* UnfortunateImplications: The Season 1 finale revealing Granderson as a villain with an army of militarized police aired around the same time that the riots in Ferguson and the criticism of the Police's militarization came to a head. Season 2 seems to be making this worse with Granderson's army of CorruptCops shaping up to be the season's main enemies just as more and more instances of unchecked police authority are being reported in the media.

* CompleteMonster: El Toro qualifies by [[spoiler: having his men dump the mayor's firstborn daughter on the other side of the river. Where the virus is.]]

* {{Squick}}: One episode features a drug dealer turned town leader akin to [[Series/{{Revolution}} Titus Andover]]. Not quite as ax crazy, but he's just as fond of rather young teenagers. [[spoiler:He gets poetic justice in the form of being stabbed with his own knife, which he had arrogantly tossed to the ground, believing that Chandler would not execute him.]]

** Some reviewers are saying that the romance and the characters were RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap with the reveal that Kara is [[spoiler: pregnant]], saying that the development, if handled correctly, adds an element of emotional heft to future arcs for Danny and Kara.

* NightmareFuel:
** In the first episode, the crew discovers that while they've been away, a lethal virus has infected nearly 80% of the human population of the planet.
** The crew comes across a derelict Italian cruise ship. When they go on board they discover that the crew and passengers all got sick and died. The freezers are stacked full of corpses and the ballroom has been converted into a makeshift hospital that is now also full of corpses. They then discover one sick person is still alive, laying on cot surrounded by hundreds of dead. The man is dying and all they can do for him is give him morphine to ease his pain. Then one of the crew trips on a corpse and his biohazard mask comes off, so he kills himself.
** ''Nathan James'' finally makes contact with a remnant of the U.S. government operating out of Baltimore, only to find that [[spoiler: it's actually using the plague as a means of executing a FinalSolution, right down to incinerating the bodies in the city's power plant to provide electricity.]]

* Narm: Characters have a tendency to make long InfoDump speeches about their backstories for the most tangential of reasons, leading some viewers and reviewers to go 'Huh?' and roll their eyes rather than sympathize with the tragedy the characters are facing.

* {{Narm}}: The funeral scene in an early episode. Whatever [[TearJerker sad emotions]] they were trying to get out of the viewing audience gets ruined when a grieving woman utters the word "selfie".
** The writers have various supporting characters go into emotional {{Expospeak}} speeches at the drop of a hat to try and flesh them out when a much shorter comment would provide just as much information and emotional heft at a fraction of the word count. Of note would be Granderson's reveal that she's a lesbian and was planning a trip to Paris with her girlfriend, and that the Command Master Chief blames himself for a car accident that killed his family.
