** One could argue that Mannix is the nicer (or less hateful) character from the hateful 8, more than John Ruth. For starters, he doesn't spend half the movie hitting a cuffed and defenseless woman in the face. John Ruth's past is at least as dirty as Mannix: He is a proud bounty hunter (basically a legal hitman) who loves seeing his bounties being hanged and brags about it. Mannix is no sadist, although a racist who participated in atrocities committed during war, having fought in a confederate militia. But with his father being a confederate war hero, it could be interpreted he enlisted mostly for a sense of duty and family expectation, reasons why many young men go to war, not blood thirst. By the end of the movie, there is little doubt he is actually sheriff, as he is honorable and zealous about the law, refusing to kill an unarmed man (even in a situation when it would be perfectly justifiable). He is mostly polite during the movie, and eventually overcomes his racism, as he befriends Warren, and doesn't kill him even when he has a perfect opportunity for doing so.
