* DiagnosedByTheAudience: Shrimp may have ASD. He's got a booming monotone voice, has a singular hobby, weak posture with a blank facial expression and Charlie remarks that his fashion sense is lacking.

* HeartwarmingInHindsight: ''Smiling Friends'' featured Creator/GilbertGottfried's final role prior to his passing in April 2022 (at least during his lifetime; the film ''Hassle at the Castle'', and an episode of WesternAnimation/ParadisePD, both of which he also participated in, were released posthumously). Who was one of his final roles? {{God}} himself, of course.

Extra heartwarming considering Gilbert's filmography largely consisted of jerks and opportunists who don't exude any masculinity, so playing a benevolent figure with a HeroicBuild feels particularly touching.

* MexicansLoveSpeedyGonzales: Pim's bogan family are popular among Australian viewers. It helps that Michael Cusack himself is Australian.

* NauseaFuel: For most of the pilot, Desmond looks pretty disgusting. Not only does he have overly-detailed features, but his overgrown body hair and nails imply that he hasn't bathed in ages. And when he smiles at the end, you can just make out his plaque-coated teeth. Thankfully, HeCleansUpNicely.

** On ''[=OneyPlays=]'' Zach promised that, during a {{LetsPlay}} of the game ''VideoGame/{{Worms}}'', that a worm would make an appearance in Episode 2. He wasn't kidding. Some providers list "Mr. Frog" as episode one, though Pim eats worms in "Shrimp's Odyssey" so either way there are worms in Episode 2.

* LGBTFanbase: The show has proven to be quite a hit with queer audiences thanks to the abundance of HoYay between Pim, Charlie, and Alan and their generally relatable personalities. Charlie in particular is especially popular among the bara crowd thanks to his overweight appearance, helped by the fact that he's even appeared naked (half and fully) on a couple occasions.

** Some of the purposefully uncomfortable gags, such as the Friends' awkward interactions with DJ Spitz and the Brazilian man, can be doubly unsettling for viewers who've had to deal with similar situations before (encountering a mentally unstable homeless person and dealing with scammers/potential muggers while on vacation respectively), especially given how realistic the characters' responses are to these situations.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: President Jimble divided fans between people who enjoyed his bumbling antics and general ineffectualness, and people who disliked his character for his heavy amount of ToiletHumor and [[RogerRabbitEffect live-action appearance]] being a bit awkward, even for a show with as heavy MediumBlending as this.
