* CharacterDerailment[=/=]{{Flanderization}}: [[BrokenBase Though your mileage may vary on whether or not it's there]]--and if it is, whether or not [[TropesAreNotBad it's a good thing]].

* UnpleasableFanbase: A lot of the fans who formerly complained about the TV series being too angsty now complain because the movies don't have enough drama and angst.
** Other complaints leveled against the movies have been that 1.0 was [[ItsTheSameNowItSucks too similar to the original]] and thus pointless, while 2.0 was [[TheyChangedItNowItSucks too different from the original]] and thus inferior.

UncannyValley: In spite of the character being more sympathetic overall, ''Rebuild of Evangelion'' manages to have Rei be even further in the UncannyValley. The ominous BGM that always plays in her presence (at least in the beginning) made it quite clear that Shinji definitely senses something ''very'' unsettling in her.

* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Inevitable, considering that the original series has been analyzed and overanalyzed for every ''day'' of the decade since its release. Some of the golden oldies of the fandom even go as far as to declare ''Rebuild'' (2.0 in particular) an utterly dumb piece of trash devoid of any sort of creative merit that will somehow travel back in time and [[RuinedForever kill the original.]]

** Probably justified, since [[spoiler:Mari had activated the Berserk mode of Unit-02; with the EVA set free and awakened, and considering the empathic link between the pilot and the Unit, all that crossed Mari's mind probably was "KILL, MAIM, DESTROY, BURN, RIP APART, EVISCERATE, etc.", thus tossing all tactical thoughts through the window]]. Then again, her introduction suggests that this is her normal state.
*** That and... come now, she had tried everything she knew at this point and ''nothing'' else was working on the angel. Plus, her tactic worked ''somewhat'' if you consider that she managed to [[spoiler: rip apart Zeruel's AT Field to allow Rei to try and nuke him.]] And whatever anyone might say, this is also her [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome Crowning Moment of]] ''[[PrecisionFStrike FU]]''[[GoshDangItToHeck ***** ]] [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome Awesome.]]

* FetishFuel: Does noone else find Asuka's [[spoiler:eye patch]] to be ''incredibly'' sexy?

** The bolds, of course, [[spoiler:signify waiting for the other shoe to drop in ''3.0'', alongside everything else.]]
** [[spoiler: She still has the same crushing self-esteem issues as ever and angsts quite a lot about this. But this time she gets over it, to which extent remains to be seen.]]
** One smiling shot in a trailer doesn't say she didn't angst about it first.

--> Ikari Shinji: Ho boy, where to start on this kid? How about this? He's a selfish little prick who'll gladly doom the human race. Why do I come to that conclusion? Very simple, ''he got back on that train''. You see, one of the big themes I picked up about the original NGE was that Shinji never got back on the train out of Tokyo-3 and kept on going in the world, no matter how much he wanted to bolt like a white-tailed dear with a catamont in the field. It's an interesting bit of symbolism, but it's completely shot in 2.0 because Shinji ''does'' get back on that train. More then that though, NGE!Shinji didn't know exactly what was at stake in the battles he was fighting, Rebuild!Shinji knows that if an Angel penetrates Terminal Dogma every human on the planet will die, and yet he still doesn't fight. In fact, even when Mari tells him exactly what's going on, and how everyone needs him, he still just sits there and sulks. NGE Shinji just needed to know that the world was at stake and why, and he rushed to help. That's not good enough for Rebuild!Shinji though, no, he doesn't care about everyone dying or the Geofront being destroyed – hell, he caused half the damage! In fact, the only thing which spurs Shinji into action is Rei being eaten by Zeruel, that's all he cares about – nobody and nothing else, but the clone of his mother that he has a crush on. What. A. Jerk.

* AdaptationDistillation or AdaptationDecay: [[YourMileageMayVary Take your pick]].
** So far, it's also hard to tell whether ''Rebuild'' is LighterAndSofter or DarkerAndEdgier. The first movie does seem even more violent (both physically and psychologically) than the original, but Misato seems more overtly nice to Shinji and we don't know yet how far the school antics and {{Tsundere}} slapstick will go.
*** It definitely is easier to understand, so long as you've seen the original series first. Whether this is good or bad is a question for the ages.

* ReplacementScrappy: In particular, some of the fanbase deliberately considers Asuka ''Shikinami'' to be a ''much-inferior'' character than Asuka ''Soryu''. This is made hilarious by the fact that the loudest complainers are Asuka/Shinji shippers, with several FanFic authors amongst their ranks who have written ''boatloads'' of stories that have Asuka acting in a way very similar to how she acts in ''2.0''.

** Some fans are calling [[TookALevelInBadass the new Shinji]] "[[TengenToppaGurrenLagann Simon]]ji".

** Parts of the soundtrack border on this due to rather odd English lyrics.
* MemeticMolester: Just try to do an image search for Mari ''without'' finding at least one fanart of her molesting Asuka. Or Rei. Or both.
