* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct: This was one of the first films where Sandler played a decent guy with only a few angry, immature outbursts rather than the other way around, indicating he had some range. Sandler himself said he knew it was a different kind of movie and tried to dial it back.

* WTHCostumingDepartment: Nicely averted for the most part with very Eighties-appropriate looks...save for Julia's hair. How exactly does a late-90's Dido Flip translate into 1985 fashion?

Not YMMV.

* DontExplainTheJoke: A pretty egregious example in a mainstream comedy; the clerk at the airport has a Flock of Seagulls haircut, which is a pretty good visual gag. Then he says to Robbie (apt of nothing): "Do you guys like Flock of Seagulls?"

Moved to the Tear Jerker page.

* TearJerker:
** Robbie goes to tell Julia how he feels but sees her talking to herself in the mirror and assumes she's happy to be with Glenn. He leaves, heartbroken.
** Robbie's voice starting to crack upon seeing so many happy couples of various ages at the first wedding he works at after the break up.
** Robbie after being jilted at his wedding, especially the part where he is told the news by his sister and when he breaks a mirror in rage.
** Sammy pouring out his heart to Robbie.
--->'''Robbie:''' That's it, man, starting right now, me and you are going to be free and happy the rest of our lives!
--->'''Sammy:''' [[WhamLine I'm not happy. I'm miserable.]] ''(Slams his whiskey)''
--->'''Robbie:''' ...What?

--->'''Robbie:''' [[ComicallyMissingThePoint Yeah, I read that Fonzie wants to be a director and Barbarino, I think]]...[[Film/UrbanCowboy the mechanical bull movie?]] I didn't see it yet.

YMMV tropes can't be played with. If someone is acknowledged as having a point in-universe, then it's probably one of the other "Has A Point" tropes. In this case, it would Jerkass Has A Point.

* StrawmanHasAPoint: Subverted with Linda. While she ''did'' have some admittedly valid reasons for not marrying Robbie (he had very little money, his singing career never really took off, she wanted to have children - which would've been hugely impractical given Robbie's financial situation, etc.), any understanding we might have had for her position is shattered when Julia acknowledges the exact problems Linda cited ''but willingly helps Robbie to overcome them.'' (And, as Robbie points out, Linda could have brought her concerns up the day ''before'' the wedding, rather than completely humiliating him ''at the altar.'' Making it even worse is the fact that Robbie is financially strained and all the money for the wedding just got wasted.) As Robbie spends more time with Julia, he becomes rightly convinced that Linda was basically a GoldDigger, culminating in him [[spoiler: callously kicking her out of his sister's house after she tries to get back together with him.]]

* TheWoobie: Robbie, especially during the "Love Stinks" scene. Julia also qualifies, as she is with someone who blatantly doesn't appreciate her.
