* EnsembleDarkhorse: Bud Cooper was cited as a highlight even in negative reviews of the film, thanks to Creator/OscarIsaac's memorably slimy performance.

Cut the Complete Monster part since it wasn't approved and Gardner doesn't fit the heinous standard.

* CompleteMonster: Gardner Lodge, period. He conspires with his sister in law Margaret (whom he is also in a romantic relationship with) to have his disabled wife Rose murdered and her death staged to look like a burglary gone wrong, then claim the insurance money from her death and run away with Margaret, abandoning his only son Nicky at Military School. Afterwards, When Nicky begins to catch on to the plan, Gardner attempts to gaslight him to keep him off the scent, and also murders a (admittedly crooked) claims investigator who had discovered their scheme. At the end, after Margaret is killed and his plan is left in shambles, he threatens his own son with death unless he keep quiet about the whole thing. Needless to say, when this guy finally bites it from a poisoned sandwich, the audience will not be feeling sorry for him.

* TheWoobie: Nicky. Oh poor, sweet Nicky. In a film full of racism, fraud, and murder, Nicky suffers the most psychological punishment out of any of the characters over a period of just a few weeks, and he's still ''just a child.'' First, his mother is murdered and it later seems that his father arranged it, and Gardner proceeds to gaslight him whenever he brings it up. Then his mother's killers come back and murder his aunt, his uncle and try to kill him as well. Finally, his own father threatens to shoot him if he doesn't keep his mouth shut about his crimes, at which point the kid is reduced to a crying wreck. Fortunately, Gardner accidentally poisons himself with a sandwich, and come morning the poor boy is so broken by everything that's happened that all he can think to do is go outside and quietly play catch with the neighbour's kid.

* CompleteMonster: Gardner Lodge, oh so very much.
