** In ''Antares'', Mai Lan develops a sexual attraction to Kim's boyfriend Marc out of nowhere, and ends up making a pass at him behind Kim's back. Not only is this completely random, but Mai Lan chooses to strike at a wildly inappropriate time (out in the open, with other people nearby including three minors, ''surrounded by local fauna that hates them and wants them dead''), not to mention that it seems wildly uncharacteristic that she would suddenly prioritize a fling with Marc over her friendship with Kim.
