* MagnificentBastard: [[IntrepidReporter Michael Seebach]] was once a reporter seeking the truth behind Paradigm City's mass amnesia and survived an AssassinationAttempt and became the vigilante "[[WellIntentionedExtremist Schwarzwald]]". Burning a group of the city's classist elites to death, Schwarzwald exposes Paradigm's corruption to hero Roger Smith, before engaging Roger in their giant robot [[HumongousMecha Megadeuses]]. Even after death, Schwarzwald's spirit continues his work, passing along the amnesia's true reason to Roger and repossessing his own Megadeus to have it [[PayEvilUntoEvil devour the vile Alan Gabriel]].
* MemeticMutation: It's anime Batman!

* HarsherInHindsight: A lot of Shwartzwald's monologues (not to mention the fact that the show [[spoiler:''proves him right'']]) come off as this after Creator/ChiakiKonaka showed support for numerous controversial conspiracy theories like the Great Reset and anti-vaccination in 2021.
** Making matters worse is the issue regarding how [[spoiler:the Megadeus are all based on [[{{Golem}} golems]] from [[UsefulNotes/{{Judaism}} Jewish mythology]] and serve as the [[GreaterScopeVillain Greater Scope Villains]] of the series [[TheChessmaster working from behind the scenes]]]] combined with Konaka's anti-semitic rants and aforementioned conspiracism... ''it's not a good look.''

* CrazyIsCool: Schwarzwald lost his mind before the series began but he's still a hammy, quick thinking, powerhouse who manages to be a serious threat with his own Megadeus.

* VillainDecay: The anime version of Beck, though considering many people found his LaughablyEvil nature to be amusing as hell, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

* ExistentialHorror: Imagine you're living in Paradigm City, an inexplicable holdout of civilization against [[AfterTheEnd the violent destruction of Earth's surface]]. It's always gloomy and cold, thanks to the thick clouds, not to mention [[CrapsackWorld rife with poverty and crime]]. [[OntologicalMystery What scarce history you do have]] is marked by periodic battles between powerful titans that tower over the skyline. You don't know who or what they are, where they come from, or why they fight (except maybe [[DarkIsNotEvil that big black one]]), and [[PoliceAreUseless law enforcement is powerless to stop them]]. But once the fighting ends and the debris stops falling, you go on with life. Then one day, [[spoiler: the city starts shaking, and this time it doesn't stop. Not until [[DeathFromAbove everything is entirely bombarded into ruin]] over a few hours. It even burns away some of that perpetual cloud cover. So you look up at the sky, and it's... [[EerilyOutOfPlaceObject stagelights]]. A grid of gigantic stagelights, a mile up in the air and stretching beyond the horizon. It's utterly impossible. And yet there they are, now falling onto the city. [[FromBadToWorse And then]], just as you're [[EldritchLocation beginning to fathom the enormity of this revelation]], there's suddenly a great explosion of light high in the air, and ''the entire sky vanishes'', and in its place is '''the computational substrate of the universe'''. At this point, there's a fair chance you'd be a gibbering wreck.]]

* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: The opening theme sounds suspiciously similar to Queen's ''Film/{{Flash Gordon|1980}}'' theme. To the point that when Bandai remastered the series on DVD, they had to replace it with a new song. Meanwile, the second season's opening, "Respect," never even made it to the first DVD release - it was almost a note-for-note copy of Gerry Anderson's "Series/{{UFO}}." Both openings ended up airing on Adult Swim.
