A vain, flamboyant and extremely eccentric young man. His Quirk, "Navel Laser", allows him to fire powerful laser beams from his stomach. However, continuous use of this Quirk is liable to give him a stomach ache, and he also needs to wear a special support belt at all times to prevent the laser from "leaking out".
----
* AgentPeacock: As the most flamboyant member of the class and a hero-in-training, he certainly qualifies.
* AntiVillain: [[spoiler:Revealed to be the U.A. traitor, but it's made abundantly clear All For One is forcing him against his will under threat of killing him and his parents. His guilty conscience has been affecting him all series long, and he's ashamed when Izuku confronts him upon learning the truth.]]
* AsideGlance: Especially in the anime. Whenever he is in a group shot, he tends to look directly at the camera.
* AtrociousAlias: He suggested the GratuitousEnglish sentence "I can not stop twinkling" as his hero name, and to his classmates' shock Midnight ''accepted it'', only suggesting he shorten it to "Can't Stop Twinkling."
* AttentionWhore: He loves to hog the spotlight no matter where he shows up.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Although flashy and very powerful, his navel laser has several drawbacks, and can hurt his stomach if used continuously for more than a second. He also needs to wear his belt at all times to prevent it from "leaking" and hurting him as well. [[spoiler:This makes a lot of sense when it's revealed to be a Quirk bestowed upon Aoyama by All For One, using a Quirk your body wasn't built for has been shown to cause drawbacks when in use]].
* BeamSpam: His super move Navel Laser Buffet, which fires several smaller beams from his belt and shoulders.
* BequeathedPower: [[spoiler:He was not born with Navel Laser. It was given to him by All For One as part of a deal his parents made, and was previously a Quirk stolen from someone else.]]
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He mostly provides comic relief and his Quirk is very ridiculous looking, but the ability to fire laser beams still makes him pretty powerful. He also has moments showing surprising awareness.
* BigDamnHeroes: After spending most of the Forest Training Camp Arc hiding in fear, he delivers an attack that saves Tokoyami. [[spoiler:This is given [[MustMakeAmends more context]] with the reveal that he's the [[RegretfulTraitor U.A. traitor]] and the information he passed along lead to Tokoyami being endangered in the first place]].
* BigEgoHiddenDepths: Behind this silly, vain character, there's an insecure young man who is unsure about his place in the world. [[spoiler:The fact that he's a 'fake' hero and being ForcedIntoEvil compounds this]]. He even carves a message into a rock wall with his laser that reads "[[LampshadeHanging Still Waters Run Deep]]" before revealing to Izuku his [[NotSoDifferentRemark similar issues]] with his PowerIncontinence as Izuku's own with handling One For All.
* BishieSparkle: So much that even his beams have those.
* BookDumb: He had the third-lowest score on the midterm, ahead of only Ashido and Kaminari.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: {{Downplayed|Trope}}, but Aoyama can often be found staring (or even winking) directly into the camera, especially during [[FunnyBackgroundEvent group shots or montages]].
* BrokenTears: [[spoiler:Yuga finally breaks apart after carrying out several betrayals that hurt his friends and acquaintances and not being allowed to stop the deception. When his ugly secret gets out, he is a sloppy mess of tears and has a face of utter brokenness.]]
* ButNotTooForeign: He's Japanese but he was born in France, a thing which he likes to play up as his heritage by using GratuitousFrench.
* ButtMonkey: He is often on the receiving end of painful moments like Mineta, Kaminari and Sero.
* CampyCombat: A vain AttentionWhore who likes sprinkling French and English words in his dialogue, and his Quirk "Navel Laser" shoots a sparkling beam out of his belly button.
* ChargedAttack: His new move, "Can't Stop Twinkling: Supernova," allows him to deliver a laser attack much more powerful than usual by charging it for five-seconds.
* ChestBlaster: Or Navel Blaster in this case. He fires his beam from his belly button. His hero costume incorporates mirrors and lenses that allow him to direct it out of spots on his knees and shoulders as well. Deconstructed, as he suffers some health problems due to its placement. He explicitly states that overuse crushes his stomach, most likely due to high recoil going into his gut.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: No one knows what his deal is, not even Creator/KoheiHorikoshi himself.
* ColorMotif: Blue. The "Ao" in his last name means Blue in Japanese, his eyes are Blue and cape in his hero costume is also Blue.
* CombinationAttack: Aoyama uses his super move Navel Saber, with Hagakure using her Quirk to curve the blade. It's first seen to slash through Villain Bots during training, and was developed during their work-study under Yoroi Musha.
* CommonalityConnection: He befriends Midoriya because both their Quirks are ill-suited for their bodies, with One For All causing Midoriya's limbs severe damage before he trains enough, and Navel Laser hurting Aoyama's stomach and leaking out because of his birth defect. [[spoiler: Turns out this is because Aoyama was also born quirkless and had a quirk given to him.]]
* CowardlyLion: During the Forest Training Camp Arc, he hides in the bushes and is absolutely terrified when he discovers he is mere feet away from the villains' rendezvous point. Still when the villains start to escape with two student hostages, he is able to blast the hostage-taker and free at least one student. Considering how outnumbered he was and with two unconscious fellow students, staying quiet was ultimately the better plan.
* TheDandy: Likes bling, trendy fashion, and French cuisine. He is foppish and he has exaggerated French speech mannerisms.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Aoyama was born quirkless, and thus bound to a life of [[FantasticRacism discrimination]] and [[DreamCrushingHandicap disability]]. However, his parents, as a last desperate resort to help him, went to [[BigBad All for One]] in exchange of a quirk from him, which resulted in him becoming an unwilling mole within class 1-A on All for One's behalf.]]
* DemotedToExtra: Despite being playable in the first game of the franchise, Aoyama is not present among the playable cast of ''VideoGame/MyHeroOnesJustice''. He was later added as DLC to its sequel, however.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: [[spoiler: Seems to be his default expression once he is revealed as the UA traitor.]]
* EasilyForgiven: [[spoiler:While everyone is initially distraught to learn that he was TheMole who allowed the attacks at USJ and the training camp, none of them actually hold a grudge over it. They acknowledge his guilt over endangering their lives, and even blame themselves for not noticing his inner turnmoil. This is particularly surprising with Aizawa, who assures Aoyama that he has no intent to expel him, despite previously admitting that he wanted to expel him (and most of the class) for [[AccompliceByInaction simply knowing about]] an unauthorized rescue for Bakugou after he was kidnapped in the training camp attack that Aoyama helped start in the first place.]]
* EatingLunchAlone: Subverted. He's not shunned by anyone, he ''wants'' to eat lunch by himself since he prefers his [[FrenchCuisineIsHaughty fancy and elaborate French meals]] to any other food.
* EffeminateVoice: He speaks with a campy tenor that goes hand-in-hand with his flamboyant persona.
* EverythingsBetterWithSparkles: He has a lot of shiny things in his room, including a disco ball and an ''armor set''.
* EvilCounterpart: [[spoiler:Evil is a strong word, but his upbringing of being Quirkless before being empowered makes him a counterpart to Deku, he would have been what Deku would turn out, had his parents made a deal with All For One.]]
* ExactlyWhatIAimedAt: [[spoiler:While fighting Kunieda as one of the last two heroes standing against him, he keeps firing his Navel Laser despite his support item being damaged. While Kunieda thinks Aoyama's just missing and essentually flailing widely in the face of death, it turns out he was ''actually'' aiming at Hagakure ''behind'' Kunieda, who was gathering all the stray blasts together before blindsiding the villain with a WaveMotionGun at point blank, defeating him in one hit.]]
* FeedTheMole: After finding out that [[spoiler:he's the UA traitor with a direct, if one-sided, communication to All For One,]] Midoriya proposes this trope.
* ForcedIntoEvil: [[spoiler:Chapter 336 reveals that Aoyama is the traitor and TheMole for All For One, and he states that this is because he was born Quirkless and was given a Quirk by the villain in question, which resulted in him and his family becoming his pawns]].
* FrenchCuisineIsHaughty: He likes to eat by himself instead of joining everybody in the cafeteria, and his meals are as fancy as you'd expect. He also enjoys Pont-l'Évêque cheese slices as snacks.
* GratuitousEnglish: He chooses "Can't Stop Twinkling" as his hero name, which sounds very silly to a native English speaker.
* GratuitousForeignLanguage: Alternates between using GratuitousEnglish and GratuitousFrench in his dialogue. It's possibly a result of him coming from a wealthy family, as french culture and language is considered "classy" and refined in Japan.
* HandicappedBadass: Aoyama's Quirk comes with a birth defect that makes it hard to keep the beam from releasing without a support item and also causes him to lose control of his bowels if he fires his blaster for too long. However, his beams are still quite powerful. [[spoiler:This eventually revealed [[SubvertedTrope to just be a cover story]], meant to obscure the fact that, like Izuku, he got his Quirk recently, and his body wasn't given the same level of preparation and training All Might had Izuku go through in order to withstand One For All's usage]].
* HeroicRROD: Can't fire his blaster too much or it'll put a strain on his stomach.
* HeroicSacrifice: Attempts to use himself as bait by firing his laser straight up into the sky to draw everyone's attention during the Provisional Hero License Exam Arc so Ida can run away after they're heavily outnumbered. Luckily, [[BigDamnHeroes the remaining members of the class all converge on the laser to help]].
* HiddenDepths: Despite his evident lack of social skills, he's shown himself to be very intuitive of other people, apparently picking up on Uraraka's crush on Midoriya before anyone else did, as well as the fact that he's similar to Midoriya in that their powers are incompatible with their bodies. [[spoiler: That was all before TheReveal that he is the [[TheMole U.A. Traitor]] and why he ended up having that role.]]
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: It's implied that his overblown narcissism may be an act he puts on while in public. He states that he's always wanted to be equals with the rest of the class during the provisional hero license exam, prompting [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre Ida to tell him that he already is]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's a {{Narcissist}} to the third degree, but deep down he does care about his fellow classmates.
* KnightInShiningArmor: His costume is supposed to invoke this imagery, and looks more like what a classic fantasy knight would wear, as opposed to Ida whose knight-themed hero costume looks more modernized and sci-fi-styled.
* LaserBlade: Following his winter internship, he gains the ability to form a sword out of his navel laser, which, while still causing him incredible pain from holding it, allows light-manipulation Quirk-users to more easily control it in a combo move.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssrpoeByb6g&feature=youtu.be&list=PLEQjOG7DtEQHzWS2q4btHlyc3DbN_U7iK "Yuga Aoyama"]], aptly named, is a remix of "Just Another Hero" but with a much more light feel to it, while keeping the original piece's intensity, which makes complete sense taking into account his HiddenDepths.
* LightEmUp: He fires lasers from his navel. He also uses himself as [[FantasticLightSource an unorthodox but very effective torch]] to help a rival student looking in dark places for civilians in the Provisional License Exam and becomes a walking light show during the Culture Festival.
* MakingASpectacleOfYourself: His Hero costume includes very large, red sunglasses shaped like an angel's wings, in keeping with his flamboyant design.
* MeaningfulName:
** The two kanji characters that make up his first name mean "excellent, superior" (優 ''yu'') and "elegant, graceful, refined" (雅 ''ga''). His surname also contains the kanji for "mountain" in it, because his self-importance is as high as a mountain.
** His Quirk's name and function, Navel Laser, is quite fitting, because being TheDandy, he's quite fond of [[{{Pun}} navel-gazing]].
** His hero name is also this [[spoiler: as {{Foreshadowing}} of [[TheMole his role]]. He wants someone to stop him from that horrible role yet he isn't really noticed until TheReveal.]]
* MediumAwareness: Implied -- he's frequently seen mugging at the camera, usually in group shots, with the obvious implication being that he [[{{Narcissist}} wants the viewers to focus on him]].
* MysteriousWatcher: Ever since the end of the Internship Arc, Aoyama has been watching Midoriya in his sleep from the window and generally invading his personal space. That is because he has no social skills. Midoriya understands him and becomes his only friend.
* {{Narcissist}}: As revealed in his profile, his favorite thing is himself. His dorm room has a large portrait of himself as well as an entire set of mirrors of different sizes.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: After the Internship Arc, Aoyama starts doing things like hand feeding and getting uncomfortably close to Midoriya, terrifying him.
* NoSocialSkills: Aoyama doesn't seem to have any close friends, and is shown to stay behind by himself in the classroom during lunchtime. It's not until after the Internship Arc that he starts coming out of his shell, wanting to befriend Midoriya, because, from his perspective, they are the same (two people with Quirks their bodies can't properly control). However, instead of simply approaching him and asking to be his friend, he went about it in ways that frightened Midoriya, from watching him sleep to leaving vague messages outside his window.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: It's implied [[spoiler: after his reveal as the UA traitor that he was deliberately flunking exams and trying to get himself expelled to escape being TrappedInVillainy]].
* OddFriendship: He develops one with [[OnlyFriend Midoriya]] after he opens up about his disorder.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** After the events with the Shie Hassaikai, Aoyama starts to behave really unusually, even for him, and Midoriya picks up on it. Then, while Midoriya sleeps, Aoyama peers in from outside his window with a leering gaze, and we see the first glimpse of his true nature. Thankfully, the next chapter explains that it was just a case of Aoyama having NoSocialSkills as well as an interest in Izuku for their shared issues with [[PowerIncontinence properly handling their Quirks]] [[spoiler:...[[DoubleSubverted only for Chapter 336]] to reveal that he's the actual U.A. traitor and has been suffering from both his [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone suppressed guilt]] towards his classmates and his inability to [[CanNotSpitItOut admit his culpability]], leading him to hint at it in indirect ways]].
** He's a PerpetualSmiler, meaning that when he actually does stop, he's either really scared, surprised, or serious.
** His facial features are [[NonStandardCharacterDesign subtly more cartoony and undefined]] compared to some of his other, more realistically shaded classmates, which helps highlight his nature as the PluckyComicRelief amongst the class. Accordingly the few times he's seen drawn in line with them are when things have gotten deadly serious for him, such as him being scant feet away from [[SerialKiller Dabi]] and on his own during the hideout raid, with only a few bushes between himself and a painful demise. [[spoiler:The full-page WhamShot of his sobbing face revealing him as the U.A. traitor has him drawn as his most realistic yet, to highlight how broken Aoyama is over his betrayal]].
* PerpetualSmiler: His facial expression rarely changes from a half-lidded, closed smile, even when he speaks.
* PersonalityPowers: His Quirk, "Navel Laser", goes hand-in-hand with him being a mirror-vain dandy who mostly cares about himself (also known as ''navel-gazing''). The sparkling beams he fires using it are as flashy as he is.
* PottyFailure: The disgusting result if Aoyama overuses his Navel Laser, since it can crush his stomach and make him lose control of his bowels.
* PowerCrutch: His belt prevents his navel laser from leaking out and harming him and allows it to function as a proper superpower.
* PowerIncontinence: Because of a birth defect, Aoyama's beams can involuntarily leak out from his navel, which explains why he needs to wear a [[ContainmentClothing special belt]] all the time. On top of that, the way he suffers leakage causes ''actual'' incontinence, since he loses control of his bowels. [[spoiler:His issues with controlling the power properly make more sense when it's revealed that he himself was originally Quirkless, meaning he was using a Quirk his body was never built for]].
* PrettyBoy: Parodied. He has glossy blonde hair, thin eyebrows, glinting eyes, prominent eyelashes, and a slender build. His design is purposefully unusual as it makes him much more disturbing when he's not in his over the top persona, best demonstrated by his blank stare as he watches Midoriya sleep through his dorm room window at night.
* PutOnABus: Baring a cameo in the credits, he, Ojiro, and Koda are the only members of Class 1-A who don't appear in ''Anime/MyHeroAcademiaTwoHeroes''.
* RealMenCook: Those fancy French-style meals he eats for lunch? According to the promotional booklet for ''World Heroes' Mission'', he prepares them himself.
* RecoilBoost: Can propel himself by firing his beam at the opposite direction he wants to go. His first attempt of this [[AwesomeButImpractical isn't very successful]], as he runs out of steam half-way down the running track and has to pick himself up and fire again, coming in behind Mina, who just [[BoringButPractical ran the course normally]].
* RegretfulTraitor: [[spoiler: He only obeyed All-For-One's orders to infiltrate U.A. under threat of death and after connecting to the rest of class he becomes a complete emotional wreck. Notably, when Midoriya and Hagakure overhear and confront him and his family discussing his latest orders his parents hastily try to deny the accusation while Aoyama immediately confesses]].
* RunningGag: It goes hand-in-hand with his narcissism. Whenever he starts to brag or speak highly of himself, he either gets interrupted, mainly by Ashido, or just outright ignored.
* SadClown: Aoyama tends to go out of his way to be goofy and an AttentionWhore, but he's actually insecure about the fact that his Quirk actively harms him and he has to wear a belt to control it at all. [[spoiler: With the reveal that he is the [[TheMole U.A. Traitor]], [[ExaggeratedTrope this really shot up]].]]
* SayItWithHearts: In his case, stars, to showcase his perfect grandiosity. ★
* ScreamsLikeALittleGirl: He lets out some pretty campy screams and whines when training his Quirk.
* ASharedSuffering: Aoyama sees Midoriya as a kindred spirit and [[NoSocialSkills tries]] to connect with him due to them both possessing powerful quirks that damage their bodies. [[spoiler: It's also implied that he believed that Midoriya was another mole sent by All-For-One for this reason and sympathized with him as he himself was [[RegretfulTraitor utterly miserable in this task]]]].
* ShipperOnDeck: He seems to be one for Midoriya and Uraraka, seeing how the latter often mentions him during dire situations. This unknowingly causes Uraraka to realize her feelings for Midoriya and often become nervous whenever she is close to him.
* ShoutOut: He's basically a flamboyant version of {{ComicBook/Cyclops}}, but with his power coming out from his navel instead of his eyes.
* SleepsWithBothEyesOpen: As seen in Chapter 193, right before he wakes up because of [[spoiler:Midoriya's quirk awakening.]]
* SmallNameBigEgo: He's extremely conceited for a character that is mostly used for gags.
* SquishyWizard: His lasers are very powerful, but he's got no endurance. During their fight in the U.A. Sports Festival Arc, Ashido takes him down with a single punch once she evades his lasers and gets close to him.
* StepfordSmiler: Implied. He's [[PerpetualSmiler usually seen smiling]], but it comes off as being an artificial pointed smile. However, he is [[https://66.media.tumblr.com/07410c38b2390731702928cf2a5d5527/tumblr_inline_pafmglwlLh1v4gbfz_500.jpg occasionally drawn smiling widely]], and these smiles are implied to be more sincere.
** Confirmed in Chapter 336 and 337 when it's revealed that [[spoiler: Aoyama has been spending the past year in near-suicidal despair over his role as the [[ForcedIntoEvil UA traitor]].]]
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Facially, he and his mother are near-identical, with the only big difference being their hairstyles.
* SuperheroesWearCapes: His hero costume includes a sparkly purple cape.
* SuperpowerDisability: He has a disability that makes it impossible for him to control his Navel Laser properly, so the Quirk comes with a side of PowerIncontinence and literal incontinence, plus horrid stomach pain. He uses a special belt to mitigate the drawbacks. Given that [[spoiler:like Midoriya he was originally Quirkless]] it is understandable that his Quirk would be damaging to his body.
* TokenEvilTeammate: [[spoiler:{{Downplayed}}, as Yuga only qualifies as "evil" due to his forced association with [[BigBad All For One]] and acts as his Mole in U.A.]].
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Cheese. He believes it's so essential for life that he [[spoiler:blames Midoriya's powers going wild in the middle of the night on a lack of it.]]
* TrappedInVillainy: [[spoiler:For him, it's either spy on U.A. for the benefit of All For One, or have himself and his family be killed. [[RegretfulTraitor He is extremely torn up about it]].]]
* TriangleShades: Sports an orange winged pair in his costume.
* VillainousBSOD: [[spoiler:[[ForcedIntoEvil Though villainous is a big stretch]], Aoyama suffers this big time come Chapter 336 and 337, when Hagakure and Midoriya catch his parents trying to talk him down from revealing himself as the UA traitor, to the point that it almost borders on a DespairEventHorizon. When Aoyama finds out that the cat is out of the bag he falls apart completely, clawing at his own face and attacking Midoriya in a blind panic. After he is restrained and brought in front of UA, he spends the rest of the chapter with DullEyesOfUnhappiness.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: Aoyama is this for two notable reasons and they are both huge spoilers, [[spoiler: one, he is the U.A. Traitor; and two, he like Izuku, is born Quirkless before meeting someone who gave him a quirk. In Aoyama's case it's [[BigBad All For One]].]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Aoyama goes AWOL during the villain attack on the USJ. He later lampshades it after the battle, asking in the background if anyone was curious as to where he went. [[spoiler:The true reason is that he is the one who tipped off All For One about Class 1-A's imminent training session and caused the invasion. Aoyama hid because he couldn't overplay his hand and risk exposure as a traitor, and he was cowering in guilt. When he reappears, he's behaving eccentrically like usual and no one questions it because he's not taken seriously.]]
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: His sparkling laser isn't very versatile, but it's powerful enough to qualify him as a pro-hero in training. He makes his first appearance effortlessly blasting apart a robot with it in the practice exam. However, during Aizawa's follow-up class tests at seeing how the students preform in tasks that aren't linked to combat, Aoyama's attempt to use his laser to RecoilBoost himself across the finish line in a 100-yard dash failed miserably because his quirk cut off mid-way, and by the time he recovered to finish boosting himself across the finish line Ashido had beaten him simply by [[BoringButPractical running the track normally]]. [[spoiler:His lack of creative versatility with a powerful quirk he'd been born with is later revealed to be because he ''wasn't'' born with it, and only received it recently. All For One gave him a strong straightforward power to enable him to pass the entrance exam without needing to spend time acclimatising his body to the [[HeroicRROD drawbacks]] of using an ability it wasn't prepared for. Notably, the time Aoyama spends training under Aizawa's tutelage actually does see him noticeably improve in his handling of the power in more creative ways]].
* WineIsClassy: While it's probably not actual wine due to his age (the legal drinking age in Japan is 20), he's frequently seen drinking something red out of a wineglass during lunch scenes, fitting with his haute and effete presentation.
* YankTheDogsChain: Upon seeing All Might defeating AFO, Yuga thought that [[spoiler: he would be freed from AFO's sway and could at last live in peace with the rest of his friends. During that short time, he opens up a bit more to his classmates and tries to interact a bit more with them, especially Deku with whom he tries to strike an actual friendship. But AFO's big escape from Tartarus changed it all, forcing Yuga to act as TheMole and sneak information to AFO all over again.]]

An emotional and excitable girl with a strange alien-like appearance. Her Quirk, "Acid", allows her to produce corrosive liquid through her skin. She can manipulate its level of solubility and viscosity, but excreting too much acid will eventually start to damage her own skin.
----
* AcidAttack: Her Quirk. She can control the pH and viscosity of the fluid she secretes from her skin, meaning it can be highly acidic and thick or barely acidic and slippery. [[spoiler:Turns out she can make it powerful enough to even melt through the skin of the NighInvulnerable Gigantomachia.]]
* ActionGirl: She tends to get more up-close-and-personal than most of the 1-A girls, as she predominantly has been shown finishing her fights with punches after using her acid to close the distance. She also uses her great agility to jump around battlefields and generally has an energetic, highly mobile fighting style.
* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: Her skin is bright pink as a result of acid buildup.
* ApologeticAttacker: After beating Aoyama in the U.A. Sports Festival, she does an awkward apology pose.
* BadPowersGoodPeople: Acid is not exactly the most heroic of powers. While it's not a problem when she has to face robots or destroy objects, she has to adjust herself against human enemies.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: Subverted. Despite somewhat looking like a female [[Franchise/DragonBall Majin Buu]], she's a nice, energetic heroine. Bakugo calls her "Raccoon Eyes". [[spoiler:Her sclerae are tinted black from the acidic content in her body. When she runs low on her reserves and dehydrates, they start reverting to white just like a normal human's.]]
* BookDumb: Like Kaminari, she doesn't perform well in tests, despite having a highly versatile and useful Quirk and reaching the Top 8 of the U.A. Sports Festival. The databook gives her Intelligence as a simple, if pitiful, 1/5. Despite that, she knows that destroying Aoyama's belt is the best way to limit his ability to use his Quirk, and is able to give Gigantomachia false directions so that he'll leave her friends alone.
* BreakTheCutie: The events of the War and beyond have ''not'' been kind to her. [[spoiler:First she's revealed to suffer from ''severe'' PTSD from having seen one of Gigantomachia's rampages as a child, and seeing him again during the War causes her to have a panic attack at a critical moment. Then she's one of the students who discovers Midnight's broken, bloody remains, leaving her devastated, especially since the chaos caused by [=AFO's=] Tartarus breakout has given her practically no time to properly grieve. And then, just when it seemed things were calming down, she discovers that Aoyama, one of the students she was closest to, is the Traitor. And then, during the final battle, she ends up running into Midnight's killer, who proceeds to gleefully ''taunt'' her about it.]]
* CharacterTics: Ashido tends to bounce when she's excited, and clings onto people when she's scared.
* CheeryPink: Pink is effectively her color motif, and there's nary a moment where she's not smiling, being full of energy, or both.
* ChildLikeVoice: Her spunky, chipper personality and overall cuteness is well-matched by a sweet, high soprano as provided by Creator/EriKitamura.
* ClothingDamage: According to her character file, she'll dissolve her clothes if she isn't careful using her Quirk.
* ColorCharacter: Pink as her appearance and hero name (the second one anyway) makes abundantly clear.
* CombinationAttack: With Mineta, they can use the combo move Grape-Pinky Combo Mineta-Bounce. Mineta lays Pop Off spheres on the ground and walls, with Ashido then throwing Mineta so he keeps bouncing from the spheres and throws more of them onto the enemy. They first use it in the Joint Training Battle against Class 1-B.
* CuteMonsterGirl: An attractive, humanoid... something.
* DanceBattler:
** Ashido is a moderate example, because she doesn't fight with dancing, but it has an effect on her agility. A lot of her physical prowess comes from her breakdancing hobby. As Midoriya sees it, it's like she puts her whole body into everything she does. [[spoiler:He goes on to incorporate what moves he learned from her during the U.A. Cultural Festival in his battle against Gentle, so she does have potential to utilize this in the future]].
** In ''Anime/MyHeroAcademiaHeroesRising'', she faces off against Slice and dodges her FlechetteStorm with a rapid series of flips that would make ComicBook/SpiderMan proud. Unfortunately, even this isn't enough for her to avoid getting hit in the thigh after a while, but she made herself an exceptionally difficult target to hit for someone without any kind of SuperSpeed.
* DeathGlare: [[spoiler:Shoots one of these at Midnight's murderer when she comes across him by chance during the FinalBattle and overhears him gloating about killing her. She clearly starts looking for payback so she can bring him to justice.]]
* DominoMask: She wears a white one as part of her hero costume.
* DumbMuscle: While physically strong and athletic, Ashido isn't the smartest out of her class, as she and Kaminari both fail their exam against [[IntellectualAnimal Principal Nezu]].
* TheFace:
** Ashido's good with conversation. Very, very good. She easily makes friends with other people, owing a lot of it to being outgoing and very easily noticeable. Even before coming to U.A., she had herself an entourage of friends- including bullies she won over to her side. She even got a villain to go away by simply talking to him when everyone else was avoiding him, even though she knew she was taking a risk by telling him a lie... but he didn't know that, so it was worth the risk if it meant protecting her friends from harm.
** She could tell that Kirishima hadn't gotten past his guilt over being a coward even though he was telling her otherwise.
* FantasticArousal: Her horns are apparently sensitive given her reaction to them being touched.
* GenkiGirl: Next to Hagakure, she's one of the liveliest girls, if not one of the liveliest students in general.
* GyaruGirl: Of all 1-A girls, Mina has this aesthetic, having pink and unruly short hair, dark skin in the manga, and a fashionable hero costume that contains a fur collar on her vest and patterns on her bodysuit, all to fit her carefree and energetic personality.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: In spite of the potential lethality of her Quirk -- or, more likely, perhaps because of it -- she tends to use only mildly burning acids against human enemies and instead prefers finishing them off with punches.
* GreenSkinnedSpaceBabe: Her motif. She is very alien in appearance and even attempts to name herself "Alien Queen", but she's still quite attractive.
* HiddenBuxom: Based on her hero costume, it's clear she's not exactly flat-chested, but it's never made clear just ''how'' busty she is until she's seen in a bikini in the anime: she has larger breasts than every girl in the class barring Yaoyorozu. Her bikini in the ''Smash Tap'' mobile game even shows generous underboob from her spilling out of her top.
* HiddenDepths: In her profile, it's stated that she likes dancing which explains why she's the most physically fit of the girls and has the best reflexes among the class. She's seen actually breakdancing in a flashback, using it ''to break up a fight''.
* HornedHumanoid: Has a small pair of horns. They are flexible and sensitive, making it unlikely they are made of bone. Horikoshi initially made them much bigger and curly like ram's horns, but he had too much difficulty drawing them on a regular basis.
* InstantArmor: Following her winter internship, she develops "Acidman", a move that covers herself in a {{Blob Monster}}-like coating of acidic goo, which melts anything that touches it. She mentions to Kirishima that she was inspired by his "Unbreakable" move to create it. [[spoiler:It even allows her to run a wall of flames [[TechnicolorFire Dabi]] created]].
* LightningBruiser: Between some creative use of her Quirk and her general agility, she's very good at moving quickly and unpredictably; ''Heroes: Rising'' in particular shows her run though a complicated series of flips and gymnastic maneuvers to stay ahead of Slice's attacks. Additionally, while she's not a physical powerhouse, her Quirk can inflict a lot of damage on just about anything she aims it at.
* LoveFreak: Ashido is highly interested about the love lives of other people, although she herself is confirmed to have never been in love with anyone.
* ManOfKryptonite: [[spoiler:It turns out her powers are the perfect counter to the Sludge Villain, as her acid mixing with his body bypasses his resistance to damage. As such, the moment she starts attacking him, he runs for it.]]
* MeaningfulName: Her surname sounds like "acid", referring to her Quirk. The first kanji in her given name, "mi" (meaning "three") can also be pronounced "san", which is also the pronunciation of the Japanese word for "acid".
* MessyHair: Not unlike Midoriya's, her hair sticks up in different directions.
* ModestyShorts: Mineta laments that Ashido wears these when she starts a bit of breakdancing. He at least wants her to take the skirt off because it's not necessary, at least to him.
* MsFanservice: [[ProudBeauty And proud of it]]. When Kota stops Mineta from [[OutdoorBathPeeping peeping on the girls]], she has no problem thanking him while sitting on a rock ''outside of the water'', [[ShamelessFanserviceGirl completely naked]] (but still covered by SceneryCensor to the audience). She is also keen to wear a cute swimsuit she recently purchased when the Class 1-A girls think of using the school pool.
* MySuitIsAlsoSuper: By necessity, her hero costume is acidproof.
* NiceGirl: She's shown to be rather friendly. This is exemplified in Kirishima's backstory, where she uses non-aggressive means to resolve conflicts, like using [[ItMakesSenseInContext breakdancing to get bullies to leave their victim alone]], and giving a villain false directions when he was harassing her friends. The only people she's shown hostility towards are [[{{Jerkass}} Bakugo and Monoma]].
* PerpetualSmiler: It's rather rare to see her without a wide smile on her face.
* PinkMeansFeminine: {{Exaggerated|Trope}}. She is one of the prettier, more feminine girls in her class, and she has pink skin, pink hair and Pinky for a Hero name.
* PowerIncontinence: In her civvies, Mina has at least one top with little holes burnt through the fabric from acidic sweat.
* PowerStereotypeFlip: Somebody with acid as a superpower could be expected to be [[PoisonIsEvil evil or destructive]], but Ashido is a friendly, outgoing, fun-loving person.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Her skin is resistant to her own acid, but using it consecutively can lead to it harming her.
* RoseHairedSweetie: Both Rose-Haired and Rose-''Skinned'' Sweetie. She's a perky, friendly and sociable girl who makes friends with ease and is very popular among her classmates. She's also a bit of a LoveFreak, getting very enthusiastic about seeing or talking about romance.
* SailorFuku: During flashbacks to Kirishima's backstory, she's seen wearing a regular Japanese school uniform.
* ShipperOnDeck: This comes as a result of Ashido being fascinated by romance in general, leading her to love to see romance around her and support romance as a whole, rather than any particular pairing:
** She's intrigued with and supports the idea of Uraraka having a crush, though she doesn't know who it is at first. But once she discerns that it's Midoriya, she becomes ''quite'' giddy at the thought of the two becoming a couple.
** To a much lesser extent, she was also entertained with the idea of Aizawa and Ms. Joke being an item.
** Midnight and All Might getting to the joint training together is all that she needs to start thinking that they could be lovers.
* ShoutOut: When deciding what their hero names will be in Chapter 45, Ashido's original choice was "Alien Queen," a clear reference to the Xenomorph Queen in ''Film/{{Aliens}}''. It's even lampshaded by one of the students. There's even an image of Ashido with features of a Xenomorph, and she gives herself the sub-name "[[Creator/RidleyScott Ridley Hero]]".[[note]]Though in his author's notes, Horikoshi remarks that the Alien Queen first appeared in ''Aliens'', so "[[Creator/JamesCameron Cameron Hero]]" would be more appropriate.[[/note]]
* SignatureLaugh: Although she's only used it twice, she has a distinctive "Nyee hee hee!" laugh accompanied by a mischievous smile.
* SitcomArchNemesis: To Aoyama. She often steals his spotlight when he attempts to call attention to himself by either managing to be an even [[LargeHam bigger ham]] than him, or by simply pointing out how he is wrong in a friendly manner. As a result, it's heavily implied that he dislikes her. She also beats him in the U.A. Sports Festival.
* TheSocialExpert: Confident, principled, friendly, and a spirited conversationalist, Ashido was easily one of the most popular girls in her middle school.
* SuperSliding: Ashido is able to emit a low-concentration HollywoodAcid through holes in her shoes, allowing her and anyone with her to quickly slide forward on the resulting slick surface.
* TechnicolorEyes: Her eyes have black sclerae combined with yellow irises. Horikoshi notes that they give off a very different impression before they're inked in.
* TechnicolorToxin: Her stored acid turns her skin pigmentation purplish pink and tints her sclera black for some reason.
* TraumaButton: [[spoiler:When she's about to throw her vial of anesthetic into Gigantomachia's mouth, the giant villain rumbling about so many pests makes Ashido recognize him from the time they met and freeze. She briefly flashes back to the schoolgirl she was then in her mind, accidentally losing her grip on the vial in the process. If Kirishima hadn't pushed her out of the way, Gigantomachia would've crushed her]].
* TrickedOutShoes: She has special shoes with her hero costume that allow her to secrete acid directly from her feet (presumably worn without socks) that she can glide around on. She was permitted to use them during the U.A. Sports Festival because they technically don't constitute a full costume.
* {{Underboobs}}: Her bikini in the ''Smash Tap'' mobile game shows the undersides of her breasts as well.
* WildTake: When she and the rest of the extra lessons group excitedly think they'll do a courage test in the forest during the Forest Training Camp Arc and Aizawa bursts their bubble by informing them that they're gonna have a class with him right now, she reacts like this, shouting "you've got to be kidding me!" in a weird, exaggerated voice complete with ColorFailure.
* YouDontLookLikeYou: Her Bellfine 1/8 scale figure shows her spraying green acid instead of white.

A young girl with a strange appearance caused by her Quirk, "Frog", which allows her to do pretty much anything a frog can, such as jump long distances, swim with extreme agility and extend her tongue like a flexible steel cable. She is calm and level-headed even in the most stressful situations, and tends to bluntly say whatever is on her mind.
----
* TheAce: Recovery Girl describes her as "a stellar hero with no obvious weaknesses", able to handle situations under pressure.
* AchillesHeel:
** Her tongue is a primary weapon, but can be used against her if grabbed.
** She's also vulnerable to sharp variances in temperature, as seen when Saiko Intelli forced her into a coma by locking her in a chilled room during the Preliminary License Exams.
* ActionGirl: While she physically fights out of self-defense, she's quite good at it, as shown when she drop-kicked a villain about to attack Midoriya. She also put quite a fight against Innsmouth and his crew when they held Sirius hostage.
* AffectionateNickname: Insists to anyone she makes friends with on being called "Tsuyu-chan" ("Tsu" in the English dub), which her classmates endearingly calls her so.
* AmphibianAssault: Can make use of her Frog Quirk and attributes in full during battle. This include her long and versatile tongue.
* AnimalMotifs: Froppy is froggy! Fittingly, her first friend was a snake girl.
* AnimalThemedSuperbeing: "[[ComicBook/SpiderMan Does whatever a frog can!]]" To boot, she speaks with a nasal voice reminiscent of [[AnimalSpeciesAccent a frog's croak]].
* AnimeHair: It appears to be tied in a bow.
* BadassAdorable: The badass part becomes obvious after she dropkicked a shark-like villain in order to save Midoriya's life. The adorable part comes from being an endearing CuteMonsterGirl who makes a variety of cute facial expressions and always insists that her friends call her [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics Tsuyu-chan]] ("Tsu" in the dub). Even her hero name sounds adorable, as lampshaded by her class when she came up with it.
* BadassInDistress: Despite being a fairly competent fighter, she still has a lot to learn and is out for the count if villains manage to catch her (such as Innsmouth and Toga).
* BeneathTheMask: Tsuyu is calm and unwavering on the outside, but on the inside, [[HerOwnWorstEnemy she beats herself up real hard]].
* BigDamnHeroes: Saves Midoriya and Mineta after they're warped to a water area, and attacked by a fish-type villain.
* BrutalHonesty:
** Not afraid to say what's on her mind. After the Bakugo vs. Uraraka fight, she has an exchange with Kaminari along the lines of this:
--->'''Kaminari:''' (''to Bakugo'') If it were me, I wouldn't dare to go all out on a fragile girl like that.\
'''Tsuyu:''' You got easily beaten, though.
** She acknowledges this trait of hers in Chapter 99, but then reveals she subjects ''herself'' to the very same treatment in private. However, being truthful with herself is especially painful, because she has to live with the shame of confessing to her own mistakes, and realizing her honesty actually makes things worse sometimes. When she works up the courage to tell everyone that her remarks were misguided, it also becomes clear that, had she held back her real feelings, she wouldn't be able to live with herself. Getting all this out in the open is enough to make her cry buckets. [[GroupHug Fortunately, she has people who care enough to instantly hold her and comfort her once she succumbs to her tears]].
* CatchPhrase: "Ribbit-ribbit." (''"kero kero"'' in Japanese). She ''is'' part-frog, after all.
* ChameleonCamouflage: The result of her training her Quirk is that Tsuyu can now camouflage herself much like certain species of frogs.
* CharacterTics: She has a habit of touching her chin with her point finger in contemplation. She also can't seem to keep her tongue in her mouth, and has a habit of walking around bowlegged in a frog-like pose. She also tends to keep her arms pronated as a default posture.
* ChekhovsSkill: During the USJ Arc at the end of Season 1, she tells Midoriya and Mineta that one of her abilities is to secrete a "toxic" mucus that actually only stings a little. This finally comes into play in Season 5, when she uses it to mask Kaminari and Shinsou's scents during the mock battle against Class 1-B, fooling Shishida's sense of smell and giving them the upper hand.
* CombinationAttack: With Uraraka, they can use the combo move Meteor Fafrotskies — Uraraka levitates debris and Tsuyu, and Tsuyu uses her tongue to throw the debris. They first use it against two giant villains during their internship with Ryukyu.
* CuteMonsterGirl: You wouldn't expect a human frog to be this adorable.
* DivingKick: Her signature attack technique, due to having strong legs out of being part-frog.
* DoNotCallMePaul: Only her friends call her "Tsu". She won't let just anyone do it, and tells the psycho villain Toga not to.
* EmotionlessGirl: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with as a misconception people tend to have about her at first glance]], because her looks can deceive. She has a relatively unemotive face much like a frog's, and on the outside, it makes her appear aloof and a little creepy to strangers, which is why it was hard for her to find true friends during middle school. She really does feels emotions just as much as anybody else would, some even more so than others.
* FirstFriend: To Habuko, a snake girl she met in middle school who had previously had a hard time making friends due to her frightening appearance. Notably, Habuko was also ''her'' FirstFriend, as Tsuyu hadn't had any time to make friends before due to having to spend all her time after school looking after her siblings.
* FirstNameBasis: Insists people call her by her first name, Tsuyu, and add "chan" to it, and does the same for most of her female classmates. A bonus chapter showing her backstory implies she considers it a sign of friendship, due to it being what her first friend referred to her with. However, if she ''refuses'' to let someone call her by that name, it's a sign of hostility.
* FriendlessBackground: Thanks to studying and having to look after her siblings, she didn't make any friends until the last year of middle school.
* FrogMen: Not only does she have froglike features, but her entire family are all frog people.
* GogglesDoNothing: Her hero costume includes green-tinted goggles that are usually perched on the top of her head. She hasn't been seen using them yet, though presumably, they improve her vision underwater.
* GracefulInTheirElement: Being a LittleBitBeastly makes her stand out a little due to her frog-like characteristics, but she has excellent mobility in water.
* HairColorDissonance: Her hair is either black, black with teal highlights, or teal entirely.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: How good a superpower is the ability to do "whatever a frog can", exactly? Good enough to qualify into an elite hero school with a 1 in 300 admittance rate, apparently. She has [[InASingleBound super jumping]], [[MultipurposeTongue a prehensile tongue]], [[PoisonousPerson mildly poisonous mucus]], {{Wall Crawl}}ing, and other amphibian superpowers. Not a bad package overall.
* InASingleBound: Being a frog, she can jump very high.
* JackOfAllStats: Above average agility, strength, intelligence, and special abilities. This makes her extremely adaptable to any emergency, and she can be instantly plugged into any team and improve it. That being said, she also suffers from not being a heavy hitter, so she excels as a support fighter, but typically leaves the actual attacking to the rest of her team.
* KickChick: Her signature attack is a flying kick with both legs, from various angles.
* LastNameBasis: Goes out of her way to try and defy this, telling her friends to call her Tsuyu-chan (which is especially informal and endearing) instead of Asui-san (the traditional honorific) even in the midst of battle.
* LittleBitBeastly: Has a frog tongue as well as certain frog abilities like croaking and secreting poison. She also has elongated hands, feet, and digits as well as the limberness of a frog.
* LogicalWeakness: According to Recovery Girl, Tsu has no "obvious weaknesses". That said, having frog attributes also means she has frog weaknesses:
** She is particularly weak to low temperatures which turn her sluggish and weak as her body gets ready to hibernate, much like an actual frog. She is incapacitated this way by a group of enemies in Episode 55.
** Her long tongue is an easy target. Toga managed to leave a slight cut. An octopus villain in her intern assignment was able to grab it.
* LongHairIsFeminine: And hers is long enough to be tied in a bow. It's a bit impractical in a fighting situation, however, as Toga was able to pin her to a tree by her hair with a throwing knife.
* LovelyAngels: She can be this with Uraraka. The two easily cooperate with each other while as seen during their fight against Toga and also both do the hero work studies together at the Ryukyu agency, where to the point that they have created a Super Move by combining their respective Quirks: Meteor Fafrotskies which was used against a giantified villain.
* MeaningfulName: "Asui" contains the character for "frog".
* MultipurposeTongue: Again, frog. OverlyLongTongue is to be expected.
* NervesOfSteel: One of her strong points as a heroine is her ability to remain calm, no matter how dire the situation may seem.
* NiceGirl: BrutalHonesty aside, Tsuyu really is a sweetheart who just has problems emoting properly.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: She looks more cartoonish than her other classmates -- especially with her big stylized eyes, wider mouth and bow-legged stance -- but is certainly far from a {{Gonk}}.
* NotSoStoic: Poor girl actually [[TenderTears cries]] in Chapter 99 when she expresses her feelings to Bakugo's rescue squad.
* OddFriendship: Who would think that a frog-like girl would be best friends with a girl with the appearance of a snake?
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: She's normally calm and very open with her thoughts. So when she expresses to Bakugo's rescue squad that she doesn't know what to say to them regarding what happened and then starts ''crying'' due to her conflicted emotions, it really hammers in how heavily that arc affected everyone.
* PervertRevengeMode: If Mineta makes an inappropriate comment, even if it's not directed at her, she's usually the one to dish out some LaserGuidedKarma.
* PoisonousPerson: Somewhat, her stomach can make poisonous mucus and she can secrete it, but it makes more of a stinging sensation than anything really dangerous. By the time of the second movie, it's strong enough to paralyze a villain for a few seconds.
* PowerPerversionPotential: Having a prehensile tongue that's long and strong enough to restrain someone with, there are a lot of possibilities. Comes up briefly in-story after she captures a student from Class 1-B during a joint training exercise, and afterward the guy's heart is pounding at the memory of it.
* PromotionToParent: Due to her parents often being away from home, she acts as this for her younger siblings.
* RunningOnAllFours: She occasionally runs on all fours in a frog-like stance when she needs to get somewhere quickly, which further highlights her overall frog motif.
* SemanticSuperpower: Doing anything a frog can do means the following: extremely powerful leg muscles, a lightning-fast tongue like a prehensile steel cable, adhering to walls, inverting her stomach and secreting toxins, and invisibility through camouflage. Needless to say, she's a very versatile heroine. On the downside, she's ectothermic and becomes sluggish when it's cold.
* ShipperOnDeck: Less pronounced than Mina but she also supports Ochaco's romantic affection for Izuku, she just does it quietly. [[spoiler:It's to the point that she becomes Ochaco's wingwoman, interrupting Toga before she can spill the beans about Ochaco's crush and thus ruin her chance to confess properly.]]
* ShoutOut: Her Quirk seems to be one to [[Characters/XMenBrotherhoodOfMutants Toad]] from ''ComicBook/XMen'', having very similar powers to his due to their amphibious physiologies.
* TheStoic: Like water off a frog's back, nothing really fazes her and her expression rarely changes. This is noted to be her strongest point as a hero, as her always cool-headed personality allows her to make good judgments in many situations and also gives a calming effect on others, making her an emotional pillar in teams.
* StomachOfHolding: She's able to hold fairly large objects in her stomach, but getting them out leaves her nauseated. One of which were a pair of prop handcuffs needed to "arrest" Ectoplasm during the Final Exam.
* SuperStrength: One of her most important RequiredSecondaryPowers. She can carry people with her tongue and her legs are as enormously powerful as you might expect from a human who can jump around like a frog.
* ThinkingOutLoud: She does this sometimes, often to the point of being overly descriptive.
* TongueTrauma: Gets a small cut on her tongue during the Forest Training Camp, which thankfully heals.
* TookALevelInBadass: Tsuyu struggled against Ectoplasm during their spar and, as mentioned below under WeakButSkilled, she has trouble doing major damage to villains as evidenced by her 1/5 rating in power. By the time she took up her internship, Tsuyu has trained enough to be able to knock out a [[{{Kaiju}} Gigantification Quirk user]], who was the size of a small apartment complex, in one attack after Nejire knocked them over.
* TheUglyGuysHotDaughter: Both of her parents are {{Gonk}}s, but Tsuyu and both of her siblings look far cuter.
* VerbalTic: "Kero", the Japanese onomatopoeia for a frog's croaking. In English, it naturally becomes "ribbit".
* VocalDissonance: Despite her rather cute appearance, Tsuyu's voice is rather gruff and frog-like. Her dub voice can best be described as "[[WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse Peridot]] with a cold".
* WallCrawl: Able to stick to surfaces and climb along them.
* WeakButSkilled: As displayed in her official stats, her Power sits at a miserable 1, her Speed at a middling 3, but her Technique and Intelligence are both 4. Overall, while her powerset is not ideal for taking down stronger villains--she lacks the sheer power for that--it is excellent for rescue purposes both on land (she can grab someone from a great distance with her long tongue, then leap to safety) and underwater (where she has frog-like swimming capability). Additionally, her Cooperativeness stat is 5, and she has proven skillful at providing support for teammates, such as by hindering villains or pulling allies out of dangerous situations.

->''"I'm a novice. I can't measure up to their standards! Be that as may... I have to stand up! Never again! Never again will they... or my brother... Leave me behind in the dust!"''

Class 1-A's president. He's an earnest, goal-oriented but rather uptight young man who comes from a wealthy family of heroes. His big brother, the first Ingenium, is a renowned hero who was critically injured by the Hero Killer Stain, and he wants to become just like him, as well as defeat Stain himself. His Quirk, "Engine", takes the form of engine-like tubes on his calves, giving him incredible speed and kicking strength.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: He has blue eyes in the anime adaptation while his eye color was red in the manga.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Believes he will never be as good a hero as his brother, but as it turns out, his brother thinks the same thing of him, believing that in the long run, Tenya will be a far better hero than he ever was.
* AnimalMotif: Horses. In a lot of fan arts with Iida, he is often seen depicted as an anthropomorphic horse or riding one. His Quirk and fighting style are also reminiscent of a horse: he has great speed and is a heavy hitter thanks to Engine enhancing his kicking strength. His Hero Costume is also a gleaming white color, like an elegant WhiteStallion. Just as horses carry a lot of burdens due to how valuable and strong they are, Iida himself also carries much burden due to being the de facto leader of Class 1-A when Aizawa isn't around.
* BigBrotherWorship: Admires his big brother and aims to become a great hero like him.
* BizarreHumanBiology: Although his Quirk looks ''mechanical'', it's actually an organic combustion engine that runs off of fuel produced by his body. [[spoiler:Pieces of it will regrow if torn off, and will be stronger than the old ones provided his body is also strong enough. All the Ingeniums do this at some point, as the parts grown as a child don't work well for an athletic young adult, but the process is implied to not be able to be done under full anesthetic and must be done on their own because the operation is a family secret. Ida ripped off his own exhaust sometime after the provisional hero license exam, bleeding from the holes and was clearly in extreme agony]].
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: Manages to fight off Stain along with Midoriya, but he has sustained serious nerve damage in his left arm.
* CharacterDevelopment: Originally, he had a serious case of tunnel vision, often focusing on a single goal to the detriment of others, such as his abandoning Uraraka to the Zero Pointer to focus on the entrance exam, or being so consumed with {{revenge}} against Stain that he ignored the injured Native in favor of pursuing it. [[spoiler:Come the Joint Training Arc, rather than pursue Honenuki fruitlessly, he instead intercepts Kaibara as he battles Ojiro, opting to treat the exercise as real and take out an immediate threat rather than let his own concerns distract him]].
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In his first appearance, Ida was considerably more arrogant than he would be later in the plot. His more endearing traits and CharacterTics also wouldn't show up until the end of the Heroes vs. Villains exercise.
* CharacterTics:
** Straightening his arms and gesturing. A running gag with him is that he seems to be unaware of what his hands are doing, so he makes more and more bizarre hand gestures while trying to express himself. In ''Vigilantes'', his brother even asks him if he's a robot in a flashback.
** Addressing all his classmates, including girls, with "-kun" honorific, as a sign of a professional relationship. Especially noticeable when he has to address Tsuyu, who asks everyone to call her "Tsuyu-chan", which results in Ida calling her "Tsuyu-chan-kun".
* ClarkKentOutfit: His school uniform doesn't reveal anything, but he has the body of a bodybuilder, to the point of having an 8-pack showing through the clothes he first wore during the admission exam. He is actually the most muscular member of the main cast, and one of the most muscular among the students. This is {{justified|Trope}} given his HeroicBuild.
* ClassRepresentative: Fits the archetype to a T, even getting a LampshadeHanging from Uraraka. Interestingly, he initially supported Midoriya for the position despite really wanting it, and was granted the position after Midoriya acknowledged his leadership skills.
* TheComicallySerious: Everything is SeriousBusiness to him, including playing a villain, complete with evil laugh and thoughts. Unfortunately for him, he's stuck in a WackyHomeroom.
-->'''Ida:''' ''[After Honenuki softens Todoroki's ice and Ida gets trapped inside it]'' Are you trying to keep us from working as a team? [[YouMonster You crafty villain]]!\
'''Shinso:''' He's really in character, huh?
* CrazyPrepared: PlayedForLaughs:
** During the first simulation against Uraraka, he empties the room of all objects that aren't nailed down so that she can't use her Quirk, though ultimately it doesn't do much good since Midoriya breaks the floor open for her to use the ensuing debris as emergency ammunition.
** He has an entire wall filled with shelves of spare prescription glasses in his dorm room because he expects them to get destroyed during their intense training, much to Uraraka's amusement.
* DemotedToExtra: In the beginning of the series Ida was given a lot of focus and treated as one of the primary main characters. Since the Field Training Arc, Ida has not had an arc focused on him, and even has slowly been disappearing from marketing. While he still has a decent size role, his role has been noticeable been reduced since that arc and is more of a side character in the series at this point.
* DitzyGenius: Has shades of this. His academic performance is so strong that he's second-best in the class. Despite this, it's clear that he struggles when dealing with basic level social interaction, usually coming off as too loud and intense.
* DivingKick: His most common finishing move. Justified by the fact that the engines in his calves multiply the force of his kicks, making this move particularly efficient in his case.
* EvilIsHammy: Invoked. When playing the role of a villain for an exercise, he includes stereotypical villainous thoughts and laughter in his actions.
* ExplosiveOverclocking: What his secret weapon is. He can put the "engines" in his legs into overdrive, but stalls immediately afterwards.
* ExtremityExtremist: Mostly fights with his legs. This is justified as they are strengthened by the boost of the engines.
* FamilyThemeNaming: '''Ten'''ya and his brother, '''Ten'''sei.
* FriendlyRivalry: Genuinely likes and respects Midoriya, but also feels the need to test himself against his friend so that he doesn't get lost in Midoriya's shadow.
* HairColorDissonance:
** His hair is either black or dark blue depending on the artwork.
** In the anime, his eyes are blue, but in the manga, they're red, orange, or gold.
* HelmetsAreHardlyHeroic: A somewhat mixed example. Whenever he is in full uniform, he almost always wears his helmet. During his fight with Stain, however, his helmet is knocked off by Stain at the beginning of their fight, and he doesn't put it back on during the ensuing battle.
* HeroicBuild: Justified. He needs a muscular body in order to keep up with the speed of his legs and wear his heavy body armor.
* HeroicLineage: He comes from a long line of heroes and wishes to be as great as his brother.
* HotBlooded: A particularly polite and well-behaved example, but still counts:
-->'''Tsuyu:''' Iida's got a really oddball way of unleashing his passion. Weirdo.
* {{Hunk}}: A clear-cut straight example with his massive yet chiseled physique, his height, his [[LanternJawOfJustice square jaw]] (one of the few to have this in class 1-A) and overall good looks.
* InconsistentSpelling: His surname can be romanized as "Ida" or "Iida". The anime has gone with the latter, but the official Viz translations go with the former.
* InformedFlaw: After the battle with Stain Iida's left arm suffers severe nerve damage with him stating that he would have trouble moving his fingers correctly from then on. Since Iida primarily uses his legs for fighting the audience never gets to see this problem affect him in his day-to-day life.
* KeepingTheHandicap: He receives a scar and residual damage to his arm after his fight with Stain. Although he could have had it removed with surgery, he decides to keep it as a reminder of his past mistakes until he feels he learned his lesson.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Wears a set of full plate armor, and has the noble and honorable personality down to a T as well. Unlike Aoyama who also wears a knight-themed hero costume, Ida's is more modernized and looks like it came out of a sci-fi series. He's even a knight in the HeroicFantasy-themed popularity poll art.
* LargeAndInCharge: One of the tallest pupils of Class 1-A, second only to Rikido in the muscle department, tallest and most muscular of the main cast. Current class rep and resident TeamDad.
* LargeHam: PlayedForLaughs. Iida tends to be [[NoIndoorVoice fairly loud]], [[CharacterTics make exaggerated hand gestures and poses]], and [[{{Camp}} act overdramatic in situations that don't call for it]].
* LegacyCharacter: His brother was the previous Ingenium, one of a long line of speedster heroes. He takes up the name at his brother's request after his brother was critically injured by Stain.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKBevxvmKcw "Ingenium"]].
* LightningBruiser: Not only do his engines give him super speed, they also let him hit like a truck with his kicks.
* LogicalWeakness: Jamming the exhaust pipes of his leg engines will cause them to stop working. Similarly forcing his engines to go beyond what they normally can handle will cause them to overheat and render him useless.
* MilkingTheGiantCow: One of his CharacterTics is jerking his arms robotically for emphasis, making it resemble this.
* MrFanservice: During endurance training at the pool, his hunky physique is shown off for all its worth.
* NiceGuy: A very kind and polite guy. After their first battle, he's seen rubbing Uraraka's back as she tries not to puke from her Quirk. He also (mistakenly) assumes that Midoriya got into the academy because he figured out the hidden purpose of the exam, and apologizes for doubting his abilities.
* NotSoAboveItAll:
** Despite his attempts at being a stoic and composed leader, as his reactions to Yaoyorozu's analysis of his performance during the Heroes vs. Villains exercise and Ectoplasm calling his Recipro Burst a technique worthy of being called a "Super Move" show, Iida ''really'' likes being praised.
** After Midoriya, Uraraka, Kirishima, and Tsuyu came home from their mission, Ida stepped in to stop everyone else from freaking out over them. After Midoriya tells Ida that they really are alright, Iida say "Well then..." and then begins to freak out over them harder than anyone else had.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** After his brother is seriously injured, Iida goes to visit him in the hospital and starts ''running in the halls''.
** When Midoriya finds out that Iida abandoned his post during the Hosu City crisis, he remarks it's ''really'' unlike Ida to do that. This is part of how he deduces where Ida went.
* OutOfFocus: Sometimes, secondary characters get as much if not more attention than him, particularly Tokoyami and Yaoyorozu. For quite a while, he was often in the background compared to his classmates, putting his status as a main character into question. Come the Joint Training Arc, he's firmly reestablished his presence by displaying his improved skill and resolve.
* PoorCommunicationKills: It's noted more than once that his issues with Stain became a serious problem because he didn't talk them out with anyone. Iida brings this up later when Midoriya is going through a hard time of his own during the Internship arc. Unfortunately, Midoriya is not allowed to talk about his problems this time.
* PowerAtAPrice: [[spoiler:Iida's upgraded special move, the "Recipro Turbo", required he remove the muffler in his legs so his Quirk will grow new, stronger muffler. In addition, while it effectively allows him to use his Recipro Burst for up to 10 minutes, it sacrifices control in the process, leaving Ida running out of control at high speeds]].
* PunnyName: "Idaten" means "sprinter" in Japanese.
* RingOut: During their duel at the U.A. Sports Festival, he defeats Shiozaki by grabbing her and pushing her out of the ring before she could entangle him with her brambles.
* RotatingProtagonist: He tends to fall in and out of focus depending on the arc. He gets a spotlight in the Battle Trial, U.A. Sports Festival, Field Training, Hideout Raid, and Joint Training Arcs.
* ScarsAreForever: His left arm ends up suffering from residual damage after the battle against Stain. This is an invoked example as his arm could have been fixed through surgery, but he decided to keep it damaged as a reminder of the encounter, at least until he feels he has learnt his lesson.
* SecretlySelfish:
** This pops up a couple of times with Ida, such as abandoning Uraraka when she was trapped during the Entrance Exam. He also totally ignored the wounded pro hero that Stain was about to kill because he was so focused on ''his'' revenge. Stain and Todoroki call him out on this.
** He chose to join Todoroki's team instead of Midoriya's during the cavalry battle, saying that Midoriya might be his friend, but right now he's also his rival. By contrast, Uraraka joined Midoriya's team without a second thought, despite the target on Midoriya's back. Of course, Uraraka later concedes that Ida was right to think of Midoriya as a rival, and is determined to succeed on his own.
* StoicSpectacles: Has a serious expression for most of the time, and his square glasses help this image.
* SuperSpeed: His Quirk allows him to run very fast. He has literal engines on his legs. [[spoiler:He's even faster than Gran Torino after doing some self-surgery on his legs.]] [[spoiler:In the Final War Arc, with some support from Todoroki, he proves capable of ''breaking the sound barrier''.]]
* TeamDad: Invoked. He tries his best to remain a composed leader figure and have everyone follow the rules, [[TheComicallySerious to mixed results]].
** He reaches the peak of it in the Dark Hero Arc. When Deku flies away from his classmates in order to hunt All For One and Tomura by himself, which would've been self destructive for Deku, Iida being the only one able to keep up with his speed manages to grab Deku's hand and reach to him emotionally despite the latter's protests, by saying that "Ingenium is a hero who will run anywhere to grab the hand of a lost child.". After this speech, Iida grabs Midoriya in his arms and lands with him safely in Kirishima's arms, who was there to stop the impact. Mind you, that midoriya is '''older''' than Iida.
* TooFastToStop: He can run super-fast when he activates his leg engines, but deactivating them takes time. Bakugo takes advantage of this in the ''[[Anime/MyHeroAcademiaTrainingOfTheDead Training of the Dead]]'' OVA by baiting Ida into running after him and leading him straight into a trap made of capture tape.
* TrademarkFavoriteDrink: His Quirk is fueled by the liquids he drinks and orange juice has the highest octane rating of everything he's tried. As such, he will always drink that if it's available.
* TragicKeepsake: [[spoiler:His own hero name; "Ingenium" was originally his brother's before he was paralysed from the waist-down by Stain. He initially refuses to use it out of respect and trauma, instead choosing to use his own name until he confronts Stain himself, now vowing to take him down using this title.]]
* VirtuousCharacterCopy: He is, at first glance, a dead ringer for Yukio from ''Manga/{{Blue Exorcist}}'' -- both are tall mature-looking guys with glasses, being overly serious workaholics who idolize their older brothers but are also prone to competitiveness and self-deprecation. But while Yukio is kinda mentally unstable, prone to abuse his brother Rin and [[spoiler: even briefly does a Face-Heel Turn]], Iida is only briefly snaps at Midoriya for his seemingly reckless behaviorand is otherwise friendly and loyal to everyone his classmates.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Drinking any carbonated beverage will make his engines stall.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: He is only 16 despite having a body that looks more suitable for an adult. It actually comes in handy when Yaoyorozu has them disguise themselves on the mission to rescue Bakugo, as he can pass for someone who looks older.

->''"So I'm going to be a hero. I'll make that money...So that my mom and dad can have easier lives!"''

An outgoing young girl who befriends Midoriya after he saves her during the entrance exam. Her Quirk is "Zero Gravity," which lets her reduce the gravitational pull of anything she touches to zero. Her family owns a construction company that hasn't gotten any work in a long time, leaving them flat broke, and because of this, she wants to become a heroine in order to earn enough money to give her parents a good life. She becomes very close with Midoriya throughout the series, and most people assume she has developed a crush on him, which ''might'' just be true. Although anytime you ask her about it, she's liable to float away out of embarrassment.
----
* AchillesHeel: She can remove the weight of any physical object or person up to three metric tons per day. Awesome! Only problem is, once she reaches that limit or uses it on herself, [[VomitDiscretionShot she pukes]]. She gets better over time and not only vastly increases her daily limit, but also has no more issues using her Quirk on herself so she can effectively [[NotQuiteFlight fly.]]
* ActionGirl: Slowly grows into this, especially since receiving martial arts training from Gunhead, where she mixes martial arts moves along with her Quirk.
* AffectionateNickname: A very special case of this, with Ochaco nicknaming Izuku "Deku". That nickname was initially an insult that Izuku's former friend Katsuki used to belittle him (it means 'useless'), but Ochaco came to use the name after a misunderstanding, thinking it sounded encouraging (it sounds like "dekiru", "you can do it", in a Kansai accent). This completely changed Izuku's outlook on that name, [[AppropriatedAppellation to the point he decided to adopt it as his superhero alias;]] while Katsuki looked angry about that, Ochaco was very touched.
* AllLovingHero: Like her best friend and love interest Izuku, Ochaco wants to put smiles on people's faces and make them feel safe, feeding into her development as a hero growing beyond her initial monetary motivations. [[spoiler:It's this empathy that convinces her to try to save Toga, despite her terrible crimes, and is softly encouraged by Izuku to follow her instincts since he plans to do the same with Shigaraki. Although he also reminds her there might be no way to avoid a battle despite their best efforts, which Ochaco agrees with.]]
* AnimalMotifs:
** Her suit redesign has her ditch the helmet in favor of a headpiece that mimics the rabbit-like ears on Izuku's hero costume.
** Alongside Shoto, the volume 30 character page depicts her as a cat, which makes sense given in her case they can be quite playful like her. The pads on her fingertips can invoke those on a cat's paws.
* AntiHero: Subverted. When questioned, Ochaco reveals that the real reason she became a hero was in order to get money for her family, and Ochaco herself worries that she is SecretlySelfish and isn’t being a hero for the right reasons. However, she is reassured that wanting to get money to financially support her family is still a noble cause in it’s own right and Ochaco is just such a NiceGirl that she can’t help but rescuing people for it’s own sake anyway from the get-go, proving her as an AllLovingHero just like Izuku.
* TheApprentice: For the Hero Agency Internships, Ochaco chooses to become a temporary apprentice towards Gunhead, believing that it will help her improve her physical fighting capabilities as well as offer her new perspectives and opportunities. Future battles would show that these lessons paid off as she is now capable of taking opponents down with her body alone.
* ArchEnemy: Is steadily but surely being set up as one for her EvilCounterpart Toga, as Toga's violent obsession with her, violent obsessions with her close friend Tsuyu and crush Midoriya, wanton murder of innocents, and [[spoiler:confessing to using Uraraka's own Quirk to murder somebody]] has made Uraraka personally determined to stop Toga herself. Was initially one-sided, as Toga genuinely sees herself as Uraraka's friend; However things are more up in the air following [[spoiler:Toga's heartbroken reaction to Uraraka rejecting her friendship/love again during their second encounter]].
* ArtisticLicensePhysics: Her powers frequently don't make much sense compared to actual zero gravity,[[note]]The most common issue being that both inertia and mass would remain without gravity. If she touched a falling object, its speed would stop increasing but it would continue at the velocity it had when she touched it. Also, if she removed gravity from a massive object, it wouldn't bounce around like a beach ball. Uraraka would be able to move it, but only very slowly after pushing against it for several seconds (in the same way that you can move a huge boat in a calm harbor if you are persistent enough).[[/note]] although they make considerably more sense if you assume that she also reduces the ''mass'' of whatever she touches to nearly zero.[[note]]This would explain how un-gravitating Midoriya saved him from smashing into the ground--with a lower terminal velocity, the air would act like a cushion, slowing him to a survivable speed. The scene where she swings a giant concrete pillar like a baseball bat also works far better if you assume that she reduced its mass to something manageable. This is generally what people imagine happening in zero gravity, because it's described as "weightlessness", but weight and mass aren't the same thing. Weight is mass scaled to gravitational strength; lower gravity lets you lift heavier objects, but the same amount of force is still required to move them.[[/note]]
* BadassAdorable: A cute and sweet girl, who between her control of gravity and managing to even give [[GeniusBruiser Katsuki Bakugou]] a hard time during the U.A. Championship is happy to show you she's got what it takes to be a heroine.
* BareFistedMonk: She interned under Gunhead to learn how to fight, and she definitely took a lot from his martial arts tutelage. She appears to have continued training even after her internship ended as her martial arts skills are the best of Class 1-A.
* BareMidriffsAreFeminine:
** The cheerleader outfit she wears during the Sports Festival shows her belly button, which she doesn't seem to mind, initially.
** During the BeachEpisode, she wears a two piece bikini.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: While Ochaco did save Izuku from falling during her EstablishingCharacterMoment, where there specific friendship really began was when he saved her from being crushed during the Entrance Exam. She’s also on the receiving end, due to stopping Izuku from falling albeit by slapping him, as well as offering some of her points to him.
* BestFriend: Not only is Ochaco the love interest for Izuku, [[FirstFriend she is also the first real friend that he ever had]] and is one of his best ones alongside [[ClassRepresentative Tenya.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Ochaco Uraraka, a cute and charming girl whose main drive is to be a hero to support her family, and displays a cheerful disposition with everyone. But don't underestimate her sweet nature: when push comes to shove, she can push back with her gravity powers:
** A good example of this is when she lost to Bakugo in the U.A. Sports Festival, but she showed real ingenuity in their battle, and came close to beating him.
** Believe it or not, her Quirk itself is actually one of the more inherently dangerous ones compared to a lot of other Quirks. As demonstrated by [[spoiler:Toga using her Quirk while [[ShapeShifter transformed]] into her, Uraraka can very easily kill by floating people up to fatal heights and just allowing them to fall. The only thing stopping her is her own moral compass]].
* BigBeautifulWoman: By Japanese standards, she's supposed to be on the plump side, though even then it seems like an InformedAttribute. Plump or not, she's still adorable.
* BirdsOfAFeather: Played with but ultimately [[DefiedTrope defied.]] Izuku and Ochaco seem very similar, with their in-sync reactions to their classmates' eccentricities, how they bounce of Iida's overly serious demeanor, and their own matching designs. The buck stops when Ochaco realizes Izuku's self-sacrificing nature is born from some deep-rooted self-esteem issues, and decides to look after him so he doesn't [[HisOwnWorstEnemy destroy himself.]] This is unlike her who has a fairly healthy understanding of her abilities and shortcomings. It also doesn't quite fit once you see how extroverted and open Ochaco is compared to the introverted and naturally reserved Izuku.
* BizarreHumanBiology: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. She looks completely anthropomorphic, with the exception of distinct soft pads on her fingertips, which she uses to activate her Quirk.
* BloodKnight: While she's normally optimistic and fairly reserved, events like the Sports Festival show that Ochaco can have a love for battle and in general she is a fan of “manly” things. She is also the only girl who actually appreciates Kirishima's masculine room, while Mina has a non-reaction and Hagakure finds it disgusting.
* BlushSticker: She has small permanent ones which highlight her cuteness and innocence; they're even noted as a CharmPoint in the character descriptions. She inherited the blush stickers from her mother, who also has them.
* BoxingLessonsForSuperman: Almost literally. Uraraka's main method of improving as a hero was to learn martial arts from Gunhead to supplement her natural-born superhuman ability.
* BoyishShortHair: Her hair is only about shoulder length and has bangs that only reach a quarter of the way down her forehead, and while she does have feminine traits, she is still a GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak.
* BrainyBrunette: She has auburn brown hair, and while she isn’t the smartest character in the series, she is shown to be very skilled at planning, reading people, and responding to emergency situations. (See HiddenDepths below.)
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: Never fails to bolster Izuku when he lapses into his more self-deprecating tendencies. [[spoiler:This rears its head most prominently when attempting to convince Izuku to come back to U.A. alongside the rest of 1A after he's gone full brooding mode as a filth-covered trailblazer tackling Japan's most dangerous escaped criminals all by himself. She is one of the driving forces behind bringing him home through her compassion and love for him combining with her desire to make the general public happy to see heroes again.]]
* CallBack: Twofold. [[spoiler:She welcomes Izuku back to U.A. by shouting down the mass of refugees trying to kick him out, setting Izuku back on the path he had strayed from in his rush to save everybody. This calls back to her setting him on his feet again after he tripped before the entrance exam, along with All Might officially welcoming Izuku to U.A. in his acceptance video by repeating his words almost entirely verbatim.]]
-->[[spoiler:'''Ochaco:''' ''This place is his hero academia! Let him stay here!'']]
* CannotSpitItOut: She can't talk about Midoriya in even a light romantic context with her friends without blushing up a storm and has never directly ''admitted'' even in her inner thoughts that she likes him, let alone brought it up with the boy himself. But she has acknowledged that some "feelings" exist.
* CharacterDevelopment:
** Following the Internship Arc, Uraraka decides she wants to be a heroine in order to save people, whereas her original motive was to look after her family.
** She also gets some development when she chooses to put aside her growing feelings for Midoriya as she [[LoveIsAWeakness starts to believe they'll distract her from her hero studies.]] Though Toga thinks she's making the wrong choice, time will tell how she grows as a hero going forward with her new resolve.
** After losing to Bakugou, who only used one shot to completely blast through Uraraka's plan, she realized just how [[GlassCannon powerless and weak she is without being able to rely on her Quirk]], and in order to become a hero she needs to get stronger, which led her to train under Gunhead and learn some basic combat skills.
** After first hand witnessing Sir Nighteye die trying to save Eri, and even more, seeing Deku keep selflessly saving people by harming himself, it makes her question if a hero's job is to save people from pain, then "who'll save the heroes when the heroes need saving?" Which further cements her goal to become a support/saving hero to other heroes as well as civilians.
** She's further developed when she faced off Toga again in the War arc, for the first time she sees the vulnerable and human side of a villain, it's the moment when things became less black/white for her.
** In the beginning, Ochaco was on friendly terms with Izuku. However, as time went on, she soon became incredibly flustered when Izuku and her tried to talk to each other like at the mall. Originally, Izuku was one of the people that Ochaco spoke to the most, excluding the girls. However, by the time of the final offensive, the two of them are able to openly speak to and compliment each other and openly discuss what their individual plans are to each other.
* CharacterTics: She is always careful not to touch anything with open hands to avoid accidentally triggering her Quirk; she also frequently holds her hands in paw-like fists so as not to accidentally touch something.
* CheeryPink: Her ColorMotif is pink, and she has a very optimistic and outgoing personality.
* ChekhovsSkill: After her internship with Gunhead, Uraraka begins developing her skills in close-quarters combat. This becomes very instrumental in her match with Thirteen, allowing her to turn the tide in her favor, and helps her stand her ground against Toga.
* ChildLikeVoice: With a spirited, gentle and innocent personality and facial features resembling a small child, Uraraka's Japanese voice actress gives her a very high, sweet voice to match.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: It’s notable that Ochaco openly defies this trope. She sees Izuku repeatedly putting his own safety below the lives of others, and how Hero Society in general encourages such behavior and begins asking herself “Who saves the heroes who need saving” and decides to become that person herself.
* ClarkKentOutfit: The girl has got a buxom that actually takes Izuku back whenever he first sees it, however, it’s not obvious underneath her school uniform.
* ClassicalAntiHero: Ochaco’s main hindrances are her own lack of self confidence, [[CantSpitItOut and her inability to act on her feelings towards Izuku.]]
* ClingyJealousGirl:
** {{Downplayed|Trope}}; while Uraraka is clearly bothered by some of the attention that Midoriya attracts from Hatsume and later Camie, she never actually breaks out into a jealous fit. She's also visibly shocked when [[EvenTheGuysWantHim Aoyama hand-feeds Midoriya]]. A lot of this rooted to her [[CannotSpitItOut having trouble sorting out her own feelings towards him]].
** Played entirely and hilariously straight in ''Two Heroes'' where she terrifies Izuku with her [[DissonantSerenity hollowly nonchalant attitude]] upon catching him on a tour of I-Island alone with Melissa. She's flanked by [[RomanticWingman Momo and Kyoka]] who came along for the trip, concerned Izuku uses his [[DoggedNiceGuy gentle demeanor]] to lure in women like Ochaco and [[BitchInSheepsClothing play them]]. It's all a big misunderstanding, of course.
* ColorMotifs: Two - Brown ("Cha" in her name, literally meaning Tea, is also used in the Japanese name for brown "Chairo", and she has a brown hair and eyes) and Pink (she has traces of the color on her suit, it shows up when she uses her Quirk, and it often appears in the background during frames that specifically focus on her. It highlights her cheerful, romantic and optimistic nature.)
* CombinationAttack: With Tsuyu, they can use the combo move Meteor Fafrotskies — Uraraka levitates debris and Tsuyu, and Tsuyu uses her tongue to throw the debris. They first use it against two giant villains during their internship with Ryukyu.
* TheConfidant: To Izuku, at least whenever the subject isn’t about romance. While he is generally open about his feelings, Ochaco especially is someone he can be honest with about his doubts, insecurities, beliefs, and fears. [[spoiler: This becomes most evident on the eve before the final offensive, where Izuku tells Ochaco how he truly feels in regards to Tomura, and she does to same to him in regards to Toga.]]
* CooldownHug: When Izuku's Quirk goes out of control and awakens a new aspect because he was enraged at Monoma blaming Bakugo for All Might's retirement, Ochaco jumps in with one of these. While it doesn't itself calm Izuku down, it does provide an opportunity for Shinso to brainwash him into shutting his Quirk down.
* CoolPeopleRebelAgainstAuthority: Downplayed. Ochaco doesn’t actively go against authority, just authority that she believes isn’t beneficial at the current moment, like rushing over to confront Himiko Toga against Asui Tsuyu’s advice, or [[spoiler: helping to restrain Izuku’s Blackwhip Quirk rather than following protocal and waiting for a teacher.]]
* CrushBlush: All it takes is the mere mention that she has a crush on Izuku for her face to start lighting up.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Has brown hair and brown eyes. Adds to her cheery and sweet disposition.
* CuteBruiser: The girl is adorable, but she is very well-versed in self-defense martial arts, enough to bring SerialKiller Toga to the ground and be considered a threat.
* TheCutie: Ochaco is an optimistic, energetic, polite, and adorable young girl who just wants to help everyone that she can.
* DaddysGirl: Wanted to help out at her dad's construction company as a kid, but he refused because he wanted her to achieve her own dream. Her father also consoles her after she loses against Bakugo during the U.A. Sports Festival.
* DamselInDistress: Played with during the entrance exam. Midoriya rushes in to save her without a second thought when he sees her trapped under some debris. He succeeds but can't control his landing after he punches out the robot, resulting in Uraraka saving ''him'' with her gravity powers.
* ADayInTheLimelight: She gets a decent amount of play in the main story but the anime decides to expand on her and Tsuyu's post-Christmas work study with returning characters from the latter's own season 2 filler episode. We learn that the girls were dealing with drug smugglers at about the same time Izuku and the boys were dealing with Shoto's rather, uh... ''unique'' [[DysfunctionalFamily family.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Ochaco of all people will occasionally let out a snide remark whenever she sees any form of subtext concerning Midoriya and another girl.
* DeathFromAbove: A strong attack she nearly beat Bakugo with. She gathers various objects that she made float, and then makes them fall at once. If only she hadn't pointed it out to him before unleashing it...
* DeathOrGloryAttack: The DeathFromAbove attack she pulled on Bakugo during the U.A. Sports Festival. She passed her weight limit accumulating projectiles in the hopes that dropping them all on Bakugo would distract him enough to give her the upper hand. It fails, because he had a heavy hit in reserve (and because she made him notice it by stopping), and she's instead left too exhausted to continue the match. This is acknowledged in-universe.
* DemotedToExtra: She's present for the Internship Arc, but is largely separate from the action.
* {{Determinator}}: Proves to be this in her fight against Bakugo, taking explosion after explosion to set up a massive rain of debris to rain down upon him. In the end while it fails and she collapses from HeroicRRoD, she manages to impress sponsors and land herself some internship offers.
* EmotionsVsStoicism: Downplayed as both Ochaco and Izuku are very emotional people, however sometimes Izuku will sink deep into his introverted and melancholic nature which will require the extroverted and optimistic Ochaco to help pull him back out of it.
* EpicFlail: Her "Zero Satellites" move. By attaching her wrist cables to multiple floating objects she’s touched, she can swing them around to hit an opponent.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: On his way to the U.A. Entrance Exam, Deku is so lost in his own thoughts that he isn't paying attention to where he's stepping and ends up tripping. Before he can fully fall, though, Uraraka levitates him with her Quirk and wishes him good luck before taking off. Though this is an incredibly brief interaction, it's one that solidifies Uraraka's character. It shows that she's someone selfless who will help others even if she doesn't know them personally, a trait which she shares with the protagonist.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: When the likes of Aoyama and [[ShipperOnDeck Mina]] begin to catch on to her feelings for Izuku, Ochaco becomes extremely flustered and has a tendency of using her Quirk erratically. Eventually the rest of the class clearly come to see she's crushing on him, with a few like Tsuyu giving subtle signs of support and encouragement for when Ochaco is finally ready to confess.
* EyePop: One of the most epic in fictional history, with one eye popping out so far ''her mother needs to push it back in.'' This also implies it's not the first time it's happened either...
* FanGirl:
** Of Thirteen, likely due to how her "Black Hole" Quirk has a similar gravity theme to her own.
** She's a fan of hero dramas in general. She loves it whenever Bakugo acts like a proper rival to Midoriya, excitedly calling it "the fated battle between men".
** She is a fangirl of Midoriya himself, showing constant admiration for how smart, kind, selfless, and determined he is. When she ran into him on the first day of class, she enthusiastically recalled how he defeated the robot with a punch, and she respects him so much during the U.A. Sports Festival that she actually feels bad about herself for leaning on him. During the climax of her fight with Bakugo, she is motivated by two things - her family ''and Midoriya''. She starts to develop a crush on him around this time, but chooses to focus on her own growth first.
* FanOfUnderdog:
** Was initially one of these as Midoriya's constant support and the only one to completely believe in him since the start. However, this stops applying once others start seeing how capable he really is.
** She gets to be on the receiving end from Present Mic who behaves this way during her fight against [[HavingABlast Bakugo,]] openly stating he's rooting for her to win. She doesn't, but she put up a damn good fight.
* FanservicePack: A year of training at U.A. to be a hero along with puberty make her noticeably more voluptuous in the second half of the story. Her bust doesn't grow a considerable amount, but her wide hips and thighs are on display in a few panels and it's clear she's done a lot of growing physically, not just mentally.
* FastballSpecial: Does this a lot with her Quirk. Since she can remove things from gravity for a time, turning it back on suddenly gives something a lot of momentum.
* FatalFlaw: Initially, Ochaco saw [[LoveIsAWeakness her admiration of Izuku as a flaw that she needed to overcome.]] Now, her FatalFlaw has become her constant desire to supress her feelings for Izuku resulting in her being unable to properly communicate with him.
* FirstFriend: She's the first person Midoriya's age to befriend him at U.A., turning his EmbarrassingNickname into an AppropriatedAppellation and brings him out of his shell with her constant cheeriness and support for him.
* FishOutOfWater: When it comes to hand-to-hand fighting, Ochaco doesn't show any strong skills fighting in close combat. This lack of skill becomes problematic. After all, as other characters point out, this type of combat is necessary when she needs to be near her opponent to use her Quirk. Ochaco understands this problem. As a result, she picks a mentor who is the complete opposite of her. Her mentor, Gunhead, is tall, strong, and experienced when it comes to hand-to-hand combat. So he teaches her skills that she uses when she fights. It’s somewhat downplayed though, by the fact that, for being so unfamiliar with them, she does take to learning martial arts rather easily and quickly.
* {{Flight}}: With enough training and the use of some trusty cables built into her new gauntlets, Uraraka is zipping around in the air [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/bokunoheroacademia/images/0/03/Chapter_248.png/revision/latest?cb=20200306123033 with style.]]
* {{Foil}}: To Bakugo. Ochaco is bright, bubbly, and goes out of her way to be friends with Izuku after he saved her while Bakugo is anti-social and aggressive, going out of his way [[InferioritySuperiorityComplex to be a jackass to Izuku]] after he tried to help him out of a stream when they were kids. Moreover, Bakugo did have a large hand in pushing many of Izuku's self-destructive tendencies, and it's only when Izuku meets Ochaco that he starts getting over them and having confidence in himself. This is best demonstrated with the name "Deku", coined by Bakugo as a means of belittling Izuku, but Ochaco interprets it in a more hopeful way saying it gives her the feeling of "doing your best." Hence, seeing how positively she took it, Izuku makes it his hero name while continuing to deny Bakugo's hold over him as a bully.
** Final Act highlights their contrast again, [[spoiler:as Bakugo has a quiet, humble apology admitting he was wrong for bullying Izuku, while Ochaco has to shout over a raging crowd of refugees to see Izuku for the tired and scared boy he is, and how he keeps fighting despite all that adversity. They adopt traits of the other but flip them to reflect their personal relationships with Izuku in order to reach out to him when he needs it.]]
* FormFittingWardrobe: While her hero costume is nothing outrageous for a heroine, she actually [[LampshadeHanging points out the snug fit]] her first time wearing it because she didn't ''intend'' for it to be so skin-tight. Apparently, if the desired fit isn't explicitly specified, the companies that create hero costumes just default to SensualSpandex.
* GenkiGirl: Ochaco Uraraka is pretty cheery and passionate most of the time as well. In fact, WordOfGod states he deliberately invoked this trope when designing her to contrast with the pessimistic and [[ShrinkingViolet shy]] Midoriya.
* GentleTouchVsFirmHand: When it comes to their relationship with Izuku, Ochaco is the optimistic and loving gentle touch to Tenya’s stern, no-nonsense firm hand.
* GirlyBruiser: Is rather bubbly and even bashful at times. Can also knock you on your ass and put you in restraints before you even know what's happening.
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: She's a girl with a [[NiceGirl very warm]], [[GenkiGirl lively]], occasionally [[TheDitz ditzy]] and overall GirlNextDoor type of personality, her [[TrademarkFavoriteFood favorite food]] is [[SweetTooth mochi]], she has a tendency to cling onto her friends when she's [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/bokunoheroacademia/images/a/a9/Dorm_life_24_o%27clock.png/revision/latest?cb=20181123045212 scared]], and blushes up a storm whenever it comes to romance. Her hair is also [[BoyishShortHair kinda short]] [[spoiler: and later styled in [[TomboyishPonytail a ponytail]]]] and she is also shown to be quite entranced by 'manly' things much like Kirishima is, got ''insanely'' fired up about competing in the Sports Festival, and threw herself into learning martial arts to make up for her weaknesses.
* GirlNextDoor: She and Izuku aren’t neighbors, but her personality fits this trope perfectly, being open, approachable, nonjudgemental, and the closest thing that Izuku has to a best friend alongside Bakugo and Iida.
* GiveGeeksAChance: She develops a huge crush on Midoriya despite him being a consummate Fanboy and a total dork at the beginning of the series. He becomes much more confident and determined as the series progresses, but he still remains a huge super-hero geek which doesn't whet her interest in the slightest. Izuku Midoriya/Deku mostly reciprocates the attraction. But given [[TwiceShy just how shy and awkward both are around each other,]] they remain JustFriends for now, even though it's quite clear from their interactions that both care deeply for each other in ways that are beyond platonic.
* GoodCannotComprehendEvil: Her second encounter and argument with Toga during the Paranormal War Arc essentially boils down to them not being able to understand each other; Uraraka cannot understand how Toga could just flippantly kill people without a care in the world or a shred of guilt, while Toga [[EvilCannotComprehendGood cannot understand why Uraraka desires to save other people but stops Toga from doing what she wants]]. The encounter leaves Toga upset and Uraraka unsettled, unclear of where to go from there.
* GoodIsNotDumb: While her grades are really nothing to write home about, Ochaco has demonstrated the ability to come up with complex strategies right on the spot with very little assistance which fully utilize the strengths of her Quirk, allowing her to reach third place in U.A.'s rigorous Entrance Exam and tenth place during Eraser Head's Quirk Apprehension Test. She has also displayed some remarkable amounts of intelligence in other areas as well. (See HiddenDepths below.)
* GoodIsNotSoft: While she is usually reserved and polite, when people are threatening to harm innocents, she shows that she is not one to take that lightly, subduing her foes with any number of grappling, take down, and throwing maneuvers mixed with her gravity Quirk. She even slaps Izuku in the face at two points, one to stop his fall in the entrance exam and the second to help snap him out of the [[spoiler:trance Shinso put him in to stop his Blackwhip Quirk from rampaging.]]
* GravityMaster: Her Quirk allows her to reduce the gravitational pull of whatever she touches to zero through pads on her fingertips, making it near weightless. Her main weakness is that if she overuses her powers she suffers vertigo symptoms.
* HasAType: A chapter from the first volume of ''School Briefs'' has her, Tsuyu, and Momo apprehending a petty thief who soiled himself before his date with his crush. Seeing his date still accept him and offer him a second chance makes her think of Izuku, classifying him as another "fixer upper" like the thief and understanding the appeal of a seemingly lost cause. Although Izuku has never had anything ''that'' embarrassing happen to him and eventually becomes 1-A's strongest student, implying she has more of a thing for the HiddenBadass type.
* HelmetsAreHardlyHeroic: Her original costume comes with a helmet, but events would often conspire to knock it off, leaving her head bare. She eventually forgoes the helmet when remodeling her costume in favor of futuristic headgear that gives a clear view of her face.
* HeroicRROD: If she overuses her power, which has a limit of 3 tons, she gets violently woozy. If she really overdoes it, she will collapse.
* HeroicSacrifice: Attempts a non-lethal version after the Entrance Exam by asking the U.A staff to give some of her points to Midoriya as thanks for saving her from the [[HumongousMecha 0-Pointer]]. However, this request gets turned down since Midoriya had already qualified with the hidden Rescue Points factor, but her request was still used in support of Midoriya further.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Uraraka can be hard on herself for what she considers less-than-heroic tendencies, from wanting to become a hero so that she can make money for her parents to feeling sympathy for people like Himiko Toga. Luckily for her, Midoriya reassures her that there's nothing wrong with feeling that way.
* HeroWorshipper: Ochaco slowly starts becoming this towards Izuku due to his heroic nature, but it’s also partially due to her own personal feelings towards him. Once she realizes this, she decides to try and bottle the feelings up, [[LoveIsAWeakness believing that they would only serve to hold her back.]]
* HesNotMyBoyfriend: During her internship, [[PluckyGirl Uraraka]] talks to [[TheHero Deku]] through the cell phone, and the Pro Hero Gunhead quickly assumes she's talking to her boyfriend. She denies it, [[EveryoneCanSeeIt but her later actions make it clear she's developed a crush on him.]]
* HiddenBuxom: [[ClarkKentOutfit While it isn't obvious when she wears her uniform]], her figure is made more visible in other outfits, most notably her skin-tight hero costume. When she wears her hero costume for the first time, it is so [[FormFittingWardrobe form-fitting]] that Midoriya is taken aback by her figure.
* HiddenDepths:
** Despite being a sweet girl with a somewhat goofy nature, she is actually really good at strategic planning and execution. She is also shown to think quite a bit about the future, deciding to intern with a battle-styled hero instead of a rescue operations hero because she wants to be prepared for any situation.
** A special chapter shows she's very good at reading people as she is able to pinpoint and explain the reasons for Bakugo's rivalry with Midoriya. She was also the first to notice when the calm and collected Tsuyu was upset about something.
** She's extremely good at quick action in crisis situations, and can almost shut her emotions off in a focused trance when someone is in danger. [[spoiler:The Yakuza raid and Midoriya's rampaging Quirk immediately come to mind]]. The aftermath of said situations, on the other hand, is very hard on her.
* HighHeelPower: Her hero costume comes with high heels and she's an ActionGirl who can kick asses any time. This is justified as her heels are spring loaded and act as shock absorbers when she lands.
* HighPressureEmotion: Blushes red as a tomato whenever she catches herself getting [[NoSenseOfPersonalSpace too close]] to Izuku or other people bring up how intimate she is with the boy.
* HopeBringer: [[spoiler:After an exhausting search and retrieval of Izuku after he runs off on his own to protect his friends, he's brought back to U.A. only to hear chants from the crowd of refugees inside urging him to leave. Foisting more of their problems on him and essentially sending him out to die. He's about to listen and depart when Ochaco grabs his hand, vowing to herself she's not letting him go. Then she marches straight to the crowd of protestors to force them into letting him stay]].
* TheIdiotFromOsaka: While not present for the most part, her face-to-face interactions with her parents are the most genuinely slapstick-like, including an EyePop that her mother ''helps push back in''.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: Uraraka is this to Izuku. He's definitely expressed some attraction to her, and especially early on [[CannotTalkToWomen gets flustered while talking to her.]] He also instantly shifts from hating his childhood nickname "Deku" to [[AppropriatedAppellation adopting it as his own]] (eventually even using it as his hero name) because Uraraka said she likes it ([[ClassRepresentative Iida]] even Lampshades how abrupt this is), and this happens when they've only known each other for less than a day. It's now definite that she has a crush on him, but so far [[LoveIsAWeakness she's chosen not to distract herself by pursuing it.]]
* InASingleBound: In the early chapters, this tended to be how Uraraka used her power on herself, as being floaty usually made the side effects of her Quirk significantly worse. After training it though, Uraraka can now use her power on herself with almost no repercussions, essentially giving her the ability to fly.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: While she initially appears to only be a hero in order to get money, she is shown to be inherently a purely sweet girl, and eventually she decides that she wants to be a hero in order to save everyone.
* InstantExpert: It's a little startling how good she gets at martial arts in so little time.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: The first time she wears her hero costume, she unintentionally renders Midoriya uncomfortable with arousal because she didn't know when filing the request for a uniform the company would assume skintight materials unless otherwise instructed.
* JerkassToOne: The Drawing Smash exhibition had the franchise's main characters doing commentary on various exhibits, and on all of the ones she's partnered with Bakugo on, ''she won't stop picking on him.'' Izuku can only watch on nervously as she slyly tears Bakugo several new ones. This coming from the resident PluckyGirl shows she strongly disapproves of Bakugo's repugnant attitude and his terrible treatment of Izuku up until post-License Exam.
* LargeHam: Ochaco has a few moments where she is this, due to her cheerful and energetic nature, it especially manifests whenever she gets flustered in regards to her crush on Izuku.
* LatexSpaceSuit: Her hero costume is a form-fitting suit with a helmet that resembles an astronaut's. She was going for the space theme when designing it. Not so much the [[FormFittingWardrobe form-fitting]] part.
* LeaveHimToMe: [[spoiler:Urges Izuku to hurry ahead and get to where Shigaraki is after Toga pulls him through a portal and derails their plan to defeat the villains. She wishes him good luck, implicitly urging him to accomplish his goal of saving Shigaraki while she stays behind and tries to save Toga in turn.]]
* LethalHarmlessPowers: Her Quirk generally isn't combat-oriented and Uraraka herself typically doesn't use it on other people, but when [[spoiler:Toga mimics her Quirk, she uses it to float Curious and her followers high into the air before releasing them to splatter on the concrete below]].
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: With Toga. She mostly embodies positive femininity and a rather sunny and wholesome personality, while Toga embodies negative femininity with her sadistic and twisted personality.
* LightIsGood: Her costume and ColorMotif consist of bright pink and she is an AllLovingHero.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: Downplayed. Both Midoriya's mother and Uraraka have gravity-themed Quirks, soft features, a fondness for pink clothing, and sweet personalities.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Izuku. [[spoiler:After being homeless, caked in blood and filth, and about to be lynched by the U.A. refugees like how he was ostracized in his early life, the first time his eyes regain some of their old light is hearing Ochaco passionately defend him. No other person has ever stood up for him like this, and it clearly leaves a deep impression on him]].
* LookalikeLovers: Uraraka shows romantic feelings towards Midoriya, and both of them have [[https://comicbook.com/anime/news/my-hero-academia-izuku-midoriya-ochaco-uraraka-same-face-meme/ similar-looking faces]].
* LoveIsAWeakness: Downplayed. It's not so much that she considers love a weakness as much as she considers it a distraction from her studies. Uraraka is close friends with Midoriya, but it's evident that she has more than platonic feelings for him. However, because of the competitive program for heroes, at least in Japan, she sees her feelings as getting in the ways of her goal. As such, she has been suppressing her romantic feelings for him and trying to [[JustFriends just enjoy their friendship]]. That doesn't mean they've gone away for good, it just means she's used a stopgap measure to avoid dealing with them.
* LovelyAngels: She can be this with Tsuyu. The two easily cooperate with each other while as seen during their fight against Himiko Toga and also both do the Hero Work-Studies together at the Ryukyu agency, where to the point that they have created a Super Move by combining their respective Quirks: Meteor Fafrotskies which was used against a giantified villain.
* LuminescentBlush: Ochaco has a few of these whenever her crush on Izuku is brought to the forefront of her mind.
* MadeOfIron: She's quite tougher than she looks, as she tanks several of Bakugo's typical explosions before finally being knocked unconscious after forcing him to use his full power. Her Quirk has nothing to do with tanking explosions. This earns her respect from Bakugo himself, as he rejects Kaminari's notions that he's fighting a "frail" girl.
* MeaningfulName: Her name managed to be both this and PunnyName at the same time... on '''two''' levels!
** "Uraraka" means "bright." "Ochaco" can be derived from the expression "ocha no ko" (roughly meaning "piece of cake!") or "ochappii" (a chatterbox girl). This all illustrates her bright, cheerful, NiceGirl personality.
** Uraraka's full name is written 麗日お茶子. 日 (''ka'') can be alternatively pronounced as ''bi''; meanwhile, 茶 (''cha'') translates to "tea", which in Japanese phonology is rendered ティ (''ti''[[note]]Not to be confused with ち (''chi'' in Hepburn romanization), which is rendered in some romanization systems as ''ti''.[[/note]]). Contracting the pronunciation of 麗 (''urara'') to just ''ura'', it can be combined with 日's ''bi'' pronunciation and the Japanese transliteration of "tea", creating ウラビティ (''Urabiti''), which is both the Japanese pronunciation of Uraraka's codename "Uravity" and just a consonant away from ''guraviti'' ("gravity"), the crux of her Quirk.
* MeetCute: Izuku Midoriya is going to the [[SuperheroSchool UA High]] to take the entry exam, and accidentally trips over his feet. Luckily for him, Ochaco Uraraka happens to be nearby and uses her [[GravityMaster Zero Gravity Quirk]] to stop him from falling flat on his face. She apologizes for using her Quirk without permission, and after giving some words of encouragement goes on her way. Izuku is excited over [[CannotTalkToWomen having talked to a girl, even though he didn't actually say anything.]]
* MsFanservice: Both her school uniform and hero costume elicit dumbstruck reactions from Midoriya. She's also seen wearing a bikini twice. She is also prone to blatant MaleGaze shots.
* MundaneUtility: It's pointed out that her powers would be incredibly helpful in her parents' construction business, and the only reason she doesn't is because they wanted her to have her own life rather than get stuck following their career.
* NerdsAreSexy: Amusingly, as detailed in one of the light novels, she's the only girl at the training camp slumber party that finds Midoriya's All Might geeking as a ''positive'', while the rest of the girls unanimously dismiss him as boyfriend material on the grounds that he'd "probably take you on a date to an All Might meet and greet". [[FanOfUnderdog Uraraka sees no problem with such a scenario and is quietly annoyed by their conclusion]].
* NiceGirl: Uraraka is a very friendly and charming person overall. Even her OnlyInItForTheMoney motivations behind pursuing heroism are out of concern for her family rather than greed or anything of the sort, and she very quickly learns to value heroism for its own sake anyway. It is heavily implied that the reason Midoriya is attracted to her is [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe because she was the only human being who was nice to him]] when nobody except his own mother and All Might was (and even they didn't exactly help, his mother [[InnocentlyInsensitive never tried to support his dreams of becoming a hero]] after finding out he is quirkless and All Might [[BrutalHonesty flat out told him]] [[BreakHisHeartToSaveHim that hero work involves risk and someone who doesn't have a quirk can't hope to be one]]). Not only did Ochaco warmly greet him after saving him from faceplanting to the ground right before the entrance exams, she even offered to give him some of her points, after realising that he didn't score a single point because he tried to rescue her.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: Of the three students Izuku has a close relationship with when he first attends U.A. Ochaco is the “Nice” to Bakugo’s “Mean”, and Tenya’s “In-Between”. Of those three, Ochaco is the most gentle and supportive to Izuku.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: She has a habit of getting right up in Midoriya's face, which [[ShipTease flusters]] the guy to no end. By episode 40 of the anime, she realizes how she's gotten far too comfortable with this (not to mention recognizing her own attraction to him) and starts acting as embarrassed as he does.
* NotQuiteFlight: She can use her Quirk on herself to achieve this, though in the beginning of the manga, she avoided doing it because it tended to make her nausea side effect several times worse. However, after training extensively, she can now float herself with barely any repercussions.
* NotTheFallThatKillsYou: Her power can arrest the momentum of an object but can't do so immediately. When saving Midoriya from a lethal fall, Uraraka pointedly floats herself up into the air to create space for him to slow down before coming to a stop.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Her initial reason for becoming a heroine is to earn money for her parents now that their construction company is out of work. When confessing this, she felt embarrassed that it wasn't for more pure-hearted reasons. However, it's heavily {{downplayed}}, as she's still an incredibly kindhearted girl who still wants to help people, and the others reassure her that doing so for her family is a noble and understandable motivation. It's also phased out as the story goes on and certain events, starting with [[spoiler:Nighteye's death]], make her reconsider why she became a heroine.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** Everyone thinks it's weird when she gets aggressively fired up about the U.A. Sports Festival, even knowing how important doing well there can be for an aspiring hero's career. It turns out that she has a good reason.
** Even though Ochaco tends to be kind and friendly, there are times when she becomes intense. During one of her classes, Ochaco and Aoyama have to fight against a Pro Hero. When sparring with the hero, Ochaco gets yanked towards a black hole. Because of her practice with Gunhead, Ochaco's reflexes kick in. She uses the pull from the black hole to get herself into a position to handcuff the teacher. When she begins to make her move, Ochaco's bright brown eyes turn white. Ochaco flips the hero onto her back, cuffing her hand behind her back.
** This actually ends up being exploited by Izuku. During the Hero License Exam, Uraraka is struck by a rival student's Quirk and falls from the platform and doesn't try to float. Midoriya lampshades how odd this is and it turns out [[spoiler: it's not Uraraka at all; it's actually Camie — actually Himiko — posing as her. At the time, Himiko didn't yet know that she could use Uraraka's Quirk while transformed into her.]]
* OppositesAttract: Ochaco (extroved and open) has a mutual crush on Izuku (introverted and emotionally reserved).
* OutOfFocus: Particularly in the Field Training and Hideout Raid Arcs where her appearances are minimal, limited to maybe one or two conversations with other characters. The [[AdaptationExpansion anime adaptation]] mitigates her lack of appearances in the former, where she is given a lot more scenes and her training with Gunhead is shown in full.
* PassionateSportsGirl: Whenever it came time for the Sports Festival, Ochaco got more fired up [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness then she had ever been up to that point,]] fully determined to give it her all.
* PennyAmongDiamonds: While not everybody in U.A. is rich like Ida, Todoroki and Yaoyorozu, most seem to be upper-middle-class. Uraraka, however, has stated that her family is poor, and that being able to make money and provide for them is her motivation to be a heroine. This does tend to be Played for Laughs, as she often comically faints when confronted with something lavish, like Yaoyorozu worrying about a trip to Venice or how utterly fancy Heights Alliance is compared to her humble abode. Uraraka tries to defy the trope of being TheIdiotFromOsaka by speaking standard Japanese instead of her native Osaka dialect and not telling anyone about her poor family life, but earning money for her parents from hero work is her motivation.
* PinkHeroine: She has traces of pink throughout her costume, her Quirk manifests as a pink color, and she is an AllLovingHero.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Her hero costume is primarily pink, white, and black.
* PluckyGirl: Several characters have described her as "bright", [[PunnyName which is reflected in her name]], because of her overly positive nature. She is also very determined when she wants to be. This is somewhat {{enforced|Trope}}, as Creator/KoheiHorikoshi thought this kind of character would interact well with the more [[SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl introverted and pessimistic Midoriya]].
* PowerFloats: Through her Zero Gravity Quirk, Ochaco can make anything solid float in mid-air as long as they are within the weight limit of her Quirk, which is around three tons. Eventually, it gets to the point that she is making an entire plane float and even her own body.
* PreBattleBanter: [[spoiler:On the eve of the final offensive, she shares a tender heart-to-heart alone with Izuku who thanks her for standing up for him against the refugee mob who tried to kick him out of U.A. and discuss the viability of saving Toga and Shigaraki despite their horrific crimes. [[ShipTease Along with telling her how perfect her hair is]].]]
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: Ochaco Uraraka wears gray tights with her school uniform, representing her properness and how nice she is. There is also practicality involved, as her Quirk of anti-gravity has her floating in mid-air quite often.
* PovertyForComedy: Bar none has the roughest go of it of all the U.A. hero course students financially and it's played for laughs a fair amount. Even after upgrading to the dorms she's overwhelmed by even the most mundane of luxuries compared to being forced to sweat like a pig in her apartment or even ''starve'' some days.
* PowerIncontinence: Her Quirk activates on anything she touches with all five pads on her fingers regardless of intent, so she's usually careful to hold things with one finger off. She even wears mittens in bed to keep her Quirk from inadvertently floating things in her sleep.
* PunnyName: Her name managed to be both this and MeaningfulName at the same time. One of the kanji in "Uraraka" can be read as "bi". Meanwhile, "ocha" in "Ochaco" means "tea." Her name then can be read as "Urabi-tea." Add a "g" in front, and it's very close to the Japanese pronunciation of "gravity." This pun is also the basis of her hero name.
* PuppyLove: Downplayed. Ochaco and Izuku aren’t readily willing to openly admit their love for each other, but the countless ShipTease moments that they’ve had between each other still display this trope clearly.
* RedOniBlueOni:
** The easily excitable and extroveted red oni, to Izuku’s more emotionally reserved and introverted blue oni.
** Is also the more laid back blue oni to Tenya’s controlling LargeHam red oni.
** Ochaco is the more open and honest red oni compared to Tsuyu, who is aloof and has trouble expressing herself.
** She is the blue oni compared to Mina Ashido, who manages to be ''even more'' emotional and easily excitable than her.
** She is also the sane blue oni compared to Toga’s pshycotic red oni.
* ReedRichardsIsUseless: Lampshaded in the Smash extras. An object that doesn't conform to gravity would be a priceless boon to science (as an objective yardstick in a [[UsefulNotes/{{Relativity}} relative]] universe), but nobody ever thinks of this. Particularly egregious given her primary motivation for becoming a heroine is her desire to earn money for her family.
* RescueRomance: This gets played both ways with Izuku Midoriya and Ochaco Uraraka. During the entry exam for the UA High, Ochaco ends up with her leg pinned by some debris as a giant robot approaches. Disregarding his own safety and the fact that he needs to score points, Izuku rushes to jump in and [[MegatonPunch smashes the robot with a single punch to save her.]] Unfortunately, the strain of using his powers ends up leaving his limbs crippled and he plummets to the ground, but then Ochaco uses her [[GravityMaster zero-gravity]] powers to stop him before he hits the ground, saving him as well. As the story advances, it becomes evident that the two have developed feelings for each other, but they both are too shy to express them.
* RotatingProtagonist: She tends to fall in and out of focus depending on the arc. She gets a good spotlight in the Battle Trial, U.A. Sports Festival, Forest Training Camp, Provisional Hero License Exam, Internship, and Joint Training Arcs, but outside of that, she sometimes does not appear.
* RousingSpeech: [[spoiler:She gives a pretty badass one at the end of the Villain Hunt arc when she shouts down the crowd of refugees protesting Izuku's admittance back to the U.A. campus. She speaks at length about Izuku's qualities, and that it isn't fair to place so much burden on one person to make things easier. She makes it clear that for everybody to survive All For One and Shigaraki's reign of terror, they need to accept Izuku, nor can they treat anybody else with prejudice or hate because they're too scared or too lazy to make real change in society.]]
* RunningGag:
** Her costume helmet tends to get knocked off in combat. It actually becomes a plot point during the Provisional Hero License Exam Arc when Camie, [[spoiler:a.k.a. Toga]], assumes Ochaco's form with the helmet on, after Shindo shook the license testing site with a quake and caused the real Ochaco to lose hers. The very fact this other Ochaco still has a helmet hints that she's a fake. Eventually her costume alters it so it's a visorless headset that's less likely to fall off.
** Seeing Tenya take things too seriously, or hams up a performance, guarantees a spitting laugh from her.
** Her Quirk is sometimes activated on herself, or others, when ship teased about her and Izuku.
* SailorFuku: She's briefly seen wearing a regular school uniform when addressing Present Mic about Midoriya saving her during the U.A. entrance exam.
* SaveTheVillain: [[spoiler:Discusses this with Izuku before the final battle concerning Toga and Shigaraki. The two understand there's no forgiving them for what they've done, but they can't ignore their pain and resolve to save both of them if possible. Because that's what [[AllLovingHero being a hero]] is about.]]
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: With Midoriya. This is enforced by Horikoshi, who thought her PluckyGirl personality would play off Midoriya's introverted and pessimistic personality.
* SciFiBobHaircut: Sports a particularly round bob of brown hair and is the lead female character in a TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture setting where almost everybody possesses a mutation of some kind that grants them a superpower.
* SecretlySelfish: During the U.A. Sports Festival Arc, Uraraka comes to believe she is using Midoriya as a {{crutch|Character}} to help her advance after Ida declined to work with the two since, due to how the tournament works, they all are rivals to each other. Upon hearing this, she tells Midoriya and Ida how bad she feels about effectively using their friendship to get ahead, and strives to go all out to make it fair.
* SensualSpandex: Ochaco’s Hero uniform is skin-tight and despite her claiming it wasn’t supposed to be that way, she still hasn’t gotten it replaced, implying that she's grown into it.
* ShipTease: Ochaco Uraraka has had this with Izuku more than any other character with Uraraka being teased by others over her obvious feelings for Deku. Despite her denial at first, she eventually realizes she does have feelings for him, but puts them to the side for now to follow her dream.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Ochaco's main romantic interest throughout the series has always been Izuku. There’s no indication she ever had a crush in the past and she hasn’t displayed a crush towards anyone else since meeting him.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She develops a crush on Midoriya, who is a kind, helpful and friendly EndearinglyDorky boy who saved her during the Entrance Exam. As such, he's the only boy she has ever been shown to harbor romantic feelings toward, and even prior to realizing how she felt, she would often gush about him or be concerned for his well-being more than others. It enters deconstruction territory when she realizes these feelings [[LoveIsAWeakness could become a distraction]] that interferes with her judgment as a hero, so she tries to suppress them.
* SleepCute: In the third ending theme for My Hero Academia, Uraraka and Midoriya are both asleep on a bus while resting their heads on Iida's shoulders (and he's also asleep). It's cute and edges slightly into ThreesomeSubtext.
* SpitTake: Often spits out laughing whenever Tenya Iida goes LargeHam.
* SquishyWizard: With the right timing and planning, she can deal a lot of damage with her Quirk and has been absolutely vital to the victories of the main cast several times. However, because her Quirk drains her stamina so quickly, she often struggles with her defenses.
* StrongerThanTheyLook: Ochaco has a somewhat thin build, but that doesn’t stop her from throwing people and pinning them down with her bare arms and getting back up from multiple explosions by Bakugo.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Uraraka seems to have inherited most of her mother's looks — her skin complexion, hairstyle, and even the same [[BlushSticker blushed cheeks]], but she also has her father's spiky hair and bangs, brown eyes and [[UnusualEyebrows short and stubby eyebrows]]. She also shares her cheery personality with both of her parents.
* StunnedSilence: Will lapse into this with Izuku and Iida as a part of their dynamic whenever confronted with something shocking like Aizawa revealing he never intended to expel any student after the Quirk Apprehension test or Bakugo being... [[ComicalOverreacting Bakugo.]]
* SuperStrength: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with]]. Much like her [[NotQuiteFlight flying ability]], it isn't real super strength, but with her power, she can easily lift up to three tons and send it flying like a meteor at her opponent.
* SupportYourParents: She wants to become a pro heroine so she can financially support her parents, as their failing construction business has left them poor.
* TomboyishPonytail: [[spoiler: [[GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak While Ochaco isn’t that much of a tomboy]] as of Chapter 284, she has started wearing her hair as this style and has definitely evolved into more of an ActionGirl by this point.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: Invoked by Uraraka herself, when she joins a fighting hero for her one week hero internship, thinking that she'll be able to expand her skillset. She makes good on it too, as she is already knocking out villains with Gigantification Quirks with one special move. Later during the fight with Class 1-B, it isn't Midoriya who ends up being the one to take out most of the other team, it's Uraraka, who is responsible for half of the other team's members getting captured.
** [[spoiler: During her final battle against Toga, when the villain unleashed an army of evil clones of all the heroes on her; Ochaco's Quirk receives an [[EleventhHourSuperPower awakening]]. Now she's capable of using Zero Gravity without needing to touch her targets, this allowed her to push away all the evil clones with just a motion of her hand; much to the shock of Toga and everyone watching.]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Really likes mochi, and at one point recruited some of her classmates to help her get around a "limit one box per customer" restriction on a sale at the supermarket. Her Christmas present to Izuku is a pack of sliced mochi.
* TrickedOutShoes: Has a pair with spring heels to reduce falling impact as part of her hero costume.
* TwiceShy: Midoriya and she clearly harbor more than platonic feelings for one another but their mutual timidity and awkwardness make it nearly impossible for them to convey anything.
* TwoGuysAndAGirl: The girl to Izuku and Iida as the two guys.
* UnusualEyebrows: Opposed to most other characters, Ochaco's eyebrows are short and even shown as stubby sometimes to better frame her wide, circular eyes. This is likely to accentuate her PluckyGirl nature and help her stand out more.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Implied and downplayed. Ochaco shows a more aggressive side whenever it comes to Izuku’s and her relationship with him has so far been mostly ShipTease. Nevertheless, threatening or trying to harm Izuku is a quick and easy way to get Ochaco on your bad side.
* VomitDiscretionShot: After overexerting her powers to save Midoriya, Uraraka leans her head down just out of frame in order to throw up. We know she's not just gagging because it's [[RainbowPuke highlighted with rainbows and sparkles]]! Later on, she's shown trying to hold back again while Iida nervously fusses over her. This technique is used again in an anime-only episode in season 5, again after she overused her powers while on a mission.
* WaifFu: Uraraka is a seemingly dainty teenage girl, yet not only can she tank some pretty big hits but she also learns martial arts in just a week after attending an internship. She then incorporates these moves in tandem with her quirk to deliver some pretty sick takedowns in what is so far a rather brief career as a provisional hero.
* WeakButSkilled: According to the power rankings. Her power sits at a middling 2/5, but she's excellent at using it with a 5/5 in technique. This is downplayed later on as the series progresses as her power grows to a 4/6 (B-), but her technique is still stellar at 5/6 (A).
* WellDoneDaughterGirl: Initially, Ochaco’s main motivation for becoming a hero was to earn money for her parents and so that they would be proud of her. She was originally going to help her father with his construction, but her parents told her that she should follow her own dreams, and she eventually does decide she wants to save people for her own reasons.
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: At one point, all the other girls discuss and dismiss Izuku as boyfriend material due his dorkish nature and obssession with All-Might. Ochaco remarks that those are qualities that she likes about him.
* WhatWouldXDo: Has taken to asking herself "What Would Deku Do?" in dire situations, and is often seen aspiring to be like him.
* WhoWatchesTheWatchmen: She contemplates a variant in Chapter 212, wondering who helps the heroes when they need saving. This becomes a core part of her character development later on as Uraraka begins to contemplate the more psychological aspect of being a hero, realizing that taking care of peoples mental health is just as important as taking care of them physically, and that many people, hero and villain alike, are not getting the proper help they need.
* WomenPreferStrongMen: She is a huge fan of manly things and tends to get excited when she sees them. In the Dorm Room showoff, she was the only girl who liked Kirishima's room. While she doesn't like how Bakugo acts, she does get excited when he and Midoriya pull heavily on stock rivalry tropes.
* WorkingClassHero: Her family own a barely-afloat construction company and she sticks out compared to the more well off students of U.A.
* WorthyOpponent: Was acknowledged as one by Bakugo after their match. In the U.A. Sports Festival Arc, he takes their fight seriously because of what happened to him the last time he underestimated someone (during the Battle Trial Arc), and because he thought she'd have an ace up her sleeve because Midoriya would have given her some battle plan. [[RightForTheWrongReasons He was half right]]. After getting his facts straight from Midoriya himself, Bakugo begrudgingly acknowledged to himself [[{{Determinator}} she wasn't frail at all]].
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Changes Izuku's opinion on the nickname Deku and has him take what was a derogatory title as his hero name, saying it sounds like dekiru which means "never giving up." A new source of strength. Subsequently making Uraraka herself a primary source of Izuku's determination for the rest of the series.

->''"But this is the place everyone earned by clashing at their full power... I wouldn't feel right standing among you without even understanding how I got here, I just can't do it"''

A discreet yet determined student whose Quirk, "Tail", manifests as a thick, prehensile [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin tail]] which he can use as a third limb. He is also skilled at martial arts and has a deep sense of honor, but often struggles to stand out among his classmates, a fact he's himself is very aware of.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Monkeys, due to a mix of his tail and martial arts prowess. In the U.A. Sports Festival Arc, Shinso mockingly compares him to one and he's depicted as one in a piece of side art that portrayed all of Class 1-A (except Bakugo) as animals.
* BareFistedMonk: Unlike others whose fighting styles are based entirely on their Quirks, Ojiro fights using martial arts in combination with his tail for fast and acrobatic moves. His epithet is even "The Martial Arts Hero".
* BattleAmongstTheFlames: During the USJ battle, he was among the students warped to the fire disaster simulator. He's seen still easily dispatching some low-level villains after All Might punches the Nomu sky-high.
* BoringButPractical: His Quirk is as simple as it gets, to the point that it is used as an explanation for Quirk Factors in Chapter 135: a sturdy tail that can be used for attacking, movement or as a third arm. Very useful, but not exactly flashy.
* CharacterTics: In the manga, wagging his tail when excited.
* ColorMotif: White. The "Jiro" in his last name means White in Japanese, and his hero costume is White.
* FastballSpecial: He and Ida perform one in the anime when fighting Power Loader. With Ojiro's tail wrapped around his leg, Ida launches him at high speed towards the goal.
* FightsLikeANormal: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. A tail is not at all normal on the modern-day human, but he learned martial arts to supplement his tail as a weapon.
* TheGenericGuy:
** Chapter 98 shows the various rooms of Class 1-A. Midoriya's is basically an All Might shrine, Koda has pets in his room, and Tokoyami has a goth room. However, in contrast, Ojiro's room is completely plain and simple.
** This trait of his is continuously lampshaded, with other characters often remarking how ordinary he is.
* HumanFurnitureIsAPainInTheTail: An extra info page notes that his tail makes it tricky to sit in and get up from normal chairs, and he prefers ones that have holes in the back.
* HumbleHero: He's very self-aware and he knows that he's not the flashiest student around but he's making the best of what he has.
* InconsistentSpelling: His surname's proper spelling is "Ojiro", but some non-Japanese-speaking fans incorrectly spell it "Ojirou", assuming it uses the same rule as "Bakugo/Bakugou" or "Jiro/Jirou".
* MeaningfulName: "Mashirao" is a common Japanese name. It also includes the kanji for "tail".
* NiceGuy: Ojiro has also been shown to be very sweet and humble, as he is a very caring and empathetic person when it comes to the emotions and well-being of other people. A good example of this is during the Sports Festival, where he's visibly guilty about turning down Midoriya's request to team-up during the cavalry battle thanks to having so many points. He then informs him of Shinso's [[MindControl Brainwashing]] in the following round to make it up to him.
* NonUniformUniform: His school uniform pants and gym pants are custom-tailored with an opening for his tail. Additionally, he wears white sneakers instead of the usual brown dress shoes that are worn by almost all the other students.
* OutOfFocus: Stemming from his status as TheGenericGuy, Ojiro doesn't get much attention in regards to character development or unique combat techniques (having a fairly basic Quirk with some athletic moves and martial arts), and winds up being underutilized beyond a few scattered moments of attention, and isn't very prominent in movies and [=OVAs=].
* PhraseCatcher: Other students are always commenting on how plain/ordinary everything he does is.
* PrehensileTail: His Quirk gives him a thick, strong tail that he uses as an extra limb while doing martial arts.
* PutOnABus: Baring a cameo in the credits, he, Aoyama, and Koda are the only members of Class 1-A who don't appear in ''Anime/MyHeroAcademiaTwoHeroes''.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: He's occasionally shown playing the Savvy Guy to Hagakure's Energetic Girl.
* SkintoneSclerae: Weirdly enough, they end up making him look more Asian than the rest of the cast, who are prominently Japanese. This is averted in the anime, which whitens his eyes, and it seems like the author updated Ojiro's design to match in at least one subsequent color spread chapter of the manga, where some of the characters are modeling fashion.
* SpinAttack: During the Joint Training Arc, he demonstrates that he took this kind of attack as a specialty along with his trademark TailSlap. He's now capable of spinning his tail so hard it generates a [[BlowYouAway gust of wind]] strong enough to send his opponents flying.
* TailSlap: His tail is part of his martial arts repertoire.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: He seems completely unfazed by Denki regularly twiddling with his tail, especially its fluffy end.
* WeakButSkilled:
** Although we haven't really seen him in action yet, he passed the combat-heavy entrance exam with nothing but a Quirk that just gives him a tail, with the rest being martial arts he learned. This is something of notice in an exam that favors students with powerful, flashy Quirks capable of destruction.
** He managed to hold out against a group of foes by himself using hit-and-run tactics when the League of Villains attacked USJ.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: He once got chastised for using his tail in a way most people would expect, thus ending up a predictable fighter.

->"''You only heard bits and pieces about us, but go on acting like a know-it-all... quit dissing my mates, damn it!"''

A feisty but goofy and slightly dim-witted young boy who often tries to show off and look cool in front of the girls. His Quirk, "Electrification", allows him to discharge electricity from his body. While this is extremely powerful, there is a limit to how much electricity he can release at once; going over this limit short circuits his own brain, temporarily turning him into a giggling idiot.
----
* AllMenArePerverts: While Kaminari is not as bad as Mineta, he has no problem in joining the latter's antics.
* AsleepInClass: In [[https://img.biggo.com.tw/sUTYD3PuMIOT8eXJqy8__S-ZVjRH41axnM1C3Itr2hTs/https://my-live-02.slatic.net/original/46d658a50a809b51b070a664515f0916.jpg this]] set of keychains featuring Class 1-A students at their desks, Kaminari is asleep and snoring while everyone else is taking notes.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: Has [[ElementalHairColors spiky blonde hair]] with a completely natural lightning-shaped streak, and he just so happens to have electric powers.
* BadassAdorable: A goofy and very kind guy who will shock you to oblivion if you harm his friends.
* BeginWithAFinisher: One of his biggest early shortcomings is his tendency to default to his full power attack, "Indiscriminate Shock: 1.3 Million Volts," as soon as possible, which results in his brain short-circuiting. In his Sports Festival "fight" against Shiozaki, her ability to NoSell his electricity means their match lasts about 15 seconds as a result. This frequently backfires even when successful, as he immediately becomes TheLoad; which, in cases like the USJ attack, leaves him very open to follow-up attacks. A large part of his CharacterDevelopment involves him becoming a more patient and tactical fighter.
* BookDumb: Does horribly in tests and ended up with the lowest midterm score of Class 1-A, although it has been shown that he can manage his way through villain attacks just fine.
* ButtMonkey: Doesn't have it quite as bad as Mineta, but the dumb state he's left in when he short circuits and some of his screw-ups, [[CurbStompBattle like his match against Shiozaki]], have been the subject of a good few jokes at his expense.
* CantActPervertedTowardALoveInterest: He has a crush on Jiro, but doesn't include her in his ImagineSpot of a maid cafe for 1-A.
* CaptainObvious: Kaminari will often point out the obvious, which is one of the main reasons why he often passes off as the class' resident idiot.
* CatchPhrase: Whenever he discharges too much electricity, his brain short circuits for an hour and the only thing he can say is "Yaaaaay!" or "Wheyyyyyy!"
* CharacterTics: Whenever he's around Ojiro, he tends to pet and fiddle with his tail, to which Ojiro pays no mind.
* ChekhovsGunman: He serves as this in the FinalBattle of the ''Heroes Rising'' movie. [[spoiler:Deku and Bakugo had been severely injured by Nine's devastating lightning attack in a previous fight. With all the action and chaos of the final battle it's easy to overlook the fact that Kaminari hasn't made an appearance despite everyone else pushing themselves to their absolute limits to defeat the villains. It eventually transpires that this is because Kaminari was hiding in wait the entire time for Nine to unleash another lightning attack so he could absorb it, which allows Deku and Bakugo keep fighting]].
* ChivalrousPervert: While he has no problem with ogling the girls or joining in Mineta's cheerleading joke, he won't go as far as Mineta. He acts very differently with Jiro, as he doesn't include her in his maid fantasy.
* CivvieSpandex: His hero costume is not very different from Jiro's, favoring a trendy look over any sort of practicality. He gets a few gadgets later, but he still looks relatively casual. According to supplementary materials, they were made by the same designer, so this may have been intentional on the designer's part.
* CoolShades: His second hero costume includes a blue-tinted pair. According to supplementary materials, they update him with info on the location of his flying projectiles.
* CowardlyLion: Spends the first stage of the provisional hero license exam thoroughly freaked out by [[BodyHorror Seiji Shishikura's Quirk]], but after Shishikura insults his classmates one too many times, Kaminari [[LetsGetDangerous finally goes on the offense]]. [[spoiler:Then during the raid on the Villains' HQ, he's panicking at being on the front lines at first, but after some encouraging words from Tokoyami and Midnight, he goes on to cancel out a wide-range electricity attack]].
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: His golden eyes match his blond hair.
* DeadpanSnarker: Not as much as Jiro, but he can be this at times. His primary target is usually Bakugou.
* DeathOrGloryAttack: "Indiscriminate Shock: 1.3 Million Volts", where he unleashes all the electricity in his body at once. It's strong enough to fry an entire crowd of opponents, but if there's anyone left standing... well, taking out a brain-fried Kaminari just got easier for them.
* TheDitz: While not that stupid, he definitely counts while in his "moron state", when he literally short circuits his brain and temporarily becomes a babbling idiot.
* DumbBlond: Blond hair, and a lovable idiot.
* ElementalAbsorption:
** During [[spoiler:the raid on the Paranormal Liberation Front]], it's revealed that alongside producing electricity and being heavily resistant to it, he's also capable of absorbing it, which he demonstrates by completely negating an incredibly powerful electric attack from a villain.
** It shows up again in the 2nd Movie. [[spoiler:Which has Denki acting as a lightning rod to save Deku and Bakugo from Nine's weather manipulation Quirk]].
* ElementalHairColors: His hair is blonde and spiky, fitting for a guy with electric powers.
* ElementalPersonalities: He's bright, cheerful and energetic, matching his electricity theme.
* EveryoneHasStandards: {{Implied|Trope}}. Kaminari is a bit of a Casanova and never misses the chance to hit on a beautiful lady, and was even excited to see the girls of Class 1-A in swimsuits, but he never goes as far as Mineta does, such as attempting to grope the girls or peep on them in the hot springs.
* ExactlyWhatIAimedAt: His upgraded hero costume now includes flying disks that he can send his electrical blasts toward through air instead of touch, but he must position them behind what he wants to hit, hence seeming to miss with his disk launcher.
* {{Expy}} : Friend of the protagonist? Check. Comic relief? Check. Seen as kinda dumb? Check. Relatively strong but lost almost all his fights? Check. Good looking boy, a bit perverted and a Casanova? Check. Friend with someone smaller and more perverted than him? Check. Crush on a Tsundere? Check. [[Manga/{{DragonBall}} Yamcha]] is that you?
* GeniusDitz: He may be an academic putz, but he has shown on multiple occasions that he can come up with insightful combat tactics for the field, like using his discs when he defeated Shishikura.
* GratuitousEnglish: During the room presentation contest, he wears a shirt with "Thunder Bolt" on it in English text.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: A good-natured hero-in-training with [[{{Pun}} electric]] blond hair.
* HandsomeLech: A classic example. Kaminari is quite handsome and stylish, but his goofy personality seems to interfere with any serious chances he has of picking up any of the girls he hits on.
* TheHeart: Shares this role with Kirishima - according to Horikoshi, Kaminari ties the class together.
* HeroicRROD: He has a wattage limit to how much he can discharge. If he goes over that, he'll short circuits his own brain, leaving him in a dumb state for an hour.
* HiddenDepths:
** When Jiro suggests the hero name "Jamming-Whey" for Kaminari (as an insult, since when in his "moron state", he just makes the sound "wheyy"), he immediately thinks she's making a connecting to Creator/ErnestHemingway, an American novelist. Quite the connection for a generally BookDumb Japanese student.
** While in the remedial class during the Forest Training Camp Arc, he's seen drawing Aizawa on a piece of paper. It's fairly well done, indicating he has some drawing skills.
** While he doesn't have much book smarts, he's proven to be a pretty good, if not great, field strategist. When he, Tsuyu, Kirishima, Koda, and Shinso are facing off against Class 1-B, he's the one that comes up with the match-winning plan.
* HormoneAddledTeenager: Downplayed. He has clearly displayed an interest in all things sexual and will sometimes join Mineta in his lewd attempts at ogling the girls in their changing rooms or in their bikinis but, unlike Mineta who ''craves'' the nasty, Denki knows where to draw the line.
* IdenticalStranger: Not quite identical, but he has a similar hairstyle and color to the man in the Shie Hassaikai who is taking care of Eri.
* KindheartedSimpleton: Kaminari may have fluff for brains, but he's got a big heart.
* LetsGetDangerous: During the provisional hero license exam, Kaminari finally gets show off how much he's improved using his Quirk.
* LivingBattery: His powers are often used for [[MundaneUtility charging the phones of other students]], topping up emergency batteries in ''Heroes Rising'', or hotwiring a car during rescue training. In Chapter 346, he alongside other UA students use their electricity to power [[spoiler:the engines keeping UA High afloat.]]
* TheLoad: If he uses too much electricity and fries his brain, he becomes useless for an hour.
* LogicalWeakness: He's strong against most conductible metals and surfaces, but he struggles if his opponent is shielded by something that insulates against electricity (like Shiozaki's plant hair).
* MadeOfIron: [[spoiler:Kaminari gets pummeled with debris roughly his own size from Mister Compress and falls from the back of Gigantomachia, but remains conscious at least]].
* MeaningfulName: "Denki" means "electricity", while "Kaminari" means "thunder".
* MiseryTrigger: A very easy way to throw off Kaminari's groove is to make fun of his intelligence (or rather, lack thereof), or making fun of his StupidityInducingAttack.
* MundaneUtility: Thanks to his Quirk, he can charge electric devices, such as phones.
* NiceGuy: A cheerful, upbeat, friendly and welcoming individual who deeply cares for his friends and allies and will try his best to help and protect them.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: He loves to play with the fluffy end of Ojiro's tail. Also does this to Jiro on one occasion, moving just a ''bit'' too close to her face in excitement while praising her musical skills.
* OnlyFriend: Kaminari is the only student who actually seems to be Mineta's friend, with others merely tolerating him to various degrees. The two of them often engage in perverted antics such as tricking the girls into wearing cheerleader uniforms. Notably in ''My Hero: One's Justice 2'', Kaminari is the only one to benefit from having Mineta as a sidekick, which in general is based on canon relationships.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: He has to be resistant to his own electricity so he won't kill himself while using his Quirk, but overusing it will fry his brain for an hour. It also immensely helps [[spoiler:if he has to act like a lightning rod just like what he did against Nine's thunder]].
* RunningGag: Whenever he uses his power at maximum, Kaminari will turn into a giggling idiot who stares vacantly into thin air and can only gesture a double-thumbs-up while chuckling through a goofy slack-jawed grin.
* ShipTease: With Jiro. Kaminari makes her flustered when he praises her for music skills. Later when Midnight tells him to think of the most important person to him during the Liberation War to gather courage, Jiro is the person who comes up and encourages him.
* ShockAndAwe: At first, he's not quite good at controlling it and just "wears" lighting and can discharge it in short bursts. Meaning at best he just acts as a taser and this means having to actually get up close to his targets. If he goes all out, he risks hitting allies as well as enemies. As of Chapter 107, however, he's received equipment from Hatsume and Power Loader that lets him [[TookALevelInBadass extend the range and precision of his Quirk, allowing him to target enemies from a distance]].
* ShooOutTheClowns: Not him, exactly, but his dumb mode. In the early arcs of the series, it would appear quite frequently to provide levity, but it's no coincidence that he finally gets some proper aiming gear and stops overloading himself right before the Overhaul arc plunges the story into its most serious tone yet. Tellingly, he's completely serious when he takes to the field in the Liberation War arc and gets knocked out legitimately instead of dumbing down again.
* SlasherSmile: He's actually capable of giving very scary ones whenever he feels he may get the upper hand in a fight, especially whenever he's about to discharge his electric attack.
* StupidityInducingAttack: It's his HeroicRROD caused by breaking his own wattage limit. If he ends up like this in a battle, it's an InstantWinCondition for the opponent.
* TookALevelInBadass: While his Quirk was recognized as very strong from the get go, its limited control and problematic drawbacks made his usefulness very limited, not helped by the fact that he was not very bright either. By the time of the Provisional Hero License Exam Arc, he is way more careful about his voltage limit and has gotten equipment specifically to help with long-range attacks. During the training matches against Class 1-B, he also shows a more tactical approach to the situation, showing his strategic growth as well.
* ThoseTwoGuys: Seen often with Mineta.
* UnskilledButStrong: His Quirk is strong enough to electrocute a whole army, as shown in the USJ incident. Unfortunately, he temporarily becomes a vegetable once he uses his Quirk at his fullest, and needed a tool to help him control it.
* VitriolicBestBuds:
** His relationship with Jiro is something akin to this. They hang out with each other frequently, but their interactions consist mostly of bickering.
** His relationship with Bakugo starts to develop into something like this. Kaminari gets to joke and fool around Bakugo in a manner that would result in an explosion to the face for almost anyone else besides Kirishima. He even begins to call him "Kacchan" like Midoriya does.

An eager and friendly young man obsessed with the concept of manliness and the hero Crimson Riot, whom he has modeled himself after to the point of taking a similar name. He is one of the few students who is on friendly terms with Bakugo. His Quirk, "Hardening", allows him to harden his body and get harder with every hit he takes; he has some self-esteem issues due to thinking it's not flashy enough for a hero.
----
* AlliterativeName: His hero name, '''R'''ed '''R'''iot.
* AmbiguouslyGay: Kirishima doesn't appear to be attracted to any girls in his class, but has a significant number of moments with Bakugo that could be construed as ShipTease, including some questionable moments in ''Manga/MyHeroAcademiaSmash'' such as accepting a challenge to see whose heart will submit first, wearing a Little Red Riding Hood/Big Bad Wolf couples' costume with him. There is also kanji in one of his bios referencing a Japanese "tough-guy" homosexual subculture and also that he likes “tough guys” while Mineta’s says he likes women.
* AnimalMotifs: Crocodiles. Kirishima's teeth are razor-pointed like Setsuna's and Tetsutetsu's, appearing similar to a crocodile's teeth. Kirishima's Hardening, which grants him powerful dermal armor for offense and defense can be reminiscent of crocodiles as they too have very strong scales.
* AnimeHair: Styled to be so, since his natural hair is down and he sometimes wears it that way when off duty or chilling indoors. When spiked, his hair is made to even make it look like he has two little horns.
* AscendedExtra: Slowly grows in importance and gets more screen time in the later arcs until he joins the main characters for the Internship Arc.
* AttackAttackAttack: He uses that strategy occasionally, most visibly - and unsuccessfully - during the fight with Cementoss.
* BadassesWearBandanas: He sometimes wears a white strip of cloth around his forehead like a bandana.
* BashBrothers: With Bakugo during both the cavalry battle in the U.A. Sports Festival Arc and the Joint Training Arc. Has also this dynamic with class 1-B Tetsutetsu with whom he shares a similar Quirk along with the same values, fighting style and birthday, which used to annoy Eijiro.
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:His high school appearance persona is a conscious attempt to shed [[IHatePastMe the person he used to be]]]].
* TheBerserker: His main strategy is really just to attack anything in his way. Kirishima's main reason for this is because of his durable Quirk. This is justified when he turns "Unbreakable" as he can fight to his heart contents. However, he only can do it for a short amount of time.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: While he is one of the nicest characters in the series, he is powerful and does well during combat. In addition, [[GoodIsNotSoft he's certainly not a pushover and is not above getting angry at people who go too far]].
* BigDamnHeroes: He saves [[spoiler:Mina's]] life [[spoiler:by shoving her out of harms way right before she's crushed by Gigantomachia's hand]].
* BoisterousBruiser: Kirishima is very HotBlooded and has a manly spirit that would make his idol proud.
* BookDumb: His grades aren't great and he spends most of his time working out instead of studying. That said, he's not exactly dumb in the field.
* BoringButPractical: How he feels about his own Quirk. He acknowledges that it's useful, but also finds it generic and not flashy enough. He doesn't take it well when he meets another student whose Quirk is nearly identical to his own, with the exception that he can get harder with every hit. [[spoiler:His special move reflects this. While others use flashy techniques or complex tricks, Kirishima's special move is to push his Quirk ''to its absolute limit'' to gain ''even more SuperToughness than he already has'']].
* BroughtToYouByTheLetterS: His first costume had a belt with the letter "R" on it.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: Eijiro is one of the most fight-happy members of Class 1-A and has the skills to back it up, being a particularly powerful and efficient melee fighter. Also a genuine NiceGuy.
* CharacterDevelopment:
** After the Internship Arc, like everyone else involved in the raid on Chisaki's hideout, [[spoiler:Kirishima is much more mellow and aware of both his and his comrades' mortality. He and Tsuyu are the only two students to be completely depressed up over every mistake in the Class 1-A vs. Class 1-B mock battle because if it was a real battle, Kirishima would've died. It's well contrasted after by the usual joke situation of him acting just like Tetsutetsu being completely discarded. Kirishima was actually trying to be careful, serious, and stick to Tsuyu's battle plan in the simulation, but Tetsutetsu is a LeeroyJenkins already treating the training as if it were real and not getting caught up in self-pity]].
** On a more positive note, [[spoiler:his backstory reveals that he once saw Gigantomachia threatening his classmates, and was frozen in fear and unable to bring himself to intervene. He saw himself as a coward, especially next to Mina after she was able to trick the giant into going away. Cut to the Meta Liberation Army arc, and not only is he the one to ultimately pull off the plan to put Gigantomachia out of the fight, but he saves Mina's life by diving in and throwing her out of harms way right before being crushed under Gigantomachia's giant hand]].
* CloseRangeCombatant: Given the nature of his Quirk, he's strictly a melee fighter. He's also a decent brawler thanks to his continuous training.
* ColorCharacter: '''Red''' Riot, which in turn is inspired by '''Crimson''' Riot, a retro hero that Kirishima admires.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Subverted. At first, it seems like he has natural red hair and red eyes. It's later revealed his hair is dyed red and is naturally black.
* DarkIsNotEvil: His Quirk being activated makes him look terrifying [[spoiler:and he looks like a demon when using Unbreakable]], but he's one of the most genuinely heroic characters in the show.
* {{Determinator}}: [[spoiler:Kirishima charges right through Dabi's inferno to push Ashido out of Gigantomachia's hand; from there, he scales up the massive villain's arm to toss a vial of anesthetic into his mouth. Toga shattering it with her knife just prompts him to try again with one Ashido had dropped earlier, which succeeds]].
* EarlyBirdCameo: [[Creator/KoheiHorikoshi Horikoshi]] indicates that he can be seen in Chapter 3, but you won't recognize him if you're looking for spiky red hair; it's dark and matted at the time. Chapter 142 reveals through a flashback that he used to have black hair, and in Chapter 145, another shows he changed it for his high school debut into U.A.
* ElementalMotifs: Earth. Kirishima's Quirk allows him to transform his skin into jagged rock-like armor, granting him powerful defensive and offensive capabilities. In terms of personality, Kirishima is often a peacemaker in the group and one of Bakugo's most supportive friends at the start.
* ExposedToTheElements: Not to the extent of [[InvisibleStreaker Hagakure]], but his hero costumes tend to leave him [[WalkingShirtlessScene shirtless]] and he doesn’t cover his torso up even in the winter, when most of the other students do cover up.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: A very clear-cut example of this, revealed through flashbacks and a subtle first appearance. Kirishima's hair is naturally black and matted down. Right after he took the exams at U.A., he changed his hairstyle to its current look, a loud and flashy red series of spikes, resembling that of Crimson Riot. [[spoiler:The whole point behind it was to stand out more. Kirishima was also going for a high school debut and wanting to ditch everything about his old pathetic self]].
* EyeScream: Accidentally cut his right eyeball as a child due to not being able to control his Quirk when it began to develop. "Red Riot: Unbreakable" hardens both of his eyes, making them look fractured. They're still fine when the effect wears off, though.
* FatalFlaw: [[IdiotHero His lack of tactical thinking.]] Kirishima's Hardening can make him a force to be reckoned with, so much so that he's one of Class 1-A's best hand-to-hand fighters. Unfortunately, his brains isn't as good as his brawn. It's shown many times that his overall fighting strategy is to attack his enemy head-on. As shown in his fights against Bakugo and Cementoss, Kirishima doesn't think tactically in a fight. If someone knew his weakness (his limit on how long he can use his Hardening) and could outsmart him, they could trick Kirishima into tiring himself out.
* FieryRedhead: Invoked. He dyes his hair red upon entering U.A. and is one of the most HotBlooded students of the class.
* FirstFriend: While Bakugo had many admirers and hangers-on during elementary and middle school, Kirishima is the first classmate at U.A. to look past his prickly exterior and admire his pride and strength, as well as the first person who Bakugo truly respects in kind. This actually becomes a plot point during the Hideout Raid Arc, as [[spoiler:Kirishima is the only person Bakugo trusts enough to accept help from when rescuing him from the League of Villains]].
* ForWantOfANail: [[spoiler:In a fit of rage following him failing to protect some students from Gigantomachia before Mina Ashido tricked the latter to go away, he knocks over a gift he forgot about which contained a promotional recording of an interview of his hero Crimson Riot revealing that much like Kirishima, he also still has fear and regrets about his past. If he didn't find this, it's likely that Kirishima would've turned down the chance of going to U.A]].
* FriendlyRivalry:
** With Bakugo, Kirishima tends to be one of the few students to take his bad attitude in stride at first, and acknowledges the drive he has. In turn, Kirishima is one of the few students Bakugo's initially willing to show some degree of respect to.
** With Tetsutetsu, while the two won't hesitate to compete with each other in training, and acknowledge how similar they are to each other, outside of that they act more like brothers.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: When using "Red Riot: Unbreakable", his scarred eye glows bright red.
* TheHeart: Shares this role with Kaminari. Kirishima always ends up in this role no matter what team he's on. He can even get [[ItsAllAboutMe Bakugo]] to be somewhat cooperative, which is a ''massive'' achievement. Horikoshi says that he was created to help bring everyone in Class 1-A together.
* HeroicBuild: Like most of the other guys in class, Kirishima is ''ripped'' for his age, which is blatantly showcased in his hero costume, which leaves him completely shirtless. This is a RequiredSecondaryPower, since his Quirk is useless offensively unless he can muscle his way into close range.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Blames himself for not doing anything to prevent Bakugo from getting captured, and, overall, thinks he's behind his classmates in terms of ability and experience. At one point, even goes as far as saying he's "just a mess of weaknesses." His self-depreciation surprises people when he expresses it. Chapter 144 reveals that he has been having these doubts ever since middle school and had actually given up on U.A. at one point. He's obviously too hard on himself considering he placed second on the practical exam for entering U.A., second only to Bakugo.
* HeroWorshipper:
** Crimson Riot is to him what All Might is to Midoriya; a role model to strive towards. His own hero name is derived from Crimson Riot's as well.
** He also deeply admires Mina as someone he wants to be like.
* HiddenDepths: On the surface, especially at the beginning of the manga, he comes across as confident. However, throughout the series, he makes comments that are critical of himself, showing he is very humble. It is confirmed during the Internship Arc that he has low self-esteem. [[spoiler:He even hated his own Quirk for a long time after he nearly stabbed his own eye out with it as a child]].
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: He once tried to talk down a criminal who injected himself with Quirk enhancing serum and tried to relate their experiences of wanting to get stronger and feeling inadequate. He then found out the hard way that the man couldn't care less about his background. ''[[ISurrenderSuckers Twice]]''.
* HotBlooded: Inspired by the famous Crimson Riot, Kirishima has developed a fiery attitude in order to leave behind his former gloomy, weak self. Demonstrated as he has some extreme moments where he shows off his boisterous personality.
* IdiotHero: His grades are poor and most of his battle tactics come down to "harden and punch your way through every problem that you run into". Despite this, he's among the most warm-hearted members of the cast and proves to be integral to the operation against the Eight Bullets.
* ImmuneToBullets: Downplayed, as [[spoiler:a thug shoots him with a prototype Quirk-erasing bullet while Kirishima is off-guard, but it harmlessly shatters against his hardened skin due to its more fragile construction.]]
* InconsistentSpelling: His first name can be spelled "Eijiro", "Eijirou", or "Eijirō".
* InSeriesNickname:
** Depending on the translation, Bakugo calls him "Dumb/Weird/Shitty Hair".
** In middle school, his friends shortened his name to "Ei".
* InstantArmor: His Quirk is being able to harden his body. [[spoiler:His special move makes it so even his ''eyeballs'' are tough enough to shatter blades]].
* IWantToBeARealMan: A major part of his characterization is his pursuit of manliness. He idolizes the strong and chivalrous Crimson Riot, describes his likes and dislikes as "manly" and "unmanly", and has masculine interests (such as working out). This is partially driven by his own insecurity. It should be noted that Kirishima's definition of manly is more focused on the responsibility of a man to be chivalrous and protect others.
* JackOfAllStats: As a nod to his BoringButPractical powers, the databook gives him a set of pretty balanced stats.
* {{Kiai}}: When using his power with RapidFireFisticuffs, he shouts "Ora ora ora ora!!!", ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure''-style.
* LeeroyJenkins: He along with Bakugo are the first to attack the villain blocking his class's path during the Rescue Trial. Doesn't work, but points for trying.
* {{Mangst}}: Despite his upfront enthusiasm and cheerful disposition, Kirishima shows from time to time that he's actually deeply insecure and very humble. Internally, he often worries that his Quirk isn't enough to actually get things done, not to mention his grade school episode [[spoiler:where Mina Ashido proved being braver than him confronting [[EarlyBirdCameo Gigantomachia]] despite being clearly outclassed in comparison]].
* MeaningfulName: "Kirishima" has the character for the verb "cut". Likewise, "Eijiro" has the character for "sharp". Both of these are references to how sharp his body becomes when transformed.
* {{Metalhead}}: Though never explicitly confirmed, chapter 172 implies he's a fan of HeavyMetal music, as when he volunteers to be the vocalist for the band playing for the Culture Festival, he does what appears to be a MetalScream, with Jiro even remarking "wrong genre?".
* MenDontCry: Defied: despite, or perhaps because of, his desire to be manly, Kirishima makes a point to be very open about his emotions and encourages others to be the same.
* MightyGlacier: He's strong and tough enough to take repeated explosions from Bakugo and his arm wrestling match with Tetsutetsu ended up smashing the concrete pillar they were competing on. But unlike Bakugo and Midoriya, his Quirk doesn't improve his mobility at all. As a result, he's often lagging behind in a fight and has to chase villains on foot at normal speed.
* MoralityPet: For Bakugo, who shows hints of a (very, ''very'' deeply hidden) kinder side around Kirishima.
* MrFanservice: He walks around shirtless in his hero costume, and boy, is he ripped.
* MusclesAreMeaningful: Kirishima works out a lot, as the amount of exercise equipment in his room shows. His superhero outfit shows off his built muscles. This gives him some of the highest non-Quirk augmented physical abilities in the class. It's mentioned by Aizawa that he needs it to make his StoneWall Quirk stronger as well as usable as an offensive tool.
* MyGreatestFailure: Seems to view his inability to prevent Bakugo's kidnapping as this.
* MythicalMotifs: The fantasy-themed third anime ending depicts Kirishima as a big red dragon serving as Bakugo's steed.
* NiceGuy: One of the most genuinely kind characters in the series. He's the only one who tries to befriend Bakugo and he attempts to break the tension when Todoroki declares Midoriya a rival. He's the first student to try to check All Might's condition after his fight with Nomu and immediately goes to comfort Tsuyu when she's feeling guilty, and even tries to comfort and give advice to a villain who just shot Kirishima's senpai and Kirishima himself. The result of the entrance examination also shows him with the fourth-highest Rescue Points of the results, just behind Midoriya, Uraraka, and Class 1-B's Kendo.
* NightmareFace: In Chapter 134 [[spoiler:when he turns his Quirk up a notch. The facial crenelations that usually come with activation of his Quirk intensify and ''extend onto his eyeballs'', his irises become polygonal, his hands are transformed into talons, and his mouth becomes a distended, lipless maw]].
* NoSell: During his fight with Bakugo at the U.A. Sports Festival, he shrugs off his opponent's first attack. However, as the fight goes on Kirishima's Quirk becomes less and less effective, so Bakugo's blasts ultimately do the trick.
* NoSenseOfDirection: In ''Anime/MyHeroAcademiaTwoHeroes'' at least, he gets lost while trying to find the reception area of the building where he and several other classmates are supposed to attend a party. As in, "leads himself and Bakugo to the 80th floor instead" lost.
* NotSoSimilar: While it was originally a joke that one was a xerox copy of the other, as a result of DivergentCharacterEvolution, Kirishima and Tetsutetsu have become more and more different as the school year progresses. Whereas Kirishima is now more cautious and defensive in combat, Tetsutetsu is more a LeeroyJenkins. Kirishima's training focused on increasing the defensive capabilities of his Quirk by making his body harder, while Tetsutetsu's training has focused on making his Quirk more resistant so he can charge without worry. Kirishima's insecurities have become more prevalent as time goes on, while Tetsutetsu is more focused on hero work than self-doubt.
* ObliviousToLove: In ''Manga/MyHeroAcademiaSmash'', Jiro starts noticing his muscular physique and good looks and starts developing a crush on him. Kirishima, however, barely notices any hints of attraction, gets distracted by Bakugo and tries to hang out with him instead. The narration reveals that Kirishima had no idea why Jiro refused to talk to him for the next couple of days. In the canonical series, he seems uninterested in love and romance as he looks rather exasperated when Kaminari starts flirting with Mei Hatsume.
* OddFriendship: He's the only person Bakugo considered a real friend in the beginning. It saves the day during the rescue operation since Kirishima is the only person that [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness Bakugo is willing to let save him]].
* OnlyFriend: To Bakugo, at least at first. While Kirishima has a good relationship with everyone else in his class, particularly with Kaminari, Mina and Sero, Bakugo only sees Kirishima as his friend, [[CharacterDevelopment though this is starting to change]]. This actually became the key to success in Bakugo's rescue planned by Midoriya, as he wouldn't especially listen to Iida or Midoriya, but would most likely respond to Kirishima reaching his hand out.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: [[spoiler:He thinks of himself as a pretty plain and boring individual, right down to his Quirk, while others stand out naturally. In particular, he was jealous of Ashido prior to joining U.A., having seen her prowess as a social butterfly and the talk of the town]].
* PersonalityPowers: The only classmate who's able to simply shrug off Bakugo's attitude and even act friendly toward him. In other words, he's very "thick-skinned".
* RapidFireFisticuffs: On occasion, he uses his Quirk while performing a very strong punch rush.
* RealMenEatMeat: According to official materials, he likes meat and manly things.
* RedIsHeroic: His hero costume is predominantly red, matching his dyed hair. Bonus points for choosing the hero name Red Riot. It's also an inversion of RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver, because he has black pants and sleeves, but is as heroic as they come.
* RedOniBlueOni: Zigzagged between the two as he can be Blue to Bakugo and Kaminari's Red, as while both are hot-headed, Kirishima is at least the more [[GeniusBruiser cautious, combat wise, focusing on being on the defensive]]. While Bakugo is more focused on [[TheBerserker destroying his opponent on sight]]. He could also be Red as he is more [[TheHeart extroverted and more boisterous]] outside of hero work. Whereas Bakugo can be seen surprisingly as TheAloner. With Kaminari, Kirishima is usually the one with the more common sense of the two and Kaminari is a tad more excitable and impulsive.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Skin hardening gives him a great defense and hardened fists means his punches will hurt, but he has to ''get'' there first. As a result, he works out the most in his class, besides maybe Bakugo, to get a HeroicBuild so he can muscle his way into close range, otherwise he has to depend on help from someone else to boost his mobility.
* ScarsAreForever: Nicked himself in the eye when his Quirk first manifested at the age of three. He still has a small line right above his eyelid. Although, it can be easily mistaken as an eyelash, which is noted in his character profile during one chapter.
* ScaryTeeth: He is depicted with jagged, unusually sharp teeth in contrast to the majority of the cast.
* ShonenHair: It somehow manages to outspike Bakugo's. The hair is not natural though since it takes three minutes to style. His hair sometimes gets spikier and sharper when he uses his Quirk, especially when he uses [[spoiler:his special move, "Unbreakable"]].
* SleevesAreForWimps: Inverted, funnily enough. Kirishima is a staunch advocate of masculine confidence and chivalry, but the only thing his Hero costume has on top is a pair of sleeves.
* StealthPun: A skin-hardening InstantArmor hero that's easy-going enough with everyone to befriend even [[HairTriggerTemper Bakugo]]? One could say that Kirishima's ''thick-skinned''.
* StockShonenHero: Interestingly enough, he plays this straighter than actual protagonist Midoriya despite being a supporting character at best. He has [[ShonenHair much spikier red hair]], HotBlooded personality, and [[BookDumb not enough intelligence]]. He also [[NiceGuy makes friends with everyone]], including [[OddFriendship Bakugo]]. [[spoiler:It's later revealed that this is not his natural behavior and he's consciously projecting the image of an enthusiastic bruiser in hopes of burying his insecurities]].
* StoneWall: [[spoiler:Basically what his move "Unbreakable" turns him into. His entire body becomes so hard it shatters ''blades'' on impact]]. It's downplayed in when he does hit someone while his body is hard its going to be ''really'' painful.
* SuperMode: [[spoiler:"Unbreakable". It gives him NighInvulnerability and covers him with sharp spikes, but he can't keep it up for very long]].
* SuperStrength: It's not given a lot of emphasis, but one of his RequiredSecondaryPowers seems to be superhuman strength. This is mostly shown in him having the might to punch through obstacles (like concrete walls or skyscraper-sized robots).
* SuperToughness: Literally his main ability is to harden his body at any given point and time as he can survive tons of steel falling into him thanks to this Quirk.
* TestosteronePoisoning: Obsessed with "manly" things. That's because Crimson Riot, his idol, defines manliness as living without regrets, which Kirishima is determined to do.
* ThoseTwoGuys: Is often paired with Kaminari.
* UnskilledButStrong: Kirishima has incredible durability which also gives him a lot of power in his punches and can destroy a wall of cement with just one punch. But he rarely relies on skill and finesse due to his durable [[SuperToughness skin Quirk]] that allows him to run through steel and many other objects and to destroy giant walls.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: His hero costume has him topless except for a couple of cog-shaped pauldrons over his shoulders. Considering his Quirk, it's not as though he needs protection, and if he wore a top, that top may rip since his Quirk can cause spikes to come out of his skin.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Without any more subtle way to restrain villains or avoid their attacks, he has to hope that hardening and punching his way to victory is enough. [[spoiler:His special move is simply to harden himself even more than normal, hardening even his own eyeballs in the process, and making it so hard that it would shatter blades attempting to cut him]].
* WorthyOpponent: [[spoiler:During the Internship Arc, he gets recognized as a man by deathmatch craving thug Rappa for his valor and determination. Unfortunately, Kirishima's only barely conscious and still thinks he hasn't done enough]].
* {{Youkai}}: His appearance draws similarities to ''oni,'' ogres in Japanese mythology with horns, fangs, rough skin, and red coloring.

->''"That's right. I got into U.A., my dream school... At U.A., it's always about moving forward! That's what we tell ourselves... Plus Ultra!!"''

A shy and self-effacing student with an odd, golem-like appearance and a love for nature. His Quirk, "Anivoice", allows him to speak with and control animals. He rarely speaks outside of his Quirk, and usually communicates through hand gestures.
----
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''oji '''K'''oda.
* AntiquatedLinguistics: When he finally speaks, he does it through this:
-->'''Koda:''' Please, go forth, oh band of creatures small, the time to vanquish the source of that cacophony is now, if that's all right...\
'''Jiro:''' You talk up a storm!!
* TheBeastmaster: His Quirk allows him to command animals with his voice. While he can traditionally command them for combat, he can also communicate with them for reconnaissance, such as having birds scope out an area to make sure there aren't any straggling civilians left behind during an evacuation. [[spoiler:After his horns grow in, his range vastly increases and his control becomes telepathic rather than just vocal.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's one of the sweetest kids in Class 1-A, but he can still send a legion of animals after you if he wants to. [[spoiler:The Hooded Advisor makes him genuinely ''furious'' by belittling Shoji. This results in him using his newly upgraded Quirk to summon a ''gigantic'' flock of birds and insects to throw the Advisor ''off a building'' with Hitchcock Birds.]]
* BunniesForCuteness: He has a pet rabbit named Yuwai-chan, which the girls of Class 1-A find adorable.
* CoolMask: Has one as of the costume upgrades prior to the Provisional Hero License Exam which covers his mouth and doubles as a megaphone for his Quirk.
* CostumeEvolution: Koda starts wearing a face mask with what appears to be a built-in speaker system to amplify the cadence of his voice while using his Quirk.
* CreepyGood: He may be one of the sweetest students in Class 1-A, but that doesn't change the fact he can command an [[TheSwarm army of bugs]] to swarm someone. [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes Just ask Present Mic]]. {{Downplayed|Trope}}, however, as he's [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes just as terrified by bugs as Mic]], only commanding them when there's no other choice.
* ADayInTheLimelight: He gets some focus during Final Exams Arc and Final War Arc.
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: Koda has changed the most of any character since his introduction. He used to have much rougher features, which have been continuously made rounder and thus cuter.
* ElectiveMute: He's such a ShrinkingViolet that he rarely ever speaks when he isn't using his Quirk, instead preferring to communicate through sign language. He starts growing out of it as the story progresses, though he's still not talkative much.
* EmotionalPowers: [[spoiler:After his power-amplifying horns grow in, it's revealed in a flashback to her mother that Koda's own horns like her own will grow if he gets significantly angry, which she hopes is for the right reason such as trying to protect the ones he cares about. Said reason arrives during the final battle where Hooded Advisor is constantly belittling Shoji, which causes Koda to snap and awaken his true potential.]]
* FireForgedFriends: His friendship with Jiro sets off from their teamwork against Present Mic in the Final Exams Arc.
* FlatCharacter: Aside from him becoming less shy over time, he is easily one of, if not the least developed character of the series. It gets a bit subverted with Final War arc.
* GentleGiant: He is one of the bigger students in the class. He's quite possibly the gentlest one too.
* GoodParents: As revealed in Final Exams arc, he has a loving and caring mother and it's implied his father is also a kind individual. [[spoiler: In the flashback of Chapter 372, Koji's father defends his wife from bigoted people.]]
* HandSignals: His main way of communication due to his utter shyness. He has started talking more to others, but he is still mostly quiet.
* {{Irony}}: He is the only person in Class 1-A with a Quirk that is voice related. He is also easily the quietest member of the class, almost never talking outside of using said Quirk. [[spoiler:His inherited horns from his mother enable him to use {{Telepathy}} to control animals without needing to speak at all]].
* LogicalWeakness: He has no use in a place where there are no animals to manipulate, or where his voice cannot reach them. His Quirk also seems to have no effect on humans with animal-based ones. [[spoiler:However, when he gets angry enough during the FinalBattle, his body sprouts an odd horn formation from his head as he attacks the Hooded Advisor with it subsequently revealed that said horns enable him to use {{Telepathy}} over a massive range to summon and control animals without needing to speak, enabling him to defeat the HoodedAdvisor with birds summoned from all over the city at once]].
* NatureLover: According to supplementary info. Not surprising considering his Quirk. Might also be a NatureHero, although he doesn't live in isolation. We see him quite often interacting with various animals too.
* NiceGuy: He doesn't speak much but Koda's actions alone are enough to tell you he's a good guy. [[spoiler:This makes him hitting the RageBreakingPoint after hearing the Hooded Advisor belittle Shoji's experiences with FantasticRacism more pronounced, as he [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness uncharacteristically]] attacks the advisor himself close-rage whilst shedding BerserkerTears]].
* OddFriendship: While he is a very shy ShrinkingViolet, Jiro is an outspoken DeadpanSnarker. Additionally, he can talk with animals, while she can attack using sound.
* OutOfFocus: Koda is one of the least focused-on members of Class 1-A.
* PersonalityPowers: Played with. It's true that he is good with animals and loves nature, but he is not very communicative otherwise.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow. PlayedWith. His [[RockMonster natural appearance]] doesn't have any hair on his head, but during the FinalBattle, [[spoiler:hearing the Hooded Advisor urging on the heteromorph supporters of Spinner to assault the hospital whilst belittling Shoiji's own experiences with FantasticRacism [[RageBreakingPoint enrages him]] to the point he attacks the advisor with a massive swarm of birds, an odd horn formation bursting from his head as he does so. It's revealed that this horn enables him to use {{Telepathy}} to summon and control animals from over a greater range than before without needing to speak, allowing him to attack the Hooded Advisor with a tsunami of birds summoned from all over the city]].
* PutOnABus: Baring a cameo in the credits, he, Aoyama, and Ojiro are the only members of Class 1-A who don't appear in ''Anime/MyHeroAcademiaTwoHeroes''.
* TheQuietOne: He speaks very rarely, usually preferring visual communication.
* RepetitiveName: '''Ko'''ji '''Ko'''da.
* RemovedAchillesHeel: [[spoiler:His Quirk's main weakness is it's limited by his ability to speak and how far away his voice carries. His rage over seeing Shoji belittled and insulted causes his horns to finally grow in, granting him telepathic animal communication over a much larger range, removing this weakness and giving him a huge power up.]]
* RockMonster: While his body appears to be made of rock, he doesn't really look that monstrous.
* SecretKeeper: Was originally the first and only student that Tokoyami told about how Dark Shadow works depending on the area's light level, due to tending not to talk much.
* ShoutOut: One of his Ultimate Moves is called '[[Film/TheBirds Hitchcock Birds]]', which as to be expected, involves sending a ''lot'' of birds. [[spoiler:After growing his horns, his range and ability to use telepathy ''massively'' upgrades it to be more akin to the movie.]]
* ShrinkingViolet: Very clearly a shy person, which explains why he's TheQuietOne. He is apparently so shy that statwise, he shares the lowest teamwork rating with both Bakugo and Aoyama.
* ShutUpHannibal: [[spoiler:Enraged by the Hooded Advisor belittling Shoji, he attacks him mid-sentence with a literal wall of birds.]]
* SincerityMode: Jiro is shy at displaying her musical skill in public, so much so that even Koda is willing to speak up and tell her that she really rocks.
* SpeaksFluentAnimal: He can talk to animals. It's only implied he can understand them as well.
* SuperpowerfulGenetics: He inherited his Quirk from his mother.
* {{Telepathy}}: [[spoiler:Once his horns grow in, his Quirk awakens and can now work via telepathy rather than his voice over a far larger area.]]
* TranquilFury: [[spoiler:When his horns grow in, enabling the use of telepathy for his Quirk without needing to speak, the first thing he does is silently order his [[ZergRush impromptu army]] to shove the Hooded Advisor off the building he was standing on.]]
* VocalDissonance: He is easily one of the biggest members of Class 1-A and is rather ripped when seen without a shirt on. Vocally, however, he sounds like a small child.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: He's afraid of insects, despite being able to control them. [[spoiler:After his Quirk Awakening, he's able to control several insects along his usual choice of birds without any issue.]]
* ZergRush: He can literally swarm foes with nearby animals. [[spoiler:Even moreso after his horns grow in.]]

!!!'''Quirk:''' [[PowerUpFood Sugar Rush]]

->''"I was baking a chiffon cake! I thought you would all want a midnight snack, so..."''

A tall and strong-built student who can bake some mean desserts. His Quirk, "Sugar Rush", greatly increases his physical strength and muscle mass through an intake of sugar. However, his brain activity slows down the more sugar he consumes, making him doped up and sleepy if he overdoses.
----
* TheBigGuy: Sato towers over most of his fellow pupils, except for Shoji, and he is built like a weightlifter, even by the standards of the rest of class 1-A where all the boys, bar Mineta, have a HeroicBuild. Doubly so when his Quirk is in action.
* ChickMagnet: PlayedForLaughs. His NiceGuy persona and baking skills wins over all the girls during the dorm room contest, which scores him the victory. He even mentions that a lot of girls like to go to him for his desserts. Resident pervs Kaminari and Mineta are quick to attack him for this.
* CloseRangeCombatant: His Quirk makes him a very efficient brawler and wrestler but he's rather disadvantaged against long-range attacks.
* CovertPervert: When Mineta reveals the peephole in the boys' locker room, Sato is one of the male students who shows an interest in the discovery.
* DumbMuscle: Invoked. While his Quirk allows him to become stronger, it gradually makes him dumber as well.
* FoodAsBribe: He denies it when Kaminari and Mineta accuse him of doing this in order to win the dorm room contest.
* GagLips: His lips resemble nothing so much as a frosted donut.
* HeroicBuild: He's very tall and muscular.
* HeroicRROD: The reduced brain activity that comes with his Quirk.
* HighPressureEmotion: He's not used to being the center of attention. So when the class 1-A girls notice that he's actually a SupremeChef, complimenting his skills to the point of electing him the winner of the dorm room contest, he's so surprised and flattered that he almost explodes from embarrassment, red face, fuming ears and all.
* HourOfPower: The boost of strength he gets from ingesting sugar only lasts three minutes.
* HulkingOut: Becomes much bigger and [[MusclesAreMeaningful more muscular]] the more sugar he ingests, increasing his strength dramatically.
* LogicalWeakness: Implied. Because his Quirk requires consumption of sugar, it can be safe to assume that he's screwed if he doesn't have any. He also loses intelligence when he's doped up with sugar because enough of it will leave his mind all doped up, too. If faced with a test of endurance or a MightyGlacier and/or StoneWall kind of opponent like Cementoss, both of these weaknesses compound and seriously reduce his chances of victory.
* MeaningfulName: His name can literally be translated to "Sugar Strength".
* NeverGetsFat: He eats a lot of sugar and still keeps his muscular figure. Justified because of his Quirk; eating a lot of sugar just increases his strength and physique!
* NiceGuy: A pretty affable dude who's happy to bake for his friends.
* OutOfFocus: Sure, a good amount of 1-A has this issue, but bar none this guy has it the absolute worst. He's shared one extremely brief fight with the much more prominent Kirishima, where both lost extremely soundly to Cementoss. He doesn't really have much to do in most of the more mundane scenes on top of getting extremely few fight scenes, and all in all the only time he's ever really had any character development at all is revealing his SupremeChef status. That day in the limelight versus Cementoss up there? Literally all he's had yet, and that was all the way back in the Final Exam Arc, in Chapter 67.
* PowerAtAPrice: While Sugar Rush does give him a good amount of strength, the cost while it is active is decreased intelligence and cognitive abilities.
* PowerUpFood: The ingestion of any sweet food increases his strength.
* RapidFireFisticuffs: When in SuperMode, he can produce a barrage of powerful punches.
* RealMenCook: Turns out he is also a great baker. This is actually justified since this skill is a perfect complement for his Quirk.
* RealMenHateSugar: Inverted. Sugar actually makes him ''manlier''. His TrademarkFavoriteFood also happens to be cake.
* RealMenWearPink:
** Wears a pink tuxedo during the popularity poll announcement.
** "Sugarman" is not the manliest of names.
* ShoutOut: He has a strength-related Quirk and his character design is a mix between ''Manga/{{Kinnikuman}}'' and Takeo Goda from ''Manga/MyLoveStory''.
* SuperStrength: The main advantage of his Quirk.
* SupremeChef: Chapter 99 reveals that, in training his Quirk, he has become ''excellent'' at baking cake, which in turn makes him instantly popular with the girls in his class, much to the dismay of Mineta and Kaminari.
* ThroughHisStomach: Gender inverted. He wins the dorm room contest because the girls ''really'' loved the cake he made. Mineta and Kaminari, understandably, are shocked that he could become so popular with the girls just like that and so quickly.
* VocalDissonance: He's one of the biggest guys in class, but in the anime, especially in Japanese, his voice is a rich and raspy tenor instead of the expected BaritoneOfStrength
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: Power grabs are part of his fighting style, as shown in the Joint Training Arc.
