** Ginko, so very much. Even with her backstory and the fact that she does regret [[spoiler:Sumika's death]], she's otherwise unhealthily obsessed with Kureha, creepy and stalkerish, an [[DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnFemale attempted rapist]], an unapologetic murderer with much blood on her hands, and she [[spoiler:let Sumika die]] for incredibly selfish reasons, mainly her jealousy. None of this is made any better by the fact that she gets little repercussion for her actions and then outright forgiven in later episodes.

** The bears in general. As the story goes on, the show attempts to paint them as the victims of homophobia and persecution from humans; problem is, from what few glimpses of the bears world that we see, they're just as bad or worse than the humans (creating ChildSoldiers, for example). Not helping matters is that all the bears seen (with the exceptions of Lulu, Milne, and arguably Ginko) are shown to be uncaring assholes at best and complete sociopaths at worst, never mind that Lulu and Ginko, so very much.the "good" characters, are still serial killers themselves.

Has been made into a disambiguation.

* EvilIsSexy: Mitsuko is a guilty pleasure character for many fans. Though she is manipulative, stalkerish, and a rapist, she's also incredibly sexy and seductive, on top of already being an entertaining villain.

YMMV can't be played with. They either are the trope, or they aren't. To Justify a Trope is to play with a trope.

* AssPull: [[spoiler: Sumika being Lady Kumaria]]. Never foreshadowed, comes out of nowhere, never explained and serves as a mechanism so Ginko and Kureha can get together.
** Or maybe not. It's never explicitly stated that [[spoiler: Sumika is Lady Kumaria]] and it's more than likely that she simply took on that form as a symbolic representation of what Kureha learned from Sumika.

* QuirkyWork: The anime is a commentary on Japanese views on lesbianism vs YuriGenre fiction, told through the presence of shapeshifting, human-eating lesbian bears.

* FanPreferredCouple: Despite Kureha/Ginko being the official couple, many fans are drawn to Kureha/Sumika and Ginko/Lulu, due to the latter two couples having far more healthy interactions and overall chemistry than Kureha/Ginko. This became especially apparent after the reveal that [[spoiler: Ginko let Sumika die]] because she was a rival for Kureha's love.
* GrowingTheBeard: The anime starts getting a lot better around episodes 3 to 5, with episode 3's reveal of what the Invisible Storm really is and thus the confusing puzzle pieces of symbolism starting to fall into place, episode 4's focus on characterization (and especially that of fan favourite Lulu), and episode 5's further focus on characterization, plot, and backstory.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: Ginko. While her behavior in the earlier episodes was mostly tolerated, many grew to dislike her as it was made clear how possessive she was of Kureha. Though [[TearJerker her backstory]] did redeem her in some people's eyes, many more lost faith in her after it was revealed that [[spoiler: she let Sumika die]] for incredibly selfish reasons. This is not helped by the way the show more or less forgives her for her actions in later episodes and she gets little punishment for them.

Added DiffLines:

* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForLittleGirls: The series has a cute and brightly-colored art style, and some of the characters are really bears disguised as human girls, with their bear forms looking more like cute teddy bears than real bears. However, the anime is largely about lesbians dealing with a homophobic society, and it contains some violence and quite a bit of nudity and sexual themes; the opening alone revels in sensual imagery.

Main main characters don't count as Ensemble Darkhorses.

* EnsembleDarkhorse
** Lulu. Despite being one of the main characters, she gets put heavily OutOfFocus as the story goes on; even so, she's easily the most popular character in the series, and even many of the show's critics admit to liking her. This comes from how Lulu is one of the most sympathetic characters in the show, as well as being generally fun to watch, and the show's PluckyComicRelief. Luckily for these fans, she gets a much more prominent role and presence in the manga.
** Mitsuko. Despite her bad traits, she's an effective and compelling villain, and hammy and dramatic to the point where she's completely unforgettable. Many people wish she had a larger role than what she got.

** Mitsuko's [[spoiler:death]], and the subsequent [[spoiler:writing out of an effective, compelling villain]]. This is because of the contrived nature of [[spoiler:her death]] (see her character page for details) and that, ultimately, [[spoiler:Mitsuko becomes a mere extension of Ginko's character and part of a weak mind-control/inner emotional conflict that is eventually just brushed aside]].

** Lulu ultimately not being [[spoiler:part of a threeway relationship with Ginko and Kureha]] like advertised in merchandise and OP and as utilized in the manga, instead [[spoiler:being killed off to basically get her out of the way]].

Yurika died in the end (so I don't see why reuniting with the one she killed in the afterlife is that much of a problem), and the Life Judgment Guys did nothing illegal.

* TheScrappy
** Yurika, due to being incredibly unsympathetic as a character, despite the anime's attempts to cast her in a sympathetic light. What broke many people was [[spoiler: her getting spiritually forgiven and happily reunited with Reia in the afterlife, despite murdering Reia and attempting to ''rape Reia's daughter'', the latter of which only happened a few minutes beforehand]]. The fact that she's such a blatant {{Expy}} of a character from [[Anime/MawaruPenguindrum Ikuhara's previous work]], and is practically riddled with UnfortunateImplications (see [[http://whiningaboutyuri.tumblr.com/post/121105509195/that-sounds-like-fun-even-though-i-wonder here]] for details), does not help.
** The Life Judgement Guys. All they do is take up screentime with unfunny banter, and are frequently accused of contributing to the show's BrokenAesop. Life Sexy in particular gets the most dislike, mostly thanks to the scene where he voyeurs over two girls privately having sex (which has been interpreted both as consensual and non-consensual, which may or may not make Life Sexy's voyeurism even worse). To make it worse, they are among the very few characters who get out of the anime completely unscathed, despite many fans wanting them to get an upcomance of some sort.

* BrokenBase
** Opinions on the anime are divided between those who think it's an artistic wonder that provides an interesting view on lesbianism in Japan, those who view it as an incomprehensible mess that merely panders to yuri fans, and those who think it merely encourages the more unfortunate or toxic aspects of the genre it's supposedly criticizing.
** Whether or not the fanservice and sexualisation of the characters, the large amount of sex scenes and the way they are handled is mere pandering or intended to be satire of the rampant problems in the yuri genre. With the latter, you also have the argument of whether or not it works.

** Many of Lulu's fans were pissed at how she more or less gets put OutOfFocus and [[spoiler: got killed off as essentially a way to get Ginko and Kureha together]]. The fact that the OP, first few episodes, and promotional material hinted at a threesome ending that ultimately never happened doesn't help.

The anime came first. This trope is about adaptations eclipsing the original version, not the adaptation itself being more obscure than the original

* AdaptationDisplacement: The anime is more well-known than the manga, by far; the manga is relatively obscure in the comparison, not helped by the fact that it has little to no English translations.

About fans or critics praising it such audiences don't think it measures up. Not just disappointment.

* HypeBacklash
** Ikuhara hyped the anime by saying it would be the yuri equivalent of ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam''. The results, while not bad per se, were regarded by many as a bit of a mess.
** The anime is often advertised as a thoughtful and well-done criticism of the yuri genre, leading to many people being turned off by the show's problematic aspects, the fanservice, and the mess of symbolism found in the first few episodes.

Better Than Canon applies to Fanworks only.

* BetterThanCanon: Quite a few people have taken a shine to the LighterAndSofter manga version. It probably helps that the manga has a completely different plot and far less of the more controversial elements of the anime.

* UnintentionallySympathetic: Despite the show's attempts to paint them as unapologetically evil, many have pointed out that the Invisible Storm's acts were to see which girls were bears, who were murdering their friends and classmates. This had lead some to point out further that their actions on Kureha were technically justified (if extreme at times), since Kureha was letting Ginko and Lulu live at her place.
