* MagnificentBitch: [[BadassNormal Amanda Waller]], also known as "The Wall", is a genius specialist who is ruthlessly dedicated to [[KnightTemplar protecting her country]] by any means necessary. [[Characters/SuicideSquadSupportStaff Forming the Suicide Squad]], Waller sends them on mission after mission, making endless plans to eliminate their targets and to complete their missions, while not hesitating to sacrifice them. Known for a ruthless, intimidating nature, Waller is one of the few who can even intimidate Batman and when she finds herself being taken over by the Thinker cap, she shatters it as not to let anything else control her. Waller is even one of the [[NervesOfSteel few mortals capable]] of staring down [[Characters/NewGodsDarkseid Darkseid]] himself, and whenever she falls from power, she knows all she has to do is wait for when they give her authority again out of the inevitable need for someone like Waller to do the work nobody else will.

* MoralEventHorizon: Captain Boomerang crosses it early in the Ostrander run when he allows another squad member to get gunned down simply because he personally didn't care for her.

* NewerThanTheyThink: Despite being viewed as the center of Deadshot's character by many people in recent years, his daughter wasn't formally introduced until the 2005 Deadshot miniseries (55 years after Deadshot was created and 17 years after the character was redefined by John Ostrander).

** In an early issue Rick Flag and Comicbook/AmandaWaller get into a fight over mind-wiping old Suicide Squad members so they don't reveal information about the squad. Mind-wiping to hide secrets would become a much more serious problem when regular heroes start doing it in ''ComicBook/IdentityCrisis''. Even weirder, Waller of all people eventually relents and decides mind-wiping is too extreme.

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: A lot of Deadshot's more [[PetTheDog selfless moments]] are open to this. Does he actually care about the people he helps or does he only help them in order to benefit himself?

* HilariousInHindsight: Count Vertigo and Kanto wind up fighting each other in Issue 35, which is funny considering that both characters would later be voiced by Michael York in the Franchise/DCAnimatedUniverse shows (the former appearing in an episode of ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries'' and the latter in an episode of ''WesternAnimation/SupermanTheAnimatedSeries'').

** Deadshot. The series put the character on the map (he had less than a dozen pre-Squad appearances) and is largely credited for his popularity amongst fans. Because of this, he became the team's de facto field leader in the New 52 series.
*** Up until [[Film/TheSuicideSquad the 2021 movie]], Deadshot was the only member of the team to have been included in each and every movie or TV appearance (WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague, Series/{{Smallville}}, Series/{{Arrow}}, [[WesternAnimation/BatmanAssaultOnArkham the two]] [[WesternAnimation/SuicideSquadHellToPay animated movies]], and [[Film/SuicideSquad2016 the movie]], plus he is set to appear in the [[VideoGame/SuicideSquadKillTheJusticeLeague upcoming video game]]).

** The squad itself in appearances in other books. Virtually every time they've shown up in guest spots, it's someone's depiction of a "classic" line-up, leading to people hoping for a revival.

*** Up until [[Film/TheSuicideSquad the 2021 movie]], Deadshot was the only member of the team to have been included in each and every movie or TV appearance (WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague, Smallville, Arrow, [[WesternAnimation/BatmanAssaultOnArkham the two]] [[WesternAnimation/SuicideSquadHellToPay animated movies]], and [[Film/SuicideSquad2016 the movie]], plus he is set to appear in the [[VideoGame/SuicideSquadKillTheJusticeLeague upcoming video game]]).

* NightmareFuel: In the New 52: [[spoiler:as of issue 6, Yo-yo is still alive inside King Shark's stomach and he appears briefly to beg for help.]]

** The New 52 reboot of Suicide Squad didn't make the best first impression. A lot of the people who would have eagerly supported such a book were put off by ComicBook/SecretSix getting canceled seemingly to be replaced by the new Squad, and the new costumes (particularly for Harley Quinn) were... not well-received. Since the book officially launched, it has attracted a fair share of complaints for its characterizations that seem a bit off and for what some consider to be pointless design changes, such as Amanda Waller's slimming down.

*** Deadshot is the only member of the team to have been included in each and every movie or TV appearance (WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague, Smallville, Arrow, WesternAnimation/BatmanAssaultOnArkham, and [[Film/SuicideSquad2016 the movie]]).

* TearJerker:
** Flo's death in the original series. Oracle (who had grown fond of the girl) even breaks down in tears after Waller tells her what happened.
** In the ComicBook/DCRebirth series: how Rustam destroys Waller in ''Suicide Squad #10'', demolishing her IAmAMonster and TheDreaded facade.

** Windfall describing her DarkAndTroubledPast, particularly the RapeAndRevenge incident which drove her to the Squad, and later asking another teammate if God hates her after everything that's happened. Her facial expressions during both scenes really sell it.
