** Brooke pursues Lucas, and after they get together, she quickly falls for him before he cheats with her best friend Peyton in Season 1. Come Season 3, Brooke gets back together with Lucas, ''constantly'' paranoid of history repeating with her boyfriend falling for her best friend again (turning out eventually that she was right all along since in the meantime Lucas and Peyton actually find their back to each other and then get together for real after she and Lucas split up again for good).
** Nathan and Haley get together in season 1 and at the end of the season they impulsively get married. Come season 2, they start arguing all the time since they struggle to adjust their new life as a married couple while Haley begins to distance herself from Nathan once she discovers her passion in music and then she meets the musician Chris Keller, who flirts with her and offers her to go on tour with him: Haley accepts and leaves Nathan without saying ''anything'' after cheating on him ''twice'' with Keller. Then, she stays on tour for ''months'' even if she knows Nathan was crushed by this whole situation (and as a consequence even attempted ''suicide''), until she suddenly decides to come back home only after Lucas made her come to her senses at the end of the season. Once she’s back, after keeping her away for some time Nathan forgives her and they get back together.
** After Lucas and Peyton's LongDistanceRelationship results in their relationship becoming strained, Lucas attempts to save the relationship by proposing - only for Peyton to ask him to wait a year. Lucas takes this as an outright refusal, and breaks up with Peyton (who spent years struggling with abandonment issues) by leaving her in their hotel room without so much as a note saying goodbye. Come Peyton's return to Tree Hill after three years, she still wants to repair the relationship, even after she watches him say "I do" to another woman and drunkenly accuses her of ruining his life after being left at the altar in said wedding. Despite all this, the two are able to make amends soon after and definitely get back together, ending up HappilyMarried one season later.

* VindicatedByHistory: Season 2. Whilst the season as a whole is considered the weakest of the four set in High School and of the first six of the show in general, it is viewed little more favorably following [[SeasonalRot Seasons 7 and 8]] or the [[TooBleakStoppedCaring melodrama heavy Season 9]]. However, in the years since the series ended, Season 2 has gained a wider appreciation for Anna Tagarro's ComingOutStory, and the rare positive portrayal of an LGBTQ+ character in [[TurnOfTheMillennium an early 2000s produced series]] who doesn't suffer from a [[BuryYourGays tragic end to their story]].

It was dragged out until just before the mid-season finale of Season 4, even though the issue was completely resolved at the end of Season 1, with Lucas clearly choosing Peyton over Brooke - only for his own bad decisions earlier in the season to cause Peyton to end thing with him.

** Jamie was considered cute and adorable in the beginning, but some fans started getting tired of him especially since he seemed to get more and more screen time, ''even more than his parents'' and because he acted way too smart for a kid his age, with Nathan and Haley treating him more like a young adult then a kid(even letting him give a speech during a wedding). However to be fair, Jamie getting more screen time was a case of RealLifeWritesThePlot, due to Creator/BethanyJoyLenz being pregnant and going on maternity leave during the later episodes of Season 8, and Creator/JamesLafferty only signing up to appear in half of Season 9.

** Season two is the highest rated of all the seasons as far as viewership goes thanks to the show becoming a hit during its first season: despite this, most of the fandom considers it to be the weakest amongst the four set in high school and the first six of the show in general. In fact, season three had a huge dip in ratings even thought it is generally considered a significant improvement from the previous one as lots of viewers lost their interest in the show precisely because of season two’s poor quality.

** During Season 2, Lucas briefly dates Anna and breaks things off with her by telling her that whilst he likes her, there's someone that he's been lying to himself about in regards to how he feels about her and that she's currently slipping away. At the same time this is happening, Peyton is in the midst of a downward spiral and had earlier snapped at Lucas over being a bad friend, so one would assume he was referring to her. Nope, he was talking about Brooke, whose big drama causing Lucas to feel like she was slipping away was... dating Felix. Or at least this is what we can assume from the montage of the scene since [[WordOfGod Mark Schwahn]] stated in the DVD Commentary of the episode that Lucas’ line was actually referred to Peyton, but he made Lucas go to Brooke’s instead (without in fact specifying why he went to her) for no other reason than to create “confusion” in the love triangle and not because he was actually talking about her, so considering all this and thus the usefulness of the scene (which in fact will even not be mentioned anymore), both the ''serious tone'' used by Lucas and the line turn out to be even more awkward… No wonder Season 2 is considered the weakest among the four set in high school (and the first six of the show in general) and a SophomoreSlump…

this is what we can assume from going to affect, he mentions Mouth, alongside Whitey (Who's about to retire) and Skills (Who's relying on the montage State Championship win for a college scholarship), despite Mouth ''not even being part of the scene since [[WordOfGod Mark Schwahn]] stated Ravens team in the DVD Commentary of the episode that Lucas’ line was actually referred to Peyton, but he made Lucas go to Brooke’s instead (without in fact specifying why he went to her) for no other reason than to create “confusion” in the love triangle and not because he was actually talking about her, so considering all this any way'' and thus not affected by the usefulness of the scene (which in fact will even not be mentioned anymore), both the ''serious tone'' used by Lucas and the line turn out to be even more awkward… No wonder Season 2 is considered the weakest among the four set in high school (and the first six of the show in general) and a SophomoreSlump…loss.

* RomanticPlotTumor: The (painfully) long-running Peyton/Lucas/Brooke love triangle (which can also be seen as an ArcFatigue). It was dragged on for almost FOUR SEASONS for no reason even though it was completely resolved at the end of season 1 and thus by making the characters act in illogical and forced ways and repeat the same mistakes over and over again.
** In season 1, Lucas chose Peyton as he was in love with her and got involved with Brooke just to rebound Peyton, with no real interest in her, but then, during the second season, rather than progressing the Lucas/Peyton relationship, they basically put a ResetButton for everyone involved: not only Lucas and Peyton barely interacted for the entire season, but they went so far that basically a {{Retcon}} from the whole story set-up occurred, with both of them seemingly forgetting everything that happened in season 1, Lucas [[StrangledByTheRedString suddenly deciding he was truly interested in Brooke out of nowhere]] halfway through the season (despite having even said to her face she didn’t love her at the end of season 1) and same going for Peyton [[StrangledByTheRedString with Jake]]. All this was made much worse by season 2 taking place right after season 1, with no TimeSkip between them, [[AudienceAlienatingEra basically making you feel like you were watching another show]]. When they finally decided to make the story get back on track at the beginning of season 3 and restart the Lucas/Peyton relationship, they spent the entire season making Peyton realize she really never loved Jake and was still in love with Lucas. In the meantime, they made Brooke and Lucas get back together and their relationship was nothing more than them making out or fighting all the time about how they had nothing in common and weren’t able to get each other or communicate at all (things they had already realized during their first relationship in season 1) and because Brooke was always freaking out and jealous due to being aware all along that Lucas had lingering feelings for Peyton, but for some reason she stuck with him, whilst he went on being in denial and was not willing to admit the truth - that he really still was in love with Peyton. The writers forcedly held them together in this sort of MasochismTango until the beginning of the fourth season by constantly finding new and unconvincing expedients not to break them up, even though basically every episode of season 3 could have been the right one to do that, to the point that they could have avoided to make them get back together in the first place, especially considering how forced everything was. Then, before they finally put Lucas and Peyton together in season 4, they made Brooke and Lucas definitely accept they really weren't in love with each other and completely wrong for one another, then Lucas realized Peyton was the one for him all along, basically going back to the exact same point they left things at the end of season 1 and thus making basically everything that happened in season 2 and 3 regarding the love triangle completely useless and pointless.

** When they finally decided to make the story get back on track at the beginning of season 3 and restart the Lucas/Peyton relationship, they spent the entire season making Peyton realize she really never loved Jake and was still in love with Lucas.
** Then, before they finally put Lucas and Peyton together in season 4, they made Brooke and Lucas definitely accept they really weren't in love with each other and completely wrong for one another, then Lucas realized Peyton was the one for him all along, basically going back to the exact same point they left things at the end of season 1 and thus making basically everything that happened in season 2 and 3 regarding the love triangle completely useless and pointless.

** Brooke and Lucas fall into this even ''twice'' during the first three seasons of the show. The show makes a point that the characters have never really interacted prior to Lucas joining the Ravens, with their relationship being one-sided as Brooke falls for him over the course of a six week long relationship that largely takes place off-screen and with half of the on-screen relationship spent with Lucas either cheating on Brooke with Peyton or in a coma, while the story makes it clear that Lucas doesn’t love Brooke, but he’s in love with Peyton. After the truth comes out about Lucas cheating on Brooke, she's openly hostile towards him for the remainder of the first season (to the point she pretends to be pregnant to take revenge on him for his betrayal) while he basically ignores her and then they barely interact over the course of the first half of the second season (which is even set right after season 1 with no time jump between the season 1 finale and the season 2 premiere). Despite all this, Brooke seems to still be interested in him even though she openly admits in several occasions that she knows how unhealthy her feelings for him and their relationship were while Lucas suddenly decides that he's truly interested in her out of nowhere in the second half of the season. And all this mess turned out to be even worse since it was made just to put them back together in season 3 and then break them up again for good at the beginning of season 4, both realizing that they really had never been in love with each other, when it came time for the writers to make the story definitely get back on track and finally put the OfficialCouple Leyton together for real.

** Jake and Peyton. The characters didn't interact for the first half of season one, before they started to become closer after Jake publicly revealed he was a father. Throughout the second half of the season, Jake and Peyton's relationship comes off as platonic, before they suddenly share a brief kiss before he leaves Tree Hill to protect his daughter - and the entire time Peyton and Jake's relationship was developing, she was still in a WillTheyOrWontThey with Lucas, who was the one she was canonically in love with. When they get together the following season with basically no build up and making Peyton suddenly being in love with Jake out of nowhere, the show even acts as if they had been an epic romance in the waiting, but their history didn't lend itself to that at all. And all this mess was even pointless since the story gets back on track in season 3 and Peyton realizes she really never loved Jake and that he was never more than a replacement for Lucas.
** Lucas and Lindsey are a Type-4, becoming a couple at some point in the 4 year time skip between seasons 4 and 5 after Lucas' break-up with Peyton. At no point in the season are viewers told how or when their relationship moved from professional to romantic, and subsquently the fandom never really bought into the relationship.

** {{Averted}} with Lucas and Peyton. The two are seen as this only by Brucas and Jeyton shippers, who claim that Peyton's late season 3 revelation that she was still in love with Lucas was purely because the writers wanted to split Brooke and Lucas after [[RealLifeWritesThePlot their actors broke up in real life]] and because Jake's actor wasn't going to be available anymore (even though no one involved in the production ever confirmed all this and WordOfGod itself repeatedly stated that it was ''always'' meant to be Lucas and Peyton). When one rewatches the third season with the knowledge of Peyton's feelings in mind, it becomes beyond obvious how subtle a lot of the build-up to TheReveal actually was. Besides, a lot of ShipTease between the two of them was made during the entire season and their relationship was being built up even since the beginning of season 1, keeping them in a constant WillTheyOrWontThey situation for the rest of the time until they finally got together in season 4, so it's definitely not the case.

** When they finally decided to make the story get back on track at the beginning of season 3 and restart the Lucas/Peyton relationship, they spent the entire season making Peyton realize she really never loved Jake and was still in love with Lucas. In the meantime, they made Brooke and Lucas get back together and their relationship was nothing more than them making out or fighting all the time about how they had nothing in common and weren’t able to get each other or communicate (something they had already realized during their first relationship in season 1) and because Brooke was always freaking out and jealous due to being aware all along that Lucas had lingering feelings for Peyton, but for some reason she stuck with him, whilst he went on being in denial and was not willing to admit the truth - that he really still was in love with Peyton. The show makes a point that the characters have never really interacted prior to Lucas joining the Ravens, with their relationship being a one-sided Type-1 as Brooke falls for him over the course of a six week long relationship that largely takes place off-screen and with half of the on-screen relationship spent with Lucas either cheating on Brooke with Peyton or in a coma and the story making it clear that Lucas doesn’t love Brooke, but he’s in love with Peyton. Despite all this, Brooke seems to still be interested in him even though she openly admits in several occasions that she knows how unhealthy her feelings for him and their relationship were while Lucas suddenly decides that he's truly interested in her out of nowhere in the second half of the season, making this a Type-2. All this was made just to make them get back together and then break up again for good, both realizing that between them it has never been real love, when it finally came for the writers to put the OfficialCouple Leyton together for real.

** Jake and Peyton. The characters didn't interact for the first half of season one, before they started to become closer after Jake publically revealed he was a father. Thoughout the second half of the season, Jake and Peyton's relationship comes off as platonic, before they suddenly share a brief kiss before he leaves Tree Hill to protect his daughter - and the entire time Peyton and Jake's relationship was developing, she was still in a WillTheyOrWontThey with Lucas, who was the one she was truly in love with. When they get together the following season with basically no build up and making Peyton suddenly being in love with Jake out of nowhere, the show even acts as if they had been an epic romance in the waiting, but their history didn't lend itself to that at all.

** In season 1, Lucas chose Peyton as he was in love with her and got involved with Brooke just to rebound Peyton, with no real interest in her, but then, during the second season, rather than progressing the Lucas/Peyton relationship, they basically put a ResetButton for everyone involved: not only Lucas and Peyton barely interacted for the entire season, but they went so far that basically a {{Retcon}} from the whole story set-up occurred, with both of them seemingly forgetting everything that happened in season 1, Lucas [[StrangledByTheRedString suddenly deciding she was in love with Brooke out of nowhere]] halfway through the season (despite having even said to her face she didn’t love her at the end of season 1) and same going for Peyton [[StrangledByTheRedString with Jake]]. All this was made much worse by season 2 taking place right after season 1, with no TimeSkip between the two, [[AudienceAlienatingEra basically making you feel like you were watching another show]].

** {{Averted}} with Lucas and Peyton. The two are seen as this only by Brucas and Jeyton shippers, who claim that Peyton's late season 3 revelation that she was still in love with Lucas was purely because the writers wanted to split Brooke and Lucas after [[RealLifeWritesThePlot their actors broke up in real life]] and because Jake's actor wasn't going to be available anymore (things never confirmed by anyone involved in the production and WordOfGod repeatedly stating that it was always meant to be Lucas and Peyton). When one rewatches the third season with the knowledge of Peyton's feelings in mind, it becomes apparent how subtle a lot of the build-up to TheReveal actually was. Besides, they made a lot of ShipTease between the two of them during the entire season and their relationship was being built up even since the beginning of season 1 and then the two were kept in a constant WillTheyOrWontThey for the rest of the time until they finally got together in season 4, so it's definitely not the case.

** When they finally decided to make the story get back on track at the beginning of season 3 and restart the Lucas/Peyton relationship, they spent the entire season making Peyton realize she really never loved Jake and was still in love with Lucas. In the meantime, they made Brooke and Lucas get back together and their relationship was nothing more than them making out or fighting all the time about how they had nothing in common and weren’t able to get each other or communicate (something they had already realized during their first relationship in season 1) and because Brooke was always freaking out and jealous due to being aware all along that Lucas' had lingering feelings for Peyton, but for some reason she stuck with him, whilst he went on being in denial and was not willing to admit the truth - that he really still was in love with Peyton.

* RomanticPlotTumor: The (painfully) long-running Peyton/Lucas/Brooke love triangle (which can also be seen as an ArcFatigue).
