The main protagonist of the series. He is a member of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army as well as Shinoa Hīragi's squad in the Moon Demon Company. He, along with Mikaela Hyakuya and a few others, possesses the "seraph" gene, which is relevant to the forbidden taboo.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Mikaela calls him "Yuu-chan" out of affection, ever since they were kids.
* AintTooProudToBeg: In Chapter 96, Yuu doesn't think twice to get in PoseOfSupplication in front of the Vampire Queen Krul as proof of the sincerity of his desire to get her help in order to save [[spoiler:Mika who has turned into a demon]].
* AllLovingHero: Later on, Yuu learns everyone he knows, both enemies and allies, have been trapped in a ViciousCycle for ages. Yuu then makes it his main goal to reach a solution where everyone can get a happy ending and no one has to be sacrificed or punished by God.
* AlwaysSaveTheBoy: Mika is ''always'' his first priority. He'll crush anyone who tries to take Mika from him, no matter if they're foe or ally. [[spoiler:When Guren forces him to [[FriendOrIdolDecision choose between saving Mika or resurrecting the humans that died in the past eight years at the cost of sacrificing Mika]], Yuu doesn't hesitate to fight his own comrades for Mika's sake, even though ''Mika himself'' objects to it. Yuu still wants to save the world, but with a method that doesn't force him to lose Mika again.]]
* AmbiguouslyHuman: It's hinted from early in the series that Yuu is associated with demons, since his AbusiveParents called him "demon spawn" and a member of the Hyakuya Sect referred to him as the "Devil". The various flashbacks in the later half of the manga seriously put Yuu's own humanity in question, mainly because [[spoiler:he was Sika Madu's servant 1,000 years ago and he has been killed repeatedly, only for his master to revive him over and over again]]. The flashback arc reveals that [[spoiler:Yuu is an angel reincarnated into an artificial human body.]]
* AmnesiacHero: Yuu doesn't have memories of his childhood prior to his AbusiveParents trying to kill him and the Hyakuya Orphanage taking him in.
* AngerBornOfWorry: In the first chapter/episode, Yuu gets mad at Mika for giving his blood to the Progenitor Ferid in exchange for money and food, as he's worried that Mika's blood could get suck dry if he keeps offering it without restraint.
* ApatheticStudent: Early in the series, Yuu gets suspended from military duty and forced to go to school so he can adjust himself to human society. He hates this because all he wants is joining the Vampire Extermination Unit to avenge Mika, so much so that he's ''thrilled'' when the teacher threatens to suspend him from school too.
* ApocalypseMaiden: With the [[spoiler: Seraph of the End currently sealed up inside him]], he holds the power to finish destroying the world and bring about the deaths of many should he fall into the wrong hands or submit to it.
* ArtificialHuman: [[spoiler:Yuu isn't a naturally born human. For thousands of years, Sika Madu kept spawning him with the power of darkness, but he wasn't aware that his son Mikaela's soul reincarnated into Yuu every time he died.]]
* BackFromTheDead: After he [[spoiler: overdoses his organs explode and collapses in front of his squad and Shinya. Asuramaru even comments that the reason Yuu's soul did not move on was due to the seraph keeping him from going to the afterlife. Luckily once Yuu's heart starts back up, Asuramaru repairs it and Yuu comes back.]]
* BadassBoast: To a vampire who claims humans to be "despicable" after revealing that Yuu and co.'s informant lied to them in order to protect her family:
-->'''Yuu:''' Humans are despicable? Ready to betray their own brethren just to save a family member who's been taken hostage? That's correct. Humans would do anything to save their family. They're ready to lie shamelessly, and even turn themselves into devils or demons. If that is what you mean by despicable, then tremble in fear, as this despicable human kills you, vampires!
* TheBait: In Chapter 74, Shikama Dōji invades Yuu's heart so that Shinoa will come to rescue Yuu, finally creating an opening in Shinoa's heart that gives Shikama Dōji the chance to possess her body.
* BeautifulTears: Ferid blushes upon seeing Yuu's attractive crying face and comments that he now knows why Mika is so attached to Yuu.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: The main reason behind his devotion to Mika is that he was the first person who ever made him feel loved and needed. After Yuu was almost killed by his own parents, Mika immediately accepted him as a member of his family of orphans.
* BerserkButton: He hates vampires that refer to humans as "livestock" and drink their blood like they are blood bags.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Yuu is rather simple-minded and goofy, making people see him as an idiot. But when someone harms his comrades, ''especially'' Mika, he can easily become more dangerous than a demon.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: Both of his sclera are dark after awakening as a seraph or letting his demon side take over.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Yuu has a somewhat confusing set of ethical guidelines and it's generally hard to figure out how his train of thought works. He'll do anything to protect the people he considers family, but as his teammates point out, Yuu seems to call ''anyone'' family even when he has lots of reasons to distrust them and think of them as bad people. For example, despite initially wanting to kill all vampires, Yuu is grateful to the vampire queen Krul for keeping Mika alive and he continues to call Guren "family", despite Guren manipulating him and betraying him repeatedly. However, when [[spoiler:his demon Asuramaru]], who he had called a friend until that point, betrays his trust and tries to kidnap Mika, Yuu immediately calls him an enemy [[spoiler:and devours him when he tries to talk him out of trying to save Mika from being sacrificed]]. Later on, despite him risking his life multiple times to protect the Shinoa Squad and Guren, Yuu doesn't hesitate to cut ties with them and turns himself into their main enemy because [[spoiler:they tried to force him into sacrificing Mika to resurrect the dead]]. He also doesn't have qualms with endangering civilians' lives if it helps him achieve his own goals, and while he does intend to bring them back to life if he can find a way to do it, he doesn't seem to really care if he fails since he admits he would be fine with dying together with Mika if they can't save everyone.
* BodyBackupDrive: [[spoiler:Back in Ancient Greece, Yuu was repeatedly killed, either by Sika Madu or Noya, but he always came back because he had tons of backup bodies created from the original "Yuu" eyeballs kept in Sika Madu's lab.]]
* BookDumb: He completely failed all of his exams, in a complete contrast to Kimizuki. Justified in that growing up in a vampire city led him to miss out on a lot of schooling. Despite that, he does have flashes of intelligence from time to time, such as when he quickly solves a riddle that initially was stumping [[spoiler:Crowley]].
* BrokenBird: Due to his parents' abuse and watching the Hyakuya orphans die, he refused to form bonds with other people for a long time. It takes a while for him to even open up, and allow himself to trust his squad.
* BrokenHero: {{Deconstructed|Trope}}. Throughout his life, people have either tried to kill him or died on him. His traumatic childhood left him unable to love himself, so he puts on a cheerful and optimistic facade to make his friends laugh so they'll love him and want him to stay around.
* BrokenTears: In Chapter 90, as he [[spoiler:watches Mika die]], Yuu dissolves into tears and starts to desperately plead ''anyone'' to save [[spoiler:Mika]] because he'll feel all alone if he loses [[spoiler:Mika]] again.
* BullyHunter: Subverted. Yuu speaks up to the bullies picking on Yoichi, but it's really more that he's looking for a fight than that he's angry on Yoichi's behalf.
* CastFromCalories: After [[spoiler:he absorbs Asuramaru's very being into himself]], Yuu gets many times hungrier because he needs to consume calories to give power to his demon [[spoiler:Mika]]. When he and Mika decide to [[spoiler:look into his forgotten memories]], they have to steal food supplies because Yuu needs to eat a lot to make enough energy for the task.
* TheChampion: If someone attempts to harm Mika in any way, that is enough to put them on Yuu's shitlist, regardless of their previous relationship. [[spoiler:Guren and Asuramaru find this out the hard way. While he says he's going to look for a way to save humanity without sacrificing Mika, that's just because Mika won't cooperate with him otherwise. All he really wants is to protect and be together with Mika.]]
* ChasteHero: He's oblivious to Shinoa's attraction to him and doesn't understand the romantic implications of tenderly touching her neck. Also, when Shinoa and Guren teasingly remind him that he's a virgin, he doesn't get embarrassed, just mildly annoyed, and he barely acknowledges it. At one point, he even wonders why [[KissOfTheVampire it feels so good when Mika bites him and sucks his blood]].
* ChickMagnet: Has had at least three girls develop romantic feelings for him, one of which actually confessed to him in chapter 3/episode 3.
* ChildSoldier: He's a member of the Moon Demon Company, and is 16 years old.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Mika. They met when they were eight years old and lived alongside the other Hyakuya orphans for four years until they got separated by Ferid. Once he finds out Mika is still alive, Yuu doesn't care about him being a vampire and only wants him back.
* TheChosenOne: Guren mentions a prophecy about Yūichirō when he finds him escaping from the Vampires' underground city, but for years there was no explanation for it. [[spoiler:Yu is actually the centerpiece of the millennias old conspiracy that started the whole story, both as the homunculus created by Sika Madu as well as his son Mikaela who switched places with said homunculus and is working against his own resurrection.]]
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: After watching his family and Mika killed off by Ferid while attempting to escape from the vampires, Yu has a tendency to help out anyone in need. Even if it's a little girl who was allowed to escape to set up a trap for him and his squad by vampires. Consequently, he will often rush headlong to save people if he's able to, which then often puts his new family/squadmates in danger. [[spoiler:Ultimately, he leaves Guren and the squad because they're in favor of sacrificing Mika to resurrect 90% of humanity, while Yuu wants to look for a way to save ''everyone'' without any need of sacrifices.]]
* ColorCodedEyes: Yuu has large, shiny green eyes, which is a quite unique color among the cast. This serves to make him stand out at the protagonist. It's also a hint to his secret supernatural nature [[spoiler:as a homunculus]].
* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: His life has been bad enough that he doesn't bat an eye at things others would normally find horrifying, like finding human experiments at the Ichinose household [[spoiler:and hearing he's supposed to be a sacrifice to resurrect the angel Mikaela]].
* CorruptTheCutie: Yuu agreeing to become a Namanari to hold back the seraph has caused him to start the process of becoming a demon.
* CrocodileTears: In Chapter 118, [[spoiler:Asuramaru forces Yuu to hear the Shinoa Squad calling for him to forgive them for trying to force him into sacrificing Mika to bring back their dead family members. Yuu cries as he pretends their voices have reached him and made him lose the will to fight, only to reveal it was a trick to make Asuramaru lower his guard enough for Yuu to devour him and fuel his desires so he can escape from his former friends.]]
* CutHimselfShaving: He gets into a fight with the equally HotBlooded Kimizuki. When Yoichi asks him why his face is all bruised up Yuu responds that he walked into a telephone pole.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His father [[AbusiveParents tried to kill him by stabbing him with a knife, and his mother attempted to burn him alive by setting their apartment on fire.]] He then got taken in by the Hyakuya Sect where he met Mika and the other orphans who treated him like family. Then most of the world's population died and the vampires took the children captive to use them as livestock. Yuu and the other orphans tried to escape, but Ferid mortally wounded all the orphans and only Yuu could escape. Yuu doesn't find out Mika survived until years later.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Yuu has black hair and dresses in a black military uniform, but is the main hero of the story.
* DeathSeeker: In Chapter 90, Asuramaru figures out that Yuu's true wish is dying because ever since he was a kid, when his parents called him a devil and tried to kill him, Yuu never found a reason to live and only tried to keep going hoping he would find people who would love him. The only person who truly gives him the will to live is [[LivingEmotionalCrutch Mika]] and if he ever loses him forever, he would immediately choose to die as seen when he asks Asuramaru to kill him [[spoiler:because Mika is about to die and turn into a demon]].
* DeclarationOfProtection: He swears to protect his TrueCompanions, who he calls his new family, and Mika, the only one left of his original family. It's, however, somewhat deconstructed since Yuu's desperation to never lose anyone again causes him to make rash and risky decisions and sometimes he endangers the very people he wants to protect because of it.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: In the manga, Yuu became friends with Mika after the latter beat him up upon his arrival at the Hyakuya Orphanage. The anime doesn't show this part, though.
* DemonOfHumanOrigin: In Chapter 41, he [[spoiler: is transformed by Asuramaru to a full demon in order to suppress the angel's power.]]
* {{Determinator}}: ''Nothing'' can stop Yuu when he's fighting to protect his loved ones, especially Mika. [[spoiler:After Guren reveals his plan is to sacrifice Mika in exchange of resurrecting the humans who died in the past eight years, Yuu is determined to fight anyone who gets in his way so he can keep Mika with him. Even though the Shinoa Squad, Asuramaru and Mika demanded Yuu to stop, Yuu refuses to give up on Mika, even if it kills him.]]
* DevotedToYou: Yuu has a seemingly natural ability to inspire single-minded devotion from others, as seen with Mika and Shinoa loving him to levels of obsession. [[spoiler:Turns out that Mika's devotion to Yuu has lasted for millions of years, ever since Yuu/Mikaela gave him a name back when Mika/Yuu was a mere homunculus.]]
* ElementalBarrier: As the Seraph of the Second Trumpet, he can raise pillars of earth and salt to defend himself.
* ElementalWeapon: His Seraph form is able to manifest a large spear (or blade in manga) made of salt that could turn any living beings into salt, hence his title - the King of Salt. A few slashes inflicted on Abaddon of the Fifth Trumpet using the blade is sufficient to pulverize it into salt particles.
* EmptyEyes: Flashbacks [[spoiler:of about 1000 years ago]] show a young Yuu having emotionless eyes with no shine in them.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Hinted at with Mika, Kimizuki, and Yoichi. Also, in chapter 46 Ferid flirts with Yuu and compliments his good looks and beautiful eyes.
* ExcessiveMourning: Yuu mourned the Hyakuya kids for four years without making any new friends or accepting others until Guren forces him to join the Shinoa Squad.
* ExpositoryPronoun: Yuu is normally a ''very'' informal speaker, to the point of being rude, but when Guren berates their squad for their tardiness, he steps out and starts apologizing completely politely and serenely (even ditching his usual [[UsefulNotes/JapanesePronouns "ore"]] for "jibun"), showing that Yuu can be mature and responsible when he wants to.
* EyeColourChange: Yuu's eye color [[TechnicolorEyes can change as his form changes as Namanari, demon, or seraph]].
** When he becomes half Seraph (episode 11), his right sclera eye becomes red while his left eye becomes completely black with blood flowing out of it.
** When he becomes Namanari (episode 21), half of his eye changes to be red with HellishPupils on both of his original green eye and his red one.
** When he becomes Seraph as King of Salt (episode 24), both of his sclera are dark with yellow irises after awakening as a seraph.
** When he becomes Demon fully (episode 24), his eyes become completely red with HellishPupils on both his eyes.
* FamilyOfChoice: Despite Yuu's protests, the orphans at the Hyakuya Orphanage feel this way about the group due to poor relationships with their blood family. Eventually, Yuu comes to accept this as well. [[EverybodysDeadDave And then they're all slaughtered]]. Four years later, Yuu manages to find a new family (Shinoa's Squad) though.
* FishOutOfWater: Yuu is largely unfamiliar with how most of human society works and doesn't care to learn.
* HairTriggerTemper: Has a very short temper, the fuse is often lit when either dealing with vampires or being mentioned about his old family at the orphanage, particularly about Mika. His temper mellowed down after CharacterDevelopment, however.
* HatesBeingAlone: Yuu's greatest fear is feeling alone like he felt when he had to leave Mika and the other orphans behind to survive by himself. In Chapter 90, Yuu admits to Asuramaru that he doesn't want to be left alone and would rather die before having to bear that. [[spoiler:Mika's death as a vampire causes Yuu to have a total breakdown because living without Mika is equal to being alone to him.]]
* HeroesPreferSwords: He's TheHero and his Cursed Gear is a [[KatanasAreJustBetter katana]]. [[spoiler:He later makes another contract with Mika, who was turned into a demon, and obtains a new sword with it.]]
* HeroicWillpower: He can shake off a demon's attempt to control him with barely any effort. [[spoiler: His possession of the "Seraph" gene apparently helps to resist demons too.]]
* HorrifyingTheHorror: Once Yuu reveals the extremes he's willing to go to protect Mika, his own demon Asuramaru becomes genuinely afraid of him, [[YouMonster calling him a monster]] who can see nothing but Mika. [[spoiler:Yuu even ends up devouring Asuramaru to obtain the power he needs to protect Mika.]]
* HotBlooded: He can be very hotheaded, stubborn and impulsive. It often shows when he's fighting for his friends, especially Mika.
* IdiotHair: His hair is quite messy, but he has a hair that notably sticks out from the center of his head, to match his non-existent brain.
* IdiotHero: He's not that smart, lacks common sense and acts without thinking nearly all the time. Justified in that he did not receive a proper education for most of his childhood and had spent most of his childhood traumatized.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: The signs are there throughout the series, but ultimately Yuu states that the reason he tries to connect with everyone he meets is because he wants them to love him as he feels incapable of loving himself.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: For four years, Yuu was burdened with guilt and trauma over having ran away from Sanguinem by himself and leaving a dying Mika behind. He starts recovering after he finds out Mika is alive after all. Although, Asuramaru states that Yuu has a similar trauma that came even before the events in Sanguinem, but Yuu doesn't remember. [[spoiler:It's later revealed that Yuu failed to save the angel Mika from committing suicide millions of years ago and saving Mika has been his entire reason to live ever since.]]
* ImpliedLoveInterest: With Mika. The series repeatedly shows they share a very deep bond and will stop at nothing to protect each other. They have known each other since childhood and call each other "family", but it isn't explicitly stated whether their love is purely familial or romantic, mainly because [[HideYourLesbians they're both guys]], but it's made clear neither of them is willing to live if they can't be together. The author himself has only stated that seeing Yuu and Mika's mutual feelings as romantic is open to interpretation.
* IneffectualLoner: The first arc of the manga or so is primarily about him learning to cooperate with others. [[spoiler:However, the trope comes back into effect during the battle in Nagoya, when he refuses to leave Guren who was captured by vampires, and goes back for him alone. Even when using more power than usual having consumed three enhancement pills, he's still no match for Crowley, and almost turned into a demon if not for Kimizuki saving him.]]
* InSeriesNickname: His name is generally shorted to "Yuu", but some characters add [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics honorifics]]. For example:
** Shinoa calls him "Yuu-san", -san is a gender neutral way to politely and respectfully address someone, and can be attached to names, titles, and surnames
** Yoichi calls him "Yuu-kun", -kun is an informal way to address boys and men that are younger than (or same age as) the speaker, though sometimes you'll see people addressing tomboy girls with -kun.
* InsultOfEndearment: His comrades like Kimizuki and Guren call him "Idiot Yuu" (UsefulNotes/{{Baka}} Yuu) noticeably even after they've warmed up to him.
* IWorkAlone: At the start of the series, Yuu only wants to kill all vampires and avenge the deaths of his fellow orphans, not having any interest in teamwork or making friends. The first arc is basically about knocking this mentality out of him as Guren convinces him to think of the Shinoa Squad as his TrueCompanions and it seems to work since he accepts them as his family. However, as of chapter 118, [[spoiler:he cuts ties with the Shinoa Squad and Guren, not even hesitating to abandon them when they try to pressure him into sacrificing Mika to resurrect 90% of humanity. It's largely out of a choice to forge his own path separate from Guren and Sika Madu's opposing schemes. He also knows his human teammates will not condone him being willing to kill humans even if he plans to bring them back to life later if he accomplishes his goal to save everyone.]]
* InSeriesNickname: His name is shortened to just "Yuu" by most characters.
* ItsAllMyFault: He blames himself for Mika's transformation into a vampire since he left him behind to be turned by Kurl. Later on, [[spoiler:Shinoa is possessed by her inner demon Shikama, the First Progenitor, and begins to turn into a vampire because she tried to protect Yuu and he blames himself for it.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's unfriendly, abrasive and bad-tempered, but a very good person deep down. His attitude improves a lot after he finds out Mika is alive and makes new friends.
* KidHero: He's the 16-year-old protagonist of a vampire-fighting series. [[spoiler:It's partially subverted later on; while he's still mentally sixteen, he's really an entity that has lived for millions of years.]]
* KidsLoveDinosaurs: In chapter 123, [[spoiler:Yuu reverts back to his child self as he explores his lost memories with Mika. When they go back to Yuu's earliest memories, they end up in the Mesozoic Era and Yuu gets super excited to see living dinosaurs.]]
* KindheartedSimpleton: Yuu's friends know him to be an idiot who rarely thinks things through and is overly simplistic about everything, but he still wins them over because of his kind heart and protective nature.
* KnightInSourArmor: Yuu lives in a [[CrapsackWorld post-apocalyptic shithole]] and has watched people he cared about die, but he still fights with all he has to protect those he considers his family. He also wants to find a way to resurrect the dead and save everyone, even though that's considered impossible and ridiculously idealistic. Yuu knows his goal might require him to make sacrifices, but he'll accept to be called a villain or a demon if that allows him to save the world in the end.
* LeeroyJenkins: Despite the completely rational reasoning of his team and superiors, Yuu often decides to act on his own due to being HotBlooded and a case of ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight. Mitsuba, having once been the same, hates him for it.
* LimpAndLivid: He hunches over when the seraph takes over him for the first time and almost drives him to kill Shinoa.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Yuu is the one thing that keeps Mika going after their fellow Hyakuya orphans were killed and Mika's unwilling transformation into a vampire.
* LonerTurnedFriend: The trauma of watching his fellow Hyakuya orphans being killed caused Yuu to keep his distance from others for four years. The first arc of the manga is primarily about him learning to cooperate with others. After he discovers Mika is still alive, he ends up accepting the Shinoa Squad as his TrueCompanions and new family [[spoiler:until he cuts ties with them because they support Guren's plan of resurrecting 90% of humanity in exchange for Mika's life]].
* LoveAtFirstSight: [[spoiler:Back in Ancient Greece, Yuu first saw Mika's deceased angel body and was instantly fascinated by his beauty. He would spend all day staring at Mika as the latter laid in a casket and even said he wanted to wake Mika up with a kiss. Turns out Yuu's innate feelings for Mika originate from the attachment he formed in his first life as the Angel Mikaela, since Mika was his homunculus companion Yuu, which caused him to feel a deep love for Mika from the moment he first met him in Ancient Greece and then Japan a thousand years later.]]
* MagneticHero: The author has made it known in a Q&A that Yuu's "unexpected special skill" is to make others love him.
* MartyrWithoutACause: He would do anything to protect Mika and the rest of his friends, including letting himself be experimented on and be used by Guren, and taking dangerous drugs that could kill him from a small overdose. When Mika is [[spoiler:about to die]], Yuu outright yells that he wouldn't mind being killed if that can save Mika. This is because Yuu sees no value in his own life and can only find himself useful by protecting those important to him.
* MeaningfulName: The "Yu" in Yuichiro's name can be translated as "gentleness" and he's characterized by his unlimited kindness. In the prequel, Mahiru [[LampshadeHanging points it out]] and even mentions that someone like Yuu, who can be to everyone, can be compared to a god.
* MoralityPet: [[spoiler:To Sika Madu. Flashbacks show Sika Madu used Yuu in his experiments to get him to control his Seraph form, but he treated Yuu kindly otherwise and even shared fairy tales with him. Ironically, Sika Madu didn't know Yuu was his son Mikaela reincarnated as a human, instead thinking Yuu was the homunculus that was always by the side of Mikaela.]]
* NecessarilyEvil: [[spoiler:Once he decides to not follow either of Guren's or Sika Madu's plans, Yuu is ready to become a villain to achieve his goal to save the world and resurrect the dead without having to sacrifice Mika. After stating his resolve, one of his first actions is taking a child hostage to force refugees to give up their food supplies, which Yuu needs to have enough energy to explore his sealed memories with Mika.]]
* NeverBeHurtAgain: As Shinoa notes, the reason why he's so anti-social is because he's afraid of losing the people important to him again.
* NeverLearnedToRead: A downplayed example. He learned how to read using Latin script as a prisoner of the vampires (who generally originated from Europe), but never learned how to read kanji which becomes a roadblock for him as a student after escaping the vampire city.
* NiceGuy: PlayedWith. Soon after his reunion with Mika, Yuu's personality lightens up significantly, becoming more polite, friendlier and considerate towards his teammates. However, he still displays several dark traits, such as easily stating that he would sacrifice anything and anyone to keep Mika and the rest of his friends safe. Later on, it's revealed this personality is almost entirely fabricated to make others like him and get along with him because he can't love himself and wants others to do it for him. His real self is actually very emotionally broken and dangerously ruthless.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: After his second reunion with Mika in the anime, Yuu takes every opportunity to touch his face, hold his wrist and hug him.
* NoSocialSkills: When he first met [[spoiler:Ashera a thousand years ago]], there was many things Yuu didn't know and it seemed like he didn't interact with anyone but [[spoiler:Sika Madu]].
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He does lack academic education because he was never interested in school, but he's surprisingly smart, rational and perceptive. He just plays up his happy-go-lucky idiot traits around his friends to ease the tension and get them more relaxed around him, as well as lower the guard of his opponents.
* ObliviousToLove: He doesn't seem to realize that Shinoa has a crush on him, despite all the times she blushes when he touches her. [[spoiler:Eventually, he does hear about her feelings from her demon Shikama and later, Shinoa herself confesses, but Yuu doesn't seem to care at all because Mika will always be his most important person.]]
* TheOnlyOneITrust: Mika is very distrustful and paranoid towards both humans and vampires, as he sees them all as selfish and untrustworthy. Yuu is the only person he has complete trust in, but he still worries Yuu could be getting tricked or manipulated so he tries to watch out for him and warn him about others acting suspicious.
* OutOfCharacterMoment: It is used as a sign for his character development. After the fight in Shinjuku, relieved to know that his friends are still alive and touched that they were worried about him, [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Yuu]] tells his team that he's blessed to have friends like them. Their reactions say it all:
-->'''Kimizuki:''' Hey hey, are you sure you don't need more treatment?\
'''Mitsuba:''' Please stop the nice kid appeal.\
'''Yoichi:''' He obviously hit his head.\
'''Shinoa:''' No no, couldn't it be that he has been a nice kid from the start?\
'''Yuu:''' Which one of you wants to get thrown out the window?
** In Chapter 16 (Episode 13), after finding out that Mika is still alive as a vampire, Shinoa asks him if he would still say "I'll kill all vampires" again. For the first time in the series, Yuu gives a negative response to that. Even Shinoa is surprised and notes that Yuu is now more mature than before and questions whether this is because his reason to live has changed (i.e. from "kill all vampires" to "get Mika back"). This is later reinforced in [[spoiler: Chapter 39 and 43, when Yuu admits that he's thankful to Krul, ''the'' ''leader'' ''of'' ''the'' ''vampires'', for saving Mika, and is willing to ''trust'' her and ''rescue'' her after she has been imprisoned by other vampires.]]
* PartingWordsRegret: In his last conversation with Akane, Yuu denied he saw her and the other Hyakuya orphans as his family. After Ferid killed Akane and the other children, Yuu regretted never calling them his family and swears he will do so if he can bring them back to life.
* PastExperienceNightmare: After Yuu escaped from the vampire capital, he frequently has [[FlashbackNightmare nightmares]] about his [[FamilyOfChoice family's]] death (with emphasis on Mika dying in Ferid's hand), causing him to relive the incident in which the orphans were slaughtered. Demons are fond of inflicting these to their masters in order to take over their bodies.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: In Chapter 90, [[spoiler:as Mika is dying in his arms,]] Yuu breaks down crying and desperately begs Mika to not leave him alone.
* PowerGivesYouWings: During his incomplete awakening as a seraph, he has a massive black wing-like structure sprouting from his upper right shoulder. Later on, he sprouts two irregular black wings as he is awakening as the Seraph of Second Trumpet.
* {{Protectorate}}: To Mika, Yuu is his one and only family member left in the world, so he must protect Yuu at all costs, even if Yu himself protests against it.
* ReallyRoyaltyReveal: Chapter 126 reveals that [[spoiler:Yuu's real father, Sika Madu, was in fact the king of the entire ''planet Earth'' back in prehistoric times, which makes Yuu a prince.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Anytime he gets possessed and or stuck in [[SuperPoweredEvilSide demon mode]], his eyes turn red along with HellishPupils.
* RedOniBlueOni: He and Mikaela are a prime example of this trope. Yuu is hotblooded, fiery, and full of determination. Mika, though, despite having some obsessive qualities, is level-headed, calm, and often a voice of reason to his friend.
* {{Reincarnation}}: [[spoiler:Yuu's true identity is the angel Mikaela who reincarnated as a human to find a way to save his father Sika Madu.]]
* {{Revenge}}: This is Yuu's main--and initially only, as far as he's concerned--motivation in life, due to the first people who had accepted him as a family member (Mika and the Hyakuya orphans) being murdered by a vampire. However, thanks to CharacterDevelopment, he also includes protecting his new comrades and retrieving Mika from the vampires as his goals later.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: In Chapter 118, [[spoiler:Yuu abandons the Shinoa Squad and Guren after the latter revealed he wants to sacrifice Mika to resurrect the lost 90% of humanity and the squad turned against him when he refused to give Mika up. He then goes on the run with Mika so both of them can come up with a new plan to save everyone.]]
* SicklyChildGrewUpStrong: [[spoiler:In his first life as an angel, he was very sickly because of a terminal illness. In his current human body, Yuu is perfectly healthy and eventually becomes the host of two Black Demons, making him one of the most powerful fighters in the series.]]
* SmarterThanYouLook: Everyone thinks Yuu is an IdiotHero because of his simplicity, lack of proper education, and hotheadedness. Despite that, he can prove himself to be unexpectedly clever and sharp when the situation calls for it. For example, he's the first to figure out [[spoiler:his separation from Mika and his first meeting with Guren were arranged as part of a bigger plan]].
* SoleSurvivor: For four years, he thought himself to be the only one of the Hyakuya orphans who wasn't killed by Ferid during the escape from Sanguinem. He doesn't find out Mika is still alive until they reunite in Shinjuku.
* SoullessBedroom: In Chapter 71, Yuu invites Mika to his bedroom, where his only possessions are a bed, desk, and chair. The first thing Mika does is comment on the room's emptiness. This is to show how empty and depressing Yuu's life was during the four years in which he thought Mika was dead and revenge was his only reason to live.
* SourOutsideSadInside: His abrasive attitude and lone wolf-like persona act like a shield so that others would leave him alone, and so that he can avoid the pain of losing someone dear to him again. He eventually stops pushing people away thanks to finding new friends and discovering Mika is alive.
* StepfordSmiler: It's eventually revealed that his happy-go-lucky attitude is really a mask that hides his depression and inner emptiness, as the trauma of being hated by his own parents left him unable to love himself and he only can keep smiling in hopes of making others love him.
* StormOfBlades: His Cursed Gear's ability Asura Kannon materializes dozens of floating swords that can be directed to fire into enemies individually or all at once.
* SuperHearing: After he's turned into a Namanari, Yuu gets sharpened hearing that allows him to hear Ferid's car from miles away.
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: Yuu, [[spoiler: as the titular Seraph of the End, more specifically the Second Trumpet]], has one. He gives into it in Chapter 40, as he is desperate after [[spoiler: Guren becomes possessed and Mirai transforms into the Fifth Trumpet to smite humanity. He takes the trumpet within his mind and disregards Asuramaru's warning that this will erase the remainder of his humanity.]]
* SurvivorGuilt: He spent four years burdened by the guilt of escaping Sanguinem after his fellow orphans were murdered by Ferid. He gets better after he starts making new friends and Mika turns out to still be alive.
* TakeAThirdOption: In Chapter 114, [[spoiler:Guren forces Yuu to choose between sacrificing Mika alongside all the vampires and demons to resurrect all the humans who died in the past eight years or resurrect Mika at the cost of humanity as Sika Madu wants. Yuu chooses to escape with Mika and convince him to help him come up with a new plan where they can save all humans, vampires and demons without needing to sacrifice anyone.]]
* TeamDad: Mika viewed Yuu as the dad of the family they formed with the other Hyakuya orphans, since he was obviously kind and caring towards the other kids despite his grumpy and unfriendly attitude.
* TearsOfBlood: In Episode 11, he went berserk some time after consuming a pill that has been laced with special drugs, triggering his SuperpoweredEvilSide and cries a tear of blood.
* TearsOfJoy: When he reunites with Mika in Shinjuku, Yuu breaks down in tears as he's overwhelmed with joy to know his family is still alive.
* TermsOfEndangerment: He's referred to as Mika's "princess" and "angel" by Ferid.
* TimeAbyss: [[spoiler:Once the past is fully revealed, Yuu turns out to be older than ''the entire human race''. Sika Madu created him during the Age of Dinosaurs.]]
* TomatoInTheMirror: Chapter 129 ends with [[spoiler:Yuu finally remembering that he's the true reincarnation of the angel Mikaela.]]
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: He starts as an ill-tempered and surly grump, but becomes a lot more cheerful and lively after the battle in Shinjuku, thanks to finding out Mika is alive.
* TookALevelInIdealism: He started the series as an anti-social boy who didn't want to bond with others, seeing that he lost his "family" in the orphanage to the vampires. Over the course of the series, he becomes more open to his feelings and ends up valuing ThePowerOfFriendship. In addition, he starts off in the series fighting the vampires simply for revenge, but after learning about the importance of teamwork and the fact that Mika is still alive in the Battle of Shinjuku, he establishes his purpose of fighting the vampires for protecting his comrades and [[FamilyOfChoice family]]. This change brings out a much friendlier and happier side of Yuu, causing him to be much less angry and aggressive with those around him.
* TookALevelInKindness: At the start of the series, he's a brooding and abrasive guy due to the trauma of abandoning Mika to die. After learning that Mika is still alive in the battle in Shinjuku, he's a much friendlier person.
* ToyBasedCharacterization: Back when he was a kid [[spoiler:in Ancient Greece]], Yuu liked to play with ''living snakes'' instead of toys. [[spoiler:Ashera]] instantly knew there was something ''very'' messed up about Yuu and didn't want to join him in his games.
* TragicBromance: The murder of his best friend Mika affects Yuu so deeply that he decides that he has no reason to continue living except to avenge his death by dedicating himself to the extermination of the entire vampire race. Subverted when it's revealed that Mika is alive after all.
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening: Upon seeing his squadmates and "new family" being captured and fed on by the vampires in episode 11, something awakens within him that causes him to gain enormous strength. Crowley, who earlier proved to be TheDreaded, barely manages to dodge his attacks. Unfortunately during that time, he's unable to tell friend from foe, and inadvertently attacks Shinoa as well.
* {{Tsundere}}: Due to his trauma of being almost killed by his parents, he was very reluctant to befriend Mika and the Shinoa squad when he first met them, but his protective and caring side still showed through his grumpy exterior. By the time he reunites with Mika, he grows out of the trope completely.
* TsurimeEyes: Especially early on, his eyes are drawn particularly sharp to reflect his rough and grumpy {{Tsundere}} character. This is later downplayed after he becomes friendlier and more cheerful, but his eyes are still intimidating when he's angry.
* UndyingLoyalty: He and Mika are completely loyal to each other. Similarly, he is also extremely loyal to his squad teammates and Guren. [[spoiler:However, his loyalty to Mika ultimately wins out and he doesn't hesitate to abandon the squad and Guren after they prove to be willing to sacrifice Mika to resurrect humanity.]]
* TheUnfettered: As the series goes on, Yuu becomes willing to do anything to make sure he can stay together with Mika, even if that means eliminating anything and anyone that is a threat to that goal. [[spoiler:After he learns of Guren's plan to resurrect the 90% of humanity requires Mika to be sacrificed, Yuu ruthlessly fights against the Shinoa Squad and Asuramaru so he can escape with Mika, even devouring Asuramaru in the process. Afterwards, Yuu is willing to kill people and threaten innocent civilians for the sake of his goal to save the world and resurrect the dead without sacrificing Mika.]]
* UnscrupulousHero: [[spoiler:Guren reveals his plan to bring every human who has died in the conflict back at the cost of destroying all vampires and demons in existence, which would include Mika. Yuu hates this plan and decides that he'll save both humanity ''and'' Mika somehow. However, his first act is to forcefully consume his demon Asuramaru to gain power. On top of that, since his plan will theoretically bring back everyone who has died, he decides he is willing to kill humans if it allows for his plans to come to fruition.]]
* UnskilledButStrong: He hosts one of the Black Demon Series and the Seraph of Second Trumpet, making him highly powerful and nearly unstoppable, but he lacks even basic knowledge in swordsmanship and spellcraft techniques.
* UnwittingTestSubject: Unknowingly to him, the real purpose of the Hyakuya Orphanage was to use its children for human experiments. Yuu was a guinea pig for their experiments involving the Seraph of the End. He doesn't remember it because they erased his memory more than seven times while he was only seven years old.
* VictoryIsBoring: [[spoiler:After he manages to defeat Asuramaru and devour him to absorb his power, Yuu can't help to admit this heard-earned victory leaves him with sense of emptiness.]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Kimizuki. They frequently butt heads and argue, but become good friends and teammates.
* VoluntaryVampireVictim: He allows Mika to bite him and drink his blood when Mika can't hold back his vampiric thirst any longer.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: [[spoiler:For most of the series, Yuu calls Guren and the Shinoa Squad his new family that he treasures and wants to protect at all costs. However, he still prioritizes Mika over everyone else and the moment Guren reveals his big plan needs Mika to become a sacrifice, Yuu turns against him and the squad, and runs away to forge his own path with Mika. While he still recognizes he did care for Guren and the squad, Yuu is fully determined to become their biggest enemy if they keep getting in his way and is perfectly willing to kill them if push comes to shove, as he plans to bring everyone he killed back if he finds a way to resurrect everyone without sacrificing Mika.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:After he rejects Guren's plan to resurrect 90% of humanity in exchange for Mika, Yuu commits to the probability that he will be committing evil acts against humanity in the process of ultimately saving everyone, dead and alive.]]
* WentCrazyWhenTheyLeft: In Chapter 90, [[spoiler:Mika's death sends Yuu into a full-blown mental breakdown. He asks Asuramaru to kill him and tries to die together with Mika. He only calms down enough to think rationally when Krul appears to inform him that Mika can be brought back as a demon.]]
* WhatBeautifulEyes: In chapter 46, Ferid approaches Yuu and blushes saying "Wow! [[SheIsAllGrownUp Haven't you grown into the cute one!]] Your demon is on the verge of rampage yet you still have such clear and beautiful eyes. No wonder you are the '''extra special''' guinea pig."
* WillingChanneler: [[spoiler:Yuu's first human vessel agreed to let the angel Mikaela store his soul inside of his body, so he could save Sika Madu in the future.]]
* WorthLivingFor: After finding out that Mika is still alive, Yuu says his reason for living is to save Mika. In Chapter 37 (Episode 22) he admits that he's glad that he chose to keep living, even after he's lost his reason to live due to the murder of the Hyakuya orphans, because living allows him to meet Mika again. Yuu outright told this to Mika, Guren, Mahiru, and Noya in chapter 86 when Mahiru taunted Yuu. Mika [[WhenSheSmiles smiled sincerely at the words]].
* YouNeedToGetLaid: Guren seems to think this about his single-minded dedication to killing vampires.
-->'''Guren:''' This have anything to do with getting vengeance for your family?\
'''Yuu:''' Of course! It's the only thing I've lived for since you brought me here!\
'''Guren:''' We need to get you a date. Soon.

The main female protagonist of the ''Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign'' manga series and the younger sister of Mahiru Hīragi. She was appointed as Yūichirō Hyakuya's supervisor during his suspension. She is a sergeant of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and the leader of her squad in the Moon Demon Company.
----
* ACupAngst: She keeps her chest size a secret, and according to the fanbook, one of her few interests are methods to increase her bust size.
* ActionGirl: She is a competent fighter in mid-range combat.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: As she grew up, Shinoa was always in the shadow of her older sister Mahiru who was so talented that Shinoa was frequently reminded that she would never measure up to her as a Hīragi. In the present, she starts to feel in a similar position in regards to Mika because Yuu always looks at him first and prioritizes him as his reason to live, which eventually culminates in Shinoa deciding she has to kill Mika so that Yuu will finally look at her.
* AmbiguouslyBi: Although she has a crush on Yuu, she hides it from him and flirts with Mitsuba way more often.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: In Chapter 118, Shinoa finally confesses her feelings to Yuu while sobbing, in a desperate attempt to make him stay with her. Despite having heard her confession, Yuu still rejects her and runs away to protect Mika from Guren.
* BadassAdorable: She's a ChildSoldier with the appearance of a cute and petite young girl.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: While Guren was the one who installed the idea of falling in love with Yuu in her mind, Shinoa thinks she really started to develop feelings for him when he asked her to help him save Mika from the vampires, which make her feel someone needed her for the first time in her life.
* ABirthdayNotABreak: On her seventh birthday, the apocalypse occurred.
* BlackSheep: Except for [[BigSisterInstinct Mahiru]] who genuinely loved her, and maybe [[AloofBigBrother Kureto]], the Hīragi family aren't the least bit kind to her because she never shows the great potential of her sister. Her ostracization got worse after the incident with Mahiru eight years before.
* BraidsOfAction: She's a ChildSoldier and her hair is tied into side braids held in place with a ribbon at the back of her hair.
* CheshireCatGrin: As befitting her mischievous nature, it's her favorite expression.
* CoolDownHug: In chapter 14, after Yuu's [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Seraph form]] takes him over, Shinoa stops his rampage by hugging him.
* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler:The First Progenitor, Sika Madu, which resides in her Cursed Gear ends up possessing her body and starting her transformation into a vampire. The process is stopped on time and Sika Madu ends up leaving her body when Saitō and Urd capture him.]]
* DesignerBabies: She's one of the artificially inseminated Namanari children of the Hīragi family, having been imbued with a curse from before birth.
* DesperatelyCravesAffection: Shinoa grew up without knowing love from her family and she believed no one would ever care about her even if she dropped dead. She quickly becomes pathologically dependent on Yuu because [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe he treats her kindly]], getting desperate to do anything to gain Yuu's favor and praise, and feeling worthless if she can't make Yuu look her way.
* DiscardAndDraw: [[spoiler:Shinoa's demon Shikama Dōji/Sika Madu lets himself be captured by Saitō and Urd, finally leaving Shinoa's body. As a result, Shinoa loses her Cursed Gear and is left unable to fight except for a use of some low-level charms. After finding the motivation to challenge Shikama Dōji, she unlocks her hidden potential, awakening the power to control Black Demons and use them for herself. She becomes so powerful that she manages to steal most of Shikama Dōji's power.]]
* DissonantSerenity: She's very nonchalant about almost everything, including being kidnapped and threatened to be tortured by her own brother. It darkly makes sense when it's revealed her older sister Mahiru abused her horribly to make her resistant to torture and DemonicPossession.
* DramaQueen: She can act especially melodramatic at times.
* DrearyHalfLiddedEyes: She has her eyes half-closed most of the time, fitting her sarcastic demeanour.
* DudeNotFunny: Shinoa's [[MildlyMilitary lax personality]] ends up coming back to bite her leading into the Battle in Nagoya. Her decision to prank Yu by leaving him stranded by himself on the road leads to them all arriving to Guren's battle speech late, showing her squad to look immature and unprofessional in front of the rest of the Moon Demon Company.
* EntitledToHaveYou: Since she has helped Yuu protect and be with Mika, Shinoa appears to feel entitled to his gratitude and affection in return. At one point, she even feels tempted to hear Shikama Dōji when he offers information that could make Mika into a human again, all so Yuu will owe her some love for it. Eventually, Shinoa realizes that everything she did to make Yuu love her was for naught because he still prefers to be with Mika over her and easily rejects her feelings in favor of Mika. She becomes so pissed off that she swears to kill Mika if that can force Yuu to reciprocate her feelings.
* EyeColourChange: Her eyes turn [[SupernaturalGoldEyes yellow]] when Shikama Dōji possesses her.
* FaustianRebellion: Shikama Dōji is the demon she's contracted with [[spoiler:as well as the one who arranged for her to be born as a half-demon]]. Later on, as Shinoa gets a boost of willpower because of her feelings for Yuu, she starts rebelling against Shikama Dōji and his influence on her. [[spoiler:Once she decides to fight Shikama Dōji with all her might to defeat him and make Yuu return to the squad, Shinoa becomes one of Shikama Dōji's most challenging enemies after the Progenitors.]]
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: She actually first met Mika eight years ago during the events of the ''Catastrophe'' novels, but neither of them seem to remember this meeting in the present day.
* FormalCharactersUseKeigo: Shinoa always talks very politely (although with plenty of snarks) and addresses everyone else with [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics "-san"]] or last name + rank. (The only exception is [[LesYay Mitsuba]] whom she calls "Micchan".) Makes sense since being a daughter of the Hīragi family technically makes her an {{Ojou}}.
* FreudianExcuse: She was neglected by her family, physically abused by her sister, and felt unloved and worthless her entire life. Meeting Yuu made her think her life would have meaning if she was useful to him. After Yuu rejects her feelings and leaves the squad to run away with Mika, Shinoa believes she has lost her reason to be alive, and decides to do anything to get Yuu back on her team, even being willing to kill Mika to accomplish that.
* FriendlessBackground: She never had friends before, so she wants to think of her squad as her first friends.
* TheGadfly: Shinoa loves riling up other people, especially Mitsuba. She gets called out on this by Guren. Continuing this behavior for her own amusement will get someone killed.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Originally, Shikama planned to make Shinoa give into her attraction to Yuu so he could finally exploit her desires and force her to submit to his control. However, Shinoa's desires for Yuu turn out to be ''too'' strong and these end up making Shinoa able to overcome Shikama's influence completely, which derails his plans. Shikama then decides to leave Shinoa's body because he has realized she's as much of a dangerous {{Yandere}} as her sister.
* HairIntakes: Her hairstyle includes a subtle pair of intakes that look like little cat ears.
* HeightAngst: Making fun of her short height ''repeatedly'' is a sore point for her, as poor Yu and Kimizuki find out.
* HeroicWillpower: For her entire life, Shikama Dōji has been looking for a weakness in her heart that he can exploit to possess her body, but Shinoa has firmly kept the walls of her heart up to resist him. The only way Shikama Dōji can possess her is by using her feelings for Yuu to create an opening in her heart.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Mitsuba. Both girls like Yuu, but their closest relationship is to each other, with Shinoa admitting Mitsuba is more like family to her than any of her blood-related family.
* HopelessSuitor: She has a big crush on Yuu, but he sees her as a friend and nothing more, even after Shikama Dōji tells him about Shinoa's feelings for him. Shinoa becomes painfully aware that she doesn't have a chance with Yuu when he doesn't hesitate to reject her feelings and ditches her to run away with Mika. Rather than moving on, Shinoa becomes obsessed with forcing Yuu to return her feelings, even being willing to kill Mika for that goal.
* HormoneAddledTeenager: She's 15-16 years old and has repressed sexual urges that come with her age. Shikama Dōji attempts to take advantage of it by calling out Shinoa on her lustful desires towards Yuu. While she tries to keep her lust under control to not let Shikama Dōji possess her, Shinoa can't help to become easily aroused whenever she has physical contact with Yuu.
* HumanDemonHybrid: She was conceived through artificial insemination by using Tenri Hīragi's sperm that was imbued with a curse and placed in a demon-possessed woman. This should have lead to her becoming a Namanari, but Mahiru devoured the demon sealed inside Shinoa before that could happen.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: She wasn't loved by her parents and everyone favoured her sister Mahiru over her. She tried to not care about emotional connection, but deep down, she always yearned to be loved by someone. After Yuu asks for her help to save Mika from the vampires, Shinoa feels like Yuu needs her and makes it her entire purpose to be of use to him so that he'll value her and hopefully, love her. Ultimately, however, Yuu ditches the entire squad without a second thought because they all side with Guren's plan to sacrifice Mika to revive the dead and Shinoa's desperate plead for Yuu to stay with her does nothing to change his resolve. Realizing that Yuu has rejected her and doesn't need her after all, but does need and love Mika, Shinoa becomes so obsessed with getting Yuu to notice her that she intends to kill Mika for it to happen.
* InconvenientAttraction: Shinoa actively ''tries'' to not fall in love with Yuu so her heart doesn't open up to vulnerable emotions her demon can take advantage of. In the end, her attraction to Yuu is way too strong for her to resist it [[spoiler:and she falls victim to Shikama's possession]].
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Beneath her smug tease facade, Shinoa has virtually no self-esteem because she played second fiddle to Mahiru in her childhood.
* InLoveWithLove: In her profile, it's stated that what she looks for in the opposite sex is a "prince on a white horse". This implies Shinoa is enamored with the idea of a fairy tale romance and some of her behavior towards Yuu later on seems to show it.
* InsufferableGenius: She is incredibly skilled and not afraid of showing it.
* JealousRomanticWitness: In several occasions where Yuu and Mika share a sentimental moment together, the scene cuts to Shinoa intensely staring at them, as if wishing Yuu could care for her in the way he does for Mika.
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: After Yuu rejects her affections and abandons her, Shinoa starts to go off the deep end. For starters, she declares she's willing to kill Mika to force Yuu to come back to her and then, attempts to ruin Yuu and Mika's plan to steal food by sending the order to burn all the food supplies in Ikebukuro settlements, effectively dooming the civilians to starve to death.
* LackOfEmpathy: She showed signs from early on, like when she openly mocks Yuu about his trauma with the brutal murder of his fellow orphans. After Yuu rejects her feelings and leaves her team, Shinoa starts displaying this in full force when she coldly states that she doesn't give a shit about [[spoiler:Yuu devouring Asuramaru]], right in front of [[spoiler:Krul who just lost her brother because of it]], as all she cares about is getting Yuu back at her side, whether he wants it or not. She then proceeds to send the order to burn all the food supplies in Ikebukuro settlements, just to prevent Yuu from getting them, with absolutely no consideration of the civilians she's leaving to starve.
* TheLancer: She acts as Yuu's most direct {{foil}} and is the one who most often back him up in battle. After Mika joins the team, however, he replaces her in this role.
* TheLeader: She's the leader of her squad, made up of Yuu, Mitsuba, Kimizuki, Yoichi and herself.
* LittleMissSnarker: She's petite and gets enjoyment out of sarcasm and mockery, usually at the expense of Yu or Guren.
* LonelyRichKid: She's a daughter of the extremely rich and influential Hīragi family, but she never received love from anyone in her family and didn't make even a single friend until she joined the squad.
* LoveHungry: After Yuu rejects her feelings, Shinoa becomes obsessed with forcing Yuu to be with her. She doesn't care that leaving the squad is something Yuu is doing out of his own free will and she'll do anything to make him come back to her, even being determined to use brutal force to subdue Yuu and attempt to murder Mika because Yuu keeps prioritizing him over everyone else.
* LoveIsAWeakness: The only reason why Shinoa isn't affected by the desire demons feed on and hasn't been taken over by her inner demon is her lack of emotional attachment to anyone. Now that she's allowing herself to care for her new friends and more importantly, falling in love with Yuu, the wall in her heart is growing weaker and she's becoming more vulnerable to a demon's corruption. Ultimately, it is her love for Yuu what gives Shikama the perfect chance to possess her.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Mahiru says that Shinoa falling in love will trigger her corruption. She seems to be proven right when Shinoa's feelings for Yuu turn so obsessive that she'll do anything to keep him to herself, including ordering her team to burn civilians' food supplies and trying to kill Yuu's object of devotion, Mika.
* LovingAShadow: She's attracted to Yuu and believes herself to be in love with him, but compared to Mika who also loves him, she doesn't know just how much of an utterly broken and mentally disturbed individual Yuu is behind his [[StepfordSmiler cheery and optimistic facade]]. She starts to realize Yuu isn't the person who she thought he was when he attacks and abandons the squad out of his own volition, even though he had constantly called them his family and protected them until that point, all because they try to force him into allowing Guren to sacrifice Mika. However, Shinoa doesn't care anymore whether Yuu is sane or not as long as she can kill Mika and steal Yuu away from him.
* MaternalDeathBlameTheChild: Her mother died when she gave birth to her, due to her mind breaking from the curse that was inseminated in Shinoa's embryo. Ever since she was little, Shinoa thought her mother's death must have been her fault. Since the scientists couldn't make more artificially inseminated Namanari after Shinoa's mother died, she blamed part of the cold treatment she got on that.
* MirrorCharacter: As the series goes on, Shinoa gains several parallels to Yuu. Like Yuu, Shinoa was rejected by her parents and used in human experiments at a young age, causing her to see herself as worthless and empty. Shinoa develops feelings for Yuu because he was the first person who made her feel needed, just like Mika did for Yuu. Similarly to Yuu, Shinoa becomes determined to do anything to protect her object of affection and makes the decision to stop at nothing to get what she wants, even if it means hurting and even killing people. The key difference is that Mika does love Yuu back and Yuu wants to save everyone instead of only caring for Mika, in contrast to Shinoa whose love for Yuu is one-sided and she [[MurderTheHypotenuse intends to kill Mika so she can have Yuu to herself]].
* TheNapoleon: She's one the shortest members of Moon Demon Company and making fun of her height is not a smart idea. Yu and Kimizuki learned this the hard way.
* NotGoodWithRejection: After she finally confesses her feelings, Yuu immediately rejects her and runs away with Mika to protect the latter from Guren. Shinoa's response is declaring that she'll kill Mika if it means she can get Yuu.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Shinoa is quite capable as a fighter and leader on her own right, but compared to her genius sister Mahiru, she has always felt like a second-rate at best.
* PerpetualSmiler: She's hardly ever seen without a smile on her face.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Shinoa is only 150 cm (4'11") tall, but she is more than capable of kicking ass.
* PlatonicDeclarationOfLove: In Chapter 133, Shinoa confesses to Mitsuba that she loves her like family, enough to be willing to give up her life for her if necessary.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: In Chapter 118, Shinoa breaks down in tears as she begs Yuu to not go anywhere without her because she can't bear to live without him. Unfortunately for her, Yuu has already made his decision to leave everyone but Mika behind and runs away after apologizing to Shinoa for not being able to return her feelings and stay with her.
* RaisedAsAHost: She, like her sister Mahiru, was birthed and genetically modified with the specific purpose of becoming Shikama Dōji's host body. Despite that, Shinoa managed to resist possession for 16 years out of sheer willpower alone and Shikama Dōji ultimately gives up the chance to possess her because her obsession with Yuu made her harder to control than expected.
* RaisedInALab: She was birthed and raised as an experimental Namanari test-tube baby. Every day, Shinoa had to be injected with needles just to test reactions from the demon inside her, but since the tests showed no results, she was treated as a failure.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: Besides being the leader of her squad, Shinoa has had her Cursed Gear from before the start of the main series, unlike her teammates who got theirs in early chapters. Her demon also happens to be the strongest there is [[spoiler:due to being the First Progenitor]].
* SafetyInIndifference: Since her childhood, Shinoa conditioned herself to have absolutely no desires or interest in anything or anyone, in order to protect herself from DemonicPossession and cope with being treated as a failure compared to her genius older sister. Finding herself developing strong feelings for Yuu causes her to gradually grow unstable.
* SanitySlippage: Shinoa quickly starts losing her sanity after Yuu rejects her and leaves the team. She becomes unhinged, even claiming she's going to kill Mika to get Yuu back and actively endangers civilians in her pursuit of Yuu. This culminates in Shinoa [[LaughingMad laughing maniacally]] as she [[spoiler:steals all of Shikama Dōji's power to take it for herself]].
* SatelliteLoveInterest: She doesn't have personal goals, significant relationships or interests, with her character arc being almost entirely about her attraction to Yuu. It's {{justified|trope}} since her backstory as Mahiru's untalented sister and Shikama Dōji's potential vessel made her unable to see her self-worth and get attached to anything or anyone until she met Yuu and she made being of use to him her entire reason of existence. Later on, this has [[DeconstructedTrope terrible consequences in her psyche]] when Yuu rejects her desperate confession and abandons her because he has made the choice to save the world without relying on anyone but Mika. Shinoa is unable to cope with the fact that Yuu doesn't need her and prefers to have Mika at his side instead of her, even becoming willing to kill Mika and force Yuu to be with her.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Being a member of the Hīragi family, Shinoa can get away with breaking the rules.
* ShipTease: She feels attracted to Yuu from early on, eventually accepting that she has fallen in love with him, but he's either oblivious or doesn't pay attention to her feelings because he sees her as just a friend.
* SignificantBirthDate: Shinoa was born on December 25th.
* SinisterScythe: Her Cursed Gear takes the form of a black scythe.
* SlipknotPonytail: In the anime, Shinoa's hair ribbon and braids get undone when Yuu becomes possessed by the seraph and goes into a rampage.
* StalkerWithoutACrush: When Yuu is forced to go to a normal school, Shinoa is assigned as his surveillance officer, making it her job to observe him and follow him around the school.
* StepfordSmiler: Her nonchalant smiles and teasing attitude are her way of masking her emotions and coping with a cold family environment.
* StepfordSnarker: Her snarky tendencies are actually her way of coping with her neglected and lonely upbringing.
* SuccessfulSiblingSyndrome: Shinoa felt she was a disappointing failure next to her older sister Mahiru who was praised as a genius by everyone.
* SuperSenses: Her Cursed Gear gives her enhanced senses.
* SupportingLeader: She's TheLeader of the Shinoa Squad, but Yuu is the protagonist.
* TakeMeInstead: When Shikama finally leaves her body so he can go retrieve Yuu and Mika, Shinoa offers him to possess her body if that stops him from going after Yuu. Shikama refuses the offer because Shinoa's obsession with Yuu has proven to be more frightening than expected.
* TookALevelInJerkass: After Yuu refuses to stay with her and leaves the squad, Shinoa's attitude takes a turn for the worse. She becomes much colder, self-centered and ruthless, as she seems to no longer care about anything but making Yuu return her feelings, even being willing to [[MurderTheHypotenuse kill Mika]] to get rid of her main obstacle for Yuu's attention.
* TheUnfavourite: When compared to her older sister Mahiru, who was a prodigy and the next successor to the Hīragi family, Shinoa was never acknowledged by her father.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She's not Yuu's girlfriend, but she has an obvious attraction for him and if Yuu is in danger, she'll step out to defend him. Unfortunately, Shikama exploits by invading Yuu's mind and attacking him to lure Shinoa in. This gives Shikama the perfect opportunity to finally take control over Shinoa's body completely.
* WentCrazyWhenTheyLeft: In Chapter 118, Yuu rejects Shinoa's feelings and abandons the squad to run away with Mika, completely ignoring Shinoa as she begs him to not leave her because she can't bear to live without him. Next time we see her, Shinoa has become so unstable that she declares she's going to force Yuu to come back to her, even if she has to [[MurderTheHypotenuse kill Mika]] to make that happen.
* WhatIsThisFeeling: Shinoa is somewhat emotionally stunted, so when she begins genuinely feeling [[IJustWantToHaveFriends care and affection]] for others (specifically Yu) it throws her for a loop.
* {{Yandere}}: As she starts to realize her feelings for Yuu, her affection towards him becomes more and more similar with what her sister Mahiru has towards Guren. This eventually culminates in her declaring that she will go as far as [[MurderTheHypotenuse kill Mika if that allows her to make Yuu hers alone]].
* YoungAndInCharge: While she's the leader of her squad, she's also officially the youngest member, being 15 years old rather than 16 like the rest.

* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's the sweetest and most kind-hearted guy around. However, even he has a darker side to him that surfaces whenever someone threatens his family or he remembers the vampire who killed his sister.
* BullyMagnet: At school, he gets bullied and pushed around by Yamanaka's group, but he puts up with it because Yamanaka made him a fake promise to get him a place on the Vampire Extermination Unit.
* CowardlyLion: He shows bravery and skill despite being rather meek compare to Yu or Kimizuki. After getting his Demon Weapon, he's a lot more confident.
* EnergyBow: His Cursed Gear manifests as a solid bow that fires energy arrows.
* FriendlySniper: Learned how to be an effective sniper from Shinya and is one of the nicest characters in the series.

* ImprobableAimingSkills: His Cursed Gear gives him the ability to see far away, so he can target enemies from far away.

* MacGuffinSuperPerson: [[spoiler:Both the Japanese Imperial Army and the vampires are out to capture him since he's one of the hosts of the Seraph of the End.]]
* MeaningfulName: PlayedWith. In the Japanese industry, "Yoichi" is often associated with "bow", because of the famous historical Japanese archer Nasu no Yoichi. However, according to the writer Takaya Kagami, Yoichi has a different reason to have this name, but [[TheUnreveal it's a secret]].
* MoralityPet: At the start of the series, Yoichi is the first to awaken Yuu's protective instincts when he's in his vengeful lone wolf phase.
* {{Multishot}}: His Cursed Gear can manifest and fire multiple arrows.
* NiceGuy: He's easily the nicest character in the series, or at least that's what he likes to make others think.
* ShrinkingViolet: His meek demeanor makes him a target for bullying.
* SurvivorGuilt: He feels guilty for letting his sister get killed by a vampire in order to let him survive.
* SymbioticPossession: Even though he almost succumbed to DemonicPossession at first, Yoichi befriends Gekkōin, the demon of his Cursed Gear. Later on, Gekkōin willingly yields his power to Yoichi after the latter spends time talking to the demon every night. [[spoiler:However, Yoichi loses all intention of getting along with Gekkōin after the latter reveals himself as a servant of the First Vampire and antagonizes both Mika and Yuu.]]
* TaremeEyes: His big and droppy eyes signal him as the gentlest character of the Shinoa Squad.
* TiredOfRunning: He obtains control over his Cursed Gear when he gains the resolve to stop being the one getting protected and swears to protect his TrueCompanions.
* TookALevelInBadass: He goes from a weak and bullied boy to a capable fighter after gaining a Cursed Gear and coming to terms with his sister's death.
* UnbrokenVigil: When Yuu is resting on a hospital bed, Yoichi looks after him and falls asleep at his bedside.
* YouKilledMyFather: He wants to take revenge on the vampire who murdered his sister, even declaring he'll kill him so brutally that he'll regret ever being born.

One of the main characters of the ''Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign'' manga series. He is member of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and Shinoa Hīragi's squad in the Moon Demon Company.
----
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: When Yuu remembers Narumi as "the one with the limp-fish handshake", Shihō is seen stifling a laugh.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He is motivated largely by his desire to protect his little sister Mirai, who contracted the virus. In Chapter 21, [[spoiler: Kiseki-O, his demon, specifically remarks that he's willing to betray Shinoa's squad for the sake of Mirai.]] Furthermore, in Chapter 43, Kimizuki himself admits to his squadmates and Narumi [[spoiler: that he'd do anything to save his sister from being experimented on by the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, including betraying the rest of his squad.]]
* BrutalHonesty: When the squad start to think they can become [[TrueCompanions true friends]], Kimizuki is very blunt about not sharing the sentiment and reminds everyone that he's only stuck with them because he needs the army's money to keep his ill sister alive, so he'll just pretend to get along with his teammates as long as he sees it to his self-benefit.
* DeadpanSnarker: Most often, he's the one to snark at his teammates' quirks, namely Yu.
* DualWielding: His Cursed Gear is a pair of connected swords.
* HairTriggerTemper: He tries to stay cool, but Yu has a way of ticking him off.
* HealthcareMotivation: Kimizuki is only in the military to get the money he needs for his ill sister's medical care.
* HotBlooded: Temperamental and occasionally brash.
* KidsDrivingCars: He already knew how to drive at the age of ''eleven''.
* LastNameBasis: He's frequently addressed by his last name.
* LivingMacGuffin: [[spoiler: Both the Japanese Imperial Army and the vampires are out to capture him since he's one of the hosts of the Seraph of the End.]]
* NotInThisForYourRevolution: Unlike the rest of the squad, Kimizuki has no personal grudge towards vampires nor family connections to the army. He's only fighting in the war against vampires to [[HealthcareMotivation get financial support for his ill sister's treatment]].
* PerpetualFrowner: He has a grumpy expression all the time and rarely smiles.
* PromotionToParent: He has been his ill younger sister's sole caretaker since he was just a kid.
* TheSmartGuy: He's the smartest and most intellectual member of Shinoa Squad.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: He's very intelligent and was the highest of his class. He also happens to be the only major character to wear glasses.
* StoicSpectacles: He's stoic, aloof and wears glasses.
* {{Tsundere}}: Harsh type. Kimizuki is a big grumpy pants, but he has his share of soft moments for his sister and Yuu. Shinoa and Mitsuba tease him relentlessly for trying to act like he hates Yuu even though he clearly cares for him.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Yuu. They frequently butt heads and argue, but become good friends and teammates.

One of the main characters and a concurrent heroine of the ''Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign'' manga series. She is a special duty second lieutenant of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and a member of Shinoa Hīragi's squad in the Moon Demon Company.
----
* ActionGirl: She joined the Vampire Experimentation Unit at 13, and is just as skilled as Shinoa.
* AdaptationalCurves: Inverted. In the manga, she is buxom giving her a more mature look, but in the anime, her hair is shortened and her breasts are smaller to make her look more cute and girlish.
* BadassAdorable: She's pretty cute for a young girl, and is capable of kicking some ass.
* TheBigGirl: She's the squad member with the hottest temper and the largest weapon.
* BitchSlap: After her first mission with Yuu, Mitsuba slaps him for disobeying orders and breaking formation as he could have put the squad in danger.
* GirlishPigtails: As the resident {{Tsundere}}, she has her hair tied up in twin-tails.
* GlacierWaif: Despite being a 16-year-old girl of average size, Mitsuba's Cursed Gear takes the form of a giant battle axe that she can hold and swing as if it were much lighter.
* HairTriggerTemper: She has a shorter fuse than even Yuu.
* HonorBeforeReason: Subverted. She makes an active attempt to ''not'' be this, having [[MyGreatestFailure suffered for it before]]. She and Yuu, who ''is'' this, clash because of it.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: Because she disobeyed orders to try and save a single teammate, Mitsuba's former squad was killed by a Horseman of the Apocalypse.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Shinoa. They have the closest friendship in the squad.
* ImprobableAge: It's stated that she joined the army at only thirteen years old.
* LethalChef: She nearly burnt down Shinoa's room in her attempt to help cook breakfast.
* ModestyShorts: Rarely visible in the anime but in the manga whenever she sits in a comprising position or the panel has an odd angle, her biker shorts can be seen.
* MoralityPet: She eventually becomes this for Shinoa. Yuu abandoning the squad causes Shinoa to lose her morale and develop disturbingly unhinged behavior, only acting more like her former self when she has a heart-to-heart with Mitsuba.
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler: Mitsuba acted out of formation in an attempt to save her teammate, resulting in her squad leader dying to protect her.]] It's why she's very fussy on people staying in formation now.
* {{Nepotism}}: Mitsuba gets a promotion after the Shinjuku Battle, but she hates it because she knows she didn't do anything of significance in the battle and is only getting promoted because the Sangū are a high-ranking family in the Japanese Imperial Demon Army.
* ShipTease: Her early scenes with Yuu make it look like she might be crushing on him, such as her getting {{Luminescent Blush}}es around Yuu and Shinoa teasing her about liking Yuu only for Mitsuba to deny it.
* SiblingYinYang: Mitsuba is bossy, hotheaded and emotional, as opposed to her submissive, stoic and professional older sister Aoi.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She wants a man she can rely on as a leader, and who is trustworthy and brave.
* SuccessfulSiblingSyndrome: Supplementary materials reveal she often frets about not living up to high standards set by her older sister Aoi, similar to Shinoa with Mahiru.
* {{Tsundere}}: A textbook example of a Harsh type. Mitsuba is irritable, unfriendly and somewhat bossy, yet blushes way too easily when Yuu is nice to her.
* TheWorfEffect: She's a relatively high ranking military officer with years of experience, however, she often gets one-shotted by noble vampires to emphasize their strength; as shown by easily getting blasted by Mika while he's trying to get to Yuu and in Chapter 45 [[spoiler: is knocked out in one hit by Crowley.]]

The deuteragonist of the series. He is Yuichiro's childhood friend who he met at the Hyakuya Orphanage. Along with the other orphans, Mika and Yuu were taken to Sanguinem city of vampires to have their blood extracted for the vampires. After four years, Mika gained the Progenitor Ferid's favor and came up with an escape plan, but it turned out to be a trap and Ferid killed all the orphans except Mika and Yuu. To save his life, the Vampire Queen Krul turned Mikaela into a vampire against his will. After becoming a vampire, he works with Lacus Welt and René Simm as a city guard of Sanguinem, the vampires' Third Capitol. He eventually reunites with Yuichiro and abandons the vampire side to protect him.
----
* ActOfTrueLove: [[spoiler:During the battle of Shibuya, Mika lets his sword drain all of his blood in order to protect Yuu from Guren, which costs Mika his life. Asuramaru sees Mika's sacrifice as the ultimate proof of his love for Yuu and Yuu breaks down in tears when he realizes Mika truly loves him enough to give up his life for him, even though Yuu would rather die than live without Mika.]]
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: In the anime, his younger self is less teasing of Yuu and also much gentler than the mischievous child he's in the manga.
* AffectionateNickname: He's called "Mika" by Yuu. On the other hand, he's always called Yuu "Yuu-''[[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics chan]]''" ever since they first met, and he's notably the only one to do so at this time.
* AloofAlly: Later on, Mika unofficially joins the Shinoa Squad but makes abundantly clear that he's only there to protect Yuu and he has no interest in getting along with anyone else in the team. He also distrusts everyone around him, especially Guren, with Yuu as the sole exception.
* AlwaysSaveTheBoy: Yuu is the first person Mika will always protect no matter what. Everyone and everything else comes second.
* ArtificialHuman: [[spoiler:Mika, originally named Yuu, is a homunculus Sika Madu created to convert solar energy into dark energy. He originally was a mere eyeball until he was given a human body.]]
* BreakTheCutie: When he hatched a plan to escape from the vampire city with his family, they got killed by Ferid, and he himself was turned into a vampire. For the next four years, he was forced to live with the vampires that he and his family hate so much (including with the killer of his family), while learning the truth about the previous experimentation conducted by the Hyakuya Orphanage and realizing that the last surviving member of his family (Yuu) is being experimented on and manipulated by the supposedly good guys. He also continues to be tortured due to his constant craving for human blood. In the end, he ends up hating both vampires and humans, and the only being he trusts is Yuu, who he doesn't see until four years later.
* BrokenBird: The massacre of his family and being separated from Yuu only to spend 4 years living with the vampires he hates (not to mention becoming one) has done a number on him. He hates both humans and vampires, and has become TheStoic to cope with his trauma. He [[IAmAMonster sees himself as nothing more than a monster,]] holds little to no value in his life, but fights on to find Yuu again.
* ButNotTooForeign: His father was Russian while his mother was Japanese.
* CameBackStrong: [[spoiler:After getting killed by Guren, Mika loses his physical body and revives as the strongest demon of all. Even three demons of the Black Demon Series aren't enough to defeat him without resorting to a mental attack.]]
* CatBoy: [[spoiler:After becoming a demon, Mika gains two horns that resemble cat ears and a long tail that resembles a cat's tail. He retains these characteristics even after changing from his child to his teenage appearance.]]
* TheChampion: Mika only lives to protect Yuu.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Yuu. They met when they were eight years old and lived alongside the other Hyakuya orphans for four years until they got separated by Ferid. Despite being transformed into a vampire, Mika still thinks of Yuu as his dearest person and only family.
* CoolSword: He wields a first class vampire sword that can sprout thorny vines so that it can drink his blood in order to enhance his physical abilities and project [[SwordBeam long-range attacks.]]
* CrossAttack: After [[spoiler:his transformation into a demon]], Mika can summon giant crosses that he uses to attack and impale his enemies [[spoiler:inside his MentalWorld]].
* CynicismCatalyst: Ferid murdered most of the Hyakuya orphans because Mika unwittingly lead them into a trap and Krul transformed Mika into a vampire against his will. These events are what changed Mika from a sweet, cheerful boy to a borderline emotionless, cynical vampire.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Even before he became a Hyakuya, his life was a living hell. [[AbusiveParents His father was an abusive drunk, his mother was an insane cultist, and together the two of them threw him out of a speeding car and left him on the street bleeding as he watched them die in an accident.]] After being taken in by the Hyakuya Orphanage, he thought of Yuu and the other orphans there as his family and tried to become happy with them. Then most of the world's population died and the vampires took the children captive to use them as livestock. Mika came up with an escape plan, but it was a trap from Ferid and all the orphans except Yuu were killed. Mika blamed himself for Ferid killing most of the orphans and Krul wouldn't let Mika die so she transformed him into a vampire against his will.
* DeclarationOfProtection: He declares his desire to protect Yuu multiple times.
* DefrostingIceKing: After [[spoiler:his transformation into a demon]], Mika's emotions aren't numbed by vampirism anymore and he can loosen up around Yuu more, becoming able to smile and joke around with him.
* DeliberatelyCuteChild: He purposefully put on a cute act on occasion in order to disguise his other motives and feelings as a child.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: While Yuu is the protagonist of the human side of the main story, Mika serves as the protagonist of the vampire side. As the story goes on, Mika is just as central as Yuu in revealing the mysteries behind the origins of the vampires.
* DevotedToYou: As time goes on, Yuu demonstrates that he returns Mika's obsessive devotion with the same intensity. Yuu even admits that being with Mika is the sole reason for him to continue living.
* DrearyHalfLiddedEyes: His eyes are always half-closed for a long time after becomes a vampire, as his personality becomes cynical and bitter towards anybody except Yuu.
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: In Chapter 90, [[spoiler:Mika declares his love for Yuu right before his body explodes in front of a desperate Yuu.]]
* EmergencyTransformation: While trying to escape Sanguinem, he was fatally wounded by Ferid. While he was on the brink of death, Krul forced him to drink her blood to transform him into a vampire and save his life.
* EyeColourChange: In Chapter 36, he drinks Yuu's blood and completes his transformation into a true vampire, thus turning his eye color from sky blue to red. After [[spoiler:becoming a demon]], Mika's eyes change back into blue.
* FaceMonsterTurn: He was turned into a vampire by Krul without his consent. Later on, [[spoiler:he becomes a demon after Guren kills him]].
* FamilyOfChoice: After being abused and thrown out of a speeding car by his parents, he managed to make a new family with the other orphans at the Hyakuya Orphanage. After most of the children are slaughtered by Ferid, Mika thinks of Yuu as the only family he has left in the world.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: The ''Guren Catastrophe'' light novel revealed that he had met Guren and Shinoa once, before Yuu came to the orphanage. By the time of the main storyline, Mika doesn't seem to recognize either of them, mainly because he has no interest in any humans other than Yuu.
* FountainOfYouth: [[spoiler:After becoming a demon, Mika appears as a young child with horns. However, after officially becoming Yuu's demon, Mika reverts to his teenage appearance.]]
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: He's one of the few heroic vampires and is very protective of Yuu's well-being. He also doesn't want to drink blood from humans, having survived for years by only drinking blood from his vampire "parent" Krul and when her blood isn't available anymore, he bites Yuu only after the latter offers him his blood.
* FriendToAllChildren: Mika clearly feels protective of and identifies with children. But because he's a vampire, he also feels he has to protect them from himself.
* GenderBlenderName: "Mikaela" is a name that is more often given to girls. Mika himself [[LampshadeHanging knows this.]]
* GuileHero:
** In the first chapter, as a {{Foil}} to Yuu, Mika uses his wit to think up an escape plan with the map he stole from Ferid. It backfires because Ferid had set up a trap to kill most of the children.
** Later in the series, he starts using his wit again when Yuu helps him regain some of his confidence and [[spoiler:learning that Yuu being the angel Mikaela's reincarnation puts him in big danger]] he becomes much more motivated to use his brain to protect Yuu once more. [[spoiler:He starts by coming up with a plan that will blindside all the factions against them, since everyone else still believes Mika is the angel Mikaela, with only Mika himself and Yuu knowing the truth.]]
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: From childhood, he has always been a kindhearted blond boy, even though he has become colder in his teenage years.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: In Chapter 89, [[spoiler:he gets his body cut in half by Guren, killing him]].
* HatesEveryoneEqually: He obviously hates vampires mainly because he was forced to turn into one and a vampire noble killed his adoptive family. However, he also hates humans, not only because of the HumansAreTheRealMonsters trope, but also because of how the greed of humans had caused them to inhumanly experiment on children and his fellow Hyakuya orphans just for the sake of power. The only exceptions are [[FamilyOfChoice Yuu]], [[ILoveYouVampireSon Krul Tepes]] and the dead Hyakuya orphans.
* HeroicSacrifice: For better or worse, Mika tends to sacrifice himself and his happiness for the sake of his loved ones. He frequently let Ferid drink from him directly (which is forbidden for all vampires) in exchange for favors and things (e.g. extra food) for his fellow Hyakuya orphans while hiding the fact from them. He even sacrificed himself to give Yuu a chance to escape from Sanguinem after the other orphans were slaughtered right in front of their eyes.
* HeroicWillpower: He managed to combat his vampiric instincts for four years until he drank Yuu's blood with the latter's consent.
* HeyYou: Except for [[FullNameBasis Ferid]] whom he loathes and Krul who is his caretaker, Mika's never called any vampire by name. When it comes to human, except for [[ChildhoodFriend Yuu]], he calls all of them simply "human".
* HiddenDisdainReveal: Mika pretended to be respectful to Ferid to exchange blood for good food for the other children and also to steal the map for his escaping plan. After Ferid killed everyone, though, Mika immediately makes it clear that he despises Ferid and wants him dead.
* HideYourOtherness: He hides his vampire PointyEars with his hair. He doesn't hide them anymore after [[spoiler:he becomes a demon.]]
* IAmAMonster: He considers himself as "just a filthy bloodsucker" when asked about his identity by other vampires. He also has a notable self-loathing for being a vampire. [[spoiler: In chapter 37, Yuu tries to comfort Mika by saying that being a vampire is okay after Mika turned into a full vampire after giving Mika his blood. Considering that the major reason Mika doesn't want to become a full vampire because he is afraid that Yuu will hate him, the fact that he himself offers his blood to Mika and even says that he doesn't see Mika any differently really means a ''lot''.]]
* ILetGwenStacyDie: Mika believes it was his fault that the other orphans died at the hands of Ferid, as they might have lived if he didn't come up with a risky escape plan and lead them right into a trap.
* IcyBlueEyes: He still retained his human blue eyes because he wasn't completely turned to a vampire, but losing most of his family and being separated from Yuu caused his childhood self's cheerfulness to be replaced by a rather cold attitude.
* IdiotHair: Same like Yuu, Mika also has one or two hair that stick out on top of his messy hair. Despite of that, he is TheSmartGuy one compared to Yuu being literally TheFool one.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: With Yuu.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: He's notably arrogant, but it acts as a defense mechanism to cover his other insecurities.
* InSeriesNickname: Similar to how Yuuichirou is shortened into "Yuu", his name "Mikaela" tends to just be called "Mika".
* InTheHood: His [[spoiler:first demon form]] has Mika wearing a coat with a hood that covers his head, giving him a mysterious look.
* ItsAllMyFault: He blames himself for the other orphans' death because they were killed as a result of him falling right into Ferid's trap.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: As Mika says so himself, Yuu's happiness is his happiness. [[spoiler:In Chapter 119, Mika tries his damnedest to persuade Yuu to give up on saving him and live his own life with the Shinoa Squad, even insisting he should fall in love with Shinoa and start a family with her, because he genuinely believes Yuu will lose his only chance at happiness if he stays obsessed with him. In the end, however, Yuu refuses because he has no intention of living a life where Mika isn't with him.]]
* TheLancer: After he officially joins Yuu's group, Mika becomes his main partner and {{Foil}} in both personality and ideology. This becomes even more prominent after [[spoiler:Yuu abandons the team and Mika becomes his only ally]].
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Mika is Yuu's reason to live just as Yuu is that to him. Yuu even admits that he thought of suicide every day when he thought Mika was dead and only found meaning to his life again when he discovered Mika was still alive.
* LossOfIdentity: In chapter 53, Mika reveals (at Narumi's prodding) that he has quickly been losing his humanity after drinking Yuu's blood. Aside from his connection to Yuu, all of his emotions are quickly deteriorating with his innate desire for blood increasing. Though Narumi comes to the conclusion that despite all that, the fact that his attachment to Yuu is still as strong as ever means that he still is clinging to some of his humanity, so he can be considered an ally.
* MeaningfulAppearance: Most often than not, he will usually be wearing white any or light colors which helps his angelic-like appearance.
* MeaningfulName: Mikaela's name is derived from ArchangelMichael. Mika is one of the guinea pigs for the Seraph of the End experiments, which involves the angels based on the Literature/BookOfRevelation.
* MessyHair: His blonde hair sticks up on top of his head. But it doesn't makes him any less [[{{Bishonen}} pretty]]. If anything, it adds more to it.
* TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody: [[spoiler:When Mika becomes a demon, he appears as a small, horned child and his first thoughts are about how he desires to possess a human and devour their desires. After officially becoming Yuu’s demon, Mika reverts to his teenage appearance.]]
* MistressAndServantBoy: PlayedWith. After he was turned into a vampire against his will, the vampire queen Krul called Mika her pet because he completely depends on her blood to satiate his vampiric thrist. However, their actual relationship is more similar to mother and son.
* MoralityPet: To Krul Tepes. Her interactions with him are what humanize her the most.
* MyGreatestFailure: He has never forgiven himself for walking right into Ferid's trap when he came up with an escape plan, seeing his mistake as the reason why most of the Hyakuya orphans were killed. [[spoiler:He regrets it so badly that he's perfectly willing to become a sacrifice in Guren's big plan to resurrect the dead, all so the orphans can come back. Fortunately, Yuu convinces him that the best way to correct his mistake is to come up with a plan to save the entire world with no need for sacrifices.]]
* OccultBlueEyes: After becoming the [[spoiler:King of Demons]], Mika has blue eyes again, which makes him stand out a lot since [[spoiler:all other demons have red eyes]].
* PerpetualFrowner: In contrast to his smiley younger self, teenage Mika is frequently frowning because he has been surrounded by vampires he hates for years. He only smiles when he's having a sentimental moment with Yuu.
* PersonalitySwap: When he was younger, Mika was the more teasing and cheerful one compared to how sour-faced Yuu was. However, this is switched after they became teenagers, as having found friends in the Shinoa Squad makes Yuu [[TookALevelInCheerfulness lighten up and even more smiley]] after being reunited with Mika, while Mika has become cynical and bitter after four years in the vampire community he loathes with no one except for Krul to rely on, and the determination to find Yuu being the only thing keeping him from suicide.
* PhenotypeStereotype: He's noted multiple times to have foreign appearance because of his blond hair and blue eyes. WordOfGod is that he's half-Russian.
* PimpedOutCape: After becoming [[spoiler:Yuu's demon]], Mika wears a cape with a black fur-like trim around his shoulders.
* PlatonicCoParenting: For four years, Mika raised the younger Hyakuya orphans, with Yuu helping him since they were the oldest of the children. In [[spoiler:his own [[LotusEaterMachine ideal illusionary world]]]], Mika sees himself and Yuu as the "parents" of the Hyakuya orphans.
* PleaseDumpMe: In Chapter 119, [[spoiler:Yuu refuses to cooperate with Guren's plan to resurrect the dead anymore because Guren tried to force him to sacrifice Mika for it. Desperate to bring the Hyakuya orphans back to life, Mika tries everything to convince Yuu to give up on him and become willing to start a new life without him. He even rubs in Yuu's face that he already "abandoned" him to die once in Sanguinem and can do it again in an attempt to bring out his biggest trauma and hurt him. Despite Mika's efforts to push Yuu away, nothing works because Yuu would rather die than live without Mika.]]
* PredatorTurnedProtector: Despite his vampiric instinct to drink human blood, he still avoids killing humans as much as possible and protects his (human) childhood friend Yuu with his life. He's also seen aiding other humans at times, especially children.
* PrehensileTail: His [[spoiler:demon form]] has a tail that he can use as an extra limb, such as starting a campfire with it.
* PrettyBoy: He's been described as beautiful by many characters throughout the series.
* PromotionToParent: After the caretaker of the Hyakuya orphans died in the apocalyptic event and the orphans were taken prisoners by the vampires, Mika assumed the role of the primary caretaker and parental figure to the orphans. He even offered his blood to Ferid so he could provide better food for the other orphans.
* TheQuietOne: Mika talks very little after being turned into a vampire, mostly doesn't start a conversation unless being spoken to, and more often than not ignores all of Lacus' attempt to talk to him. He only turns talkative around Yuu.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: [[spoiler:After his death as a vampire, he becomes the King of Demons and no demon of the Black Demon Series is more powerful than him.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: He and Yuu are a prime example of this trope. Mika, despite having some obsessive qualities, is level-headed, calm, and often a voice of reason to his friend. Yuu on the other hand is hotblooded, fiery, and full of determination.
* SatelliteCharacter: Ever since all the other orphans died, Yuu has been the center of Mika's world. All of his actions are motivated by his wish to protect Yuu and stay close to him. This goes even deeper when their true origins are revealed; [[spoiler:Mika was originally a homunculus that gained a soul and sentience thanks to the angel Mikaela, who later became Yuu, and he modeled his behavior after Yuu to be a perfect double for him. From the very beginning, Yuu was the one who gave a personality and life purpose to Mika.]]
* SayMyName: Mika yelling "Yuu-chan" in a dangerous situation is a common occurrence. In fact, the fanbook reveals that his favorite phrase is "Yuu-chan" itself.
* ASimplePlan: He tried so hard to plan out an escape for himself and his family from the vampire city, and almost succeeded until it went all horribly wrong.
* SixthRanger: By chapter 41, Mika completely leaves the vampires to join the Shinoa Squad so that he can be with Yuu.
* SnarkyNonHumanSidekick: After [[spoiler:he becomes Yuu's new demon]], Mika gets a big sarcastic streak and takes the chance to make sassy remarks at Yuu's stupidity at every turn.
* SourOutsideSadInside: He tends to brush other vampires and humans off (except for the orphans in Sanguinem and Yuu) with cold indifference and is openly hostile to other characters at times in order to keep a distance.
* SpockSpeak: When he speaks, he tends to speak cryptically and not more than what the question requires of him.
* StagesOfMonsterGrief: Mika is turned into a vampire by Krul, against his will. For the following four years, Mika resists the urge to drink human blood out of sheer willpower because he doesn't want to become the same as the vampires that enslaved and killed his fellow orphans. When he finally reunites with Yuu and Yuu promises Mika being a vampire won't change them being family, Mika finally drinks Yuu's blood and chooses to cling on to his love for Yuu as the only emotion that keeps him from becoming a heartless monster like the other vampires.
* TheStoic: He guards his emotions in the present day and rarely changes his default, indifferent demeanor. [[NotSoStoic Yuu makes him more emotional, though.]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality: While he may typically act reserved and unsociable, he becomes warmer and more emotional around Yuu.
* SurvivorGuilt: Most of the Hyakuya orphans died because of Mika's failed escape plan, with only Yuu managing to get away and Mika surviving because of Krul forcibly transforming him into a vampire. Ever since then, Mika finds living to be nothing but painful [[spoiler:and wouldn't mind Guren to sacrifice him if the orphans can be brought back to life]]. Fortunately, [[spoiler:Yuu convinces Mika to get rid of his own guilt by coming up with a plan that can resurrect the dead with no need of more sacrifices.]]
* TakingTheBullet:
** When Yuu's [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Seraph form]] first manifests, Mika uses his own body as a shield to stop Yuu from stabbing Shinoa in his rampage. Mika doesn't care about Shinoa or humans at all, but he still doesn't want to see Yuu killing a human.
** In Chapter 87, Mika shields Yuu from Guren's sword with his body.
* TargetedHumanSacrifice: [[spoiler:The cornerstone of Guren's master plan needs Mika to be sacrificed to bring back to life all the humans who died in the past eight years, because Guren claims that Mika is the First Vampire Sika Madu's son and the price of his sacrifice is equivalent to all of the lost humanity.]]
* TeamMom: In his younger days, Mika took on a motherly role towards the other Hyakuya orphans, with Yuu as the TeamDad.
* TearfulSmile: In Chapter 90, [[spoiler:as his body is about to explode, Mika smiles at Yuu and sheds tears as he gives him a DyingDeclarationOfLove.]]
* TearsFromAStone: Vampires are not able to cry, but Mika has cried because of Yuu quite a few times. The most notable instances include when he comes back to the vampire city after reuniting with Yuu in episode 12, and after drinking Yuu's blood in episode 22.
* TearsOfRemorse: In Chapter 115, Mika cries as he tells Yuu how much he regrets to have lead the other orphans to their deaths when he fell into Ferid's trap [[spoiler:and even begs him to let Guren sacrifice him so the orphans can come back to life]].
* ThinkHappyThoughts: In order to keep himself and his family happy, when he was younger Mika preferred to look on the bright side and find happiness in the little things.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Even though he hates humans, Mika tries his best to avoid killing them, even when humans try to kill him; he'll only kill a human if it's necessary, [[spoiler:like when he reluctantly killed Aiko in a MercyKill and when he stabbed Guren's chest for attacking him. Also, despite assuming that Shinoa is involved in experimenting on Yuu, Mika refused to allow Yuu to kill her while Yuu was in the Seraph mode.]] This trope is averted when it comes to vampires as Mika has been shown to be okay with killing them.
* TimeAbyss: [[spoiler:Same as Yuu, Mika's original self was created by Sika Madu all the way back to the Age of Dinosaurs.]]
* TokenMinority: Goes both way. As a fellow orphan in Hyakuya Orphanage, he's the only one who's [[ButNotTooForeign not fully Japanese]], which is made even more clear by how only he has bright blonde hair while the others have various shades of brunet. As a vampire, he's the only one to not be fully Western, as only he has a Japanese surname.
* TokenNonHuman: He eventually joins the Shinoa Squad, becoming the only vampire in a team of humans.
* TomatoInTheMirror: In chapter 130, [[spoiler:Yuu and Mika fully remember their first lives, discovering that Mika is actually the homunculus that the angel Mikaela (Yuu's original self) named and kept by his side all the time. When Mikaela reincarnated as a human, he asked the homunculus to enter his lifeless angel body to trick Sika Madu and make him think Mikaela was still dead, resulting in the homunculus taking the name of Mika and constructing a personality that was a perfect copy of Yuu/Mikaela.]]
* TooGoodToBeTrue: When trapped in a [[LotusEaterMachine world of his desires]] [[spoiler:by his own demon self]], Mika quickly figures out it's all an illusion because he knows a world where the Hyakuya orphans are alive and he can live a peaceful domestic life with Yuu just isn't possible.
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: Mika's attitude lightens up a lot after [[spoiler:he and Yuu discover that it's Yuu, and not Mika, who is the reincarnation of the angel Mikaela]]. He starts smiling more, makes jokes with Yuu, and acts more like his upbeat and optimistic childhood self. The change makes sense mainly because now [[spoiler:Yuu is the one who needs to be saved and not him, so he has a proper purpose and reason to oppose the rest of the world, compared to before when he was willing to die to save Yuu and their fellow orphans. So essentially his and Yuu's positions have completely swapped.]]
* TookALevelInCynic: He used to be far more idealistic and cheerful, but now is jaded and bitter. Understandably so after all the suffering he has been through and the terrible things he has seen.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Back when he was human, he loved curry, but after becoming a vampire, he only enjoys Yuu's blood.
* TrustPassword: When Mika interrogates Aihara Aiko about Yuu's whereabouts, she doesn't reveal it, saying that she won't betray her comrades. However, after he gets pissed off at that and shouts at her that they are not [[AffectionateNickname "Yuu-chan"]]'s comrades, she gets surprised, then proceeds to give his partners red herrings, but him the true location of Yuu. When he asks her why, she replies that she might be able to trust a guy who call Yuu "Yuu-''chan''".
* UndyingLoyalty: He leaves the vampires' side so easily because his loyalty is placed first and foremost to Yuu only.
* UnkemptBeauty: He has MessyHair that does nothing to detract from his pretty looks.
* UnwantedRescue: [[spoiler:When Guren reveals his plan to resurrect the dead requires Mika to be sacrificed, Mika is all for it since he only wants the Hyakuya orphans to come back to life, even at the cost of his own life. However, Yuu strongly opposes to Guren's plan because he doesn't want to let Mika die and runs away with Mika to protect him from Guren, all while ignoring Mika's protests against being saved.]]
* UnwittingTestSubject: He was used for human experiments relating the Seraph of the End along with Yuu and the other Hyakuya orphans. Mika just didn't remember it because they erased his memories several times.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: He starts off as a happy-go-lucky if not also a bit mischievous child who smiles often and is very expressive. Then Ferid kills most of his fellow orphans, Krul forces him to become a vampire, and he gets separated from Yuu for years. When he's seen again as a teenager, his emotions dulled significantly and he doesn't really care about anyone but Yuu, but he's still a good person at heart.
* VirtuousCharacterCopy: To Ryo Asuka, since the author admits to have taken inspiration from ''Franchise/{{Devilman}}''. Like Ryo, Mika is the black-haired protagonist's blond childhood friend who is obsessively protective of him. However, Ryo was a BigBadFriend who was ultimately responsible for destroying everything Akira ever loved, whereas Mika truly wishes for nothing but Yuu to be safe and happy, even repeatedly sacrificing himself for Yuu's sake.
* VoluntaryVampireVictim: As a child, Mika willingly let the Progenitor Ferid drink his blood directly as part of a deal to get money and food for the other orphans.
* WarmBloodbagsAreEverywhere: As time goes by, Mika becomes more and more desperate to control his thirst for human blood. He still adamantly refuses to give in to his thirst, no matter how much his body craves human blood. He opts to drink Krul's blood instead [[spoiler: (which has progressively become less effective in quenching his thirst)]] because he doesn't want to lose the last remnant of his humanity and become a true immortal vampire (or a complete monster, in his own words). [[spoiler: In Chapter 36 (Episode 22), after some urging and persuasion from Yuu, he finally gives in to his thirst, drinks Yuu's blood, and turns into a true vampire.]]
* WhatBeautifulEyes: Mikaela's blue eyes and golden hair are commented on by Ferid as being to his liking when basically [[HoYay hitting on him.]]
* WhenHeSmiles: In the present, Mika only smiles for real when he's thinking about Yuu or being around Yuu. His smile at those moments is always gorgeous.
* WorthLivingFor: Mika's reason to endure his bloodthirst and keep living as a "filthy vampire" is to meet Yuu again.
* YouLeaveHimAlone: He has said this in a variety of ways more than once. Mika just wants the humans to stop using Yuu and gets aggressive to any vampire who threaten to harm Yuu.
* YouShallNotPass: He pushes Yuu away in the first chapter so that Yuu can escape before other vampires come to kill them.

!Guren Squad (WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD)
[[folder:As a Group]]
* BackFromTheDead: In chapter 47, it is revealed that [[spoiler:all the members of the squad aside from Guren died 8 years ago, just before the Apocalypse happened, but were revived by Guren using the Seraph of the End power at the cost of 90% of humanity.]]
* DeathAmnesia: [[spoiler:None of Guren's teammates have any recollection of their deaths and resurrections.]]
* FireForgedFriends: The prequel series shows how Guren and his squad became TrueCompanions as they got involved in the conflict between the Hīragi family and the Hyakuya, making them overcome life-or-death situations together.
* LivingOnBorrowedTime: [[spoiler:As per the repercussions of being BackFromTheDead, all of Guren's teammates can only be revived for ten years, having only two left, and if they know the truth, they will crumble to dust.]]
* TownGirls: The three women in the team are the feminine and sweet Sayuri (Femme), the tough and tomboyish Mito (Butch), and the stoic and quiet Shigure (Neither).

Guren is a Lieutenant Colonel of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and the leader of the Vampire Extermination Unit's Moon Demon Company. He is also the squad leader of the Guren Squad.

He is the main protagonist of the prequel stories ''Seraph of the End: Guren Ichinose: Catastrophe at Sixteen'' and ''Seraph of the End: Guren Ichinose: Resurrection at Nineteen'' light novel series. Furthermore, he is an important character who plays a crucial role within the sequel story ''Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign'' manga series that takes place eight years later.
----
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: [[spoiler:Guren caused the apocalypse to save his own friends who had been killed by Mahiru. Not being able to bear living without his comrades, Guren resurrected Shinya, Sayuri, Shigure, Norito and Mito, giving them ten years more to live in exchange for the lives of 90% of humanity.]]
* AmbiguouslyBi: It's clear that Mahiru is the only woman for him, but at the present, he dislikes her demon side (who is now the only thing left of her after the demon side [[SplitPersonalityTakeOver consumed Mahiru's original personality]]), and doesn't seem to mind [[AmbiguouslyGay Shinya]] flirting with him.
* BadassBookworm: He's very intelligent as well as skilled in battle.
* TheBait: Kureto always uses Guren as a decoy in his grand strategies, which often puts him in extreme danger.
* BeneathTheMask: His polite speech pattern and unassuming behavior back in high school were all part of his loser wimp act, given that his true personality is someone who swears like a sailor and is rather disrespectful.
* BrokenAce: He's grown to be very skilled in various aspects of combat, but his mental state isn't as flawless as his talents in battle.
* BrokenPedestal: Yuu is grateful to Guren for taking him in after he lost his adoptive family, training him to fight vampires, and introducing him to the Shinoa Squad so he could gain a new family to protect. However, their relationship turns sour after [[spoiler:Yuu pressures to Guren admit he orchestrated the murder of the other Hyakuya orphans, all for the sake of using Yuu and sacrificing Mika to resurrect the 90% of humanity that he killed when he resurrected his own friends. Against Guren's expectations, Yuu makes clear he will ''not'' allow Mika to be sacrificed and deserts Guren's side. After rebelling against him, Yuu declares he's ready to kill Guren if he keeps trying to take Mika from him.]]
* BullyMagnet: The amount of abuse he endured in his time at First Shibuya High is astonishing.
* ByronicHero: Despite his nonchalant and grumpy attitude and his prodigious combat skills, he's just a broken man who is burned by many sins and failures.
* ChickMagnet: Girls are drawn to him like flies to honey. Besides Mahiru, all the girls of his squad have a crush on him.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Guren and Mahiru fell in love with each other when they were five years old. After 10 years of separation, their feelings didn't change, but they couldn't become a couple because of Mahiru's family and transformation into a demon.
* TheChessmaster: [[spoiler:For the past four years, Guren has manipulated Yuu, Mika and pretty much everyone associated with them as his pawns for his master plan to resurrect the dead. He and Mahiru conspired with Ferid and Krul to separate Yuu from Mika for four years, turn Mika into a vampire, and kill the other orphans to use their corpses as leverage to force Yuu and Mika to cooperate with him. Guren then kills Mika and arranges for Yuu to make Mika into his new Cursed Gear. The only step left is to sacrifice the lives of Mika and the vampires. Just as Guren thought he had everyone under his complete control, however, his plan falls apart when Yuu rebels against him because Yuu'll never let him kill Mika to resurrect the dead.]]
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: He has betrayed his closest friends and allies at least once in every major arc. [[spoiler:This comes to a head when Yuu claims to forgive Guren for turning Mika into a demon and arranging the murder of his fellow orphans, but Guren goes and once again backstabs him by using the corpses of the orphans and the Shinoa Squad's family members to force Yuu into giving up Mika so Guren can sacrifice the latter to bring back all the people he has killed in the past eight years to erase his own guilt. Yuu then decides he had enough of dealing with Guren's treachery and becomes his number 1 enemy.]]
* ColonelBadass: He is a Lieutenant Colonel in the JIDA and he wields a Black Demon Series Cursed Gear. [[spoiler: He was shown to be able to go toe-to-toe with Mikaela (who himself is a formidable opponent).]]
* CombatPragmatist: Even though he is strong, he is well aware of the fact that most vampire nobles are stronger and will not hesitate to use dirty tricks in battle.
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: He's actually the protagonist of the prequel, but he fits otherwise. Whereas Yuu is impulsive, reckless and lets his emotions drive all of his actions, Guren is much more calculating, rational and pragmatic because he knows he must plan well his moves to not let the Hīragi family control him.
* DarkSecret: He is [[spoiler: technically the cause of the apocalypse, as he resurrected Shinya and his squad and was given divine punishment. To add to this, he cannot tell them that he did this, or they will crumble to dust; it also doesn't help that they're LivingOnBorrowedTime and only have two years left to live.]]
* DemonicPossession: Although he thinks he has a handle on it, Mahiru has possessed him several times in the past. In fact, [[spoiler: she's been using his body to contact Ferid for her own agenda.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: He fell into despair on the day of the apocalypse [[spoiler:when Mahiru killed all of his friends in front of him. He broke so badly that he chose to kill nearly all humans on Earth to bring his friends back for ten years.]]
* {{Determinator}}: His subordinates look up to him for his refusal to give up even when all odds are against him.
* EasilyForgiven: In Chapter 112, [[spoiler:Yuu finally forces Guren to admit that he arranged for Ferid to kill the rest of the Hyakuya orphans. While shocked, Yuu quickly claims to forgive Guren for all the bad things he has done, just because they're "family" and wants to trust him. However, this turns out to be a ruse to get Guren to be honest about his plan to resurrect the dead and once Guren reveals his plan needs Mika to become a sacrifice, Yuu immediately turns against him and declares he'll kill Guren if he continues to come after him and Mika.]]
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: [[ChickMagnet Girls are attracted to Guren like bees to honey]] and [[AmbiguouslyGay Shinya has also been known to tease and flirt with him.]]
* FailureHero: In the prequel, Guren fails to save everyone he cared about and the world at the end. He can't stop his father's execution, his childhood crush Mahiru becomes corrupted by her demon side and ends up sealed inside his sword, and [[spoiler:he has to watch Mahiru brutally kill all his friends. After falling into despair, Guren breaks and starts the ritual that revives his friends in exchange for the lives of 90% of humanity, bringing the apocalypse he was trying to stop.]]
* FailureIsTheOnlyOption: [[spoiler: His whole plan based on turning Mika, who he considers to be Sika Madu's son Mikaela, into a demon and sacrifice him in order to bring everyone back to life, but this plan was doomed from the beginning. For starters, there was no way that Yuu would ever allow this, and Guren's past actions ensured that Yuu would have the power of two demons on his side (Mika and Asuramaru), which makes him stronger than the rest of the squad combined besides Krul Tepes. And then it's revealed that Mika isn't Mikaela to begin with, ''[[MistakenIdentity Yuu is]]'', meaning that he not only turned Mika into a demon for nothing, but was even going to kill the wrong person. And while he might have convinced the rest to sacrifice Mika, chances of them agreeing to sacrifice Yuu are low, [[{{Yandere}} Shinoa most of all]].]]
* AFatherToHisMen: To say that he cares about his followers and comrades is an understatement. [[spoiler: He is willing to cause an apocalypse for the sake of his fallen friends by using the Seraph of the End to revive them.]]
* FormalCharactersUseKeigo: {{Subverted|Trope}}. When he was a teenager, to behave as expected of the Ichinose heir, Guren had the habit to speak politely around everyone except his close friends and family. This was part of his meek ExtremeDoormat act to hide his true power and eventually dropped it when there was no need to hide it anymore.
* FriendshipDenial: In the prequel, he tries to deny he's friends with Shinya and the others, but starts to accept it since clinging on to friendship helps him resist his demon's corruption.
* GenreSavvy: [[ThePowerOfFriendship He insists on Yu making friends]]. It works. However, the same [[WrongGenreSavvy cannot be said]] to his idea of teaching Shinoa the same thing when it comes to leading her comrades as while logically, this is a good thing since it made her a better leader to her squad, sooner or later, [[spoiler: thanks to her origins, having her grow more and more attached to her friends could potentially ''endanger'' her thanks to the demon inside of her. [[TheCorrupter Combined with Mahiru's influence over Guren and her excitement at seeing Shinoa's progress...]]]]
* GoodIsNotNice: Even though he's on the main heroes' side, he can be especially rude.
* HairTriggerTemper: He has no patience for Yu's stupidity, [[CantLiveWithThemCantLiveWithoutThem although in truth, he actually likes Yu.]]
* HeartbrokenBadass: He can fight some of the strongest vampires in the series, but he still regrets not being able to save his childhood crush from having her personality corrupted by a demon.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Just like Yu, his Cursed Gear is a katana.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** He accuses Krul of betraying her kind. Guren is, perhaps, the last person in the entire plot to have the right to criticize anyone for their lack of loyalty, considering that both he and Mahiru constantly manipulated, used and backstabbed others throughout the story.
** He admonishes Yuu for [[spoiler:choosing to keep trying to resurrect Mika instead of allowing Mika to become the sacrifice that'll resurrect the humans who died in the past eight years]]. Guren has no right to judge Yuu when [[spoiler:he was responsible for causing the virus that killed nearly all of humanity, all because he wanted to resurrect his dead friends for only ten years and he decided his own loved ones were more important than the lives of everyone else in the world.]]
* IgnoreTheFanservice: In the prequel, Guren ignored Sayuri as she walked around his apartment in nothing but a ModestyTowel, merely telling her to get dressed so she wouldn't catch a cold.
* IHaveYourWife: [[spoiler:He planned the murders of the Hyakuya orphans and Yoichi's sister, and even kills Kimizuki's sister himself, so that he can keep their corpses in storage and use them to leave the Shinoa Squad no choice but to cooperate with his plan to resurrect 90% of humanity. The strategy seems to work for everyone except for Yuu, since Guren's plan requires Mika to be sacrificed and Yuu will ''never'' stand for that.]]
* InsecureLoveInterest: Part of the reason why he never reciprocated the romantic affections of Sayuri, Shigure and Mito is that he believes they deserve better than the head of a low branch family that's looked down by everyone.
* ItsAllMyFault: He takes responsibility for any failures or deaths of the people under his command.
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: As the series goes on, Guren's actions go from morally ambiguous to outright villainous. [[spoiler:He's revealed to be the one who killed 90% of humanity to resurrect his own friends and while he claims he plans to resurrect the dead, his methods are extremely shady. Later on, he kills Kimizuki's sister and then Mika to further his own plans. After he has Yuu make the demon Mika into his new Cursed Gear, Yuu forces Guren to reveal he conspired with Ferid to kill most of the Hyakuya orphans, and Guren finally demands Yuu to give up on Mika because the latter is the sacrifice needed to bring the dead back to life. After Yuu rebels against him to protect Mika, Guren will do anything to capture Yuu and Mika, and that includes endangering innocent lives.]]
* KungFuWizard: This is much more emphasized in the Catastrophe light novels, where everyone practiced sorcery and martial arts at First Shibuya High.
* TheLeader: He leads Guren Squad and all the members are loyal to him.
* LikeAGodToMe: {{Invoked|Trope}} with Yuu. At one point, Guren outright tells Yuu that he should see him as his God because he's his military superior, lifesaver ''and'' father figure. Yuu [[SubvertedTrope doesn't like the sound of it]], but he does consider Guren a part of his FamilyOfChoice [[spoiler:until Guren tries to resurrect the 90% of humanity that he killed eight years ago by making Mika into a sacrifice, which leads Yuu to finally rebel against him.]]
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: Guren's father was much more compliant and apologetic toward Hīragi-dominated society. Guren had no intention of doing the same and from an early age planned on overthrowing the Hīragis.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Shinya's life was empty and miserable ever since his parents sold him as a potential fiancé for Mahiru. He only lived with the goal of surviving each day by doing what the Hīragi family wanted of him, until he met Guren who became the only person who made him feel true joy. Shinya even says that he considers Guren his reason for living.
* LoserProtagonist: In the prequel series, Guren is treated like human garbage by everyone at the First Shibuya High School because the Ichinose family is a very low branch of the Order of the Imperial Demons. The Hīragi family oppressed the Ichinose because of a feud centuries ago and promoted other branch families to ostracize the Ichinose and their followers.
* LoveAtFirstSight: He fell in love with Mahiru at first sight when they were children.
* MagneticHero: Originally, Guren had the intention of overthrowing the Hīragi family on his own without involving anyone. However, he ended up attracting a group of TrueCompanions that became his squad. Guren wasn't happy about having teammates that could get hurt at first, but he still cares about them.
* MarriedToTheJob: As the current head of the Order of the Imperial Moon and the Ichinose clan, it shouldn't be a surprise that he doesn't have much space for a personal life.
* MartyrWithoutACause: Guren goes to ridiculous points in order to save his friends, putting his own life at risk half the time [[spoiler: and going as far as to provoke the Apocalypse by reviving his friends with the forbidden taboo, he also went as far as to turn into a Namanari, and then a full demon in order to protect his friends and "save the entire world"]].
* TheMenFirst: His general attitude in battle is to protect his soldiers. This makes sense because of the nature of most of his missions: he's usually there to cause a commotion and distract the vampires long enough for the main army to act.
* MyGreatestFailure:
** He failed to save his childhood crush Mahiru from transforming into a demon and he laments it to this day.
** [[spoiler: Letting his squad die]] hit him hard. To make it ''way worse'', [[spoiler:90% of humanity died because Guren wished to bring his squad back to life]].
* NotSoAboveItAll: Has a habit of resorting to loud arguing and violence when either [[HotBlooded Yu]] or [[{{Troll}} Shinoa]] get on his nerves.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He pretended to be incompetent in high school because he didn't want to let the Hīragis know his true power. The illusion didn't last long.
* PapaWolf: He sees his squad members and comrades as part of his family. Any attempts to harm them will result in a very angry backlash from him.
* ParentalHypocrisy: Guren's always telling Yu to get along better with his friends when he himself will sooner die than admit out loud that he cares about his friends. He also tells him to respect his superiors when he himself is rather well known for being disrespectful, to the point that Shinya has to stay back at meetings to smooth out any ruffled feathers.
* ParentalSubstitute: To Yūichirō. He was the one who take care of and train him after rescuing him from Sanguinem.
* PetTheDog: Literally patting Yu on the head in some rare SoProudOfYou moments.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: Highly values this and encourages Yu to open up his feelings and make friends.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: He's a lieutenant colonel and is always kicking someone's ass.
* SeeksAnothersResurrection: [[spoiler:His real goal is correcting his biggest mistake from eight years ago and bring back to life the humans that he killed when he brought his friends back to life.]]
* SingleTargetSexuality: He has never been with anyone besides Mahiru, and on his page in the guidebook, the answer to the question of what he looks for in the opposite sex is simply "Mahiru Hiragi."
* SirSwearsALot: He tends to swear, particularly when pissed off.
* SinsOfOurFathers: The reason for his abuse from the Hiragi family and other clans is because [[spoiler:over 500 years ago, the Ichinose clan deserted from the Order of the Imperial Demons/Hiragi clan and formed the Order of the Imperial Moon. Thus, the two families' relationships have been strained ever since.]]
* SmugSnake: [[spoiler:For eight years, Guren carefully manipulated Yuu's entire life and personal relationships, so that Yuu would become nothing but his obedient lapdog that would give up Mika as a sacrifice without much of a fight since Guren arranged him to make more friends to replace Mika. Just when he thinks his plan will come to fruition, Guren is shocked to discover Yuu will '''not''' give up Mika for anything in the world, and doesn't hesitate to ditch Guren and the Shinoa Squad when they turn against him and Mika. Guren can only become pissed at seeing his plan get completely ruined because he overestimated his efforts to control Yuu and really thought he could force him to choose humanity over Mika.]]
* SoProudOfYou: He acts like a proud father whenever Yu talks about the importance of friends and family like Guren taught him.
* SourOutsideSadInside: Despite his bluster, Guren is burdened by a lot of grief and failures.
* SplitPersonalityTakeover: In Chapter 38, he is revealed to be a Namanari; a human halfway becoming a demon, with two personalities. Other than his normal personality, Guren also possess a perfectionist and extremely ruthless personality that is implied to surface due to his bond with his Cursed Gear's Demon (Mahiru).
* StarCrossedLovers: With Mahiru. Guren's family was oppressed by Mahiru's family because of a feud from the past, so Guren and Mahiru were forbidden from even seeing each other for ten years. Then Mahiru's longing for Guren caused her to be corrupted by her inner demon and now they can only be together due to Mahiru being sealed inside Guren's sword.
* SupportingLeader: He has a higher authority than anyone in Yuu's group and acts as their mentor, but the protagonist is still Yuu.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He's pretty tall, good-looking and is surely very dark.
* TeamDad: He plays the part of a somewhat gruff, but caring father figure to Yuu and his group. Especially important because so many of the characters are orphans or have other [[DarkAndTroubledPast issues]].
* TearsOfRemorse: In Chapter 99, Guren sheds tears as he finally expresses his regret over [[spoiler:resurrecting his friends at the cost of killing 90% of humanity, even claiming he should have died together with Shinya before their powers started to turn them into demons.]]
* TookALevelInJerkass: In his younger days, Guren was cold and rude to even those who are friendly with him, but [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold he wouldn't hesitate to save their lives when they were in danger]], which is why his friends stuck with him no matter what. In the present, however, he's more of a plain ol' {{Jerkass}} who is willing to manipulate and backstab those he calls his "comrades" and "family" to use them as his pawns for his own shady plans.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: His favorite food is curry. In the prequel, he asks Sayuri to make curry for dinner every day.
* TraumaCongaLine: His teen years is basically one horrible event after another.
* {{Tsundere}}: Particularly in the prequel, Guren is aloof and rude to his teammates, but he's only trying to keep his distance so they will be exposed to as little danger as possible.
* TheUnfettered: For the past eight years, Guren has been trying to undo his biggest mistake [[spoiler:of killing 90% of humanity to resurrect his friends]] and is so obsessed with succeeding, that he has manipulated, exploited, betrayed and hurt pretty much everyone he knows.
* UnholyMatrimony: With Mahiru. Both have turned themselves into traitorous and cruel demons as they work together in a big master plan to [[spoiler:ruin Shikama Dōji's plan and resurrect 90% humanity in exchange for the lives of the vampires and Mika. Eventually, this even turns them into some of Yuu and Mika's main enemies.]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Shinya. They butt heads often, but are each other's dearest friends.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Guren really thinks he's saving the world by [[spoiler:planning to resurrect 90% of humanity]], but he has manipulated, betrayed and killed tons of people for the sake of his goal.
* WillfullyWeak: At the start of the prequel, Guren pretends to be the weakling the "rat" of the Ichinose successor is expected to be so the Hīragi family don't discover his true potential and take precaution against his planned rebellion. He took attacks he could have easily dodged on purpose so no one would get suspicious of his hidden power. The Hīragi family had something of a history of hazing those of the Ichinose and Guren didn't want to show the Hīragi anything about his family's abilities so he decided to quietly endure despite being stronger than his tormentors.
* WithUsOrAgainstUs: In chapter 114, Guren forces [[spoiler:Yuu]] to choose between cooperating with his plan to [[spoiler:resurrect humanity, which requires Mika to become a sacrifice]], or turn himself into his and the Shinoa Squad's enemy if he chooses [[spoiler:Mika]] over them. [[spoiler:Yuu immediately chooses to save Mika and runs away with him, leading Guren to order the squad to capture Yuu. Yuu does intend to save both Mika ''and'' humanity, but still refuses to cooperate with Guren because he knows Guren is dead set on sacrificing Mika with no interest in considering a possible alternative option.]]
* AWolfInSheepsClothing: He tried to keep his abilities hidden while under the watch of the Hīragis.
* TheWorfEffect: Guren gets beat up the most by far out of the recurring characters, even though he is one of the strongest human fighters.
* WouldHurtAChild: He kills [[spoiler:Kimizuki's kid sister in cold blood and keeps her body as leverage, all in order to force Kimizuki to agree with his plan to resurrect the dead.]] He also uses a child as a HumanShield against [[spoiler:Yuu]] during their fight in Ikebukuro.

She is a main character in the ''Seraph of the End: Guren Ichinose: Catastrophe at Sixteen'' light novel series.
----
* ActionGirl: Quite required as a member of the prestigious Jūjō family. It truly shows during her match with Shigure, and when fighting with vampires.
* BareFistedMonk: Unlike other characters who all wield Cursed Gears or use spells, Mito specializes in hand-to-hand close combat.
* CompassionateCritic: She's harsh when criticizing the rookies' careless behavior, but does it because she knows said carelessness could get them killed in the battlefield.
* CovertPervert: She doesn't look too opposed to the idea of putting on a swimsuit if Guren wants to see her in it.
* DefeatMeansRespect: Back in high school, Mito and Shigure fought in a duel. While Mito was officially the winner, she thought Shigure would have killed her if it has been a duel to the death and was so impressed by Shigure's skill that she asked her to become her retainer.

* HopelessSuitor: She has some feelings for Guren, but he won't ever consider anyone but Mahiru as a lover.

* MagicEnhancement: She excels in spellcast techniques that enhance her physical ability.
* MarkOfTheSupernatural: The members of her family are [[PeopleOfHairColor recognized for their red hair]]. According to legend, an ancestor of the family, Tohito Jūjō, single-handedly defeated a powerful demon. However, a curse was placed on the bloodline. Since then, all Jūjō descendants were born with red hair.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Mito hails from the Jūjō clan, which is known for physical strength. Because her body is slight, she compensates with magic.
* PowerFist: Her Cursed Gear Kagutsuchi takes the form of two black gauntlets with glowing green orbs in the middle of each. The power that is released when she punches is enough to hurt and/or kill a common vampire.
* RebelliousPrincess: The princess of the Jūjō family with a fiery attitude.
* RescueRomance: She developed a crush on Guren after he saved her life during the attack of the Hyakuya Sect at their high school.

* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She wears trousers normally seen on the male uniform and is more physical in combat than some other girls in the army. However, in the fanbook, one of her likes are things currently popular with girls.
* {{Tsundere}}: She's very short-tempered and abrasive, especially when it comes to interactions with Guren. However, in the guidebook, it's stated that Guren is what she looks for in the opposite sex.
* TsurimeEyes: Her sharp eyes are one of the physical traits that identify her as a {{Tsundere}}.
