* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: A chief complaint about the movie is the rewriting of Himeko and Kakeru's relationship. The manga demonstrates their issues stemmed from how Kakeru's health problems stopped him from being an astronaut and caused a riff between him and Himeko. The movie instead has Kakeru lashing out at Himeko because she doesn't share his beliefs about Princess Kaguya and makes him far more hostile. Likewise, Himeko's agency is removed as she's relegated to just Kakeru's love interest, compared to how she destroys Princess Snow Kaguya's crystal body in the manga and directly interacts with the Sailor Senshi about destroying the comet.

** Kakeru, who is otherwise a KindheartedCatLover, when he snaps at Himeko when she doesn't believe in Princess Kakeru, instead it comes acoss as overreactionary and uncalled for.

* QuestionableCasting: The original dub keeping Jill Frappier for the voice of Luna's beautiful young human form, even though her elderly British-accented take on the character was highly unfitting (though to some, having her older instead of remaining a 14-year-old human in the 2000 dub makes Kakeru and Luna's relationship less Squick squicky).

** Himeko's treated pretty badly by Kakeru, screaming at her just because she honestly doesn't believe there's a real Princess Kaguya living on the moon and is concerned for Kakeru's mental health that he keeps obsessing over the legend and insisting upon its truth.

** The original 2000 dub has many examples:
*** The scene with Luna crying was ruined with her making cat "meow" noises, and basically just sounding like a dying cat instead.
*** The Snow Dancers made strange vocal noises that reminded many fans of "barking chihuahuas."
*** Sailor Pluto's voice actress' ditzy delivery of "You know, it's almost as if time has stopped!"
** The 2018 dub is a huge improvement, but still has Luna tell Kakeru, "I love you, my space man." Resulting in unintentional laughter from audiences.

One sided example of BBC.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: Luna's actions in this story, both the manga version and the film, are highly contentious among readers. Many felt the way she treats Artemis is rather abhorrent, ignoring him and basically trying to cheat on him with Kakeru (while the rest of the girls (save Minako in the movie) think it's great she's fallen in love) and then going back to him at the end like he was on standby or something. It's somehow even worse in the manga where Artemis actually told Luna it was okay to go to Kakeru despite how scared he was of Luna leaving him. This, coupled with the shoddy way Luna tends to treat Artemis in the original series (frequently attacking him when she's mad or jumping to conclusions, cheating on him again with Yaten), is one of the reasons why Luna's considered UnintentionallyUnsympathetic. Her being around 14 in human form doesn't help to some people.
