Added DiffLines:

* * UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The early years of the comic greatly reflect the early-2000s anime and video game fan community that it was created in. There are many references to works and genres that are no longer popular, and in particular, LeetSpeak - at the time, a genuinely common aspect of gamer culture - has long since become DeaderThanDisco.

* GrowingTheBeard: In direct contrast to the JumpingTheShark example below, some people believe that when the comic took a turn for the dramatic it got better.

* GrowingTheBeard: In direct contrast to the JumpingTheShark example below, some Some people believe that when the comic took a turn for the dramatic it got better.

* JumpingTheShark: Some argue that this happened after Rodney Caston quit and left the production of the comic entirely to Fred Gallagher.
** A lot of people actually enjoyed the shift to a more drama-based series but lost interest later when the updates became ridiculously infrequent and the story more difficult to follow strip-to-strip.

** Also Fred Gallagher, according to XKCD. Though the implication here is that they find him so pathetic that he likely couldn't stand the parodies and mockery they subjected some other webcomics to. ...Unless that's the mockery.
*** No, Fred is a woobie, but for different reasons. First Sarah had a complicated pregnancy that nearly killed her. Then she gave birth several weeks early, as a result of those preexisting issues. Then their son had some serious health issues (common for preemies). Then Sarah was diagnosed with lymphoma. THEN Fred started having heart problems. (And then their cat suddenly died.) Seriously, nothing good seems to happen to the guy. On top of all that, there are many people who hate him so much that his bad luck is cause for celebration.

* UnfortunateImplications: When the anti-cat weapon was first introduced it was termed the nipstick, since it was loaded with catnip. It was pointed out that this was unfortunate for a comic based in Japan and the name was removed.
** The 9/11 strip, released the very next day after the attack. While the author's rant makes it clear he is horrified about the situation, the looks on Piro's and Largo's face can be interpreted anywhere from slight disappointment to StunnedSilence to dull shock. The whole thing is easy to misinterpret if you read it hurriedly, so in the end, the reader is left to judge. Let nothing else be said.

Added DiffLines:

* ViewerGenderConfusion: Piro was originally drawn with a short, slender build, somewhat more feminine features, and a much more androgynous hairdo. This, combined with only going by a nickname, occasionally led to some viewers believing he was actually a she. Lampshaded in universe when he first meets Yuki and her classmates, who briefly mistake him for a girl.

* ComplainingAboutShowsYouDontWatch: There are several extremely negative reviews of MT that focus entirely on the plot and art around comic 300 (not long after Rodney left), and appear to be unaware that there's close to a thousand more story pages by now, with substantial changes in art and characterization.
** Back before updates became laughably infrequent, many negative reviews amounted to ItsPopularNowItSucks. Other negative reviews have come either from anime haters (who dislike Fred's art style) or purists (who are offended that Fred unashamedly uses a Japanese art style and that he managed to get his comic sold alongside actual manganever mind that no one complained when Dramacon and Bizenghast did the same thing).
*** There's still more negative reviews where the main complaint is that Rodney left (or "was kicked off", to quote said reviews), and nothing else.

** We don't know exactly what happened, and we never will because both of them signed NDA's. The few details we've gotten from both of them over the years suggest that Rodney got bored with writing the strip pretty early on, leaving more details to Fred, then disapproving of the direction Fred wanted to take things; the last strip Rodney wrote by himself (aside from a couple of one-offs several months later) was, ironically, a strip showing the different ways their characters viewed the world. It's not a coincidence that immediately after this strip ran, Megatokyo switched to its now-standard chapter format. Although Rodney wasn't contributing much of anything to the series, his name was still on the masthead and he still owned half of the copyright, something Fred came to resent. Eventually, Rodney agreed to let Fred buy out his half of the IP, and Rodney's name disappeared from the masthead at the end of April 2002, comic #253, a DPD sketch published 1 May 2002, is the first one to credit Fred alone, with earlier strips receiving an OrwellianRetcon to change the copyright info.

* CompleteMonster: Ed. He's a sadistic psychopath who enjoys killing people. Does he have any redeeming features whatsoever? No. He's not even funny.
** And then there's Dom, who wants Sega to own Erika and Kimiko too.
** Ed and Dom are pretty funny around each other, at least, in an EvilVersusEvil sortof way.
