->''"I’ve the blood of angels in me, and I just got done beating a man so hard in my fury he is the sole possessor of a swollen ankle and a heavy limp."''

Known as the Scholar of Ersis and the Archivist, Faust (born Franz Irinith Faust) is the illegitimate youngest son of Tabbris Irinith. He is a scholar of Arkn and Dekn culture, and the current apprentices of Jacques Redgrave.
----

* TheAce: He's the heir to Tabbris Irinith; bright, clever, cultured, well-educated, a swordsman, a Blood Flags champion, and the first Irinith to summon Gav'reel's Thorne in many generations. Currently, he's apprenticed to [[LivingLegend Jacques Redgrave]] in [[EldritchLocation the realm of the Hethe]]. All that, ''and'' he has the most insanely good luck of any half-blood alive. (In fact, the only times he ''does'' fail are when he's being manipulated by outside forces.)
-->'''Mae'eve Vallindri:''' To sum it up, Faust, you’ve got nerve. Lots of nerve...[s]here, unfiltered Erisian nerve combined with a fine Arkn upbringing and a knowledge of Arkn culture that rivals even that of a seasoned scholar. You know the Arkn tradition thoroughly, you respect it, but you’re not afraid to dispose of it if need be.
* TheAlcoholic: He becomes addicted to alcohol during the Avantas'tol Coup, and continues drinking drinking heavily in the aftermath.
* AncestralWeapon: Faust was, for quite some time, the owner of Gav’reel Irinith’s mystical staff (known as Gavreel's Thorn/Lucare'obarach/The Staff of Light). He was the first Irinith in many generations to be able to summon it, being the Irinith closest in character to its creator. It allows him to consult with Gav'reel's spirit (on occasion). [[spoiler: He looses it after (accidentally) killing Sevar’khai during the Avantas'tol coup.]]
* TheApprentice: He's apprenticed to Redgrave, who is teaching him about the cosmology of the universe, the Old World, and TheMultiverse.
* BadassBoast: Look no further than the first entry on his blog:
-->"I’ve the blood of angels in me, and I just got done beating a man so hard in my fury he is the sole possessor of a swollen ankle and a heavy limp."
** When [[spoiler: Andras]] threatens Faust repeatedly on his blog, claiming that he [[GoMadFromTheRevelation can't handle]] what lurks in the vaults of the library, Faust responds thusly:
--->"Try. Me. Whatever you think you can do, “A,” I’m all game. There’s so much I’d do for that information. For any information. [[BringIt Let’s see what you can do, what you want from me.]]"
* BookWorm: He's the kind of person that the term “bookworm” was ''invented'' for. He's devoted his life to reading and studying every bit of Arkn and Dekn culture he can get his hands on, and he would (by his own admission) “commit atrocities" to get into the vaults of the Alunerium[[note]](the Dekn equivalent of the Library of Alexandria)[[/note]].
** BadassBookworm: While he's renowned as a scholar of Arkn and Dekn literature and culture, Faust is also a competent swordsman and a [[BloodSport Blood Flags]] champion, with a red hot temper and a lot to prove -- definitely someone whom you don’t want to challenge to a fight.
* ColdBloodedTorture: While he is held captive by Andras, he is subjected to both physical torture and ''Morit'sengr Invokare'' (an extreme form of [[MindRape mental torture]]).
* CulturedWarrior: As an Arkn nobleman, he had an aristocratic upbringing, and he's a scholar of Arkn and Dekn culture; he's also a competent swordsman, the wielder of Gav'reel's Thorne [[spoiler: until recently]], and a Blood Flags champion.
* DeadPersonConversation: Months into the Avantas'tol coup, when he's at his breaking point, Gav'reel appears to him in a vision and encourages him not to lose hope, telling him that he is the true and rightful heir of the throne of Avantas'tol.
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: After the Avantas'tol coup, Faust [[https://at.tumblr.com/archives-of-the-scholar/what-is-my-purpose/aj98c91b0zc9 struggles greatly with this]].
* DrowningMySorrows: He turns to drinking to cope with the horrors of the Avantas'tol coup (and eventually becomes a full-blown alcoholic).
* FamilyHonor: Despite being shunned and disregarded for his half-breed status, Faust is genuinely proud of his heritage, and wanted very badly to live up to his family name and the legacy of Gavreel Irinith. He later abandons this desire after his image of Gavreel is [[BrokenPedestal shattered]], and decides to forge his own path instead.
* FantasticRacism: Downplayed; while Tabbris has never treated him as lesser for being half-human, Sevar'khai despises him as a "filthy half-breed", and he's prohibited from holding office (even though he's far better suited to rule Avantas'tol).
* Myth/{{Faust}}: He's loosely based on the literary archetype. Becomes evident in Act III of ''Staff of the Scholar'', in which he -- a scholar with a thirst for otherworldly knowledge -- [[DealWithTheDevil agrees to be apprenticed to Jacques Redgrave]].
* FieryRedhead: He has the trademark Irinith red hair -- and the irascible personality that goes with it.
* FuzzTherapy: After his torture under Andras (among other things), Faust gets a black and white therapy cat (or "ca'at"), whom he names Poppy'Pippo.
* HalfHumanHybrid: He’s half human from his mother's side, half Arkn from his father's side.
* IronicHell: Part of the mental torture he endures under Andras is the illusion of being imprisoned, and tortured, in the Infernous: the {{Hell}}-like Dekn afterlife prison of the Old World (which Faust was ''obsessed'' with learning about).
* LeeroyJenkins: According to Andras, Faust is "an idiot"; foolhardy, and "[w]illing to rush into battle at the drop of a hat". This leads to tragedy when he [[spoiler: accidentally kills his own half-brother after charging blade-first into a darkened hallway during the Avantas'tol coup]].
* MagicStaff: His ancestral weapon, the Thorn. Faust is the first Irinith in many generations to be able to summon it. [[spoiler: He loses access to it after accidentally killing Sevar'khai.]]
* MeaningfulName: His name comes from the historical Faust, as well as the literary archetype of Faust. His first name, "Franz", ironically has roots in Germany (where the story of Faust originated from).
** MeaningfulRename: After the Avantas'tol coup (and its accompanying tragedies) Faust discards his family name and adopts the name Faustus Agonistes Redgrave, signifying both that he accepts both his role in the prophecy of the Agonistis, and his position as Redgrave's apprentice.
* NaiveNewcomer: As a young half-Arkn who was raised primarily in the Lathrym, Faust initially knew very little about life on Earth. (However, For'ende helped him to adjust).
* PayEvilUntoEvil: Andras tortures Franz both mentally and physically, for weeks on end; Faust repays him by gouging mutilating Andras's good hand and gouging eye with his own scalpel (and taking the eye with him as a souvenir).
* PlotArmor: Faust has ''insanely'' good luck, and always seems to come out on top (or at least, relatively unscathed), even in circumstances that should have led to death, dismemberment, or total loss of sanity.
-->'''Petrel Raverne''': I miss Franz Irinith-Faust. That fucker has the Hethe's own luck. If he were here, he'd find this out within two days tops…I'm not made to be like he is. He's still training with Redgrave in that weirdly distant realm. Told us it was the Realm of the Hethe. I don't know if I believe that, but this guy carved out a Dekn Master's eye and hand with a scalpel. If anybody could've gone to that Hethe Realm and lived, it was him. Goddamn protagonist luck.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: To the acolytes of the Society of the Purple Rose, after they express their disappointment at Faust for refusing to accept his sainthood:
-->"I will not take the aid of a rapist, abuser, and murderer. Damn you. Damn your visions. Damn your bloodstained hands. Damn what you did to Shanna Averil, and Penperin Ilsenthe, and all of those others in your horrifically manipulative cult."
* SelfFulfillingProphecy: Faust [[https://at.tumblr.com/archives-of-the-scholar/deliberations-and-appeals/xuso6vyfx0t8 intercepts a letter]] about the prophecy of the Agonistis: a being who will kill Sevar’khai Irinith and free Avantas'tol from his rule, but regret it forever. After a great deal of deliberation, Faust [[https://at.tumblr.com/archives-of-the-scholar/what-is-the-point-of-sticking-to-ones-principles/jt74n8cvmneu returns to Avantas'tol]] and aids the coup trying to overthrow his half-brother. After many months, the coup ends with [[spoiler: Sevar'khai being accidentally stabbed to death -- by Faust]]. Wracked with guilt, Faust gives up on trying to be a legendary Irinith, discards his family name, and becomes the apprentice of Redgrave[[spoiler:...taking the name Faustus Agonistis]].
* SiblingMurder: [[spoiler: While fighting alongside the Ismora'sai Guard during the Avantas'tol coup, Faust accidentally stabs his brother, Sevar’khai, to death while fighting in a darkened hallway. It results in Faust losing Gavreel's Thorn.]]
* StopWorshippingMe: He is furious when the Society of the Purple Rose declares him a saint.
* TakeThat: About Marchosias:
-->"[B]ehold, your god is not a god if i could poke him with a stick and make him scream through his gag as i played the most irritating songs ever manufactured upon this earth. i have seen him cry from frustration and i have poked him enough for him to bleed. [[https://at.tumblr.com/archives-of-the-scholar/deliberations-and-appeals/8ntuciupuykf [A]nd those are the fucking facts.]]"
* TechnicalPacifist: While Faust has the Irinith temper, and has come very close to murdering someone in the past, the laws of Blood Flags prevent him from killing indiscriminately in Ersis. Additionally, Gavreel's Thorn prevents its wielder from killing someone, unless it is in self-defense (or in defense of another), and Faust's own admiration for Gav'reel himself inspires him to try to adhere to his ancestor's code of ethics. However, it's also shown that while Faust may not be able to murder, he has no qualms with seriously injuring or maiming people (as proven when he [[spoiler: maims Andras]]). His moral code is eventually discarded during the Avantas'tol coup, while he attempts to aid the Ismora'sai Guard in overthrowing his half-brother. This ultimately leads to tragedy, when he [[spoiler: accidentally kills Sevar’khai (causing him to lose the Thorn)]]. Shortly thereafter, he also discovers that Gav'reel's pacifism was ineffective and caused a great deal of harm (which may have inspired Faust to discard his pacifism ''permanently'').
* TransTribulations: Subverted; while Faust is a trans man, it's almost incidental to his character, as he hardly ever talks about it (let alone expresses any angst about it).
* TraumaCongaLine: After receiving a letter regarding the prophecy of the Agonistes (made by Marchosias), Faust returns to Avantas'tol, only to be captured by his half-brother and forced to fight the soldiers of his own kingdom's army, gladiator-style. Faust escapes and is ready to flee, but a vision of Gav'reel Irinith encourages him to remain and fight alongside the resistance. The ensuing warfare (which stretches on for ''months'') leaves Faust so traumatized that he turns to [[DrowningMySorrows drinking]]. The coup finally ends when [[spoiler: Faust accidentally kills Sevar'khai in front of his own daughter]] -- fulfilling the prophecy, and causing Faust to lose Gav'reel's Thorn (possibly for good). Then, in the aftermath, Faust's abusive grandfather informs him that Gav'reel Irinith -- his personal hero and role model -- was an incompetent ruler who [[BrokenPedestal caused a lot of undue death and suffering with his pacifistic morals]]. Faust is left so broken and dejected that he leaves Avantas'tol, rejects his family name, and begins training under Redgrave -- in [[EldritchLocation the realm of the Hethe]].
* VisionsOfAnotherSelf: Subverted; while training under Redgrave, Faust is told about worlds [[AlternateUniverse Beyond The Veil]] -- complete with alternate versions of himself. However, he has yet to actually ''see'' any of them.
-->"My knowledge has only expanded of these worlds beyond ours, as a result. I know names of figures who share my face..."

[[folder:For'ende Elext]]
!!For'ende Anathema-Elext
->'''Appears in:''' ''Archives of the Scholar''

->''"Anyway, hi, I’m For’ende Elext and- o h shit Faust is bleeding I need to go bandaid him up."''

The half-Arkn grandson of Dem'deure Elext, For'ende is Faust's best friend in Ersis. He is an accomplished gadgeteer and shitposter. [[spoiler: Becomes Faust's [[SwornBrothers Inkaal'sen]] at the end of Act I of Staff of the Scholar.]]
----

* AFriendInNeed: For'ende proves that he will never leave Faust behind to suffer, no matter what. He ends up as [[TheCaretaker Faust's caretaker]] while Faust is undergoing [[MindRape Morit'sengr Invokare]], making sure that Faust eats and gets the care he needs.
* AmateurSleuth: He and Petrel are currently investigating Andras Asphyxiar's Fear Project -- and the Silence Station. This has disastrous consequences for For'ende.
* BromanticFoil: He seems to act as this to Faust. While Faust is more serious and up-front about his knowledge, For'ende appears to be more laid-back and willing to joke around.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: At first, he shows up as a completely static character meant for comic relief, typing in all lower-case and acting slightly like a {{Expy}} of [[WebComic/{{Homestuck}} Dave Strider]]. Later on, he begins to open up and show other sides of himself, including a sensitive side.
* ChildhoodFriend: To Franz Faust. He states that he acted as Faust's "voice" for a long time after Faust came to Ersis (implying that he acted as Faust's translator) and helped him adjust to life in the sub-realm.
* EyeScream: While trying to cut off Pascal D’Aramitz's New Year's sermon, he [[spoiler: is captured and has his eye gouged out with a knife. He tries to replace it on the spot with Andras's preserved eye, using his own healing powers to facilitate the transplant -- only to quickly realize that [[ArtifactOfDoom he's]] [[PsychicLink made]] [[{{Synchronization}} a]] [[MindRape terrible]] [[DemonicPossession mistake]].]]
* GadgeteerGenius: The SEEKER one-shot reveals that while For'ende has a proclivity for joking around, he's actually a very accomplished at creating things. In fact, he was responsible for creating an A.I. called EXONA that was utilized by SEEKER.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Petrel Raverne. The latter is insanely jealous of For'ende's relationship with Franz.
* LightningLash: His signature weapon is an electrified whip, which he calls "Voltage Cleave".
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: He says something akin to this when Faust is undergoing Morit'sengr Invokare. Despite all his puns at Faust's expense, [[AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther he does legitimately care about his friend]].
* RedOniBlueOni: He's the blue to Faust's red.
* RelationshipUpgrade: [[spoiler: He and Faust go from childhood friends, to bromantic foils, to Inkaal'sen.]]
* {{Sidekick}}: He starts off as this to Faust. Over time, however, he becomes ''far'' more.
* {{Troll}}: He hacked into the blog of the Society of the Purple Rose and posed as a timid initiate named "Mod Chrysanthemum" -- then proceeded to post memes ridiculing the group (and Marchosias in particular).

The half-Dekn son of Lucifuge Rofocale and Sandy Harper, who was raised in isolation by his father. He is a member of District 5.
----

* AbnormalAllergy: He is allergic to Silulic energy; extremely unusual for his human half, and even ''more'' unusual for his Dekn half.
* BadBlackBarf: One side effect of his allergy.
* DelicateAndSickly: He was told all his life that he and would die if he ever left the house. [[spoiler: This is later discovered to be a lie concocted by his father. (While he does have an allergy to Silulic energy, it isn't fatal.)]]
* DistressedDude: He's repeatedly imprisoned in his grandfather's home for months (or even years) on end, during which he's confined to his room, isolated (by having his internet cut off), deprived of the basic essentials, and regularly beaten and tortured by his father's henchmen. On one occasion, Valefar even posts a picture of a bruised, battered Bobbie in Zachriel's Council chat as proof of what he's suffered.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Despite being male, Bobbie is frequently mistaken for a girl.
* FriendlessBackground: Due to being imprisoned in his father's home and isolated from the world his entire life. He makes up for it after joining the Runners.
* HalfHumanHybrid: He's half-human (on his mother's side), half-Dekn (on his father's side).
* HeroicBluescreenOfDeath: At the climax of Shadow on the Sea, he escapes from his father and flees back to District 7…only to find that Lucifuge had the settlement raised to the ground. At that point, he falls to his knees and weeps, barely putting up a fight when his father's lackeys re-capture him and drag him back to Lucifuge's house (and certain torture).
** Happens ''again'' in the finale of ''Inside District 5'', after [[spoiler: Astor Clemmens shoots Andrew Ringo (who subsequently dies in his arms)]].
* IronicAllergy: Being exposed to Silulic energy causes him to develop strange, geometric lines all over his body, and vomit black fluid; not the best allergy for a half-Dekn (a race that was ''created'' by Silulic energy).
* MissingMom: His mother died when he was only two years old.
* OutOfTheFryingPan: After being imprisoned by his father the second time, Bobbie manages to hijack the Discord account of a member of Zachriel's Council and alert the group to his situation. Lucifuge intercepts his messages, and not only punishes Bobbie with more beatings, but puts out a hit out on the entire Council. Nathali is forced to invite Mistress Vepar into the Council to provide them security, and, while Zachriel is able to talk Lucifuge into giving Bobbie internet access and allowing him to chat, he remains imprisoned (and suffers ''more'' severe beatings).

The half-Dekn leader of District 5. He is the boyfriend (and current fiancé) of Petrel Reverne.
----

* AChildShallLeadThem: Downplayed; he was named the leader of District 5 at age 16.
* AmateurSleuth: He teams up with Petrel Raverne to try to uncover who killed his father.
* DisappearedDad: Unlike many of the other half-Dekn in canon, Astor's father was initially involved in his life when he was young, teaching him about his Dekn physiology and how to master his powers when he was five or six years old. However, the man was tragically murdered when Astor was still rather young, making him absent for most of Astor's life.
* DrowningMySorrows: After he kills [[spoiler:Andrew Ringo]], he turns to drinking.
* HalfHumanHybrid: His mother was a human, his father a Dekn.
* YouKilledMyFather: His father was murdered by [[spoiler:Zachriel Rofocale]]. When he discovers who was responsible, he's understandably furious (even after Zachriel explains ''why'' he did it).

* HomelessHero: After running away from home at 17, he lived on the streets for several years, before being accepted into the Runners.
* MissingMom: His mother divorced his father when he was twelve years old. He missed her terribly, and still wonders why she left. [[spoiler: They are later reuninted thanks to Zachriel's Council chat.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: When he uses his limited Dekn powers, his eyes glow red.
* SignatureHeadgear: Like his mother, he is never seen without a knit beanie. (Though his is green, rather than a brown color.)

!Risen

[[folder:In General]]
Humans who, for various reasons, have been marked by the Hethe to be [[{{Reincarnation}} reincarnated]] through multiple lifetimes. They typically incarnate as both an Arkn and a Dekn, before being born as a human with the powers of both.
----
* TheChosenMany: Risen are humans who have been specially chosen by the Hethe to be reborn through multiple lives, allowing them to not only acquire several lifetimes worth of skills and abilities, but powers that are normally inaccessible to humans (including Arkn Ethric magic and Dekn mental powers).
* CreepyChild: Many full-blood Risen children (i.e. those on their final lifetime) are this. They often seem wise beyond their years, and have strange supernatural abilities which they tap into inadvertently -- often to disastrous effect.
* GooGooGodlike: All final-stage, pure-blood Risen are born "slightly glowing" as a sign of their innate supernatural power.
* ImHavingSoulPains: Some final stage Risen experience "metaphysical seizures" -- debilitating mental, physical, and spiritual pain -- while acquiring the memories of their past lives.
* PastLifeMemories: Risen retain the memories, skills, and abilities of all of their previous lives. Usually, these traits lie dormant (save for the occasional [[DreamingOfTimesGoneBy dream]] flashback, or burst of information). In their final, "full-blood" life, however, they acquire ''all'' information from ''all'' of their past lives. Fortunately, the process occurs gradually and typically concludes in early adulthood; ''un''fortunately, it's often accompanied by severe physical and metaphysical symptoms, ranging from headaches to [[ImHavingSoulPains "metaphysical seizures"]] and even [[SplitPersonalityTakeover possession-like episodes]].
* SplitPersonalityTakeover: When a final-stage Risen regains the memories of their past lives, it isn't unusual for then to become overwhelmed and temporarily regress into one of their former personalities. Some Risen even need to be restrained during these episodes to prevent them from acting on their memories.

->''"I remember my path now... Put bluntly, I’m a bard. I have a violin. I can play. That playing is filled with magic. And I can make things happen with that."''

Ryael, better known as the Bard of the Black Violin, is a final-stage Risen. In their previous life, they were an Arkn MusicalAssassin and the most powerful Bard who ever lived. Now, they are seeking to rediscover their powers and atone for their past crimes.
----

* AmbiguousGender: While biologically male, Ryael identifies as non-binary and prefers to use them/they pronouns. They become extremely uncomfortable when addressed by their birth name (Ryan).
* CoolSword: In their Arkn life, Ryael possessed “Reignbreaker”, the legendary sword that killed Gavreel Irinith. It was said to have been capable of changing form based on the preference of the wielder, and to drive men to murder for the longing of it. [[spoiler: It was previously Ellpagg’s cane sword, Dragon’ier.]]
* DisappearedDad: Ryael is currently looking for their human dad, who vanished while searching for Daniel Morrow (the guardian of the Morrow family).
* ElectiveMute: Apparently, sensory overload plays a part. They usually communicate via sign language (a skill they recalled from their Eelekti life).
* ICallItVera: Ryael's violin is named "Ashling Telma" (a.k.a. the Black Violin).
* IHaveManyNames: They've been called Ryael'Ayre Sorin, Ryael'Ayre Sorin Callokure, the Bard of the Black Violin, the Ruach'mor, the Dancer Delgaliel, and the Eld'strixa Monachiel -- and that's just their ''Arkn'' names and titles. Their human names have included Ryan and Ryael Morrow.
* KindHeartedCatLover: They’re very fond of their pet cat, Mirrin (and post pictures of him on their blog).
* MusicalAssassin: In Ryael's Arkn life (in the words of Faust), "basically they were a hero and badass who went around doing hero things and committed murder by violin."
* MusicMagic: Ryael's violin uses Ethric energy, and is capable of hypnotizing and manipulating humans (among other things).
* PastLifeMemories: As a Risen, Ryael suffers from these. They worry about being out in public with friends, out of fear that they'll get caught up in a memory and hurt someone. Apparently, their former selves were ''not'' good people.
** Later on, we learn that Ryael's fear is justified when Ryael explains that [[spoiler: they nearly killed one of their friends during a remembering "episode"]]. There's also the fact that while remembering their past, they have pulsing headaches and behave very uncharacteristically.
