* MoralEventHorizon: Mrs. Granderson crossed hers long before ''Nathan James'' arrived in Baltimore, although she justifies it by claiming it was something she had to do because the majority of humanity crossed the line first.
** Dr. Hamada firmly crosses it when he decides to [[spoiler: forcibly harvest stem cells from Kara's baby]].

Granderson as unintentional commentary rather than unfortunate implication.

* UnfortunateImplications: The Season 1 finale revealing Granderson as a villain with an army of militarized police aired around the same time that the riots in Ferguson and the criticism of the Police's militarization came to a head. Season 2 seems to be making this worse with Granderson's army of CorruptCops shaping up to be the season's main enemies just as more and more instances of unchecked police authority are being reported in the media.

* NightmareFuel:
** In the first episode, the crew discovers that while they've been away, a lethal virus has infected nearly 80% of the human population of the planet.
** The crew comes across a derelict Italian cruise ship. When they go on board they discover that the crew and passengers all got sick and died. The freezers are stacked full of corpses and the ballroom has been converted into a makeshift hospital that is now also full of corpses. They then discover one sick person is still alive, laying on cot surrounded by hundreds of dead. The man is dying and all they can do for him is give him morphine to ease his pain. Then one of the crew trips on a corpse and his biohazard mask comes off, so he kills himself.
** ''Nathan James'' finally makes contact with a remnant of the U.S. government operating out of Baltimore, only to find that [[spoiler: it's actually using the plague as a means of executing a FinalSolution, right down to incinerating the bodies in the city's power plant to provide electricity.]]

* IdiotPlot: The "El Toro" arc. If Chandler hadn't been so cagey he would probably have realized that El Toro, like any druglord, only cares about getting people shooed off the grounds as fast as possible and if what they want/need isn't too exorbitant, he'll gladly give it up as the price for just being left alone to keep his subject people in misery.

* TheScrappy: Kara and Danny fell into this the very first moment they appeared on screen, thanks to their tired, cliched RomanticPlotTumor that took time away from the main story, but not enough time to give them any more character development than "star-crossed lovers". Danny's behavior at the end of the third episode, disobeying orders and endangering the mission to protect Kara's safety (which was not in jeopardy) and then demanding that she stay away from him, incited groans from viewers who are now completely uninvested in their story.

* {{Narm}}: The funeral scene in an early episode. Whatever [[TearJerker sad emotions]] they were trying to get out of the viewing audience gets ruined when a grieving woman utters the word "selfie".
** The writers have various supporting characters go into emotional {{Expospeak}} speeches at the drop of a hat to try and flesh them out when a much shorter comment would provide just as much information and emotional heft at a fraction of the word count. Of note would be Granderson's reveal that she's a lesbian and was planning a trip to Paris with her girlfriend, and that the Command Master Chief blames himself for a car accident that killed his family.

* WhatAnIdiot: In the pilot, they are in absolutely no hurry to get off the Italian Cruise Liner. They've established that it is free of any dangers aside from the obvious virus. Despite this, two soldiers ''run'' from the galley, with bags loaded down with food, down a stairway they obviously hadn't come up in the first place or they would have remembered the bodies/trip hazards.
