* BrokenAesop: While the episode's primary Aesop boils down to "don't be racist and [[InterchangeableAsianCultures treat all Asian cultures as the same]]", it falls flat when you realize the writers decided to make the akumatized form of the Chinese Wang Cheng a ShoutOut to ''Franchise/DragonBall'', an iconic ''Japanese'' piece of media[[note]]the series ''is'' loosely based on [[Literature/JourneyToTheWest an iconic Chinese story]], though it's unlikely a casual viewer will remember that[[/note]]. Additionally, two of the weapons he uses are a {{BFS}} resembling one that's wielded by yet ''another'' [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII iconic Japanese character]] and a pair of sushi-themed tonfas (while tonfas ''are'' used in Chinese martial arts, the fact that they're sushi-themed unintentionally harkens back to Chloé's remarks that he should just make sushi).

ROCEJ (per thread)

* ValuesDissonance: For most audiences, the fact that Chloé interchanged Wang Cheng's ethnicity would simply demonstrate that she isn't really familiar with the diversity of East Asian cultures, but nobody would interpret it as any sort of hostility towards them. In particular, most people wouldn't understand how there is any malice in her suggestion that he should make sushi rather than soup.[[note]]In Germany, for instance, the collective term "Asian restaurant" is commonly used for any restaurant serving East Asian food, and many of them in fact also designate themselves as such. And due to the high demand for sushi in Germany, most of these Asian restaurants ''do'' offer it on their menu, regardless of whether they are in fact Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, and so on. So perhaps the same is true for Asian restaurants in France, and Chloé just genuinely assumed that an Asian chef must have a recipe for sushi up his sleeve as well.[[/note]] All in all, the whole ethnic confusion would at most be seen as an indication of Chloé's cluelessness, but nothing more. In America, on the other hand, where society is known to be extraordinarily sensitive when it comes to the topic of race and culture, getting someone's ethnicity wrong will unfailingly earn you the reputation as a racist for the rest of your life, no matter whether it actually was intentional or not. (It will generally just be assumed that it was).[[note]]The tropes listed on the Recap of this episode are a very good indication of that. They mostly state outright that Chloé ''was being racist'', not that she ''was possibly being racist''.[[/note]]

* InformedWrongness: Chloé is treated as racist for suggesting Marinette's uncle should make sushi, implying she's [[InterchangeableAsianCultures conflating Chinese and Japanese cultures]]. However, because [[CompressedVice she never shows this kind of racism in any other episode]], it's equally if not more plausible she meant that he should make sushi because it's ''trendy'' -- the only reason this statement comes off as racist is because of her more blatant racism throughout the rest of the episode.

okay we should really rewatch the entire episode before revising these things instead of editing every other minute lol

* InformedWrongness: Chloe is treated as racist for suggesting Marinette's uncle for making sushi, implying she's conflating Chinese and Japanese cultures. Out of context, she could have just meant that he should make sushi because it's ''trendy.'' And it's actually insulting to suggest a Chinese person can't just learn to make foreign dishes.
