** For the film adaption of the book, [[spoiler:many people saw it as a happy ending. However, the ending is actually much more bleak than the book's ending. Jerry still loses to the Vigils by playing into their hands by doing what they wanted him to do. Archie's "comeuppance" seems like a happy ending, but when you pay attention to Obie's "homework" assignments, [[LesserOfTwoEvils you realize he is much more cruel and Archie's assignments were actually not as bad in comparison]].]]

Early in the book Brother Leon smugly brags to Archie about how little effect he actually has the school, and threatens to destroy the Vigils if he disrupts the status quo. * FamilyUnfriendlyAesop: The first book teaches the world is run by awful, corrupt people who abuse their power because they can. But don't try to buck the system because you'll end up getting hurt, and nothing will meaningfully change anyway. (It's been speculated by some that this was done in response to the "Fight the power!" sixties, seeing as the book was published in 1974.)

Unapproved Magnificent Bastard entry.

* MagnificentBastard: In the second book, Archie finally draws a black marble and is forced take his own assignment to be "The Fool" on Fair Day. One responsibility involves sitting on a chair of a dunk booth, where his presence and reputation dissuades everyone from even trying. Only one student dares to play and misses Archie on purpose.

* ValuesDissonance: In the first book, the Vigils get Jerry to fight Janza by accusing him of being gay. Jerry says in the narration: "The worst thing in the world - to be called queer." ''Errr...''

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Obie and Archie. Jerry is actually the main character of the first book but just look at how much he's mentioned compared to these two.
* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop: The message of the first book is pretty much that the world is run by awful, corrupt people who abuse their power because they can. But don't try to buck the system and or you'll end up getting hurt, and nothing will meaningfully change.

Cut for having no context; if anyone wants to re-add, discuss it here first.

* CompleteMonster: Archie Costello, the unofficial leader of the Vigils. Think [[TheUsualSuspects Keyzer Soze]] as a teenager.
** Laurie in the second book even says that "there's a monster in Trinity, who runs the school like a Mafia and makes the other guys do the grossest things". What makes Archie so terrifying is his cold intelligence, subtlety, and total lack of sympathy for his victims. Janza, on the other hand, is a brutal and stupid tool of the Vigils.
*** Speaking of Janza, he's a BloodKnight in a teenagers body without ''any'' redeeming qualities. In ''The Chocolate War'', he reflects that he [[CombatSadomasochist "gets horny" beating people up.]] This is expounded upon in ''Beyond The Chocolate War''.
