarming: Puts her men through hell on a repeated basis. They come under fire from someone else? That someone else just volunteered for a double helping.
* ItsAllMyFault: How she lost her first squad weighs on her far more than she'll ever admit. [[spoiler:Mostly because her opponent, who would become the future demon king, sent his squad at hers [[TakingYouWithMe to bring them all down]], and Rose was too shaken up by her [[EyeScream eye injury]] and the horror of the event, plus her vice-captain's [[TakingTheBullet sacrificial moment for her sake]], to heal any of them from their fatal wounds quickly enough.]] This is why her Rescue Squad is designed for evasion in the present: to prevent that sort of confrontation from ever happening again.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Rude, Crude, and Abrasive, but she has to be, so her squad can survive contact with the enemy and keep allied casualties to a minimum.
* MamaBear: Mess with her underlings at your peril.
* AMotherToHerMen: She's the only one who can give them grief. Anyone else... prepare for an express ticket to hell.
* MyGreatestFailure: The loss of the first version of the Rescue Squad still weighs heavily on her. It's the reason she puts Usato and the other squad members through such hellish training, to make sure history doesn't repeat itself.
* NoodleIncident: What ''did she do'' to Usato to "punish" him for calling her a brutal, middle-aged tyrant while he was fighting the giant snake? Whatever it is, it was so horrifying, he can't remember what it was, waking up two days later.
* SergeantRock: She's scarier than the entire demon army. Her trainees are grateful for it, because it means they have a much better chance of surviving.
* SlasherSmile: [[http://www.mangatown.com/manga/the_wrong_way_to_use_healing_magic/c013/28.html Just look at it!]] Usato even describes it as a "carnivore's smile".
* SoProudOfYou: When Usato rescues Kazuki and Suzane, captures the Black Knight, and makes it home alive, she tells him "You've done well" with a HandshakeSubstitute. This makes him uncontrollably cry TearsOfJoy and then collapse into her chest, completely spent.
* SuperStrength: Her raw physical strength is far, ''far'' greater than Usato's, by his own admission. Notably, after finding out the Demon Army is building a bridge to cross the river into Lyngel, she walks to the opposite side, casually lifts up a log the size of a ''fully grown California Redwood'', and hurtles it at them like a javelin, smashing their bridge with an [[SlasherSmile evil grin on her face]].
* TakeUpMySword: She believes it's only a matter of time until the demons kill her on the battlefield, and that Usato will not only replace her when that day comes, but even ''surpass'' her.
* TrainingFromHell: Running miles of laps around the kingdom, doing push-ups with gigantic blocks of stone on one's back, sending Usato into a forest filled with monsters to kill the equivalent of a giant super grizzly bear? Her training methods become so much of a RunningGag that Usato himself picks up the habits when he trains Nack, and the moment anyone hears anything about Rescue Squad training, everyone in the kingdom wants to back out of the conversation as fast as humanly possible.
* VetinariJobSecurity: The kingdom of Lyngel does not like her training methods, at all, but due to her heroic efforts, and the fact that said training ''works'', the kingdom has to grit their teeth and bear it.
* WorldsStrongestMan: Well, World's Strongest Healing Mage, but she's so physically beyond any boundaries of human logic that even Demons are horrified by the mere prospect of her power, comparable to the foreign-summoned Heroes if not exceeding them personally to a degree. She imparts a fair amount of this onto Usato with her TrainingFromHell, and clearly has the idea that he may even surpass her someday.

The Black General captured by Usato who was then "Recruited" by Rose for the Rescue Squad.
----
* TwentyFourHourArmor: Until Rose forcefully dispelled her armor and clamped down a RestrainingBolt on her, she would spend every moment that she's conscious in her magical "armor." In fact, when she was placed in the castle dungeons as a POW, she put the armor up again before she could receive medical treatment for the injuries she suffered in her capture. Usato had to ''force her'' to let herself be healed, though once he got the chance to do so, she realized she likes it, to her confusion.
* AchillesHeel: Due to WrongContextMagic. She's entirely vulnerable to healing magic.
* AttackReflector: Her magic "armor" reflects every attack heading her way, save those coated in healing magic...
* BeautifulTears: Her TearsOfJoy are ''adorable'' and Usato can't resist them.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: While she didn't have much in the way of loyalty to the demon army in the first place, she pulls a HeelFaceTurn completely because Usato is the first person ''ever'' to treat her with any genuine kindness.
* BloodKnight: Quite literally. She's a knight and lives purely for the fun of battle, as long as she's winning, that is.
* ButtMonkey: She might just be the worst one in the story. After being captured, she's subjected to many of the same punishments Usato himself was given. However, whereas these trials caused [[TookALevelInBadass Usato to grow as a fighter]], with Felm, they seem to be an excuse to bully her and nothing else. Notably, she is the only person that Nack has shown to outwardly snark at.
* CharacterDevelopment: It's revealed in volume 5 that the nature of dark magic is rigid due to dark mages closing themselves off from others and Felm was no exception. After all, she created her magic to protect herself from others. So when she is summoned to fight Usato, it's quite shocking when the form of her armor changes shape to be the [[ImpossiblyCoolClothes Rescue Squad outfit (in a darker color scheme)]]. Falga states that this is due to her opening herself up to Usato but it also symbolizes her HeelFaceTurn by showcasing her genuine loyalty to the Rescue Squad.
* EvilCanNotComprehendGood: She can't understand why Usato would want to heal her, an enemy soldier. What's worse is that she can't understand why ''she likes it'' when he does.
* FreudianExcuse: Implied. As she's fighting the human army and bearing down on the heroes, Suzune and Kazuki, her internal monologue strongly suggests that even her parents came at her, trying to kill her, and this is the reason she developed her AttackReflector magic.
* GotVolunteered: Like Usato, Rose literally picks her up, and carries her off to put her through TrainingFromHell in Rescue Squad.
* HighHeelFaceTurn: Turned from serving the demon army to serving the human army.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: The moment Usato started healing her, her internal thoughts mention that she's been wanting the experience all her life, and when he finished and tried to pull away, she grabbed his hand, repeatedly saying "just a bit longer, please" with the TearsOfJoy as shown in the page image.
* MisplacedRetribution: She blames Usato for the TrainingFromHell she receives from Rose.
* RestrainingBolt: Rose slaps one on her neck that prevents her from using her AttackReflector magic.
* SamusIsAGirl: When Usato punches her in the face, causing her "helmet" to shatter, everyone is briefly stunned to see a female face.
* SoreLoser: She loves fighting, but hates to lose.
* TearsOfJoy: The result to Usato healing her. Just look at the bottom image.
* ThisCanNotBe: Is utterly flummoxed that Usato can punch and kick his way past her AttackReflector.
* {{Tsundere}}: It's pretty obvious that she has gained a crush on Usato but she'll never say it out loud. Instead, she'll opt to either yell at him, attack him, or both. It's PlayedForLaughs largely due to her being unable to land a single hit on Usato unless he himself allows it.
* TheWorfEffect: She is a powerful and talented warrior, even without her AttackReflector ability, yet she's all but completely helpless before Rescue Squad, who can move faster than she can see.

----
* BadassNormal: They have no inherent magical ability, but Rose's TrainingFromHell has made them all incredibly strong and fast by normal human standards.
* BitCharacter: At least in the manga, their appearances are few, far between, and they don't really do much, aside from being warm bodies to keep too many plot holes from showing up.
* BoringButPractical: Their job on the battlefield is to retrieve wounded warriors from the thick of battle and take them to the healers behind the lines.
* FaceOfAThug: Usato thought Rescue Squad HQ was taken over by bandits when he first laid eyes on them.
* GotVolunteered: Like Usato [[spoiler:and Felm]] they were each beaten up and dragged into the Rescue Squad by Rose.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: They come across as a gang of angry assholes, but they occasionally show a softer side to Usato, Nack, and even Felm.
* LightningBruiser: They are all muscle-headed thugs, but thanks to Rose they can move faster than the human (or demon) eye can see on the battlefield.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: According to [[spoiler: Felm,]] they look like a mix of goblins, ogres, and bandits. They don't look like they'd get along, at all, and she's right. Fear of Rose's wrath is the only thing keeping them civil.
* {{Troll}}: They love to poke and provoke each other, and Usato, just to get a rise out of it. But if they take it too far, Rose will clamp down, violently.
* VitriolicBestBuds: They are constantly insulting, stealing food, and literally headbutting each other. But they are also a tight-knit unit that works very well together.

A healing magician Usato stumbles across, unconscious, after being beaten down by bullies, the townsfolk going [[BystanderSyndrome "he's okay, see, he's got no injuries."]]
----
* BystanderSyndrome: Constantly subjected to it. Mina and her brown-nosing hangers-on constantly harass him, they use him as target practice, and leave his unconscious form in public, yet nobody ever so much as carries him out of the middle of the street.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His parents abandoned him once they discovered he was a healing mage and not a water mage like their family is traditionally known for. This included locking him in the house for years, refusing to allow him to speak to other people, and eventually sending him to the academy to be rid of him.
* DesperatelySeekingAPurposeInLife: Before he met Usato he had no prospects or interests outside of magic school, which did nothing to help his depression and rock-bottom self-esteem. Being offered a spot on the Rescue Squad gives him a much-needed purpose and goal, as well as the HeroicSecondWind to complete Usato's TrainingFromHell.
* TheDogBitesBack: With Usato's training and encouragement, he finally stands up to Mina and defeats her in a magic tournament.
* ExtremeDoormat: Refuses to stand up for himself, ever, until Usato reveals the true power of healing magic.
* HealingMagicIsTheHardest: As he can personally attest.
* ParentalAbandonment: He had doting parents until age 9, when the magic aptitude test showed he was skilled with healing magic, instead of water magic, the family's trademark. At this point, his parents threw him out of the house and abandoned him.
* PowerIncontinence: In the past, he could heal other people as well as himself, but his depression and isolation robbed him of the ability to connect with others, so he could only heal himself. He rediscovers his ability to heal others during the fight with Mina, healing her hands when he stops her from self-destructing.
* ReunionVow: [[spoiler: Makes one with Mina, saying that he'll be awaiting her at Lyngel after she's graduated.]]
* TooDesperateToBePicky: Being bullied by Mina is a life-threatening prospect, as she ''almost killed him'' the last time she and her little gang decided to vent by kicking him around. So when Usato promises to train him to be strong enough to retaliate and ''beat her down'' so she sees how that feels, he accepts, even after being warned that his training is going to be scarier than anything Maria has to offer.

The red-headed daughter of a noble house who beats up on Nack to prove to herself how "superior" she is.
----
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: Mina and Nack's relationship only works because of their sexes; a male bullying a girl unconscious on the regular would not work as an acceptable trope.
* FieryRedhead: Red hair, explosive temper, and fire-magical attacks to boot.
* GirlishPigtails: Wears her hair this way, but lacks the innocence and cheer normally ascribed to the hairstyle.
* ItsAllAboutMe: After reuniting with Nack at the Luqvis Magic Academy, she found his personality to be completely different from the Nack she knew before, refusing to have anything to do with her. Her frustration with this boiled over into bullying.
* LovingBully: As Usato says, she's "a bit awkward." She's in love with Nack to the point that she arranged to attend the same school as him just to see him again but is frustrated with her inability to express it, with Nack's situation as a Healing specialist (which is extremely looked down upon to the point that he was disowned for it) and most importantly, with Nack's constant refusal to stand up for himself or try and better his situation. At some point she became physical with him, and after that she lost the ability to express herself to him in any other way than bullying. In the end, however, she just wanted her friend back.
* OhCrap: Expect her to have this reaction whenever a healing mage shows themselves capable of even matching her skills. A particularly notable one is after Usato catches her in the act of bullying Nack.
* PlayingWithFire: Specializes in fire magic, especially fireballs and explosions.
* TakingYouWithMe: When it's clear Nack is winning their duel and will be leaving the academy (and her) forever, she snaps and her magic runs out of control. Fortunately, this is just the impetus needed for Nack to shed his ExtremeDoormat persona forever.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: On the receiving end from Usato when she tells him "butt out, Nack's my friend." He retorts "do you treat your friends next to you that way too?" [[IntimidationDemonstration (shatters a tree with his bare hands) "How about I do the same to you?"]]
* ReunionVow: [[spoiler: Vows to come to Lyngel and take Nack away from the rescue squad once she has gotten strong enough to do so because it would be annoying if he "went and disappeared." It's this, alongside Usato's "bit awkward" comment, that makes Nack realize she's a {{Tsundere}} with a crush on him. As his thoughts show, he can't pretend the last two years didn't happen, but he can choose to get along with her going forward.]]
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Because she's the daughter of a noble house that funds Luqvis Academy, nobody in the staff can reign in her destructive behavior, at least not before she straight-up kills somebody, and maybe not even then.
* SpoiledBrat: Because her parents are nobles, nobody can tell her "no" and it's made her completely insufferable.
* {{Tsundere}}: Completely unable to express her feelings for Nack, compounded by his refusal to stand up and try and better his station or have anything to do with her. Her attempts to reconnect with him end up turning into vicious bullying by the end.
* YouAreWhatYouHate: She loathes cowards with a passion, and is none too keen on the gang she hangs out with, because they only hang out with her thanks to her noble parent's backing, as her father forces her to, but she completely fails to realize how cowardly brutalizing Nack is, thinking she's doing him a favor by brutalizing the "cowardice of always running away when things get tough" out of him, not realizing that she's only destroying what little self-esteem he has left, and making him want to run away even more!

* TheAtoner: She's genuinely sorry that Nack had to put up with so much abuse from Mina at the academy she runs. After Usato leaves and Nack plans to join the Rescue Squad in Lyngle, she expedites his resignation from Luqvis Academy and arranges transport for him as recompense, while offering a sincere apology and some words of encouragement.
* ExpressiveHair: At least in the manga. When she was enraged at the trouble Usato brought to town by chasing Nack around with a Bluey, her hair lashed around like a bunch of live snakes until she calmed down.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Golden-haired blond. Good, kind woman.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Lets Usato wander around town with his Blue Grizzly "pet" Bluey, and train Nack so the boy can defend himself from Mina and her gang of thugs.
* SlobsVsSnobs: When the child of a major sponsor to your institution gives you grief, there's not much you can do about it while avoiding offending said sponsor, especially if said sponsor is on the "Snobs" side.

An upperclassman at the Magic Academy, and Gladys' assistant.
----
* TheDreaded: He's considered unbeatable in physical combat, due to his impressive melee combat skills and ability to predict enemy attacks with Magic Sight, such that only the most foolhardy or arrogant students even think of challenging him to a duel, which they always lose.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: He was born with "Magic Sight"; the ability to see the flow of mana through someone's body. Most people in Luqvis believe this skill was even more useless than Healing Magic, but Halfa was able to train himself to observe the movement of energy inside an opponent and predict their attacks and spells in advance, allowing him to dodge and counterattack with ease.
* GracefulLoser: When Usato beats him in their duel, he happily accepts his loss with a smile and commends Usato's strength and skill with Healing Magic.
* StealthHiBye: He loves to suddenly appear behind people. In fact, his first meeting with Usato and party is done this way.
* TheStrategist: While he's a very skilled melee fighter, his true gift is using the information gained through his Magic Sight to anticipate his opponent's moves, and come up with strategies to evade and counter-attack on the fly.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: While Halfa knew how strong Usato was before challenging him to a duel, seeing Usato lift up a training target (one that's magically anchored to the ground, no less) with one arm momentarily stops him in his tracks with an OhCrap expression on his face.
* VictoryIsBoring: For most of his time at the Luqvis Academy, few if any students could challenge him in a fight. Usato is the first person to not only match him in battle, but actually defeat him, and he relishes the opportunity for a rematch.
* TheWorfEffect: He deliberately invokes this trope with himself as the Worf, with guidance from Gladys and Welsey, in order to demonstrate Usato's skill and strength to the people of Luqvis by challenging him to a duel in front of the students at the training ground. Since Halfa is considered an unbeatable opponent to the student body, having a "useless healing mage" like Usato not only fight Halfa but ''beat'' him in a duel shows everyone that healers (and Usato specifically) can be terrifying opponents.
* WorthyOpponent: He's very happy to meet and fight against Usato, as most of the students at the Magic Academy could barely touch him with their magic. After losing their duel, Halfa resolves to train himself even harder so that he can face off against Usato in a future duel. He even considers travelling to Lyngle with Nack to challenge Rose to a duel, despite knowing she'd likely [[CurbStompBattle curb stomp him]] without stopping for breath.

! Mia Rak
[[folder: Leona]]
One of the top knights in the kingdom.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: She gets a chapter written from her perspective to more easily show the flaws in Usato's fighting style.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: The main reason she does so well against Usato isn't her ice magic or training but her ability to analyse his fighting style and exploit the weaknesses in it. Even when Usato pulls his normal crazy stunts, she is barely perturbed and if their fight was a regular match she would've ''won''.
* ClosestThingWeGot: The title of Mia Rak's hero was supposed to go to Karon but after he went berserk, the title became her responsibility due to being the next most capable.
* DidntSeeThatComing: She may have been able to account for Usato's fighting style but she couldn't account for just how [[{{Determinator}} damned determined he was]]. From her perspective, Usato should've been incapacitated when she froze his legs. His answer was to ''rip out the ground beneath him''. She freezes his arm. He uses it as a makeshift shield from her other attacks. She encases him half in ice. He dislocates his shoulders to break out of it through sheer force of will!
* FantasticRacism: Downplayed. She mentions that she had despised healing magic prior to meeting Usato.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: She has a few insecurities regarding her hero status as Karon's replacement and clearly is surprised when Usato claims that he'll be relying on her during the first battle with Karon. However, these insecurities don't impact her ability to judge others as seen during her fight with Usato.
* AnIcePerson: Her magic element is that of ice. She's also quite creative with its applications, using it to form bullets and daggers, put up ice barriers for defense, or just generally using it to freeze people.
* LadyLooksLikeADude: Typically averted but she's not happy to find out that Usato initially thought her to be a man after saving her from Karon.
* SamusIsAGirl: Leona's height and the armour she wore during their first meeting led Usato to believe she's a male knight. It's not until later when she greets him in her normal clothes he realises the knight he saved is a girl.
* TechnicianVersusPerformer: The Technician to Usato's Performer. However, because this is a combat situation, the technician actually has the advantage of more precise movements and being able to see the flaws in others' fighting styles while the performer can pull off crazy feats of strength but has incredibly sloppy and easy-to-read movements.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: She trained with Karon and they served in Mia Rak's knight corps together, which is one of the reasons she's hesitant to fight and possibly kill him in battle.
* WeakButSkilled: Any seasoned fighter would look like this in contrast to [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower Usato]] but she actually manages to fight him to a standstill.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Norn]]
The ruler of Mia Rak.
----
* TheAlcoholic: Due to the current situation, she's often found guzzling down "elixirs".
* BarrierWarrior: Uses a magic tool that allows her to summon barriers even Karon can't break through.
* BrokenBird: While we don't see most of the situation that caused her to become this way; by the time the heroes have gotten to the kingdom, it's mostly covered in ice, TheHero is well on his way to becoming another Wicked Dragon and she doesn't have the experience or the resources to fix either of her problems so she just resigned herself to drinking elixirs.
* DrowningMySorrows: By the time the heroes meet her, she's resorted to this. Her kingdom being at high risk of falling into ruins tends to do that.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Falga never really bothered to let her in on details she should've known as ruler of a kingdom until Usato and co. arrived.
* NumberTwo: She's this to Falga, taking orders from him whenever he gives them. This is largely due to her being so inexperienced that she doesn't really have any options.
* TemptingFate: Actually, she provides a rare averted example. She's still hopeful that they can defeat Karon because his transformation into a dragon hasn't reached its second phase... except unbeknownst to her it had just earlier in the day.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: Usato believes she's the same age as Rose but the stress of the current situation has aged her appearance quite a bit.

[[folder: Karon]]
TheHero of Mia Rak turned berserk from his dragon side.
----
* BigBad: Albeit not by choice but he is the main source of conflict.
* TheBerserker: His dragon factor going out of control made him this. He was initially meant to learn how to control this side of him but the unexpected awakening of the Wicked Dragon caused his dragon powers to spiral out of control.
* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: The Wicked Dragon was fully in control of his powers and actions and took outright joy at the prospect of harming others. By contrast, Karon isn't in control of his powers and truly did want to do good for the kingdom before he went berserk. He also contrasts the rest of the antagonists for truly being a force of good before going berserk.
* FaceHeelTurn: He was initially TheHero of Mia Rak but his dragon form turned him into a raging berserker lashing out at everything.
* AnIcePerson: He's the cause of Mia Rak being completely frozen.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: After a brutal battle with Usato, Nea, and Leona all giving it their all, they finally manage to restrain him. Karon's response is to trigger his second phase, growing horns and a tail and promptly handing them their asses.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Nearly subjected Leona to this fate before [[BigDamnHeroes Usato intervened]].
* TheJuggernaut: One of the few characters to match Usato in pure physical prowess but he was nowhere near his full power when he did so.
* WakeUpCallBoss: The first person to defeat Usato with his transformation overwhelming the entire party. Were it not for a timely barrier, they would have been completely at his mercy.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Falga]]
A god-dragon who acts as Norn's advisor.
----
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: It's unknown if he actually used his skills of deduction or some kind of magical ability but he knew well in advance the precise outcome of Usato and Leona's fight. Namely that Leona's tactical prowess would net her victory in a match but in a fight for survival Usato's own physical prowess and determination would surpass her.
* BrainsEvilBrawnGood: Inverted. Falga acts as an advisor to the ruler of Mia Rak and is more magically proficient. His brother is more physically proficient but is an OmnicidalManiac.
* GoodCounterpart: To the Wicked Dragon.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Is described as having a long white mane.
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: Is a blue, old dragon that is also one of the most powerful characters in the setting.
* SummonMagic: Can summon any one individual for three minutes at a time. However, it seems to work more akin to a PortalDoor, considering Rose was able to use the spell to send Usato a message from her and Nack from the other side.
* TimeAbyss: It's unknown how old he really is but his status as a god-dragon means that his lifespan is dozens of times greater than that of a regular dragon.
* {{Troll}}: Of course he knows the reason the previous hero binded the Wicked Dragon's soul instead of outright killing him. But he's not kind enough to tell the heroes that reason.

[[caption-width-right:350:There's ''another one?'' Like that [[YouMonster monster]] Rose?]]
Former commander of the 3rd division.
----
* BadIsGoodAndGoodIsBad: What does she call Rescue Squad? "Kidnappers" for taking the grievously wounded off the battlefield for treatment.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Wholly loyal to the demon king, regardless of what he does.
* RevengeMyopia: Wants to kill Rose badly to "wash away her mentor's regrets," ie, wants to avenge his death so he can rest in peace. There are three issues with this. 1.) Her mentor, the demon king, was in charge of the invading army and is the clear aggressor. 2.) Not only did he wipe out Rose's squad, but cost her an eye. 3.) The demon king is very much alive, which her peers point out, repeatedly.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Years prior, Rose had the man who would've become the demon king downright dead to rights after he sacrificed his squad to kill Rose's. Right as she was about to land the finishing blow, Amila jumped in the way much like Rose's closest subordinate [[TakingTheBullet did for her]], shaking up Rose enough to relent and for the two to escape. Amila has no idea that had she not done that, the current demon king's war would've never managed to take off.
* YouMonster: Constantly calls Rose a "monster" and is equally chagrined when she hears of Usato.
-->"What?! There's another one?! A monster like her?!"

[[folder:The Wicked Dragon]]
An ancient dragon that is revived in Volume 3 and ends up being the one responsible for a surprising number of conflicts within the story.
----
* AcidAttack: The dragon's main method of attacking others is by shooting jets of poison from its mouth.
* AmbiguousSituation: Just what would have happened if Nea had left the dragon alone? Falga believes that it would have revived with all its power at its disposal, free to wreak havoc across the world. However, both the Demon King and the Wicked Dragon himself claim that he would have simply rotted away as time passed. The only thing that seems agreed upon is that whatever would happen would have happened in around 300 years or so.
* AncientEvil: Given that Nea is at least 300 years old and wasn't aware of the true nature of this beast, the Wicked Dragon must be extremely old. Its brother Falga is referred to as a god dragon whose lifespan is dozens of times longer than the average dragon.
* BigBad: Not within this story but it's strongly suggested that he filled this role in the previous hero's journey.
* BrainsEvilBrawnGood: Inverted. The Wicked Dragon is the more physically capable of the two brothers and is an OmnicidalManiac. Falga is more magically proficient and helps the heroes with the conflict in Volume 5.
* CruelMercy: The previous hero spared his life, but left him an undead, soulless husk consumed by rage and hatred. Even his former ally the Demon Lord thinks it would have been better for everyone if the hero had just killed the dragon and been done with it.
* DarkIsEvil: Frequently depicted as a large black dragon and is perhaps the most vile character in the story.
* EvilIsNotAToy: Nea and her parents kept him locked in the basement of their manor, planning to use him as a giant, undead attackdog if they were ever threatened by a powerful foe like Usato. Unfortunately for Nea, he quickly breaks free of her control and becomes a threat to her, her village, and the entire world.
* GenericDoomsdayVillain: His goal? Kill everyone. His reason? ForTheEvulz.
* GreaterScopeVillain: Was the cause of several conflicts in the past and as such is indirectly responsible for the conflicts of volumes 4 and 5.
* HijackedByGanon: It takes all of five minutes for the dragon to disregard Nea's orders and cement himself as the true antagonist of volume 3. The only thing stopping him from destroying Nea's village is that Usato reminded him of the previous hero and he wanted some revenge.
* TheJuggernaut: It's one of only a few entities that actually surpasses ''[[StoneWall Usato]]'' in physical condition. Its brother Falga states that he would never be able to win if the two fought because he "controls power" while Falga "controls wisdom".
* KickTheDog: It thanks Nea for resurrecting it but laughs off her request to simply not attack her village and incapacitates her when she tries to fight back.
* OmnicidalManiac: Once he overcomes Nea's control, he wants to wipe out everyone and everything on the continent, if not the whole world.
* OutsideContextProblem: Though its actions in the past are responsible for several conflicts that persist into the present day, no one knew just how significant a character it was. None of the main heroes knew of its existence, Nea just thought it was one of her parent's pets and even the Demon King figured it was simply an interesting existence at best which would gradually fade away as time went on.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: The Demon King made use of him for one night and one night only. Afterward, three countries were completely wiped out.
* SealedEvilInACan: For whatever reason, the previous hero opted to seal its soul away in his sword as opposed to outright killing it.
* WalkingWasteland: One of the old records depicts it as such. Its breath is stated to corrode anything it touched and whenever it walked through a forest, all the living things within it would die.
