| The story is set during the [[RoaringTwenties Taisho era]] and centers around a 12-year-old girl with a familiar hairstyle, named [[{{Expy}} Ain]]. She lives in the cellar of the Ryōunkaku, Japan's first skyscraper, and builds devices [[SchizoTech far ahead of the current time period]], including computers with cathode ray tube display monitors and typewriter keyboards. Her inventions are funded by a mysterious man called Takeshita, who claims he can see the future in Ain's computer screens. Other people who take an interest in Ain and her inventions are Enoshi, a military officer sent to investigate some unexplained electrical currents, and an aristocrat named Kimiyasu Fuenokōji. Living with the latter is Barbara Andrei, a Russian aristocratic refugee from [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harbin_Russians Harbin]]. |

| !!''Despera'' contains examples of: |
| * DieselPunk: The technology Ain builds is futuristic, but with a 1920s aesthetic. |
| * TheFaceless: Takeshita's face isn't shown in any illustration. |
| * MsFanservice /SensualSlavs: [[https://celestialkitsune.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/despera-anime-yoshitoshi-abe_00011.jpg?w=450 Barbara Andrei]]. Ain is scared of her, however, because Europeans were a rare sight in Japan at the time and she has never seen one before. |
| * ShockAndAwe: Ain seemingly displays an uncanny ability to generate electricity from her hands. |
