* SelfFanservice: Sadako is the TropeCodifier for the StringyHairedGhostGirl and is usually portrayed as a decrepit rotting walking corpse. Fan artists often ignore the latter and instead {{Moe}} her up, with some even drawing her as a buxom and curvy woman. Not without precedence either, as Sadako is frequently described as beautiful by multiple characters in the original novel, and some adaptations like ''Ring: Kanzenban'' and the ''Rasen'' film use her for sex appeal and have her appear naked. Her looking like a decepit corpse is specifically an invention of the 1998 film.

** Many jokes have been made about how a cursed video tape is such a time period-specific plot point that would no longer work as desired in the present. The tape as a means to spread the curse was already discarded in the original sequel novel ''Spiral'' back in 1995.
** Another common joke is that the cursed video would have been uploaded to a video-sharing website like youtube if the films were made today. The idea of uploading the cursed video to the internet to wreak havoc across the world was used in the ''Rasen'' TV series made in 1999.
** Sadako/Eun-suh/Samara crawling out of the television is an iconic element from the film adaptations that was not in the novel, but it wasn't completely without precedence. In the radio drama made two years before the films Sadako manifests herself on a television screen in the climax (though she doesn't crawl out of it).
