* BaseBreakingCharacter: The Main trio consisting of Anu, Octavia, and Fran have each proven to be some of the most divisive characters in the entire series, to the point were it can be argued that only Ava is right behind them.
** You either like Anu for being a WideEyedIdealist who genuially wants to make the universe a better place and has relatable anxiety issues, or you dislike her for coming off as self-righteous hypocrite who's lack of confidence comes off as irritating.
* BrokenBase: Although Borderlands is known for it's comedic tone, the previous games balanced it out by having a healthy dose of action and bits of drama. So for the comedy to be given the main focus for New Tales to the point were some of the developers called it "A playable sitcom", heavily divided the fan-base between those who enjoyed the comedy of the series and those who believed it would heavily hinder the story. It doesn't help that the comedy of the series was already divisive.

* ContestedSequel: Although the general consensus in the fandom is that it isn’t as good as the first game, there is a split on whether New Tales is a straight up case of Sequelitis or if it is a good game on its own merits. On the other hand, there is a small number of fans that actually consider the game an EvenBetterSequel.

That’s not even mentioning the fact that in order to do it’s basic function, the device requires eridium which is both a valuable resource and not exactly easy to come by, thus rendering the device AwesomeButImpractical from a technical standpoint and not exactly one that could be mass produced easily when compared to something like the standard assault rifle. Anu’s demonstration of the device certainly did not help her case either.

* AudienceAlienatingPremise: The game received a heavily divisive reception for a variety of reasons. Mainly it was an InNameOnly sequel to a highly acclaimed game that ended on an unresolved cliffhanger, a tone that focused entirely on the comedic aspects of the series with little drama to balance it out, and the fact that no notable or fan favorite characters from the previous Borderlands games play any role in this story, and get a cameo appearance at best and instead the focus is entirely given to a new cast of characters that didn't exactly leave a good first impression to most fans. The overall backlash is similar to the one VideoGame/Borderlands3 received, but while that game had at least better received gameplay, New Tales being an interactive story means it also takes this away.

* FridgeBrilliance:
** In Borderlands 3, Tediore was established as being looked down on by the other major corporations and had several jokes made at their expense. So it might seem odd that in the beginning of the game Rhys shows notable fear of Coldwell during their first meeting. But given that they Atlas was still recovering from their previous war with Maliwan, it makes sense that the last thing Rhys would want is start another corporate war.
** Despite being the main antagonist this time around, The game actually shows why Tediore is seen as a laughing stock In-Universe.
*** Although they weren’t without their quirks, The previous Corporate Militias throughout the series (Such as Atlas’s Crimson Lance and Dahl’s Lost Legion.) were shown to be efficient enough soldiers that were able to be a sufficient challenge for Vault Hunters. But The Tediore soldiers here are shown to practically be incompetent goons that can’t even shoot properly and just have enough discipline to be above bandits. (but not by much.) It’s honestly not that much of a surprise that Vladoff was able to slaughter an entire continent of these guys.
